The stomach of the lesser mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus) was observed macroscopically. It consisted of only three compartments, rumen, reticulum and abomasum without omasum. The rumen was S-shaped with large ventral and caudoventral blind sacs and the reticulum was larger than the abomasum. Internally, the rumen was covered with numerous ruminal papillae even on the pillars and the ruminoreticular fold. These papillae were leaf- or tongue-like shaped and varied in size and density. The reticulum had honey-combed crests and the secondary crests were found rarely. The lips of the reticular groove were prominent and more developed in the aboral part than in the oral one. A sac-like transition zone, which had more prominent mucosal folds than had the floor of the reticular groove, was observed between the caudal end of the reticular groove and the abomasum. Mucosal folds of the abomasum were spiral, low but rather thick. These findings were discussed in view of comparison with other ruminants and of possible functional implications.  相似文献

Details of the morphology of the forestomach of the Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus) were examined macroscopically, and by light and scanning electron microscopy. The rumen was sac-like in shape, and the right accessory longitudinal groove was not visible externally. The reticulum was relatively small, while the omasum was oval and large. Inside the rumen, even in the dorsal sac, the ruminal papillae were densely distributed, although absent on the pillars. The caudodorsal coronary pillar was indistinct. In the ruminoreticular fold, ruminal papillae were observed even on the reticulum side. In the reticulum, the primary reticular fold was apparent and the ill-defined secondary folds were also detected in some reticular cells. In the omasum, the omasal laminae of four sizes were recognized. The fourth order of laminae was occasionally absent. Histological sections of ruminal papillae revealed that softly keratinized epithelium covered the entire ruminal mucosa. In the reticulum, soft keratinized epithelium was observed throughout, with the exception of the tips of reticular papillae on which the epithelium showed evidence of hard keratinization. The epithelium of the omasal laminae was moderately keratinized. On the floor of the reticular groove, interlaminar area and in the omasal groove, the accumulations of numerous eosinophilic cells were observed in the superficial region. Under the scanning electron microscope, shallow transverse grooves were seen on the surface of the ruminal papillae. In general, the surface structure seemed to be similar to that of sheep rather than cattle. Cellular formations of the collagen fibrils were observed at the subepithelial region. In conclusion, examination of the forestomach allows classification of the Japanese serows as requiring an intermediate type of feeding habit and being between concentrate selectors and grass-roughage eaters from a morphological view.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to describe differences in the ontogenesis of the rumen in the sheep (domestic ruminant) and deer (wild ruminant). A total of 50 embryos and fetuses of Merino sheep and 50 of Iberian deer were used, from the first stages of prenatal life until birth. For the study, the animals were divided into five experimental groups according to the most relevant histological characteristics. The appearance of the rumen from the primitive gastric tube was earlier in the sheep (22% gestation, 33 days) than in the deer (25% gestation, 66 days). In both cases it displayed a primitive epithelium of a stratified, cylindrical, non‐ciliary type. At around 28% gestation in the sheep (42 days) and 26% (67 days) in the deer, the rumen was configured of three clearly‐differentiated layers: internal or mucosal, middle or muscular and external or serosal. In both species the stratification of the epithelial layer was accompanied by modifications in its structure with the appearance of the ruminal pillars and papillae. The pillars appeared before the papillae and the appearance of both structures was always earlier in the deer (pillars: 70 days, 27% gestation; papillae: 97 days, 36% gestation) than in the sheep (pillars: 42 days, 28% gestation; papillae: 57 days, 38% gestation). The outlines of the ruminal papillae appeared as evaginations of the basal zone toward the ruminal lumen, dragging in their formation the basal membrane, the lamina propria and the submucosa. The tegumentary mucosa of the rumen was without secretion capability in the first embryonic phases. From 67 days (26% gestation) the neutral mucopolysaccharides appeared in the deer and at 46 days (30% gestation) in the sheep. In both cases they continued to decrease until birth, this diminution being more pronounced in the deer. Finally, the presence of neuroendocrine and glial cells was detected in the deer at earlier stages than in the sheep.  相似文献

In New Zealand, the sambar deer is reported to feed on a variety of grasses and browse material. In the specimens studied, the average volume of the sambar rumen was about 15 l. Thick, non-papillated pillars divided the rumen into a saccus dorsalis and a saccus ventralis. The lining of the rumen was covered with papillae; those in the roof area were short and poorly developed. The omasum was a well-developed organ with 47-71 (mean 57) laminae. These were covered with short and poorly developed papillae. It is concluded that these sambar deer stomachs were typical of a grass-roughage feeder. This contrasts with the previous classification of the sambar deer as an intermediate feeder.  相似文献

