Summary Pedigree selection for seed yield, using early generation yield tests, was practiced from the F2 to F7 in two populations of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in three plant densities: 66, 133, and 266 thousand plants ha-1 at CIAT-Palmira, Colombia. The six highest yielding lines selected from each plant-density, along with 13 parents, were evaluated in a 7×7 lattice design with three replications at the three densities utilized for selection, and at 399,000 plants ha-1 in 1988 and 1989.Based on the mean performance of selected lines and the mean of the parents, selection for seed yield was effective in all densities in both populations. However, none of the lines selected from the population within the race Mesoamerica (TC 4673) significantly outyielded their best parent under any plant density. The highest yielding lines selected from the interracial population (TR 4635) outyielded their best parent irrespective of the plant-density used for selection. The highest yielding line originated from the highest density used for selection. Low density was neither good for selection nor for evaluation and identification of high-yielding cultivars of common bean. There was no significant difference between the mean yield of lines selected at the intermediate and high population densities. The effects of plant density, year, and their interactions were significant for seed yield.  相似文献

Approaches are needed to broaden the genetic base and improve earliness and yield potential of large-seeded beans under sustainable cropping systems. The objective of this research was to develop adapted dwarf bean populations having a commercial seed quality and yield suitable for the production in the South of Europe. The original base populations were produced from crosses between genotypes within each Mesoamerica, Nueva Granada and Peru races, and between Peru and Nueva Granada, and Mesoamerica and Nueva Granada races. Visual mass selection for plant performance was practised in the F2 and F3 generations. In the F4 and F5, single plants were harvested under two cropping systems (sole cropping and intercropping with maize). From F4, selection was based on precocity, combined with seed yield and seed commercial type. The F4:7 selected lines from each original population were compared with their parents and five checks at four environments and two cropping systems. Differences among environments, populations, parents and checks were observed for all traits. Under intercropping with maize, there was a 50% reduction in seed yield. Yield of parents and checks belonging to Andean South American races, intraracial (Nueva Granada × Nueva Granada) and interracial (Nueva Granada × Peru) populations, was higher than that of those of Middle American origin. Intraracial crosses within large-seeded Andean South American (Peru race) and Middle American gene pools (Mesoamerica race) did not produce lines yielding more than the highest yielding parent. Only two large-seeded lines selected from crosses between small- and large-seeded gene pools out-yielded the best parent and check cultivar.  相似文献

Summary Progress was evaluated after four cycles of recurrent selection among S0 plants of Glycine max (L.) Merr. in which selection was either for maturity (MAT) or seed protein (PRO). The two populations, MAT and PRO, were developed from an initial population that was a combination of a line with 48.4% seed protein and two F2 populations segregating for male sterility. Intermating was facilitated by genetic male-sterility and the selection intensity was 20% in each cycle of the two populations. Selection for early maturity advanced the average maturity a significant 2.7±0.34 days cycle–1 and reduced seed yield a non-significant 9.1±2.95 g plant–1 cycle–1. Selection increased mean seed protein a significant 0.8±0.15 percentage points cycle–1 and decreased percent seed oil a non-significant 0.5±0.17 percentage points cycle–1. Correlation coefficients between seed protein and seed yield varied from 0.18 to –0.21 in the four cycles indicating plants with favorable combinations of seed yield and seed protein could be identified. Selection in these two populations would be effective for early maturity and for increased seed protein.  相似文献

Summary The efficiency of indirect selection for seed yield was compared with direct selection for yield per se in chickpea. A total of 2500 single F2 plants, derived from 50 crosses with 50 plants from each cross, were divided into five sub-populations (SP1 to SP5) of 500 plants each by including 10 plants from each of the 50 crosses. The five sub-populations were advanced upto F6 by exercising 10% selection intensity for four successive generations for number of pods per plant in SP1, number of seeds per pod in SP2, seed weight in SP3, seed yield in SP4 and random selection in SP5. The efficiency of direct and indirect selection for yield was evaluated by comparing groups of 50 F6 lines from each sub-population. SP1 and SP3 F6 lines showed higher mean grain yield than the other three methods. SP1 and SP3 were found to be almost equally efficient in developing F6 lines which were significantly superior to the check. This suggests that indirect selection for yield via pod number and seed weight is more efficient than direct selection for yield.  相似文献

