Seventy nine genotypes of tomato (15 lines, four testers and their 60 F1 hybrids produced in line × tester fashion) were evaluated under normal (E1) and late planting (E2) conditions in the Department of Vegetable Crops, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India, to determine the nature of gene action controlling yield, quality and shelf life characteristics and to identify a few good combiner genotypes which may be used in further breeding programmes to extend the fruit availability period of tomato in North Indian plains. The lines were significantly different from testers for most of the characters thereby justifying the choice of testers. Additive gene action was predominant for days to ripening, total yield per plant, marketable yield per plant, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight, fruit shape index and lycopene in both the environments, whereas non-additive genetic variance predominated in controlling firmness index, number of locules, pericarp thickness, alcohol insoluble solids (AIS), dry matter, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity, TSS:Acid ratio, pH, ascorbic acid and shelf life, under both normal and late planting conditions. The best general combining ability (gca) effects, among females, in respect of yield per plant were shown by Spectrum in E1 and by LT-42 in E2. Among the testers, the best gca values in both the environments were possessed by nor-RM-1 for total yield per plant, marketable yield per plant, number of fruits per plant, dry matter and TSS; by rin-RM-2 for firmness index, pericarp thickness and alcohol insoluble solids; by alc-IIHR-2050 for average fruit weight, number of locules and shelf life and by alc-IIHR-2052 for lycopene. The gca of ripening mutants had a nice consonance with their per se performance for most of the characters indicating that additive gene action was operative in these mutants for majority of the traits.  相似文献

A complete diallel cross study of six local populations of Iranian melon (Eyvanaki, Abasali, Tashkandi, Hose-sorkh, Mashhadi and Nahavand) and one foreign cultivar (Ananasi) was carried out. We investigated maturity, average weight per fruit, yield and acceptable yield in the pruning conditions over a period of two planting seasons. The analysis of variance for all of the characteristics indicated highly significant differences among genotypes. Additive gene effects were most important with respect to average weight per fruit and yield, while genetic dominance effects mainly controlled fruit maturity and acceptable yield. The reciprocal effects were significant for yield, acceptable yield and fruit maturity. Nahavand and Tashkandi had significant positive general combining ability effects for yield and acceptable yield. Favourable heterosis over the better parent was found for average weight per fruit, yield and acceptable yield. Thus, there is the potential to generate superior cultivars in segregant generation and hybrid production.  相似文献

Summary Early testing was evaluated for efficiency as a procedure for selecting among lines for yield (total and marketable fruit number), earliness and fruit quality (shape, color and seedcell size) in 24 sets of lines developed at random from a pickling cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) population. The advantage of early testing was calculated using the regression of S6 on S1 performance. The amount of effort required in worker-hours and the theoretical gain from selection were also considered in estimating the advantage of early testing. Early testing for specific combining ability and for general combining ability was up to 2.05 times as efficient as late testing for total yield, and up to 2.29 times as efficient as late testing for earliness. Early testing was not efficient for selection for the fruit quality traits measured, nor for inbred performance per se.  相似文献

Summary Ten peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) lines, two from each of five centers of diversity in South America, and the F2 generation of all possible crosses among them were used to characterize the variation for yield, fruit and seed traits and protein and oil content and to determine the breeding potential of the parents. Two of the parental lines belong to subspecies hypogaea and the other eight to subspecies fastigiata.Several crosses gave heterotic responses for yield. The parents of the crosses with significant heterosis generally came from different centers of diversity.Variation among both general and specific combining abilities was significant for all traits with the exception of the SCA estimate for protein percent. The component of variation for GCA was larger than the SCA component for all traits.A Spanish line and a Valencia-like intermediate line from the Guarani region had the highest GCA effects for fruit yield, seed yield and meat content and transmitted consistently their characteristics to their F2 progeny. Some lines showed significant but small maternal effects for oil, protein and oil + protein percent. Differences between reciprocal crosses were significant for fruit length, fruit weight and oil + protein percent.A significant portion of the variation among crosses was explained by differences among parental lines within centers of diversity. This supports the fact that centers are founded because of the diversity of the peanuts grown there. The performance of parental lines per se was useful in predicting the performance of the lines in hybrid combination for all traits except fruit yield.Paper number 6141 of the Journal Series of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service (USA). Inheritance of Partial Male-Sterility in Guar   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A partial male-sterility system was found in a released guar, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub. (2n = 2x = 14), breeding line, TX76-3285. Partially male-sterile plants produce some functional pollen, but with suitable genetic markers may be used to facilitate crossing in breeding programs. In addition, self fertilization allows partially male-sterile plants to be propagated sexually as homozygotes, once placed in breeding lines. The objective of the present study was to determine the inheritance of a partial male-sterility system in guar. Partial male-sterility appeared to be controlled by two genes, with one gene acting in a dominant epistatic manner and the second gene by incomplete dominance. The trait was expressed on every raceme beginning at about 4 to 6 weeks after planting in field-grown plants. The gene symbols, “pms 1” and “Pms 2” are proposed for the new trait. Segregation data indicated that alleles for pubescence segregated independently of alleles for partial male-sterility. Partial male-sterility in guar may be useful in the production of hybrid seed for breeding and genetic research.  相似文献

