A pot experiment was conducted to appraise the inhibitory effects of salt stress on biochemical attributes in the three mungbean cultivars (NCM-209, NCM-89 and NM-92). Salt stress caused a significant decrease in plant height, shoot relative water contents, photosynthetic pigments, endogenous levels of K+ and K+/Na+ ratios and increase in cellular levels of H2O2, MDA, Na+ and Cl?. However, cv. NCM-209 was found to be tolerant in terms of lower salt-induced decline in K+, K+/Na+ ratio and photosynthetic pigments. The endogenous levels of H2O2 and MDA were also lower in cv. NCM-209. Salt stress markedly also affected different yield attributes in all mungbean cultivars. Again cultivar NCM-209 exhibited less inhibitory effects of salt stress on different growth attributes. Salt stress resulted in a marked increase in the activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase) in mungbean cultivars. Activity of peroxidase was maximal in cv. NCM-209 and catalase activity was maximal in cv. NCM-89, whereas cvs. NCM-89 and NM-92 showed higher activities of superoxide dismutase. Similarly activity of ascorbate peroxidase was higher in cv. NM-92. It could be inferred from data of antioxidant enzymes that mungbean cultivars cannot be categorized as salt tolerant or sensitive on the basis of a single antioxidant enzyme.  相似文献

Abstract

Ion‐specific initial salt effects due to supply of extreme K+, Na+, Cl or SO4 2‐ combinations were studied on the carbohydrate pattern as well as on the activity of amylases, phosphorylase and invertase of two soybean varieties, Jackson and the more tolerant Lee.

Reducing sugars were little affected. Salinity increased leaf sucrose more in Jackson than in Lee, and more due to Cl? than to SO4 2‐ supply. Salinity increased the higher level of root sucrose in Lee less than the lower sucrose level in Jackson, independent of the nature of salination. Salinity increased leaf starch more in Jackson than in Lee. KCl increased leaf starch of Jackson most, Na2SO4. least. KCl increased leaf starch of Lee more than NaCl, while K2SO4 and Na2SO4 tended to decrease leaf starch. Only KCl stimulated amylases and phosphorylase in leaves of Jackson. Salinity changed amylases according to the starch content in leaves of Lee, while phosphorylase decreased independent of the ion combination supplied. Salinity decreased invertase in leaves of Jackson, it affected invertase in Lee only little.

It is suggested that the carbohydrate metabolism dependent and independent of ionic regulation contribute to physiological salt tolerance mechanisms of soybean varieties.  相似文献