Summary Polymorphism at isozyme loci was used to locate factors responsible for variation in quantitative traits of lentil. Eight sets of random single seed descent (RSSD) derived lines were developed by advancing individual F3 plants of interspecific (L. culinaris Medik. × L. orientalis Boiss.) hybrids to the F6. The RSSD lines in each of the eight sets differed for alleles at 2–8 isozyme loci. In each set, association of isozyme loci with variation in seven quantitative traits (days to flower, days to mature, plant height, biomass, seed yield, harvest index, seed weight) was determined for each pairwise combination of a quantitative trait with a marker locus. Loci affecting variation in all seven quantitative traits were detected by their association with 14 isozyme markers (Aat-c, Aat-m, Aat-p, Adh-1, Fk, Gal-1, Gal-2, Lap-1, Lap-2, Pgd-p, Pgi, Pgm-c, Pgm-p, Skdh). The known position of 10 the 14 isozyme loci on the lentil genetic map was used to mark the genomic regions for possible location of associated quantitative trait loci (QTL). Detected QTL were found to be located in six of the seven linkage groups on lentil genetic map. Regions of the genome represented by linkage groups, 1, 5 and 7 appeared to affect a greater number of traits than other genomic regions represented by linkage groups 2, 3 and 4. Results indicated that the mean expression of quantitative traits at segregating marker locus classes can be used to locate the genetic factors in lentil which influence the behavior of economically important traits.  相似文献

Summary The reliability of a selection among crosses based on a cross prediction in early generations was investigated in spring rapeseed. The performance of the parents, the F2 generation, and random F3 lines from four crosses were used to predict the probability of finding superior recombinant lines. These predictions were made for two years and compared with the observed performance of F6 lines in the second of these two years and in an additional year. Predicted and observed performances coincided reasonably for the characters plant height, standability, maturity and an index calculated from seed yield, oil content and protein content. For seed yield and flowering time, the predictions were very unreliable. In conclusion, prediction methods may be useful in rapeseed breeding, if quality traits are of major commercial interest.  相似文献

In a self-fertilised crop like lentil, the identification of transgressive segregants for economically important trait such as seed yield is an important aspect of any practical breeding programme. The prediction of expected transgressive segregants in F1 generation obtained as a ratio of additive genic effect [d] and additive variance (D) i.e. [d]/√D was studied in 28 crosses of lentil generated in a diallel fashion involving four parents each of macrosperma (exotic) and microsperma (Indian) types, respectively, resulting in three hybridization groups. The seed material advanced to F2, F3 and F4 generations through single seed descent method was evaluated to determine the observed transgressive segregants for seed yield/plant. The observed frequency of crosses showing more than 20% transgressive segregants in F2 to F4 generations were exhibited in 9(32%) crosses, of which 7(77%) crosses were of macrosperma × microsperma type. Genotypes Precoz and HPL-5 of the exotic group (macrosperma) produced maximum number of transgressive segregants with the genotypes L-259, L-4145 and PL-406 of the Indian origin (microsperma). Goodness of fit (non-significant χ2 value) in F2 generation was observed for 19(68%) crosses of the total genepool, out of which 9(56%) crosses each in F3 and F4 generation belonged to the macrosperma × microsperma group, depicting it as the gene pool of paramount importance to obtain maximum transgressive segregants, therefore establishing the efficacy of the method used.  相似文献

