Previous studies have indicated that under hydroponic conditions, spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) plants produce higher grain yields, more tillers, and increased dry matter when continuously supplied with mixtures of NO3 and NH4 than when supplied with only NO3. The objective of this study was to determine if mixed N needs to be available before or after flowering, or continuously, in order to elicit increases in growth and yield of wheat. During vegetative development, plants of the cultivar ‘Marshal’ were grown in one of two nutrient solutions containing either a 100/0 or 50/50 mixture of NO3 to NH4 and, after flowering, half the plants were switched to the other solution. At physiological maturity, plants were harvested, separated into leaves, stems, roots, and grain and the dry matter and N concentration of each part determined. Yield components and the number of productive tillers were also determined. Availability of mixed N at either growth stage increased grain yield over plants receiving continuous NO3, but the increase was twice as large when the mixture was present during vegetative growth. When the N mixture was available only during vegetative growth the yield increase was similar to that obtained with continuous mixed N. The yield increases obtained with mixed N were the result of enhanced tillering and the production of more total biomass. Although plants receiving a mixed N treatment accumulated more total N than those grown solely with NO3, the greatest increase occurred when mixed N was available during vegetative growth. Because availability of mixed N after flowering increased the N concentration over all NO3 and pre‐flowering mixed N plants, it appears that the additional N accumulation from mixed N needs to be coupled with tiller development in order to enhance grain yields. These results confirm that mixed N nutrition increases yield of wheat and indicate that the most critical growth stage to supply the N mixture to the plant is during vegetative growth.  相似文献

Abstract

The form of nutrient solution nitrogen (either NH4‐N or NO3‐N or mixtures of the two) provided to plants influences the severity of many crop diseases. This greenhouse study was conducted to determine how growth, grain yield, and yield components of oat (Avena sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants given nutrient solutions containing different ratios of NO3‐N to NH4‐N would react to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) infection. Fifteen‐day‐old seedlings (2nd leaf stage) were either infected with BYDV (PAV strain) or left uninfected. Nutrient solution treatments (started 19 d after germination) provided three ratios of NO3‐N to NH4‐N (100% NO3, 50:50 NH4:NO3, or 100% NH4) for a 30‐d period, after which plant height and tillers plant?1 were measured. Oat and wheat plants given NH4 had fewer tillers than plants given the other nutrient solution treatments. BYDV‐infected oat and wheat plants were shorter than uninfected plants. All pots then received NO3 nutrient solution until plant maturity, after which days to anthesis, primary tiller height, grain yield and yield components were measured. In the NH4 nutrient solution treatments, BYDV infection significantly reduced individual kernel weight in oat and primary tiller height in wheat. These same measures were not significantly affected by BYDV infection in the NO3 or NH4NO3 nutrient solution treatments. There were no other significant nutrient solution by BYDV infection interactions for any other dependent variable measured. Nutrient solution treatments had no significant effect on grain yield, but BYDV infection reduced grain yield by 45% in oat and 46% in wheat. In conclusion, nutrient solution N form interacted with BYDV infection to alter disease tolerance in oat (kernel weight) and wheat (primary tiller height), but these alterations had no effect in ameliorating grain yield loss caused by BYDV disease.  相似文献

Abstract

Chlorophyll meter leaf readings were compared to grain yield, leaf N concentration and soil NH4‐N plus NO3‐N levels from N rate studies for dryland winter wheat Soil N tests and wheat leaf N concentrations have been taken in the spring at the late tillering stage (Feekes 5) to document a crop N deficiency and to make fertilizer N recommendations. The chlorophyll meter offers another possible technique to estimate crop N status and determine the need for additional N fertilizer. Results with the chlorophyll meter indicate a positive association between chlorophyll meter readings and grain yield, leaf N concentration and soil NH4‐N plus NO3‐N. Additional tests are needed to evaluate other factors such as differences among locations, cultivars, soil moisture and profile N status.  相似文献

Abstract

Fertilizer N recommendations for small grains are frequently based on soil test N but data is limited for irrigated spring wheat. The relative grain yield response of irrigated spring wheat to N as affected by inorganic soil N (NO3‐N and NH4‐N), yield potential and market class was evaluated in thirteen Southern Idaho field experiments involving N rates. Experiments were conducted on silt loam soils from 1978 to 1986. Preplant soil NO3‐N and NH4‐N to a depth of 60 cm and ranging from 27 to 142 kg/ha accounted for approximately 73% of the relative yield variability. NO3‐N and NH4‐N were significantly correlated (r=.72). NH4‐N with NO3‐N did not account for more of the relative yield variability than using NO3‐N alone.

