Heterogeneous and segregating oat populations subjected to no selection and to mass selection for seed width for five consecutive generations were evaluated for 100-seed weight, heading date and plant height. The mass-selection technique, which consisted of passing the seeds over a screen with 12.7×2.4 mm slots and propagating the seeds too wide to go through the slots, was repeated for five consecutive generations (F3 through F7). Comparable unselected populations were grown each year. Remnant seeds from each check and mass-selected population were stored for future studies. In 1963, 500 random seeds from each of the six unselected populations (F2 through F7), from each of the five mass-selected populations (F3 through F7) and from a pure line were space-planted in the field. In 1964, the progenies from 75 random strains (a strain was the progeny of one spaced plant) from each of the 12 populations were sown in a randomized-block experiment with three replicates. In 1966, the strains from the last (F7) generation of the unselected and mass-selected lines of descent (75 strains from each) were tested for yield in a 7-replicate randomized block experiment. The mass-selection technique increased the mean 100-seed weight, whereas in the unselected line of descent, the mean 100-seed weight did not change. The mean heading dates became later and the mean plant heights taller with the mass-selection procedure. The mean yield of the final mass-selection population was nine percent higher than that of the comparable unselected population. In spite of the associated changes between 100-seed weight and plant height and heading date in successive generations; the genotypic correlations among strains within populations indicated that these three traits were inherited independently. In advanced generations (F6 and F7), the genotypic variances for heading date and 100-seed weight were reduced in both the unselected and mass-selected lines of descent, whereas, for plant height no significant change occurred in either.Journal No. J-5586 of the Iowa Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa, Project 1176. Summary Molecular mapping is a promising strategy for studying and understanding traits with complex genetic control, such as partial resistance to oat crown rust. The objectives of this research were to develop molecular maps from the progenies of the cross UFRGS7 (susceptible) × UFRGS910906 (partially resistant) and to identify QTLs (quantitative trait loci) associated to partial resistance to oat crown rust in two generations of that population.DNA of 86 genotypes of the F2 and 90 genotypes of the F6 UFRGS7 × UFRGS910906 population were used to generate AFLP markers. Molecular maps were constructed using Mapmaker Exp. 3.0 and QTLs for partial resistance to oat crown rust were identified with Mapmaker/QTL software. Five hundred and fifty seven markers in the F2 and 243 markers in the F6 generations were identified. The F2 map integrated 250 markers in 37 linkage groups. The F6 map integrated 86 markers in 17 linkage groups.Five QTLs were identified for partial resistance to oat crown rust in the F2 generation and three QTLs in the F6. The QTL identified on F6 through the PaaaMctt340 AFLP marker showed consistency across two environments and two generations (F4 and F6), and appear to have potential for marker-assisted selection in oat.  相似文献