With the objective of selecting superior recombinant lines of snap bean, four segregating F2 populations were selected by early generation testing and advanced by single seed descent. In a randomized complete block design with two replications within sets 120 F6:7 lines were obtained and evaluated for seven traits of agronomic interest. The mean pod yield of the F6:7 generation was 72% higher than in generation F2, confirming the efficiency of early selection. There was genetic variability in the F6:7 lines within the sets. The selection of superior genotypes was possible by the high estimates of narrow-sense heritability. Highest gains in simultaneous selection of traits were expressed by the indices proposed by Mulamba & Mock for the genetic standard deviation and by Williams, based on tentatively attributed arbitrary weights. Line 3 of the F6:7 generation, with a yield of 8,050.0000 kg ha−1 and pod fiber content of 0.3650% is highly promising to be release as new cultivar.  相似文献

Heterogeneous and segregating oat populations subjected to no selection and to mass selection for seed width for five consecutive generations were evaluated for 100-seed weight, heading date and plant height. The mass-selection technique, which consisted of passing the seeds over a screen with 12.7×2.4 mm slots and propagating the seeds too wide to go through the slots, was repeated for five consecutive generations (F3 through F7). Comparable unselected populations were grown each year. Remnant seeds from each check and mass-selected population were stored for future studies. In 1963, 500 random seeds from each of the six unselected populations (F2 through F7), from each of the five mass-selected populations (F3 through F7) and from a pure line were space-planted in the field. In 1964, the progenies from 75 random strains (a strain was the progeny of one spaced plant) from each of the 12 populations were sown in a randomized-block experiment with three replicates. In 1966, the strains from the last (F7) generation of the unselected and mass-selected lines of descent (75 strains from each) were tested for yield in a 7-replicate randomized block experiment. The mass-selection technique increased the mean 100-seed weight, whereas in the unselected line of descent, the mean 100-seed weight did not change. The mean heading dates became later and the mean plant heights taller with the mass-selection procedure. The mean yield of the final mass-selection population was nine percent higher than that of the comparable unselected population. In spite of the associated changes between 100-seed weight and plant height and heading date in successive generations; the genotypic correlations among strains within populations indicated that these three traits were inherited independently. In advanced generations (F6 and F7), the genotypic variances for heading date and 100-seed weight were reduced in both the unselected and mass-selected lines of descent, whereas, for plant height no significant change occurred in either.Journal No. J-5586 of the Iowa Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa, Project 1176. Summary Four populations of linseed derived from five parents were advanced from the F2 to the F6 generation by SSD and to the F5 by pedigree selection. These populations were used to compare the efficiency of the two methods in order to provide superior genotypes with respect to grain yield and oil content, i.e. oil yield. The results showed minimum differences between pedigree and SSD lines for grain yield, where in only one cross the SSD lines were significantly superior to the pedigree lines. Since pedigree selection was carried out for both, seed yield and oil content, a positive response to selection was expected. However, early selection for yield, a character with low heritability, was not successful. On the contrary, significant differences for oil content were detected between the two groups of lines in three of the four crosses studied. In these cases the pedigree lines were superior to the SSD lines. These results demonstrate that strict selection in early generations for oil content, a character with comparatively high heritability, is feasible and successful in linseed. However, selection for seed yield should be postponed to later inbred generations. Consequently, in breeding for maximum oil yield of linseed a two-step selection procedure is recommended.Abbreviations PS pedigree selection - SSD single seed descent - TGW thousand grain weight  相似文献

