Neocortical Astrocytoma in a Dog: Behavioural and Clinico-Pathological Findings

Abstract— —An astrocytoma in a 9-year-old Boxer dog was found on postmortem to have invaded the sensory and motor regions of the neocortex in the right cerebrum. The limbic lobe, internal capsule and corpus callosum were also involved. Clinical symptoms included hyperaesthesia on left side of the body, poor placing response in left fore-leg, convulsions and circling away from the affected side. EEG revealed focal spike discharges which were localized around the cortical area affected.
Résumé— —Chez un chien boxer âgé de 9 ans, un astrocytome a été trouvéà l'autopsie, ayant invadé les régions sensorielle et motrice du néocortex dans le cerveau droit. Le lobe limbique, la capsule interne et le corps calleux étaient également impliqués. Les symptomes cliniques incluaient l'hyperesthésie de la région droite, mauvaise réaction de placement de la patte antérieure gauche, convulsions et tournement de côté de la région affectée. EEG révéla des décharges pointues focales localisées autour de la région corticale affectée.
Zusammenfassung— — Ein Astrocytom bei einer 9 Jahre alten Bulldogge wurde bei der Sektion gefunden. Dieses war in die sensorischen und motorischen Regionen des Neopallium im rechten Gehirn eingedrungen. Der limbische Lappen, die innere Kapsel und das Corpus callosum waren ebenfalls beteiligt. Die klinischen Symptome bestanden in Hyperaesthesie der linken Kärperhölfte, schlechte Bewegungen im linken Vorderbein, Konvulsionen und Fortbewegungen von der betroffenen Seite. EEG zeigte fokale Aehren-Entladungen, die in der betroffenen Rindenzone lokalisient wurden.     

Pyothorax in Neonatal Boxer

Objective: To report a case of pyothorax in a critically ill canine neonat.
Case Summary: A12-day old, female boxer puppy was presented for lethargy, fever and respiratory distress. Pleural ceffusion was apparent on thoracic radiography. Thoracentesis and subsequent cytology and bacteriologic culture of the Pleural effusion, confirmed a diagnosis of pyothorax. Clinical management of pyothorax in critically ill 12-day- old puppy is decribed

Canine histiocytic ulcerative colitis

Objective To assess prevalence, breed predilection, response to therapy and prognosis of canine histiocytic ulcerative colitis (CHUC).
Design A retrospective study of cases of CHUC seen at Sydney University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (SUVTH) over a 20-year period (1975 -1994).
Procedure Case records of all dogs in which colitis was suspected were reviewed. Dogs were diagnosed with CHUC based on colonorectal biopsy and histopathological examination.
Results CHUC was diagnosed in 8 of 57 dogs presented for colitis. All affected dogs were Boxers and six were female. Dogs with milder clinical signs showed moderately good response to therapy. Four dogs were still alive 1 to 7 years after diagnosis. Three dogs were euthanased, one for reasons other than CHUC, and one was lost to follow-up.
Conclusions Young boxer dogs with relatively mild signs of CHUC may respond moderately well to medical and dietary therapy with fair prognosis. Euthanasia early in the course of the disease may be unwarranted. Prevalence may be increasing within the SUVTH referral population.     

Cutaneous Mastocytosis and Mucinosis with Gross Deformity in a Shar pei Dog

Abstract— An 8-year-old Chinese Shar pei dog was examined because of gross deformity of the hind limbs. The deforming soft tissue swellings were associated with mucinosis and mastocytosis.
Résumé— Un Shar Peï de 8 ans a été examiné pour une déformation au niveau des membres postérieurs. Les épaissiessements des déformations des tissus mous étaient associés à une mucinose et une mastocytose.
Zusammenfassung— Ein 8 Jahre alter Chinesischer Shar Pei wurde wegen makroskopischer Verformung der Hintergliedmaßen untersucht. Die deformierenden Weichteilschwellungen standen in Zusammenhang mit einer Muzinose und Mastozytose.
Resumen  Un perro Shar pei de 8 años de edad se examinó, debido a la presencia de vastas deformidades de los cuartos traseros. La deformidad de los tejidos blandos se asoció con mastocitosis y mucinosis.     

Dysgerminoma of the ovary in a bitch

A case of dysgerminoma of the ovary in a bitch is reported. Sex chromatin was not found in the tumour cells.
Résumé. On rapporte un cas de dysgerminome de l'ovaire d'une chienne. On n'a pas trouvé de chromatine sexuelle dans les cellules de la turneur.
Zusammenfassung. Ein Fall von Disgerminom im Eierstock einer Hündin wird besprochen. Geschlechtschromatin wurde nicht in den Tumorzellen gefunden.     

Canine adrenocortical atrophy: review of literature and a report of two cases

Primary adrenocortical atrophy is reported in a 3-year-old female Gordon Setter and a 2-year-old spayed female German Shepherd dog.
Résumé. On rapporte un cas d'atrophie adréno-corticale primaire chez une chienne Gordon Setter de trois ans et un autre chez une femelle castrée de la ram Berger Allemand, âgée de deux ans.
Zusammenfassung. Primäre adrenocorticale Atrophie wurde bei einer dreijährigen Gordon-Setter Hündin und einer zweijahrigen kastrierten Schaferhündin festgestellt.     

