Sheep scab was eradicated from Britain in 1952 but reappeared in 1973. The host specificity of the sheep scab mite is discussed; sheep are the only reservoir of the disease in Britain. Control is by single dipping in the approved acaricides, HCH, diazinon or propetamphos. Acaricides are approved only if the minimum use rate (Maintenance level) will give at least 4 weeks' protection. The method of testing is described. Traditionally, compulsory dipping has been in the winter when the disease is most active. Although the mites were originally thought to enter a latent phase during the summer, new observations indicate that there is little difference between their summer and winter behaviour. In Britain, dipping is now compulsory in both the summer and winter.  相似文献

The response of sheep scab mites to pyrethroid insecticides and organophosphate compounds was studied in vitro with the objective of finding a simple test for detecting insecticide resistance in scab mites. Psoroptes cuniculi from rabbits or P. ovis from sheep were enclosed in small 'tea bags' made from heat sealable paper prior to dipping in insecticide. Mites failed to die 24 h after a 1 min dip in working concentrations of insecticidal sheep dips. With flumethrin a variety of different conditions were tested but most failed to improve the efficacy of flumethrin. It is suggested with freshly collected mites pyrethroids may be taken up by ingestion.  相似文献

The availability of large numbers of undamaged sheep scab mites, Psoroptes ovis, would be beneficial for discovery screening and development trials. There are several reported procedures for removing scab mites from sheep but they have limitations. To overcome this, a simple but versatile method employing the use of pumped saline was developed to remove all stages of the P. ovis mite from sheep. The method takes no more than 2 min to remove mites from the selected site with relative ease and is not affected by the condition of the fleece or lesion. The number of mites removed with the new method was 5-10 times more than detected by visual examination. These mites were undamaged and survived off-host for up to 16 days. The robust, portable equipment is easy to use under field conditions, making this method suitable for use as a diagnostic tool for early detection and monitoring of scab mites thus providing opportunities for development of novel alternative control strategies.  相似文献

SUMMARY An investigation of sheep flocks with unknown histories of fleece derangement, selected at random from the main sheep raising areas of New South Wales, showed that Psorergates ovis was present in 53 of the 177 flocks surveyed and In 162 of the 3495 sheep examined. Of the single causes of fleece derangement, the most prevalent was grass seed contamination (15.7%) followed by Infestation with sheep body lice, Bovicola ovis, (14.7%) and Infestation with Itch mite (7.8%). The prevalence of fleece derangement was significantly higher on sheep In which lice were the only ectoparasites found than on those In which Itch mites were the only ectoparasites present. The greatest prevalence of P ovis was In flocks In the Young, Yass, Mudgee and Tenterfield districts. In most affected flocks, more than one potential cause of fleece derangement was present. Itch mite Infestation was more prevalent in flocks that received no treatment for ectoparasites than in those that had been treated in the year preceding the survey. Our results did not support a commonly held belief among farmers that arsenical compounds control Infestations of Itch mites more effectively than other types of pesticides. There was no significant difference in prevalence of fleece derangement between flocks treated with different pesticide groups and those that received no treatment, but mean fleece derangement score was significantly lower in sheep treated with organophosphates than in untreated sheep. Infestations of lice were significantly more prevalent in sheep from flocks treated with synthetic pyrethroids than from those treated with organophosphates or those that received no treatment.  相似文献

Four trials including 11,266 sheep were conducted in South Africa to evaluate the efficacy of the systemic parasiticide ivermectin against field outbreaks of sheep scab (Psoroptes ovis) when two doses of approximately 200 micrograms/kg were administered subcutaneously seven days apart (days 0 and 7). As sheep scab is a notifiable disease in South Africa, it was not possible to include an untreated control group. The prevalence of clinically affected animals in the four treated flocks varied from 0.4 per cent to 99 per cent before the two treatments. After the treatments, there were no signs of active clinical infection in any of the sheep between days 28 and 30, or at subsequent examinations. P ovis mites were recovered from scrapings from 114 of 127 indicator sheep before the treatment but no mites were recovered from them between days 28 and 30 or 42 and 58 after the treatments.  相似文献