Yields of large-seeded Andean (A) common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars of Chile and Nueva Granada races are 40 to 60% lower compared to their Middle American (M) counterparts of small-seeded Mesoamerica and medium-seeded Durango races. Our objective was to use the concept of congruity backcrossing between Andean x Middle American inter-gene pool [AM 11833 = A 483 (A)///// A 686 (M) //// PVA 800A(A)/// ‘Carioca’ (M)// Carioca (M)/ G 19833 (A)] and between races within Andean gene pool [i.e., intra-gene pool Andean, AA 11834 = A483 (A)//// ‘Cardinal’(A) /// ‘Blanco Español’(A) // BlancoEspañol (A) / ‘Taylor’ (A)] to compare selection for seed yield improvement of large-seeded Andean beans. Seven hundred sixty seven F2-derived F3 (F2:3) families were produced for each population. Visual appraisal for total plant performance, combined with seed yield from non-replicated plots was used for selection of 551 families in F2:3, 182 families in F2:4, and 91 families in F2:5 in each population. Eight hundred twenty three F5:6 lines were developed from the 91 F2:5 families in each population. Visual selection, combined with seed yield in non-replicated plots was again used to select 294 lines in F5:6 in each population. Similarly, 44 highest yielding F5:7 lines were selected in AM 11833 and 39 F5:7 lines in AA 11834. Thus, single plant selections were made in the F2 and F5, and plants within each plot were harvested in bulk in F3, F4, F6, and F7. Thirty nine F5:8 lines from AA 11834 and 44 lines from AM 11833, parents, and checks were evaluated at Popayán and Quilichao, Colombia in 1998 and 1999. Selected lines in both populations, on average, out-yielded the mean of their large-seeded Andean parents. Mean yield of the lines selected from AM 11833 was 50% higher than AA 11834 lines. Twelve F5:8 lines out-yielded the highest yielding Andean parents G 19833 and A 483 in AM 11833, whereas only one line yielded significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the highest yielding parent A 483 in AA 11834. However, none of selected lines out-yielded small-seeded Middle American parents used in AM 11833 (A 686 and ‘Carioca’). The mean 100 seed-weight of AA 11834 was 36 g compared to 28 G for AM 11833 F5:8 lines. Selected lines had similar days to maturity as parents in AM 11833, and matured 3 d later in AA11834. Correlation coefficients between yield and 100 seed-weight were negative in both populations. Yield and days to maturity were positively correlated in AA 11834.  相似文献

Summary Three lentil (Lens culinaris Medic.) populations were advanced from the F2 to the F4 generation by singleseed-descent (SSD) and bulk-population (BP) breeding methods and used to compare the relative efficiency of the methods for maintaining genetic variation and selection opportunities.SSD maintained more genetic variation (% MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGak0dh9WrFfpC0xh9vqqj-hEeeu0xXdbba9frFj0-OqFf% ea0dXdd9vqaq-JfrVkFHe9pgea0dXdar-Jb9hs0dXdbPYxe9vr0-vr% 0-vqpWqaaeaabaGaaiaacaqabeaadaqaaqaaaOqaaiqbeo8aZzaaja% Waa0baaSqaaiaadEgaaeaacaaIYaaaaaaa!3B04!\[\hat \sigma _g^2 \]) in 15 of 21 comparisons of characters that were made. Genetic variances were significantly higher with SSD for plant height, days to maturity and yield in population 1; height of lowest pod in population 2; and days to blooming, height of lowest pod, plant type, and yield in population 3. SSD-derived populations had 10, 9, and 13% more erect lines in the three populations, respectively, when compared to the same populations advanced by BP. The BP method maintained 14, 2, and 4% more taller types in the three populations, respectively, and 16 and 33% more segregants that carried their pods higher from the ground. This indicated a reduced frequency of short plants with low flowers as a result of natural selection operating within BP against less competitive short types. The SSD method is an efficient cost-saving method of advancing lentil populations and is recommended for lentil breeding.Scientific Paper No. 5478.  相似文献

