The effects of shoot size and differences in budburst phenology ofQuercus serrata trees on the spatial patterns of galls were investigated for two cynipid species: the sexual generation ofAndricus moriokae and the agamic generation ofAphelonyx glanduliferae. There were marked differences in budburst phenology, but these did not affect the gall density on the tree. The galls of both cynipids showed a contagious distribution in their respective trees, but different abundance patterns under high gall density. The mean number of galls ofA. glanduliferae over a shoot size range was positively correlated with shoot size. More galls ofA. moriokae appeared on larger shoots on trees on which many buds had started growing before oviposition by the agamic adults. In the case of a tree on which a few buds had burst by the time of oviposition, the mean numbers ofA. moriokae galls on shoots of particular size ranges depended on the frequency of shoots in the size class. These results suggest that, although these cynipids prefer to attack larger shoots within a host tree, they may exhibit plasticity in their preference in response to changes in budburst phenology of the host plant relative to the time of oviposition.

Lawson cypress (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana), an important landscape tree, is widely planted in gardens and parks throughout Iran. Crown gall disease on Lawson cypress trees was observed in Sari and Juybar Counties, Mazandaran province, northern Iran, in 2017. Isolation from galls on potato dextrose agar (PDA) containing CaCO3 yielded bacterial colonies, the predominant types of which were purified and selected for characterization. The isolates were Gram‐negative, oxidase positive, able to grow in 2% NaCl and produced 3‐ketolactose. They hydrolysed esculin, casein and arbutin but not starch, gelatin or Tween 80. Two representative isolates were selected for PCR amplification and sequencing of DNA gyrase subunit B (gyrB) gene. In the phylogenetic tree based on the partial sequence of the gyrB gene, isolates KH1 and KH2 clustered with Agrobacterium pusense. The pathogenicity of all isolates was confirmed by inoculation on Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium) and carrot discs (Daucus carota). Confirmation of the presence of genes involved in pathogenicity was made by performing PCR with the virD2A/virD2C and VCF/VCR primer pairs which resulted in amplification of the expected 224 and 730 bp fragments in all studied isolates, respectively. A. pusense was therefore identified as the causal agent of crown and stem gall of Lawson cypress. This appears to be the first report on the natural occurrence of crown gall disease on Lawson cypress and the first record of a plant disease caused by A. pusense.

We describe the relationships among patterns of abundance of galls, survivorship, and mortality factors in the sexual generation of a cynipid wasp, Andricus moriokae, and detail the impacts of abundant parasitoid species on the survivorship of the cynipid in relation to the abundance patterns of galls. The mean number of galls per shoot, the frequency distribution of number of galls on a single shoot, and the mean number of galls per shoot in respective shoot size classes (the number of leaves per shoot) did not differ significantly between two sample trees. The relative impacts of the three mortality factors differed between trees, having different consequences for the survivorship of the cynipid. The rate of parasitoid attack, the main cause of mortality, was higher in the tree on which the cynipids survived better. On the other hand, the mortalities caused by gall predation and gall abortion were higher in the tree with the lower survival rate of the cynipid. Galls appeared more frequently on larger shoots on both trees. However, the survival rate and the mortality rates caused by three mortality factors did not differ among shoot size classes within each tree. The species composition of the parasitoid assemblage changed with shoot size, but the patterns of change differed between trees with similar abundance patterns of galls. Thus, the survivorship and mortality factors of the cynipid were probably not related to the abundance patterns of galls.

Patterns of host plant utilization of the pine resin gall moth Retinia resinella in a young Scots pine stand were studied along a belt transect in southeastern Finland. The gall distribution in 1984–1989 was retrospectively analysed. The moth preferred leaders to lateral shoots. In 1984, 60% of the galls occurred on the leaders, while the respective proportion was 40% in 1986 and 38% in 1988. The mean height of pines attacked by the moth changed from 74 to 127 cm. In 1984, moth galls on leaders occurred on higher and better‐growing trees than the average, while the opposite was true in 1988. There was an indication of clumping of R. resinella, with clumps spaced about 20 m apart which may be‐due to microhabitat distribution, the behaviour of ovipositing females or spatial dynamics of predators. The galls occurred more frequently on trees with a previous year's gall, but this tendency was not observed in the leader galls. The results support the view that the pattern of host plant utilization by a herbivore may profoundly depend on the successional stage of the habitat.