The need for alternative control strategies for sheep scab is critical. One approach is to develop vaccines based on 'concealed' antigens derived from Psoroptes ovis. This strategy requires the identification and characterisation of potential target antigens, which has been hampered by the problem of limited biological material for isolation of protein antigens. To aid the discovery of P. ovis antigens and to provide a resource for generating recombinant protein, we constructed a P. ovis cDNA expression library, using total RNA isolated from 250 mg of mixed-stage P. ovis and the Clontech SMART cDNA synthesis kit. The presence of P. ovis-specific sequences was confirmed using PCR amplification and sequencing of actin. The sequences of cDNA inserts from six random clones included one with high homology to the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (house dust mite) antigen p Dp15. This is a glutathione S-transferase known to be an important house dust mite antigen. We conclude that this library will be a useful tool for the identification of potential target antigens for the immunological control of P. ovis and to further our understanding of the pathology of sheep scab.  相似文献

The prevalence and control of blowfly strike in England and Wales was investigated by a postal survey of 2451 sheep farmers, divided into five regions, who were asked about the blowfly seasons of 1988 and 1989. These were important years for the control of blowfly strike because the number of compulsory dips for the control of sheep scab was reduced from two to one in 1989. The response rate was 74.2 per cent. A larger proportion of farmers in the south west and south east reported strike (90 per cent), than in the north of England (60 per cent). The proportion of sheep with strike showed a similar regional variation (0.7 per cent in the north of England to 2.8 per cent in the south west). Dipping was the most common method of blowfly control, followed by tail amputation, dagging, spraying and cyromazine. Twenty per cent of farmers reported reducing the frequency of dipping in 1989, and of those 20 per cent increased the frequency of spraying and 20 per cent used cyromazine.  相似文献

Despite large numbers of hill sheep reared in the UK, little is known about how hill farmers react to health challenges in their flocks. This paper addresses this lack of knowledge of sheep health management practices and presents farmers' opinions and concerns, particularly regarding ectoparasite control. Focus groups and interviews with UK hill sheep farmers were carried out to collect information on management practices, health concerns, in addition to incidence and impacts of six major ectoparasites (ticks, lice, sheep scab mite, blowfly, keds and headfly), to determine how they viewed the effects of ectoparasites and their control on production practices.

We conclude that despite variations between hill sheep farm conditions and levels of input, similar health concerns and ectoparasite issues were found across different hill sheep farming areas of the UK. Farm labour was also an important issue and most farmers would prefer more labour to be available to effectively manage ectoparasites in their flocks. Finally, there was variation in farmers' opinions of the impact of ectoparasite species on welfare and productivity. This variation in opinion can be related to a trend in their past experience of ectoparasites, but no relationships were found with the animal health treatments farmers use, the number of animals in their flock or variation in the type of grazing land available.  相似文献

The options for the treatment and control of sheep scab (psoroptic mange) have been increased in recent years through the introduction of the endectocides ivermectin, doramectin and moxidectin. Whilst therapeutic efficacy is good, the current injectable formulations offer limited protection against re-infestation with Psoroptes ovis. An intraruminal controlled-release formulation of ivermectin has been developed to provide therapeutic and prophylactic activity against a range of sensitive endo- and ecto-parasites of sheep for 100 days after administration. These ivermectin boluses are designed to release ivermectin at 20-40 microg/kg/day over 100 days and were developed for use in sheep of 20-90 kg bodyweight. Several controlled therapeutic and prophylactic trials against sheep scab have been conducted under a variety of protocols with such boluses in Europe and South America. The results of these studies indicate that the bolus provides 100% therapeutic efficacy against established P. ovis infestations and equivalent prophylactic efficacy against challenge infestations administered during the active life of the bolus.  相似文献

