ABSTRACT

Aquaculture produce in Asian countries contributes a major share to total global fish production. However, disease due to biotic and abiotic factors results in considerable losses to the industry. The most frequently encountered bacterial agents associated with fish diseases in tropical environments are Vibrio sp. in marine and brackish-water systems and motile aeromonads in freshwater systems. Virulence mechanisms of these bacterial species have been widely studied. Though a few viral agents such as rhabdovirus, reo-like virus, infectious pancreatic necrosis virus, picornavirus, and irido-like virus have been recorded in different parts of Asia, such reports are scanty. Among fungal pathogens, Aphanomyces invaderis is the most virulent and has been reported to be associated with epizootic ulcerative syndrome. Other fungal agents such as Achlya sp. and Saprolegnia sp. have been recorded in various disease conditions. In addition to various conventional microbiological and serological methods, nucleic acid-based methods are being widely adopted for diagnosis of different fish diseases. Few successful vaccines have been developed to protect against disease conditions, and some of the better known ones are against vibriosis and furunculosis. Many other vaccines are still in the experimental stages. Early diagnosis of disease and development of successful vaccines are important for the future development of aquaculture.  相似文献

Studies on bacterial abundance and diversity will improve the understanding of the microbial ecology to optimize aquaculture production, water quality, disease control and environmental impact of effluents. We comparatively evaluated an aquaculture system in dry and rainy seasons by Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) and culture‐dependent methodology. Overall, a negative correlation between seasonality in bacterial and flagellates abundance was observed. Alpha‐, beta‐, gamma‐proteobacteria and Cytophaga‐Flavobacter were observed with seasonal variation. Putative pathogenic bacteria such as coagulase‐negative Staphylococcus, non‐fermenter Gram‐negative rods (Pseudomonas sp. and Burkholderia sp.), and Enterobacteriaceae were also detected in this study with significant seasonal variation. Focusing on medically important bacteria, our data show that microbial diversity in the environment associated with aquaculture, as it is practiced, may be altered in growth ponds used for fish cultivation. As an ecological consequence, potentially pathogenic bacteria might be released in high concentrations to the downstream environments posing potential threats to human and animal health.  相似文献

Rotifers, used in aquaculture as feed for early larval stages, are poor in carotenoids compared with copepods, the natural most common prey item of marine fish larvae. A minimal sufficient level of carotenoids in fish larvae may be essential for a correct development. The freshwater microalga Muriellopsis sp. has been identified as a potential source of the carotenoid lutein with possible application in aquaculture. Lutein is a potent antioxidant, with potentially beneficial effects as a carotenoid for fish larvae. This study describes the lutein enrichment of the rotifer Brachionus sp. when incubated with homogeneously dispersed suspensions of freeze‐dried, lutein‐rich Muriellopsis sp. in seawater. A short enrichment time (2 or 2.5 h) resulted in a higher lutein content of the rotifers than a long enrichment time (13.5 or 24 h). Although the concentration of lutein in enriched rotifers, 0.06–0.16 mg (g dry weight)?1 was low compared with its content in Muriellopsis sp. [about 3 mg (g dry weight)?1], it was in the range reported for natural copepod populations. Therefore, we conclude that freeze‐dried biomass of Muriellopsis sp. can be used to enrich rotifers with lutein, providing an adequate level of this carotenoid for marine fish larvae.  相似文献

Fish farming has grown rapidly in Brazil over the last two decades, due in part to the availability of water and species with potential for cultivation, such as Colossoma macropomum. This farmed fish, however, can be affected by parasitic infections with high mortality rates (>35%). The main objective of the present study was to describe the first occurrence of the Trypanosoma species in Colossoma macropomum, which occurred in fish cultured in the Brazilian Amazon region, as well as to morphologically characterize the trypomastigotes and the impact of these hemoparasites on the body condition of the hosts. The trypanosomes found in the blood of Colossoma macropomum were morphologically characterized by the size of the trypomastigote form, indicating the presence of only one morphotype. Of the 39 hosts examined from one fish farming, 41.0% were infected by Trypanosoma sp., with low levels of infection (mean blood density of 3.7/μL). The condition factor of the asymptomatic hosts was not affected by hemoparasitism. There was no correlation between the abundance of Trypanosoma sp. and the condition factor and size of the hosts. Finally, our understanding of host-parasite interactions and the detection of emerging diseases are fundamental for aquaculture.  相似文献