Summary We tested three sets of oat varieties for grain yield in a series of environments and observed that generally more than 80% of the yield variation for individual varieties was due to linear regression response. Mean yields for varieties were significantly variable in all three sets, and regression response indexes were significantly variable in two of them.Mean yields over the three sets were correlated with regression response indexes with r=0.61. Associations of mean yield with the three stability parameters (i.e., coefficient of determination, mean square for deviations from regression, and ecovalence) were low and usually not significant. The correlation of regression response indexes with coefficients of determination was 0.42, but neither of the other stability parameters was associated with the response indexes. The three stability parameters were closely correlated with one another. Our materials were selected varieties, so evidently our results suggest what can be accomplished in breeding for combinations of mean production, production response, and productiom stability.Journal Paper No.J-9092 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa, USA 50011. Summary Fifty lines of oats (Avena Sativa L.) with a broad range of nitrogen harvest indexes (NHI) and nine check lines were evaluated in 15 environments to study the association between NHI and adaptability of oat lines to soils with different productivity levels due primarily to different amounts of N. Three yield characteristics (i.e., mean across environments, regression response to improving environments, and stability of response) were used to measure adaptability. The lines were significantly variable for means of grain and straw yield, for responsiveness to improving environments, and for stability of yield. Among the yield characteristics, only the mean of grain yield was significantly correlated with NHI.Journal Paper No. J-13336 of the Iowa Agric. and Home Econ. Exp. Stn., Ames, Iowa, 50011. Summary Mixtures of genotypes are frequently unstable in composition when propagated over succesive generations. This study was designed to test whether a multiline cultivar of oats (Avena sativa L.) created to control crown rust disease (caused by Puccinia coronata Cda.) would reflect differential near-isogenic line survivals when propagated under conditions of either presence or absence of rust. An oat multiline cultivar synthesized from near-isogenic lines that had different genes for resistance to crown rust was propagated under rust-free and rust epiphytotic conditions for four successive generations. In the rust-free environment, one near-isogenic line. CI 9192, which was inferior in yielding ability, was reduced significantly from 20% to 10% of the mixture, and CI 9184, which has no yield deviation from normal, increased from 20% to 38%. The other three near-isogenic lines were stable at about 20%. Also, in the rust line of descent. CI 9192 and CI 9184, respectively, decreased and increased significantly. Our results have implications with respect to seed production practices for multiline cultivars: they also raise the question of whether a multiline is stable enough in composition to be called a cultivar.Journal Paper No. J-10027 from the Iowa Agric. and Home Econ. Summary Avena sterilis introductions from the Middle East were useful sources of genes for improving the grain yield of adapted A. sativa cultivars for midwestern US. Introgression of genes from A. sterilis materials into A. sativa oat breeding populations was readily accomplished through a backcrossing procedure. Backcrossing successfully accomplished the recombination required to introgress complexly inherited traits. The BC1F2, BC2F2, BC3F2, and BC4F2 generations appeared to be best for selecting high-yielding transgressive segregates from the A. sativa x A. sterilis crosses.Journal Paper No. J-7919 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa 50010. Summary The objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficacy of S1-recurrent selection for increasing groat (caryopsis)-protein yield in oat (Avena sativa L.) and to compare the effects of three selection strategies on correlated responses in groat yield and groat-protein concentration. Three S1-recurrent selection programs were conducted for five cycles. Selection criteria in each program (line of descent) emphasized different components of protein yield; high grain yield in HG, both high grain yield and high groat-protein concentration in HP, and protein yield per se in HGP. Thirty to sixty random S0-derived lines from each cycle and ten check lines were evaluated in one year at two locations to estimate the response to selection. Groat-protein yield increased 4.4% cycle-1 in HG, 3.4% cycle-1 in HP, and 2.2% cycle-1 in HGP. Gains in groat yield were 7% cycle-1 in HG, 1% cycle-1 in HP, and 3% cycle-1 in HGP. Mean groat-protein yield and groat yield in the cycle 5 (C5) populations of all three lines of descent were equal to or slightly higher than those of high yielding cultivars. The HG line of descent showed a significant decrease from 193 to 175 g kg-1 groat protein, while the HP line of descent showed a significant increase from 202 to 218 g kg-1. The HGP line of descent showed a small but significant decline in groat protein from 200 to 192 g kg-1. In comparison, the high-protein commercial cultivars contained about 210 g kg-1 groat protein. The C5 population of the HP line of descent had a unique combination of high groat yield and high groat-protein concentration. Genotypic variances for groat-protein yield, groat yield, and groat-protein concentration were not always significant in the various cycles of the three lines of descent, but in no instance was there a consistent change from C0 to C5. S1-recurrent selection was effective for increasing groat-protein yield of oat, and with the proper germplasm and selection strategy both groat yield and groat-protein concentration can be improved simultaneously.Abbreviations C - cycle - GPC - groat-protein concentration (a groat is the part of an oat grain that is the actual seed or caryopsis, rather than the hull) - GPY - groat-protein yield - GTY - groat yield - HG - selection for protein yield through high grain yield - HGP - selection for protein yield per se - HP - selection for protein yield through high grain yield and high protein concentration Journal Paper No. J-15287 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, IA 50011, USA. Summary The resistance sources among various test cultivars of urdbean to Colletotrichum truncatum, a leaf spotting pathogen, were identified and genetics of resistance was worked out by studying F1, F2 and F3 generations of crosses between resistant cultivars and the susceptible cv. Kulu 4 and of those among the resistant parents. The resistance was found to be controlled by single dominant genes and the resistance genes were non-allelic.  相似文献

