Background

Mass antimicrobial treatment of foals with small subclinical ultrasonographic pulmonary lesions is empirical practice on many farms with endemic disease caused by Rhodococcus equi.

Hypothesis

Mass antimicrobial treatment of foals with subclinical ultrasonographic pulmonary lesions is unnecessary.

Animals

One hundred and eight foals on a farm endemic for infections caused by R. equi.

Methods

Controlled, randomized, and double‐blinded prospective study. Foals with ultrasonographic evidence of pulmonary abscesses 5.0–10 cm in diameter (n = 108) were randomly allocated in 5 treatment groups: (1) tulathromycin IM; (2) doxycycline monotherapy PO; (3) doxycycline with rifampin PO; (4) azithromycin with rifampin PO, and (5) saline IM as a placebo. Physical examination and thoracic ultrasonography were performed by individuals unaware of treatment group assignment. Foals with evidence of disease progression were removed from the study and treated with azithromycin‐rifampin.

Results

Overall, 22/25 (88%) foals in the placebo group recovered without the need for treatment. The proportion of foals that had evidence of disease progression did not differ significantly between the treatment groups (> .05). Although the median duration of treatment was significantly (< .05) shorter in foals treated with azithromycin‐rifampin (46 days) compared with foals treated with the placebo (73 days), the time frame of ultrasonographic lesion resolution did not differ significantly between the treatment groups.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

The majority of foals with subclinical pulmonary abscesses <10 cm in diameter recover without antimicrobial treatment and treatment of affected foals does not provide a clear benefit over administration of a placebo.  相似文献

Rhodococcus equi infections cause severe pulmonary disease in foals, affecting animal welfare and increasing production costs in horse-breeding farms. Extra-pulmonary disorders (EPD) are relatively common and can occur independently of pulmonary disease; foals with EPD have a more guarded prognosis. The accompanying paper by Shaw et al. (2021) reports the successful diagnosis and medical treatment of a large abdominal abscess caused by R. equi infection. The authors report on the benefits of using gallium maltolate, a semimetal compound with antimicrobial activity, in combination with traditional R. equi infection antimicrobial treatment (combination of a macrolide and rifampicin). Experimental studies are needed to understand further the benefits of this combined therapy, to evaluate the synergistic effects and if it improves the concentration of antimicrobial drugs into infected tissues. The publication of this case report in Equine Veterinary Education is of clinical importance to equine practitioners when diagnosing and treating R. equi infected foals with or without EPD.  相似文献

Pneumonia in foals caused by the bacterium Rhodococcus equi has a worldwide distribution and is a common cause of disease and death for foals. The purpose of this narrative review was to summarise recent developments pertaining to the epidemiology, immune responses, treatment, and prevention of rhodococcal pneumonia of foals. Screening tests have been used to implement earlier detection and treatment of foals with presumed subclinical R. equi pneumonia to reduce mortality and severity of disease. Unfortunately, this practice has been linked to the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant R. equi in North America. Correlates of protective immunity for R. equi infections of foals remain elusive, but recent evidence indicates that innate immune responses are important both for mediating killing and orchestrating adaptive immune responses. A macrolide antimicrobial in combination with rifampin remains the recommended treatment for foals with R. equi pneumonia. Great need exists to identify which antimicrobial combination is most effective for treating foals with R. equi pneumonia and to limit emergence of antimicrobial-resistant strains. In the absence of an effective vaccine against R. equi, passive immunisation remains the only commercially available method for effectively reducing the incidence of R. equi pneumonia. Because passive immunisation is expensive, labour-intensive and carries risks for foals, great need exists to develop alternative approaches for passive and active immunisation.  相似文献

Background

Macrolide‐resistant isolates of Rhodococcus equi are emerging, prompting the search for clinically effective alternative antimicrobials.

Hypothesis

The proportion of foals with ultrasonographic evidence of pneumonia presumed to be caused by R. equi that had a successful outcome when administered gallium maltolate (GaM) PO would not be more than 10% inferior (ie, lower) than that of foals receiving standard treatment.

Animals

Fifty‐four foals with subclinical pulmonary abscesses among 509 foals at 6 breeding farms in Kentucky.