Genotype × environment interaction (GEI) affects marketable fruit yield and average fruit weight of both hybrid and open-pollinated (OP) tomato genotypes. Cultivars vary significantly for marketable fruit yield, with hybrid cultivars having, on average, higher yield than OP cultivars. However, information is scanty on environmental factors affecting the differential response of tomato genotypes across environments. Hence, the aim of this research was to use factorial regression (FR) and partial least squares (PLS) regression, which incorporate external environmental and genotypic covariables directly into the model for interpreting GEI. In this research, data from an FAO multi-environment trial comprising 15 tomato genotypes (7 hybrid and 8 OP) evaluated in 18 locations of Latin America and the Caribbean were analyzed using FR and PLS. Environmental factors such as days to harvest, soil pH, mean temperature (MET), potassium available in the soil, and phosphorus fertilizer accounted for a sizeable portion of GEI for marketable fruit yield, whereas trimming, irrigation, soil organic matter, and nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers were important environmental covariables for explaining GEI of average fruit weight. Locations with relatively high minimum and mean temperatures favored the marketable fruit yield of OP heat-tolerant lines CL 5915-223 and CL 5915-93. An OP cultivar (Catalina) and a hybrid (Apla) showed average marketable fruit yield across environments, while two hybrids (Sunny and Luxor) exhibited outstanding marketable fruit yield in high yielding locations (due to lower temperatures and higher pH) but a sharp yield loss in poor environments. Two stable hybrid genotypes in high yielding environments, Narita and BHN-39, also showed high and stable yield in average and low yielding environments.  相似文献

Summary Head blight caused by Fusarium culmorum and F. graminearum is damaging in all winter rye (Secale cereale L.) growing areas. For hybrid breeding, the relative magnitude of general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) is a crucial parameter for developing appropriate selection procedures. Forty single-cross hybrids were produced by crossing six and seven inbred lines of the Petkus and Carsten gene pool, respectively, in a factorial design. Hybrids were evaluated in two years with artificial F. culmorum inoculation. Resistance traits were head blight rating and grain weight relative to the non-inoculated control. Both resistance traits were closely correlated across both years (r-0.8, P=0.01). Significant genotypic variation was found for both traits with medium to high estimates of heritability (h2=0.6-0.8). Components of variance for GCA were, across years, 10 and 6 times larger than those for SCA for head blight rating and relative grain weight, respectively. Significant SCA effects were found for 15 to 20% of all cross combinations across both traits in each year. SCA effects were, however, inconsistent over years leading to a high SCA-year interaction. In conclusion, resistance to Fusarium head blight among the interpool hybrids tested was conditioned mainly by additive gene action that could be utilized by recurrent selection in multi-environment trials.Abbreviations GCA general combining ability - SCA specific combining ability  相似文献

Summary A factorial mating design with six 4x cultivars as stylar parents mated to three groups of pollen parents (4x cultivars, 4x high protein selections, and 2x S. phureja) was used to study breeding behavior of yield, tuber set, marketable yield and hollow heart in potatoes. Mean yield for the 4x-2x hybrids was equivalent to that of their cultivar parents although yield components, tuber set and average tuber size, were greater and less, respectively, than the cultivar parents. High estimates of general combining ability were found in both pollen and stylar parents for yield, tuber set, marketable yield, number of marketable tubers and hollow heart in all three hybrid populations. Specific combining ability estimates were significant only for yield and hollow heart. Frequency of white-fleshed 4x-2x progeny of five heterozygous yellow-fleshed 2x phureja genotypes was used to confirm cytological identification of a first division restitution mechanism operative in the 2x parents. Although three of these phureja genotypes generated high-yielding progeny, two others produced 4x-2x progeny with mean yield similar to that of hybrids among 4x cultivars.Scientific journal series article 11,601 of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station.  相似文献

