Summary Open-pollinated seed of 500 genotypes of commercial cultivars, breeding selections and wild species of apples (Malus × domestica) was collected from overseas mixed-clone repositories. This is to generate the first generation of the new Apple Breeding Population.Subsequent generations will be intercrossed in a pair-crossing design. Recurrent selection for general combining ability (GCA) is the breeding method used for genetic improvement of the Breeding Population. Every parent in the control-pollinated breeding population is tested for GCA using a polycross mating design. The best individuals of the Breeding Population, intensively selected between families using the polycross GCA estimates, and also within families are intermated to produce a Cultivar Production Population. Trees selected from this have then to be evaluated in grafted clonal tests before commercial release. Each generation, a new Breeding Population of 500 genotypes is selected from the pair-cross families, based on parental GCA values (from polycross tests), full-sib family means and individual performance and then intercrossed. Greatest emphasis will be on within-family selection not between-family, so as to avoid reducing the effective population size.  相似文献

Summary Reciprocal recurrent selection was carried out with two populations of maize (Zea mays L.) having good combining ability. We selected for higher grain yield, early maturity, shorter plant height and lodging resistance. Two cycles were completed in two years (four seasons), by resorting to late planting of S1 lines for recombination in the main season in which top-cross families were assessed. Top-crosses and selfings were made in the off-season. The original and improved versions of the populations and their crosses were evaluated in multilocation trials. The superiority of the population hybrid was 10.3% for grain yield, 5.5% for plant height and 1.8 days to silk. The improved hybrid had delayed leaf senescence and better resistance to lodging and post-flowering stalk rots. Among the yield components, only ear girth showed improvement. Syn 2 of the improved population cross showed a yield reduction of 6.2% in comparison to Syn 1. Intrapopulation gains were not significant except for lodging resistance in one population.  相似文献

Summary Phenotypic stability of bacterial leaf spot resistance in peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) regenerants, either selected at the cellular level for insensitivity to a toxic culture filtrate of Xanthomonas campestris pv. pruni or screened at the whole plant level for resistance to X. campestris pv. pruni, was investigated. A detached-leaf bioassay was used to evaluate the original regenerants again after three years in the greenhouse and also after a two to three year cycle of tissue culture propagation. Peach trees derived through micropropagation from the original regenerants were also evaluated after one to three years growth in the field. Although leaf spot resistance was retained in some regenerants over time in the greenhouse, following in vitro propagation, and under field conditions, resistance was either lost or not expressed in others. Regenerants # 19-1 and #156-6, derived from embryo callus of bacterial spot susceptible Sunhigh, were significantly more resistant than Sunhigh. High levels of resistance were exhibited in greenhouse plants and field-grown trees of regenerant #122-1, derived from embryo callus of moderately resistant Redhaven. This research provides additional evidence that selecting or screening for somaclonal variants with disease resistance is a feasible approach to obtaining peach trees with increased levels of bacterial spot resistance.Abbreviations TC Tissue-Cultured - TF Toxic culture Filtrate  相似文献

Summary The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of the backcross breeding method to improve an existing variety (Hallmark) for higher seed retention. The recurrent parent was cv. Hallmark (H) and the donor parent was cv. Marta (M). Marta is an Italian cultivar with a high degree of seed retention. Two cycles of backcrossing with selection for higher seed retention were conducted. In each cycle, 1200 plants were grown. In both BC1 F1 and BC2 F1, 20 plants were selected for general features of H and for a high degree of seed retention. The 20 plants of BC2 F1 were intercrossed in 1989. The bulked population thus obtained (HS) was evaluated in 1989–90 together with H and M as spaced plants in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. Regarding seed retention, H had a score of 7.9, M of 1.7 and HS of 2.8, LSD (0.05)=0.8, on a scale from 1 to 9. Consequently HS had similar seed retention to M but similar ear emergence date, plant height and panicle morphology to H. The results confirm that seed shattering is under control of a single partially or completely dominant gene.  相似文献