We measured macroscopic anatomical parameters of the digestive tract of 12 female Himalayan tahrs. According to morphological criteria used sensu Hofmann for the classification of ruminants into feeding types - in particular the reticuloruminal capacity measured as wet content weights, the ruminal pillar thickness, the reticular honeycomb structure, the size of the omasum and the size of the parotid glands - tahrs can be classified as predominantly grazing ruminants. As reported in other ruminant species, the length of the large intestine was a more constant parameter over a range of body weights than that of the small intestine. The weight of the parotid glands scaled to metabolic body weight.  相似文献

The arrangement of subepithelial elastic fibers in the bovine gastric mucosa was studied by light and electron microscopy, with special reference to the elastic architecture of the cornified papillae. A common feature of their arrangement was that the fibers, derived from the elastic plexus in the deep layer of the lamina propria, extend perpendicularly toward the epithelium giving off the slender branches that end at the epithelial basement membrane. The connecting branches were observed electron microscopically in the form of oxytalan or slender elaunin fibers. The high frequency of fibers was found in the mucosa of the upper part of the ruminal atrium, the ruminal pillars, the reticular cristae and two kinds of cornified unguiculiform and omasal papillae. Each papilla consisted of the core of three-dimensional elastic network and numerous connecting-twigs arising from the superficial points of the network. The mucosae of the ruminal sacs, the floor of the reticular cells and the abomasum except the pyloric part were relatively poor in elastic fibers. These results suggest that the variation in fiber-arrangement may be relevant to the condition of mechanical stress inflicting on the gastric innersurface.  相似文献

Two different techniques were tested in nine calves to describe endoscopically the visible structures of the rumen and the reticulum. Ruminoscopy using an orally introduced flexible endoscope proved to be unsatisfactory, but when the endoscope was introduced through a ruminal fistula in the left flank into the dorsal and ventral ruminal sacs, the blind sacs, ruminal pillars, the atrium of the rumen, the reticulum and the reticular groove could all be displayed effectively. Indentations of the ruminal wall caused by the left kidney, the spleen and the abomasum could be seen with the endoscope as could reticulo-ruminal contractions. The technique allowed visual evaluation of the mucosal surfaces and movement of the rumen, reticulum and reticular groove. The advantages and disadvantages of ruminoscopy in bovine medicine are discussed.  相似文献

In this study, the arterial distributions of the aortic arches of three deer species (Axis axis, Ozotoceros bezoarticus and Mazama gouazoubira) were described. The animals were dissected immediately after being found dead. Latex injection method was used to observe the vascularization of the thorax. The branching pattern of the arteries of the thoracic aorta in O. bezoarticus was similar to domestic ruminants. In the M. gouazoubira and A. axis, there were no bicarotid trunk. Interestingly, the first branch of the brachiocephalic trunk was the left costocervical trunk in A. axis. Then, brachiocephalic trunk was divided into right and left subclavian arteries. M. gouazoubira and A. axis in contrast to O. bezoarticus were different when compared with other ruminants, and the absence of bicarotid trunk was more striking than previous reports.  相似文献

The histomorphological changes occurring in the Dama dama reticulum during prenatal development have been investigated. Twenty‐five Dama dama embryos were used, from the first stages of prenatal life until birth. Differentiation of the reticulum was observed at 23% gestation. By 25% gestation the reticular wall comprised three layers: an internal epithelial layer, a middle layer of pluripotential blastemic tissue and an external layer or serosa. Primary reticular crests were visible at 38% gestation. Secondary reticular crests were observed at 61% gestation. Neuroendocrine cells were detected by synaptophysin (SYP) at 35% gestation, in the lamina propria‐submucosa, tunica muscularis, and serosa. Epithelial Cytokeratin‐18 (CK‐18) cells were observed at 35% gestation extended throughout the epithelial layers. The glial cells (vimentin –VIM‐ and glial fibrillary acidic protein‐GFAP‐markers) were discerned at 25% and 43% gestation, respectively, in myenteric and submucosal plexuses, lamina propria, muscularis mucosae, tunica muscularis, and perivascular connective tissue. The neuropeptide Y (NPY) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) markers were immunodetected at 75% and 80 gestation, respectively, in the lamina propria‐submucosa, muscularis mucosae, tunica muscularis, serosa, and myenteric plexuses. The prenatal development of the fallow deer reticular mucosa evidenced a considerable precocity similar to that previously reported in goat and red deer.  相似文献