Batis maritima is a promising halophyte for sand‐dune stabilization and saline‐soil reclamation. This species has also applications in herbal medicine and as an oilseed crop. Here, we address the plant response to salinity reaching up to two‐fold seawater concentration (0–1000 mM NaCl), with a particular emphasis on growth, water status, mineral nutrition, proline content, and photosystem II integrity. Plant biomass production was maximal at 200 mM NaCl, and the plants survived even when challenged with 1000 mM NaCl. Plant water status was not impaired by the high accumulation of sodium in shoots, suggesting that Na+ compartmentalization efficiently took place in vacuoles. Concentrations of Mg2+ and K+ in shoots were markedly lower in salt‐treated plants, while that of Ca2+ was less affected. Soluble‐sugar and chlorophyll concentrations were hardly affected by salinity, whereas proline concentration increased significantly in shoots of salt‐treated plants. Maximum quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm), quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII), and electron‐transport rate (ETR) were maximal at 200–300 mM NaCl. Both nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) and photochemical quenching (qP) were salt‐independent. Interestingly, transferring the plants previously challenged with supraoptimal salinities (400–1000 mM NaCl) to the optimal salinity (200 mM NaCl) substantially restored their growth activity. Altogether, our results indicate that B. maritima is an obligate halophyte, requiring high salt concentrations for optimal growth, and surviving long‐term extreme salinity. Such a performance could be ascribed to the plant capability to use sodium for osmotic adjustment, selective absorption of K+ over Na+ in concomitance with the stability of PSII functioning, and the absence of photosynthetic pigment degradation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Salinity is among the most widespread and prevalent problems in irrigated agriculture. Many members of the family Chenopodiaceae are classified as salt tolerant. One member of this family, which is of increasing interest, is quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) which is able to grow on poorer soils. Salinity sensitivity studies of quinoa were conducted in the greenhouse on the cultivar, “Andean Hybrid” to determine if quinoa had useful mechanisms for salt tolerant studies. For salt treatment we used a salinity composition that would occur in a typical soil in the San Joaquin Valley of California using drainage waters for irrigation. Salinity treatments (ECi ) ranging from 3, 7, 11, to 19?dS?m?1 were achieved by adding MgSO4, Na2SO4, NaCl, and CaCl2 to the base nutrient solution. These salts were added incrementally over a four-day period to avoid osmotic shock to the seedlings. The base nutrient solution without added salt served as the non-saline control solution (3?dS?m?1). Solution pH was uncontrolled and ranged from 7.7 to 8.0. For comparative purposes, we also examined Yecora Rojo, a semi-dwarf wheat, Triticum aestivum L. With respect to salinity effects on growth in quinoa, we found no significant reduction in plant height or fresh weight until the electrical conductivity exceeded 11?dS?m?1. The growth was characteristic of a halophyte with a significant increase in leaf area at 11?dS?m?1 as compared with 3?dS?m?1 controls. As to wheat, plant fresh and dry weight, canopy height, and leaf area did not differ between controls (3?dS?m?1) and plants grown at 7?dS?m?1. Beyond this threshold, however, plant growth declined. While both quinoa and wheat exhibited increasing Na+ accumulation with increasing salinity levels, the percentage increase was greater in wheat. Examination of ion ratios indicated that K+:Na+ ratio decreased with increasing salinity in both species. The decrease was more dramatic in wheat. A similar observation was also made with respect to the Ca2+:Na+ ratios. However, a difference between the two species was found with respect to changes in the level of K+ in the plant. In quinoa, leaf K+ levels measured at 19?dS?m?1 had decreased by only 7% compared with controls. Stem K+ levels were not significantly affected. In wheat, shoot K+ levels had decreased by almost 40% at 19?dS?m?1. Correlated with these findings, we measured no change in the K+:Na+ selectivity with increasing salinity in quinoa leaves and only a small increase in stems. In wheat however, K+:Na+ selectivity at 3?dS?m?1 was much higher than in quinoa and decreased significantly across the four salinity levels tested. A similar situation was also noted with Ca2+:Na+ selectivity. We concluded that the greater salt tolerance found in quinoa relative to wheat may be due to a variety of mechanisms.  相似文献

Bacillus thuringensis (Bt) transgenic (insect-resistant) cotton cultivars senesce prematurely under potassium (K+) deficiency, more often than conventional cultivars, in the North China Plain. To verify if Bt-transgenic cotton was more susceptible to K+ deficit, two transgenic cultivars, ‘CCRI 41’ and ‘DP 99B’, and two conventional cultivars, ‘CCRI 35’ and ‘CCRI 36’, selected from widely used cultivars in China, were used in a seedling hydroponic study. The culture solution K+ concentration was 0.5 mM for high K+ and 0.02 mM for low K+ conditions. Seedlings of all four cultivars accumulated more dry matter and K+ when grown at high K+ than low K+ conditions. However, under low K+ condition, the dry weight and K+ content of Bt-transgenic cultivars CCRI 41 and DP 99B were lower than those of the conventional cultivars CCRI 36 and CCRI 35. The results indicated that Bt-transgenic cultivars CCRI 41 and DP 99B were more sensitive to K+ deficiency than conventional cultivars CCRI 36 and CCRI 35, which could be the reason for premature senescence symptoms observed from fields of Bt-transgenic cotton under K+ deficiency. Seedlings of all four cultivars had a higher K+ use efficiency (KUE) under low K+ than high K+ conditions, but the KUE did not account for the differential responses between Bt-transgenic and conventional cultivars at the low K+ concentration. The K+ depletion results did not reveal the mechanism for the above differential responses in Vmax and Km of the seedlings either. Further experiments with more cultivars are needed to clarify the differential mechanisms in these genotypes.  相似文献

Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) is a salinity-tolerant turfgrass that has good use potential in the saline-alkali lands of warm regions. However, the systematic Na+ and K+ regulation mechanisms under salinity stress remain unclear at the whole plant level. Two bermudagrass cultivars differing in salinity tolerance were exposed to 0, 50, 100, 200, or 300 mM NaCl in a hydroponic system. Growth, absorption, transportation, and secretion of Na+ and K+, and gas exchange parameters were determined in both cultivars. K+ contents were decreased and Na+ contents and Na+/K+ ratios were increased in both bermudagrasses with increased salinity; however, lower Na+ content and Na+/K+ ratio and more stable K+ content were found in the leaves of the salinity-tolerant ‘Yangjiang’ than the salinity-sensitive ‘Nanjing’. Higher Na+ contents in root cortical cells were found than in the stele cells of ‘Yangjiang’, but the opposite was observed in ‘Nanjing’. Lower Na+ contents and higher K+ contents were found in vessels for ‘Yangjiang’ than for ‘Nanjing’. Salinity stress increased the selective transport of K+ over Na+ from roots to leaves and the Na+-selective secretion via salt glands, which were stronger in ‘Yangjiang’ than ‘Nanjing’. Net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance decreased in the two bermudagrasses with increased salinity; however, they were more stable in ‘Yangjiang’. The results suggested that bermudagrass could reduce Na+ accumulation and maintain K+ stability in leaves under salinity stress by restricting Na+ into vessels in roots, selectively transporting K+ over Na+ from roots to leaves, selectively secreting Na+ via leaf salt glands, and maintaining suitable stomatal conductance.  相似文献

Olive (Olea europaea L cv. Leccino and cv. Frantoio) plants grown in aeroponic cultivation system were supplied with Hoagland solutions containing 0 and 150 mM NaCl for 4 weeks. Sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl), and potassium (K+) concentration was measued on 15‐day‐old leaves and K+/Na+ selectivity ratio was calculated. Plant water relations were estimated on the same leaves by measuring leaf bulk water and osmotic potentials, and by calculating leaf turgor pressure. Root and leaf tissues were also analysed for lipid composition, estimating free sterol (FS), glycolipid (GL) and phospholipd (PL) content. The salt‐sensitive Leccino accumulated more Na+ and Cl in the leaves and showed a lower K+/Na+ selectivity ratio than the salt‐tolerant Frantoio. The FS/PL ratio and the content of GL (namely mono‐galactosyldiglyceride, MGDG) in the roots were related to the salt accumulation in the shoot. Salinity‐induced changes on root lipids were more important in Frantoio than in Leccino, indicating the specific role of the roots in salt exclusion mechanisms. Conversely the effect of salinity on leaf lipid composition was more important in the leaves of the salt‐sensitive Leccino.  相似文献

The effects of salinity on four faba bean (Vicia faba L) cultivars [Giza 429, Giza 843, Misr 1 (Orobanche-tolerant), and Giza 3 (Orobanche-susceptible)] and soil properties were investigated in a pot experiment with addition of 0, 50, and 100 mM sodium chloride (NaCl) for 9 weeks. Salinity significantly decreased calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), potassium (K+), bicarbonate (HCO3 ?), and sulfate (SO4 2?) while significantly increasing sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl?), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC; dS m?1). Root length density (cm cm?3), root mass density (mg cm?3), total dry weight, and salt-tolerance indexes were significantly reduced as a result of application of salinity. The results presented support evidence on the positive relationship between Orobance tolerance and salt tolerance in the three cultivars (Giza 429, Giza 843, and Misr 1). This adaptation was mainly due to a high degree of accumulation of inorganic nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ and lesser quantities of Na+ and Cl?, as well as greater K+/Na+ and Ca2+/Na+ ratios.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of water and salt stress in Quinoa plants (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.). Irrigation treatments using saline solutions of 0 (control), 50(T1), 200(T2), 400(T3), 600(T4), and 800(T5) mM sodium chloride (NaCl) were adopted. The results indicated that quinoa plants can tolerate water stress (50%FC) when irrigated with moderately saline water (T1 and T2, respectively). Salinity stress increases quinoa drought tolerance in terms of biomass production. Neither osmotic stress nor ions deficiency/toxicity seems to be determinant under T1 and 100%FC. Salinity induced a significant increase of sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl?), while reduced magnesium (Mg2+) and calcium (Ca2+) in stems, leaves, seed’s coating, and seeds. The potassium (K+)/Na+ ratio never fell below 1 with T1; yet, fell to 0.78 and 0.89 with T2 for 100% and 50%FC, respectively. The seed coat limited the passage of possibly toxic concentrations of Na+ and Cl? to seed interior, as high Na+ and Cl? was found in the seed coat.  相似文献

