Optimal fertilizer nitrogen (N) rates result in economic yield levels and reduced pollution. A soil test for determining optimal fertilizer N rates for wheat has not been developed for Quebec, Canada, or many other parts of the world. Therefore, the objectives were to determine: 1) the relationship among soil nitrate (NO? 3)- N, soil ammonium (NH + 4)- N and N fertilizer on wheat yields; and 2) the soil sampling times and depths most highly correlated with yield response to soil NO? 3-N and NH + 4-N. In a three year research work, wet and dried soil samples of 0- to 30- and 30- to 60-cm depths from 20 wheat fields that received four rates of N fertilizer at seeding and postseeding (plants 15 cm tall) were analyzed for NH + 4-N and NO? 3 -N using a quick-test (N-Trak) and a standard laboratory method. Wheat yield response to N fertilizer was limited, but strong to soil NO? 3-N.  相似文献

In the tropics, frequent nitrogen(N)fertilization of grazing areas can potentially increase nitrous oxide(N2O)emissions.The application of nitrification inhibitors has been reported as an effective management practice for potentially reducing N loss from the soil-plant system and improving N use efficiency(NUE).The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the co-application of nitrapyrin(a nitrification inhibitor,NI)and urea in a tropical Andosol on the behavior of N and the emissions of N2O from autotrophic and heterotrophic nitrification.A greenhouse experiment was performed using a soil(pH 5.9,organic matter content 78 g kg-1,and N 5.6 g kg-1)sown with Cynodon nlemfuensis at 60%water-filled pore space to quantify total N2O emissions,N2O derived from fertilizer, soil ammonium(NH4+)and nitrate(NO3-),and NUE.The study included treatments that received deionized water only(control,NI).No significant differences were observed in soil NH4+content between the UR and UR+NI treatments, probably because of soil mineralization and NO3-produced by heterotrophic nitrification, which is not effectively inhibited by nitrapyrin. After 56 d,N2O emissions in UR(0.51±0.12 mg N2O-N concluded that the soil organic N mineralization and heterotrophic nitrification are the main processes of NH4+and NO3-production.Additionally,it was found that N2O emissions were partially a consequence of the direct oxidation of the soil's organic N via heterotrophic nitrification coupled to denitrification. Finally, the results suggest that nitrapyrin would likely exert significant mitigation on N2O emissions only if a substantial N surplus exists in soils with high organic matter content.  相似文献

A laboratory-based aerobic incubation was conducted to investigate nitrogen(N) isotopic fractionation related to nitrification in five agricultural soils after application of ammonium sulfate((NH4)2SO4). The soil samples were collected from a subtropical barren land soil derived from granite(RGB),three subtropical upland soils derived from granite(RQU),Quaternary red earth(RGU),Quaternary Xiashu loess(YQU) and a temperate upland soil generated from alluvial deposit(FAU). The five soils varied in nitrification potential, being in the order of FAU YQU RGU RQU RGB. Significant N isotopic fractionation accompanied nitrification of NH+4. δ15N values of NH+4 increased with enhanced nitrification over time in the four upland soils with NH+4 addition, while those of NO-3 decreased consistently to the minimum and thereafter increased. δ15N values of NH+4 showed a significantly negative linear relationship with NH+4-N concentration, but a positive linear relationship with NO-3-N concentration. The apparent isotopic fractionation factor calculated based on the loss of NH+4 was 1.036 for RQU,1.022 for RGU,1.016 for YQU,and 1.020 for FAU,respectively. Zero- and first-order reaction kinetics seemed to have their limitations in describing the nitrification process affected by NH+4 input in the studied soils. In contrast,N kinetic isotope fractionation was closely related to the nitrifying activity, and might serve as an alternative tool for estimating the nitrification capacity of agricultural soils.  相似文献

Corn requires high nitrogen (N) fertilizer use, but no soil N test for fertilizer N requirement is yet available in Quebec. Objectives of this research were (1) to determine the effects of soil nitrate (NO3 ?)-N, soil ammonium (NH4 +)-N, and N fertilizer rates on corn yields and (2) to determine soil sampling times and depths most highly correlated with yields and fertilizer N response under Quebec conditions. Soil samples were taken from 0- to 30-cm and 30- to 60-cm depths at seeding and postseeding (when corn height reached 20 cm) to determine soil NH4 + and NO3 ? in 44 continuous corn sites fertilized with four rates of N in two replications using a quick test (N-Trak) and a laboratory method. The N-Trak method overestimated soil NO3 ?-N in comparison with the laboratory method. Greater coefficients of determination were observed for soil NO3 ?-N analyses at postseeding compared with seeding.  相似文献

