The sea urchins Psammechinus miliaris and Paracentrotus lividus were fed three macroalgal diets with varying protein content over a 90-day period. These diets were the red alga Palmaria palmata, which had been grown in seawater enriched with two levels of ammonia-N and contained a protein content of either 41% (High-N) or 32% (Low-N) and the brown alga Laminaria saccharina (23% protein). A significantly different response to the macroalgal diets by the two sea urchin species was found in terms of food consumption rate, food conversion efficiency, gonadal growth and gonad nutritional composition. P. miliaris was able to efficiently utilise the High-N P. palmata, whereas P. lividus exhibited a higher food conversion efficiency (FCE) and specific growth rate (SGR) when fed the Low-N compared with the High-N P. palmata. P. miliaris had a significantly higher food consumption rate and higher gonad index (GI) compared with P. lividus, irrespective of diet type. The lowest FCE, SGR and GI were shown by both species fed L. saccharina. No interspecific difference in gonadal nitrogen content was observed, although a positive relationship was shown between dietary and gonadal nitrogen content for both species. All three macroalgal diets produced bright orange or yellow orange gonad colour in P. lividus. High-N and Low-N P. palmata improved gonad colouration in P. miliaris compared with L. saccharina. The results suggest that P. miliaris can efficiently assimilate high protein plant-based diet, whereas P. lividus is less capable of benefiting from high dietary protein levels and this should be taken into consideration when culturing this species either in land-based or sea-based polyculture systems.  相似文献

The aim of the presented investigation was to test the sensibility of macroalgal aquaculture in offshore wind farms in the North Sea and to find arguments for the choice of appropriate sites among the planned wind farms. Based on experience with an offshore aquaculture farm of Laminaria saccharina conducted in 2002, we assessed the maximum hydrodynamic forces affecting farmed algae by applying the model software “WaveLoad”. Drag measured in a towing tank was considerably higher on algae with a more ruffled margin and wider blade collected from sheltered environments than on flat and narrow farmed Laminaria despite comparable blade areas. Drag varied according to frond size, current velocity and acceleration reaction. Dislodgement of laminarian holdfasts and the forces necessary to break the stipe depended on blade length and surface area. Neither did our measured nor our calculated values of drag exceed those forces, provided the algae had been grown in a current > 1 m s 1. Even in storm conditions with maximum current velocities of 1.52 m s 1 and wave heights of up to 6.4 m can cultivated L. saccharina withstand the high energy environment.  相似文献

Transmission electron microscopy was applied to sperm removed from males and females belonging to Litopenaeus vannamei, L. stylirostris and L. occidentalis. It was discovered that a region named filamentous meshwork (FM), located between the nucleus and the hemispherical cap, develops differently in these three closely related species. In L. vannamei, the FM is synthesized in the male reproductive system, but seems to complete its formation after mating. In L. stylirostris, the FM region was not present in spermatophores collected from males or in sperm from the thelycum. In L. occidentalis, the FM region is fully developed in male sperm. It is suggested that completion of the FM is required for acrosome maturation, and the process continues after mating in some species of Litopenaeus. In vitro induction of the acrosome reaction in sperm from males and females of L. occidentalis demonstrated for the first time that reactivity is significantly superior in sperm cells that have been attached to the open thelycum for some hours, as compared to sperm in males (prior to transfer). This finding suggests that matured sperm cells of L. occidentalis become capacitated to react against egg water after mating.  相似文献

To study fisheries impact at the species level in temperate sandy bottom areas, a controlled field manipulation experiment was designed focusing on areas with high densities of the habitat-structuring, tube-dwelling polychaete Lanice conchilega (i.e. L. conchilega reefs). The hypothesis was that the impact on L. conchilega would be minimal, but that the fauna benefiting from the biogenically structured habitat would be impacted by beam-trawling. In this study, the impact of beam-trawl passage on intertidal L. conchilega reefs and its associated fauna was quantified. A treatment zone was exposed to a one-off experimental trawling. Subsequently, the impact on and recovery of the associated fauna was investigated for a period of 9 days post-impact. Community analysis showed a clear impact followed by a relatively quick recovery as apparent through MDS analysis (stress 0.06), a significant (p < 0.001) IMS of 0.61, through ANOSIM analysis: significant (p = 0.001) dissimilarities between treatment and control and through SIMPER analysis (decreasing dissimilarities over time). This impact and subsequent recovery was largely explained by two species: Eumida sanguinea and Urothoe poseidonis. Species analysis confirmed the beam-trawl passage significantly (p = 0.001) impacted E. sanguinea for the whole period of the experiment. The experiment confirmed that closely associated species of L. conchilega reefs are impacted by beam-trawl fisheries. This small-scale intertidal study provides some pointers which indicate that the tightly associated species will be impacted significantly when beam-trawling L. conchilega reefs in subtidal areas.  相似文献