Inheritance of yield and yield contributing characters were investigated using generation mean analysis, utilising the means of six basic populations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1P1 and BC1P2 in four crosses of Vigna sesquipedalis. The analysis reiterated that the importance of dominance (h) gene effects for pod yield/plant and pods/plant as compared to additive (d) gene effects. However, significant and positive additive effects were noticed for pod yield/plant, pods/plant, pod weight and seed weight in different crosses. The three types of gene interactions (additive, dominance and epistasis) were significantly involved for pods/plant in cross KU 7 ×KU 8. Among the digenic epistatic interactions, both additive ×additive (i) and dominance × dominance (l) contributed more for pod yield/plant and pods/plant, however, it varied among the crosses. Populations having earliness can be developed as indicated by reducing dominance effects. Pedigree selection and heterosis breeding is suggested to exploit the fixable and non fixable components of variation respectively in Vigna sesquipedalis. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary Microspore embryogenesis technology allows plant breeders to efficiently generate homozygous micros-pore-derived breeding populations of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) without traditional generations of inbreeding. This study was conducted to compare the frequency distribution of microspore-derived population and single seed descent populations with respect to fatty acids of seed oil. Both microspore-derived populations and single seed descent populations were produced from each of three crosses made between selected parents containing contrasting amount of erucic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids. The fatty acid content of F3 plants derived lines (F5 seed) developed by single seed descent was compared to that of microspore-derived populations. The means, ranges and distribution pattern of seed fatty acid contents were similar in both populations for each fatty acid studied, although a few heterozygous lines were observed in the single seed descent populations. The results indicated that microspore-derived population form random, homozygous F1 plant derived gametic arrays for all fatty acids evaluated. Selection for altered fatty acid composition in microspore-derived and single seed descent homozygous populations should be equally efficient, in the absence of linkage of traits investigated.  相似文献

Experiments were undertaken to determine the inheritance of pod length in a cross with spring rapesecd, Brassica napus, and to assess the value of pod length as a criterion of selection for high seed yield. Analyses of patterns of variation in F2; and backcross populations derived from a cross between a short-pod line TB42 and long-pod line CA553 indicated that much of the variation in pod length could be attributed to two major genes interacting in a complementary manner. Short-pods were produced when cither one or both genes were homozygous for the recessive allele. Analyses of F3 progenies of selected F2 and inbred-backcross lines derived from the same cross supported the two-gene hypothesis but also indicated that the effects of the major genes on pod length were possibly modified by genes of minor effect. Field testing of families derived from random intermating between F2, plants of the TB42 × CA553 cross showed that number of pods per plant varied independently of pod length, but seed weight per pod tended to increase with increasing pod length. As a result, families with the longest pods generally had significantly higher yields than those with short pods. It was concluded that yield improvement in B. napus could be achieved through introgression of long-pod genes into cultivars with an appropriate genetic background to ensure that selection for the long-pod character would be accompanied by an increase in seed weight per pod with little or no reduction in number of pods per plant.  相似文献

Summary Saccharum spontaneum is being used in sugarcane breeding programs in attempt to improve characteristics such as ratooning ability and stress tolerance. A population of F1 (Saccharum officinarum or commercial variety x S. spontaneum) and F1 x F1 sugarcane clones was evaluated for sugar yield and a range of yield components in a plant and two ratoon crops. The aim was to determine genetic correlations between attributes in clones with a large component of S. spontaneum, that could be used to help derive appropriate selection indices in such populations. There were close associations between the same attributes measured in different crop-years and the associations between different attributes were generally similar across crop-years. Stalk number and fibre content were positively correlated, as were stalk weight and CCS. The latter two attributes (which are low in S. spontaneum but high in S. officinarum) were negatively correlated with the former two (high in S. spontaneum, low in S. officinarum). Sugar yield was more closely associated with stalk weight and CCS than with stalk number but became more closely associated with stalk number with successive ratoon crops.CCS was positively correlated (rg=0.55) with cane yield in the plant crop but showed a small negative correlation with cane yield (rg=–0.20) in the second ratoon crop. CCS (measured in any crop) also had a negative correlation with cane yield in the ratoon crops expressed as a percentage of plant cane yield. This suggests that CCS is negatively correlated with levels of traits contributing to ratooning ability. Intensive selection among such populations for CCS without consideration of ratooning performance may reduce the frequency of favourable specific ratooning characteristics.Abbreviations CCS commercial cane sugar  相似文献