Neospora caninum is a worldwide distributed protozoan that may cause neuromuscular disease in dogs and reproductive failure in domestic and wild ruminants. One axis fawn (Axis axis) and four neonates from the same deer herd died at a zoo in Argentina within a four-month period. The fawn presented with dilatation of the anal sphincter at birth and incontinence, developed weakness and ataxia and died at 14 days of age. At necropsy, a mega formation of the distal large intestine was observed. Microscopically, non-suppurative encephalitis, suppurative bronchopneumonia, fibrin necrotic enteritis and degenerative changes in the liver were observed in hematoxilin and eosin-stained tissue sections, and thick-walled N. caninum-like cysts were observed in fresh brain samples. Serologic studies for N. caninum revealed an IFAT titer of 1:6400 in the fawn and 1:25, 1:400, 1:3200 and 1:6400 in the neonates. N. caninum DNA was detected in brain samples from the fawn and from one neonate by PCR, and the parasite was isolated in vitro from the fawn’ brain after passage through gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) and gamma-interferon knock-out mice. N. caninum DNA obtained from the fawn, neonate and isolated parasites showed the same microsatellite pattern. This suggests a common infection source for both animals. The diagnosis of N. caninum infection was confirmed, suggesting its association with perinatal mortality in captive axis deer. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of clinical disease associated to N. caninum infection in axis deer and of isolation of the parasite from this wild ruminant species.  相似文献

The ruminal mucosa of 15 pygmy goats of different age (Z1 approximately 4-5 months, Z2 approximately 1 year, Z3 approximately 1.5-5 years) were studied gross-anatomically concerning their colour, clumping of papillae, fodder precipitations on the papillae, areas poor in papillae or devoid of them and the development of papillae. The density of papillae/cm2 in the 3 groups investigated was 79.4; 67.3; 58.0; the mean length of the papillae (mm) 1.75; 1.86; 2.96; the mean breadth of the papillae (mm) 1.3; 1.2; 2.0; the area of the ruminal mucosa (cm2) 799; 943; 1 195; the area of the ruminal pillars (cm2) 38; 41; 69; the number of the papillae/rumen 59,940; 58,022; 64,782; the total absorptive area (cm2) 3,802; 3,854; 11,268; the surface magnifying factor 4.0; 3.4; 8.4.  相似文献

We diagnosed epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma of the forestomachs in 2 aged, half-sibling, zoo-managed bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus pygargus). One bontebok also had mesenteric lymph node and cutaneous involvement. Both animals had a history of chronic abdominal distension and diminished body condition that resulted in euthanasia. At autopsy, both animals had marked ruminal distension with diffusely blunted ruminal papillae and reticular crests. In case 1, there was an increased amount and particle length of the ruminoreticular fibrous material with scant fluid, and a 2-cm diameter focus of cutaneous crusting adjacent to a mammary teat. In case 2, the rumen and reticulum were fluid-distended with decreased fibrous material. Histologically in case 1, the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and skin had intraepithelial nests and sheets of neoplastic small lymphocytes; in case 2, the rumen and reticulum had a similar neoplastic cell population. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic lymphocytes were immunoreactive for CD3 and negative for CD20, confirming the diagnosis of epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma.  相似文献

Based on gross dissection of fifteen adult animals (11 females, 4 males), we described the arterial supply of the stomach and intestines of the pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus), a South American endangered species. The coeliac artery emitted the splenic, left gastric and hepatic arteries. The splenic artery directed towards the spleen, and the right ruminal artery, which is its only collateral directed towards the stomach, being the main artery of the rumen. The left gastric artery gave origin to the left ruminal, the reticular and the left gastroepiploic arteries. The left gastroepiploic artery originated the reticular accessory artery. Both arteries, gastric and left gastroepiploic, anastomosed their right counterparts derived from the hepatic artery on the curvatures of the abomasum. The cranial mesenteric artery irrigated the second half of the duodenum until the beginning of the descending colon. The thickest branch emitted by the cranial mesenteric artery was the ileocolic artery, which was destined to the ascending colon, caecum and ileum. The colic branches and the right colic arteries were irradiated on the right surface of the spiral loop of the ascending colon and distributed to both centripetal and centrifugal coils of the ascending colon; the colic branches were also anastomosed with the last jejunals and ileals and with the right colic arteries. There were no variations in the origin of any of the main branches derived from the coeliac and cranial mesenteric arteries. This species had a basic pattern of arterial distribution similar to small domestic ruminants.  相似文献

