Given the extent of biological invasions in industrialized countries, our understanding of the determinants of overall patterns of biological invasions could gain most from consideration of why exotic species are absent from some areas, rather than from distribution patterns of exotic species. Fish communities were sampled at 381 sites representing 221 rivers in the Adour-Garonne stream system (116 000 km2, SW France). Very few rivers were not colonized by exotic fish species, however, on a local basis, only 33% of the sampling sites hosted exotics. Using General Linear Modelling, we found that patterns of exotic fish (occurrence, number of species, proportion within assemblage) responded to both land-use and physical variables, whereas patterns of native fish only responded to the local meso-scale characteristics of each stream reach from headwaters to mouth. All fish communities were susceptible to invasion regardless of native species richness, and higher native species richness did not decrease the opportunity for establishment by exotic species. The likelihood that exotic fish are absent primarily increased with elevation and with lower human influence upon the land cover, while human-impacted landscapes (agricultural and urban areas) were more likely to host exotic fish and higher numbers of exotic species. In light of urban and agricultural development, our ability to detect responses of exotic species to landscape alterations using a combination of simple physical and land cover variables exemplifies a cost-effective technique for assessing areas at greater invasion risk in large stream systems.  相似文献

Constructed ponds are an important consideration in the conservation of wetland biota in agricultural landscapes. Twenty-two natural ponds and 22 adjacent constructed ponds (farm dams) were surveyed on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales to compare patterns of use by frogs and develop frog conservation recommendations. Farm dams supported similar numbers of frog species to natural ponds, although differences in frog assemblage were observed between the pond types. Limnodynastes tasmaniensis and Uperolia laevigata were significantly more likely to occur at farm dams while L. peronii was more likely to occur at natural ponds. Results suggest waterbodies with high levels of emergent vegetation cover that lack fish are likely to support a high number of frog species, regardless of origin (i.e. natural or constructed). However, it is important for landholders to conserve natural waterbodies as these environments appear likely to support frog species that do not use farm dams.  相似文献

White bass (Morone chrysops), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) inhabiting the heated discharge canal of Duke Power Company's Marshall Steam Station, Lake Norman, North Carolina, were examined for signs of gas-bubble disease (GBD) during the winters of 1982–1983 and 1983–1984. Peak percentages of these fish species with GBD occurred between late February and early May each year, corresponding with peaks in total gas saturation in the discharge water. Cooling and warming water temperatures, and thermal stratification of Lake Norman influenced saturation of dissolved gases in the hypolimnetic intake water of Marshall Steam Station, and directly affected the variability in total gas saturation in the discharge canal. Temperature change in the condenser cooling water and electricity output were unrelated to the within-year variability in total gas saturation and GBD. The use of hypolimnetic water for cooling at this station restricts the time to a few months that levels of total gas saturation are sufficient to induce GBD, but probably led to higher peaks in GBD than if epilimnetic water was used. Among years, levels of GBD in white bass, bluegill, and largemouth bass were higher when electrical demand and mean temperature changes of the condenser cooling water at Marshall Steam Station were higher. Higher incidences in GBD in these fishes also occurred during winters when intake water temperatures were coldest.  相似文献

Management of plant invaders causes disturbance and the compounding effects of both invasion and management on biodiversity merit rigorous assessment. We explored the impacts of both plant invasion and management disturbance in coastal dune communities of Australia invaded by the introduced shrub bitou bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp. rotundata). We compared the effects of intensive, manually based invader control with those of extensive control (mainly herbicide spraying from aircraft) across fore dune communities. We examined one management regime, which was typically intensive, in hind dune communities. Our main aim was to test the prediction that intensive methods would achieve better biodiversity outcomes than extensive approaches in fore dune communities. We found that extensive management created native species complements that diverged from non-invaded sites while intensive management approached non-invaded site conditions. However, intensively managed sites were also richer in other exotic species than extensively managed sites. Thus, while biodiversity outcomes were better under intensive management, the risk profile of such sites was increased by the greater array of exotics that could potentially replace the original invader. The positive effects of management evident on some fore dunes were not found in hind dunes, where managed sites had the highest exotic species richness and similar bitou bush seedling abundance as both non-invaded and bitou-invaded sites. Hind dune managed sites were also compositionally distinct from non-invaded sites. Thus fore and hind dune communities exhibited different responses to bitou management regimes.  相似文献