The aim was to determine the inoculation density above which Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is overcome by the blue‐stain fungus Ophiostoma ips that is associated with the bark beetle Ips sexdentatus. In north‐western Spain, stems of 16 Scots pines were inoculated at various densities (0, 400, 800 or 1600 inoculi/m2) along circumferential 100 or 150 cm wide inoculation belts. Each inoculum consisted of a 5 mm diameter cylinder of malt extract agar colonized by the fungus. Three months later, all trees were harvested and trunk resinosis and foliage colour were visually assessed. The percentage of healthy, desiccated, resin soaked, and blue‐stained sapwood, as well as growth productivity indices, were calculated from stem disks cut from within the inoculated zone of each tree. Sapwood‐specific hydraulic conductivity (Ks) of each tree was measured in the middle of the inoculated zone. All parameters of tree vigour changed dramatically to the worse when inoculation densities were above 400 inoculi/m2, and foliage changed from green to yellow‐green or yellow when an inoculation density of 800 instead of 400 was used. The percentage loss of sapwood‐specific conductivity (PLC) increased from 30 to 90% and the percentage of healthy, conductive sapwood dropped from 85 to 35% at 800 inoculi/m2. No effect of the width of the inoculation belt was observed, and there was no relationship between tree productivity indices and the level of resistance. A non‐linear negative relationship was found between PLC and the percentage of healthy sapwood. It is concluded that tree resistance was overcome and that trees were going to die when the inoculation density was ≥800 inoculi/m2.

Tree thinning reduces tree-to-tree competition and likely contributes to the improvement of tree water status and productivity in water-limited systems. In this study, we examined the importance of competition for water among Quercus ilex trees in open woodlands by comparing the water consumption and physiological status of trees located along stand density gradients which ranged from 10% (low density; LD) to 100% (high density; HD) of canopy cover. The study was carried out at two sites which differed in mean annual rainfall (506 and 816 L m−2; Dsite and Wsite, respectively). Predawn and midday leaf water potential (ψd and ψm, respectively) and CO2 assimilation rate (A) were measured every two weeks from mid May to mid September, in eight trees located along a stand density gradient at each site. Sap flow and soil moisture were measured only at Dsite. Sap flow was continuously recorded by sap flowmeters (constant heating method) installed in 12 trees along two stand density gradients. Soil moisture (?) was measured every 20 cm for the first meter and then every 50 cm up to 250 cm. Measurements were conducted in 18 soil profiles, 6 located in HD and 12 in LD (six beneath and six out the canopy). At Wsite, differences among stand densities for ψ and A were very small and emerged only at the end of the dry season. At Dsite, ψ (both predawn and midday), A, ?, and sap flow density were significantly higher in LD trees than in HD ones. At Dsite, some water remained unused in the soil at the end of the dry season beyond the canopy in the LD areas, and trees did not experienced such an acute water deficit (ψd > −1 MPa) as the HD trees did (ψd < −3 MPa). Summer tree transpiration at the stand level (Estand) tended to saturate with the increase of canopy cover. Estand increases by 32% when canopy cover goes from 50% to 100%. Results confirmed that the increase of tree-to-tree competition with stand density was much more significant at dry sites. In these sites, tree thinning is recommended as a way to maintain tree functioning.