In sheep, lesions caused by Psoroptes ovis, the sheep scab mite, may become colonized by Staphylococcus aureus. The present study compares clinical signs, lesional area and the immune response to P. ovis and S. aureus in P. ovis-infested sheep with and without secondary S. aureus infection. No differences were detected in the clinical signs or lesional areas in the S. aureus-positive and -negative sheep. However, 6 weeks after infestation an IgG but not IgE isotype antibody response to S. aureus was detected in the S. aureus-positive but not the S. aureus-negative group of sheep. This response targeted S. aureus antigens with molecular weights of approximately 36, 38, 50 and 65 kDa. In addition, 6 weeks after infestation an IgE response to P. ovis was detected in the S. aureus-positive but not the S. aureus-negative group of sheep.  相似文献

A new synthetic pyrethroid, cyhalothrin, has been evaluated as both a sheep dip and a jetting fluid for the control of body lice ( Damalinia ovis ), face lice ( Linognathus ovillus ), foot lice (Linognathus pedalis) and the sheep ked (Melophagus ovinus). A dip wash concentration of 1.25 ppm cyhalothrin eradicated D. ovis from sheep. A jetting fluid at a concentration of 20 ppm also eradicated D. ovis. In the field cyhalothrin was evaluated at 20 ppm as a dip wash and at 50 ppm as a jetting fluid. These field trials confirmed the ability of cyhalothrin to eradicate D. ovis from short and long-woolled sheep. The sucking lice, L. ovillus and L. pedalis , were also found to be very susceptible to cyhalothrin at a dip wash concentration of 20 ppm, but it was necessary to treat the predilection sites infested by these parasites twice within a 3-week period to achieve their eradication. Sheep ked (M. ovinus) were eradicated from an infected flock of sheep after plunge dipping in cyhalothrin at 20 ppm.  相似文献

The paper reviews the recent change in attitudes to dipping sheep and the proposed legal requirements to prevent and treat sheep scab. The implications of fulfillment of all the requirements of the European Groundwater Directive and the probable resultant increase of the use of injectable endectocides as an alternative to plunge dipping are discussed in relation to their likely frequency of use and potential ecological impact. In particular the properties of doramectin, one of the most recently introduced, are examined in relation to its use for the treatment of sheep scab.  相似文献

A single Merino sheep, artificially infested with the sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, and a similarly infested Dorper sheep were placed with 9 uninfested Merino or 9 uninfested Dorper sheep respectively during winter and the rate of spread of infestation on the uninfested sheep observed. The same procedure was repeated in summer. It took 14 and 8 weeks respectively in winter before all sheep in the 2 groups displayed lesions of sheep scab, whereas in summer it took 10 and 12 weeks before all sheep had lesions.  相似文献

Sheep scab, which is caused by the mite Psoroptes ovis, is a notifiable disease in Switzerland. In the framework of an epidemiological study in the canton of Schwyz, a sheep scab outbreak on 2 adjacent alpine pastures with 62 flocks (1770 sheep) was followed up clinically, parasitologically and serologically. No mass treatment of the flocks with organophosphates or avermectins had been undertaken before the flocks were taken up to the alpine pastures, but they were treated according to their serological status. Supervised treatment of seropositive judged flocks (at least one seropositive or at least 2 serologically equivocal animals per flock) with Doramectin was undertaken, whilst seronegative judged flocks remained untreated. Sheep returned from the summer pastures in early September 2001 and within three months scab infestation was diagnosed in 53 flocks (85.5%). These infested flocks were scattered all over the canton. Furthermore, the transfer of sheep from 6 infested flocks resulted in the transmission of the disease to 10 new flocks. Infested flocks were kept in quarantine and sanitized. The complexity of the traditional use of shared alpine pastures and the intense, uncontrolled trading with animals render the control of sheep scab difficult.  相似文献

Sheep scab mites, Psoroptes ovis, collected from a Merino donor sheep, were used to infest Merino and Dorper sheep, and Angora and Boer goats. Mites were placed on the sheep on 1 or 2 occasions and on 5 occasions on the goats. All the animals were examined at regular intervals for the presence of scab lesions and living mites. Both sheep breeds developed lesions, but those on the Merino sheep were always larger than those on the Dorper sheep at the same intervals after infestation. None of the goats developed lesions or showed signs of irritation, or harboured any mites.  相似文献