Salinity can affect germination of seeds either by creating osmotic potentials that prevent water uptake or by toxic effects of specific ions. This work was carried out to evaluate the germination of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seeds under increasing salinity by using the most abundant salts in China. Potassium (K+), sodium (Na+), and calcium (Ca2+) contents in hypocotyls were determined on the fifth day. At same concentration of salt solution, the adverse effect of ions is in the following sequence: carbonate radical (CO3 2?) > sulfate radical (SO4 2?), chloride (Cl?) > bicarbonate radical (HCO3 ?), magnesium (Mg2+) > Ca2+, and Na+ > K+. The effect of salinity on the germination phase of development is mainly due to its osmotic component other than the ion toxicity. Calcium decreased as increasing of the concentration of salt solutions, and cannot act as the role of enhancing cell division and membrane permeability.  相似文献

An experiment with factorial arrangement of treatments on a randomized complete block (RCB) design basis with three replications was conducted in a greenhouse during Spring 2010 to investigate changes in sodium ion (Na+), potassium ion (K+), Na+/K+ and to determine proline, protein content, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) of four wheat and four barley cultivars. Three salt levels {1, control (no salt), 7, and 13 dS m?1 [2.5 and 5 g salt [sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) in 1:1 ratio] per kg of soil, respectively]} were used in this investigation. Salt stress treatments were applied 4 weeks after planting (at 2 leaf stage). Leaf samples were taken four weeks after imposition of salt treatment. The results showed that salinity caused an increased in proline and protein content, and SOD in all wheat and barley cultivars. The highest proline and protein content of barley and wheat cultivars at all salinity levels were observed in ‘Nimrooz’ and ‘Bam’ cultivars, respectively. At all salinity levels, wheat and barley cultivars ‘Kavir’ and ‘Nimrooz’, respectively, had the lowest Na+ content. Barley cultivar ‘Kavir’ and wheat cultivar ‘Bam’ had higher K+ and K+:Na+ ratios. This might be related to salt tolerance in these two cultivars. Wheat and barley cultivars showed differences with regard to proline, protein, and SOD content, Na+, K+, and K+:Na+ ratio, indicating existence of genetic diversity among the cultivars. These findings indicated that higher K+, K+:Na+ ratio, proline, protein, and SOD content could be the key factors, which offer advantage to barley over wheat for superior performance under saline conditions.  相似文献