Some plants respond to Fe‐deficiency stress by inducing Fe‐solubilizing reactions at or near the root surface. In their ability to solubilize Fe, dicotyledonous plants are more effective than monocotyledonous plants. In this study we determined how representative plants differ in their response when subjected to Fe‐deficiency stress in a calcareous soil and in nutrient solutions. Iron‐inefficient genotypes of tomato, soybean, oats, and corn all developed Fe chlorosis when grown in soil, whereas Fe‐efficient genotypes of these same species remained green. The same genotypes were grown in complete nutrient solutions and then transferred to nutrient solutions containing N (as NO3 ) and no Fe.

The T3238 FER tomato (Lycopersican esculentum Mill.) Fe‐efficient) was the only genotype that released significant amounts of H from the roots (the pH was lowered to 3.9) and concomitantly released reductants. Under similar conditions, Hawkeye soyhean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] released reductants but the solution pH was not lowered. Both Fe‐inefficient and Fe‐efficient genotypes of oats (Avena sativa L.) and corn (Zea mays L.) released insufficient H or reductant from their roots to solubilize Fe; as a result, each of these genotypes developed Fe‐deficiency (chlorosis).

The marked differences observed among these genotypes illustrate the genetic variability inherent within many plant species. A given species or genotype may accordingly not be adapted to a particular soil. Conversely, a given species or genotype may be found (or developed) that is precisely suited for a particular soil. In this event, the need for soil amendments may be reduced or eliminated.  相似文献

The effects on nitrification and acidification in three subtropical soils to which (NH4)2SO4 or urea had been added at rate of 250 mg N kg−1 was studied using laboratory-based incubations. The results indicated that NH4+ input did not stimulate nitrification in a red forest soil, nor was there any soil acidification. Unlike red forest soil, (NH4)2SO4 enhanced nitrification of an upland soil, whilst urea was more effective in stimulating nitrification, and here the soil was slightly acidified. For another upland soil, NH4+ input greatly enhanced nitrification and as a result, this soil was significantly acidified. We conclude that the effects of NH4+ addition on nitrification and acidification in cultivated soils would be quite different from in forest soils. During the incubation, N isotope fractionation was closely related to the nitrifying capacity of the soils.  相似文献

Sources of competition for limited soil resources, such as nitrogen (N), include competitive interactions among different plant species and between plants and soil microorganisms (microbes). To study these competitive interactions, blue oak seedlings (Quercus douglasii) were grown alone or grown together with an annual grass, wild oats (Avena barbata) in pots containing field soil. We injected 15N-labeled ammonium, nitrate or glycine into the soil of each pot and harvested plants 5 days later. Plant shoots and roots, soil microbial N and soil KCl-extractable N were analyzed for 15N content. When oak and grass were grown together, 15N recovery from the inorganic N treatments (NH4+, or NO3) was 34, 9 and 4% for the grass, microbes and oak seedlings, respectively, and only 1% remained as KCl-extractable N. 15N recovery from the glycine treatment was 18, 22, 5% for the grass, microbes and oak seedlings, respectively, and 4% remained as KCl-extractable N. When oaks were grown alone, 15N recovery by soil microbes was 21, 48 and 40% in the NO3, NH4+ and glycine treatments, respectively. N forms had no effects on 15N recovery in oak seedlings (7%) and in KCl-extractable N pool (13%). In general, total N recovery by the grass was much greater than by oaks. However, on a fine root surface area or length basis, oaks exhibited higher N uptake than the grass. Our results suggest that the high rooting density and rapid growth rate of the annual grasses such as Avena barbata made them superior competitors for available soil N when compared to blue oak seedlings and to microbes. Soil microbes were better competitors for organic than inorganic N when annual grasses were present, but preferred NH4+ when competing only with oak seedlings.  相似文献