The fate of colostrum and other fluids given with an oesophageal feeder was studied in newborn calves and in young calves up to 3 weeks by means of radiological techniques. Any fluid given with an oesophageal feeder was found in the forestomachs, since it apparently did not induce an oesophageal groove reflex. Also when suckling was induced during feeding with the oesophageal feeder, the oesophageal groove reflex did not occur. The outflow of colostrum and other fluids from the forestomachs to the abomasum and small intestine occurred for the most part within 3 hours. Only the emptying of the ventral ruminal sac was sometimes delayed for 24 or 48 hours.

The results obtained in calves up to 3 weeks old did not differ from those obtained in newborn calves.

It was concluded that although colostrum given by oesophageal feeder entered the forestomachs, the rapid flow to the abomasum and small intestine created the conditions for a sufficient absorption of immunoglobulins. Application of colostrum with an oesophageal feeder in newborn calves promises to be a timesaving and effective method for creating an optimum passive immunity of the calves.  相似文献

Introduction Based on morphological and physiological differences in their digestive systems H ofmann and S tewart (1972) classified ruminants into three feeding types: concentrate selectors (CS), grass and roughage eaters (GR) and intermediate, opportunistic, mixed feeders (IM). In evolutionary terms CS most closely resemble the original ruminants (H ofmann 1989). They have a relatively small forestomach with large openings between the different parts of the stomach. The retention time of ingesta is short and therefore less suited to optimizing cellulose digestion. They have relatively large saliva glands, producing high volumes of saliva (F ickel et al. 1998), which may facilitate the passage of soluble nutrients down their highly developed ventricular groove. The CS ruminants choose easily digestible forage, especially dicotyledons, which are rich in soluble plant cell contents (PCC, T ixier et al. 1997; D uncan et al. 1998). With evolution, the forestomach of the ruminants became larger relative to body size, and also more subdivided. These evolutionary adaptations optimized the selective retention of feed particles and increased retention time, leading to improvement of cellulose digestion. Large GR are well adapted to digest plant cell walls (PCW), i.e. structural carbohydrates (cellulose); they consequently feed mainly on monocotyledons. Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) are very small ruminants which select concentrated feed. As energy requirements increase proportional to metabolic body weight (K leiber 1961) roe deer require relatively more energy per unit body mass for maintenance compared to that required by large ruminants (V an S oest 1994; D uncan et al. 1998). Easily digestible forage is not sufficient to satisfy the energy requirements of roe deer. It is proposed therefore that these animals may have other methods of avoiding energy losses due to microbial fermentation, either bypassing nutrients down the ventricular groove (rumen bypass) or by ruminal escape of unfermented and/or partially fermented nutrients (H ofmann 1989). The relatively high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids present in the depot fat of roe deer due to only partial rumen biohydrogenation (M eyer et al. 1998) supports the alternative hypothesis of rumen bypass or ruminal escape. Once reaching the small intestine, partially fermented or bypassed soluble carbohydrates can be further hydrolysed by maltase and sucrase to monosaccharides. These monosaccharides are then available for absorption. The intestinal sodium-dependent glucose cotransporter (SGLT1) in the brush border membrane (BBM) of the enterocytes is a stable indicator for the presence of sugars in the small intestine. The expression and activity of SGLT1 protein are regulated by the level of sugars reaching the small intestine (F erraris and D iamond 1989). Infusion of d -glucose into the intestinal lumen of ruminant sheep for 2 h stimulates the expression of SGLT1 which can be detected 4 days later in the newly formed mature enterocytes (S hirazi -B eechey et al. 1995). When dietary carbohydrate is removed, it takes 3 days before the brush border glucose uptake capacity decreases significantly from control values (F erraris 1994). This reflects the time of physiological cell renewal. In GR, such as sheep, the capacity of the intestine to absorb sugars decreases up to 500-fold during development (S hirazi -B eechey et al. 1995). This decrease in the intestinal absorptive capacity is a reflection of the decline in SGLT1 transport activity and protein abundance. It is not due to modifications in the structure of the absorptive surface and cannot be explained in terms of an age-related process (S hirazi -B eechey et al. 1991). It has been shown that there is a direct correlation between the level of monosaccharides reaching the lumen of the small intestine and the expression of functional SGLT1 protein (D yer et al. 1997). Therefore in this study we aimed to investigate the presence of functional SGLT1 in the small intestine of roe deer as a stable indicator of the availability of glucose in the luminal content of the small intestine. The presence of SGLT1 protein in the small intestine will support the hypothesis of rumen bypass and/or ruminal escape of nutrients. Furthermore we measured the maltase activities in the BBM, as part of the carbohydrates reach the intestinal lumen as polysaccharides and have to be broken down to monosaccharides before absorption.  相似文献

