The paper presents basic factors determining eel production in Polish lakes. Analysis of data from 582 lakes over 29 years (1950–1978) showed that ell yield in lakes is basically determined by the artificial stocking of eels. The relationship between eel catch and eel stocking is very close and to a certain extent independent of the fishing effort. Prospects of further development of eel management in Europe are presented, as well as basic problems facing this management on a general scale. A need is identified for further studies in this field.  相似文献

Commercially exploited tench populations in 755 lakes in the Northeastern part of Poland were observed on the basis of the fishing data from 1951 to 1994. The observations were analyzed in five size categories of water reservoirs, whose total area reached over 123,900 ha. The analyses were performed according to the parameter of a commercial fish catch per area unit, taking into consideration the number of months per year when the lakes were exploited. Statistically significant differences were determined in the mean value of the tench catch parameter between the different size categories of lakes. Similar time-related differences were observed. In the lakes >100 ha the relative tench catch gradually declined in the successive time intervals. Tench was the rarest in catches from lakes <50 ha. The complete disappearance of tench from commercial catches occurred first as early as the late 1960s in lakes <200 ha. The largest quantities of tench stocking material were introduced to the lakes from 1951 to 1972. The amount of stocking material per 1 ha of stocked lakes decreased for larger lakes. The average frequency of tench stocking in the analyzed lakes was higher in larger lake size categories. On the other hand, in each lake size group the frequency of stocking was found to have declined along with the average volume of the stocking material in the subsequent 11-year-long periods.  相似文献

Over a period of 34 years (1954–1987), a total of 11.9 million glass eels were stocked all over Austria to improve the yields of commercial fishermen and to make the lakes more attractive for anglers. Nearly half (48%) of the imported glass eels were introduced into natural, previously eel‐free Alpine lakes until stocking ceased in 1988. Twenty‐five years later, their occurrence could be verified in 56% (N = 22) of the Austrian Alpine lakes larger than 50 ha and mean body length had increased to 66 cm. Eels from seven selected Austrian Alpine lakes exhibited a yearly mean increase in length between 0.6 and 1.5 cm, indicating a comparatively poor growth compared with the majority of eel populations from within their natural distribution range. At the same time, high expectations in developing a flourishing eel fishery were not met. In all but one lake, the harvest remained below 3% of the total yearly catch and salmonids remained the dominant target species. During peak harvest in the 1980s, it exceeded 8% in mesotrophic Wallersee (2600 kg). Simulations of stock development indicated that the yield could have been improved, but contrary to earlier expectations eels never became important for local cuisine and catches remained too low for the development of a profitable export business. On the other hand, eels may have contributed to the loss of small‐bodied fish taxa.  相似文献

Commercially exploited tench, Tinca tinca, (L.) populations in 480 lakes in the northeastern Poland were analyzed on the basis of the fishery data from 1949 to 1994. The long-term changes in tench catch were studied in four categories of lakes with respective proportions of littoral zones (<30, 31–60, 61–90 and <90% of total lake area). The analyses were performed with using relative catch (kg ha−1 month−1) of tench. Mean relative catch of tench for 1949–1994 ranged from 0.36 kg ha−1 month−1 in lakes with smallest littoral zone (>30%) to 0.93 kg ha−1 month−1 in lakes with the largest littoral (<90%). Mean relative catch increased with increasing proportions of littoral zones in lakes. However, long-term trends in mean relative catch of tench showed decreasing tendencies in all lakes. The beginning of these tendencies was found about ten years earlier in lakes with smaller littoral (<60%) in comparison to lakes with larger littoral zones (>60%). Mean stocking rates of tench (number of 1-year-old fish per ha of littoral) for 1949–1994 were not significantly different in lakes of studied categories. However, lakes with proportionally less littoral zone had reduced stocking efficiency estimated as number of stocked fish per ha of littoral to require 1 kg ha−1 month−1 of tench.  相似文献

