Shoot blights are common diseases of peach trees in Greece. This study is the first report of a shoot blight and canker disease of peach in Greece caused by the fungus Phoma glomerata (Corda) Wollenw. & Hochapfel. The pathogen caused distinct cankers with abundant gumming on shoots of peach trees. The rate of development of P. glomerata in vitro was reduced as temperatures increased from 25°C to 30°C, decreased from 25°C to 15°C, and was totally inhibited at 35 and 10°C. The rate of conidial germination and the germ tube elongation in vitro was reduced as temperatures increased from 25°C to 35°C, decreased from 25°C to 10°C, and was totally inhibited at 2–4°C. Pathogenicity tests showed that 24 peach and nectarine cultivars grown in Imathia Perfecture, Greece, were equally susceptible to P. glomerata. The fungicides thiophanate methyl, carbendazim, and tebuconazole were evaluated against the development of P. glomerata and disease symptoms. All fungicides inhibited the growth and conidial germination of P. glomereta and disease symptoms, and all 30 isolates tested were sensitive to the above fungicides. The disease caused by P. glomerata could be a threat to peach cultivation in Greece and its management should be investigated in the field.

The influence of constant temperatures on biological parameters of German strains of Trichogramma aurosum Sugonjaev & Sorokina (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was evaluated in the laboratory on eggs of Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Development time and longevity of all strains were decreased as temperature increased. Development time of the strains differed significantly only when exposed to 15°, 20°, and 25°C. Cumulative fertility and longevity differed significantly at 15° and 20°C. Realized fertility differed significantly at all constant temperatures. Emergence rates of all strains were less than 65% and were decreased even further as temperature increased. Female-biased sex ratio ranged from 65% to 100% at all constant temperatures. The low temperature threshold for T. aurosum was 10°C and the mean number of degree-days at 15°, 20°, 25° and 30°C was 175, 183, 173 and 185, respectively. The Bavarian strain tolerated high temperatures and had the highest parasitization capability, while the Hessian strain had the lowest parasitization at all temperatures. Fertility life table analysis revealed a major effect of temperature on the population growth parameters. Net reproductive rate was highest at intermediate constant temperatures in all strains, with the highest rate recorded for the Bavarian strains at all constant temperatures. Mean cohort generation time, and population doubling time decreased as temperature increased. The daily intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were positively correlated with temperature. The relevance of our results is discussed in the context of climatic adaptation, intraspecific variability and biological control.

BACKGROUND: Resurgence of insect pests following insecticide applications is often attributed to natural enemy disturbance, but hormesis could be an alternative or additional mechanism. Green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), is an important insect pest of many crops worldwide that may be exposed to sublethal insecticide concentrations over time. Here, the hypothesis that exposure to low concentrations of imidacloprid and azadirachtin can induce hormetic responses in M. persicae is tested in the laboratory. RESULTS: When insects were exposed to potato leaf discs dipped in sublethal concentrations of insecticide, almost all measured endpoints—adult longevity, F1 production, F1 survival and F2 production—were affected, and a statistically significant (P < 0.05) stimulatory response was recorded for F2 production following exposure to imidacloprid. No other measures for hormesis were statistically significant, but other trends of hormetic response were consistently observed. CONCLUSIONS: Given that variable distribution and degradation of insecticides in the field would result in a wide range of concentrations over time and space, these laboratory experiments suggest that exposure to sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid and azadirachtin could stimulate reproduction in M. persicae. Leaf spot of tomato, incited by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, has been reported recently in Italy on grafted and non-grafted tomato plants (scion Cuore di Bue, rootstock Solanum lycopersicum x Solanum hirsutum cv. Beaufort). In some greenhouses, more than 80% of plants were affected, with a marked reduction in yield. This work was undertaken in order to understand the effect of the number of hours of incubation at high relative humidity (r.h.) and temperature as well as the effect of the presence of wounds at infection time on the development of leaf spot. A difference in sensitivity to leaf spot was observed in the various cultivars tested, in terms of severity of P. syringae pv. syringae, with “Cuore di Bue” being the most susceptible of these cultivars. The development of leaf spot is mostly favored by the presence of wounds, at temperatures between 15 and 20°C. The severity of the disease is lower at 10 and 25°C and very low at 30°C. Under the most favorable temperature conditions, the presence of wounds is sufficient to allow the development of the pathogen immediately upon incubation at high r.h. The effect of wounds and the relatively low requirement of hours of incubation at high r.h. suggest the need for careful management and handling of plants when temperatures range between 15 and 25°C, and particularly within 15 and 20°C. All operations carried out, particularly at transplant and immediately after, should avoid the creation of wounds.