Inorganic N in the first 30 cm and the second 30 cm were significantly correlated (r=.69) but N in the first depth increment accounted for more of the relative yield variability. The linear regression coefficient relating inorganic N in the first 30 cm to relative yield of unfertilized spring wheat was almost twice as high as the coefficient for the second 30 cm increment (.50 vs .27). Results indicate that inorganic N below 30 cm should be weighted differently than N in the first 30 cm when determining the N requirements of irrigated spring wheat.

Yield potential significantly affected the relative yield response to N. The response to N was not significantly affected by spring wheat market class (hard red vs soft white).

For estimating fertilizer N requirements, the results provide little justification for the current widespread practices of (1) using the combined NH4‐N and NO3‐N inorganic soil test N values when NO3‐N alone has as much predictive value and (2) assigning equal weight to inorganic soil N at all sampling depths.  相似文献

Abstract

Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is low in cereals especially in wheat. Different wheat cultivars may vary in NUE due to inherited biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) potential. In this study, three wheat cultivars (Punjab-2011, ARRI-2011 and Millat-2011) were fertilized at the rate of 140?kg ha?1 with three N sources [nitrophos (NP), urea and calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN)]. The soil nitrate (NO3?)-N contents were significantly enhanced coupled with simultaneous decrease in ammonium (NH4+)-N contents in the rhizosphere of cultivar Punjab-2011, fertilized with NP; however, cultivar Millat-2011 receiving urea behaved in contrast. Wheat cultivar Punjab-2011 fertilized with NP had the highest grain yield and agronomic NUE than other treatments due to significant increase in chlorophyl contents, allometric and yield parameters. The highest net benefit was recorded from the cultivar Punjab-2011 fertilized with CAN. In conclusion, use of NP in Punjab-2011 enhanced the grain yield and agronomic NUE.  相似文献

Fertigation with KNO3 as a means of reducing salinity hazards was tested with peanut (Arachis hypogaea) plants grown on dune sand, resulting in a reduction of plant growth and yield. The objective of this work was to study the interactions between N, K+ and NaCl as well as the effects of the NH4 +/NO3 ratio on vegetative and reproductive growth. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants were grown in polyethylene pots with fine calcareous dune sand with different proportions of NH4 + and NO3 , under saline (60 mM NaCl) and non‐saline conditions. Three replicates were harvested at the beginning of flowering, and one was grown to grain maturity. NaCl reduced shoot dry weight in all the treatments. Increasing the NH4 + proportion in the total of 6 mM N in the nutrient solution, increased shoot dry weight, did not change nitrogen concentration in the dry mass but increased P percentage, either with or without 60 mM NaCl. The number of tillers produced in each treatment was correlated with dry matter yield. The effect of the NH4 +/NO3 ratio may be explained by alteration of the cation‐anion balance on the nutrient uptake by roots, which lowered pH of the nutrient solution with increasing NH4 + concentration, by alteration of the cation‐anion balance on the nutrient uptake by roots, which lowered pH of the nutrient solution with increasing NH4 + concentration.  相似文献

