There is a need to evaluate the different dietary levels of CP and ME needed by the hen and the time sequence during the molt period to feed these levels to simulate a molt similar to that of nature by utilizing full feeding molting procedures. This study was undertaken to determine that nutritional sequence information. The 4-d feed withdrawal molt procedure being used commercially was used to compare the effects of the 3 procedures studied. Very low levels of CP and ME (9.72% CP and 1,103 kcal or 9.72% CP and 1,433 kcal) were fed for 2, 3, and 4 wk to mimic the levels of nutrients consumed by hens during the first 4 wk of the 4-d molt procedure. The equivalent of zero egg production (≤0.3%) was achieved during wk 2, 3, and 4 of the study (postmolt initiation). The hens achieved 50% production during wk 7 postmolt and peak production, 6 to 8 points below the first cycle, occurred during wk 11 of the study. Body weight reduction ranged from 20 to 29%. The lowest energy level fed for 4 wk was not a desirable molting procedure. Full-fed molting procedures resulted in a significant but acceptable increase in cost of feed over the 4-d procedure.  相似文献

In the commercial egg industry the management practice of using feed withdrawal to induce a flock to molt has been under extreme scrutiny. This is because animal rights groups have voiced their concern about using this practice. Thus, about 5 yr ago, the United Egg Producers (UEP) commissioned 5 universities to conduct experiments to develop alternative molting programs that used nonwithdrawal feeding programs to molt laying hens. The studies conducted to date used techniques ranging from feeding hens without added salt in the diet to using readily available, low-cost feed ingredients to develop molt diets that are low in energy level and protein content. The results of these studies indicated that molting laying hens without feed withdrawal could be done successfully. Research at the University of Illinois found that feeding laying hens diets consisting of wheat middlings, soybean hulls, and corn (low protein and low energy) were successful in providing for acceptable postmolt egg production performance and economic benefit compared with using a standard feed withdrawal method. Therefore, after 5 yr of experimenting with nonwithdrawal molting methods done in several university settings, the egg industry has successfully adopted these methods of molting laying hens. In addition, based on the finding of these experiments, the UEP has revised their recommended molting guidelines to state that only nonwithdrawal molting methods will be permitted after January 1, 2006. 1. Two experiments were conducted to assess the effects of lighting regime, dietary calcium source and sodium bicarbonate on production variables and egg shell quality of White Leghorn hens. In both experiments, hens were assigned to one of three lighting programmes that provided evening, morning or intermittent (midnight) lighting supplements in addition to natural daylight. Experimental diets used in the first study were formulated to contain (1) ground oyster shell flour, (2) limestone flour, or (3) and (4) the same +2/3 of the calcium source as hen-size oyster shell grit. The same 4 diets plus those containing hen-size limestone or hen-size limestone and oyster shells were used in experiment II. Additionally, diets in the first experiment contained either 0 or 10 g/kg sodium bicarbonate. 2. Hen-day egg production and food consumption were not affected by any of the experimental treatments. Hens fed on oyster shell diets or exposed to intermittent lighting regimes laid eggs of the highest specific gravity. Shell quality, as measured by specific gravity, was not affected by the addition of dietary sodium bicarbonate. 3. As expected, elevated temperatures (greater than 32 degrees C) significantly reduced egg shell quality. However, this effect was variable particularly in experiment II which used younger hens. 4. The shell quality of eggs from hens exposed to intermittent lighting in experiment II was significantly higher in each of the 4 sampling periods: morning (08.00-12.00), afternoon (12.00-16.00), evening (16.00-20.00) and night (20.00-08.00). 5. It is suggested that midnight lighting programmes provide a means of supporting egg shell quality of older laying hens during the summer months without a significant reduction in egg production.  相似文献

