Summary Twenty three accessions of nine Portuguese cabbage and kale land races from different geographic origins were tested at the seedling stage for resistance to several important brassica diseases. Resistance to downy mildew (Peronospora parasitica), expressed as necrosis of the cotyledon mesophyll, was found in all the accessions. Type A resistance to cabbage yellows (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans race 1) was present in most of the landraces. Resistance to clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae race 6) was found in one accession of the Portuguese tree kale. High resistance to blackleg (Leptosphaeria maculans) and white rust (Albuco candida) was not detected, although several accessions showed 20 to 30% of plants with intermediate expression of resistance. All Portuguese cole accessions were susceptible to blackrot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris).  相似文献

Summary A wide range of cultivated brassica accessions including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, collard, kale and swede material was tested against the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae, at HRI, Wellesbourne in the field and laboratory in both 1992 and 1993. In the field, B. brassicae attack was assessed as the proportion of infested plants and the numbers of aphid colonies present. In the laboratory, aphid performance was measured in terms of the pre-reproductive and reproductive period, population increase, and insect mortality. Interpretation of the data was facilitated by plotting sorted accession means against normal order statistics. This statistical approach indicated the spread of variation amongst the accessions and permitted identification of extremes. Partial levels of antixenosis resistance were discovered in red brassicas. Glossy accessions of cabbage and cauliflower possessed antixenosis and antibiosis resistance that lasted throughout the season of crop growth in the field. Other accessions were shown to withstand aphid attack and therefore possessed tolerance. The laboratory studies provided information on mechanisms of antibiosis resistance. The potential value of the different sources of resistance is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Seven spelt wheat accessions of different origin were hybridized with the susceptible bread wheat cultivar Taichung 29 in order to study the genetics of their resistance to yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis Westend. f. sp. tritici). One Iranian and five European accessions were found to carry Yr5 of Triticum aestivum ssp. spelta var. album, whereas a factor for resistance in the Iranian accession 415 was confirmed to be genetically distinct from Yr5. The alleles for resistance in each of the accessions studied showed a monogenic dominant mode of inheritance. Twenty-eight spelt wheat accessions, including those studied for their resistance to yellow rust, were subjected to polyacrylamide-gel-electrophoresis to study variation for gliadin storage protein patterns. Thirteen distinct patterns were revealed, implying the presence of duplicates within the studied spelt wheat collection.  相似文献

Bananas cultivated for export all belong to Cavendish cultivars and are all recognized as very susceptible to nematodes, particularly to the burrowing nematode Radopholus similis and the lesion nematode Pratylenchus coffeae. Even if there have been many changes in the management of banana nematodes in large commercial banana plantations, chemical control still remains most often the last resort method to manage the nematodes, although the number of registered products is definitely declining. Therefore, nematode control though genetic improvement is gaining new interest worldwide. In this study, 55 banana accessions mostly diploids from the Musa acuminata genome group (AA) but including some triploid accessions (AAA), some diploids of the Musa balbisiana genome group (BB) and some interspecific hybrids (AAB, AB) were evaluated for resistance to four nematode species R. similis, P. coffeae, Meloidogyne incognita and M. arenaria. These experiments were conducted in a growth chamber under controlled conditions. All banana accessions were susceptible to nematode species, although many different levels of susceptibility were detected. This study confirmed the good resistance status to R. similis of some cultivars from the Pisang jari buaya and Pisang batuau subgroups and the partial resistance of 17 diploid accessions significantly different from the susceptible reference cv. Grande Naine. This study also showed that 12 diploid accessions exhibited a partial resistance to P. coffeae, including some usual or potential genitors belonging to the wild diploids subspecies burmannica (cvs. Long Tavoy 1 and 2) and burmannicoides (cv. Calcutta 4). No source of resistance to Meloidogyne spp. was found. These screening results, combining for the first time four nematode species, are discussed within the scope of banana breeding in order to produce parental diploid lines with single or combined nematode resistances and further develop triploids that can substitute existing susceptible commercial cultivars.  相似文献

Summary A hypothetical scheme is given for the evolution of the different types of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis L.). This has been useful in identifying sources of reduced susceptibility to cabbage root fly (Delia radicum (L.)), and may also be useful in the search for reduced susceptibility to clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae Woron.). It is argued that knowledge of the phylogeny of types within each crop species is of great importance in the exploitation of genetic resources.  相似文献