Abstract. The stages of development leading to sporogenesis of Ceratomyxa shasta (Noble) were investigated by light and electron microscopy. Salmonid fishes were infected by exposing them to water containing the infectious stage and intestinal material was fixed at weekly intervals. Signs of intestinal infection were barely detectable by 7 days following exposure where trophozoites and later developmental forms were present, but by 14 days a large number of pansporoblasts could be detected in varying stages of development. By 21 days the majority of caeca were completely occluded and infection had spread throughout the connective tissues attached to the caeca.
The early developing trophozoites contained two or more nucleated cells within a mother cell. There was some evidence of multiplication of nuclei by fission. The sporoblasts usually contained twelve nucleated cells that gave rise to two groups of six cells (sporonts) and resulted in the formation of two spores in each mother cell. Each spore was formed by two sets of bilaterally arranged cells consisting of the main germinative cell or sporoplasm, the anteriorly placed capsule cells and the outer envelope or spore valve cell that surrounded the others and formed the spore covering.
As the spore matured the two germinative cells interacted with each other by pseudopodial extensions and appeared to fuse to form a diploid cell. The position of the cells laterally and slightly posteriorly to the central suture line formed a bilaterally curved spore. Mature spores when examined with the electron microscope were condensed, dark staining and relatively featureless, with a lateral measurement of 15 μm and an anterior-posterior measurement of 7μm.  相似文献

采用叶绿素荧光技术,以光系统Ⅱ最大荧光产量(Fv/Fm)为指标,结合形态显微观察,研究了GeO2在海带幼孢子体培育过程中菱形藻污染的抑制效应。结果表明,1)对于菱形藻,当GeO2浓度在5mg/L以上时,对其Fv/Fm值有显著影响,达到或超过15mg/L时菱形藻趋于死亡。2)对于海带幼孢子体,GeO2浓度在20mg/L以上时,对其Fv/Fm值有显著影响,达到或超过30mg/L时其趋于死亡。3)对于受到菱形藻污染的海带幼孢子体,GeO2浓度在15mg/L以上时对其Fv/Fm值有显著影响,达到或超过20mg/L时其趋于死亡。综合来看,当GeO2浓度为5~15mg/L时,菱形藻光合作用受到较强的抑制,而对海带幼孢子体影响不大。  相似文献

Oogenesis of abalone Haliotis discus hannai was examined histologically during a single spawning season using broodstock of various maturation conditions, which were controlled by effective accumulative temperature (EAT). The quality of eggs spawned was determined in relation to oogenesis. For histological examinations, three to five females were sacrificed at 300, 600, 850, 1050, and 1150 °C days EAT, without induction of artificial spawning. Other females were successfully induced to spawn at 700 °C days EAT and were reared following spawning. Three of these females were then sacrificed every 200 °C days EAT until 1300 °C days EAT. Gonad histology showed that two oocyte cohorts matured in H. discus hannai ovaries during a single spawning season. One mature oocyte cohort could be spawned in multiple times. The second oocyte cohort started developing after the first oocyte cohort had been spawned or reabsorbed, and became fully mature 400 °C days EAT after the first cohort was depleted. For egg quality measurements, three to five females were successfully induced to spawn at 850, 1050, 1150, 1900, and 2350 °C days EAT (Experiment 1). Three females were induced to spawn twice, at 700 and 1500 °C days EAT, resulting in two batches of eggs from the same individuals (Experiment 2). Total lipid and protein content of eggs were measured and were greater in eggs from the second cohort than in eggs from the first cohort. No carbohydrates were detected in eggs and there was no difference in cytoplasm volume between the two cohorts. In hatcheries producing H. discus hannai, it is important to increase post-larval starvation tolerance by increasing the quality of eggs, to yield higher and more consistent survival. The results of this study suggest that H. discus hannai hatcheries should use eggs from the second oocyte cohort, which are of higher quality, rather than eggs from the first oocyte cohort.  相似文献