Sheep scab, caused by the mite Psoroptes ovis, is a notifiable disease in Switzerland. Mandatory prophylactic treatments are carried out in spring for all sheep grazing on common alpine pastures. Despite these strict control measures the number of outbreaks has been increasing in recent years, raising questions on the spread of this epizootic disease. To improve the traditional microscopic diagnosis, we developed an ELISA for the specific determination of antibodies against psoroptic antigens with sensitivity and specificity of 93.7 and 96.5%, respectively. Using this test, a serum bank, representative of the sheep population in Switzerland (approximately 15% of registered sheep flocks, randomly chosen, collected between February and May 1998), was screened. The prevalence using 16,404 sera was 10.4, and 11.9% of the 2083 flocks were diagnosed as positive. Additionally, there was a significant increase found for mean seropositivity relative to the flock size (P<0.001, linear regression). Therefore, larger flocks had a higher risk of sheep scab, which may be caused by more frequent animal movement. Spatial analysis of the results revealed a region with significantly higher risk (relative risk = 3.5, P<0.001) of seropositivity, where no cases have officially been notified in the period between 1997 and 1999. The next goal is to establish an efficient control strategy based on serological monitoring of the total sheep population.  相似文献

The patterns of insecticide use for the prevention and control of sheep lice and Psoroptes mites, in England, Wales and Scotland, in 2003-2004, were examined using data from a retrospective questionnaire. Overall, 375 of the 966 (39%) farmers who responded said that they treated at least once to prevent louse infestation. For scab, 426 of the 966 (44%) farmers who responded said that they had treated prophylactically to prevent the disease. There were no significant differences between regions in the number of times farmers treated to prevent lice (chi(2)=0.54, P>0.1) or scab (chi(2)=0.16, P>0.1). Among the farmers who applied prophylactic treatment 23% had a subsequent outbreak of lice and 17% had an outbreak of scab. The majority of sheep farmers who used preventative treatment did so in June and July. Where a second treatment was given it was largely in October. For lice, 52% of farmers used pyrethroids to prevent and 70% to treat louse infestation. For scab prophylaxis, most farmers said that they used either the macrocyclic lactones (41%) or organophosphates (36%) as a preventative. For the therapeutic treatment of scab outbreaks, macrocyclic lactones (largely doramectin) were used on 58% of sheep farms. The high national prevalence of sheep scab and pediculosis indicates that current control methods are failing to contain these ectoparasites. The results of this study suggest that a large proportion of insecticide applications take place at times of year when they might expect to be relatively ineffective, and the use of inappropriate compounds for the parasites in question is common. The widespread use of macrocyclic lactones in particular for scab prevention and control is of concern, because of the additional use of these compounds in parasitic worm control and the potential that their overuse will hasten the development of resistance.  相似文献

Ivermectin at 200 micrograms/kg bodyweight given either as a single subcutaneous injection or as an oral drench failed to eradicate Psoroptes ovis from artificially infested sheep. The oral drench reduced the mite populations by 43 per cent within 24 hours but no further significant decline was recorded over 38 days. The subcutaneous injection reduced the mite populations by 90 per cent after 10 days but live P ovis were present on all the treated animals 84 days after treatment. The efficacy of treatment was less the higher the initial mite burden. The injection had no effect on clinical sheep scab, and the disease continued to progress despite the mite mortality.  相似文献

The effects of both temperature and humidity on the survival of the mites Psoroptes ovis and Psoroptes cuniculi were considered in laboratory assays. When P. ovis and P. cuniculi were maintained at 95% humidity, maximum survival decreased linearly with increasing temperature, from approximately 15 days at 9 degrees C to 5 days at 30 degrees C. There was no significant difference between P. ovis and P. cuniculi in the effects of temperature on maximum survival. Adult male P. ovis and P. cuniculi had lower mean maximum survival than any of the other life cycle stages. There was a small but significant effect of humidity on survival for P. cuniculi; LT50 values were greater at 75-85% r.h. than at 55-65% r.h. The influence of off-host survival and the infestation of naive sheep from mites in the environment on the epidemiology of sheep scab are discussed.  相似文献
