1. Carcass fat distribution and meat quality were studied in 52‐d‐old cockerels of the 4th generation of selection for low ('lean') or high ('fat') abdominal fat content.

2. Compared with lean birds, there was four times more abdominal fat, 2.8 times more subcutaneous fat and 1.5 times more fat deposited between the leg muscles in fat birds. Chemical estimation of the fat content of thigh muscle, however, revealed no difference between these two lines.

3. No clear differences were observed for cooking losses, flavour and juiciness, while tenderness appeared to be a little higher in fat birds.

4. These results suggest that breeding for a low abdominal fat depot is advantageous in terms of carcass quality.  相似文献

1. Corticosterone (680 μg/kg body weight per day) given as six daily injections to 3‐ or 7‐week‐old chicks decreased weight gain, but increased food consumption, abdominal fat pad weight, skin dry matter, relative liver size and liver fat concentration.

2. Time of day of injection did not modify the response to corticosterone of 3‐week‐old chicks kept under natural daylight nor of 7‐week‐old broilers receiving additional illumination.

3. Pure White Rock chicks and Cornish x White Rock crossbred chicks responded similarly to corticosterone injections at 3 weeks of age.

4. Seven‐week‐old female birds treated with corticosterone had significantly larger abdominal fat pads than similarly treated males.

5. Corticosterone injection was more effective in increasing the proportion of liver fat in 7‐week‐old birds than in 3‐week‐old ?hicks.

6. The increased amount of abdominal and liver fat due to corticosterone injections administered at 3 weeks of age disappeared after 3 weeks, but growth depression was still evident.  相似文献

1. Two lines of broiler breeders were selected for three generations using a high (fatty line) or a low (lean line) ratio of abdominal fat to live weight as criterion in males at 9 weeks of age.

2. The heritability of this character remained high in both lines.

3. By the third generation, the progress achieved was much more marked in males than in females. The difference between the females of both lines was nevertheless significant.

4. The differences between the two lines were already discernible at 4 weeks of age.

5. Selecting for low or high abdominal fat content was accompanied by a better food conversion ratio in males of the lean line.

1. Two environmentally controlled houses at 21°‐30°‐21°C (HT) and 21°C (LT) were used to study the effect of temperature on fatty acid composition of the abdominal fat of male and female broilers fed 13.8 and 13 MJ ME/kg diets and slaughtered at 34 and 54 d.

2. Extracts from the abdominal fat of 160 carcases and of the experimental foods were analysed for fatty acids by gas liquid chromatography.

3. Birds reared in HT had a significantly lower proportion of polyun‐saturated fatty acids (PUFA) in their abdominal fat between 34 and 54 d than birds in LT. The depot fat contents of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids were all reduced by HT at 54 d.

4. For broilers slaughtered at 54 d, saturated fatty acid (SFA) content was much higher in females at high temperatures than in males while at low temperatures PUFA, especially linoleic, was much lower in males than in females.

5. Early finishing of broilers is advantageous from the viewpoint of fatty acid composition because the PUFA/SFA ratio declines significantly with age regardless of temperature.  相似文献

1. A caliper technique for estimating the amount of abdominal fat in live broilers is described.

2. Sixty‐three male and 47 female broilers sampled at 63 d of age from an unselected control line were used to examine the accuracy of the caliper measure in predicting abdominal fat.

3. Phenotypic correlations between caliper measure and the proportion of abdominal fat were + 0.80, +0.79 and +0.81 in males, females and the heaviest 20% of males respectively.

4. The application of the technique as an indirect means of selecting for decreased abdominal fat in commercial broiler breeding programmes is discussed.  相似文献

1. Four populations—two that had undergone 37 generations of selection for high (HH) and low (LL) body weight, and reciprocal crosses between them (HL and LH) were fed two diets differing in protein and energy. Diet A, under which selection had been made, contained 200 g protein and 11.23 MJ/kg. Diet E contained 240 g protein and 13.16 MJ/kg.

2. Body weight and feed efficiency were measured weekly from hatch to 56 d of age at which time oesophagus, abdominal fat pad, heart, liver and lungs were removed and weighed. At 35 d of age chicks were inoculated with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) and antibody titre was measured 6 d later.

3. Chicks fed diet E were heavier than those fed diet A. HH chicks were heavier dian LL chicks wim HL and LH chicks intermediate to the parental lines. LH chicks were heavier than HL ones reflecting large maternal effects.