The development ofBracon vulgaris Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), parasitoid of the cotton boll weevilAnthonomus grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), was studied at constant temperatures of 18, 20, 23, 25, 28, 30, 33, 35 and 38°C, 70±10% r.h. and 14:10 L:D period. The period from egg to adult ofB. vulgaris varied from 8.6 (35°C) to 32.9 days (18°C). The eggs of this parasitoid became desiccated and did not hatch at 38°C. The lower development threshold (LDT) and thermal constants for development varied withB. vulgaris instar, but they were similar for males and females. The duration of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4thB. vulgaris instars required, respectively, 9.36 degree-days above one LDT=12.27°C, 13.48 degree-days above one LDT=6.83°C, 11.65 degree-days above one LDT=9.41°C, and 12.82 degree-days above one LDT=10.78°C.B. vulgaris has physiological adaptations to different threshold temperatures and it shows high potential to be used againstA. grandis in cotton crops.

The toxic effects of six acylurea insecticides on larvae of the tobacco hornworm were investigated at each of four environmental temperatures (20, 25, 30 and 35°C). This spans the range of temperatures which the insects can tolerate. For all the acylureas tested, mortality increased with temperature when either newly hatched or fourth-instar larvae were given insecticide in their food. Sub-lethal growth inhibition also became more pronounced at progressively higher environmental temperatures. This temperature dependence of acylurea action was not due to altered uptake of the insecticide, since there was no significant variation with temperature in the amount of [14C]flufenoxuron taken up by fifth-instar larvae when given a single meal containing labelled insecticide. Additionally, mortality of fourth-instar larvae given a single intra-haemocoelic injection of flufenoxuron was significantly greater at higher temperatures, implying that temperature affects a process that occurs after insecticide uptake. The intrinsic ability of acylureas to inhibit chitin synthesis is temperaturesensitive, since flufenoxuron inhibited the incorporation of [14C]N-acetylalucosamine into chitin by proleg epidermis in vitro significantly less well at 20°C than at the higher temperatures tested. However, there was no significant variation between the effectiveness of in-vitro chitin synthesis inhibition at 25, 30 and 35°C. These data show that the effectiveness of acylurea insecticides is subject to strong temperature effects in the range of temperatures likely to be experienced in the field.

Permethrin at concentrations as high as 10?6 had no detectable effect upon neuromuscular transmission at 20-21°C in the body-wall muscles of susceptible larvae of Lucilia sericata and susceptible and resistant (kdr) strains of larvae of Musca domestica. At the higher concentrations of 5 × 10?6M, muscle cells in all strains and species of larva were slowly depolarised, resulting in failure of neuromuscular transmission when the level of depolarisation corresponded with the peak height of the postsynaptic potentials. Multiple postsynaptic potentials were sometimes obtained in response to a single electrical stimulus to the motor axon. Neither of these effects is considered to result from interference with release of the neurotransmitter or its binding to the postsynaptic receptors. Spontaneous activity in sensory nerve fibres from susceptible larvae was increased followed by intermittent bursting and block at concentrations of permethrin as low as 10?9M at 20-21°C and 10?10 at 26°C. Resistant larvae of M. domestica were 1000 times less sensitive, needing concentrations of permethrin as high as 10?6M at 20-21°C and 10?7M at 26°C to affect sensory discharge. The results are discussed in relationship to the cause of knockdown by pyrethroid insecticides and to possible changes in the nervous system which may be brought about by the kdr resistance factor.

