Body weight, heart rate, and 19 M-mode echocardiographic variables were measured in 41 nonanesthetized healthy cats. Estimated limits were determined for the echocardiographic variables, and each variable was then correlated to body weight, heart rate, and the 18 other variables. A significant (P less than 0.05) positive correlation to body weight was found with aortic diameter, left atrial dimension, septal and left ventricular systolic and left ventricular diastolic wall thicknesses, and left and right ventricular diastolic and right ventricular systolic internal dimensions. Significant inverse correlation (P less than 0.05) to heart rate was found with body weight, left ventricular systolic and diastolic and right ventricular systolic internal dimensions, left atrial dimension, left atrial dimension to aortic ratio, mitral valve E point to ventricular septal separation, and left ventricular ejection time. Left ventricular shortening fraction in the short axis and velocity of circumferential fiber shortening were significantly correlated (P less than 0.05) to heart rate. Significant correlation (P less than 0.05) was also found between many echocardiographic variables.  相似文献

The heart of 12 adult llamas, one female and 11 males, 2-7 years of age, was studied gross-anatomically (absolute and relative heart weight) and microscopic-anatomically (left and right ventricular wall, left auricle). Comparing the 9 younger animals (2-3 years old) with the 3 older llamas (5-7 years old) a significant increase of the absolute heart weight and of the number of capillaries per mm2 and a significant decrease of the intercapillary distance in the left ventricular wall was found. This results in an increase of capillarity in the studied heart regions (5.5% compared to 6.9%). The simultaneous increase of the capillary-to-myocyte-ratios from 0.9 to 1.1 shows a significant correlation to the cross-sectional area of the myocytes (r = 0.79) and an also significant but negative correlation to the number of myocytes per mm2 (r = -0.82). In both groups the cross-sectional area of the myocytes and their diameter differs significantly in the three regions of the heart (left ventricular wall--214 micron 2 resp. 17.5 microns; right ventricular wall--156 micron 2 resp. 15.5 microns; left auricle--96 micron 2 resp. 11.5 microns). It is to be supposed, that the morphological conditions of the cardiac vascular supply of llamas living in an altitude of 4000 m are improving with age.  相似文献

An M-mode echocardiographic examination was performed in a consistent manner in 30 clinically healthy cats under light ketamine hydrochloride sedation. There was a significant linear relationship between increasing body size and increasing cardiac dimensions for several echocardiographic values. Positive correlation existed between body weight and body surface area with aortic root, left ventricular caudal wall thickness (LVCW), interventricular septal thickness (IVS), IVS/LVCW, and mean velocity of circumferential fiber shortening (Vcf); there was a negative correlation between body weight and body surface area with left ventricular ejection time (LVET). Body surface area also correlated positively with percentage of ventricular minor axis dimensional change (% delta D). Positive correlations were recorded between left ventricular end-diastolic dimension (LVEDD) and left ventricular endsystolic dimension (LVESD), LVESD and LVET, LVCW and IVS, LVET (calculated by LVCW motion) and LVET (calculated by aortic valve motion), % delta D and Vcf, heart rate and Vcf, and Vcf (calculated using aortic valve motion to compute LVET) and Vcf (using LVCW motion to compute LVET). There were negative correlations between LVEDD and % delta D, LVEDD and Vcf, LVESD and Vcf, LVET and Vcf, LVET and heart rate, LVET and % delta D. Significant differences were recorded between means of echocardiographic reference values generated in this and other studies, except for LVESD.  相似文献