Summary Significant advances in increasing tolerance to the leafhopper Empoasca kraemeri Ross & Moore in common bean have been obtained using a new breeding scheme where yield under leafhopper attack is the principal selection criterion in the evaluation of progenies. However, to further refine this breeding scheme, a study was conducted to determine whether selection for nonprotected yield would be more effective in early versus late generations. Two selection strategies were compared. In Strategy I, early generation selections in the F2 and F3 were compared to Strategy II where late generation selections were made in the F4 and F5, with the F2 and F3 generations advanced using single pod descent and bulk practices, respectively. Yield trials of the F6 lines from both selection strategies were conducted under nonprotected and insecticide protected treatments. No significant differences were detected between the two selection strategies. However, Strategy II did produce advanced lines with greater nonprotected yields than did Strategy I, with the best F6 line, in three out of four crosses, coming out of Strategy II. Late generation selection is recommended over early generation selection. Results of the new leafhopper breeding scheme, based on yield, are compared to the old breeding scheme where selections were made using visual selection practices in early generations.  相似文献

Parental, F1, F2, BC1, BC2, BC11, BC12, BC21, BC22, BC1 self and BC2 selfed generations of three crosses involving six cultivars of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) were studied for grains per spike under normal and late sown environments to analyze the nature of gene effects. A 10-parameter model did not fully account for the differences among the generation means. In two cases more complex interactions or linkage were involved in the inheritance of grains per spike in durum. Both digenic and trigenic epistatic interactions had a role in controlling the inheritance of grains per spike, however, trigenic interactions contributed more than digenic interactions. Non-fixable gene effects were many times higher than fixable ones in all three crosses and in both sowing environments indicating a major role of non-additive gene effects in the inheritance of this trait. Duplicate epistasis between sets of three genes under both environments was recorded for the cross Raj 911 × DWL 5002. Epistatic interactions, particularly the trigenic ones, contributed the maximum significant heterosis. Epistatic interactions involving dominance in the F2 generations caused significant inbreeding depression. Selective diallel mating and/or biparental mating could be used for amelioration of grains per spike in durum wheat.  相似文献

Summary Four selection strategies were used on four sets of oat lines to select for grain yield. Two of these used uniform environments whereby sequential selection of the high-yielding lines occurred in continuous high- or continuous low-productivity environments. These are referred to as high and low uniform selection strategies, respectively. The other two selection strategies were conducted by sequential selection of the high-yielding lines in alternating high- and low-productivity environments. They are referred to as high and low shuttle selection strategies, respectively, with high and low designating the productivity of the first environment in the sequence. After three or four cycles of selection, the surviving lines and a random sample from each set were evaluated for mean grain yield, grain yield response to improving environments, and stability of grain yield, in a range of environments typical of oat production on Iowa farms.Grain yield and regression response for all selection strategies, when calculated across all sets of lines, were significantly greater than corresponding values for random samples. Stability was unchanged. The uniform-high and uniform-low strategies gave the greatest and the smallest gains in mean grain yield, respectively, with the shuttle strategies giving intermediate gains. Shuttle selection in predominantly high-productivity environments increased grain yield more than shuttle selection in predominantly low-productivity environments. The uniform-strategy followed by the shuttle-high strategy identified entries with superior performance in high productivity environments. Increased gain in mean grain yield across all environments was associated with increased number of selection cycles conducted in high-productivity environments.Journal Paper No. J-15252 of the Iowa Agric. and Home Econ. The common bacterial blight pathogen [Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap)] is a limiting factor for common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) production worldwide and resistance to the pathogen in most commercial cultivars is inadequate. Variability in virulence of the bacterial pathogen has been observed in strains isolated from Puerto Rico and Central America. A few common bean lines show a differential reaction when inoculated with different Xap strains, indicating the presence of pathogenic races. In order to study the inheritance of resistance to common bacterial blight in common bean, a breeding line that showed a differential foliar reaction to Xap strains was selected and was crossed with a susceptible parent. The inheritance of resistance to one of the selected Xap races was determined by analysis of segregation patterns in the F1, F2, F3 and F4 generations from the cross between the resistant parent PR0313-58 and the susceptible parent ‘Rosada Nativa’. The F1, F2 and F3 generations were tested under greenhouse conditions. Resistant and susceptible F3:4 sister lines were tested in the field. The statistical analysis of all generations followed the model for a dominant resistance gene. The resistant phenotype was found to co-segregate with the SCAR SAP6 marker, located on LG 10. These results fit the hypothesis that resistance is controlled by a single dominant gene. The symbol proposed for the resistance gene is Xap-1 and for the bacterial race, XapV1.  相似文献