The effect of ammonium:nitrate (NH4:NO3) ratio in nutrient solution on growth, photosynthesis (Pn), yield, and fruit quality attributes in hydroponically grown strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch) cvs. ‘Camarosa’ and ‘Selva’ was evaluated. There were four nutrient solutions of differing NH4:NO3 ratios as follows: 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, and 75:25. Plants grown in solution with 75% NH4 had lower leaf fresh and dry weights and leaf area than those with 25% NH4 in both cultivars. High ratios of NH4 and NO3 in the solution always reduced the yield. The yield was increased by 38% and 84% in ‘Camarosa’ and ‘Selva,’ respectively, when the plants were grown in the 25NH4:75NO3 solution compared with plants grown in a higher NH4 ratio solution. The increased yield at the 25 NH4:75NO3 ratio was the result of the increase in fruit size, i.e., length and fresh weight of fruits. Plants grown in the 25NH4:75NO3 solution had the highest rate of Pn, while those grown in 75NH4:25NO3 solution had the lowest Pn rates in both cultivars. Increasing the NH4 ratio in the solution from 0 to 75% significantly reduced the calcium (Ca) concentration and postharvest life of the fruits in both cultivars. Both higher leaf area and Pn rate appeared to be the reason for the increased yield and plant growth in the 25:75 ratios of nitrogen (N). The results indicate the preference of strawberry plant growth toward a greater nitrate N form in a hydroponic solution. Therefore, a combination of two forms of N in an appropriate ratio (25NH4:75NO3) appears to be beneficial to plant growth, yield, and quality of strawberry fruits.  相似文献

The large genotypic variation for salt tolerance in rice and wheat is the driving force behind efforts to identify appropriate cultivars for salt‐prone environments where large variations in salinity (electrical conductivity, EC) and sodicity (sodium adsorption ratio, SAR) levels exist. An evaluation of the commonly grown rice and wheat cultivars at different EC/SAR ratios may thus help in coping with the crop failures on salt‐affected soils. Accordingly, we evaluated some salt‐tolerant cultivars of rice and wheat for growth and yield at different soil salinity and sodicity levels in a sandy clay loam soil. Among the cultivars tested, rice ‘SSRI‐8’ produced the highest productive tillers and paddy yield, and wheat cultivar ‘SIS‐32’ produced the highest tillers and grain and straw yields. The high EC/SAR ratios proved more hazardous for rice than for wheat. Irrespective of the varieties tested, the highest levels of EC and SAR (T5 and T6) caused significant reduction in paddy yield, whereas at the lowest levels of EC and SAR (T1 and T2), paddy yield was not affected significantly when compared with the control. However, in case of wheat crop, all the levels [i.e., the lowest (T1 and T2), medium (T3 and T4), and the highest (T5 and T6) of EC and SAR tested] affected wheat yield adversely with significant differences. For both the crops, there were little or no differences in yield between the two ratios tested (i.e., 1:2 and 1:4) at all the levels of EC and SAR.  相似文献

Higher greenhouse tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) yield is obtained by using 25% of NH4‐N in solution compared to using NO3‐N as the sole nitrogen (N) source. However, blossom‐end rot (BER) may occur in tomato fruit when NH4‐N was present in nutrient solutions. High nutrient solution strengths improve tomato fruit quality, but can also increase BER. Two NH4‐N concentrations in solution (0 and 25%), and two nighttime solution strengths (NSS) (1X and 4X Steiner solution strength applied at 7 p.m.) were used to grow five indeterminate type greenhouse tomato cultivars: Caruso, Jumbo, Match, Max, and Trust. A significant interaction occurred between NH4‐N concentration and NSS factors: 0% NH4‐N and high NSS increased marketable yield and fruit:whole plant ratio, and reduced BER. In contrast, a concentration of 25% NH4‐N and high NSS reduced marketable yield and the fruit:whole plant ratio, and increased BER incidence. Max, Match, and Trust tomato cultivars produced high marketable yield and high dry weight of stem and leaves, but were susceptible to BER. Use of NH4‐N in solution reduced vegetative growth, and high NSS increased stem and leaf dry weight of the tomato plants. Fruit firmness was greater for the Max cultivar, and was unaffected by NH4‐N and NSS at the mature green, breaker, and red ripe fruit development stages. However, at the fully ripe stage, fruit firmness was higher with high NSS and with 25% NH4‐N.  相似文献