Five cultivars and two populations of wild‐type seedlings of American elm (Ulmus americana), 3 and 4 years old, were examined for differences in their abilities to compartmentalize and resist infection by artificially inoculating with Ophiostoma novo‐ulmi. Morphological characteristics of tree defence, often referred to as the compartmentalization of decay in trees model, were used as a conceptual framework, with particular emphasis on the limiting of tangential spread of infection within the xylem and barriers that limit spread outwards to cells formed after infection. To investigate the change in functional xylem over time, 3‐year‐old trees were assessed at multiple time points following inoculation for hydraulic conductivity. Three and four‐year‐old cut trees were placed in 0.1% w/v safranin O for 18 to 24 hr to indicate functional xylem. Transverse sections of the stained stems were used to calculate per cent of sap‐conducting xylem area and the per cent of circumference conducting of first formed cells and later formed cells. At each collection time, trees were assessed for disease severity on a 1–12 scale, based on the percentage of permanent wilt in the crown. There was considerable variation between cultivars in disease severity and their capacity to localize and resist infection. “Prairie Expedition,” which had the lowest disease severity rating in 2015 and the second lowest in 2016, consistently limited the spread of infection into newly formed xylem and had functional xylem around the entire circumference of the stem at 90 days post‐inoculation. “Valley Forge” in 2016 had the lowest overall disease severity rating and was the only cultivar to consistently limit the tangential spread of infection within extant xylem. This research identifies key characteristics that some cultivars have to resist and limit infection and provides new information that can be used in disease screening programmes to evaluate other cultivars and older plant material.

The blue‐stain fungus Ceratocystis resinifera colonizes wounds on living Picea spp. and other conifers in Europe and North America. Little is known regarding the pathogenicity of this fungus and consequently, four Norwegian C. resinifera isolates were inoculated on to Norway spruce (Picea abies) using two different techniques. These included single‐point inoculations on young trees (two inoculations per tree on 14‐year‐old trees) and mass‐inoculations on older trees (~200 inoculations per tree on 34‐year‐old trees). In both experiments, C. resinifera induced minor symptoms that in most cases did not differ significantly from inoculation with sterile agar. The virulent blue‐stain fungus C. polonica, which was inoculated for comparative purposes, induced extensive symptoms, causing 83% dead cambium circumference and 82% blue‐stained sapwood, and long necrotic lesions in the phloem. The results suggest that C. resinifera is non‐pathogenic or only mildly pathogenic to Norway spruce and does not present a threat to these trees.

Mass mortality of oak trees has been occurring in Japan since the late 1980s. The fungus Raffaelea quercivora has been frequently isolated from discoloured sapwood in dead or wilting trees and inoculation experiments have shown it to be capable of causing wilting and xylem discoloration in several oak species, notably Quercus crispula and Q. serrata. In this study, we inoculated seedlings of six Fagaceae species with R. quercivora and, after 56 days, measured the vertical length of the discoloration and the areas of discoloured and non‐conducting sapwood on stem cross‐sections. The sapwood discoloration and the water non‐conduction areas were larger in Q. crispula and Q. serrata than in the other species.

The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in infections caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens in a conifer, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), and in a non-host deciduous species, silver birch (Betula pendula). All the Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains tested caused crown-gall formation in both tree species, but the infection rates varied remarkably. In Scots pine, the development of galls was rare, and slower than in silver birch. Inoculation into the base of the stem were the most successful in gall induction. Silver-birch galls were large, often surrounding the whole stem, in contrast to Scots pine galls, which were characterized by their small size and neck-like connection with the host plant. In silver birch, no other morphological changes could be seen. In Scots pine, abnormal phenotypes with proliferating short shoots above the galls were observed during the second and third growing season. The results indicate that, of the two non-host tree species, the deciduous one, silver birch, is more susceptible to an A. tumefaciens infection than the conifer, Scots pine. The matrix for A. tumefaciens infection in silver birch differs from that in Scots pine, since the terpene compounds of Scots pine seem either to kill the agrobacteria or to suppress their growth. The differences between the species could be partly caused by their difference in sensitivity to phytohormones. These features reflect evolutionary incompatibility between A. tumefaciens and a gymnosperm.