Methods

Controlled, randomized, prospective noninferiority study. Foals with ultrasonographic lesions >1 cm in diameter (n = 54) were randomly allocated to receive per os either clarithromycin combined with rifampin (CLR+R) or GaM, and followed up for 28 days by daily physical inspections and weekly (n = 1 farm) or biweekly (n = 4 farms) thoracic ultrasound examinations by individuals unaware of treatment‐group assignments. Treatment success was defined as resolution of ultrasonographically identified pulmonary abscesses within 28 days of initiating treatment. Noninferiority was defined as a 90% confidence interval for the observed difference in CLR+R minus GaM that was ≤10%.

Results

The proportion of GaM‐treated foals that resolved (70%; 14/20) was similar to that of foals treated with CLR+R (74%; 25/34), but we failed to demonstrate noninferiority for GaM relative to CLR+R; however, GaM was noninferior to CLR+R treatment when results from a noncompliant farm were excluded.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Gallium maltolate is not inferior to macrolides for treating foals with subclinical pneumonia. Use of GaM might reduce pressure for macrolide‐resistance in R. equi.  相似文献

Objective – To describe the clinical presentation, case management, and outcome in 2 foals with Rhodococcus equi infection associated with presumptive severe immune‐mediated hemolytic anemia. Series Summary – Two foals diagnosed with R. equi pneumonia on the basis of tracheal wash cultures, thoracic radiographs, and thoracic ultrasonography were concurrently diagnosed with hemolytic anemia. Both foals required whole blood transfusions, and were treated with the antimicrobial combination of rifampin and a macrolide (eg, clarithromycin, erythromycin, or azithromycin). Dexamethasone was used to prevent further hemolysis in both foals, and to treat acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome in 1 of the foals. Both foals survived, and required prolonged antimicrobial therapy. New or Unique Information Provided – Although extra‐pulmonary disorders are commonly diagnosed in foals infected with R. equi, hemolytic anemia is rarely described. Dexamethasone is considered the treatment of choice for immune‐mediated hemolytic anemia, but may be contra‐indicated in foals with severe bacterial infections. In these foals, a relatively low dose and short duration of dexamethasone was utilized in an attempt to minimize immune suppression, although early discontinuation in 1 foal precipitated a second hemolytic crisis.  相似文献

Of 131 cases of Corynebacterium equi infection in horses submitted for necropsy to the Ontario Veterinary College or Veterinary Laboratory Services, OMAF, Guelph, Ontario from 1958 to 1984, 115 were diagnosed as suppurative pneumonia, and of these 55 had associated ulcerative enterocolitis. Only five animals had intestinal involvement without pulmonary lesions. The remaining 11 cases included arthritis/cellulitis, skin abscesses and submandibular lymphadenitis. While the lung, intestine and associated lymph nodes yielded C. equi most frequently, in 21% of cases C. equi was also cultured from parenchymatous organs (spleen, liver or kidney) or blood. Corynebacterium equi infection accounted for 10% of all foals submitted for postmortem examination and 45% of all foals with pneumonia. Affected foals were one to four months of age. Submissions occurred between the months of May and August with a peak during July. There was a significantly greater prevalence of C. equi infection in Standardbreds when compared with other breeds. Of foals in this study, 36% were from farms which had had other horses succumb to this disease. Of the foals with pulmonary involvement, 21% did not have fever or clinical signs referable to the respiratory or gastrointestinal systems, findings which indicated that a large percentage of cases were subclinical.  相似文献

Mass antimicrobial treatment of foals with small ultrasonographic pulmonary lesions is common on farms with endemic disease caused by Rhodococcus equi. The objectives of this study were to compare the relative efficacy of three antimicrobial protocols for the treatment of pulmonary abscesses on a farm with endemic infections caused by R. equi and to determine the frequency of spontaneous resolution of subclinical pulmonary lesions. Foals with ultrasonographic evidence of pulmonary abscesses ≥ 1.0 cm in diameter (n=128) were randomly allocated to one of four equal treatment groups. Animals with respiratory distress or severe pulmonary lesions were excluded from the study. Treatment groups consisted of: (1) tulathromycin intramuscularly; (2) azithromycin monotherapy orally; (3) azithromycin in combination with rifampin orally; and (4) glucose orally as a placebo. Physical examination, thoracic ultrasonography and white blood cell (WBC) counts were performed weekly by individuals unaware of treatment group assignment. Foals that worsened were removed from the study and treated with azithromycin and rifampin. Overall, 14/32 (43.8%) foals in the placebo group recovered without the need for therapy. The proportion of foals that responded to the initial therapy, the duration of therapy, the kinetics of ultrasonographic lesion resolution, the proportion of foals that had to be removed from the study and the number of days to removal from the study did not differ significantly between treatment groups. The study showed that many foals with pulmonary abscesses recover without antimicrobial therapy. Moreover, treatment of sub-clinically affected foals with antimicrobial agents did not significantly hasten recovery.  相似文献