Mosquitofish, Gambusia sp., have been spread throughout the world to biologically control mosquitoes. However, the fish has gained a reputation as an invasive species and has been implicated in displacing native aquatic species. Gambusia affinis are native to the southeastern United States and commonly occur in commercial channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, production ponds. We investigated effects of mosquitofish presence on zooplankton populations, water quality, disease occurrence, and fish production in experimental ponds. There were no differences between ponds with or without mosquitofish in numbers of calanoid copepods, cyclopoid copepods, total copepods, Bosmina sp., Ceriodaphnia sp., Moina sp., Daphnia sp., or total cladocerans. There were also no differences in copepod and cladoceran sizes. Copepod nauplii were more numerous during the summer months in ponds with mosquitofish. There were no differences in water quality variables (soluble reactive phosphorus, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, pH) or phytoplankton density between ponds stocked with and without mosquitofish. Catfish production and disease occurrence were also similar between ponds with and without mosquitofish. Although mosquitofish may cause problems when stocked outside their native range, there does not appear to be any adverse effects of mosquitofish presence in catfish production ponds.  相似文献

Marine periphytic cyanobacteria and diatoms have been examined as a potential source of feed supplement for rearing aquatic larvae in the aquaculture industry. Culture of the periphytic diatom Amphora sp., Navicula sp., Cymbella sp. and the cyanobacteria Oscillatoria sp. at different salinities showed significant changes in biomass and specific growth rates. Diatoms growth was significantly higher at 35 g L−1, while for cyanobacteria growth was better at 25 g L−1. Significantly higher levels of protein and lipid were found in diatoms at low salinities (15–25 g L−1) and an increase in carbohydrate at high salinities (30–35 g L−1). Conversely, cyanobacteria showed a significantly higher lipid content at 30–35 g L−1 compared with other salinity levels but no significant changes were observed in the protein and carbohydrate contents at different salinity levels. The present findings can be taken into consideration when culturing marine periphytic Amphora sp., Navicula sp., Cymbella sp. and Oscillatoria sp. to provide appropriate levels of protein, lipid and carbohydrate as feed supplement as well as for bioremediation in aquaculture.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Development of science and technology of cultured pearl production in a freshwater environment in India is described. Distribution of Indian pearl mussels, pond mussel Lamellidens marginalis, paddy field mussel L. corrianus, and riverine mussel Parreysia corrugata in relation to environmental variables such as type of soil, nature of sediment substratum, presence or absence of macrophytes (Eichhornia sp., Nechamandra sp., andNymphaea sp.) is described. Food and feeding of the mussels, together with density aspects in culture conditions are discussed. Mussel breeding including specificity in fish hosts, and mussel larval parasitic relationships are discussed. Basic steps involved in indigenous freshwater pearl culture technology are summarized. Pearl culture grafting procedures such as mantle cavity, mantle tissue and gonadal implantation along with different pearl products are also described.  相似文献

The Western Australian dhufish (Glaucosoma hebraicum), an open-water marine finfish, has been identified as a potential species for aquaculture and a 4 y research project has concentrated on broodstock collection and maintenance, spawning and larval rearing. This paper describes treatments which were developed for the ectoparasites and diseases of broodstock fish. These included bacterial and fungal infections, Cryptocaryon irritans, Haliotremasp., an unidentified axinid monogenean, the isopod Aega cyclops and copepod Caligus sp. Treatments based on betadine, formalin, freshwater, malachite green, oxytetracycline (terramycin), 2-phenoxyethanol, potassium permanganate and trichlorphon (neguvon) were all tried. The most effective treatments against parasites were a freshwater bath or a combined freshwater bath and anaesthesia with 2-phenoxyethanol. Monogeneans on the gills were difficult to control and exophthalmia was an unresolved problem.  相似文献