Tremendous variation in survival and growth of percid fry stocked in ponds was addressed through manipulation of amounts and kinds of fertilizers added and stocking densities of fish. Ponds were filled with water from nearby eutrophic lakes less than one week prior to stocking. Survival in these ponds averaged 64%. whereas ponds filled one month before stocking averaged only 14%. Optimal inorganic fertilization was identified as weekly restoration to 600µg N/L (NH4 +NO3) and 30µg P/L as PO4 -3. Organic fertilization gave variable results and water qualities. In one experiment, low organic fertilization alone (28 kg alfalfa meal/ha/week) provided survival and growth comparable to optimal fertilization with inorganic nutrients. Although similar in results, inorganic fertilization was more cost effective than the alfalfa meal. Low fish predation from low stocking or survival allowed Daphnia to overgraze algae. This resulted in a crash in both algae and zooplankton in the ponds. Doubling the initial stocking density increased harvests from 150.000 to 300,000 fish/ha and increased yield from 45 to 100 kg/ha.  相似文献

Abstract– Two almost eel-free lakes (339 and 299 ha respectively) in southeastern Sweden were stocked with French elvers in the autumn of 1980. The introduced eel stocks were monitored from the time of stocking and onwards using outlet traps equipped with fine-meshed screens and subsequently by test-fishing with long-lines and fyke-nets. Up to and including the spring run of 1994, more than 5,900 eels or about 2,600 kg were recaptured from one of the lakes, mostly as migrating silver eels. This means a recapture rate of about 11%. In the other lake most recaptures came from fyke-netting of the yellow eel stock. In this lake only 1.7% have been recaptured up to this point. These differences in yield and recapture rates from the two lakes are discussed in the context of lake productivity, growth rates, sex ratios, sizes of stocked elvers and size at silvering. In cconomic terms, the results from the higher-yielding lake indicate an excellent rate of profit. After approximately 10 years, the investment (cost of the introduced elvers) was paid back at a lending interest rate of 10%.  相似文献

Growth and survival in the primary rearing phase (42 days) for bighead carp, silver carp, bighead × silver carp (BHC × SC), and silver × bighead carp (SC × BHC) in ponds and concrete tanks stocked at 370 500 fry/ha were studied. Mean survival for fishes in ponds was 93%, that in tanks was 73%. Yields among all fishes averaged 338 kg/ha. The growth rates of fishes in ponds were similar; in tanks, silver carp grew faster than the bighead carp.Growth, survival, and harvestability by seine during the secondary rearing phase (60-day duration) for the same groups of fish were studied. Fingerlings (0.9 g mean weight) were stocked in earthen ponds at 49 400 fish/ha and 98 800 fish/ha. Mean survival of fishes at low stocking rate was 77%, similar to that (71%) for the high stocking rate. Fish yields were similar at the low stocking rate. At the high rate, the BHC × SC yield (846 kg/ha) was greater than the SC × BHC yield (582 kg/ha). The BHC × SC and SC × BHC had greater mean weights at low stocking rate than at high stocking rate. The mean weights for bighead carp were similar at both rates. Bighead carp and the reciprocal hybrids were more easily harvested by seine than silver carp.  相似文献