To develop an alternative method to feed withdrawal for molting layers, 2 flocks consisting of approximately 26,000 commercial laying hens each at 478 (68 wk, flock 1) and 466 (67 wk, flock 2) d of age were reared in an environmentally controlled windowless house and were fed wheat bran (WB) diet. Flock 1 hens were fed WB for 25 d, and flock 2 hens were fed WB for 21 d and then fed a mixture of WB and layer feed (1:1, wt:wt) for the last 4 d of the treatment. After that, the birds in both flocks were fed a normal layer feed. The photoperiod was reduced from 16 to 9 h in both flocks. Most of the birds in both flocks ceased egg production by 10 to 15 d of feeding the WB diets. Egg production in flock 1 gradually increased to 11.4% by 31 to 40 d and 71.4% by 41 to 50 d of the treatment, whereas the egg production in flock 2 hens lagged behind by almost 10 d. The mean egg production from 61 to 140 d exceeded 86% in both flocks. The houses in the farm were naturally contaminated with several serovars of Salmonella, not Enteriditis or Typhimurium. In both flocks with the WB treatment, no marked increase in Salmonella isolation from environmental samples was observed postmolt relative to premolt levels. The study demonstrated that feeding hens WB could be successfully used as an alternative to feed withdrawal to force-rest aging hens while not exacerbating a Salmonella problem in a commercial egg-production setting.  相似文献

Molting is used to increase productivity in the second laying cycle of commercial laying flocks. We report here the applicability of whole grain of bitter vetch as an alternative method for molt induction in laying hens. A total of 120 laying hens were molted by feed withdrawal (FW), a high-Zn diet (HZn), a moderate-Zn and Ca-P-deficient diet (MZn-CaP), or whole grain of bitter vetch (BV). Egg production ceased first in FW-treated hens and last in MZn-CaP-treated hens (P < 0.05). The rest period was longer (P < 0.05) in hens exposed to the BV diet, which proved to be comparable with the FW treatment for postmolt egg production. Egg mass for 4 to 16 wk after the molting was greater (P < 0.05) for hens molted by BV than hens molted by the MZn-CaP diet. Egg weight and yolk color were not (P > 0.05) significantly different among various molting induction methods. Albumen height and Haugh unit of eggs from hens molted by BV, for the most part of the experimental period, were significantly (P < 0.05) greater than for birds on the MZn-CaP diet and unmolted hens. In conclusion, use of BV grain as a single dietary ingredient proved to be effective in molt induction and improving postmolt egg production and internal egg quality when compared with unmolted hens.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of microbial phytase on egg production and egg quality in older hens. A total of 216, 63-week-old Hy-line brown laying hens were distributed in a randomized complete design 10-week feeding trial of 3 dietary treatments with 12 replications per treatment and 6 hens per replication. The 3 dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal-based diets supplemented with 0% (CON), 0.06% (TRT1), and 0.12% (TRT2) microbial phytase. Significantly higher hen-day egg production was observed in the TRT1 treatment compared to CON (P<0.05), except during the first two weeks of the experiment. During weeks 3, 4, and 9, TRT2 had a greater hen-day egg production percentage than CON (P<0.05). The damaged egg ratio was not affected. The egg quality parameters (e.g., eggshell color, eggshell strength, albumen height, egg weight, and the Haugh unit) were affected by microbial phytase supplementation (P<0.05). However, there were no significant effects on the eggshell thickness and yolk color. In conclusion, microbial phytase supplementation to the diets of older hens could improve production performance, extend the peak laying period, and alter the egg quality parameters.  相似文献