Intraspecific differences in the activities of nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthetase (GS), NADH dependent glutamate synthase (NADH‐GOGAT), and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) under contrasting forms of nitrogen (N) supply were studied in tissues of three spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) cultivars. The varieties (Viroflay, Butterflay, and Giant) were smooth, curly and semicurly leaved, respectively. The plants were grown in nutrient solutions containing NO3 as the sole source of N (100:0) and NO3 plus NH4 (80:20). Giant, the NH4 tolerance of which had been evaluated in growth and on the basis of nutrient uptake, had much higher GS and GDH activities in the roots and higher NR and NADH‐GOGAT levels in the leaves of plants grown on NO3 and NH4 than that grown on NO3 alone. On the level of N assimilating enzymes of Butterflay, mixed N nutrition caused an increase of GDH and NADH‐GOGAT in leaves and roots and at the same time a decrease of GS in the roots and NR in the leaves. An inverse relationship between GS and GDH activities was detected in the leaves and foots of Virofiay grown with both N sources. Finally, Viroflay gave the highest levels of GDH irrespective of the NO3:NH4 assayed, whereas the leaves of Giant were GDH deficient in comparison with the other cultivars. In addition, the GS activity approached zero in the roots of spinach cultivars characterized by hardly any NH4 tolerance, whereas in those of Giant it increased remarkably with the supply of NO3 plus NH4.  相似文献

To evaluate chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) and rocket salad [Eruca vesicaria (L.) Cav.subsp. sativa (Mill.)] capability to use ammonium‐nitrogen (NH4‐N) even in the absence of nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3‐N) in the nutrient solution, and the chances they offer to reduce leaf NO3 content, cultivated rocket and two cultivars of chicory ('Frastagliata’, whose edible parts are leaves and stems, and ‘Clio’, a leaf hybrid) were hydroponically grown in a growth chamber. Three nutrient solutions with the same nitrogen (N) level (4 mM) but a different NH4‐N:NO3‐N (NH4:NO3) ratio (100:0, 50:50, and 0:100) were used. Rocket growth was inhibited by NH4 nutrition, while it reached the highest values with the NH4:NO3 ratio 50:50. Water and N‐use efficiencies increased in rocket with the increase of NO3‐N percentage in the nutrient solution. In the best conditions of N nutrition, however, rocket accumulated NO3 in leaves in a very high concentration (about 6,300 mg kg‐1 fresh mass). For all the morphological and yield features analyzed, chicory resulted to be quite unresponsive to N chemical forms, despite it took more NO3‐N than NH4‐N when N was administered in mixed form. By increasing NO3‐N percentage in the nutrient solution, NO3 leaf content increased (5,466 mg kg‐1 fresh mass with the ratio NH4:NO3 0:100). On average, both chicory cultivars accumulated 213 mg NO3 kg‐1 fresh mass with the ratio NH4:NO3 100:0 and, differently from rocket, they showed that by using NH4 produce can be obtained very low in NO3 content.  相似文献

Abstract

Seedlings of four maize hybrids were grown hydroponically to investigate the impact of different N sources (Ca(NO3)2, (NH4)2SO4 and a 1:1 mixture of both) on (i) production and partitioning of root and shoot dry matter, (ii) concentration of soluble carbohydrates in roots and shoots and their partitioning to these plant parts, (iii) concentration of starch in the shoot, and (iv) N uptake. During the main phase of the experiments (duration 14d), the plants were grown in a greenhouse at 25/22°C day/night temperatures and a photoperiod of 16h. Nitrogen was supplied at three concentrations (2.8, 28, and 280 ppm). The root‐zone pH was 6.5. Under the lowest N supply, the N sources produced similar root and shoot dry matters. At the highest N level (280 ppm), NO3‐fed plants were superior. In contrast, the mixture of NH4 and NO3 ? was optimum at 28 ppm. More or less pronounced N form by N concentration interactions were also found in the concentration and distribution of soluble carbohydrates and in all remaing traits. There were almost statistically significant cultivar by N form interactions in shoot dry matter (P = 0.07) and total dry matter (P = 0.06), indicating the existence of considerable genotypic variation in sensivity to NH4‐N.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L., hyhrid Pioneer 3737) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cultivar Jantar) were grown hydroponically in nutrient solutions containing 10 mM nitrogen (N) as either the nitrate (NO3) anion or the ammonium (NH4) cation or in a 1:1 combination of both. Maize and wheat plants had different responses to the N sources. Maize growth and biomass accumulation were greatest with the equal combination of NO3 and NH4, while NO3 only was more favourable for wheat. The effects of the different N sources were detected on the 14th and 21st day for maize and wheat plants, respectively.  相似文献

Previous experiments have indicated that under greenhouse and hydroponic conditions, spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) produces higher yields, more tillers and dry matter when supplied with mixtures of NH4 and NO3 than when supplied with only one of them. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of selected ammonium and nitrate mixtures on dry matter yield, content of soluble protein, and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) and glutamine synthetase (GS) enzymatic activities. Cultivar ‘Salamanca’ wheat plants, 21 days old, were grown in one of five solutions containing one of the following: 7/0, 5/2, 3.5/3.5, 2/5 or 0/7 meq l‐1 of NH4NO3.