The development time, survivorship and reproduction ofTuberolachnus salignus (Gmelin) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) [Lachninae, Lachnini] were studied onSalix babylonica (weeping willow) andSalix matsudana (corkscrew willow) at five constant temperatures (17.5, 20, 22.5, 25 and 27.5°C). The development time of immature stages ofT. salignus ranged from 14.56 days at 17.5°C to 12.50 days at 25°C onS. babylonica, and 16.47 days at 20°C to 12.28 days at 25°C onS. matsudana. The total survivorship of immature stages ofT. salignus varied from 28% to 85% at 22.5 and 17.5°C, respectively, onS. babylonica, and from 13% to 63%, respectively, at 17.5 and 25°C onS. matsudana. The greatest intrinsic rate of increase occurred at 25°C onS. babylonica (0.2691) and also onS. matsudana (0.2607). The mean generation time of the aphid population ranged from 14.15 days at 25°C to 16.24 days at 17.5°C onS. babylonica, and from 14.33°C days at 25°C to 19.86 days at 20°C onS. matsudana. The optimal temperature forS. babylonica growth, development time, reproduction and percent survival was 25°C.

BACKGROUND: Cardamom, an important spice crop often attacked by many insect pests, is controlled mainly using synthetic insecticides. As honey bees play a vital role in pollination in cardamom, the impact of insecticides on honey bees needs to be explored to assess its safety. RESULTS: Risk assessment based on contact toxicity revealed diafenthiuron to be a non‐selective insecticide to bees with a low selectivity ratio (the ratio between the LD50 for beneficial and pest species). A dose of diafenthiuron that killed 90% of cardamom borer, Conogethes punctiferalis Guenee, was found to kill 100% of Indian bees. Based on the hazard ratio (the ratio between the field‐recommended dose and the LD50 for the beneficial), diafenthiuron was found to be slightly to moderately toxic to bees. Diafenthiuron, even at low concentrations of LC1 (the concentration that killed 1% of bees), was found to affect the foraging and homing behaviour of Indian bees. Of bees fed with 30 µg mL?1 of diafenthiuron, 40% were found missing on the third day after exposure. However, diafenthiuron did not affect bee visits to the cardamom fields. CONCLUSION: Diafenthiuron is more highly toxic to Apis cerana indica F. than to C. punctiferalis by contact, using selectivity ratio and probit substitution methods of risk assessment, but the hazard ratio revealed diafenthiuron to be a slightly to moderately toxic chemical. Diafenthiuron was found to affect the foraging and homing behaviour of bees at sublethal concentrations. Thus, sublethal effects are more relevant in risk assessment than lethal and acute effects. The effects of temperature, free moisture duration and inoculum concentration on infection caused byPseudomonas syringae pv.syringae (Pss), on sweet cherry (Prunus avium) were investigated. Epiphytic populations ofPss are an important source of inoculum for bacterial canker and it has been demonstrated that a cyclic pattern exists during the year, from undetectable during the warm and dry periods to large populations following cool and wet periods. The effects of temperature and inoculum concentration on the infection caused byPss on immature fruits and 1-yr-old twigs were significant (P<0.001). Fruit and twig infection increased linearly in proportion to the logarithm ofPss when bacterial concentrations were higher than 103 cfu ml−1 and temperatures were between 5 and 20°C. Regardless of the inoculum concentration and the free moisture duration, fruit and twig infection was either absent or low at 5°C but it increased linearly as temperature increased from 5 to 20°C. Growth ratein vitro was very slow (0.03–0.04 cfu h−1) at 5°C and fast (0.21–0.23 cfu h−1) at 20°C. Therefore, it is possible that multiplication of the epiphytic populations may be significantly reduced in the field with air temperatures below 5°C. A significant (P<0.001) effect of free moisture was obtained only when a low inoculum concentration (103 cfu ml−1) was used, and a significant linear response between free moisture and disease incidence was obtained only at 10°C. An apparent threshold population ofPss higher than 103 cfu ml−1 was needed to infect immature fruits and 1-yr-old twigs of sweet cherry. http://www.phytoparasitica.org posting July 10, 2002.