Blood metabolites in wild and seventh-generation cultivated shrimp were measured to determine how size-based selection could alter the nutritional and immunological conditions of Litopenaeus vannamei. Wild L. vannamei juveniles and a sample of seventh-generation cultured shrimp were acclimated under identical conditions. During 55 days, shrimp were fed a high (HCHO: 44%) or a low (LCHO: 3%) carbohydrate diet for 55 days. Wild shrimp showed a direct relation between dietary CHO and lactate, protein and hemocyte levels indicating that dietary CHO was used for protein synthesis via transamination pathways. In seventh-generation cultured shrimp these parameters were inversely proportional to dietary CHO level, indicating the capacity to synthesize protein from dietary CHO was repressed in cultured shrimp. Farmed shrimp showed a limited capacity to respond to LCHO diets demonstrating high protein dependence in their metabolism and immune response. These results demonstrate that during size-based breeding programs other metabolic process than CHO catabolism can be selected. The incapacity of shrimp to use dietary CHO could limit protein reduction of diets and limit the efforts of the shrimp industry to be ecologically and environmentally profitable.  相似文献

The effects of body weight, water temperature and ration size on ammonia excretion rates of the areolated grouper Epinephelus areolatus and the mangrove snapper Lutjanus argentimaculatus were investigated. Under given experimental conditions, L. argentimaculatus had a higher weight-specific ammonia excretion rate than E. areolatus. Weight-specific ammonia excretion rates of fasted individuals of both species showed an inverse relationship with body weight (W, g wet wt.), but a positive relationship with water temperature (t, °C). The relationships for total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) were: E. areolatus: TAN (mg N kg−1 d−1)=21.4·exp0.11t·W−0.43 (r2=0.919, n=60); L. argentimaculatus: TAN (mg N kg−1 d−1)=121.5·exp0.12t·W−0.55 (r2=0.931, n=60). Following feeding, the weight-specific ammonia excretion rate of E. areolatus increased, peaked at 2 to 12 h (depending on temperature), and returned to pre-feeding levels within 24 h. A similar pattern was observed for L. argentimaculatus, with a peak of TAN excretion being found 6 to 12 h after feeding. Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that weight-specific TAN excretion rates of both species increased with increasing temperature and ration (R, percent body wt. d−1): E. areolatus: TAN (mg N kg−1 d−1)=22.8·t−28.8·R−378.2 (r2=0.832, n=24); L. argentimaculatus: TAN (mg N kg−1 d−1)=22.9·t−25.4·R−216.4 (r2=0.611, n=24). The effect of body weight on weight-specific postprandial TAN excretion was not significant in either species (p>0.05). This study provides empirical data for estimating ammonia excretion of these two species under varying conditions. This has application for culture management.  相似文献

This contribution aims at the assessment of the sustainability of a management plan for Lessonia nigrescens in Chilean coastal ecosystems, specially when the harvest pressure could be increased due to that this macroalgae is considered as a food source for the abalon (Haliotis discus hannoi) farming along the Chilean coast. Three qualitative conceptual models were developed and compared; the first and second ones assuming homogeneous and heterogeneous environmental conditions, respectively, and the third expanded one considering eco-social components under the assumption of environmental heterogeneity. For all these models, the factors described by Vásquez [Bot. Mar. 38 (1995) 251] were included in the management plan for the harvesting of brown macroalgae. Based on Levins's Loop Analysis, the system will have a just weakly unstable moving equilibrium if the harvesting activities do not negatively affect the macrophyta's reproduction and recruitment processes. Therefore, coincidence of reproduction and/or recruitment with harvesting must be avoided in a putative management plan. Regarding the qualitative predictions of the system's behaviour after negatively affecting reproduction and recruitment, only an ecological model assuming a heterogeneous environment shows realistic responses in comparison to experimental studies on the same species. This contribution is the first approach considering the dynamical behaviour of L. nigrescens and its surroundings. Nevertheless, further models, based on the same modelling theory, may integrate more variables from social and economical fields in order to improve the scope of this complex system. Further comparative studies should focus on the assessment of the significance of the structural functions of L. nigrescens and other macroalgae for the conservation of this benthic system.  相似文献