At least 38 species and several hybrids of exotic fishes have been found in fresh and brackish waters of Florida. Twenty species and five hybrids are at present established in the form of reproducing populations. The ornamental aquarium fish industry has been the major source of these introductions. Several methods of introductions are considered and recommendations presented toward preventing repetitions in the future. Future dispersal of exotics by channelization projects should become part of environmental impact statements.  相似文献

Many studies have shown the effects of aboveground plant species on soil organisms due to differences in litter quality. However, the calcium concentration in soil has received less attention as a controlling factor of soil invertebrate communities, even though it is an essential element for many animals, especially crustaceans. Litter of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantations, which account for 19% of the forested area in Japan, has a higher calcium concentration compared to other taxa such as broad-leaved trees. We predicted that C. japonica plantations affect soil invertebrates by altering calcium availability. We compared soil properties including exchangeable calcium concentration and soil invertebrate communities between C. japonica plantations and natural broad-leaved forests. Exchangeable calcium was significantly higher in soil from cedar plantations than in that from broad-leaved forests. The invertebrate community composition differed between the two forest types and was best explained by the exchangeable calcium concentration. In particular, two major taxa of soil crustaceans (Talitridae and Ligidium japonicum) were found only in cedar plantations. Our results suggest that calcium concentrations in soil are altered in C. japonica plantations and that this affects soil invertebrate communities.  相似文献

In 1990, a monitoring programme was initiated to survey the status of benthic invertebrate communities and fish populations over a wide range of subarctic rivers in northernmost Finnish Lapland (68°15′–70°N). A special emphasis was placed on detecting possible effects of acidification through sulfur emissions from Russian Kola Peninsula. Sampling in 13 rivers within four major river systems covered watercourses from small brooks to large 7th order rivers, and watersheds with different distances from the emission sources. The community structure of zoobenthos and the occurrence of acid-sensitive indicator species were assessed in 90 sampling sites. Sensitive fluvial fish species, including Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), brown trout (Salmo trutta), European minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) and burbot (Lota lota), were monitored by studying their occurrence, abundance and juvenile recruitment. No signs of acid-induced failure in juvenile recruitment were detected in salmonid populations. The occurrence of minnow and burbot covered all the systems studied. In parallell, the structure of benthic communities with relatively high species diversity and wide distribution of a highly acid-sensitive caddisfly indicated no effects of acidification.  相似文献

Organophosphorus insecticides (OPs) are widely used to control crop pests, and can enter aquatic systems draining agriculturalwatersheds. Because OPs are highly toxic to aquatic organisms,monitoring is important, yet difficult due to the low persistenceof many OPs. Cholinesterase (ChE) inhibition can be used to monitor organisms' exposure to OPs and carbamates; however, highvariability in ChE activity may interfere with the ability of theassay to detect OP exposure. Several potential sources of variation in ChE activity, including water temperature, storage of samples, euthanasia method, and fish sex and size, were investigated in bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus). ChE activity did not vary significantly with water temperature in the range 20–31 °C, or following short-term storage ofeuthanized bluegill up to 8 h at 4 and 19 °C or long-term storage of brain homogenates up to 389 d at –198 °C. There was no difference in ChE activity by euthanasia method (spinal cord severing or anesthesia with Finquel®), nor by sex of fish. Mean ChE activity variedinversely with fish total length. Of the variables investigated in this study, only size needs to be restricted in fish collectedfor monitoring of OPs.  相似文献