The relationships between salinity and mineral nutrition are extremely complex and may change depending on many factors in soil-plant system. We investigated the contribution of silicon (Si at 50 mg kg?1 soil) and potassium (K at 40 and 60 mg K2O kg?1 soil) to improve salt tolerance in sunflower grown with 100 mM sodium chloride (NaCl). The experimental design was factorial based on a completely randomized design with five replications. Added NaCl increased sodium ion (Na+) accumulation by 966 percent in shoots and 1200 percent in roots but reduced shoot potassium ion (K+) concentration by 49 percent, root K+ 51 percent, and shoot K+/Na+ ratio 95 percent. However, Si and K application effectively reduced Na+ accumulation and increased K+ concentration and K+:Na+ ratio, with a significant improvement in plant growth and yield. Among all treatments, greater alleviative effects of Si and K were observed for 50 mg Si + 60 mg K2O kg?1 soil, which decreased shoot Na+ concentration by 67 percent, root Na+ 18 percent, and shoot Na+/root Na+ ratio 60 percent and increased shoot K+ by 198 percent, shoot K+/Na+ ratio 812 percent, membrane stability index (MSI) 35 percent, relative water content (RWC) 26 percent, and seed weight head?1 86 percent compared to salt-stressed plants without supplemental Si and K. Most of the plant growth parameters were negatively correlated with Na+ accumulation but positively correlated with K+ and K+/Na+ ratio. This study suggests that Si and K mediated reduction in Na+ accumulation, and increase in K+ concentration, K+/Na+ ratio, RWC, and MSI are the main factors contributing to improved adaptation capability of sunflower to NaCl stress.  相似文献

为揭示不同白榆(Ulmus pumila L.)品系对滨海盐碱地土壤盐分的改良作用及盐分离子在土壤-白榆系统中的分布与吸收特征,筛选适宜在滨海盐碱地造林的耐盐白榆品系,以中度盐渍化生境下4年生的6种白榆品系(1,5,28,30,46,105号)为试验材料,采用野外取样与室内测试相结合的方法,研究了Na+、K+、Ca2+、Mg2+等盐离子在土壤及白榆品系各器官(根、茎、叶)中的分布特征。结果表明:(1)白榆可降低滨海盐碱地土壤中盐离子及全盐含量,不同白榆品系较对照的土壤全盐含量降低了55.0%~63.1%,30号白榆降幅最大。(2)不同白榆品系将Na+、K+、Ca2+、Mg2+优先积累到叶中,且叶中维持较高的K+/Na+、Ca2+/Na+、Mg2+/Na+比值,不同白榆品系通过建立新的离子平衡以适应盐胁迫环境。(3)不同白榆品系的离子吸收选择性系数均为SK,NaSCa,NaSMg,Na,其对K+的吸收选择性大于对Ca2+、Mg2+吸收选择性;种内差异导致不同白榆品系对Na+、K+、Ca2+、Mg2+吸收选择能力不同,28号白榆根系对K+的吸收性最强,5号白榆根系对Ca2+、Mg2+的吸收性最强。  相似文献

The effects of NaCl salt (EC = 16 dS m−1) on water potential, and accumulation of proline, Na+ and K+ in leaves on the main stem of 30 wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) at awn appearance and 20 days after anthesis (20 DAA) were evaluated in a greenhouse experiment. Plants were arranged in a according to a randomized complete block design with factorial treatments in three replications. Proline accumulation at 20 DAA increased with increasing salt stress. This increase was 27.4-fold with the salt-sensitive cultivar “Ghods,” while the mean was 5.2-fold for 19 salt-resistant cultivars. Positive correlations between proline, and K+ + Na+ concentrations associated with higher sensitivity to salt stress indicated that proline may not have a protecting role against salt stress. No correlation was observed between leaf proline and water potential. Almost no contribution to the osmotic adjustment seems to be made by proline. The contribution made by proline to the osmotic adjustment of plants at 20 DAA was 0.69 bar, whereas that made by K+ and Na+ was 2.11 and 4.48 bar, respectively. The 30 wheat CVs used in this experiment showed different performances regarding the traits observed. Eleven of them showing the higher stress sensitivity indices had the highest level of proline and Na+ concentrations. They were considered to be salt-sensitive cultivars. Among the others, nine cultivars showed salt tolerance with almost the same Na+ and proline concentrations, but a higher K+/Na+ selectivity of ions from leaf to grains. In 10 of the cultivars, Na+ and proline concentrations were low, indicating the presence of a salt avoiding mechanism.  相似文献