1. Saline drinking water given to pullets before sexual maturity had no effect on their subsequent egg shell quality. 2. Hens receiving saline drinking water from or after laying their first egg produced significantly more egg shell defects than hens receiving town water. 3. The production of eggs with defective shells occurred more rapidly when saline drinking water was given to 40-week-old hens than to hens during the first few weeks of lay. 4. The high incidence of egg shell defects resulting from the use of saline drinking water was reduced to control levels when hens in early lay were given town water for 5 weeks. 1. Commercial broiler breeder hens lay many eggs on the floor rather than in nest boxes provided. A study was conducted to determine whether feeding feed-restricted broiler breeder hens during the sitting phase of nesting results in a higher incidence of floor eggs and/or retained eggs. 2. Sixty broiler breeder females (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to 6 deep litter pens containing 10 nest-boxes. At 35 weeks of age and for 9 weeks, feed was distributed to all pens at lights-on every second day (fed normally, FN). On alternate days (feeding delay, FD), feed was distributed when 2-3 hens/pen were sitting in a nest box. Behaviour was sampled at 41 weeks of age, for 26 d. Eggs and egg location data were collected daily, and eggs were scored for extra-cuticular calcium. 3. Of 81 instances in which the hen was sitting firmly in a nest box at the time of feeding, on 80 instances the hen left the nest-box to feed, and on one instance the hen laid her egg then exited to the feeder. Of these 80 instances, on 58 occasions the hen returned to a nest-box to lay her egg; on 12 the hen returned to the nest-box but laid no egg; on 7 the hen did not return to the nest box and laid no egg; and on three the hen laid her egg on the floor. 4. Mean floor egg percentage was 13·3 ± 3·2% on FN and 13·3 ± 4·7% on FD days; these did not differ significantly. 5. The mean extra-cuticular calcium score over all pens was 0·9 ± 0·06 on FN days and 1·2 ± 0·06 on FD days; these differed significantly. 6. In conclusion, feeding broiler breeder hens during nesting results in a conflict between feeding and nesting motivation and higher numbers of extraneously calcified eggs, but does not result in a significant increase in floor eggs even though nesting hens will leave the nest box for food.  相似文献

Single-comb white leghorn hens infected with either B4 or C2 strain of Eimeria mitis produced watery droppings as early as day 5 PI. E. mitis infection did not affect egg weight. However, specific gravities of the eggs produced by the hens infected with E. mitis were lower than those produced by the controls. Egg production was significantly reduced temporarily, but most birds returned to production within 14 days. Many of the birds that ceased to lay went through a complete-body molt (56% of the C2-infected hens and 20% of the B4-infected hens). Hens that ceased to lay regained considerable amounts of pigment in their skin, beaks, and shanks.  相似文献

Regular necropsy of samples of laying hen mortality at a large cage-layer ranch revealed significant loses due to osteoporosis. The feeding program consisted of feeding a pullet-growing diet until egg production commenced followed by a change to a laying diet. Literature review and experimental results have demonstrated a requirement for 2% dietary calcium for about 2 wk before first egg is anticipated followed by transfer to a higher calcium level during lay. A nutritional regimen of this design was tested on two paired sister flocks of hens. Necropsy of mortality during the tests showed a striking reduction in mortality due to osteoporosis.  相似文献

Experiments have shown that egg production can be controlled by using a low‐sodium diet. When a diet containing 0.038% sodium was fed to birds prior to point of lay, egg production was severely restricted. When this diet was fed to hens already in lay, production ceased but the subsequent feeding of an adequate diet resulted in rapid re‐attainment of production to a level higher than that of normally‐fed birds. There were also improvements in egg and shell quality. Birds fed on the low‐sodium diet remained in good condition and mortality did not increase.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the welfare level of hens in four molting methods by comparing their behavior, physical condition and performance. In total, 96 White Leghorn layers (72 weeks of age) were used. The four molting methods consisted of 10 days of feeding and the first 3 days of water withdrawal WFW); 10 day feed withdrawal (WF) followed by ad libitum access to a layer diet from day 11, 28 days of restricted feeding (RF) and 28 days without withdrawing their feed (NW). The RF and NW hens were fed a low energy diet. The WFW and WF hens showed two clear phases of behavior during the 10‐day fasting period. Explorative and stereotyped behavior increased for WFW and WF hens just after their fast. Standing‐resting then increased for WFW and WF hens while lying‐resting decreased. In contrast, RF and NW hens did not show clear behavioral changes during the 28‐day molt period. The weight loss of the NW hens was more gradual compared with the other three methods. No significant differences were seen in any productive trait among the four methods during the postmolt period. In conclusion, the welfare level of RF and NW, especially NW, was higher compared with WFW and WF.  相似文献