High mortality is common when culturing most marine fish larvae, especially during the transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding. In aquaculture, many species of marine fish are not able to survive when only fed enriched rotifers and Artemia spp. nauplii. Ciliates are a potential alternative live food organism for first‐feeding larvae, because they can grow to high population densities, accept inert diets, and are natural prey organisms of marine fish larvae. The range of culture parameters to optimize population growth of the ciliate Euplotes sp. are unknown. Five experiments were conducted to determine the effects of food concentration and abiotic factors including salinity, aeration rate, temperature and photoperiod on population growth of the ciliate Euplotes sp. Results indicated the optimal ranges for population growth of Euplotes sp. was a temperature between 26 and 32°C, salinities from 20 and 35 g/L, food (Protein Selco®) concentrations of 250 and 500 mg/million ciliates, absence of or low aeration (8.5 cm3/min) and the photoperiod 0L:24D. Euplotes sp. can tolerate high ammonia and very low dissolved oxygen concentrations, and population growth can occur in these conditions for at least 7 days.  相似文献

Seahorse aquaculture has been a focus for meeting the demand of Chinese traditional medicine and aquarium, and one of the bottlenecks for aquaculture is disease. The present study focused on the intestinal microbiota between wild and cultured seahorses. Results showed that the Alcaligenaceae and Enterobacteriaceae were the dominant intestinal flora in intestinal tracts of seahorses, and Achromobacter sp., Serratia marcescens, and Serratia sp. were the dominant intestinal flora. It was the first time that two strains (TPL14 and yb97) of Achromobacter xylosoxidans were found in cultured seahorses and even in fishes. Interestingly, Vibrio, which accounted for 19.35% of the intestinal bacterial communities, only occurred in the cultured seahorses, and it was strongly involved in the intestinal diseases in seahorse H. trimaculatus.  相似文献

The 11 marine reserves along the Leyte Gulf,Eastern Samar, Philippines were quantified interms of reef slope composition, hard coralcoverage and standing fish biomass by manta towand transect dive survey from 1998 to 1999.Based on the assessed ecological conditions(Condition Index, CI; Coral Coverage Index,CCI; Reef Condition Index, RCI; Fish Biomass)and derived ranking, suitable small-scalealternative livelihoods (aquaculture orland-based) to be implemented nearby thesereserves were discussed and developed with theinvolvement of the local stakeholders composedof fishers, farmers, Non-GovernmentOrganization and Local Government Units, in a3-day planning workshop. The reserves' RCI (0.20 to 0.40) resulted infair (9 reserves) and poor (2 reserves)conditions as indicated by 64 to 68% ofnon-living and 32 to 36% of living slopesubstrate, CI of 0.15 to 0.54, CCI of 0.15 to0.49, and fish biomass of 1.8 to19.6 t km-2. One reserve with the highestecological ranking was determined as a localmonitoring station to educate local fishers andfarmers. For other marine reserves with highecological conditions and located outer ofLeyte Gulf, the farming of Eucheuma sp.,Holothuria sp. and Pinctada sp. were suggested. While, rearing of Haliotis sp., Siganus sp., or Scylla sp. in mangrove-friendlyaquaculture systems, rice farming andeco-tourism were suggested for low rankingreserves. The potential benefits of theselivelihoods and the success in conserving themarine resources may enhance the quality oflife of the coastal populace if there is astrong multi-sectoral cooperation.  相似文献

Nocardia sp. is the causative agent of nocardiosis, a lethal granulomatous disease of the skin, muscle, and various inner tissues affecting various teleost and shellfish. Four species of Nocardia have been isolated from diseased fish and shellfish, namely Nocardia asteroides, Nocardia seriolae, Nocardia salmonicida and Nocardia crassostreae. Therefore, in fish aquaculture, nocardiosis has caused severe economic losses, especially in the Asian region. Considerable research has been performed, since the first report of identified Nocardia sp. in fish, to characterize Nocardia sp. and identify rapid detection techniques, immune response against infection and prophylactic approaches. In this review, the current state of knowledge about nocardiosis in fish has been presented, including the pathogenesis, diagnosis, host immune response and vaccine development.  相似文献

Diseases which cause skeletal muscle myopathy are some of the most economically damaging diseases in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., aquaculture. Despite this, there are limited means of assessing fish health non‐destructively. Previous investigation of the serum proteome of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., during pancreas disease (PD) has identified proteins in serum that have potential as biomarkers of the disease. Amongst these proteins, the enzyme enolase was selected as the most viable for use as a biomarker of muscle myopathy associated with PD. Western blot and immunoassay (ELISA) validated enolase as a biomarker for PD, whilst immunohistochemistry identified white muscle as the source of enolase. Enolase was shown to be a specific marker for white muscle myopathy in salmon, rising in serum concentration significantly correlating with pathological damage to the tissue.  相似文献

