Roots of endophyte‐infected (E+) tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) exude more phenolic‐like reductants than roots of endophyte‐free (E‐) plants when mineral stressed. Phenolic compounds are efficient chelators of aluminum (Al) and may influence Al tolerance in many plant species. The objective of our study was to determine if enhanced release of phenolic compounds by roots of E+ plants contributes to Al tolerance in tall fescue. Two cloned genotypes (DN2 and DN11) of tall fescue infected with their naturally occurring fungal endophyte Neotyphodium coenophialum (Morgan‐Jones and Gams) Glenn, Bacon and Hanlin and their noninfected isolines were grown in nutrient solutions at 0 μM Al (Al‐) and at 640 μM Al (Al+) under controlled environment conditions. Root and shoot dry matter (DM) of endophyte‐infected tall fescue was greater in E+ than E‐ plants by 57% and 40%, respectively, when plants were grown without Al. Endophyte infection did not affect root and shoot DM of tall fescue grown with Al but relative (to Al‐treatment) reduction in root and shoot DM was greater in E+ than E‐ plants. In response to Al stress, more Al (47%) and P (49%) could be desorbed from root surfaces of E+ than E‐ plants. Aluminum concentrations in roots of E+ plants were 35% greater and P concentrations were 10% less than those determined in roots of E‐plants. No differences in mineral concentrations were observed in shoots, regardless of endophyte status, or Al level in nutrient solution. Roots of E+ plants increased pH of both Al‐ and Al+ nutrient solutions to a greater extent than roots of E‐ plants in a 48 h interval. Our results show that more Al can be sequestered on root surfaces and in root tissues of endophyte‐infected tall fescue than in plants devoid of endophyte. Aluminum sequestration was greater on root surfaces and in root tissues of E+ than E‐ plants of a given tall fescue genotype. Our results suggest that increased exudation of phenolic‐like compounds from roots of endophyte‐infected tall fescue may be directly involved in Al tolerance and serves as a mechanism for widespread adaptability and success of endophyte‐tall fescue associations.  相似文献

Background: The low fertility of sandy soils in South‐Western Australia is challenging for the establishment of temperate perennial pastures. Aims: To assess whether microbial consortium inoculant may improve plant growth by increasing nutrient supply, root biomass and nutrient uptake capacity. Methods: Five temperate perennial pasture grasses–cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L. cv. Howlong), phalaris (Phalaris aquatica L. cv. Atlas PG), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea L. cv. Prosper), tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum L. cv. Dundas), and veldt grass (Ehrharta calycina Sm. cv. Mission) were tested in a controlled environment on the growth and nutrition with the microbial consortium inoculant and rock mineral fertiliser. Results: Veldt grass produced the highest shoot and root growth, while tall fescue yielded the lowest. Rock mineral fertiliser with or without microbial consortium inoculant significantly increased root and shoot biomass production across the grass species. The benefit of microbial consortium inoculation applied in conjunction with rock mineral fertiliser was significant regarding shoot N content in tall wheatgrass, cocksfoot and tall fescue. Shoot P and K concentrations also increased in the five grass species by microbial consortium inoculation combined with rock mineral fertiliser in comparison with the control treatment. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonisation decreased with rock mineral fertilisation with or without microbial consortium inoculant except in cocksfoot. Conclusions: The response to microbial consortium inoculation, either alone or in combination with rock mineral fertiliser, was plant species‐dependent, indicating its potential use in pasture production.  相似文献

Response of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.), and red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) to aluminum was evaluated in a nutrient culture system under controlled conditions. In each of the species, varietal differences were also compared. In the absence of Al stress, varieties of alfalfa and Tensas red clover produced more dry weight than the other legumes. However, among the legumes tested, alfalfa was the most sensitive to Al. Aluminum reduced the uptake of many of essential nutrients. Overall, red clover cultivars experienced the least reduction in elemental uptake, whereas alfalfa cultivars experienced the greatest reduction in uptake of elements under Al stress. The efficiency ratio (ER) assisted in differentiating legumes entries into efficient and inefficient utilizers of absorbed nutrients. The ER is defined as milligrams of dry shoot weight produced per milligram of element in the shoot. The presence of Al in the growth medium reduced the ER for all elements. With a few exceptions, ER for various elements, gave positive correlations with shoot weight. The species and cultivars used in this study showed inter‐ and intraspecific differences in growth, uptake of nutrients and nutrient efficiency ratios in the presence or absence of Al stress.  相似文献