Field-collected tetrasporophytes of Palmaria palmata were tumbled in 300-L outdoor tanks from January to August at ambient daylength or in a constant short-day (SD) regime (8 h light per day), both at 10 or 15 °C. Tetrasporangia were massively induced after 2.5 months under SD conditions at 10 °C and completely lacking at 15 °C, both under SD or ambient daylength conditions, with a few tetrasporangia present at 10 °C and ambient daylength. Elongation rates of tagged tetrasporophytic thalli peaked from March to April in all four conditions, when the biomass densities in the outdoor tanks were close to 2.5 kg fresh weight m− 2. Under all four conditions, juvenile proliferations started to appear in June from the margins of the old fronds, and attained approximately 1 cm in length by the end of July.Approximately 80% of the tetraspores were released during the first three dark phases in a light/dark regime, and the remaining 20% during the light phases. A minimum of 10 min darkness was observed to trigger spore release. White light inhibited tetraspore release, while a similar number of spores were released in continuous red light or in the light/dark regime, although with no significant differences of spore release during subjective days and nights.Sporelings were successfully derived from the released tetraspores for mass propagation of the male gametophyte in 2000-L outdoor tanks in a greenhouse. Mass production of male gametophytic sporelings of P. palmata was completed two times by SD induction of tetrasporangia at 10 °C, release of spores in darkness and culturing the sporelings until they were ready to be propagated vegetatively in greenhouse tanks. One experiment lasted from January to October 2001, with spore release in June, and the second from September to April 2003, with spore release in January. These results may support the development of sustainable, year-round Palmaria farming.  相似文献

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is one of the most important pathogens of penaeid shrimp. It is widely distributed in most Asian countries where penaeid shrimp are cultured, as well as in the Gulf of Mexico and SE USA. The virulence of six geographic isolates of WSSV was compared using Litopenaeus vannamei postlarvae and Farfantepenaeus duorarum juveniles. The six geographic isolates of WSSV originated from China, India, Thailand, Texas, South Carolina, as well as from crayfish maintained at the USA National Zoo. For challenge studies, virus infected tissues were given per os to L. vannamei postlarvae and Fa. duorarum juveniles. Resultant WSSV infections were confirmed by histological examination. The cumulative mortality of L. vannamei postlarvae reached 100% after challenge with each of the six geographic isolates of WSSV. However, the Texas isolate caused mortalities more rapidly than did the other shrimp isolates; the crayfish WSSV isolate was the slowest. In marked contrast, cumulative mortalities of juvenile Fa. duorarum reached only 35–60%, and varied among the geographic isolates of WSSV. Interestingly, in Fa. duorarum, the Texas WSSV isolate was also the most virulent, while the crayfish WSSV was the least virulent. The findings suggest that slight differences in virulence exist among geographic isolates of WSSV, and that susceptibility may vary with species and lifestages of the host.  相似文献

American lobsters, Homarus americanus, have been successfully reared in hatchery operations for over a century, yet formulated diets have never been commercially produced. In recent years, commercial Artemia replacement (CAR) diets have been developed and marketed for use in aquaculture production of marine shrimp. Three separate experiments assessed the utility of rearing American lobsters on these shrimp CAR diets. First, survival and growth of stage IV American lobsters fed one of three CAR diets (Artemac 5, CAR1; Economac 4, CAR2; and Progression 3, CAR3) were compared to those of animals fed frozen adult n-3 fatty acid enriched Artemia. Survival to 3 months was highest for animals fed CAR3 (85%), while animals fed Artemia had the greatest weight gain (> 6 % day− 1). A cost / benefit ratio analysis showed that CAR2 was the most cost efficient for juvenile production because of its low overall purchase cost. Second, stage IV lobsters were fed either CAR2 or frozen adult n-3 fatty acid enriched Artemia exclusively, or in combination (2 : 5, and 5 : 2). Again, CAR2 was a cost effective feed to use, even as a partial replacement for Artemia. Survival was higher in diets that included CAR2, and feeding it two days per week compensated for low quality Artemia. Finally, 1.5 year old lobsters fed a gelatin-bound mix of 80% CAR2 and 20% frozen Artemia for five months survived and grew equally well compared to lobsters fed gelatin-bound frozen adult Artemia, and better than a custom formulated maintenance diet. The benefits of incorporating formulated feeds into American lobster rearing programs to increase the effectiveness of enhancement programs is discussed.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the active components of soybean lecithin for juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei. The first experiment was conducted to determine the dietary phosphatidylcholine (PC) requirement of juvenile L. vannamei, and to investigate whether other phospholipids (PL), mainly phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) were the active fractions of soybean lecithin. Seven levels of PC (0%, 0.35%, 0.7%, 1.4%, 2.1%, 2.8%, 4.2%) extracted from soybean lecithin (PC purity 93%) were used to determine the PC requirement; also, PE and PI (in a 25:22 proportion) were tested at 0.84% and 1.68% levels with PC levels controlled at 0.35% and 0.52% of diet to investigate the combined PE and PI effects. Results showed that no dietary PC requirement was evident based on shrimp growth and survival. Increasing purified PC in the diet decreased total lipid, free fatty acid and other PL levels in shrimp hepatopancreas (mid-gut gland) and increased PC level in shrimp muscle. However, other PL, mainly PE and PI, showed significant enhancing effects on shrimp growth when PC was provided at 0.35% or 0.52% of diet.