Amoebic gill disease (AGD) caused by the amoeba Paramoeba perurans is an increasing problem in Atlantic salmon aquaculture. In the present PCR survey, the focus was to identify reservoir species or environmental samples where P. perurans could be present throughout the year, regardless of the infection status in farmed Atlantic salmon. A total of 1200 samples were collected at or in the proximity to farming sites with AGD, or with history of AGD, and analysed for the presence of P. perurans. No results supported biofouling organisms, salmon lice, biofilm or sediment to maintain P. perurans. However, during clinical AGD in Atlantic salmon, the amoeba were detected in several samples, including water, biofilm, plankton, several filter feeders and wild fish. It is likely that some of these samples were positive as a result of the continuous exposure through water. Positive wild fish may contribute to the spread of P. perurans. Cleaner fish tested positive for P. perurans when salmon tested negative, indicating that they may withhold the amoeba longer than salmon. The results demonstrate the high infection pressure produced from an AGD‐afflicted Atlantic salmon population and thus the importance of early intervention to reduce infection pressure and horizontal spread of P. perurans within farms.  相似文献

Abstract. Columnaris disease, Flexibacter columnaris infection, was first described in North America. Recent publications indicate that its distribution is worldwide. Both warmwater and coldwater fish are infected with F. columnaris. All freshwater fish are probably susceptible to the disease under environmental conditions favourable to the bacterium and stressful to the fish. Flexibacter columnaris cannot tolerate sea water. Generally, outbreaks occur when the average water temperatures reach 15°C. The bacterium apparently enters the fish through the skin and gills. The swarms of bacteria involved give the lesions a characteristic yellow pigmentation. The external lesions destroy the skin, muscle and gill tissues. It is relatively easy to isolate the bacteria from the internal organs of the diseased fish, but there is no evidence of internal tissue damage. In this short review, emphasis is placed on several factors relative to water environment which play a role in the development of outbreaks of columnaris disease:
  • 1 The optimum temperature for an outbreak of F. columnaris infection is thought to be between 20 and 30°C. Mortalities seldom occur at temperatures below 15°C, although highly virulent strains can kill fish at lower temperatures.
  • 2 Flexibacter columnaris can survive longer in water of normal to high hardness, as well as in water containing small amounts of sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium salts, but it cannot live in sea water.
  • 3 Flexibacter columnaris grows well on paniculate fish feeds so that such deposits in the water may act as reservoirs of infection.
  • 4 An important source of infection is feral fish. In the Columbia River or the Fraser River, resident coarse fish such as suckers, Catostomus spp., are thought to transmit the infection to returning adult salmon.
  • 5 Flexibacter columnaris fails to invade fish in the presence of competitive bacteria like Citrobacter freundii when its initial numbers are approximately one in a 100 less than those of the competitors.
  • 6 Crowding seems to be not only a stressor for fish, but also a factor that increases the chance of adhesion of F. columnaris to the external tissues of fish.

Considerable losses may be related to diseases caused by parasites in aquaculture. Formaldehyde (37% gas dissolved in water) is an effective chemotherapeutic, widely used to control ectoparasites in fish. However, for many species of fish used in aquaculture, the control of external parasites and the deleterious effects of formaldehyde in short‐term baths are still uncertain. In order to clarify some gaps, 1 h‐prophylactic baths (67.5, 135, 270, 405 and 540 mg L?1 formaldehyde in triplicate) were performed in juvenile mullet, Mugil liza (Valenciennes). Results showed that prophylactic baths of 135 mg L?1 formaldehyde by 1 h did not cause death in tested mullets. At this concentration, histopathologies were mild and fish survival was high. However, fish exposed to increasing concentrations of formaldehyde presented severe histopathologies in the gills besides behavioural and morphological alterations. The histopathological and behavioural implications of formaldehyde use in aquaculture are discussed.  相似文献