Summary Thornless Loganberry (TL) is a periclinal chimeral blackberry in which a layer of mutant (thornless) epidermis surrounds a core of wild-type (thorny) tiusse. Due to its chimeral arrangement, TL produces thorny adventitious root cuttings and thorny offspring. To separate the chimera into its components parts, meristems of TL were grow in vitro on modified Murashige and Skoog medium to yield callus and adventitious shoots. One of these shoots has survived, flowered, and produced thornless offspring from seed. The importance of this non-chimeral TL is discussed.List of terms BA 6-benzylaminopurine - GA3 gibberellic acid - NAA naphthalene acetic acid - hybridberry polyploid bramble interspecific hybrids - MS Murashige & Skoog (1962) high mineral salt medium - TL Thornless Loganberry - TLtc tissue culture-derived (non-chimeral) Thornless Loganberry  相似文献

A cluster analysis of wild and domesticated soybean phenotypes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Cluster analysis techniques were used to examine phenotypic variation within the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection. This study included ten Plant Introductions each of the domesticated soybean, Glycine max (L). Merr., the wild soybean, G. soja Sieb. & Zucc., and a disputed species, G. gracilis Skvortz. G. max and G. soja were found to be morphologically distinct entities and G. gracilis was found to be conspecific with G. max. Because G. gracilis probably represents weedy races associated with the cultivated soybean and because gracilis phenotypes can be distinguished from G. max, the designation, G. max forma gracilis, is recommended.Joint contribution: North Central Region, Agricultural Research, Science and Education Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Journal Paper No. J-9389 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa 50011; Project 2107.  相似文献

Summary Eight Populus tremula and six P. tremuloides clones as well as 49 full-sib families were studied in GOT, LAP, 6-PGDH, and SKDH by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. For GOT one polymorphic zone was found and segregation of seven full-sib families suggests Mendelian inheritance. For LAP and 6-PGDH two zones each were clearly scored. For LAP two polymorphic loci were proposed based on the phenotypic segregation of isozyme variants in six and 34 full-sib families, respectively. In 24 full-sibs families the presence of null alleles was inferred for both loci. The genetic control of the upper zone of 6-PGDH was demonstrated by a segregation analysis of 17 full-sib families. SKDH also demonstrated a Mendelian inheritance pattern in 12 of the full-sib families analysed. The electrophoretic patterns of pollen were similar to those of buds, but migration rates of the supposed corresponding isozymes were slightly modified (Lap-B, Skdh, 6Pgdh-A). Lap-A was not present in pollen extracts and hybrid bands were not found when gels were stained for dimeric enzymes (6-PGDH, GOT).  相似文献

Summary Available evidences drawn from biosystematics, evolutionary biology, biogeography, archaeology, history, anthropology, paleo-geology and paleo-meteorology are pooled to reconstruct the series of events that led to the cosmopolitan cultivation of the Asian cultivated rice (O. sativa) and the regionalized planting of the African cultigen (O. glaberrima) in West Africa. The genus Oryza originated in the Gondwanaland continents and, following the fracture of the supercontinent, became widely distributed in the humid tropics of Africa, South America, South and Southeast Asia, and Oceania. The two cultivated species have had a common progenitor in the distant past. Parallel and independent evolutionary processes occurred in Africa and in Asia, following the sequence of: wild perennialwild annualcultivated annual. The weed races also contributed to the differentiation of the cultivated annuals. The corresponding members of the above series are O. longistaminata Chev. et Roehr., O. barthii A. Chev., O. glaberrima Steud., and the stapfii forms of O. glaberrima in Africa; O. rufipogon Griff., O. nivara Sharma et Shastry, O. sativa L., and the spontanea forms of O. sativa in Asia. The differentiation and diversification of the annuals in South Asia were accelerated by marked climatic changes following the last glacial age, dispersal of plants over latitude or altitude, human selection, and manipulation of the cultural environment.Cultivation of rice began in many parts of South and Southeast Asia, probably first in Ancient India. Cultural techniques such as puddling and transplanting were first developed in north and central China and later transmitted to Southeast Asia. Wetland culture preceded dryland culture in China, but in hilly areas of Southeast Asia, dryland cultivation is older than lowland culture. The planting method progressed from shifting cultivation to direct sowing in permanent fields, then to transplanting in bunded fields.Widespread dispersal of the Asian cultigen led to the formation of three eco-geographic races (Indica. Sinica or Japonica, and Javanica) and distinct cultural types in monsoon Asia (upland, lowland, and deep water). Varietal types changed readily within the span of a millenium, largely due to cultivators' preferences, socio-religious traditions, and population pressure. Genetic differentiation developed parallel to the ecologic diversification process. The African cultigen developed later than the Asian cultigen and has undergone less diversification. The wild races in South America and Oceania retain their primitive features mainly due to lack of cultivation pressure or dispersal. Both the African and Asian rices are still undergoing evolutionary changes at habitats where the wild, weed, and cultivated races co-exist.  相似文献