Objectives : To assess the influence of body surface area, age and gender on echocardiographic parameters and to establish echocardiographic reference values for dogue de Bordeaux dogs. Methods : Thirty‐nine healthy dogue de Bordeaux dogs of both sexes, older than one year, were recruited and 31 of these were included in the study. The classic linear regression model proved to be the best way to analyse the data. The reference limits of the echocardiographic measurements were calculated using the regression equations. The difference between the mean values of body surface area in both gender groups was evaluated by using one‐way ANOVA. Results : A significant correlation was seen between several echocardiographic parameters and body surface area or body surface area and age, and high coefficients of determination (R2) were found. No effect of gender was detected on echocardiographic variables, except for the thickness of the left ventricular posterior wall at end diastole. Clinical Significance : The echocardiographic parameters related to body surface area, in the absence of correlation with other independent variables (gender and age) should be interpreted with caution because their variation could be significant for the presence of heart disease. The proposed statistical model allows estimation of echocardiographic parameters in dogue de Bordeaux dogs with different body surface areas and ages.  相似文献

A significant (P less than 0.0001) positive correlation was demonstrated between left ventricular internal chamber dimension in diastole or systole and body weight, body surface area, cycle length, and the square root of cycle length. On the basis of adjusted coefficients of determination, multiple regression analysis, using body weight or body surface area and cycle length or the square root of cycle length, was superior to separate simple regression with these variables in accounting for variations in left ventricular internal chamber dimensions. Shortening fraction had a significant (P less than 0.0001) negative correlation and left ventricular free wall measurements had a significant (P less than 0.0001) positive correlation to body weight and body surface area. For these echocardiographic variables, correlation to the square root of cycle length was insignificant (P greater than 0.05), and a multiple regression model was not helpful in developing confidence intervals. Septal wall measurements were not correlated with body weight, body surface area, cycle length, or the square root of cycle length.  相似文献

QUANTITATIVE CROSS-SECTIONAL ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY IN THE NORMAL DOG   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Two-dimensional echocardiography was performed on 18 unanesthetized, normal dogs (4.5 to 30 kg). Measurements of wall thickness, intracavitary dimensions, and cross-sectional area of the left atrium, left ventricle, and aorta were made. Satisfactory data were obtained from 17 dogs, and were used to determine normal values. Normal data were tested for significant correlation to body weight (kg) by linear regression. Repeatability was studied in six dogs examined, on three separate occasions, during a 5-day period. Differences between values obtained on different days were evaluated by analysis of variance.
Satisfactory qualitative echocardiograms were repeatedly obtained by using consistent sites of transducer placement and by identifying internal cardiac structures. These tomographic planes were highly reproducible, with only ventricular length, and some views of the ventricular septum, showing statistically significant (P < 0.05) differences. Almost all linear and area measurements were significantly correlated to body size, while most indices of left ventricular function were independent of body weight. Dimensions obtained from the left and right parasternal position were nearly identical. Cross-sectional echocardiography allows repeatable assessment of cardiac anatomy, and it should prove useful for identification and quantitation of heart disease in the dog.  相似文献

The effects of chronic severe anemia on weights and chamber volumes of hearts were studied in 9 spontaneously anemic neonatal pigs (mean hematocrit = 10.1%) and 10 healthy piglets (mean hematocrit = 28.3%) of approximately the same age and similar body weights. All cardiac chamber weights, as well as total heart weight/body weight ratios, were significantly higher in the anemic pigs than in the healthy pigs (P less than 0.001). The left ventricular free wall/right ventricular free wall weight ratio was identical in the 2 groups. Calculated left ventricular volume/body weight ratio also was significantly greater in the anemic pigs (P less than 0.05). It is concluded that cardiac dilatation and hypertrophy occur consistently in chronically anemic neonatal pigs. These changes are independent of age or body weight of the animal.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of age, body weight (BW), heart rate (HR), sex, and left ventricular shortening fraction (LVSF) on transmitral and pulmonary venous flow in clinically normal dogs. ANIMALS: 92 client-owned dogs 3 months to 19 years old. PROCEDURE: Transthoracic Doppler echocardiography recordings of transmitral flow and pulmonary venous flow were obtained in conscious unsedated dogs. Influence of age, BW, HR, sex, and LVSF on diastolic variables was assessed, using statistical methods such as ANOVA on ranks and univariate and multivariate forward stepwise linear regression analyses. RESULTS: Age significantly influenced isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT, r = 0.56), ratio between peak velocity of the early diastolic mitral flow wave-to-peak velocity of late diastolic mitral flow wave (E:A; r = -0.44), deceleration time of early diastolic mitral flow (DTE; r = 0.26), and peak velocity of atrial reversal pulmonary venous flow wave (AR-wave; r = 0.37). Significant changes of mitral inflow and pulmonary venous flow variables were evident only in dogs > 6 and > 10 years old, respectively. Body weight significantly influenced DTE (r = 0.63), late diastolic flow duration (r = 0.60), and AR duration (r = 0.47), whereas HR significantly affected DTE (r = -0.34), IVRT (r = -0.33), and peak velocity of AR (r = 0.24). Sex or LVSF (range 22 to 48%) did not influence any echocardiographic variables. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Age, BW, and HR are important factors that affect filling of the left atrium and left ventricle in clinically normal dogs.  相似文献