This report describes the diagnosis and successful treatment of multiple extrapulmonary sequelae of Rhodococcus equi (R. equi) pneumonia in a 3‐month‐old filly. Bilateral uveitis and hyphaema, haemolytic anaemia and polysynovitis developed in this foal and were likely due to immune‐mediated mechanisms. The challenges associated with diagnosis and treatments of these extrapulmonary disorders are discussed. The filly was treated initially with clarithromycin and rifampin; however, a blood transfusion and immunosuppressive therapy with dexamethasone were required due to progressive haemolysis and for treatment of uveitis and polysynovitis. Bilateral hyphaema was successfully treated with intracameral injections of a recombinant tissue plasminogen activator. The development of antimicrobial resistance in R. equi was an additional challenge encountered in the management of this case and emphasises the importance of culture and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing of isolates from foals with R. equi pneumonia. Extrapulmonary disorders associated with R. equi pneumonia are likely underdiagnosed and associated with a poor prognosis. This case highlights the importance of thorough and ongoing diagnostic assessment of foals with R. equi pneumonia and demonstrates that a successful outcome can be achieved with appropriate and directed treatment.  相似文献

Reasons for performing the study: Disease caused by Rhodococcus equi is a significant burden to the horse breeding industry worldwide. Early detection of rhodococcal pneumonia, albeit important to minimise treatment costs, is difficult because of the insidious nature of the disease and the lack of definitive diagnostic tests. Objectives: To investigate air sampling from the breathing zone of neonatal foals as a predictor of subsequent rhodococcal pneumonia. Methods: Air samples were collected from the breathing zone of 53 neonatal foals (age ≤10 days) and again at the time of routine ultrasonographic screening for R. equi pneumonia (age 1–2 months). Results: Pneumonia was diagnosed ultrasonographically in 23% of foals. Virulent R. equi was detected in air from the breathing zone of 19% of neonatal foals and 45% of foals at age 1–2 months. There was no association between virulent R. equi in the breathing zone of foals and the subsequent ultrasonographic diagnosis of rhodococcal pneumonia. The median concentration of virulent R. equi in the breathing zone of both neonates (0 [range 0–4] colony‐forming units [cfu]/250 l) and older foals (0 [range 0–3] cfu/250 l) was not significantly different from that in background air samples (0 [range 0–6] cfu/250 l). There was no difference in the concentration of virulent R. equi in the breathing zone of older foals that were diagnosed with rhodococcal pneumonia or clinically normal foals. Conclusion: Detection of virulent R. equi in air from the breathing zone was not a positive predictor of rhodococcal pneumonia in foals up to age ≤2 months. Potential relevance: Selective culture of air samples from the breathing zone of young foals is not better at diagnosing rhodococcal pneumonia than early ultrasonographic screening. However, culture of air samples from the breathing zone of older foals remains a useful herd‐based epidemiological tool.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the serum and pulmonary disposition of telithromycin in foals and to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of telithromycin against macrolide‐susceptible and macrolide‐resistant Rhodococcus equi isolates. A single dose of telithromycin (15 mg/kg of body weight) was administered to six healthy 6–10‐week‐old foals by the intragastric route. Activity of telithromycin was measured in serum, pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF), and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells using a microbiological assay. The broth macrodilution method was used to determine the MIC of telithromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin and erythromycin against R. equi. Following intragastric administration, mean ± SD time to peak serum telithromycin activity (Tmax) was 1.75 ± 0.76 h, maximum serum activity (Cmax) was 1.43 ± 0.37 μg/mL, and terminal half‐life (t½) was 3.81 ± 0.40 h. Telithromycin activity, 4 h postadministration was significantly higher in BAL cells (50.9 ± 14.5 μg/mL) than in PELF (5.07 ± 2.64 μg/mL), and plasma (0.84 ± 0.25 μg/mL). The MIC90 of telithromycin for macrolide‐resistant R. equi isolates (8 μg/mL) was significantly higher than that of macrolide‐susceptible isolates (0.25 μg/mL). The MIC of telithromycin for macrolide‐resistant isolates (MIC50 = 4.0 μg/mL) was significantly lower than that of clarithromycin (MIC50 = 24.0 μg/mL), azithromycin (MIC50 =256 μg/mL) and erythromycin (MIC50 = 24 μg/mL).  相似文献