The blue‐stain fungus Ceratocystis polonica is pathogenic to Norway spruce (Picea abies) in Europe, as well as to Yezo spruce (Picea jezoensis) and Sachalin spruce (Picea glehnii) in Japan. The wilting mechanism in P. jezoensis saplings after inoculation with C. polonica was examined based on anatomical studies of the phloem and xylem of periodically harvested trees. In addition, the course of sap ascent in the trunks was traced by injection of acid fuchsin solution at harvest. As an initial external symptom, needle discolouration was observed. In dye conduction tests, xylem dysfunction in the xylem of inoculated trees became obvious. The dehydrated xylem area (dry zone) had extended more than 20 cm above the inoculation wounds, within 1 month after inoculation. When the sap flow to the branches had nearly stopped, the leaves began to discolour. Hyphae of C. polonica colonized the ray tissue around the inoculation wounds, but were absent at the front of the dry zones. Defence reactions occurred in ray parenchyma cells adjacent to the penetrating hyphae. It is suggested that secondary metabolites, which are formed by the ray cells and epithelial cells of resin canals, are involved in the obstruction of sap flow. Limited necrotic lesions of the phloem and cambium were not associated with foliar symptoms. It is proposed that the dry zone formation caused by C. polonica is the main mechanism leading to tree death.

The relationships between plant organs and root hydrological traits are not well known and the question arises whether elevated CO2 changes these relationships. This study attempted to answer this question. A pseudo-replicated experiment was conducted with two times 24 American elm (Ulmus americana L.) and 23 and 24 red oak (Quercus rubra L.) seedlings growing in ambient CO2 (around 360 μmol·L–1) and 540 ± 7.95 μmol·L–1 CO2 in a greenhouse. After 71 days of treatment for American elm and 77 days for red oak, 14 American elm and 12 red oak seedlings from each of the two CO2 levels were randomly selected in order to examine the flow rate of root xylem sap, root hydraulic conductance, total root hydraulic conductivity, fine root and coarse root hydraulic conductivity. All seedlings were harvested to investigate total plant biomass, stem biomass and leaf biomass, leaf area, height, basal diameter, total root biomass, coarse root biomass and fine root biomass. The following conclusions are reached: 1) plant organs respond to the elevated CO2 level earlier than hydraulic traits of roots and may gradually lead to changes in hydraulic traits; 2) plant organs have different relationships with hydraulic traits of roots and elevated CO2 changes these relationships; the changes may be of importance for plants as means to acclimatize to changing environments; 3) biomass of coarse roots increased rather more than that of fine roots; 4) Lorentzian and Caussian models are better in estimating the biomass of seedlings than single-variable models.

It is well known that species of Ceratocystis, which cause canker and wilt diseases on trees, require wounds for infection. In this regard, a number of physical and environmental factors influence the success of wound colonization by these fungi. The aim of this study was to consider the influence of wound age, stem diameter and colonization of wounds by Ophiostoma quercus on the success of infection by Ceratocystis albifundus, an important wilt pathogen of Acacia mearnsii in southern and eastern Africa, under field conditions. This was performed by doing controlled inoculations on Acacia mearnsii trees, of different diameters, with C. albifundus at different time intervals after wounding and after pre‐inoculation of wounds with O. quercus at the time of wounding. The success of infection by C. albifundus decreased significantly from 8 h after wounding and was higher on stems of greater diameter. Pre‐infection of wounds by O. quercus reduced the infection success of C. albifundus. The overall results showed that managing wounds created during forestry operations by treating wounds with naturally occurring, non‐virulent fungi, such as O. quercus, could reduce the prevalence of infections by C. albifundus.

Bacteria inhabiting the xylem of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karsten) were investigated. The trees had been wounded and artificially inoculated with fungi and bacteria obtained from wounds of naturally infected spruce. One and five growing seasons after inoculation the Gram‐negative bacterial population present in the stem of inoculated trees were analysed.

The Gram‐negative bacteria isolated from the trees were identified on the basis of morphological, biochemical and physiological tests and whole‐cell fatty acid composition. The predominant strains were Enterobacteriaceae fermenter strains (E. agglomerans or E. sakazakii), fluorescent and yellow pigmented Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter and Moraxella spp. All Gram‐positive bacteria were Bacillus species.