Western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a quarantine pest of cherries (Prunus spp.) in western North America that is managed primarily using insecticides. Different insecticides could vary in efficacy and ability to control flies depending on environmental factors. Here, the objective was to determine if temperature and food availability affect the efficacies of spinosad and malathion against R. indifferens in the laboratory. Fourteen- to 18-day old flies were exposed to sweet cherries with dried residues of spinosad and malathion at 19 or 21 versus 27 °C with or without yeast extract + sucrose food (‘food’). Deaths and oviposition were recorded over four days. In spinosad treatments, fly kill was greater at 27 °C than at lower temperatures when there was no food, but in the malathion treatments, kill did not differ between temperatures and it was greatest when there was no food. In spinosad treatments, lower oviposition occurred at 19 or 21 °C than 27 °C, with differences larger when there was food. However, in malathion treatments, oviposition was not affected by temperature although it was lower when there was no food. Results imply temperature and food availability could be factors affecting R. indifferens control in cherries, but whether temperature is such a factor depends on the insecticide used.

Sweet basil white mould (BWM, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) and grey mould (BGM, Botrytis cinerea) are important diseases in Israel and other basil‐growing regions. The impact of microclimate on BWM and BGM and on plant sensitivity to these diseases was studied. Disease incidence was evaluated in three field experiments, each consisting of 10–12 polyethylene‐covered tunnels. BWM and BGM incidences were correlated with air temperature, relative humidity (RH) and soil temperature data. The incidence of BWM was negatively correlated with high (above >25 or >30 °C) air temperatures, RH > 50% and RH > 75% and high (>21 or >24 °C) soil temperatures. BGM incidence was negatively correlated with high (>25 °C) air temperatures and high (>21 or >24 °C) soil temperatures, and positively correlated with RH >65% or >75%. Shoots harvested from plants grown in the walk‐in tunnels were inoculated with S. sclerotiorum or B. cinerea under controlled conditions. Severity of BWM and BGM on those shoots was negatively correlated with tunnel air temperatures of >25 and >30 °C and soil temperatures >18 °C. Thus, high temperatures were related to reduced disease incidence and to reduced sensitivity to the pathogens. Experiments involving potted plants revealed that heating only the root zone suppresses canopy susceptibility to BWM and BGM. These findings indicate that the effect of high greenhouse temperatures involves an indirect systemic effect that renders the host less susceptible to disease. This effect was also observed in harvested shoots that were no longer at the high temperatures, and the effect was systemic.

The white peach scale (WPS),Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targioni-Tozzetti) (Homoptera: Diaspididae), is a worldwide polyphagous scale insect. It is widely distributed in Turkey, where it is the main pest of peach trees. The development and fecundity ofP. pentagona were examined at different temperatures and on different hosts in the laboratory; from these data, life tables were constructed and intrinsic rates of increase were calculated. The longevity of WPS decreased with a rise in temperature. At 25°C the largest number of crawlers (76.1 crawlers/female) was observed. The development time of WPS was generally longer on peach than on squash or potato; fecundity was higher on potato than on the other hosts, potato tubers and peach trees.