Summary Microspore culture was shown to be applicable to a broad range of accessions belonging to six horticulturally important crop types of Brassica oleracea: broccoli, white cabbage, cauliflower, savoy cabbage, Brussels sprouts and curly kale. Of 64 accessions tested 86% were responsive. Large genotypic differences were found in number of embryos produced per flower bud, and in frequency and mode of regeneration of plants from embryos. B. oleracea was characterized by a strong asynchrony of microspore development within single buds. Microspore populations optimal for culture contained a large proportion (10–40%) of binucleate pollen. An initial high temperature treatment was essential for microspore embryogenesis. Growth conditions of the donor plants during inflorescence formation were less critical.  相似文献

A total of 240 kale, 38 cabbage and 126 winter cauliflower French landraces from the B. oleracea genepool of INRA were assessed for resistance to clubroot caused by Plasmodiophora brassicaeWoron. Two French isolates of the pathogen (K and SJ) were used in the experiments under controlled conditions. The reaction of the 126 cauliflower accessions to naturally occurring clubroot was also evaluated in field trials. Kales exhibited considerable variation for expression of disease resistance and high levels of resistance were found in several accessions. In this group, single resistant plants were observed in most of the morphological types and from quite different geographical origins. Cabbage accessions were moderately to highly susceptible to both isolates. All cauliflower populations proved to be highly susceptible to K isolate and moderately susceptible to SJ isolate. In field trials, cauliflowers were also severely infected. Two lines selected from a resistant kale population were highly resistant against a large range of pathotypes of the pathogen. These lines presented a sufficient level of resistance to be directly useful in the breeding program in order to develop cauliflower and broccoli hybrids resistant to clubroot. A series of PCR methods were used to detect S-RNase alleles and SFB alleles and to determine S-genotypes in 25 accessions of myrobalan (Prunus cerasifera L.). Firstly, primers flanking the polymorphic second intron were used to identify S-RNases in agarose gels. These primers amplified one or two bands per accession in 25 accessions. Then consensus primers were designed for amplifying the polymorphic first intron, unique to Prunus S-RNases, for automated fluorescent detection. Each accession produced one or two peaks. New primers were then developed to amplify the intron in the SFB gene, for detection by fluorescence. Cross-referencing PCR bands and peaks indicated 15 S-alleles were present in the 25 accessions. Cloning, sequencing and comparison with published data indicated that the amplified products were S-RNase alleles. Sequence information was used to design primers specific for each S-RNase. Full and consistent S-genotypes were obtained by cross-comparing PCR data for 23 of the 25 accessions, and two accessions appeared to have a single allele. Pollen-tube microscopy indicated function of some but not all of the S-alleles sequenced.  相似文献

Zingiber zerumbet (L) Smith, a wild clonal species related to the cultivated ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe), is a potential resistance donor for soft rot disease in ginger caused by Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson) Fitzp. In this study we evaluated the genetic diversity and P. aphanidermatum resistance of 74 Z. zerumbet accessions belonging to 15 populations from eight districts in Kerala state, India. The disease index (DI) of the accessions varied from 0% to 72.24% and the accessions could be separated into six frequency classes according to their DI values. More than 65% of the accessions had a DI < 20%. Eight accessions were found to be immune to the infection. The relative frequency of resistant accessions was higher in the central and northern regions of Kerala. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis of Z. zerumbet accessions using five primer combinations yielded 215 bands in total, of which 175 (81.4%) were polymorphic. Nei’s genetic diversity (h) of 0.2738 and Shannon information index (I) of 0.4012 revealed a high genetic diversity in Z. zerumbet unexpected for a clonal species. In the UPGMA dendrogram, accessions were clustered mostly according to their geographical origin and no clear correspondence was observed between the clustering pattern of accessions and their responses to Pythium aphanidermatum. The study revealed high genetic diversity and variability for pathogen resistance among Z. zerumbet accessions and confirmed the value of Z. zerumbet as a potential donor for soft rot resistance for the genetic improvement of ginger.  相似文献