Rhodococcus equi is an opportunistic, intracellular saprophyte that causes severe pyogranulomatous pneumonia in foals. The bacterium displays in vitro susceptibility to many antibiotics. The highest efficacy against R. equi in vitro and in vivo is achieved by using a combination of rifampicin and macrolide antibiotics. Recent years have seen an upward trend in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of rifampicin and erythromycin, suggesting increasing resistance of R. equi to these antibiotics. The aim of the study was to determine the antimicrobial activity of 24 selected antibiotics against R. equi strains isolated from dead foals and from the environment of horse breeding farms with and without endemic R. equi infections. Minimum inhibitory concentration gradient strips were used to determine the lowest concentration of the antibiotic that inhibited the growth of R. equi. Based on normal MIC distribution, an epidemiologic cutoff values (ECOFF) were assessed for particular antibiotics and R. equi strains. The results were compared with ECOFFs for S. aureus, according to the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing data. The data indicate that the lowest MIC values were obtained for clarithromycin, rifampicin, imipenem, and vancomycin. The majority of R. equi strains can be classified as wild type in relation to the majority of antibiotics. A small percentage of strains presented non-WT (NWT) with the exception of SXT, for which 35% of strains were classified as NWT. The lack of interpretative criteria for R. equi creates a real problem in the assessment of antibiotic sensitivity both for clinical and scientific purposes.  相似文献

Rhodococcus equi pneumonia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal foals. Much effort has been made to identify preventative measures and new treatments for R. equi with limited success. With a growing focus in the medical community on understanding the genetic basis of disease susceptibility, investigators have begun to evaluate the interaction of the genetics of the foal with R. equi. This review describes past efforts to understand the genetic basis underlying R. equi susceptibility and tolerance. It also highlights the genetic technology available to study horses and describes the use of this technology in investigating R. equi. This review provides readers with a foundational understanding of candidate gene approaches, single nucleotide polymorphism‐based, and copy number variant‐based genome‐wide association studies, and next generation sequencing (both DNA and RNA).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the previously identified B‐cell epitope TSLNLQKDEPNGRASDTAGQ of the VapA protein of Rhodococcus equi and its association with R. equi pneumonia. A modified peptide designated PN11‐14 corresponding to the epitope was recognized by all sera from experimentally infected foals with virulent R. equi ATCC103+ containing the virulence plasmid but not by its plasmid‐cured derivative ATCC103? strain. Marked levels of VapA‐specific immunoglobulin (Ig)G were detected in all sera from the ATCC103+ infected foals at 2 weeks after the infection. One control animal had high titres as determined by the peptide enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indicating the ELISA may not absolutely differentiate between foals with R. equi pneumonia and healthy exposed foals in farms where the prevalence of disease is high. However, numbers of animals used were small. Further evaluation of the peptide ELISA with field samples is necessary to determine whether the assay is diagnostically useful. This study showed that levels of passive transfer of maternal IgG antibodies to the epitope in newborn foals could be measured. Interestingly, the maternally derived antibodies were found to significantly (P < 0.05 by Student's t‐test) decline 2 weeks after birth. Seroconversion against naturally occurring VapA expressing R. equi could be detected in some foals at 4 weeks of age. Antibodies to the epitope peaked and were significantly (P < 0.05) greater in foals aged between 6 and 8 weeks. These results indicated that the peptide ELISA could be used to monitor anti‐VapA antibodies in foals, particularly those at the age of 4–6 weeks. It is possible that the ELISA may be of some use as a diagnostic test on farms where R. equi is non‐endemic. Further studies using large number of field samples are needed to verify this assumption.  相似文献