After two weeks of treatment applications, the highest dry matter production in both roots and shoots of the 35‐day‐old plants was observed in plants receiving the 2/5 NH4/NO3 ratio. The same response was observed on the accumulation of soluble protein and the potential activity of PEPCase. The specific activity of PEPCase was related to the plant applications of ammonium.

Treatments 3.5/3.5 and 2/5 NH4/NO3 ratio enhanced leaf GS activity between 28 and 57 days, and it was consistently 300–500% higher than root activity during the same period. Dry weight of the leaves, stems and grain showed the highest yields with those treatments at the physiological maturity of grains (105 days).  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) fertilizer is generally the most costly input for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production. Therefore, it was important to maximize fertilizer use efficiency and minimize N losses to the environment. One of the mechanisms responsible for decreased N use efficiency (NUE) was plant N loss. The objectives of this experiment were to determine fertilizer N recovery in winter wheat when produced for forage and grain, and to quantify potential plant N losses from flowering to maturity in winter wheat. Two long‐term (>25 years) winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) N rate fertility experiments (Experiment 222 and Experiment 502) were selected to evaluate 15N fertilizer recovery. Percent 15N recovery was determined from all microplots in plant tissue at flowering, in the grain, and straw at harvest and in the soil. Fertilizer N(15NH4 15NO3) was applied atratesof 0, 45, 90, and 135kg N ha‐1 in Experiment 222, and 0, 22, 45, 67, 90, and 112 kg N ha‐1 in Experiment 502. The ratio ofNO3 to NH4 + in wheat forage at flowering was positively correlated with estimated plant N loss. Estimated plant N loss (total N uptake in wheat at flowering minus N uptake in the grain and straw at maturity) ranged from a net gain of 12 kg N ha‐1 to a loss of 42 kg N ha‐1, and losses increased with increasing N applied.  相似文献

Plant nitrogen (N) uptake, growth, and N use efficiency may be affected by N form (NO3 or NH4 +) available to the root. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of mixed N form on dry matter production and partitioning, N uptake, and biomass N use efficiency defined as total dry matter produced per unit plant N (NUE1) in U.S. and tropical grain sorghums [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]. The U.S. derived genotype CK 60 and three tropical genotypes, Malisor‐7, M 35–1, and S 34, were evaluated in a greenhouse trial using three nutrient solutions differing in their NO3 /NH4 + ratio (100/0, 75/25, 50/50). Shoot and root biomass, N accumulation, and NUE, were determined at 10‐leaf and boot stages. Averaged over all genotypes, shoot and root biomass decreased when NH4 + concentration was increased in the solution. Shoot biomass was reduced by 11% for 75/25 and 26% for 50/50 ratios, as compared to 100/0 NO3 /NH4 +. Similarly, root biomass reduction was about 34% and 45% for the same ratios, respectively. Increasing NH4 + concentration also altered biomass partitioning between shoot and root as indicated by decreasing root/shoot ratio. Total plant N content and NUE1 were also reduced by mixed N source. Marked genotypic variability was found for tolerance to higher rates of NH4 +. The tropical line M 35–1 was well adapted to either NO3 as a sole source, or to an N source containing high amounts of NH4 +. Such a characteristic may exist in some exotic lines and may be used to improve genotypes which do not do well in excessively wet soil conditions where N uptake can be reduced.  相似文献