Another 4×2 factorial experiment was concluded to reevaluate the requirement of shrimp for PC by including purified PC at 0%, 0.7%, 1.4 % and 2.8% of diet with or without 0.1% cholesterol in the diet. A diet containing 1.4% PC provided by deoiled lecithin also was tested for comparison. Results showed no interaction between PC and cholesterol on shrimp growth, survival and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Compared with the apparent growth-enhancing effect of dietary cholesterol, the effect of purified PC was negligible. With PC at 1.4% of diet, the presence of other PL from lecithin or 0.1% cholesterol significantly enhanced shrimp growth and FCR.

In summary, purified soybean PC showed different effects from deoiled lecithin on shrimp growth, lipid composition, and relationship with dietary cholesterol. Beneficial effects of soybean lecithin on growth of L. vannamei could be attributed to the presence of PL other than PC in the diet under the experimental conditions of this study.  相似文献

In the Ivory Coast, grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) have been integrated in the tilapia-based polyculture in order to increase pond productivity. In the tropical conditions prevailing there, female cycles seemed disrupted. We describe oogenesis in these conditions using histological observations, monitoring of individual cycles with intraovarian biopsies, endocrinal monitoring (development of a specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for vitellogenin (Vg), measurement of plasma oestradiol-17β (E2) and testosterone (T)) and comparison with grass carp raised in Poland. We noted that oogenesis was blocked in all females at the migrating germinal vesicle stage, precluding ovulation or spawning without artificial induction. High rates of atypical post-vitellogenic oocytes (translucent, not filled with yolk granules) were observed in many females. Female individual cycles also displayed atypical features: cycles were sometimes (10% of females) blocked at the beginning of vitellogenesis (BV), for females displaying abnormally low E2 (0.5 ng/ml) and Vg (30 μg/ml) levels compared to “normal” females (1.4 ng/ml and 223 μg/ml, respectively). The duration of the cycles was highly variable among females (a few days to several weeks). Sexual cycles were unsynchronised (all the ovarian stages could be found for all seasons) and the number of females at the end of vitellogenesis (EV) was low (<40% most of the year). These characteristics raise problems for artificial induction of spawning in small-scale hatcheries: a large stock of broodfish is required as is regular checking of female broodstock with intraovarian biopsies to select responsive females.  相似文献

The culture of seahorses has usually relied on cultured live foods or collected wild live foods as feed. This can be expensive in the case of culturing live foods and unreliable in the case of harvesting wild live foods. This investigation examined whether juvenile Hippocampus abdominalis from 0 to 2 months of age could be experimentally weaned onto frozen (Cyclop-eeze copepods) and artificial (Golden Pearls) food over 30-day periods with Artemia as a live food control, with 0-, 5-, 10-, and 20-day mixed feeding periods. Newborn juveniles could not be weaned onto Golden Pearls, with almost complete mortality. One-month-old juveniles could be weaned onto Cyclop-eeze with no effect on survival but with lower growth. One-month-old juveniles could be weaned onto Golden Pearls but with lower survival and lower growth. Two-month-old juveniles could be weaned onto Cyclop-eeze but with lower survival and lower growth. Two-month-old juveniles could be weaned onto Golden Pearls with no effect on survival but with lower growth. In all experiments, the rate of feeding strikes on Cyclop-eeze and Golden Pearls was lower than that on Artemia (e.g. range of mean 0.16–0.97 vs. 2.2–2.76 feeding strikes/min), both when Artemia were the sole food presented and when Artemia were cofed with the nonlive foods. However, mixed feeding Artemia with nonlive foods did appear to increase the rate of feeding strikes on nonlive foods. These results indicate the potential for incorporating more cost effective and reliable nonlive foods into seahorse culture.  相似文献