Development duration and reproduction rate of the twospotted spider miteTetranychus urticae Koch (Acarina: Tetranychidae) were studied on five different apple cultivars (‘Amasya’ (local cultivar), ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Granny Smith’, ‘Starking Delicious’ and ‘Starkrimson Delicious’) at 25°C, 65±10% r.h. and 16:8 L:D. In addition, the same parameters were determined on Golden Delicious leaves at three constant temperatures (20°, 30° and 35°C, 65±10% r.h. and 16:8 L:D) in the laboratory.T. urticae performed better on Granny Smith than on the other cultivars, due mainly to high daily egg production (4.6 eggs/♀/day) and the intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m , which was 0.243 ♀/♀/day). The lowestr m was observed on Amasya variety (0.231 ♀/♀/day). Development periods of immature stages ofT. urticae varied from 6.5 to 15.5 days at 35° and 20°C, respectively, for females, and from 5.9 to 14.5 days at 35° and 20°C, respectively, for males. The development thresholds of the eggs and pre-adult stages, respectively, were 10.78° and 8.43°C, and total effective temperatures were 57.80 and 172.41 degree-days. Mean generation time (T o ) of the population ranged from 9.94 days at 35°C to 25.99 days at 20°C. The net reproduction rate increased from 66.99 ♀/♀ at 20°C to 92.19 ♀/♀ at 25°C, and decreased to 84.34 ♀/♀ at 30°C and to 12.04 ♀/♀ at 35°C. The highest r m occurred at 30°C (0.302 ♀/♀/day) and the lowest at 20°C (0.161 ♀/♀/day). http://www.phytoparasitica.org posting Dec. 19, 2003.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hot water (HW), antagonists and sodium bicarbonate (SBC) treatments applied separately or in combination to control Monilinia spp. during the postharvest storage of stone fruit. Firstly, we investigated the effect of HW temperatures (55–70°C) and exposure times (20–60 s), seven antagonists at two concentrations (107 or 108 cfu ml−1) and four SBC concentrations (1–4%). The selected treatments for brown rot control without affecting fruit quality were HW at 60°C for 40 s, SBC at 2% for 40 s and the antagonist CPA-8 (Bacillus subtilis species complex) at 107 cfu ml−1. The combinations of these treatments were evaluated in three varieties of peaches and nectarines artificially inoculated with M. laxa. When fruit were incubated for 5 d at 20°C, a significant additional effect to control M. laxa was detected with the combination of HW followed by antagonist CPA-8. Only 8% of the fruit treated with this combination were infected, compared to 84%, 52% or 24% among the control, CPA-8, and HW treatments, respectively. However, the other combinations tested did not show a significant improvement in effectiveness to control brown rot in comparison with applying the treatments separately. When fruit were incubated for 21 d at 0°C plus 5 d at 20°C, the significant differences between separated or combined treatments were reduced and generally the incidence of brown rot was higher than when fruit were incubated for 5 d at 20°C. Similar results were observed testing fruit with natural inoculum.

Powdery mildew is an important disease of rubber trees worldwide. To assess the effects of temperature and leaf age on conidial germination and disease development, conidia were inoculated onto rubber tree seedlings with leaves at three phenological stages (copper bronze, colour-changing, and light green) and then incubated at six constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35°C). Leaf age did not affect conidial germination (p = .296) whilst temperature did (p < .0001), although conidia were able to germinate at all tested temperatures. The estimated optimal temperature for conidial germination was 23.2°C. Leaf age, temperature, and their interactions had significant effects on conidial infection and hypha number (p < .0001). At 10 and 35°C, more than 2 and 4 days were needed for infection to complete, respectively, compared to <2, 1, 0.5, and 0.5 days for 15, 20, 25, and 35°C, respectively. Sporulation and mildew symptoms were only observed on those inoculated leaves of all stages at 20 and 25°C, and at the copper bronze stage only at 15°C. The latent period on the copper bronze leaves at 15°C was longer (9 days) than at 20 and 25°C (4 days). The latent period at 20 and 25°C increased from 4 to 7 days as the leaf development stage increased from copper bronze to light green. Therefore, temperature affected germination and postgermination growth of rubber tree powdery mildew, whereas leaf age primarily affected postgermination growth of the pathogen.

Abstract

Flue‐cured Virginia (f.c.v.) tobacco grown on deltaic islands or lankas in the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh, India is subject to heavy infestations of green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulz. The relative efficacy of granular formulations of the systemic insecticides phorate, disulfoton, carbofuran, aldicarb and terbufos in controlling the aphid, and their effect on the yield and quality of lanka tobacco have been studied. Aldicarb granules at 1 g/plant and disulfoton at 2 g/plant were found to be the most effective in controlling the aphid, and also resulted in higher yields of green leaf, cured leaf and total bright leaf equivalent (an index of visual quality). Terbufos at 2 g/plant also gave good yields, but was slightly less effective in controlling aphid infestations. Carbofuran at 3 g/plant was the least effective. The chemical quality of f.c.v. tobacco was not affected by the application of granular insecticides to the soil.