M-mode echocardiography was used to assess apical mitral annulus motion (MAM) in 103 normal dogs and 101 dogs with cardiac disease, to obtain information on systolic left ventricular long axis function. In normal dogs, a close relationship was found between MAM and body weight (r = 0.80, P < 0.001). There was a weak correlation between MAM and heart rate (r = -0.25, P < 0.05), but no correlation between MAM and age or left ventricular shortening fraction (P > 0.05). Mean MAM (95% confidence intervals) were established for normal dogs of differing body weight, and were 0.70 cm (0.65 to 0.75) in dogs < 15 kg, 1.08 cm (1.03 to 1.13) in dogs weighing 15 to 40 kg, and 1.51 cm (1.21 to 1.81) in dogs > 40 kg. "Cut-off" values to define decreased MAM for normal dogs of differing body weight were 0.45 cm (dogs < 15 kg), 0.80 cm (dogs 15-40 kg), and 1.20 cm (dogs > 40 kg). In dogs with cardiac disease, median MAM was normal in mitral valve endocardiosis or aortic stenosis, but significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in dilated cardiomyopathy. All dogs with mitral valve endocardiosis (n = 54) or aortic stenosis (n = 26) had MAM above the above-mentioned "cut-off" values, suggesting normal or increased left ventricular longitudinal systolic shortening, whereas 81% (17/21) of dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy had MAM below the "cut-off" value, indicating decreased long axis systolic function. It is concluded that MAM may be used to evaluate systolic left ventricular long axis performance in dogs and may add useful information on global left ventricular contraction dynamics.  相似文献

Of 100 Estrela Mountain dogs, 74 were examined to obtain echocardiographic reference values for the breed. The influence of bodyweight, age and sex on different echocardiographic parameters was studied using either analysis of variance or regression analysis. Statistically significant differences were found between sex and heart rate as well as interventricular septal thickness at end-systole and left ventricular internal dimension at end-diastole. A statistically significant linear correlation was also found between several parameters and (1) age (mean arterial pressure, left ventricular internal dimension at end-systole, fractional shortening, circularity index in systole, aortic valve velocity time integral, pulmonic valve velocity time integral and mitral valve E wave peak velocity), (2) weight (left ventricular posterior wall thickness at end-diastole and end-systole, end-diastolic volume index, left atrium diameter, aortic valve peak velocity and mitral valve E wave deceleration time), (3) sex and age (left ventricle end-diastolic volume), and (4) sex and weight (aortic root diameter and pulmonic valve peak velocity). Reference values for the breed are presented, as well as dispersion graphics for selected parameters, based on a regression equation.  相似文献