旨在研究发酵饲料对海兰褐蛋鸡生产性能及蛋品质的影响。以玉米和豆粕为发酵底物,利用乳酸菌和酿酒酵母菌进行发酵。选取336日龄的海兰褐蛋鸡600只,随机分为4组,每组150只,3个重复,每个重复50只。试验Ⅰ、Ⅱ、Ⅲ组的基础日粮中分别添加3%、5%、8%的发酵饲料,对照组基础日粮中不添加发酵饲料。饲喂试验周期为4周,期间测定各组蛋鸡的生产性能及蛋品质相关指标。结果表明,基础日粮中添加不同比例的发酵饲料,均可在一定程度上改善蛋鸡的生产性能和蛋品质,其中:饲喂发酵饲料第2周,试验Ⅱ组的产蛋数与对照组相比显著(P<0.05)增加;饲喂发酵饲料第3周,试验Ⅱ组的产蛋数和总蛋重与对照组相比均显著(P<0.05)提高;饲喂发酵饲料4周后,试验Ⅱ组的产蛋数、总蛋重、产蛋率与对照组相比均显著(P<0.05)提高,并且料蛋比显著(P<0.05)下降;试验Ⅱ组的蛋壳强度显著(P<0.05)高于对照组;试验Ⅱ组和Ⅲ组的哈氏单位显著(P<0.05)高于对照组。综上提示,在基础日粮中添加不同比例的发酵饲料,可在一定程度上提高海兰褐蛋鸡的生产性能及蛋品质,其中,5%添加水平的效果最佳。  相似文献

(1) Tolerance to ad libitum feeding was compared in three genotypes of broiler breeder hens: a standard broiler breeder fed ad libitum (SA) or restricted (SR), a slow growing 'label' broiler breeder (L) and an experimental dwarf heavy broiler breeder (E). Two similar experiments were conducted in two distinct research centres. (2) Feed intake and body weight were measured every 3 weeks from hatch to 40 to 49 weeks of age. Egg production and egg abnormalities were recorded. The number of yellow follicles in ovaries was counted at the age of 32 weeks. (3) Body weight was stabilised at 2.2, 3.7 and 5.4 kg after 24 weeks of age in L, E and SA hens, respectively. Growth of the SR hens was similar to that of L up to 20 weeks and stabilised at a similar level to that of E hens after 30 weeks of age. (4) Sexual maturity was delayed by 6 weeks in restricted breeders compared to ad libitum fed hens that started to lay at 20 weeks. SA hens had low egg production and a high proportion of defective eggs, which was largely compensated for by feed restriction. However, productivity of SR hens remained lower than that of L breeders. (5) Compared to the low viability and reproductive fitness observed with SA hens, the E dwarf broiler breeder tolerated ad libitum feeding and had better egg production, fewer egg abnormalities and yellow follicles per ovary and a higher egg production. However, laying rate was still lower than that of the SR and L groups. Energy conversion (kJ/g egg) from 32 to 40 weeks of age was much higher in the SA group than in the other three groups. 6. The feasibility of feeding a dwarf broiler breeder ad libitum calls for further research on implications of specific IGF and GH-receptor expression at the level of the ovary in dw chickens.  相似文献

1. A quantitative literature review has been used as the basis of an empirical simulation model of the responses in food intake and egg output of laying hens to temperature, light pattern, light intensity, feeding system type, crude protein, methionine, lysine and metabolisable energy. The financial consequences are considered, by the calculation of gross margin of egg value minus food cost.

2. Response to protein intake in an optimal environment is taken as the first limiting factor. Depressions below the maximum are calculated for sub‐optimal environments.