4. Food efficiencies among stocks and diets were consistent with those for body weight, with HH > LH > HL > LL and E > A. Relative differences between diets were similar across ages and heterosis for food efficiency was about 15%.

5. Relative to body weight, oesophagus and liver weights were heavier in chickens fed diet A than fed diet E. The pattern reversed for abdominal fat pad.

6. Antibody to SRBC antigen was greater in the crosses than in line HH and in cross HL than line LL, with heterosis of 70%.  相似文献

1. Male and female broilers from a male grandparent line have been selected over 8 generations on the basis of low or high plasma very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) concentration. This has given lines of lean and fat broilers.

2. Plasma VLDL concentration in the two lines has diverged steadily and showed a 7‐fold difference in the 8th generation.

3. Divergence of other traits, including abdominal and total body fat, body protein and conversion efficiencies of food and dietary protein has continued but body weight has not changed with selection.

4. Divergence of body composition and nutrient conversion relative to a commercially selected control line derived from the same origin as the experimental lines has been slightly greater for the fat line.

5. In the lean line, females have been more responsive to selection with the result that body compositions of lean line males and females at 7 weeks have become quite similar.

6. Plasma VLDL concentration decreased little in the lean line over the later generations and showed a lower phenotypic correlation with abdominal fatness than in the fat line in the 8th generation. A limit to selection for body fatness using this criterion may be approaching in the lean, but not in the fat, line.  相似文献

1. Reproductive and other characteristics were measured at 34 and 60 weeks of age in broiler breeder hens on 6 different feeding regimes. The hens came from genetically lean and fat lines selected on the basis of low or high 7‐week plasma very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) concentration.

2. Plasma VLDL concentrations were consistently higher at all ages in fat line hens but were not affected by dietary treatment.

3. Mature body weight did not differ between the lines in birds fed ad libitum but with food restriction throughout life, fat line birds were lighter at 34 weeks.

4. There was little difference between the lines in abdominal fatness of birds fed ad libitum up to 60 weeks. Fat line birds were always fatter than lean line counterparts under food restriction.

5. Egg production was higher in lean line birds fed ad libitum but food restriction improved egg production in both lines. Peak egg productions were similar in both lines but there was evidence that the optimal food allowances for egg production was higher in the lean compared with the fat line.

6. Ovarian yellow follicle numbers were highest at 34 weeks in ad libitum fed lean line birds and declined linearly with decreasing body weight caused by food restriction but there was no such relationship in fat line birds.

7. White follicle numbers were higher and follicular atresia was lower in the lean line.

8. It is concluded that poor reproduction in fat line birds was associated with inhibition of follicular development and atresia rather than by high plasma VLDL concentrations promoting excessive yolk formation.  相似文献

1. Beta‐adrenergic agonist (Clenbuterol, 0.33 mg/kg) and corticosterone (10 mg/kg) were incorporated into a diet based on maize and soyabean meal. Their effects on performance, carcase composition, hepatic microsomal mixed function oxidase and antibody production were investigated in female broilers.

2. Dietary corticosterone reduced the titre to sheep red blood cells, while it was unchanged by clenbuterol.

3. Clenbuterol exerted a promoting effect on gain‐to‐food ratio, carcase protein and hepatic microsomal cytochrome P‐450 content.

4. Addition of clenbuterol to the corticosterone‐containing diet prevented the increase in abdominal fat weight and uric acid excretion induced by corticosterone, but did not affect total fat mass.

5. The results showed that clenbuterol reduced abdominal rather than carcase fat and prevented protein degradation in the body when chicks were treated with corticosterone. Clenbuterol also influenced the content of cytochrome P‐450, but not the humoral immunity.  相似文献

1. The effects of dietary corticosterone and trilostane, an inhibitor of glucocorticoid synthesis, on: growth, rates of synthesis and breakdown of skeletal muscle protein, and content of abdominal fat were studied in broiler chickens.

2. Dietary corticosterone (5, 10 or 20 mg/kg) depressed body weight gain and increased abdominal fat content in a dose‐dependent manner while dietary trilostane (1.4 or 7.0 mg/kg) had no effect.

3. The rate of protein breakdown in skeletal muscle estimated from N‐methylhistidine excretion was increased in a dose‐dependent manner by dietary corticosterone but it was decreased by trilostane.

4. The rate of skeletal muscle protein synthesis was not affected by corticosterone although it was decreased by trilostane.