Abstract

Fine fescues (Festuca spp.) are generally considered acid tolerant compared to other cool‐season turfgrasses. However, there is little information on aluminum (Al) tolerance of fine fescues at both the species and cultivar levels. The objectives of this study were to identy cultivars of fine fescues with superior ability to tolerate Al, and compare the Al tolerance of endophyte infected and endophyte‐free cultivars in Al tolerance. A total of 58 cultrvars of fine fescues belonging to five species or subspecies [14 hard fescue (F. longifolia Thuill), 25 Chewings fescue (F. rubra L. ssp. commutata Gaud), 15 strong creeping red fescue (F. rubra L. ssp. rubra), two slender creeping red fescue (F. rubra L. ssp. trichophylla), and two sheep fescue (F. ovina L.)] were selected from the 1993 National Fineleaf Fescue Test and screened under greenhouse conditions using solution culture, sand culture, and acid Tatum soil (Clayey, mixed, thermic, typic, Hapludult). The acid Tatum soil had 69% exchangeable Al and a pH of 4.4. An Al concentration of 640 μM and a pH of 4.0 were used in solution culture and sand culture screening. The grasses were seeded and grown for three weeks before harvesting. Aluminum tolerance was assessed by measuring relative root length, shoot length, root weight, shoot weight, and total dry matter. Differences in Al tolerance were identified at both the species and cultivar level based on relative growth were as follows: i) hard fescue and Chewings fescue were more Al tolerant than strong creeping red fescue; ii) within species or subspecies, significant differences were found among cultvars of Chewings fescue, strong creeping red fescue, slender creeping red fescue, and sheep fescue; whereas no difference was observed among the hard fescue cultivars; and iii) the cultivars containing endophyte exhibited greater Al tolerance compared the eudophyte‐free cultivars. The results indicate that fine fescues vary in Al tolerance and there is potential to improve Al tolerance with breeding and to refine their management recommendations regarding soil pH.  相似文献

Salinity is a limiting factor for forage productivity in irrigated areas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the salt tolerance index (STI), the K/Na ratio, and the forage quality of several introduced cool season grass species in irrigated agriculture. Four irrigated water salinity concentrations were used (control, 4000, 8000, and 12000 ppm sodium chloride (NaCl)), and four grass cultivars belonging to three species were established under greenhouse conditions at the Qassim University Agricultural Research and Experimental Station during the 2012 and 2013 growing seasons (perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L., cvs. Aries and Quartet), endophyte-free tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb., cv. Fawn), and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L., cv. Tekapo)). A randomized complete block design (RCBD) using three replications was used. Cultivars were evaluated based on their dry weights (g m?2) and forage quality. Additionally, the STI and potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+) concentrations in the studied grass cultivars were evaluated. The dry weights of the grasses decreased significantly as the salinity level of the irrigation water increased. At a salinity of 4000 ppm, the Aries perennial ryegrass had the highest dry weight at both sample cuttings. The Aries, Fawn, and Quartet grasses had the highest STI values. The percent of K+ and the K/Na ratio increased as the salinity of the irrigation water increased for the Fawn tall fescue and Quartet perennial ryegrass. In the previously cultivars, the percentage of Na+ decreased as the salinity level of the irrigation water increased, which was in contrast with the results observed for the Tekapo orchardgrass.  相似文献