Early diagnosis and prevention of Rhodococcus equi pneumonia in foals represent important goals for equine clinicians. Recent protocols for diagnosis and treatment of Rhodococcosis in foals typically rely on a multimodal approach based on sonographic evidence suggestive of pyogranulomas, sonographic abscess scores and laboratory findings including plasma fibrinogen concentrations, blood biochemistry testing and platelet and leukocyte counts. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of weekly testing of serum amyloid A (SAA) and plasma fibrinogen concentrations in foals to achieve early diagnosis of R. equi pneumonia prior to the onset of clinical signs. This testing was used to simulate a clinically practical screening procedure and compared with thoracic ultrasonography performed in parallel.The present study suggests that SAA does not represent a reliable early marker of Rhodococcosis when plasma concentrations are tested weekly. However, when clinical signs of R. equi pneumonia are present, SAA concentrations may allow clinicians to obtain ‘real-time’ indications concerning both the progress of infection and the effectiveness of therapy. This study raises the possibility that plasma fibrinogen monitoring starting at 1 week of age and repeated on a weekly basis, could serve as a screening test allowing clinicians to identify foals as suspected of R. equi infection. Future investigations regarding both physiological plasma fibrinogen concentrations in foals as well as fibrinogen kinetics in foals affected with R. equi pneumonia, including the establishment of appropriate reference intervals for the test method employed in this study, will be necessary in order to clarify this possibility.  相似文献

Background

Gamithromycin is active in vitro against the bacterial agents most commonly associated with bronchopneumonia in older foals. However, the clinical efficacy and safety of this drug have not been investigated.

Hypothesis

Gamithromycin is effective for the treatment of bronchopneumonia in foals.

Animals

One hundred and twenty‐one foals on a farm endemic for infections caused by Rhodococcus equi.

Methods

In a controlled, randomized, and double blinded clinical trial, foals with ultrasonographic evidence of pulmonary abscesses (abscess score 8.0–20 cm) were randomly allocated in 3 treatment groups: (1) gamithromycin IM q7 days (n = 40); (2) azithromycin with rifampin, PO q24h (n = 40); or (3) no antimicrobial treatment (controls; n = 41). Physical examination and thoracic ultrasonography were performed by individuals unaware of treatment group assignment. Foals that worsened were removed from the study.

Results

The proportion of foals that recovered without the need to be removed from the study was significantly higher for foals treated with gamithromycin (38 of 40) or azithromycin with rifampin (39 of 40) than for controls (32 of 41). Treatment with gamithromycin or with azithromycin‐rifampin resulted in a significantly faster decrease in the clinical score and abscess score compared to the controls. Adverse reactions characterized by colic (n = 18) and hind limb lameness (n = 14) were observed only in foals treated with gamithromycin.

Conclusion and Clinical Importance

Gamithromycin was noninferior to azithromycin with rifampin for the treatment of bronchopneumonia in the study population but had a higher frequency of adverse reactions.  相似文献

Rhodococcus equi is a significant cause of pneumonia, resulting in disease and sometimes death of foals. It is believed that infection occurs by inhalation of dust contaminated with virulent R equi. Although association between the airborne concentration of virulent R equi and the incidence of foal pneumonia at breeding farms has been documented, studies at the level of individual foals have not been reported. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine whether the magnitude of airborne virulent R equi was significantly associated with risk of R equi pneumonia for individual foals. The concentration of virulent R equi was significantly (P < .001) greater in stalls than paddocks among samples collected from 47 foals at a breeding farm in central Kentucky. The presence of airborne virulent R equi in stalls was significantly (P = .045) more likely at 7 days of age for foals subsequently found to be affected by rhodococcal pneumonia. Additionally, airborne concentrations of virulent R equi in stalls were significantly greater at 7 and 14 days of age than at birth. Presence of the mare and foal at the time of sampling was significantly (P < .001) associated with increased airborne concentrations of virulent R equi in stalls. These findings suggest that environments containing airborne virulent R equi during the first week of life may influence the risk of subsequent disease for a foal.  相似文献