5. Plasma corticosterone concentration was increased in a dose‐dependent manner by dietary corticosterone and decreased by treatment with 7 mg trilostane/kg diet.

6. The results indicate that higher concentrations of plasma corticosterone increase protein breakdown in skeletal muscle but do not affect muscle protein synthesis while both the rates of synthesis and breakdown are decreased when plasma corticosterone concentration is reduced.  相似文献

1. The effect of food restriction on the quality of semen production and fertility in broiler breeder males was studied.

2. Seventy‐two Ross broiler breeder males, from 20 to 54 weeks of age, were divided into 4 groups and fed as follows: group 1 = 110 g/bird/d; group 2 = 120 g/ bird/d; group 3 = 130 g/bird/d; group 4 = ad libitum.

3. Body weight, sperm quality (volume, concentration, % motility and % live cells) and fertility were measured. The birds were slaughtered at 55 weeks of age; the abdominal fat pad and testicles were weighed.

4. Groups 2 and 3 produced the highest volume of semen. The quality of semen was very similar in all the restricted groups.

5. Males fed ad libitum produced semen with the best motility and percentage of live cells. Groups 3 and 4 showed the best fertility percentage (79%) against group 1 and 2 (59 and 72% respectively).  相似文献

1. The relationships between plasma very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) plus low density lipoprotein (LDL) triglyceride concentrations at 3 and 7 weeks of age and body fat content at 7 weeks were studied in male and female broiler grandparent stock fed on diets containing about 25 or 90 g fat/kg.

2. Plasma VLDL plus LDL triglyceride concentrations were similar in males and females and only slightly higher in birds fed on the high‐fat diet. Concentrations at 3 weeks were similar to those at 7 weeks.

3. Body fat content was correlated more closely with plasma VLDL plus LDL triglyceride measured at 7 weeks than at 3 weeks.

4. Phenotypic correlations between body fat content and plasma VLDL plus LDL triglyceride concentrations at 7 weeks were 0.47 and 0.43 for males and females respectively fed on the high‐fat diet and 0.70 and 0.60 for males and females fed on the low‐fat diet.

5. Phenotypic correlations between body fat content and measurements with an abdominal caliper were 0.35 and 0.49 in birds fed on the high‐ and low‐fat diets respectively.

6. A possible procedure for selecting for leanness in broiler breeding programmes on the basis of measurements of plasma VLDL plus LDL triglycerides is discussed.  相似文献

1. Chicks of a light‐bodied strain were deprived of food on alternate days from 15 to 46 d of age.

2. Hyperphagia, amounting to twice the intake of control birds early in the experiment, occurred on the repletion day.

3. Final body weight attained 80% of that of the controls.

5. A consistent hyperlipaemia was observed after food deprivation or restoration.

6. There was a marked increase in the digestive enzymes found in the small intestine, but not in the pancreas during the repletion day.

1. A food restriction study in conjunction with light control was conducted with commercial broiler chicks in a tropical environment.

2. Chicks on treatments 1 and 2 were fed continuously while those on treatments 3 and 4 were fed during the day (from 06.00 h to 18.00 h) and night (from 18.00 h to 06.00 h) respectively. Chicks on treatment 1 received only natural light during the day, while those on treatments 2, 3 and 4 received supplementary lighting during the night in addition to natural light during the day.

3. Food consumption by birds on treatment 2 was significantly higher at 56 days of age, followed by birds on treatments 1, 4 and 3.

4. The pattern of body weight gains was similar to the order of food consumption.

5. Efficiency of food utilisation was poorest for birds on treatment 2.

6. Mortality rates were not influenced significantly by the feeding regimen and lighting pattern.

1. Three trials were performed to examine the effect of degree of fatness in broilers on the composition of carcass fat. The various degrees of fatness were obtained by varying the energy to protein (E :P) ratios in conventional diets.

2. Increasing the E : P ratio caused increased fat deposition with increases in the proportions of palmitic and oleic acids and a decrease in linoleic acid.

3. Highly significant negative correlations were obtained between the degree of fatness (expressed as percentage of dry matter of the skin) and of unsaturation of abdominal fat (expressed as iodine value).

4. The same negative correlations were obtained for individuals within the same dietary treatment, especially those producing lean birds.  相似文献

1. Effects of food restriction on growth rate and relative growth rates of supply organs (liver, heart, lungs and kidneys, digestive tract) and demand organs (breast, back, thighs, abdominal fat) of broiler chickens were studied.