3. The model was tested against a sample of flocks for which detailed records were available, and found to give realistic answers. A FORTRAN program was written which calculates egg output and food intake by 4‐week production periods, permitting the user to examine the effects of management changes made during lay. Shortened versions of the model, based on annual values have been written for a programmable calculator.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate feeding 2 levels of spray-dried bovine plasma protein (SDP) on production performance of laying hens subjected to high ambient temperatures. Two groups of 96 Hy-Line W-98 hens (38 wk of age) were housed in each of 2 environmentally controlled chambers. At 40 wk of age, all hens were fed 3 diet treatments consisting of (1) a control diet (0% SDP); (2) the control diet supplemented with 0.75% SDP; and (3) the control diet supplemented with 1.50% SDP. Hens in each chamber (8 cages of 4 hens per cage) were ad libitum fed 1 of each diet for 5 wk. The heat stress (HS) chamber was maintained at 21°C (wk 1), 29°C (wk 2), and 35°C (wk 3 to 5). The thermoneutral chamber was maintained at 21°C during wk 1 to 5. A significant main effect of week was observed for hens maintained in the HS chamber for egg production, egg weight, egg mass, and feed consumption, which resulted in acute heat stress causing a reduction in these parameters. Hens fed the 1.50% SDP diet in the HS chamber produced greater (P < 0.05) egg mass on average than hens fed the control or 0.75% SDP diet (wk 1 to 5). During the second week of acute HS (wk 4), hens fed the control and 1.50% SDP diets had greater (P < 0.05) egg production than those fed the 0.75% SDP diet. During wk 5, hens in the HS chamber that were fed the 1.50% SDP diet produced more (P < 0.05) eggs than those fed the control diet. Therefore, based on the results of this study, acute HS negatively affected short-term production performance. In addition, feeding hens an SDP-supplemented diet may have a slight positive effect on production performance when maintained in acute HS conditions.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different molting methods on postmolt production, plasma corticosterone levels, and antibody production to SRBC for the welfare of laying hens. This experiment was conducted with 120 IGH-type Brown laying hens (70 wk of age), randomly divided into 3 experimental groups. The hens in one group were fed a whole-grain barley diet during the first 10 d (WB diet). On d 11, hens consumed 100 g of layer diet/d until d 28. In the second group, hens were fed a Zn diet containing 10,000 mg/kg of Zn as ZnO for 10 d (Zn diet). Hens were then provided 100 g of a layer diet from d 11 to 28. In the third group, feed was withdrawn for 10 d, and on d 11 hens were fed a cracked corn diet ad libitum until d 28 (California method; CAL diet). Hens in all groups were returned to the layer diet ad libitum on d 29. Egg weight was lower in the Zn treatment than in the other treatments. Feed intake and plasma corticosterone levels were higher and antibody production was lower in the CAL treatment than in the WB and Zn groups. The FCR was better in the WB than in the Zn group. Mortality, egg production, and egg quality were not significantly different among the molting methods. As a result, the WB molting program was the best method for postmolt production among the programs examined.  相似文献

1. Egg production, body weight, feed intake and mortality were recorded in over 78?000 broiler breeder hens in 4 commercial flocks housed in 16 houses from early lay though 40 weeks of lay. A total of 420 hens were sampled at regular intervals throughout the laying period to determine the changes in body weight and the numbers of yellow follicles, paired follicles and hierarchical positions with time in the ovary throughout lay to relate ovarian function to productivity. Average egg weight was recorded weekly from one flock.

2. A quadratic equation fitted the changes in time for the number of yellow follicles, body weight, feed intake and mortality; a linear equation described the decline in the number positions in the hierarchy and there was a linear decline in the logistic scale of the proportions of yellow follicles developing as pairs of similar weight. Egg production was described by a cubic equation and egg weight by a line plus exponential model.

3. The average number of yellow follicles declined from 7·2 to 5·4 and the number of hierarchical positions from 6 to 5 from 4 to 40 weeks after photostimulation. The proportion of follicles developing as pairs of similar weight was over 25% at the onset of lay and declined to less than 10% from 20 weeks after photostimulation, representing a substantial loss of potential productivity.

4. Body weight and egg production were similar to the breeder's targets whereas average egg weight and mortality were higher than expected.

5. The relationship defining ovarian function will facilitate the development of an improved model of egg production in broiler breeder hens.  相似文献

1. Three meal‐feeding regimens were applied to cross‐bred layers from 20 to 68 weeks of age. Birds were fed either for 4 h in the morning, 4 h in the evening, or 2 h in the morning plus 2 h in the evening, and egg production and anatomical variables compared with those of control birds fed ad libitum.

2. Food intake restriction ranged from 22% in birds fed only in the morning to 13% in birds fed twice daily. However, egg production of birds fed twice daily was only marginally reduced compared with control birds. Giving free access to food from 69 to 84 weeks increased the total 20 to 84‐week egg production of the latter birds to greater than that of controls.

3. Birds fed only in the evening ate more and laid more and heavier eggs than birds fed only in the morning. However, a high proportion of the eggs from these former birds were laid in the evening.

4. The only anatomical adaptation to meal feeding was the larger crops observed in both groups of birds given one meal daily.  相似文献