Ten‐day‐old seedlings of 22 rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars were subjected to aluminum (Al) stress in nutrient solutions with an initial pH of 4.0±0.1. The rice cultivars exhibited a wide range of response by changing the rhizosphere pH, and the uptake and efficiency ratio (ER) of utilization of nutrients both in the presence (222 μM Al) and absence of Al. In the presence of Al, the cultivars Co 37 and Basmati 370 recorded maximum uptake and highest ER's for calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), and iron (Fe). The cultivars Damodar and ADT 36 performed very poorly in terms of nutrient uptake. The tolerant cultivars (Al‐insensitive) efficiently took up and utilized Ca and P in the presence of Al. The susceptible (Al‐sensitive) and intermediate cultivars exhibited less Ca and P uptake and utilization. There was no apparent relationship between foliar Al content and the efficiency ratios. However, the Al‐tolerant cultivars, Co 37 and Basmati 370, accumulated less Al in their foliage which was the reverse in case for the Al‐susceptible cultivars. Among the 22 rice cultivars tested, Co 37 and Basmati 370 emerged as the most Al‐tolerant. Hence, they would be recommended for cultivation in acidic, infertile soils of the tropics. The results of this study are discussed in terms of identifying the mechanism of Al tolerance or sensitivity among the studied rice cultivars as related to their nutrient metabolism.  相似文献

Abstract

A cool season perennial grass with a root system capable of penetrating hardpans and which can accumulate adequate Mg to prevent deficiencies in forage is needed in the Coastal Plain region. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the effects of magnesium (Mg) concentration in nutrient solution and root diameter on Mg uptake and growth of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Propagules of two fescue clones with large root diameter (LDR >1 mm), two clones with small root diameter (SDR <0.8 mm), and a single clone from ‘Kentucky 31’ (Ky‐31) were transferred into 12‐liter tanks containing Mg concentrations of 3, 21, 42, 125, 250, and 500 μM as MgSO4 and grown for 39 or 70 days. Leaf Mg concentration was increased linearly with Mg solution concentration in LDR clones for a 39‐day growth period (Harvest 1), but increased according to a cubic equation in the SDR clones and the Ky‐31. Predicted leaf Mg concentration as a function of solution Mg followed a cubic equation for a 70‐day growth period (Harvest 2) in all clones. Predicted root Mg concentration was linearly related to Mg solution concentration for the LDR clones and the Ky‐31, but followed a cubic equation for the SDR clones for the first growth period. For the second growth period, the root Mg concentration of the SDR clones and the Ky‐31 was increased linearly, while the LDR clones followed a quadratic equation. Magnesium uptake followed a cubic equation with Mg solution concentration for both growth periods on all tall fescue clones. This nonlinear variation of Mg uptake and plant Mg concentration with respect to solution Mg concentration strongly suggests that a dual uptake mechanism might have been present in tall fescue clones. Root volume was greater in the SDR than LDR clones or Ky‐31 for both growth periods. The Ky‐31 had the greatest leaf and root dry weight for both growth periods, while the LDR clones had the lowest.  相似文献

A rapid and simple nutrient addition technique was used for evaluating Al tolerance of six local upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars (BG35, BR21, DA25, DA26, DA14, and DA22) from Bangladesh and three IRRI rice, IR46, IR97, and IR45, cultivars from the Philippines. The plants were grown for 21 days with Al (0 μM, 140 μM, 280 μM or 560 μM) at pH 4.1. The roots were more affected by Al than the shoots. In rating cultivars for Al sensitivity, relative shoot weight (RSW) was found to be the best parameter due to the severe damage of the roots, irrespective of Al sensitivity. The cultivars were rated as Al tolerant (BG35, BR21, DA25, and DA26), mid‐tolerant (DA14, DA22, and IR46) and sensitive (IR97 and IR45) . More Al was retained in the roots of tolerant cultivars than in the mid‐tolerant or sensitive cultivars. In shoots, the Al concentration of tolerant cultivars was less than in the mid‐tolerant or in the sensitive cultivars and the inhibition of growth was proportional to Al concentration irrespective of Al tolerance. Therefore, the variation among cultivars in Al sensitivity could be related to the capacity of roots to retain Al from transport to the shoots.  相似文献