2. Birds were restricted in intake to 50% (group FI 50) or 75% (group FI 75) of ad libitum from 5 to 11 d of age; all birds were fed ad libitum from 12 to 39 d of age.

3. Relative growth rates from 12 to 39 d of age of group FI 50 were higher (P<0.05) than group FI 75 and control group.

4. No significant differences in food conversion ratio, carcase fat and abdominal fat between groups were observed.

5. At 12 d of age, relative weight of the empty digestive tract of group FI 50 was higher (P< 0.05) than that of the control group and group FI 75.

6. The increased weight of the empty digestive tract may have contributed to the ability of the chickens to achieve compensatory growth after the restriction period.  相似文献

1. Three sire lines of Pekin duck, three dam lines and 9 crosses between these two groups were tested in replicated tests from 1987 to 1991. Body weight at the age of 7 weeks (n = 5189), carcase percentage, percentage of abdominal fat and thickness of breast muscles were recorded (n = 1432 for carcase traits).

2. The data were analysed by linear models. All models contained the factors test and sex. When analysing only crosses, general and specific combining abilities (GCA and SCA respectively) were included as well as their interactions with the test. Using the complete data set (lines and crosses), direct genetic and heterotic effects were considered.

3. The factors test and sex were significant in both data sets for all traits.

4. For body weight, all genetic factors were significant. The average heterosis was 65 g ± 9 g (2.2%); the highest observed heterosis was 7.7%.

5. For carcase percentage, the heterosis was always negative (up to — 2.1%), whereas in abdominal fat, a desirable negative heterosis was observed only in one cross. No significant heterotic or combining ability effects were observed in the thickness of breast muscles.

6. Significant interactions between at least one genetic factor and test were found in all traits.

7. The relative importance of GCA and SCA, possible sources of confounding estimates of genetic effects, the importance of heterotic effects and genotype × environment interactions are discussed.  相似文献

1. Plasma growth hormone (GH) pulsatility and hepatic GH receptor characteristics were compared in experimental lines of meat‐type chickens selected for high (HF) or low (LF) abdominal fat content.

2. Mean GH concentration, baseline and amplitude of pulses were slightly, but not significantly, greater in LF chickens. Length and frequency of pulses were similar.

3. LF chickens exhibited higher plasma triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations. This difference between genotypes disappeared when the diet was supplemented with 1 mg/kg T3.

4. Specific binding of GH to liver membranes was higher for the fat line but was depressed by T3 supplementation to the same level in both lines. No difference was observed between lines for affinity constants.

5. It is concluded that direct selection for leanness has a less pronounced, if any, effect on GH pulsatility as compared with selection for food conversion efficiency; therefore, different physiological mechanisms are triggered to achieve leanness.  相似文献

1. The effects of age and sex on the proximate composition and inorganic constituents in edible offal and whole blood from a commercial British broiler chicken strain were studied.

2. Although the protein content of all tissues varied with age, the only statistically significant effect was on the level of protein in the gizzard.

3. The moisture content of the gizzard was significantly affected by age and blood by age and sex.

4. The fat content of the gizzard was significantly affected by age, as was the effect of sex on the fat content of blood.

5. The ash contents of heart and gizzard were significantly affected by age.

6. The phosphorus contents of the gizzard, heart and liver were significantly affected by age, as were the chloride content of heart and the calcium content of the liver. Blood potassium was significantly affected by sex. Fluctuations in the contents of other elements are discussed.

7. The variability in organ composition is discussed with respect to the degree of trimming and preparation of the samples.  相似文献

1. The significance of fat accumulation during physiological development of layers was studied using White Leghorn x Australorp pullets from 12 weeks of age.

2. Liver fat, carcass fat, liver weight and body weight increased markedly at the onset of sexual maturity.

3. Within the liver, the protein to DNA ratio did not alter significantly during development; glycogen was not consistently depleted by egg production.

4. Liver fat content was significantly correlated with carcass fat, liver weight and DNA concentration, and plasma total lipid and cholesterol, independent of stage of development; with body weight, liver protein, moisture, and protein to DNA ratio, excluding the period prior to commencement of sexual maturation; and with plasma phospholipid during lay.

5. Obesity was a feature of faster growing fowls which matured earlier, consumed more, utilised food less efficiently for egg production and produced fewer saleable eggs.  相似文献