Total mercury (Hg) concentrations in benthic insects from a 14 years old hydroelectric reservoir (La Grande 2) were 2 to 3 times higher than those from a reference lake and, in some groups, up to 7 times. The difference was even more pronounced for methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations, with a mean of 4 fold and a maximum of 12 fold between systems. The enrichment factors (dw) of insects, relative to the substrate in which they reside was around 3 for total Hg and 6 to 22 for MeHg. On the basis of their diet, we have classified the insects into four different trophic levels: detritivores, grazers, grazers-predators and predators. In insects collected in the reservoirs, the McHg:Hg ratio was 20–25% in dipterans-ephemeropterans (detritivores) and 30–40% in trichopterans (grazers), but 60–85% in heteropterans-coleopterans (grazers-predators) and 95% in odonates (predators). The pattern was similar in the lake with slightly lower values. In both systems, the proportion of MeHg increases in direct relation to our defined trophic levels. Given that insects are an important food source for many fish, our results suggest that they are a strong vector of McHg to these fish in hydroelectric reservoirs. The bioavailability of MeHg to insect larvae appears to depend on the nature and composition of the substrate in which they reside.  相似文献

Mercury is a neurotoxin, its main source in the human organism being fish and seafood. The first level in the marine food web is formed of planktonic and benthic photosynthetic microorganisms, which form a biofilm on the surface of the hard bottom (epilithon) or plants (epiphyton). They are carriers of nutritional as well as toxic substances and pass these on to subsequent levels of the trophic web. Their biomass is often dominated by diatoms. This was the basis for the presented study into Hg accumulation in epilithic, epiphytic and planktonic diatoms, which was carried out in 2012–2013 in the coastal zone of the Puck Lagoon and the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic). In this coastal area, both micro- and macroorganisms develop particularly intensively. The collected results indicate an increase in Hg concentration in the biofilm during the warm season which, with the lengthening of the vegetative period due to global warming in recent years, is of great significance. As a consequence, the annual mercury load entering the trophic web is larger in comparison with a year in which there is a long, cold winter. An important parameter influencing the accumulation of Hg was the function of those organisms from the biofilm-forming communities. In this case, the highest concentrations of Hg were measured in organisms forming high-profile guilds.  相似文献

Semi-quantitative biomass-size distributions (BSD's) along a joint axis of individual size provided an integrated illustration of aquatic communities sampled at different taxonomic and trophic levels. The approach was applied within the Swedish ISELAW-programme (integrated studies of the effects of liming acidified waters) to test the general hypothesis that aquatic communities in limed lakes are not systematically different from communities in comparable non-limed circumneutral lakes. Input data included pelagic phytoplankton and zooplankton, sublittoral/profundal macroinvertebrates, and benthic fish, within twelve Swedish lakes (six limed, two acidic and four circumneutral reference lakes). The four compartments were sampled on different spatial scales, but each designed for between-lakes comparisons. There were no clear-cut differences in overall size distribution between the three categories of lakes. The mean BSD of limed lakes was indeed more similar to the mean BSD of circumneutral lakes than to that of two acidic lakes. Due to high variation within categories, however, acifidication status alone can not be used for reliable prediction of BSD in a certain lake.  相似文献

Ecologists increasingly recognise the importance of spatial scale for conservation. This study focuses on threatened temporary wetland crustaceans, the fairy shrimp Branchinecta orientalis Sars (Anostraca) and the tadpole shrimp Triops cancriformis Bosc (Notostraca). Using redundancy analyses with a canonical variance partitioning approach, we studied how local habitat conditions and landscape features influence their densities at 4 spatial scales (100 m buffer strip around ponds, 1 km, 5 km and 10 km catchment scales). Branchinecta densities were negatively related with local conditions (trophic status) at all scales. Landscape effects (catchment:wetland size ratio) were only significant at the 10 km scale. However, trophic state conditions were influenced by local contamination rather than landscape conditions. Local degradation tended to be more pronounced in wetlands situated in catchments with a higher cover of natural vegetation compared to those in agricultural catchments. Triops was less influenced by local effects at all scales. The importance of landscape effects increased with landscape scale but effects were only significant at the 10 km scale, and were negatively explained by irrigated croplands. The importance of broad landscape scales and the difficulty to restore locally degraded sites challenges management. Because rationalisation of large-scale agricultural practises can conflict with socioeconomic demands, a first step to the conservation of actual Branchiopoda populations in this remnant wetland complex could benefit from the creation of vegetated buffer strips around the wetlands and/or hedgerows around agricultural fields to counteract atmosphere-mediated flux of particles and solutes from croplands to wetlands at broad landscape scales.  相似文献