Field water stress is a common problem in crop production, especially in arid and semi-arid zones and it is widely hypothesized that silicon (Si) could reduce water stress in plants. We set up a greenhouse study to evaluate some silicon sources—potassium silicate (K2SiO3), calcium silicate (CaSiO3) and silica gel for growth and nutrient uptake by four grass species under adequate and deficit irrigation. The four species studied were Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana), Timothy grass (Phleum pratense), Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense) and Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). For all species, the biomass yield response to applied silicon under deficit irrigation was significantly better than under adequate irrigation. The yield response of Rhodes grass across silicon sources was 205% under deficit irrigation compared with only 59% under adequate irrigation; for Sudan grass it was 49% compared with 26% and for Timothy, it was 48% compared with a mere 1%. The higher responses under deficit irrigation suggest that the plants relied more on silicon to endure drought stress. Biomass yield of individual plants also differed according to soil water levels with Timothy grass being the most sensitive to water stress as it exhibited the highest yield response (209%) to adequate irrigation. This was followed by tall fescue (122%) and Rhodes grass (97%). Sudan grass was the least affected by deficit irrigation, possibly on account of improved root mass and its natural drought tolerance. Strong associations were noted between the uptake of silicon and those of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) irrespective of soil water condition, but the uptake of potassium (K) was more strongly correlated with that of Si under deficit than adequate irrigation. Improvements in plant growth following Si application could therefore be linked to enhanced uptake of major essential nutrients.  相似文献

New breeding lines of Phalaris (Phalaris aquatica), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea = syn. Lolium arundinaceum) are currently under evaluation for the selection of new cultivars for low rainfall environments. The aim was to test the relative tolerance of six elite genotypes of Phalaris, cocksfoot and tall fescue to aluminium and manganese toxicities in solution culture. Two solution culture experiments were conducted at aluminium concentrations of 0, 50, 100, 200 and 300 µM, or manganese (Mn) concentrations of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mM in a basal nutrient solution at pH 4.5. Elite genotypes of cocksfoot, AVH48 Selection and Moroccan Fine, exist with improved tolerance to aluminium and Mn toxicities. Elite genotypes of Phalaris, particularly Northern Retainer, were superior to Sirolan at moderate to high aluminium concentrations in solution. There was little difference in the tolerance to aluminium and manganese toxicities between the elite genotypes and existing cultivars of tall fescue.  相似文献

Toxic effects of aluminium (Al) on root tips are considered to decrease export of cytokinins to shoots, and deficiency of cytokinins has been made responsible for Al‐induced inhibition of shoot growth. But no experimental data on the influence of Al on endogenous cytokinin levels in higher plants have been reported. In this study, the endogenous levels of zeatin riboside (ZR) and dihydrozeatin riboside (DHZR) of roots, stems, and leaves of two bean cultivars (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Contender and cv Strike) exposed to Al in continuously flowing nutrient solution (pH 4.5) was analysed. The supply of a high Al concentration (sum of monomeric Al species, 127 μM) caused severe inhibition of root elongation in both cultivars. The cv Strike was more affected by both Al‐induced mineral nutrient disorders and Al‐induced alteration of leaf water relationships. In both cultivars Al‐supply significantly increased ZR and DHZR. Leaves of Al‐treated plants exhibited a more than three times higher concentration of ribosylated cytokinins than controls. Nevertheless, stomatal resistance was significantly increased by Al in both cultivars. Our results support the hypothesis that Al affects plants not by inducing deficiency of cytokinins but of some other factor necessary for the manifestation of cytokinin action.  相似文献

In acid soils, Al toxicity and nutrient deficiencies are main constraints for low yield of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.). A controlled growth chamber experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of three Al saturations (0.2, 19, and 26%) adjusted by addition of dolomitic lime on growth and nutrient uptake parameters of cacao. Overall, increasing soil Al saturation decreased shoot and root dry weight, stem height, root length, relative growth rate, and net assimilation rate. However, increasing soil Al saturation increased leaf area, specific leaf area (total leaf area/total leaf dry wt), and leaf area ratio (total leaf area/shoot+root wt). Increasing soil Al saturation decreased uptake of elements. Nutrient influx (IN) and transport (TR) decreased significantly for K, Ca and Mg, and showed an increasing trend for S and P as soil Al saturation increased. However, increasing soil Al saturation significantly increased nutrient use efficiency ratio (ER, mg of shoot weight produced per mg of element in shoot) of Ca, Mg and K and decreased ER for other elements. Reduction of soil acidity constraints with addition of lime and fertilizers appear to be key factors in improving cacao yields in infertile, acidic, tropical soils.  相似文献