Intensive polyculture of common carp and herbivorous fish (silver carp and grass carp) at high stocking densities and with intensive feeding with fodder and mineral and organic fertilization was carried out without mechanized aeration and automated feeding.Two stocking patterns were tested. The first, in Pond 1 (with an area of 2.5 ha), had the following stocking rates: one-year carp (C1), 8000 fish/ha; one-year silver carp (S1), 1500 fish/ha; and one-year grass carp (G1), 200 fish/ha. The yield was 6292 kg/ha of standard consumer fish (C1+ 743 g, S1+ 944 g, and G1+ 1000 g) at a relatively low food conversion ratio (2.24) and high survival of all fish. Within the total yield, the two-year carp contributed 76%, the silver carp 21%, and the grass carp 3%. The second stocking pattern, in Pond 2 (0.25 ha), had the following rates: C1, 8500 fish/ha; S1, 2000 fish/ha; and G1, 200 fish/ha, and produced a still higher total yield (6629 kg/ha) at a relatively low food conversion ratio (2.10). The two-year carp in Pond 2 contributed 88% of the total yield, and the herbivorous fish only 12% even though they accounted for 20% of the stock.Our results (Pond 2) are compared with other record yield experiments under similar conditions but including tilapia. At a total stocking rate of 10 700 fish/ha and without participation of tilapia, over a period of 186 days (as against 126 days in the other experiment), our experiments gave a total yield which was 347 kg/ha higher at a food coefficient 15% lower. The growth period was 60 days longer in our experiments but it included April and October when water temperature is much below the optimum and only 4% of the total amount of fodder was assimilated.  相似文献

Silver perch fingerlings (mean weight 15.3 g) were stocked at densities of 21 000 and 7000 fish/ha in six 0.1-ha earthen ponds and cultured for 10 months. There were three replicate ponds for each density. Ponds were aerated for at least 11 h a day and water was added every 4 weeks to replace that lost by evaporation and seepage. Fish were fed a formulated diet containing 35% crude protein at 4% body weight per day for the first 4 weeks and at rates up to 3% thereafter. The mean annual production rate of 9819 kg/ha of fish stocked at 21 000/ha was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than the annual rate of 3699 kg/ha of fish stocked at 7000/ha. The maximum daily production and growth rates achieved in any pond over a 1-month period during summer were 97.7 kg/ha and 5.1 g/fish, respectively. Stocking density did not significantly (P > 0.05) affect survival rate (treatment means for 21 000 and 7000 fish/ha: 92.8 and 94.7%), daily growth rate (0.2–3.3 and 0.3–3.4 g/fish), weight at harvest (434.9 and 473.2 g), food conversion ratio (1.9:1 and 1.8:1) and cost of feeding ($A1.55 and $A1.47/kg), suggesting that higher stocking densities and production rates are possible. Water temperatures ranged from 11.1 to 30.0 °C. Significantly (P < 0.05) slower growth during December was associated with concentrations of NH3-N up to 0.65 mg/l. The results demonstrate that silver perch is an excellent species for semi-intensive culture in static earthen ponds with the potential to form the basis of a large industry in Australia, based on high-volume, relatively low-cost production.  相似文献

Reported maximum carrying capacities of Tilapia nilotica reared in cages are Iow ranging from 10 to 70 kg/m3. This may be related to total numbers of caged fish reared in a body of water and not simply density per cage volume. An experiment was conducted to demonstrate such effects.
Sixteen cages in a 0.77 ha pond were stocked with T. nilotica at either 250, 500, 750, or 1,000 fish/cage for a total of 12,987 fish/ha. One cage in each of four 0.13 ha ponds was stocked with either 250 or 1,000 fish/cage for a total of 1,923 or 7,692 fish/hectare, respectively. Fish were fed a 32% protein diet at equal rates for 169 days. In the 0.77 ha pond, yield per cage was positively correlated with stocking density, while individual mean weights were negatively correlated with stocking density. However, among equal densities per cage between ponds, fish in the 0.13 ha ponds gained about 26% more than in the 0.77 ha pond. An interaction of the effects of density per cage volume and per pond area may have occurred.  相似文献