The influx and partitioning of sodium (Na) is controlled by potassium (K)/Na selectivity/exchange mechanisms. Since ammonium‐nitrogen (NH4‐N) has been shown to inhibit K absorption and K/Na selectivity/exchange mechanisms control Na influx and partitioning, our objective was to observe if NH4‐N affects Na influx and partitioning in muskmelon. Muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) were grown in a pH controlled nutrient solution with 100 mM NaCl in a complete nutrient solution containing either 10 mM nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3‐N) or NH4‐N. With NH4‐N, Na accumulation and partitioning to the leaf blade increased while K absorption was almost completely inhibited. A second study omitted K to simulate the inhibition of K absorption by NH4‐N and monitored Na accumulation and partitioning as K was depleted in the plant. Sodium accumulation and partitioning to the leaf increased as K decreased in the plant, mirroring the effect of NH4‐N. Roots appeared healthy in both studies. Our work indicates that at a given level of NaCl stress, NO3‐N reduces the level of stress experienced by muskmelon plants through reducing the net rate of Na influx and transport to the sensitive leaf blade, not by reducing chloride (Cl) absorption, thereby permitting these plants to “avoid”; this stress.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The components that define cereal-grain yield potential have not been well defined. The objective of this study was to collect many differing biological measurements from a long-term winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) study in an attempt to better define yield potential. Four treatments were sampled that annually received 0, 45, 90, and 135 kg N ha?1 at fixed rates of phosphorus (P) (30 kg ha?1) and potassium (K) (37 kg ha?1). Mid-season measurements of leaf color, chlorophyll, normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI), plant height, canopy temperature, tiller density, plant density, soil moisture, soil NH4-N, NO3-N, organic carbon (C), total nitrogen (N), pH, and N mineralization potential were collected. In addition, soil texture and bulk density were determined to characterize each plot. Correlations and multiple linear-regression analyses were used to determine those variables that can predict final winter wheat grain yield. Both the correlation and regression analyses suggested mid-season NDVI, chlorophyll content, plant height, and total N uptake to be good predictors of final winter wheat grain yield.  相似文献

Cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) is widely used as a winter cover crop to conserve soil residual nitrogen (N) in the mid‐Atlantic region of the United States. Cereal rye, however, has agronomic drawbacks that may make other winter small grain crops more desirable alternatives. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a small grain that could substitute for cereal rye as a cover crop because it would give growers the flexibility of using it as a cover crop or growing it to maturity. There is currently little information on early season N accumulation of winter wheat cultivars, which is critical for the success of a small grain cover crop. To determine the degree of variation in early season N accumulation and early season biomass yield in soft red winter wheat in the mid‐Atlantic region, twenty‐five commercially available cultivars were evaluated at Beltsville, MD in the 1996/1997 and 1997/1998 growing seasons. Acereal rye cultivar ("Wheeler") was included as a cover crop control. Samples of plant tissue were taken at Feekes growth stage 5 and at physiological maturity each year. There were significant differences among cultivars for early season N accumulation and biomass yield. A large group of wheat cultivars had similar early season N accumulation and biomass yield as the cereal rye cover crop control. This suggests that some cultivars of winter wheat may be as effective as cereal rye as a winter cover crop. Early season N accumulation was highly correlated (r=0.90***) with early season biomass yield rather than with plant N content. These results indicate that soft red winter wheat has potential as a dual grain and cover crop and could be considered an alternative to cereal rye as a winter cover crop for conserving residual soil nitrogen in the mid‐Atlantic region of the United States.  相似文献

The influence of nitrogen concentration and the ratio of NO3 to NH4 on the marketable yield and fruit quality characteristics of cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Palmera) grown on rockwool during spring and winter in southern Greece were studied. Nitrogen (N) was supplied at three N concentrations and four ratios of NO3 to NH4. During the spring, increasing total nitrogen or NH4 concentration within the nutrient solution significantly decreased the mean total yield and fruit size. However, during the winter, the yield and number of fruits per plant were not affected by N concentration, but were reduced by increasing NH4:NO3 ratio. Fruits that were produced under low N concentrations were lighter in color, but only the color of the apical tissues of the fruit was affected by the NH4:NO3 ratio. Flesh firmness of the fruit was not affected by N source or concentration, except for the apical tissue, the firmness of which declined with increasing N concentration. On the basis of the present results, for highest yield and fruit quality during both the spring and winter seasons of southern Greece, 100 ppm N applied solely in the form of NO3 is indicated.  相似文献