The Gram‐negative bacteria of Norway spruce differed from the Gram‐positive species in possessing stronger lipolytic activity and in their ability to utilize pine resins for growth. Gram‐positive bacteria were generally able to utilise cellulose and hemicellulose, whereas among the Gram‐negative bacteria only one xylanolytic (yellow Pseudomonas) strain was found.

Due to the labour challenges in South Africa, mechanised forestry equipment has increasingly been required to operate in complex forest conditions – such as coppiced Eucalyptus compartments – where they have not operated before. For this reason, harvesters are either used in certain coppiced compartments with uncertain productivity expectations, or harvesters are not used in these compartments due to a lack of productivity knowledge. This research aimed to determine the influence of tree volume and tree form on the productivity of an excavator-based harvester in coppiced regrowth – with either double or single stems, or planted single stems – in Eucalyptus grandis pulpwood compartments. In addition, the stem felled first and the distance between stems were investigated for coppiced double stems. The stem felled first is whichever stem between the two coppiced double stems the harvester grabbed, felled and processed first. The tree volume was determined; thereafter the trees were classified into different form classes. The tree volume and the cycle time were used to determine productivity. The research results showed that planted trees had the highest productivity across all tree sizes, followed by coppiced single stems and then coppiced double stems. When harvesting a 0.2 m3 tree, the mean harvester productivity was 8.7 m3 per productive machine hour (PMH0) in coppiced double stems, 13.8 m3 per PMH0 in coppiced single stems and 16.1 m3 per PMH0 in planted trees. In coppiced double stems the productivity was significantly influenced by the size of the stem felled first. In coppiced double stems the productivity was not significantly influenced by the distance between stems. The productivity for both coppiced single stems and coppiced double stems was significantly influenced by stem form. The poorly formed trees had lower productivity compared to the trees with good form.

Seasonal development of resinous stem canker was determined in Chamaecyparis obtusa trees wound‐inoculated with Cistella japonica in January 1996. Samples for anatomical analysis were harvested on 20 May, 9 July and 6 August in the second year of inoculation, and the sections were observed under light microscope. Resin exudation was most abundant in the second year, decreasing in the third. All new resin exudation in the second year was recognized at the May observation. New traumatic resin canal formation was observed in the August samples, and an expansion of necrotic lesions was observed mainly in summer samples in the inoculated trees and in naturally affected trees. Cistella japonica was re‐isolated from all bark lesions or inoculated wounds examined. These results suggest that the activity of Ci. japonica in the tree affects the seasonal development of resinous stem canker during the growing season of the trees.

A field-based study was carried out to broaden our knowledge of fully mechanized cut-to-length harvesting productivity in naturally grown forests in the northern European part of Russia (NEPR). The recorded data comprised 38 midsized single-grip harvesters (JD 1270D) in clear-cutting operations in the Karelia, Komi, Vologda, Leningrad, Tver, and Kirov regions in NEPR, 4.3 million felled trees, and 1.4 million m3 u.b. (under bark) of processed timber. Harvesting operations were conducted in forest stands composed of spruce (48% on average), pine (19%), birch (22%), and aspen (11%), with an average stem volume 0.31 m3 u.b. The cut-to-length harvesters produced from 4.3 to 14.9 m3 u.b./productive machine hour (PMH) and 16.0–49.5 m3 u.b./stem processing machine hour (S proc MH). A machine evaluation analysis and a regression analysis were used to formulate models for predicting cutting productivity of modern single-grip harvester. The regression models were developed to estimate the productivity of the harvesters in the regions taking into account two significant factors influencing the productivity: the stem volume and tree species of the felled trees. Productivity/cubic meter u.b. of processed timber/PMH was calculated according to stem volume and tree species distributions in most forest-covered NEPR regions. Further research is suggested to improve the developed productivity models and to allow prediction of system performance over a broad range of stand and site conditions.