Two upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars with high (IR45) and low (BG35) aluminium (Al) sensitivity were selected to investigate the influence of Al on growth and uptake and distribution of macronutrients [potassium (K), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg)] when the plants were grown at various levels of nutrient supply. The plants were grown for 21 days with or without 140 μM Al at pH 4.1. Nutrients were supplied with 2.5, 5.0, 10, or 15% relative increase/day relative nutrient addition rate (RNR), according to a nutrient supply program. In this range of nutrient supply rates, the degree of Al sensitivity in the two rice cultivars was not markedly affected, except for root growth in BG35 that was more inhibited at low RNRs than at high RNRs. Regardless of nutrient supply rate, Al was mainly confined to the roots in both cultivars. However, the concentrations of Al in the shoots was consistently lower in BG35 than in IR45. Different Al sensitivity in BG35 and IR45 was associated with different influence on uptake and distribution of P and Ca. Uptake of Mg was drastically inhibited by Al at all nutrient supply levels in both cultivars. Uptake and distribution of K were not negatively affected by Al.  相似文献

Toxic levels of aluminum can cause severe yield reductions in many crop species, but sericea lespedeza [Lespedeza cuneata (Dum.‐Cours.) G. Don] has demonstrated considerable tolerance. Aluminum tolerances of six sericea lespedeza cultivars (Am 312, Appalow, AU Lotan, Interstate, Interstate 76, Serala) representing a broad genetic base were evaluated in a Monmouth soil [26.2% Al saturation (pH 4.8) vs. 2.8% Al saturation (pH 5.7)] and in nutrient solutions (0 vs 111 μM Al; pH 4.5). The soil and nutrient culture studies were harvested 30 and 27 d after seeding, respectively.

Aluminum stress did not reduce root and shoot growth significantly, nor were the pooled Al stress x cultivar interactions significant. Cultivars differed significantly in mean shoot and root vigor in nutrient solutions but not in soil. R‐esponses in soil were only weakly correlated with responses in nutrient solutions. Am 312 and Appalow had the lowest relative weight values (dry weight stressed/dry weight unstressed) in both media and Interstate and Interstate 76 the highest. Interstate 76 exhibited a significant positive response (5% level) to Al when evaluated in nutrient solutions.  相似文献

Ten‐day‐old seedlings of 22 rice (Oryza sativa.L) cultivars originated from various tropical countries were subjected to six levels of aluminum (Al) [0, 74, 148, 222, 296, and 370 μM] to test their tolerance to Al toxicity in nutrient solutions at pH 4.0±0.l. Seedlings were grown in the presence of Al under controlled environmental conditions in growth chambers. The nutrient solutions were replenished once a week. After 30 days, treatments were terminated and the differences in their growth patterns were compared. Standard growth parameters such as plant growth, dry matter production, relative growth reduction in roots (RGRS) and shoots (RGRS), root tolerance index (RTI) and shoot tolerance index (STI) have been used as markers of Al toxicity.

Rice cultivars studied exhibited wide range of responses in their tolerance to Al. Though, the rice cultivars were subjected to six levels of Al, a good degree of separation in their responses was observed only at 222 μM Al. Therefore, this concentration was chosen to analyze and compare the performances of the cultivars. Further, only six cultivars showed significant changes in their expression in the presence of Al compared to control, and so data have been presented only for those cultivars for clarity. The cultivars BW 196, Bhura Rata, Basmati 370 and Co 37 recorded increases in growth, while Damodar and ADT 36 showed severe inhibitions in the presence of Al. Furthermore, in RTI and STI also Co 37 and Basmati 370 registered their tolerance to Al by showing increased growth in the presence of Al. Whereas, Damodar and ADT 36 recorded severe reductions. The RGRR and RGRS data also substantiates this finding. Based on the growth parameters, the six rice cultivars were ranked based on their tolerance to Al: Co 37 > Basmati 370 > BW 196 > Bhura Rata > Damodar > ADT 36. Co 37 and Basmati 370 are the two most tolerant cultivars which performed extremely well in the presence of Al, and Damodar and ADT 36 are the most susceptible cultivars. Therefore, the Al‐tolerant cultivars can be used for future breeding programes to develop Al‐tolerant, cultivars that subsequendy can be recommended for planting in acidic, infertile soils of the tropics.  相似文献