Summary A total of 1789 accessions of several lettuce collections was screened to find new major gene resistance to the downy mildew fungus Bremia lactucae Regel. The accessions belonged to the species Lactuca sativa (N=1288), L. serriola (N=399), L. saligna (N=52) and L. virosa (N=50). A total of 20 races of B. lactucae were used, 14 of which were NL-races, isolated from cultivated lettuce in the Netherlands. The other six races were isolated from wild L. serriola in Czechoslovakia. The accessions were initially screened with two races: NL1 and NL3. Accessions with resistance to one or both of these races were tested with the other races. Phenotypes with new resistance were found in accessions of all four Lactuca species. Of L. sativa, four accessions were found with resistance phenotypes that could not be explained by combinations of known major genes. Many accessions of L. serriola had resistance phenotypes that indicated the presence of unknown resistance genes. All interactions between accessions of L. saligna and races of B. lactucae were incompatible in leaf disc tests, except for four accessions, which showed some sporulation with race NL6. Several accessions of L. virosa were resistant to all races used. Other accessions of L. virosa gave a race-specific interaction with B. lactucae.  相似文献

Summary The reactions to infection with two cultures of Puccinia hordei were determined for 292 Hordeum spontaneum (syn. H. vulgare ssp. spontaneum) accessions, collected at 16 sites which encompassed the ecological range of H. spontaneum in Israel. Culture Tel-Aviv was from Israel and culture 57.19 was from the United States. Fifty-two percent of the accessions were resistant to culture Tel-Aviv and 67% were resistant to culture 57.19. Forty-three percent of the accessions were resistant to both cultures. The average infection type (IT) of accessions within sites ranged from 2.7 to 7.5 on a 0–9 rating scale. The results showed that the presence of Ornithogalum species, the alternate hosts of P. hordei, may increase the percentage of H. spontaneoum accessions resistant to P. hordei. More accessions were resistant at sites where humidity at 1400 was higher, the annual evaporation was lower, and where the glumes were shorter. Kernel weight and annual rainfall was not correlated with resistance. A lower percentage of H. spontaneum accessions were resistant to P. hordei culture Tel-Aviv from Israel than to culture 57.19 from the United States. In a previous study a lower percentage of H. spontaneum accessions also was found to be resistant to a culture of Erysiphe graminis hordei from Israel than to cultures from other countries. Previous studies also have shown that cultures of P. hordei and E. graminis hordei from Israel have many genes for virulence on barley, and that H. spontaneum accessions from Israel have many genes for resistance to these two pathogens. Previous results and the results reported in this paper support the hypothesis of coevolution of resistant host genes and virulent pathogen genes where hosts and pathogens have coexisted for many thousand years.  相似文献

Summary A geographically representative selection of germplasm of Beta vulgaris, section Beta has been assessed for characteristics important in sugarbeet breeding, including downy mildew resistance, resistance to aphid colonisation and infection by the beet virus yellow complex. The occurrence of maintainer lines for cytoplasmic male-steriles was also investigated. Desirable qualities were found in some accessions, including nothern European wild vulgaris ssp. maritima and some old multigerm cultivars of fodder beets.  相似文献

Summary Avoidance of rust fungi that was based on poor appressorium induction was previously found in Hordeum chilense. In the present study 95 accessions of Triticeae were screened for avoidance of Puccinia hordei. The percentage of appressorium formation per germinated spore ranged from 6 to 90%. On none of the 41 accessions of Aegilops, Agropyron, Elymus, Secale, Thinopyrum or Triticum studied was the rate of appressorium formation lower than 25%. Lower rates of appressorium formation were, however, found on accessions of wild barley species Hordeum brachyantherum, H. marinum, H. parodii and H. secalinum. Its implications in cereal breeding are discussed.  相似文献

Between 580 and 700 accessions of related cultivated and wild species of the genus Beta were assessed for resistance to four soil-borne diseases of sugar beet: two seedling damping-off diseases caused by the fungi Aphanomyces cochlioides and Pythium ultimum and two diseases of more mature plants, Rhizoctonia root and crown rot, caused by the fungus R. solani, and Rhizomania, caused by Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), a furovirus transmitted by the plasmodiophorid Polymyxa betae. Analysis of resistance data (assessed on an international standardised 1–9 scale of Resistance Scores) indicated that the highest levels of resistance ({RS} 2) to A. cochlioides and P. ultimum were to be found amongst accessions of the more distantly related sections Corollinae (93% of accessions tested) and Procumbentes (10%), respectively; although useful levels could also be found in the more closely related, and sexually compatible, section Beta (1–6%). Resistance to Rhizoctonia was also found in section Beta (5–7%), depending on whether field or glasshouse tests were used, but there was little evidence of generally high levels of resistance to Rhizomania among accessions of this section. None of the accessions of sections Corollinae and Procumbentes exhibited any notable resistance to Rhizoctonia. However, all sections Procumbentes and some sections Corollinae (4%) accessions were highly resistant to Rhizomania. Individuals with high levels of resistance to Rhizomania were identified from within some section Beta and Corollinae accessions, in which there was evidence of segregation.  相似文献