Multicentric Squamous Cell Carcinomas In Situ Resembling Bowen's Disease in Five Cats

Abstract— Multiple squamous cell carcinomas in situ were diagnosed in five aged cats. Despite clinical courses ranging from 18 to 30 months, there was no clinical or histologic evidence of breachment of the basement membrane. The condition closely resembles Bowen's disease in humans.
Résumé— Des épithéliomas spinocellulaires multiples in situ ont été diagnostiqués chez 5 chats. Maigré une anclenneté clinique de 18 à 30 mois, il n'y avait pas de signes cliniques ou histologiques d'atteinte de la membrane basale. Cette affection resemble á la maladie de Bowen chez l'homme.
Zusammenfassung— Bei fünf alten Katzen wurden multiple plattenepithelkarzinome in situ diagnostiziert. Trotz der klinischen Krankheitverläufe von 18 bis 30 Monaten konnte weder klinisch noch histologisch ein Durchbrechen der Basalmembran nachgewiesen werden. Dieses Bild ähnelt sehr dem Bowens Krankheit des Menschen.
Resumen  En cinco gatos se diagnosticaron carcinomas multiples de células escamosas in situ. A pesar del curso clínico de 18–30 meses no se observó evidencia clinica, o histológica de infiltración a traves de la membrana basal. La condición es muy semejante a la enfermedad de Bowen en medicina humana.

Bone tuberculosis in wallabies (Protemnodon rufogrisea frutica)

The clinical and radiological signs and necropsy findings in four cases of bone tuberculosis occurring in the Bennett's wallaby are described. The implication of these findings in differential diagnosis from muscular dystrophy are discussed.
Résumé. On décrit les signes cliniques et radiologiques, ainsi que les conclusions tirées de l'autopsie de 4 cas d'ostéite tuberculeuse rencontrés chez les Bennetts Wallaby. On discute de l'incidence de ces constatations sur le diagnostic différentiel de la dystrophie musculaire.
Zusammenfassung. Die klinischen und radiologischen Befunde und die Autopsieergebnisse in vier Fällen von Knochentuberkulose in Bennetts Wallaby werden beschrieben. Die Bedeutung dieser Befunde für die Differentialdiagnose dieser Erkrankung und der Muskeldystrophie wird besprochen.

A Comparison of Some Clinical Laboratory Methods of Estimating the Urea Level in the Blood of the Dog

Abstract— A comparison has been made of four different methods of estimating the blood urea level. Three of the four methods are suitable for use in a practice laboratory.
Résumé— Comparaison de quatre différentes méthodes pour mesurer le taux de l'urée sanguine. Sur ces quatre méthodes, trois sont utilisables dans un laboratoire de clientèle.
Zusammenfassung— Vier verschiedene Methoden zur Bestimmung des Uratspiegels im Blut wurden verglichen. Drei der vier Methoden eignen sich zur Verwendung im Praxislabor.     

Follicular Dysplasia in Adult Black and Red Doberman Pinschers

Abstract— Four black and two red Doberman Pinschers with a slowly progressive, dorsal hypotrichosis were studied. All six dogs developed the hair loss as adults and hypotrichosis was permanent. Skin biopsies showed changes compatible with follicular dysplasia.
Résumé— L'etude porte sur 4 Dobermans noirs et 2 Dobermans marrons présentant une hypotrichose dorsale d'extension progressive. L'hypotrichose dorsale d'extension progressive. L'hypotrichose s'est développée chez les 6 chiens à l'âge adulte et est permanente. Les biopsies cutanées ont montré des images compatibles avec le diagnostic de dysplasie folliculaire.
Zusammenfassung— Bei vier schwarzen und zwei roten Dobermännern wurde eine langsam fortschreitende dorsale Hypotrichose festgestellt. Alle 6 Hunde verloren als adulte Tiere permanent Haare. Die histologischen Untersuchungen zeigten Veränderungen, die einer Follikeldysplasie entsprechen.
Resumen  Se describe la presencia de una hipotricosis dorsal de progresión lenta en cuatro perros de raza Doberman color negro y dos perros de raza Doberman y color rojo. En los seis animales la hipotricosis se inició cuando eran adultos y se mantuvo de forma permanente. Las biopsias cutáneas mostraron cambios histopatológicos compatibles con una displasia folicular.     

The treatment of canine acanthosis nigricans

Long-term corticostcroid therapy produced a clinical improvement in the skin condition of three dogs with acanthosis nigricans. The administration of TSH, and the stimulation of endogenous TSH production, failed to produce a satisfactory response.
Résumé. Une thérapeutique aux corticostéroïdes à long terme a provoqué une amélioration clinique dans l'état cutané de trois chiens souffrant d'acanthosis nigricans. L'administration de THS et la stimulation de la production endogène de TSH n'ont pas amorcé de réaction satisfaisante.
Zusammenfassung. Langzeitige Corticosteroidtherapie führte zu einer klinischen Besserung des Hautzustands von drei Hunden mit Acanthosis nigricans. Die Anwendung von TSH und die Anregung der endogenen TSH-Produktion rief keine zufriedenstellende Reaktion hervor.     

Partial Velum Palatiectomy for the Relief of Dyspnoea in Brachycephalic Breeds

Résumé. On a analysé les électro-encéphalogrammes de 144. chiens atteints d'encéphalite et discuté la valeur de cette méthode d'investigation en ce qui concerne le diagnostic différentiel, la prognose et les possibilités d'apprécier l'évolution de l'affection.