Abstract

Successful implementation of vegetative buffers requires inclusion of plant species that facilitate rapid dissipation of deposited contaminants before they have a chance to be transported in surface runoff or to shallow groundwater. Thirty‐six field lysimeters with six different ground covers [bare ground, orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.), timothy (Phleum pratense L.), and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.)] were established to evaluate the ability of grasses to reduce nutrient levels in soils and shallow groundwater. Nitrate (NO3 ?) and orthophosphate (PO4 3?) were uniformly applied to each lysimeter. In addition, half of the lysimeters received an application of atrazine, and the other half received isoxaflutole (Balance?) at levels indicative of surface runoff from cropland. The leachate from each lysimeter was collected after major rainfall events during a 25‐day period, and soil was collected from each lysimeter at the end of the 25‐day period. Water samples were analyzed for NO3‐N and PO4‐P, and soil samples were analyzed for NO3‐N. Grass treatments reduced NO3‐N levels in leachate by 74.5 to 99.7% compared to the bare ground control, but timothy was significantly less effective at reducing NO3‐N leaching than the other grasses. Grass treatments reduced residual soil NO3‐N levels by 40.9 to 91.2% compared to the control, with tall fescue, smooth bromegrass, and switchgrass having the lowest residual levels. Switchgrass decreased PO4‐P leaching to the greatest extent, reducing it by 60.0 to 74.2% compared to the control. The ability of the forage grasses to reduce nutrient levels in soil or shallow groundwater were not significant between herbicide treatments. Quantification of microbial NO3 ? dissipation rates in soil suggested that denitrification was greatest in switchgrass, smooth bromegrass, and tall fescue treatments. The overall performance of these three grasses indicated that they are the most suitable for use in vegetative buffers because of their superior ability to dissipate soil NO3 ? and reduce nutrient transport to shallow groundwater.  相似文献

Aluminum (Al) toxicity was studied in two tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ‘Mountain Pride’ and Floramerica') grown in diluted nutrient solution (pH 4.0) at 0, 10, 25, and 50 μM Al levels. In the presence of 25 and 50 μM Al, significant reduction was found in leaf area, dry weight, stem length, and longest root length of both cultivars. Growth of ‘Floramerica’ was less sensitive to Al toxicity than growth of ‘Mountain Pride’. Elemental composition of the nutrient solutions were compared immediately after the first Al addition and four days later. The uptake of micronutrients copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), zinc (Zn), boron (B), and iron (Fe) from the nutrient solution was reduced in both cultivars with increasing Al levels. Nutrient solution Al gradually decreased in time for every treatment; less in cultures of ‘Floramerica’ than in ‘Mountain Pride’. Aluminum treatments decreased the calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), Mn, Fe, and Zn content in the roots, stems, and leaves. Aluminum treatment promoted the accumulation of P, Mo, and Cu in the roots, and inhibited the transport of these nutrients into stems and leaves. At 25 and 50 μM levels of Al, lower Al content was found in the roots of cv. “Floramerica’ than in the roots of cv. ‘Mountain Pride’.  相似文献