Two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) was performed on 22 unsedated Thoroughbred and part Thoroughbred horses weighing between 411 and 650 kg to establish normal reference values for 2DE measurements. Animals stood during examinations performed with a 3.5 MHz mechanical sector transducer using various transducer positions and tomographic planes. Right ventricular diameter (RVD), ventricular septal thickness (VSTh), aortic diameter (AoD), area of the chordal lumen of the left ventricle (CTA), left ventricular diameter (LVD) and left atrial diameter (LAD) were determined at ventricular end-diastole (Ed) and/or end-systole (Es). Fractional shortening (FS) of the left ventricle and end-systolic left atrial to aortic ratio (LAD-Es:AoD-Es) also were calculated. Echocardiographic data were related to body weight by linear regression analysis. Intra-observer variability was checked in five horses by measuring each parameter during each of 10 consecutive cardiac cycles. The 2DE data were compared with M-mode values in published reports. In the 18 horses whose weight did not exceed 551 kg, repeatable recordings of good quality were obtained, and 2DE measurements could be made using intra-cardiac reference points. Increasing body weight proved to impose substantial limitations on measurements taken with the available machine and transducer. This problem might be overcome by using probes of lower frequency or equipment with higher quality image display at greater depth. The following parameters correlated significantly to body weight: VSTh-Es (r = 0.69; P less than 0.01). AoD-Es (r = 0.64; P less than 0.01) and CTA-Es (r = 0.84; P less than 0.001).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC INDICES IN THE NORMAL DOG   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Twenty young healthy dogs weighing from 9.8 to 28.6 kg were studied by M-mode echocardiography. Parameters were measured and statistically evaluated to determine whether a correlation to body surface area existed. A statistically significant correlation to body size was found for the aortic, left atrial, left ventricular, septal, and posterior wall dimensions and the mitral valve amplitude of motion. In addition, normal values not correlated to body surface area are presented with their means and standard deviations. These values include velocity of circumferential fiber shortening, ejection time, percent systolic thickening of septum and posterior wall, percent change in minor diameter, selected dimension ratios, and mitral valve velocities  相似文献

A morphometric study of foetal and newborn cardiac growth in the horse   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A morphometric study of hearts in 81 equine foetuses, ranging in age from 190 to 330 days of foetal age, and in 26 newborn foals is reported. The mean weight, external dimensions, ventricular wall thickness and circumference of the atrio-ventricular orifice were measured. Features of the main associated vessels of the heart were also recorded. All cardiac measurements of foetuses increased linearly throughout the latter half of pregnancy and were highly correlated with foetal age. This linear growth pattern was also found in the parameters of the associated arterial trunks. The ratio of the right ventricular weight to the total ventricular weight in the equine foetuses increased gradually from 0.27 (Day 190) to 0.34 (full term), but in newborn foals, this ratio began to decrease soon after birth, declining from 0.32 to 0.28 by 11 days of age. The interventricular septum was thickest followed by the right ventricular wall, and the left ventricular wall was thinnest during the period of gestation studied. The right ventricle was 3.2 per cent to 31.5 per cent thicker than the left ventricle.  相似文献

Ninety nonanesthetized 7- to 16-week-old pigs were studied, using 2-dimensional echocardiography that permits orientation of a targeted M-mode beam perpendicular to structures being studied and allows serial studies of the same cardiac regions. Normative data were obtained and included body weight and measurements of left atrial diameter, mitral valve excursion, aortic root diameter, left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic diameters, and left ventricular fractional shortening. A positive correlation was found between body weight and measurements of left atrial diameter, mitral valve excursion, aortic root diameter, left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic diameters, and fractional shortening. A correlation was found between body weight and age. Best-fit analysis resulted in all measurements fitting either a first- or second-degree polynomial.  相似文献

This study was initiated to determine the accuracy of M-mode echocardiography in measuring left ventricular dimensions and estimating heart weights in horses. Left ventricular free wall and interventricular septal thickness and left ventricular external and internal diameters were measured and heart weights estimated from the echocardiograms of 47 horses. Autopsy measurements of the same parameters were then recorded. Statistical comparison of the data demonstrated: (1) Systolic measurements of wall thickness more closely resembled the heart in death than the diastolic measurements; (2) good correlations existed between parameters measured echocardiographically and at autopsy, especially wall thicknesses and left ventricular external diameter (maximum r = 0.82); (3) heart weight was readily predicted from echocardiographic wall thickness regressions (maximum R-squared = 68 per cent). M-mode echocardiography demonstrated the potential for direct and accurate measurements of cardiac mass and some ventricular dimensions in the horse. The data suggested that intense rigor and exsanguination may render the autopsied heart unsatisfactory for comparative measurements when assessing techniques such as echocardiography.  相似文献