An investigation was carried out to assess the efficiency of A2 cytoplasmic-nuclear male-sterility (CMS) system in comparison to the widely used A1 cytoplasm in terms of general combining ability (gca) effects of male-sterile (A-) lines and mean performance, specific combining ability (sca) effects and mid-parent heterosis of hybrids for days to 50% flowering, plant height and grain yield at International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh, India in 2001 and 2002 rainy seasons. The material for the study consisted of six pairs of iso-nuclear, allo-plasmic (A1 and A2) A-lines and 36 iso-nuclear hybrids produced by crossing these A-lines with three dual restorer (R-) lines. The results revealed that cytoplasm and its first-order interaction with year, R- and A-lines did not appear to contribute to variation in iso-nuclear hybrids for plant height and grain yield. Cytoplasm had limited effect on gca effects of A-lines and on sca effects and mid-parent heterosis of iso-nuclear hybrids for days to 50% flowering, plant height and grain yield. The mean days to 50% flowering, plant height and grain yield of A2 cytoplasm-based hybrids were comparable with those of widely used A1 cytoplasm-based hybrids. The relative frequency of the occurrence of the A1- and A2-based hybrids with significant sca effects and mid-parent heterosis indicated that A2 CMS system is as efficient as A1 with a slight edge over A1 for commercial exploitation. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to opportunities for broadening not only cytoplasm base but also nuclear genetic base of both the hybrid parents.  相似文献

Phenotypic variation and pattern ofinheritance was investigated for plant andfruit traits in Japanese quince (Chaenomeles japonica, Maloideae). Japanesequince is a minor fruit crop in Latvia andLithuania, and is presently being developedfor production of juice, aroma and fruitfibre in Sweden and Finland. General andspecific combining ability was estimatedfor five plant vegetative traits, eightfruit yield and morphology traits, and fivefruit biochemistry traits in a studypopulation consisting of 14 hybridfamilies. Thorniness seems to be controlledprimarily by a single locus. All othertraits studied appear to be governedprimarily by additive genes, as judged fromgeneral combining ability estimates.Significant specific combining ability(SCA) was detected for yield, plant heightand some fruit traits. However, therelative contribution of SCA to the overallgenetic variance was in general low. Anefficient breeding strategy for Japanesequince could therefore be based onrecurrent selection.  相似文献

For a better understanding of the inheritance of seed yield traits in Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) Willd., a half-diallelic crossing experiment with six diverse but uniform breeding lines was conducted. True hybrid plants were detected by means of differences in panicle colour in 14 out of the 15 crosses performed. The agronomic performance of 14 F2 populations and six parental lines was evaluated in field trials on fertile clay soil. General and specific combining ability of the lines (GCA and SCA) were estimated. Highly significant differences in GCA effects were found between the lines for plant height at maturity, early flowering, early maturity, seed yield and thousand seed weight. Significant SCA effects were only found for plant height at maturity. However, SCA effects were rather small and accounted for 7% of the total variance. The finding of large GCA effects and low SCA effects suggests that best selection results could be expected from crosses between the agronomic best performing genotypes. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Handcrosses were made in a factorial manner with 24 Vicia faba inbred lines m three sets, each between four male and four female parents. The resulting 48 hybrids, their parental inbreds and three commercial varieties were grown in performance trials during the years 1985—87 with three replications at one location. Yield and yield components were recorded on single plant basis. The average superiority of the hybrids above the control varieties was 26 % in plant yield. The best crosses outyielded the controls by more than 50 %. However, a few inbred lines also reached, the yield level of the controls. The average heterosis was significant for all characters except for maturity date. In plant yield the average heterosis was 75%, ranging between 34% and 148% in the various cross combinations. The highest average heterosis of 110 % was observed in yield at the lateral stems. In all characters the best inbreds were superior to the lower hybrids and in some characters even equal to the average of the hybrids. A strong positive relationship was found for all characters between hybrid performance and mid-parent value and between the per se performance of the inbreds and their general combining ability. Genotypic differences between the hybrids as well as between the inbreds were highly significant. Most of the variability between the hybrids in all characters were attributed to general combining, ability with only little evidence for specific combining ability. In the discussion the results are evaluated according to the choice of the breeding category of the partial allogamous faba bean species.  相似文献