A series of recent reports have implicated bacteria from the family Francisellaceae as the cause of disease in farmed and wild fish and shellfish species such as Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua L., tilapia, Oreochromis spp., Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., three‐line grunt, Parapristipoma trilineatum (Thunberg), ornamental cichlid species, hybrid striped bass Morone chrysops x M. saxatilis and, recently, a shellfish species, the giant abalone, Haliotisgigantea Gmelin. The range of taxa affected will very probably rise as it is likely that there has been considerable under‐reporting to date of these disease agents. In common with other Francisella species, their isolation and culture require specialized solid and liquid media containing cysteine and a source of iron. This likely restricted earlier efforts to identify them correctly as the cause of disease in aquatic animals. The most information to date relates to disease in cod, caused by F. noatunensis and tilapia, caused by F. noatunensis subsp. orientalis (also termed F. asiatica), both causing granulomatous inflammatory reactions. Mortalities in both species can be high and, as the disease can likely be transferred via live fish movements, they pose a significant threat to tilapia and cod aquaculture operations. Although the fish‐pathogenic Francisella species are classified in the same genus as the human pathogens F. tularensis, causative agent of tularemia, and F. philomiragia, the risk to humans from the fish and shellfish pathogenic Francisella species is considered very low.  相似文献

During the parasitological survey of cultured juvenile Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT) Thunnus orientalis in 2007 and 2008, two myxosporeans and one microsporidian were found. Morphological and molecular analysis showed that the heart-infecting and brain-infecting myxosporeans are identified as Kudoa shiomitsui and K. yasunagai, respectively. This is a new host record for both species. High prevalence of infection (77–100%) with K. shiomitsui was observed in October to December (1–2 months post-transfer to sea cages), whereas only a few fish were infected with K. yasunagai. A microsporidian observed as white “cysts” in the trunk muscle of PBT had a resemblance to Microsporidium seriolae, the causative parasite of beko disease in yellowtail. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the microsporidian from PBT is closely related to but distinct from several other muscle-infecting species such as M. seriolae, Microsporidium sp. RSB, and Microsporidium sp. SH. Additionally, the spore dimension (2.7 × 1.5 μm on average) was remarkably smaller than the others. These results suggest that the present microsporidian is an undescribed species and designated Microsporidium sp. PBT. Prevalence and intensity of infection with Microsporidium sp. PBT reached a maximum of 100% and 20 cysts/fish, respectively. Although pathogenic effects of the two Kudoa species on fish health remain unknown, the microsporidian could be of concern to PBT aquaculture due to unsightly cysts in the musculature, reducing the market value of the fish.  相似文献

Growth of fouling organisms on suspended fish cages is an impediment to aquaculture projects in coastal waters around the world. The present study characterized ecological succession of fouling communities on the netting of fish cages at an open ocean aquaculture site 10 km east of New Hampshire, USA in the western Gulf of Maine. Ecological succession can be defined as the process by which a community moves from a simple level of organization to a more complex community. Routine cleaning of the cages causes loss of organisms and initiation of ecological succession. Experimental panels of nylon net material were deployed at different times of the year and for different durations from September 2002 to September 2003 (eleven sets of 1-month panels, four sets of 3-month panels, two sets of 6-month panels, and one set of 1-year panels), with four replicates of each deployment. Panels were randomly arranged on a grid that was attached to a fish cage at a water depth of ∼ 15 m. There were substantial and significant differences in density and biomass of the total communities of most successional sequences when comparing panels deployed during May–September to those deployed during the cooler months, October–April. However, the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, dominated in density and biomass in almost every sequence, regardless of time of initiation or duration. Other species that occurred in high numbers and/or biomass were the amphipods Caprella sp. and Jassa marmorata, the molluscs Hiatella arctica and Anomia sp., the seastar Asterias vulgaris, and the anemone Metridium senile. Juveniles and adults of some species were also present in some early (1-month) successional sequences, indicating that migration may be an important process in community development. Some of the dominant species listed above were present in all successional stages (early, intermediate and late), differing only in relative abundances in the community. The consistent dominance of M. edulis, and other differences in successional patterns compared to what has been typically observed for epifaunal communities in the region, were hypothesized to be the result of a combination of factors: a lack of predators such as seastars and fish that typically consume mussels in natural communities, excessive predation by nudibranchs on those species (e.g., Tubularia sp.) normally abundant in early successional stages, year-round availability of mussel larvae, and cage cleaning protocols that do not remove all the organisms present. The introduction of predatory fishes or seastars into or onto the cages might provide some amount of control on the growth of fouling organisms.  相似文献