We investigated long term changes in an amphibian community in the Languedoc area of Southern France by comparing results of a survey of 56 ponds made in the early 1970s with results of a survey of the same localities in 2001. Based on the frequency of new occurrences and disappearances of species in the sample ponds, there is no sign of a general decline of amphibians in this area. Most species showed non-significant variation in frequency of occurrence or had increased. “Green frogs” (Rana perezi/ridibunda/kl. grafi) showed clear signs of decline, but this is a local phenomenon rather than a decline at the regional scale. Pelodytes punctatus probably declined also, possibly due to its sensitivity to fish introduction. The species richness in the ponds has also remained stable except in ponds where fish have been introduced. The only adverse impact of human activities that we could detect was thus the introduction of fish, which had a significantly adverse effect on amphibian species richness.  相似文献

The effects of sewage pollution on the distribution and abundance of some orgnanisms over a period of 4 mo at the Ahmadu Bello University Main Campus sewage treatment plant and Kubanni river were studied. Physico-chemical parameters such as dissolved oxygen; temperature; hydrogen ion concentration (pH); electrical conductivity and chemical oxygen demand influenced by pollution were measured with respect to the population of aquatic organisms. The organisms were used as biological indices to monitor the ecological imbalance caused by the effluent. The variations in concentrations of some heavy metals were also measured. The studies revealed that at the source of pollution there were no organisms except for some insect larva such as Eristalis, Psychoda, and some microscopic algae like Oscillatoria, Anaebaena, and Polysystis. A location (site 5) on Kubanni river just before the confluence of the sewage effluent and the river was taken as the control. There was a wide variety of organisms (crustaceans, rotifers, and fish) at the control point.  相似文献

Sediments from 18 different road runoff detention systems, located on the Swedish West Coast, were assessed for their ecological hazard potential. Thirteen of the sites were detention ponds, three were manholes within the same sedimentation construction, and two were detention basins handling wash water from road tunnels. Sediments from all sites were analysed for a range of physico-chemical parameters and contaminants, and screened for acute toxicity using Hyalella azteca (sediment), Daphnia magna (elutriate), and Ceriodaphnia dubia (elutriate) as the test organisms, and for chronic toxicity using C. dubia as the test organism. The benthic fauna of the thirteen detention ponds was also studied. Sediment quality guidelines probable effect levels were exceeded for one or several contaminants at half of the sites, and one third revealed toxicity in some of the bioassays. Most of the detention ponds were dominated by tolerant taxa indicating low biological quality. Relationships between contaminant concentrations, toxicity in bioassays, and benthic fauna were, however, found to be weak. Extractable organic Zn, which was used as a tire wear marker, correlated with Zn, Cu, presumably from brake linings, and W, a common component of tire studs. The highest concentration, which was found in the manholes (14 mg kg?1 ds), corresponds to a tire wear concentration of 11 g kg?1 ds. The results of the present study have shown that traffic related contaminants accumulate in the studied runoff treatment systems, and, therefore, the maintenance of them is crucial in order to prevent contamination of surrounding waters.  相似文献

 As part of an integrated pest management project to study the role blue-green algae (BGA) may play in the food web of rice-field ecosystems, 14C-labelled filamentous and monocellular BGA were used as food for fish, zooplankton and benthic fauna in artificial rice fields in the form of three aquaria. 14C present in the organisms was then traced by liquid scintillation to follow the manner in which the labelled BGA were consumed by different organisms. In this study the grazing rate of fish (mud carp) was compared to that of benthic organisms and zooplankton. It was found that fish consumed the BGA at the fastest rates and in the largest amounts, followed by the benthic species and zooplankton. It was also found that filamentous BGA were consumed in higher amounts than monocellular BGA. The importance of grazing in nutrient recycling is emphasized. Received: 22 December 1997  相似文献