The effectiveness of eight chemical extraction methods was evaluated on 15 Indian soils for the prediction of plant-available potassium (K+) to Sudan grass (Sorghum vulgare var. sudanensis) grown in modified Neubauer technique. Average amounts of soil K+ extracted were in descending order: Morgan’s reagent > 0.5 M sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) > neutral 1N ammonium acetate (NH4OAc) > 1N nitric acid (HNO3) > 0.02 M calcium chloride (CaCl2) > 0.1N HNO3 > Bray and Kurtz No.1> distilled water. The highest simple correlation with plant K+ uptake was obtained with NH4OAc-K+ (r = 0.866**) and the lowest with CaCl2-K+ (r = 0.45*). To develop the predictive models using stepwise regression, plant K+ uptake was used as the dependent variable and the extractable soil K+, pH, sand, silt and organic carbon (C) contents as the independent variables. Based on the final R2, the NH4OAc model was found to be the best predictor of plant-available K+ in the soils when used along with sand and organic C.  相似文献

Increased above‐ground dry matter and grain yields were found for two hydroponically grown maize hybrids (Pioneer‐3925 and Pioneer‐3949) when plants were supplied with an NH4 +‐enhanced nutrient solution (31 percent of total N) compared with a control (4 percent of total N as NH4 +). The major difference in yield developed between silking and 2 weeks post‐silking and silking and 4 weeks post‐silking for the P‐3925 and P‐3949 respectively. The reduced nitrogen content of the stover (leaves plus stalk) was consistently higher on the NH4 +‐enhanced nutrient solution. The decreased production of the control treatment may have resulted from a reduced photsynthetic capacity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Plant nitrogen (N)-acquisition strategy affects soil N availability, community structure, and vegetation productivity. Cultivated grasslands are widely established to improve degraded pastures, but little information is available to evaluate the link between N uptake preference and forage crop biomass. Here an in-situ 15N labeling experiment was conducted in the four cultivated grasslands of Inner Mongolia, including two dicots (Medicago sativa and Brassica campestris) and two monocots (Bromus inermis and Leymus chinensis). Plant N uptake rate, shoot- and root biomass, and concentrations of soil inorganic-N and microbial biomass-N were measured. The results showed that the root/shoot ratios of the dicots were 2.6 to 16.4 fold those of the monocots. The shoot N concentrations of the dicots or legumes were 40.6% to 165% higher than those of the monocots or non-legumes. The four forage crops in the cultivated grassland preferred to uptake more NO3?-N than NH4+-N regardless of growth stages, and the NH4+/NO3? uptake ratios were significantly lower in the non-legumes than in the legumes (p < 0.05). Significant differences in the NH4+-N rather than NO3?-N uptake rate were observed among the four forages, related to plant functional types and growth stages. The NH4+ uptake rate in the perennial forages exponentially decreased with the increases in shoot-, root biomass, and root/shoot ratio. Also, the plant NH4+/NO3? uptake ratio was positively correlated with soil NH4+/NO3? ratio. Our results suggest that the major forage crops prefer to absorb soil NO3?-N, depending on soil inorganic N composition and belowground C allocation. The preferential uptake of NO3?-N by forages indicates that nitrate-N fertilizer could have a higher promotion on productivity than ammonium-N fertilizer in the semi-arid cultivated grassland.  相似文献

Limited research has been conducted on how atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) affects water and soil nitrogen (N) transformation in wetland ecosystems. A stable isotope technique is suitable for conducting a detailed investigation of mechanistic nutrient transformations. Nutrient ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4 input in culture water under elevated CO2 (700 μL L?1) and ambient CO2 (380 μL L?1) was studied to analyze N transformations with N blanks for both water and soil. It was measured by 15N pool dilution using analytical equations in a riparian wetland during a 3-month period. Soil gross ammonium (NH4 +) mineralization and consumption rates increased significantly by 22% and 404%, Whereas those of water decreased greatly by??57% and??57% respectively in enriched CO2. In contrast, gross nitrate (NO3 ?) consumption and nitrification rates of soil decreased by??11% and??14% and those of water increased by 29% and 27% respectively in enrichment CO2. These may be due to the extremely high soil microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), which increased by 94% in elevated soil. The results can show when CO2 concentrations are going to rise in the future. Consequently soil microbial activity initiates the decreased N concentration in sediment and increased N concentration in overlying water in riparian wetland ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract

The technique of simultaneous quantitative determination of mineral N soil forms (nitrates, exchangeable and non‐exchangeable ammonium, and total amount of these compounds) and sample pretreatment for the analysis of 15N:14N ratio is suggested. The technique is based on the selective association of NH4 +‐ions into indophenol complex and subsequent ethyl‐acetate extraction of this complex from solution. The mineralization of indophenol is carried out in alkaline medium with simultaneous NH3 distillation into H2SO4 titrant. The application of given technique allows us to shorten significantly the time required for analysis and to increase the accuracy of analytical determination.  相似文献

In the symbiosis between nodulated legume roots and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, the C and N economy can be influenced by the source of N-supply from either AM-derived NH4+ uptake or nodule-derived biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). This relationship was investigated in terms of NH4+ supply and BNF by the two symbionts. Nodulated Phaseolus vulgaris seedlings with and without AM, were hydroponically grown with either 0 N or 1 mM NH4+ supply. Plants were harvested at 30 days after emergence and measurements were taken for biomass, N2 fixation, photosynthesis, CO2 and O2 root respiration, calculated C and N economy. AM roots had higher NH4+ uptake and this was associated with the suppression of BNF and nodule growth. The higher NH4+ uptake in AM roots occurred with lower root maintenance respiration, compared to when N was derived from BNF. There was also an increase in the below-ground sink strength of NH4+ fed AM roots compared to NH4+ fed non-AM roots, as evidenced by the increases in root CO2 and O2 respiration and photosynthetic stimulation. These results indicate that although the AM root had higher total below-ground respiratory costs during NH4+ nutrition, there were lower respiratory C costs associated with N derived from AM symbionts in comparison to N from BNF.  相似文献

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted on Maury silt loam soil (Typic Paleudalf) during 2 years to determine the effects of rate of nitrapyrin and source of N fertilizer on soil pH and response of burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.cv.xKy‐14'). All sources of N were applied at the rate of 280 kg N ha‐1. The information was needed to increase the efficiency of N fertilizer use and improve the growth and safety of tobacco.

Results indicated that application of a NO3 source of N fertilizer or low rates of nitrapyrin (0.56 to 2.24 kg ha‐1) decreased surface soil acidification and the concentration of plant Mn, while plant dry weight early in the growing season was increased. The early growth benefits noted for .nitrapyrin did not lead to increased cured leaf yields or value. Cured leaf yield and value were highest in plots receiving Ca(NO3)2, followed by KH4NO3, then urea.

Concentration of protein N, total alkaloids, and total volatile nitrogenous bases of cured leaves increased and NO3 ‐N decreased as rate of nitrapyrin increased. Total N concentration of cured leaf, however, was not significantly affected by nitrapyrin application, indicating that the proportion of absorbed N as NH4 +increased as nitrapyrin rate increased.  相似文献

Agricultural systems that receive high amounts of inorganic nitrogen (N) fertilizer in the form of either ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3) or a combination thereof are expected to differ in soil N transformation rates and fates of NH4+ and NO3. Using 15N tracer techniques this study examines how crop plants and soil microbes vary in their ability to take up and compete for fertilizer N on a short time scale (hours to days). Single plants of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Morex) were grown on two agricultural soils in microcosms which received either NH4+, NO3 or NH4NO3. Within each fertilizer treatment traces of 15NH4+ and 15NO3 were added separately. During 8 days of fertilization the fate of fertilizer 15N into plants, microbial biomass and inorganic soil N pools as well as changes in gross N transformation rates were investigated. One week after fertilization 45-80% of initially applied 15N was recovered in crop plants compared to only 1-10% in soil microbes, proving that plants were the strongest competitors for fertilizer N. In terms of N uptake soil microbes out-competed plants only during the first 4 h of N application independent of soil and fertilizer N form. Within one day microbial N uptake declined substantially, probably due to carbon limitation. In both soils, plants and soil microbes took up more NO3 than NH4+ independent of initially applied N form. Surprisingly, no inhibitory effect of NH4+ on the uptake and assimilation of nitrate in both, plants and microbes, was observed, probably because fast nitrification rates led to a swift depletion of the ammonium pool. Compared to plant and microbial NH4+ uptake rates, gross nitrification rates were 3-75-fold higher, indicating that nitrifiers were the strongest competitors for NH4+ in both soils. The rapid conversion of NH4+ to NO3 and preferential use of NO3 by soil microbes suggest that in agricultural systems with high inorganic N fertilizer inputs the soil microbial community could adapt to high concentrations of NO3 and shift towards enhanced reliance on NO3 for their N supply.  相似文献