Hematologic parameters of 23 foals were studied at weeks 0, 2, 4, 6, and 10 following the onset of a strangles epizootic. The epizootic was initiated by group exposure to a foal experimentaUy infected with S, equi. The group consisted of 12 foals previously exposed to an S. equi epizootic 6 months prior, and 11 previously unexposed foals. Seventeen percent of the previously exposed foals and 91% of the unexposed foals developed clinical signs of strangles. Significant increases in mean white blood cell count, neutrophil cell count, fibrinogen concentration, and plasma protein concentration were seen in strangles cases, compared to foals not classified as cases, and were associated with clinical signs. Decreases in packed cell volume, hemoglobin concentration, and red blood cell count, although statistically insignificant, were observed in strangles cases compared to noncases during weeks 4, 6, and 10 and may have biological significance. Similar, but more pronounced, changes were observed in the hematologic parameters of the foal experimentally inoculated with S. equi. The effect of Streptococcus equi infection on the hematology of foals should be considered in their convalescent care.  相似文献

Four month-old foals were infected orally with 75 mL of a suspension of 5.0 × 108 Corynebacterium equi per mL. Two foals were killed after ten days and had scanty number of C. equi in the caeco-colic lymph nodes. No C. equi were recovered from the other two foals, killed 20 days after infection. No gross pathological change was detected in these four foals, although mild microscopic lesions were seen in the ileum of one foal. Results of lymphocyte blastogenesis using peripheral blood lymphocytes and C. equi antigens showed, however, that lymphocytes became sensitized to C. equi following this challenge.

In a second experiment four month-old foals were given orally the same dose of organisms but on five consecutive days. Two foals were killed ten days after infection and showed mild histological changes in the large bowel mucosa and C. equi could be recovered from all intestinal lymph nodes cultured. In one of these foals moderate numbers of C. equi were present in the bronchial lymph node. Of the other two foals, one died after 22 days with severe ulcerative enterocolitis and intestinal lymphadenitis. Only one small pulmonary abscess was detected despite large numbers of C. equi in the lungs. The other foal developed similar intestinal changes and was euthanized 25 days after infection. No C. equi were detected in the lungs or bronchial lymph node. Lymphocyte blastogenesis in these animals showed a rapid rise in response to C. equi antigens.

These studies suggest that C. equi pneumonia in foals does not always arise from an intestinal infection, that minor intestinal infection causes a cellular immune response and that massive exposure of the bowel over a sustained period is necessary to induce intestinal lesions.

Rhodococcus equi (R equi) pneumonia is an important cause of disease and death in foals. Feces from mares can contain R equi, including virulent R equi, and thus may act as a source of the bacteria at horse breeding farms. A previous report documented that every mare at a farm in central Kentucky shed virulent R equi in at least one of four fecal samples collected serially during the periparturient period. The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which this high prevalence of fecal shedding could be replicated at other horse breeding farms. The frequency of detection of R equi and virulent R equi in fecal samples was studied among 131 mares from 24 farms in central Kentucky. The proportions of fecal samples from mares containing R equi and virulent R equi were 95% and 76%, respectively. These findings indicate that R equi and virulent R equi may be isolated with high frequency from feces of mares at breeding farms in central Kentucky, and that mares are a source of virulent R equi for the environment of their foals.  相似文献

A 4-month-old Thoroughbred filly presented with pyrexia, inappetence and diarrhoea. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a multilobulated abdominal mass that was determined to be associated with the caecum using computed tomography. Computed tomography also identified mesenteric lymphadenopathy and a pulmonary mass in the left caudal lung lobe. Percutaneous aspiration of the abdominal mass yielded pure growth of Rhodococcus equi. The filly responded in a positive fashion to the administration of clarithromycin, rifampin and gallium maltolate. Follow-up computed tomography revealed complete resolution of the abdominal mass and lymphadenopathy. Extrapulmonary disorders associated with R. equi should be considered even when thoracic ultrasonography reveals no evidence of pulmonary pathology. Although intra-abdominal abscesses have a grave prognosis, successful treatment is possible. Gallium maltolate can be safely administered to foals and may improve patient outcomes.  相似文献