This study aimed at investigating mechanisms of salt tolerance and ionic relations of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars with different nitrogen (N) sources. Two resistant genotypes, ILC‐205 and ILC‐1919, were subjected to four levels of salinity (0.5, 3.0, 6.0, and 9.0 dS m‐1). Nitrogen sources consisted of inoculation with two resistant Rhizobium strains, CP‐29 and CP‐32, mineral N additions, and no N application. Data was collected on root and shoot contents of sodium (Na+) chlorine, (Cl,) and potassium (K+), and shoot to root Na+ratio, as well as shoot K+ to Na+ ratio. Salinity affected shoot Na+ and Clcontents, but nodulating plants had higher shoot Na+ contents than plants supplied with mineral N. Shoot to root Na+ ratios were lower in the mineral N treatment than in nodulating treatments at 3.0 dS m‐1, indicating that root compartmentalization and shoot exclusion were only possible at low salinities. Potassium levels of nodulating plant shoots were lower than those of non‐nodulating plants only at low salinities. N‐source significantly affected shoot K+/Na+ ratio, with nodulating plants having lower ratios than non‐nodulating plants, indicating that rhizobial infection or nodule formation may lead to salt entry curtailing the selective ability of chickpea roots.  相似文献

本文以天然型黑色和黄色藜麦品种为试验材料,研究了盐碱度对两藜麦品种生长、抗氧化系统和无机渗透调节离子的影响,解析了不同藜麦品种对盐碱胁迫的耐受能力。结果表明:盐碱胁迫促进了两藜麦品种根系的生长,但明显抑制了茎叶生长,抑制程度:黑色藜麦品种黄色藜麦品种。高浓度处理下,黄色藜麦品种过氧化氢酶(CAT)活性急剧升高,且不同处理下总抗氧化能力(T-AOC)均高于黑色藜麦,表明黄色藜麦品种具有更强的清除活性氧能力。盐碱处理前后离子选择吸收参数K~+/Na~+有明显差异,处理前黑色藜麦K~+/Na~+高于黄色藜麦,处理后K~+/Na~+差异逐渐缩小;在高浓度处理下,黄色藜麦K~+/Na~+显著高于黑色藜麦。由此可见,黄色藜麦耐盐碱能力强于黑色藜麦品种,更适合在滨海盐碱地种植。  相似文献