Differences in macroscopic measurements of the gastrointestinal tract have been hypothesized to correlate with the browser–grazer continuum in the natural diet of ruminants. However, to what extent these characteristics represent species‐specific traits, or respond to the actually ingested diet, remains to be investigated. Twelve surplus addax antelope (Addax nasomaculatus) were divided into two groups and fed, for 3 months, either their usual diet, consisting of a concentrate feed with a limited amount of hay, or a diet of unlimited hay only. After culling, macroscopic measurements were compared between groups. The macroscopic anatomy of the addax showed many characteristics considered typical for grazing or ‘cattle‐type’ ruminants. While both diet groups had mesenteric, pericardial and perirenal adipose tissue, these depots were subjectively more pronounced in concentrate‐fed animals. Hay‐fed animals had significantly heavier filled forestomach compartments, with corresponding significantly longer linear measurements. Masseter muscles and the surface of first‐order omasal leaves were significantly more prominent in hay‐fed animals, reflecting possible adaptations to overcome resistance of grass forage and to reabsorb fluid from increased rumination, but differences were not as distinct as reported between ‘cattle‐type’ and ‘moose‐type’ ruminants. Some measurements such as reticular crests and empty foregut mass remained stable between groups, indicating possibly genetically pre‐defined characteristics less prone to change in adult life. The results emphasize the adaptability of ruminant digestive tract anatomy in adult animals even after a short period of time, but also suggest limits to this adaptability that reveals a species‐specific anatomy regardless of the diet actually consumed.  相似文献

Five female sika deer and three male Holstein cattle were offered alfalfa hay cubes at 2% (deer) and 2.5% (cattle) of bodyweight, respectively. The passage rate through the digestive tract, digestibility and rumen fermentation of the animals were determined. The rate of ruminal passage was higher and the total mean retention time in the digestive tract was shorter in deer than in cattle. In addition, the rate of post‐ruminal passage in deer was lower. The digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and fiber in deer were significantly lower than in cattle (P < 0.05). The concentration of total volatile fatty acids in the rumen was significantly higher in deer than in cattle. The molar percentage of acetic acid was lower and that of valeric acid was higher in deer (P < 0.05). The number of protozoa was somewhat higher in deer. These results suggested that the lower digestibility in deer might be a result of the shorter retention time in the digestive tract.  相似文献

To study the effects of supplementary probiotics on dry matter intake (DMI), daily gain (DG), digestibility, ruminal pH, and fecal microbial populations and metabolites in ruminants, two reversal trials were conducted by using four Suffolk ewes fitted with rumen cannula. The ewes were fed with oat hay and with concentrate and oat hay in the ratio of 60 : 40 in experiments 1 and 2, respectively. The ewes in the treatment groups were supplemented with 10 g/day/head probiotics for 49 days. Fresh fecal samples were collected to measure microbial populations and metabolites. On days 43–47 total feces was collected to measure digestibility, and on the days 48 and 49 ruminal pH was measured. No significant difference of DMI, DG, dry matter digestibility, and ruminal pH was observed between the control and treatment groups. The probiotics treatment tended to increase crude fiber (P = 0.11) and organic cell wall digestibility (P = 0.18). In the final week, probiotics treatment significantly increased the fecal population of Bacilli (P < 0.05) and mold (P < 0.01) in experiment 1 and 2, respectively. No significant difference of fecal VFA and ammonia concentrations between the control and treatment groups was observed. The supplementary probiotics changed population of some microbial strains in the feces and possibly the large intestine of ewes.  相似文献

The postnatal development of the epithelium of the ruminal papillae was described in lambs during their first few weeks of life. Papillae from the ventral sac were collected from 4 one-week-old lambs and from 4 one-month-old lambs. The stages of epithelial differentiation, which were developmental, were discussed in relation to their transepithelial metabolic exchange.  相似文献