Quality (color and density) of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) as a turfgrass is reduced during both the winter and summer in Japan. Seasonal variations in nutrient and carbohydrate levels of six cultivars of tall fescue were measured to determine if these changes are related to the reduction in the turf quality. There were significant differences among the cultivars in nutrient and carbohydrate levels. The nutrient and carbohydrate levels of tall fescue cultivars changed seasonally. Levels of calcium (Ca) and zinc (Zn) were below the sufficiency, but the concentrations of other nutrients were sufficient during the summer suggesting that the reduction in the quality of tall fescue cultivars during the summer in Japan may not be related to the lack of these nutrients in the plant tissues. The nitrogen (N), Ca, magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), Zn, iron (Fe), and copper (Cu) levels in the plant tissues were below the adequate range in the spring which could be attributed to high growth rate since no deficiency symptom was observed. With exception of Ca content, plants contained sufficient or more than sufficient nutrients in their tissues during the fall. Though concentrations of other nutrients were sufficient in the plant tissues in the winter, levels of N, Ca, Mg, P, molybdenum (Mo), Zn, and Cu were lower than plant's requirement which could be due to low temperature since availability of the nutrients reduces under low temperature. There were no deficiency symptoms of these nutrients, but lack of N in the plant tissue could be the cause of the reduction in the color of the tall fescue cultivare in winter. Levels of glucose, fructose, sucrose, fructan, and starch in the summer were higher or equal to those carbohydrate levels in the spring or fall suggesting that decline in tall fescue quality in Japan during the summer may not be related to carbohydrates shortages. Though starch levels were lower in the winter than other seasons, other carbohydrate levels were equal or higher than the levels in the spring and the total carbohydrate content was much higher in the winter than other seasons, suggesting that reduction in tall fescue quality in Japan during the winter may not be related to carbohydrates shortages.  相似文献

Reports on varietal diversity of upland rice in relation to relatively low aluminium (Al) levels are limited. Therefore, effects were examined of 35, 70, and 140 μM Al on plant growth and uptake of macro‐ and micro‐nutrients (K, P, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn) and their distribution in three upland rice (Oryza saliva L.) cultivars (BG35, DA14, and IR45) with different Al sensitivity. After an initial growth period of 5 days without Al, the plants were grown for 21 days in nutrient solutions containing Al at pH 4.1. Cultivar BG35 showed the highest and IR45 the lowest tolerance to Al when fresh weights of shoots or roots were considered. Except for IR45 at 140 μM Al, total dry weight was unaffected by Al, and the cultivars could not be clearly distinguished with respect to Al tolerance. Net Al uptake rate was higher in Al tolerant BG35 than in DA14 or IR45. Conversely, in IR45 the absorbed Al was rapidly transported to the shoots and accumulated there. In BG35, net P and Ca uptake rates in Al‐treated plants were high enough to maintain the P and Ca status of the shoots at all Al levels. Irrespective of Al sensitivity, there was a general depression of internal Mg concentration in Al‐reated plants. The Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn concentrations of the plants were not negatively affected by Al in any of the cultivars.  相似文献

Limited information is available on biological effects of various levels of nickel (Ni) (deficiency to toxicity levels) on growth and yield of certain crops, particularly vegetables. In this sand‐culture study, we investigated the effects of four levels of Ni (0, 50, 100, and 200 μM) on growth, yield, and fruit‐quality attributes of two cucumber cultivars (Cucumis sativus L. cvs. Super Dominus and Negin) supplied with urea or NH4NO3 as nitrogen source. Addition of 50 μM Ni to the nutrient solution resulted in a significant increase of shoot and root dry‐matter yield of cv. Negin although this increase was greater in the urea‐fed plants than those fed with NH4NO3. In both cultivars, addition of 50 μM Ni increased urease activity and thereby decreased the urea concentration in the urea treatment. Addition of 100 and 200 μM Ni caused a significant decrease in root and shoot growth of cucumber although this decrease was insignificant for cv. Super Dominus in the 100 μM treatment. The highest fruit yield, total soluble solids (TSS), and fruit firmness were achieved at the 50 μM Ni treatment. Regardless of nitrogen source, Ni addition proportional to the concentration used increased leaf Ni concentration and fruit acid ascorbic concentration. The concentration of Ni required for optimum growth and yield of cucumber varied with cultivars. The level of 50 μM was sufficient for optimum growth of cv. Negin in nutrient‐solution culture while lower concentration of Ni was required for cv. Super Dominus. While the beneficial effects of sufficient levels of Ni on growth and yield of urea‐fed plants was greater than with NH4NO3‐fed plants, the toxic effects of Ni in these plants were also greater.  相似文献