Summary Interspecific hybridization between Brassica napus L. (2n=38, a1a1c1c1) and B. oleracea var. capitata L. (2x- and 4x-cabbage; 2n=2x=18, cc and 2n=4x=36, cccc) was carried out for the purpose of transferring clubroot disease resistance from the amphidiploid species to cabbage. Nineteen hybrids with three different chromosome levels (2n=28, a1c1c; 2n=37, a1c1cc and 2n=55, a1c1cccc) were obtained. The F1 plants were mostly intermediate between the two parents but as the number of c genomes in the hybrids increased, the more closely the hybrids resembled the cabbage parent. All F1 hybrids were resistant when tested against race 2 of Plasmodiophora brassicae wor. The complete dominance of resistance over susceptibility suggested that the gene(s) controlling resistance to this particular race of the clubroot pathogen is probably located on a chromosome of the a genome in Brassica.Contribution No. J654.  相似文献

Summary The maturity rating of maize (Zea mays L.) grown in Galicia (Northwestern Spain) varies from FAO 200 to 600. Later germplasm has usually too much moisture content in the kernel at normal harvesting time so serious problems with storing could appear. Besides, farmers have tended to use earlier varieties in the last few years. All this imposes limitations on the amount of germplasm available to develop varieties adapted to this area.To study the possibility of adapting late, exotic material to the environment of the Atlantic coast of Galicia we carried out six cycles of individual selection on two non-adapted populations of maize (Purdue A and Purdue B). The criterion of selection was early silking and the criterion of response was moisture content of kernel at harvesting. The original populations and the populations obtained after each cycle of selection were crossed to the hybrids CM105 × CM109 (tester Reid) and H99 × H95 (tester Lancaster) and were evaluated in four environments to study the efficiency of the selection scheme. There were significant reductions in days to silking (6.1 and 6.7 days from cycle 0 to cycle 6 for Purdue A and Purdue B, respectively) and grain moisture at harvesting (3.0 and 3.9% from cycle 0 to cycle 6 for Purdue A and Purdue B, respectively). There were also reductions in plant height and yield in both populations. In general, the crosses population × Lancaster were higher for yield than the crosses population × Reid. Yield of the population crosses by both testers decreased after the six cycles of selection probably because of the earlier maturity of the selected populations. Some inbreeding depression may also have occurred.  相似文献

Summary The effect of a recurrent selection procedure was evaluated in a winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) population. Cycle zero (C0) was initiated by crossing six high yielding winter barley cultivars with the short straw cv Onice. The F1's were crossed according to a diallel scheme without reciprocals. A total of 750 S0 plants were derived and evaluated; 329 S0 plants were selected and their progenies (S1 lines) tested. Fifteen S1 lines were chosen and used as parents of cycle 1 (C1), by producing 105 F1 hybrids which simulated a random mating offspring. One hundred and three randomly chosen S1 lines belonging to C0, and 103 S1 lines belonging to C1, were evaluated at two locations. For grain yield a significant difference between cycles was observed. From C0 to C1 the grain yield increased with 307 g/m2. This increase was due to a higher number of seeds per m2. For plant height, heading date and 100-kernel weight no differences between cycles were observed. The positive results obtained in this study indicate the potential usefulness of recurrent selection for developing parents or lines superior for grain yield, with little change in other important agronomic traits.  相似文献

Summary Inheritance of spikelet number per ear and rate of spikelet initiation in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) was studied in the land race spring wheats, 8–23 and 8–27 from Afghanistan, under controlled temperature and photoperiod. Spikelet number per ear was found to be under simple genetic control with dominance for high spikelet number. It is suggested that the gene determining spikelet number does so by determining the rate of spikelet initiation.  相似文献