Ten selected inbred backcross lines (IBL), from a Lycopersicon esculentum cv.‘Peto 84’×Lycopersicon pennellii IBL population, with resistance to beet armyworm (BAW), Spodoptera exigua, higher fruit mass and fruit yield, were crossed with eight elite cultivated L. esculentum inbred lines in a Design II mating design. Three elite inbreds were also crossed to ‘Peto 84′, the IBL recurrent parent, as a control for combining ability. Field plots of all resulting F1 progenies and control cultivars were inoculated with BAW eggs and evaluated for resistance to BAW, fruit mass, fruit yield, vine size and maturity at three field locations. Reductions in fruit damage by BAW were found in four of the 10 IBL F1 progenies. Significant male and female general combining ability (GCA) estimates for BAW resistance were observed, but significant specific combining ability for BAW resistance was not detected. The fruit mass of F1 hybrids was significantly lower than large-fruited controls, but was not significantly different from elite inbred by ‘Peto 95’F1 hybrids. Selection based on inbred performance identified IBL with positive GCA for BAW resistance and yields in Design II hybrids. BAW resistance in the 09 selected IBL and IBL- derived F1 progeny was associated with two undesirable traits, later maturity and larger vine size. Index selection of IBL was more effective at identifying IBL with positive GCA for fruit mass and fruit yield than GCA for BAW resistance.  相似文献

Summary In Trinidad, maize (Zea mays L.) is primarily harvested in the immature stage as green ears for human consumption. The purchase of popular imported hybrid seed has become a substantial component of the economic inputs of maize production. The objectives of this study were to investigate combining abilities and heterotic patterns among available open-pollinated varieties and to assess correlations among five important traits: time to silking, plant height, grain yield, ear size, and marketable ears per hectare. General combining ability was significant for all traits. Specific combining ability was significant for all traits except ear size. Three intervarietal crosses showed moderate levels of heterosis (10–27%), and several yielded similarly to the control hybrids, Pioneer X304 and Pioneer 3078. The cross Acid Soil Tolerant 1991 SA-3 X ICTA Farm Corn was selected as the most suitable base population for mass selection. Phenotypic and genotypic correlations among the five traits studied were all positive and significant. Populations which flowered early were shorter and yielded less than the late flowering and taller populations and population crosses included in this study.  相似文献

Summary Three Cucumis sativus L. (CS) lines adapted to USA growing conditions were used as female parents in crosses to one line each of seven Cucumis sativus var. hardwickii (R.) Alef. (CH) accessions used as male parents to determine the relative combining ability of the CH accessions for six horticultural characters. The 21 F1 progenies were grown in a randomized complete block design in two locations and evaluated for fruit number, lateral branch number, fruit length, fruit length/diameter ratio, number of female flowering nodes, and days to anthesis. General combining ability (GCA) was significant for all characters in each location. Specific combining ability (SCA) was significant for all characters except days to anthesis in one location and lateral branch number in both locations. Significant location × combining ability interactions were also evident for several characters. Results suggest that CH may be useful for improving fruit yield in commercial cucumber, but that limitations may lie in the attainment of acceptable fruit.Research supported by the College of Agric. and Life Sci., Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison; USDA, ARS, and by funds from Pickle Packers Intl., Inc. Predicting single‐cross performance is of high importance to improve the efficiency of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) hybrid breeding programmes. We used experimental data from inter‐ and intragroup sunflower hybrids and their parental lines adapted to Central Europe to (i) study the genetic diversity and combining ability and (ii) examine the accuracy to predict hybrid performance based on phenotypic and genomic data. We evaluated 133 intragroup and 104 intergroup hybrids with their parental lines in replicated trials at four environments for grain yield, oil yield and oil content. Furthermore, the parental lines were fingerprinted with 572 AFLP markers. Variance due to specific combining ability was comparable for intergroup and intragroup crosses. This suggested a lack of clearly defined heterotic groups for the sample of studied sunflower lines. Prediction accuracy of hybrid performance based on general combining ability effects was high and could not be increased using genomic selection approaches. For situations where no information on GCA effects of parental lines was available, hybrid prediction based on genomic selection methods was accurate for groups of related lines. For groups of unrelated lines, however, we observed a strong decrease in the prediction accuracy. This suggests that prediction of hybrid performance for crosses based on genetically distant parents remains challenging.