【目的】土壤盐碱化是制约农作物产量的主要因素之一,盐胁迫影响养分运输和分布,造成植物营养失衡,导致作物发育迟缓,植株矮小,严重威胁着我国的粮食生产。在必需营养元素中,氮素是需求量最大的元素,NO-3和NH+4是植物吸收氮素的两种离子形态。植物对盐胁迫的响应受到不同形态氮素的调控,研究不同形态氮素营养下植物的耐盐机制对提高植物耐盐性及产量具有重要的意义。【方法】本文以喜硝植物油菜(Brassica napus L.)和喜铵植物水稻(Oryza sativa L.)为试验材料,采用室内营养液培养方法,研究了NO-3和NH+4对Na Cl胁迫下油菜及水稻苗期生长状况、对Na+运输和积累的影响,以对照与盐胁迫植株生物量之差与Na+积累量之差的比值,评估Na+对植株的伤害程度。【结果】1)在非盐胁迫条件下,硝态氮营养显著促进油菜和水稻根系的生长;盐胁迫条件下,油菜和水稻生物量均显著受到抑制,Na Cl对供应铵态氮营养植株的抑制更为显著。2)盐胁迫条件下,两种供氮形态下,油菜和水稻植株Na+含量均显著增加,硝态氮营养油菜叶柄Na+显著高于铵态氮营养,叶柄Na+含量/叶片Na+含量大于铵营养油菜,硝态氮营养水稻根系Na+含量显著低于铵营养,地上部则相反。3)铵营养油菜和水稻Na+伤害度显著高于硝营养植株。4)盐胁迫条件下,硝态氮营养油菜地上部和水稻根系K+含量均显著高于铵态氮营养。5)盐胁迫条件下,硝营养油菜和水稻木质部Na+浓度,韧皮部Na+和K+浓度及水稻木质部K+浓度均高于铵营养植株。【结论】与铵营养相比,硝营养油菜和水稻具有更好的耐盐性。硝态氮处理油菜叶柄Na+显著高于铵态氮处理,能够截留Na+向叶片运输。同时,供应硝态氮营养更有利于油菜和水稻吸收K+,有助于维持植物体内离子平衡。盐胁迫下,硝营养油菜和水稻木质部Na+浓度,韧皮部Na+和K+浓度及水稻木质部K+浓度均高于铵营养植株,表明硝态氮营养油菜和水稻木质部-韧皮部对离子有较好的调控能力,是其耐盐性高于铵营养的原因之一。  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) plants in the early stage of development were treated with 80 mM sodium chloride (NaCl) with or without supplemental calcium (Ca2+) (8.75 mM) for a seven day period. The effects of salinity on dry matter production and shoot and root concentrations of sodium (Na+), Ca2+, and potassium (K+) were measured for seven Pioneer maize cultivars. Salinity significantly reduced total dry weight, leaf area, and shoot and root dry weight below control levels. For all seven cultivars, Na+concentrations were reduced and leaf area was significantly increased by supplementing salinized nutrient solutions with 8.75 mM calcium chloride (CaCl2). The two cultivars with the lowest shoot and root Na+ concentrations under NaCl‐salinity showed the greatest increases in total, shoot and root dry weights with the addition of supplemental Ca. Shoot fresh weight/dry weight ratios for all cultivars were decreased significantly by both salinity treatments, but supplemental Ca2+ increased the ratio relative to salinity treatments without supplemental Ca. Root fresh weight/dry weight ratios were decreased only by salinity treatments with supplemental Ca. With NaCl‐salinity, cultivars which had lower shoot and root Na+ concentrations were found to be more salt sensitive and had significantly lower amounts of dry matter production than those cultivars which had higher shoot and root Na+ concentrations. It was concluded that Na+ exclusion from the shoot was not correlated with and was an unreliable indicator of salt tolerance for maize.  相似文献

About 7% of the total land around the globe is salt‐affected causing a great loss to agriculture. Salt stress refers to the excessive amount of soluble salts in the root zone which induce osmotic stress and ion toxicity in the growing plant. Among toxic ions, sodium (Na+) has the most adverse effects on plant growth by its detrimental influence on plant metabolism in inhibiting enzyme activities. An optimal potassium (K+) : Na+ ratio is vital to activate enzymatic reactions in the cytoplasm necessary for maintenance of plant growth and yield development. Although most soils have adequate amounts of K+, in many soils available K+ has become insufficient because of large amounts of K+ removal by high‐yielding crops. This problem is exacerbated under sodic or saline‐sodic soil conditions as a consequence of K+‐Na+ antagonism. Here K+ uptake by plants is severely affected by the presence of Na+ in the nutrient medium. Due to its similar physicochemical properties, Na+ competes with K+ in plant uptake specifically through high‐affinity potassium transporters (HKTs) and nonselective cation channels (NSCCs). Membrane depolarization caused by Na+ makes it difficult for K+ to be taken up by K+ inward‐rectifying channels (KIRs) and increases K+ leakage from the cell by activating potassium outward‐rectifying channels (KORs). Minimizing Na+ uptake and preventing K+ losses from the cell may help to maintain a K+ : Na+ ratio optimum for plant metabolism in the cytoplasm under salt‐stress conditions. It would seem a reasonable assumption therefore that an increase in the concentration of K+ in salt‐affected soils may support enhanced K+ uptake and reduce Na+ influx via HKTs and NCCSs. Although very useful information is available regarding K+‐Na+ homeostasis indicating their antagonistic effect in plants, current knowledge in applied research is still inadequate to recommend application of potassium fertilizers to alleviate Na+ stress in plants under sodic and saline‐sodic conditions. Nevertheless some encouraging results regarding alleviation of Na+ stress by potassium fertilization provide the motivation for conducting further studies to improve our understanding and perspectives for potassium fertilization in sodic and saline‐sodic environments.  相似文献