Summary Adventitious regenerants (somaclones) of Bintje and their vegetative progeny were screened for field resistance to Phytophthora infestans as follows: the area under the disease progress curve was computed and correlated with resistance rating in Bintje and reference varieties. The resistance rating of the somaclones was determined from this relationship.Clones with stable improved field resistance in successive years' trials were detected, however, most of such clones were also maturation mutants. Variation in resistance rating in clone replicates and between years was detected in most clones. The possible basis of the field resistance and reasons for its instability are discussed.Abbreviations AUDPC area under the disease progress curve  相似文献

Summary True-breeding, leaf rust (Puccinia coronata Cda. f. sp. avenae Fraser and Led.) resistant oat lines with somatic chromosome numbers of 42 and 44, were recovered in the advanced generations of a pentaploid hybrid from the cross between C.I. 7232, a leaf rust resistant and dark lemma colored derived tetraploid and Clarion, a susceptible hexaploid oat. Microsporocyte observations and breeding behaviour of these lines and their F1 hybrids with susceptible hexaploid oat cultivars indicated that the 42- and 44-chromosome lines are disomic substitutions (20+1A) and disomic additions (21+1A), respectively, of the same alien chromosome which carries genes for dark colored lemma and leaf rust resistance. The substitution and addition lines possess good field resistance to leaf rust. Plants of substitution lines were less vigorous, shorter, with poor straw and reduced fertility. Addition lines had reduced tillering ability, plant vigour, culm thickness, leaf width and fertility and were late maturing. Progeny tests for resistance indicated that substitution lines are more stable than addition lines. It is suggested that these lines may be of value in a program of radiation-induced gene transfer.  相似文献

Summary Accessions of Hordeum vulgare subsp. spontaneum, the progenitor of cultivated barley, were screened in field and glasshouse trials for resistance to the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. A few selected lines were furthermore hybridized with a modern barley variety and the resulting populations evaluated. High levels of resistance were found among some of the spontaneum accessions resulting in lower aphid growth rates (maximum reduction 57%). Segregation patterns among siblings in F2 populations were continuous, indicating the presence of several genes with possibly additive effects. The usefulness of H. vulgare subsp. spontaneum for breeding aphid resistant barley is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Grain yield reductions of both breadwheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) caused by attacks of Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor Say) are second perhaps only to those caused by inadequate soil moisture in Morocco. To identify effective sources of resistance, 817 entries of common wheat and durum wheat reported to be resistant to Hessian fly were evaluated under natural infestations in Morocco. A large number of genes conferring virulence are present in populations of Moroccan Mayetiola. The genes H1, H2, H3, h4, H6, H7, H8, H9, H10, H11, H14, H15, and H16 as well as the Marquillo, Kawvale and PI 94587 resistance sources are not useful for cereal improvement in North Africa. Luso, which has the gene H12, also appeared susceptible in limited testing. Genotypes having the genes H5 and H13 were identified as significantly reducing larval survial in natural populations of Mayetiola. Of 11 resistant breadwheats identified with unknown genes, seven were from Portugal and three were from the Soviet Union. Although none of the durums tested had high levels of reistance, the two most promising durums were from Portugal. It is proposed that initially H5 be deployed in durum wheats and H13 be used in common wheat improvement. Leaf pubescence appears of little use in reducing the larval survival of Mayetiola.  相似文献

Race 1 fusarium wilt tolerance on banana plants selected by fusaric acid   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary The selection of tolerant variants to race 1 fusarium wilt of banana was carried out through the effects of fusaric acid onin vitro banana multiple bud clumps (MBCs). The MBCs of Maçã cultivar (Musa sp., AAB, Silk), which is susceptible to the race 1 fusarium wilt, were used. And, Nanicão cultivar (AAA, Cavendish subgroup) was used in the tolerant tests as control of a disease tolerant variety. Firstly, to aim at determining an appropriate concentration of the toxin for the tolerant selection, the MBCs were cultured on the Modified Murashige & Skoog medium supplemented with 0.05 to 1.6 mM fusaric acid. The growth on both cultivars was completely inhibited on the medium containing 0.1 mM fusaric acid.Tolerant variants of Maçã were, then, selected with 0.1 mM fusaric acid after chemical mutagen treatment. The results showed an increased tolerance of the selected Maçã plants to the race 1 fungus in greenhouse tests. In vitro selection by fusaric acid is a very useful method for obtaining fusarium disease tolerance, although the tolerance mechanism of the selected plants may be different from that of existing tolerant cultivars.  相似文献