In a series of community food webs from native and agricultural soils, we modeled energetics and stability, and evaluated the role of the various groups of organisms and their interactions in energy flow and community stability. Species were aggregated into functional groups based on their trophic position in the food webs. Energy flow rates among the groups were calculated by a model using observations on population sizes, death rates, specific feeding preferences and energy conversion efficiencies. From the energetic organization of the communities we derived the strengths of the mutual effects among the populations. These interaction strengths were found to be patterned in a way that is important to community stability. The patterning consisted of the simultaneous occurrence of strong top down effects at lower trophic levels and strong bottom up effects at higher trophic levels. These patterns resulted directly from the empirical data we used to parameterize the model, as we found no stabilizing patterns with random but plausible parameter values. Also, the impact of each individual interaction on community stability was established. This analysis showed that some interactions had a relatively strong impact on stability, whereas other interactions had only a small impact. These impacts on stability were neither correlated with energy flow nor with interaction strength. Comparison of the seven food webs showed that these impacts were sometimes connected to particular groups of organisms involved in the interaction, but sometimes they were not, which might be due to different trophic positions in the food webs. We argue that future research should be directed to answer the question which energetic properties of the organisms form the basis of the patterning of the interaction strengths, as this would improve our understanding of the interrelationships between energetics, community stability, and hence the maintenance of biological diversity.  相似文献

Invasive plants are, simply by occupying a large amount of space in invaded habitats, expected to impose a significant impact on the native vegetation and their associated food webs. However, little is known about the impact of invasive plants both on native vegetation and on different invertebrate feeding guilds at the habitat level. Yet, studies addressing multiple trophic levels, e.g. plant species, herbivores, predators and detrivores, are likely to yield additional insight into how and under which conditions invasive weeds alter ecosystem structures and processes. We set out to assess whether plant species richness and invertebrate assemblages in European riparian habitats invaded by exotic knotweeds (Fallopia spp.) differed from those found in native grassland- or bush-dominated riparian habitats, which are both potentially threatened by knotweed invasion. Our findings suggest that riparian habitats invaded by knotweeds support lower numbers of plant species and lower overall abundance and morphospecies richness of invertebrates, compared to native grassland-dominated and bush-dominated habitats. Total invertebrate abundance and morphospecies richness in Fallopia-invaded riparian habitats were correlated with native plant species richness, suggesting that there is a link between the replacement of native plant species by exotic Fallopia species and the reduction in overall invertebrate abundance and morphospecies richness. Moreover, biomass of invertebrates sampled in grassland and bush-dominated habitats was almost twice as high as that in Fallopia-invaded habitats. Large-scale invasion by exotic Fallopia species is therefore likely to seriously affect biodiversity and reduce the quality of riparian ecosystems for amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals whose diets are largely composed of arthropods.  相似文献

This study focused on examining the impacts of cattle grazing on belowground communities and soil processes in humid grasslands. Multiple components in the soil communities were examined in heavily grazed and ungrazed areas of unimproved and improved bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) pastures in south-central Florida. By using small (1-m×1-m) sampling plots, we were able to detect critical differences in nematode communities, microbial biomass, and mineralized C and N, resulting from the patchy grazing pattern of cattle. Soil samples were collected on three occasions between June 2002 and June 2003. Microbial C and N were greater (P?0.01) in grazed than in ungrazed plots on all sampling dates. Effects of grazing varied among nematode genera. Most genera of colonizer bacterivores were decreased (P?0.10) by grazing, but more persistent bacterivores such as Euteratocephalus and Prismatolaimus were increased, as were omnivores and predators. Higher numbers of persisters indicated that grazing resulted in a more structured nematode community. Some herbivores, particularly Criconematidae, were decreased by grazing. Abundance of omnivores, predators, and especially fungivores were strongly associated with C mineralization potential. Strong correlation of microbial C and N with nematode canonical variables composed of five trophic groups illustrates important links between nematode community structure and soil microbial resources. Including the analysis of nematode trophic groups with soil microbial responses reveals detection of grazing impact deeper into the hierarchy of the decomposition process in soil, and illustrates the complexity of responses to grazing in the soil foodweb. Although highly sensitive to grazing impacts, small-scale sampling could not be used to generalize the overall impact of cattle grazing in large-scale pastures, which might be determined by the intensity and grazing patterns of various stocking densities at the whole pasture level.  相似文献