Fingerling channel catfish, "Ictalurus punctatus," were stocked into sixteen, 0.4-ha ponds at 11,120 fish/ha or 19.770 fish/ha. Half the ponds at either density were managed as single-batch cropping systems and half as multiple-batch cropping systems. Each of the four combinations in the 2 X 2 factorial design was replicated in four ponds over a 3-year study period. Ponds were not drained until the study was terminated. Average net fish production (totaled over 3 years) was 23,717 kg/ha for the single-batch, high-density treatment; 19,501 kg/ha for the multiple-batch, high-density treatment; 17,396 kg/ha for the single-batch, low density treatment; and 16,857 kg/ha for the multiple-batch, low- density treatment. Both stocking density and cropping system significatly (P < 0.05) influenced net production. Average size of fish at harvest was significantly (P < 0.05) lower at the high stocking density and in the single-batch cropping system. Feed conversion was better (P < 0.05) at the low stocking density and in the single-batch cropping systems. Poorer feed conversion in multiple-batch systems is believed due to harvest-to-harvest carryover of large fish, which convert feed to flesh less efficiently than small fish. Observed mortality and total fish loss (observed mortality plus fish unaccounted for upon termination of the study) were not affected (P > 0.05) by cropping system but were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in ponds stocked at the high density. Production data were used to assess discounted net revenues from a synthetic 131-ha farm based upon a price of $1.54/kg either for all fish harvested or for fish harvested that were ≥0.35kg. When based on all fish harvested, discounted net revenue was highest for the single-batch, high-density treatment, but the low average size of fish harvested from ponds in that treatment (0.49 kg/fish) would not be acceptable across the industry. The multiple-batch, low-density treatment had the second highest discounted net revenue based upon all fish harvested and the highest revenue when only fish ≥ 0.34 kg were valued. Of the treatments analyzed, this was judged the economic choice for the channel catfish industry.  相似文献

Abstract Lake-to-lake variation in brown trout, Salmo trutta m. lacustris L., yield from stocking was examined in 34 lakes in northern Finland. The trout were mainly stocked as 2–3-year-old fish. Catch statistics were compiled with information on water quality, water level fluctuations, fishing effort and lake geomorphology. Absolute brown trout yields (kgha-1) increased with increasing stocking rate, but there was an indication of non-linearity at higher stocking densities. Relative yields (kg per thousand trout released) were highest at low stocking rates. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to determine the best predictive model for lake-to-lake variability in brown trout yields. Seventeen measured regressands were used initially, and then replaced with scores obtained in a principal component analysis of highly correlated water quality variables and species-specific fish yields. Three major determinants of brown trout yields in these lakes were found in both analyses: fish community, stocking rate and fishing effort. Brown trout yields from stocking were higher in lakes with proportionally high yields of vendace or vendace and whitefish and proportionally low yields of pike.  相似文献

Abstract –  Social interactions impact growth rate of animals in different ways such as direct or indirect competition for food and/or territories. In this study, behaviour of glass eels and elvers was described throughout three trials of 9 days spread out over 3 months. The impact of recruitment season (spring and autumn runs) and glass eels’ propensity to migrate (assessed thanks to an experimental sorting) on individual growth was studied. Overall, spring elvers were more aggressive and active than autumn elvers while autumn fish were more gregarious and reached a higher specific growth rate than spring fish. At the individual level, gregariousness and swimming, respectively, promote and impair growth rate. In addition, skinny individuals and individuals with high motivation to get food achieved better growth rate suggesting catch‐up growth processes. These findings may help in clarifying the complex relations between behaviour, growth, river basin colonisation and future sex (which is environmentally determined in eel) and then contribute to the urgent need of scientific knowledge to guide the stocking programme of this endangered species.  相似文献

Channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus farming is the largest component of aquaculture in the USA. Culture technologies have evolved over time, and little recent work has been conducted on the effects of stocking density on production characteristics and water quality. Twelve 0.1‐ha ponds were stocked with 13‐ to 15‐cm fingerlings (16 g) at either 8600, 17,300, 26,000, or 34,600 fish/ha in single‐batch culture with three replicates per treatment. Fish were fed daily to apparent satiation with a 32% floating commercial catfish feed. Nitrite‐N, nitrate‐N, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand (COD), Secchi disk visibility, chlorophyll a, chloride, total alkalinity, total hardness, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were monitored. Ponds were harvested after a 201‐d culture period (March 26, 2003 to October 13, 2003). Net yield increased significantly (P < 0.05) as stocking density increased, reaching an average of 9026 kg/ha at the highest density. Growth and marketable yield (>0.57 kg) decreased with increasing stocking density. Survival was not significantly different among densities. Mean and maximum daily feeding rates increased with density, but feed conversion ratios did not differ significantly among treatments (overall average of 1.42), despite the fact that at the higher stocking densities, the feeding rates sometimes exceeded 112 kg/ha per d (100 lb/ac per d). Morning DO concentrations fell below 3 mg/L only once in a 34,600 fish/ha pond. Concentrations of chlorophyll a, COD, nitrite‐N, and TAN increased nominally with increasing feed quantities but did not reach levels considered problematic even at the highest stocking densities. Breakeven prices were lowest for the highest stocking density even after accounting for the additional time and growth required for submarketable fish to reach market size. While total costs were higher for the higher density treatments, the relatively higher yields more than compensated for higher costs.  相似文献

Multiple‐batch production is the most widely practiced method of raising channel catfish. Producers are increasingly adopting intensified production practices in multiple‐batch systems by increasing stocking density and aeration rates as a means to improve cost efficiencies. Proven stocking recommendations are required for the efficient implementation of recent developments in multiple‐batch production. Twelve 0.4‐ha ponds were understocked with 17,484, 20,612, and 26,124 fingerlings/ha (mean weight = 40 g/fish) over equal weights of carryover fish (0.46 kg/fish @ 4,589 kg/ha). Fish were fed once daily to apparent satiation with a 28% protein floating feed and aerated with a single 7.4‐kW electric paddlewheel aerator. Density‐dependent significant differences were absent for gross, net, daily net yields, marketable yields (≥0.54 kg), growth (g/day), and survival. Sub‐marketable yield (<0.54 kg) and feeding rate increased significantly with increased understocking density. Economic analysis revealed increased breakeven prices and diminished net returns with increased stocking density when sub‐marketable fish were not considered as revenue. These differences in production costs and profits among the three treatments became minimal when sub‐marketable fish were included as revenue. All three density treatments attained positive annual net cash flows. This study validates channel catfish understocking densities of 17,000–26,000 fish/ha to improve cost efficiency in intensively aerated, multiple‐batch production systems.  相似文献

The paper discusses briefly eel exploitation and traditional methods of catching eel. Attention is drawn to changes taking place in eel exploitation in Polish lakes, and to their causes. Most effective methods of eel catching are reviewed. It is pointed out that utilization of active fishing gear, mainly seine nets and electric aggregates, creates significant possibilities of increasing eel catches. Eel yields up to 40 kg/ha are not unusual with this type of gear. Furthermore, active fishing gear is more effective and can be used also in lakes in which it is difficult to apply traditional eel traps. The latter fact is of special significance in view of the increasing number of lakes stocked with eel, and improvement of eel stocking effectiveness.  相似文献

To quantitatively define relationships among stocking densities, feeding rates, water quality, and production costs for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, grown in multiple‐batch systems, twelve 0.1‐ha earthen ponds were stocked at 8,600, 17,300, 26,000, or 34,600 fingerlings/ha along with 2,268 kg/ha of carryover fish. Fish in all ponds were fed daily to apparent satiation using 32% protein floating feed. Temperature and dissolved oxygen in each pond were monitored twice daily; pH weekly; nitrite‐N, total ammonia nitrogen, and Secchi disk visibility every 2 wk; nitrate‐N, chlorophyll a, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand monthly; and chloride every other month. The costs of producing channel catfish at different stocking densities were estimated. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) as a result of stocking density among treatment means of (1) gross or net yields, (2) mean weights at harvest, and (3) growth or survival of fingerlings (24–36%) and carryover fish (77–94%). Mean and maximum daily feeding rates ranged from 40 to 53 kg/ha/d and 123 to 188 kg/ha/d, respectively, and feed conversion ratios averaged 1.75. There were no differences in any feed‐related parameter as a result of density. Water quality variables showed few differences among densities at samplings and no differences when averaged across the production season. Yield of fingerlings increased as stocking density increased with significant differences between the two highest and the two lowest stocking densities. Breakeven prices were lower at the higher stocking densities as a result of the higher yield of understocked fish and similar mean individual fish weights produced at these higher stocking densities. Overall, varying stocking densities of fingerlings in multiple‐batch systems had little effect on production efficiency and water quality. Additional research on managing the population structure of carryover fish in commercial catfish ponds may be warranted.  相似文献