Mist-chamber, field, and detached leaf inoculation procedures identified plants resistant to bacterial soft rot [Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora, (Ecc)] in Brassica rapa and related species. The mist-chamber seedling inoculation provided the best correlation of mean disease severity ratings with the field plant inoculation (r = 0.67**) and was used to identify resistant materials. The optimum mist-chamber incubation conditions to distinguish the resistance of accessions were 23 °C and 100% RH and were used for primary screening. A total of 752 accessions of B. rapa and related Cruciferae were screened. In general, accessions of B. oleracea were more resistant than accessions of B. rapa. Within B. rapa, subspecies pekinensis and chinensis were more susceptible than other subspecies. No completely resistant material was found. In species of B. rapa, only 7% of accessions showed some degree of resistance with plant-to-plant variation within the accessions. G30444, G30449, and AVRDC2837 were identified as the most resistant materials in B. rapa by both mist-chamber and field inoculations. The resistance was correlated between an USA isolate (Geneva-1) and two Chinese isolates (RL4-1 and RL-19) of Ecc. Summary The inheritance of resistance in cabbage (Brassica oleracea var.capitata) to damage caused byThrips tabaci Lindeman was studied in progeny from four crosses between resistant and susceptible inbred lines. In two families sharing the same susceptible parent, the narrow-sense heritability was calculated to be high (>90%), using the Warner method of calculation (Warner, 1952). The other two families, also sharing a susceptible parent, had very low narrow-sense heritability (0–11%). In three of the four families, however, the validity of the Warner calculations were called into question due to significant epistatic interactions. In all four families, the F1 populations approached or exceeded the susceptibility of the susceptible parent, indicating that susceptibility is generally dominant. The importance of epistasis and dominance suggests that tests of hybrid combinations to determine combining ability for thrips resistance may be required, rather than selecting only on the basis of thrips damage to the inbred lines. The technique of planting wheat upwind from the cabbage test plot did generate adequate levels of thrips pressure, but the infestation was uneven in two of the four blocks, so that reasonable replication of tests is required.  相似文献

Summary Eighty-one accessions of three Lactuca species which showed no recognisable race specific resistance to Bremia lactucae when tested in the laboratory as seedlings, exhibited different degrees of susceptibility when exposed to natural field infection. As a group, crisp genotypes had less mildew and a slower rate of disease development than other types of lettuce. Wild forms of Lactuca sativa and Lactuca serriola were particularly susceptible. In a further trial, the low field susceptibility of three lettuce cultivars (Iceberg, Batavia blonde de Paris and Grand Rapids) was confirmed. Disease development on cv. Iceberg was compared to that on the highly susceptible cv. Hilde in experiments where the two cultivars were grown either in close proximity or in isolation. The absolute level of attack on cv. Iceberg depended upon disease pressure and differences between the two types only became apparent approximately 8 wk after sowing.  相似文献

There is no information in the literature about the variability of resistance of Chinese Brassica vegetables, pak choi and Chinese cabbage, to the white blister disease caused by Albugo candida (Pers.) Kuntze. A collection of 43 accessions of pak choi and 19 accessions of Chinese cabbage was screened for resistance to the Portuguese A. candida isolate Ac 506 at the cotyledon stage. Different levels of resistance were found among the germplasm tested, ranging from complete resistance to full susceptibility. Most of the accessions were highly susceptible with less than 10% of resistant seedlings, and only four accessions of pak choi, presenting more than 50% resistant seedlings, were considered as new sources or resistance to white blister. Inheritance of resistance at the cotyledon stage was studied in two crosses between the most resistant pak choi accession, BRA 117, and the highly susceptible rapid cycling Brassica rapa line CrGC 1.19. It was proposed that resistance to white blister in pak choi BRA 117 is controlled by two nuclear genes with dominant recessive epistatic gene action.  相似文献