We sought to measure plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) concentrations in normal dogs and to compare them with those measured in dogs with acquired heart disease with or without pulmonary edema. A sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit was validated and used to measure ET-1 immunoreactivity in plasma samples obtained from 32 normal dogs and 46 dogs with either dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM, n = 27) or degenerative valvular disease (CDVD, n = 19) with (n = 30) or without (n = 16) overt congestive heart failure (CHF). Plasma ET-1 concentrations (geometric mean, 95% confidence interval of geometric mean) were 1.17 (1.04-1.32) fmol/mL in the 32 normal control dogs, 1.25 (0.981-1.60) fmol/mL in 16 dogs with DCM (n = 9) or CDVD (n = 7) without CHF, and 2.51 (2.10-3.01) fmol/mL in 30 dogs with DCM (n = 18) and CDVD (n = 12) with CHE Plasma immunoreactivity of ET-1 was significantly higher in dogs with CHF in comparison with normal dogs (P < .001) and dogs with heart disease without CHF (P < .001). No significant difference was found between normal dogs and dogs with heart disease but without CHF (P > .05). Significant correlations were between plasma ET-I concentrations and left atrial:aortic ratio (P < .0001, r2 = .39), left ventricular internal dimension at end-diastole indexed to aortic diameter (P < .0001, r2 = .30) or body surface area (BSA) (P = .0071, r2 = .10), and left ventricular internal dimension at end-systole indexed to aortic diameter (P = .0003, r- = .17) or BSA (P = .0008, r2 = .15).  相似文献

1. B- and M-mode echocardiography was used to compare cardiac function in broilers with spontaneous ascites syndrome with that of normal chickens. 2. Thirty ascitic chickens and 15 normal chickens aged three, 4, 5, and 6 weeks from the same flock (180 birds in total) were examined. They were restrained gently in a natural standing position, and echocardiographs were obtained from a 7.0-MHz linear transducer placed on the left pectoral apterium. Indices of cardiac structure and functioning were calculated from the echocardiographs, and some were normalised to body weight. Heart rate was also measured. 3. All cardiac structural indices in both ascitic and normal chickens increased with age. Compared with normal chickens, right ventricular diameter at the end of systole in ascitic chickens was greater at 4, 5 and 6 weeks of age. Ventricular septal thickness at the end of both systole and diastole was greater in ascitic chickens at 5 and 6 weeks. Left ventricular free wall thickness at the end of diastole was less in ascitic chickens at 3 weeks. However, all the structural indices decreased with age after normalisation with body weight. 4. The heart rate of ascitic chickens was lower at 4, 5 and 6 weeks. Normalised left ventricular fractional shortening was lower in ascitic chickens at 4, 5 and 6 weeks, as was normalised right ventricular fractional shortening. Incrassation of the ventricular septum (Delta T), which changed little in normal chickens, was less at 4, 5 and 6 weeks in ascitic chickens. Left ventricular fractional shortening, right ventricular fractional shortening and Delta T were all negatively correlated with ascites heart index at all ages. 5. Taken together the results suggest heart failure of both ventricle, but that right ventricular dysfunction is more extensive than left ventricular dysfunction. We suggest that secondary pulmonary hypertension would result in these ascitic chickens due to volume overload.  相似文献