Summary The genetics of resistance to angular leaf spot caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci in Nicotiana tabacum cultivars Burley 21 and Kentucky 14 was investigated by studying disease reactions to three isolates of parental, F1, F2 and backcross generations derived from crosses between the resistant cultivars and the susceptible cultivar Judy's Pride. Studies were conducted in the greenhouse and in field plant beds. Chi-square values were computed to determine whether the observed ratios for disease reactions deviated from expected Mendelian ratios for a single, dominant gene controlling resistance to angular leaf spot in tobacco. Based on the resistance of the F1 and the backcross generation to the resistant parent (BC-R), a 3 resistant: 1 susceptible segregation ratio in the F2, and a 1 resistant: 1 susceptible segregation ratio in the backcross generation to the susceptible parent (BC-S), it was concluded that resistance to three isolates of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci is governed by a single, dominant gene.  相似文献

Effective utilisation of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) germplasm tolerant to high manganese (Mn) in a breeding program requires an understanding of the genetics of Mn tolerance. Five wheat cultivars differing in their response to high Mn were crossed in a half diallel design with no reciprocals. Seedlings of parents and progeny generations were phenotyped in high Mn nutrient solutions. Total chlorophyll concentration, which was positively correlated with leaf elongation rate during recovery from Mn stress, was used for phenotyping Mn tolerance. Means of chlorophyll concentration of P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1, and BC2 generations, in all crosses which showed significant variation among generations, were subjected to line crosses analysis to estimate gene effects. The continuous frequency distribution of seedlings with differential Mn tolerance, the similarity of the F1 and F2 means, and the high and significant levels of additive gene action indicated quantitative inheritance for Mn tolerance at seedling stage. A preponderance of additive effects indicated that selection for Mn tolerance in early generations should be effective.  相似文献

Summary Relationships among the traits protein percentage, grain yield, and protein yield of oats were studied with F2-derived lines in F3 and F4 from 27 matings obtained by crossing high-protein with high-yield oat lines. High-protein parents were (a) selections from an Avena sativa bulk, (b) selections from three-way matings in which an initial parent was A. sterilss, and (c) cultivars. High-yield parents were derived from backcross populations involving A. sterilis accessions as donor parents.Significnnt genetic variation existed among F2-derived lines for grain and protein yield in all matings and for protein percentage in all but one mating.Protein percentage had a highly significant negative correlation with grain yield (r=–0.33**) when pooled over all matings, but in five, these two traits were not correlated. Overall, protein percentage showed a small negative correlation with protein yield (r=–0.09*), and protein and grain yields had a high positive association (r=0.98**). F2-derived lines with both high protein percentage and high grain yield were obtained.High transgressive segregates for protein percentage occurred in two matings, for grain yield in nine, and for protein yield in 14. Most high transgressive segregates for protein yield were high because of high grain yield only, but in four matings, lines were found where protein yield was increased by concurrent increases in both protein percentage and grain yield.Only a few specific parental combinations between high-protein and high-yield parents produced segregates in which increased protein percentage contributed materially to high-protein yields.Journal Paper No. J-11264 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Stn., Ames, Iowa 50011. Summary Six chickpea lines resistant to Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Lab. were crossed to four susceptible cultivars. The hybrids were resistant in all the crosses except the crosses where resistant line BRG 8 was involved. Segregation pattern for diseases reaction in F2, BCP1, BCP2 and F3 generations in field and glasshouse conditions revealed that resistance to Ascochyta blight is under the control of a single dominant gene in EC 26446, PG 82-1, P 919, P 1252-1 and NEC 2451 while a recessive gene is responsible in BRG 8. Allelic tests indicated the presence of three independently segregating genes for resistance; one dominant gene in P 1215-1 and one in EC 26446 and PG 82-1, and a recessive one in BRG 8.Research paper No. 3600  相似文献