Summary Four hundred sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) lines selected by five methods from five crosses were tested for yield and other agronomic characters in F6 and F7. More high yielding lines were isolated by the bulk method and in the cross involving two local cultivars when two seasons means and performance in each individual season were considered. The cross involving two exotic cultivars did not produce a single line superior to local recommended variety. The 80 highest yielding lines recorded a 10.8% increase in yield compared to the mean of 400 lines. Thirty five lines were among the top 20% both seasons with a 13.2% increase in yield. Highly significant seasonal and population effects were recorded. There were no significant differences among the methods of selection although the yield differences among lines were highly significant. Interactions of seasons × populations, seasons × methods, populations × methods and seasons × populations × methods were highly significant. The results indicate that simple and less expensive bulk method may be used with equal success as the pedigree, single seed descent or early generation testing methods when selecting for yield in segregating sesame populations. The importance of inclusion of a high yielding, locally adapted cultivar in the crossing programmes for yield breeding of sesame has also been revealed.Abbreviations BM Bulk method - EGT Early generation testing - G × E Genotype × environment - MSS Modified single seed descent - PM Pedigree method - SSD Single seed descent  相似文献

The availability of a reliable selection criterion for the identification of the most productive genotypes in early generations represents a crucial point in many breeding programs. The findings reported in the literature concerning the effectiveness of early generation testing for grain yield (GY) or harvest index (HI) are contradictory. In this work, we measured the response to selection for GY and HI applied in different generations, from F2 to F6 in nine segregating populations previously screened in F2 by means of visual selection. Genetic variability for HI and GY was found in most of the segregating populations. However, GY of spaced plants in F6 and F3 generations was weakly correlated with yield of F4 and successive generations grown at normal seed density. HI was of limited value as an indicator of yield potential.  相似文献

Summary Two breeding procedures were compared in two cowpea crosses. Both procedures were started from the same selected F2 plants in each cross. For the early generation yield testing, the F3 lines were yield tested and a pedigree and bulk methods followed in F4 and F5. Each F5 line was bulked to provide seed for a yield test in F6. In the Single Seed Descent (SSD) procedure, a single seed was taken from each F2 plant to produce the F3 generation. The procedure was repeated for the F4 and F5. The F6 SSD lines and the F6 yield testing lines were compared in yield tests. The results showed that differences in yielding ability of F3 lines persisted over generations indicating that selection was effective. This was confirmed by the high significant correlations between F3 yields and those of later generations which ranged from r=0.51* to 0.85**.The grain yields of lines derived by the single seed descent procedure were as good as those derived from early generation yield testing.Significant linear correlation between visual rating of F3 and F6 yields with actual yields revealed that it is possible to identify promising lines of cowpea visually.  相似文献

Summary Recurrent selection, using genetic male sterility to facilitate intermating in Glycine max, was evaluated when selecting among individual space-planted S0 soybean plants for three yield-related traits: 1) seed yield per se (YLD), 2) apparent harvest index (AHI), and 3) a selection index in which seed yield was regressed on maturity (REG). The original intermating population was a combination of the cultivar Century and two F2 populations segregating for male sterility. The selection intensity through three cycles of selection was 20%. The YLD population increased in mean yield by 2.8±2.2 g plant-1 cycle-1 buf shifted significantly toward late maturity by 3.9±0.6 days cycle-1. The AHI population decreased in yield by 4.4±2.6 g cycle-1 while maturity shifted slightly earlier; there was very little change in AHI. The REG population increased in yield by 5.7±2.4 g plant-1 cycle-1 while shifting toward later maturity by only 0.8±0.5 day cycle-1. We concluded that selection among S0 plants in these populations, using the selection index of yield regressed on maturity, was affective in increasing single plant yields without causing a significant shift in maturity. Selecting for yield per se caused an unacceptable shift toward late maturity and selection for AHI was ineffective for increasing yield or AHI.  相似文献