Ammonium and nitrate are the major forms of nitrogen (N) present in tropical soils. An experiment was conducted to assess the influence of nitrate and ammonium forms (NO3?, NH4+, and mix of NO3? + NH4+), and levels (1.5–12.0 mM) of N on the growth and nutrition of cacao (Theobroma cacao L). Growth parameters were significantly influenced by N forms, and nitrogen supplied as NH4+ proved better for the growth of cacao compared with NO3? form and mixtures of these two forms. Irrespective of the forms of N, levels of N had no significant effect on plant growth parameters. Nutrient efficiency ratios (NERs) (shoot dry matter produced per unit of nutrient uptake) for macronutrients were sulfur>phosphorus>calcium>magnesium>nitrogen>potassium (S>P>Ca>Mg>N>K) and for micronutrients NERs were in the order of copper>boron>zinc>iron>manganese (Cu>B>Zn>Fe>Mn).  相似文献

Abstract

Laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effects of rate of nitrapyrin and soil pH on nitrification of NH4 + fertilizer in soil, and growth and chemical composition of burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. ‘KY ‐14'). Such experiments were needed to develop information for increasing efficiency of N fertilizer use and to lessen the fertilizer‐induced soil acidity and salt effects on tobacco plants.

Results for laboratory and greenhouse incubations indicated that nitrification proceeeded slowly below pH 5.0 and the nitrapyrin necessary to delay nitrification increased with both increasing soil pH and length of incubation time. Generally, nitrification could be delayed 30 days by nitrapyrin rates of 0.25 or 0.5 μg g‐1 regardless of soil pH. but rates of 1 μg g‐1 nitrapyrin or higher were required for 60 days and longer incubation times, particularly at higher soil pH.

Growth and morphology of tobacco plants were either unaffected, or affected positively, by low rates of nitrapyrin (up to 2 μg g‐1). However, rates of 4 μg g‐1 and above reduced total plant dry weight, reducing sugars and contents of mineral elements. Concentrations and content of plant NO3 N and Mn were greatly decreased by application of nitrapyrin. Values for most parameters measured increased with increasing soil pH. The data show that low rates of nitrapyrin may be used to alter the ratio of NO3 to NH4 + N absorbed by tobacco and possibly improve growth and safety of tobacco.  相似文献

Nitrification inhibitors can effectively decrease nitrification rates and nitrous oxide(N2O)emission while increasing crop yield under certain conditions. However, there is no information available on the effects of nitrification inhibitors and tillage practices on N2O emissions from maize cropping in Iran.To study how tillage practices and nitrapyrin(a nitrification inhibitor)affect N2O emission,a split factorial experiment using a completely randomized block design with three replications was carried out in Northeast Iran, which has a cold semiarid climate. Two main plots were created with conventional tillage and minimum tillage levels, and two nitrogen(N)fertilizer(urea)management systems(with and without nitrapyrin application)were created as subplots.Tillage level did not have any significant effect on soil ammonium(NH4+)and nitrate(NO3-)concentrations,cumulative amount and yield-scaled N2O emission, and aboveground biomass of maize, whereas nitrapyrin application showed significant effect.Nitrapyrin application significantly reduced the cumulative amount of N2O emission by 41%and 32%in conventional tillage and minimum tillage practices, respectively.A reduction in soil NO3-concentration by nitrapyrin was also observed. The average yield-scaled N2O emission was 13.6 g N2O-N kg-1N uptake in both tillage systems without nitrapyrin application and was significantly reduced to 7.9 and 8.2 g N2O-N kg-1N uptake upon the application of nitrapyrin in minimum tillage and conventional tillage practices, respectively.Additionally, nitrapyrin application increased maize biomass yield by 4%and 13%in the minimum tillage and conventional tillage systems, respectively. Our results indicate that nitrapyrin has a potential role in reducing N2O emission from agricultural systems where urea fertilizers are broadcasted, which is common in Iran due to the practice of traditional farming.  相似文献