In 18 horses, the pulmonary artery wedge pressure and the heart rate were measured during pharmacological stress load. 12 horses were healthy (4 trained, 8 untrained) and 6 horses had a heart disease (3 trained, 3 untrained). Pharmacological stress induction was carried out with the sympathomimetic drug dobutamine at a dosage rate of 7.5 microg/kg/min over 10 minutes of infusion. At the fourth minute, the parasympatholytic drug atropine was administered (5 microg/kg bw), and the heart rate and the pulmonary artery wedge pressure were continuously measured over 26 minutes. During sole dobutamine infusion, a significant decrease in heart rate and a significant increase in pulmonary artery wedge pressure were observed. After the application of atropine in the fourth minute, a significant increase in heart rate (from 35.7 +/- 6 up to 106 +/- 38/ min) and in pulmonary artery wedge pressure (from 15.7 +/- 3 up to 24 +/- 8.6 mmHg) were visible in the group of healthy horses. The horses with heart diseases had a significantly higher increase in both parameters (heart rate and pulmonary artery wedge pressure) with a significantly positive correlation (r = 0.7). The heart rate increased in the horses with heart diseases from 35.2 +/- 2,8 beats/min up to 132 +/- 45.7 beats/min and the pulmonary artery wedge pressure increased from 17.3 +/- 3,2 mmHg up to 32.7 +/- 13 mmHg. The cardiac status (healthy or heart disease) as well as the training level of the horses (untrained or trained) had a significant influence on the heart rate and the pulmonary artery wedge pressure. The untrained horses (healthy and heart disease) showed significantly higher values over a longer period of time than did the trained horses with the same cardiac status. Additionally the influence of pharmacological stress induction on echocardiographic parameters was investigated. The left atrial size (p = 0.015) and left ventricular diameter were significanly different in the systole (p = 0.008) and in the diastole (p = 0.001) between healthy horses and horses with heart diseases. All horses showed a positive correlation between the pulmonary artery wedge pressure and the left atrial size (r = 0.8), as well as between the left ventricular systolic (r = 0.6) and the diastolic diameter (r = 0.6). The correlation between the pulmonary artery wedge pressure and the left atrial size was nearly the same in the healthy horses (r = 0.74) and in the horses with heart diseases (r = 0.76). Regarding the training level, all untrained horses had a significantly higher correlation between the pulmonary artery wedge pressure and the left atrial size (r = 0.87) in comparison to the trained horses (r = 0.74). Particularly in the untrained horses with heart diseases, this correlation was remarcable (r = 0.99).  相似文献

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is an important regulator of fluid homeostasis and vascular tone. We sought to compare N-terminal ANP immunoreactivity (ANP-IR) in plasma from cats with and without hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Secondarily, we evaluated relationships between ANP-IR and echocardiographical variables in cats with HCM and healthy cats. Venous blood samples were obtained from 17 cats with HCM and from 19 healthy cats. Plasma ANP-IR concentration was determined by an enzyme-linked immunoassay. Two cats with HCM had clinical evidence of congestive heart failure; the remainder had subclinical disease. Plasma ANP-IR concentration was higher in cats with HCM (3,808 +/- 1,406 fmol/L, mean +/- SD) than in control cats (3,079 +/- 1,233 fmol/L), but this difference was not statistically significant (P = .11; 95% confidence interval [CI] = -166 to 1,622). There was a significant, but modest correlation between plasma ANP-IR concentration and left ventricular posterior wall thickness (r = 0.42; P = .01). Additionally, plasma ANP-IR concentration was weakly correlated with left atrial size (r = 0.35; P = .03). A linear regression model was developed to further explore these relationships. Atrial size and wall thickness were included in the model; the 2 explanatory variables had an interactive effect on plasma ANP-IR concentration (R2 = 0.27; P = .02). There was no appreciable correlation between plasma ANP-IR concentration and any other echocardiographical variable. In a population that included cats with subclinical disease, those with HCM did not have significantly higher plasma ANP-IR concentration than did healthy cats. An exploratory multivariable regression analysis suggested a linear relationship between ANP-IR concentration and atrial size, wall thickness, and their interaction.  相似文献