Sunshine bass from Phase I or pond production were graded into two weight classes, 3 and 5 g, and stocked into experimental earthen ponds at a density of either 8,649/ha or 11,120/ ha in a 2 × 2 factorial design. After stocking, the fish were fed a commercially manufactured feed (43.0-45.5% crude protein) twice daily to satiation for 17 mo. At harvest, mean survival ranged from 67.4 to 84.8% but was highest for the fish stocked at 5g. Average production Tor ponds stocked at 8,649/ha and 11,120/ha, regardless of stocking weight, was 4,506 kg/ha and 5350 kg/ha, respectively. Production and percentages of assigned weight classes were not significantly different among treatments as a result of wide variation among replicates. Using size-dependent market prices assigned to the different harvest size groups, an economic analysis revealed gross receipts, variable costs, and total costs for the 11,120/ha 5-g treatment. Net returns were not significantly different among the four treatments due to large variation among replicates per treatment. These results confirm that the traditional phase II of pond production can be eliminated in favor of a direct stocking of phase I fish into a single production phase and economically competes very well with traditional three-phase growout management. The potential reduction in turnover time of production units achieved through the direct stock practice is an efficiency trait that should translate into significantly higher returns and a greater profit over the long term. Further reduction of stocking density combined with a stocking weight greater than 5 g should translate into greater proportion of larger, higher valued fish at harvest and a growout period of 18-20 mo, rather than the 24-30 mo traditionally needed for the combined phase II and phase III of production.  相似文献

Some problems of eel fishing in hypersaline coastal lagoons are examined by an analysis of eel catches in Porto Pino, three connected basins of about 441 ha in southern Sardinia, where the average catch of eels, about 19 Kg/ha/year, is roughly half the total catch and over 65% of the gross economic return from these ponds.The parameters of the eel population dynamics and the exploitation rate were estimated from the number and weight of eels in each of three trade-weight categories, into which the catch is divided each day as requested by the market, and from examination of random samples, from each stratum, for age and sex. In the particular case of Porto Pino ponds, the estimated yield of 12 g per recruit seems to indicate that the stock of eels is under-fished.The catch is not proportional to the intensity of effort, but depends on environmental conditions, such as lunar phase and presence of wind and/or bad weather conditions. The catch could be increased by using a larger number of winged fyke nets, but should not be sought by extending the fishing period, because that might harm the juveniles of other commercially exploitable species. It is suggested that yield optimisation could be achieved by concentrating the maximum effort in the period of silver eel migration (October–February). In the Mediterranean area, these months are characterized both by suitable environmental conditions and by a peak in the demand for the product.  相似文献

Abstract. The efficiency of stocking with whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus L., fingerlings was assessed in a large lake system with a naturally reproducing local whitefish stock. After the start of the stocking programme, the whitetish catch increased. The proportion of stocked whitefish in the catch was ca. 50%. The calculated yield per thousand released fingerlings was 57 ± 18kg. Further, the efficiency of stocking may be indicated by the following facts. Prior to stocking, the whitefish catch decreased, evidently due to recruitment overfishing. It was suggested that this situation was corrected by stocking with fingerlings and the whitefish catch then increased. The catch per unit of effort (CPUE) generally decreases with increasing fishing effort, but in this case the CPUE remained at the same level in spite of a considerable increase in fishing effort. The growth rate depends on the density of the fish stock. In this case the growth rate declined, possibly due to the fact that fingerling stocking increased the population density.  相似文献