Summary Seedling resistance to wheat stem rust was determined in populations of wild emmer wheat, Triticum dicoccoides, and characterized by means of ecological factors and allozyme genotypes. Reactions to wheat stem rust were studied in 102 single plant accessions of T. dicoccoides from ten populations by inoculation with Puccinia graminis tritici race 14, isolate GSR-739. Six populations displayed different degrees of response polymorphism with reactions ranging from high resistance to complete susceptibility, whereas four populations contained only susceptible plants. In some of the accession, unexplained intrasib variation in resistance and intraplant variation of infection-types were found. Resistance to stem rust was negatively correlated with two ecological factors, altitude and number of Sharav (hot-dry) days which are unfavorable to disease development. Variation in stem rust response was shown to exist in ecogeographic regions where climatic variables enhanced the development of the fungus, conceivably maintained by natural selection. Likewise, allozyme genotypes, single or in multiple loci combinations, appeared to be associated with resistance or susceptibility to rust. Such association need to be verified by genetic studies in order to become established as useful markers.  相似文献

Four cycles of recurrent selection for FHB resistance were conducted in an intermating wheat breeding population using the dominant male-sterile gene ms 2 during 1987–1991.Five cycles of phenotypic mass selection for male-sterile plants were evaluated using the soil-surface inoculation method in Experiment I. Experiment II evaluated changes in FHB scores during five cycles of progeny selection for fertile plants using the single-floret inoculation method. In Experiment I, the average level of FHB response increased to MR level in C4, compared to MS level in C0. The numbers of infected spikelets and diseased kernels decreased 0.32 and 2.68 per cycle, respectively. In Experiment II, the average level of FHB response increased to R level in C4F1. The numbers of infected spikelets and diseased kernels decreased 0.93 and 4.58 per cycle, respectively. In both experiments, the largest selection gains were realized in the first cycle. The frequencies of R and MR individuals were increased significantly. The frequencies of individuals with FHB response equal and/or superior to Sumai 3 were increased to 5–8% in C4 and 25% in C4F1after the fourth cycle. Agronomic traits tended to be slightly improved in selected populations. Compared to 2% in C0, about 34% of lines superior in both FHB resistance and agronomic traits in C4F1 were selected to enter the conventional breeding program for further evaluation. Sixty three semidwarf lines superior in both FHB resistance and yield potential were selected from the F5 generations derived from C1F1 to C4F1. From them, two resistant cultivars with high-yielding potential were developed and commercialized in the Lower Yangtze Valley. Recurrent selection appears to be highly effective and feasible in shifting the average FHB response of the intermating population in the desirable direction, thereby enhancing the frequency of resistant individuals. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary An experiment was conducted in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to: (1) ascertain the efficiency of gridded mass selection; (2) to determine if additional selection efficiency can be achieved through refinement of the gridded mass selection procedure; and (3) to determine if the degree of homozygosity has an effect on response to single-plant selection. Three selection methods [simple mass selection (SMS); gridded mass selection (GMS); and a new rhombic grid selection (RGS)] were applied to four populations [a conventional F2 (CON-F2); an intermated F2 (INT-F2); and 2 partial backcrossed populations] developed from a biparental cross involving the Canadian spring wheat cultivars, Glenlea and Sinton. Averaged over the 4 populations, a single cycle of RGS (10% selection intensity) increased yield by about 9.5%, whereas GMS and SMS increased yield by approximately 4.5% and 3.1%, respectively. The degree of homozygosity of individual plants that make up the population appeared to have an effect on the efficiency of selection. In general, selection was more efficient in the two partial backcrossed populations, and least efficient in the CON-F2 and INT-F2 populations. The largest response to selection (15.9%) was attained when RGS was applied in the backcross to Glenlea population, and the lowest response (1.2%) when SMS was enforced in the CON-F2 population. This paper represents the first report on the efficiency of rhombic grid selection for yield improvement in cereal crops.Contribution No. 550 of Agriculture Canada, Lacombe Research Station, Bag Service 5000, Lacombe, Alberta, Canada TOC ISO  相似文献