The single and combined effects of external bag size and external bag mesh size upon the collection and retention of wild King Scallop spat (Pecten maximus L.), other scallop species (Aequipecten opercularis) and other animal groups were investigated in a collection area off the west coast of Scotland. Collection was assessed after 5 weeks and at harvest (after 20 weeks). After 5 weeks, 90% of collected animals consisted of scallops (P. maximus and A. opercularis), Mytilus edulis (Mollusca: Bivalvia) and Lacuna vincta (Mollusca: Gastropoda). One-way analysis of variance on count data obtained after 5 weeks showed that the larger bag and mesh size treatments had collected significantly greater numbers of scallop spat when numbers collected were compared to the quantity of material used for each treatment (P<0.05). This was partly attributed to significantly greater numbers of L. vincta crawling juveniles temporarily recruiting in the smaller bag and mesh treatments (P<0.05). Similar trends of spat abundance in treatment bags were observed at harvest, although all treatments had scallop spat retention efficiencies of less than 12%. The importance of the structural design of spat bags for spat collection and the effects of incidentally collected non-predatory species upon the collection of scallop spat are discussed.  相似文献

L. vannamei postlarvae are normally raised with a protein dense diet (50% protein) rich in fishmeal. Part of the protein is utilized for energy purpose instead of protein synthesis. Based on a previous energy partitioning study, the effects of two isoenergetic compounded feed treatments – animal protein (AP) and vegetable protein and carbohydrates (VPC) – upon growth efficiency and energy budget of shrimp postlarvae and early juveniles were determined. Recovered energy (RE) or production (P) after 50 days trial was similar (2 J day 1) in both treatments, from PL14 to PL19. However, early juveniles discriminated between animal protein (116 J day 1) and vegetable protein and carbohydrates (88 J day 1). The difference in respiration indicated a higher heat increment with AP compared to VPC. At maintenance level, energy used was lower with AP than VPC treatment. Postlarvae and early juveniles employed protein as a main energy substrate (O:N < 20). Differences in the efficiencies observed in the calculated energy budget were attributed to the presence of carbohydrates in diet and not to the protein source. The advantage of incorporating vegetable protein source in the diet of harvesting shrimp may eventually contribute towards a reduction of fishmeal costs and waste products as well as to achieve sustainable shrimp farming.  相似文献

以鼠尾藻Sargassumthunbergii幼孢子体为材料,研究了Cu2+对不同生长时期的鼠尾藻幼孢子体生长的影响。不同生长时期的鼠尾藻幼孢子体对微量Cu2+都是敏感的。对于早期的鼠尾藻幼孢子体,5μg/L以上浓度的Cu2+对其正常生长不利;当Cu2+浓度达到或超过250μg/L时,该时期幼孢子体基本停止生长。对于后期的鼠尾藻幼孢子体,10μg/L以上浓度的Cu2+对其正常生长不利;1μg/L浓度的Cu2+对其生长有促进作用;当Cu2+浓度达到或超过50μg/L时,该时期幼孢子体增长缓慢或基本停止生长。鼠尾藻幼孢子体的假根由于结构和功能特性,对Cu2+的敏感程度不大,Cu2+处理初期依然表现出快速增长。  相似文献

Duplicate groups of 1-year-old Atlantic salmon were exposed to 5–7 weeks of short days (LD 8.15:15.45) with artificial light, followed by a period of continuous light (LL) for 3 months (A), 2 months (B) or 1 month (C) before transfer to sea cages. Duplicate groups were also exposed to a 2-week period of LD 8.15:15.45, followed by a period of continuous light for 2 months (D). Comparisons were made with fish that were reared under natural light conditions from October onwards (F) and continuous light (E) only. Fish from all groups were transferred to sea cages on 9 June and their survival and growth were monitored until 31 October. There was a significant (P < 0.001) interaction between light regime and time for all smolt characters measured. Development of smolt colouration, decrease in condition factor, increases in gill Na-K-ATPase activity and the ability to regulate plasma Na+ after 24 h in full-strength sea water, indicated that the fish in groups A, B and C completed smoltification 6–8 weeks after the end of the short-day periods. No decrease in the condition factor was recorded for fish in groups D and E. The mortality was 40% for group A and 34% for group B, and 15% or less for the other groups. Groups A and B had probably lost some of the smolt characters by the time of seawater transfer. The specific growth rate in sea water was 1.5% for group F and for the survivors of groups A and B, 1.4% for group C and 1.2% for groups D and E. In conclusion, a short-day regime of 5–7 weeks, followed by continuous artificial light, caused smolt-related changes similar to those found in outdoor-reared fish, whereas this was not so for fish exposed to either a short-day period of only 2 weeks or to continuous artificial light.  相似文献