Summary Two breeding procedures were compared in two cowpea crosses. Both procedures were started from the same selected F2 plants in each cross. For the early generation yield testing, the F3 lines were yield tested and a pedigree and bulk methods followed in F4 and F5. Each F5 line was bulked to provide seed for a yield test in F6. In the Single Seed Descent (SSD) procedure, a single seed was taken from each F2 plant to produce the F3 generation. The procedure was repeated for the F4 and F5. The F6 SSD lines and the F6 yield testing lines were compared in yield tests. The results showed that differences in yielding ability of F3 lines persisted over generations indicating that selection was effective. This was confirmed by the high significant correlations between F3 yields and those of later generations which ranged from r=0.51* to 0.85**.The grain yields of lines derived by the single seed descent procedure were as good as those derived from early generation yield testing.Significant linear correlation between visual rating of F3 and F6 yields with actual yields revealed that it is possible to identify promising lines of cowpea visually.  相似文献

Summary Eight oat cultivars and experimental lines from four germplasm sources were crossed in a diallel mating design without reciprocals. F1 heterosis for grain yield was evaluated in two experiments, and 48 F2-derived lines from each of the 28 matings were evaluated for bundle weight, grain yield, straw yield, harvest index, height, and heading date in two experiments. Number of transgressive segregates per trait and generalized genetic variance were calculated for each mating. Genealogical distance for each mating was obtained by using coefficient of kinship based on the pedigree of the parents. The relationship between genealogical distance and the three types of breeding behaviour was examined via correlation and regression. Significant correlations occurred only for genealogical distance with numbers of transgressive segregates for height and with generalized genetic variances. Both were positive. Significant heterosis was observed for matings of more distantly related parents. Regressions on genealogical distance, when significant, were linear. Genealogical distance between parents was positive associated with diversity on the basis of breeding behavior.Journal Paper No. J-11874 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Station, Iowa State Univ., Ames, IA 50011. Summary Heterosis and epistasis in spring oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) was analysed by comparing generation means for ten agronomic traits. Parents, F2, F3 and F6 generations of four crosses with Swedish and French material were investigated. The F2 was 11% higher in yield, earlier in flowering time, and slightly later in maturation when compared with the parents. Randomly derived single seed descent lines had an 8% lower yield, were later flowering and maturing than the parents in F6. This poorer average performance of recombinant lines is explained by the loss of favourable epistatic interactions present in the parents.  相似文献

Summary Parent-offspring regression was used to estimate heritability for three traits (-glucan content, groat percentage, and resistance to crown rust (Puccinia coronata Cda. f. sp. avenae Eriks.) in oat (Avena sativa L.). The populations used were derived from two crosses, Nova x Marion QC and Sylva x Marion QC. Marion QC was used as a parent because other research had shown that it is relatively high in -glucan, a trait for which heritability had not previously been estimated. Nova and Sylva are similar in adaptation to Marion QC, and Sylva may be a source of general resistance to crown rust. Random F5 plants were grown in a greenhouse, and their F6 and F7 progeny were grown in replicated field trials. Heritability estimates for the two grain quality traits were based on regression of F6 values on F5 values, F7 values on F6 values, and F7 values on F5 values. Heritability estimates for -glucan content were between 0.27 and 0.45. The highest estimate was the one based on the F6 and F7 generations of Sylva x Marion QC: 0.45, compared to estimates of 0.32 or less for earlier generations of the same cross, and to estimates of 0.35 or less for all generations of Nova x Marion QC. Heritability estimates for groat percentage were all between 0.23 and 0.32. The F6 and F7 generations were evaluated for resistance to crown rust resistance. The Sylva x Marion QC cross seemed to segregate for heritable resistance (h 2=0.31) but the Nova x Marion QC cross did not (h 2=0.07). Several lines from the Sylva x Marion QC cross had low symptoms in both the F6 and F7 generations. There were no strong genetic correlations among the traits.  相似文献
