The effects of three stocking rates on fat-lamb production were examined. These stocking rates were imposed upon four grazing systems. The grazing managements had no significant1 effects upon the rate of liveweight gain or the total liveweight of lamb produced per acre, nor were the ewes' liveweights significantly affected. Reasons are suggested. The lambs' rate of liveweight gain was related negatively and the total liveweight of lamb produced per acre was related positively to stocking rate. The ewes' liveweights were similarly affected, there being the highest losses of liveweight under the high stocking rate. In all cases significant differences existed between the stocking rates and there was a significant linear relationship between them. It is concluded that high stocking rates are essential to obtain the maximum fat-lamb production on a 'per acre' basis.  相似文献

The effects of stocking rate and N fertilizer on a mixed sward of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne) and white clover ( Trifolium repens ) set-stocked with sheep were examined. Sward production and composition, and sheep production were studied.
Increasing the stocking rate over the range 25–55 yearling sheep ha−1 reduced herbage accumulation by about 40%, whether or not N fertilizer was applied. Increasing the stocking rate increased the density of ryegrass tillers, but reduced the density of clover stolons and the clover content of the swards. Applications of N fertilizer (200 kg N ha−1 a−1) increased herbage accumulation by about 20% but substantially reduced the clover content.
Liveweight gain per animal and per unit area were greater at the lower stocking rates where the clover content and nutritive value of the diet were greatest. Wool growth per unit area was greater at the higher stocking rates. Applications of 1M fertilizer increased liveweight gain at stocking rates above 25 sheep ha−1, but had no effect on wool production at any stocking rate.
The results demonstrate that a stable and productive grass-clover association was maintained under conditions of set-stocking at around 23 yearling sheep ha−1and that at this stocking rate, which appears to be about the biological optimum, there was no advantage in using N fertilizer.  相似文献

An experiment was started in 1957 that compared the production from dairy cows on daily strip-folding with that from a system of rotational grazing where the cows were given a fresh allocation of pasture about once or twice a week. Management was so arranged that equal areas of pasture were grazed off by the same number of cows in a similar period of time. The experiment was carried out at two rates of stocking, one about 20% greater than the other, the lower rate considered to be equivalent to good close folding practice and the higher rate therefore somewhat restrictive. No supplementary food was given during the grazing season.
At the high rate of stocking, rotational grazing gave an average milk yield of 40 lb./cow/day whilst daily strip-folding yielded 38 lb./cow/day. At the low rate of stocking production was 42 lb./cow/day for both methods.
At the high rate milk yield/acre from the rotational grazing was 1007 and from the strip-folding 977 gals. At the low rate comparable results were 881 and 874 gals.
There was no general trend in yield per cow or per acre in favour of either the rotational grazing or daily strip-folding systems of management. Increasing cow days/acre by 21% decreased yield/cow/day by 7% but significantly increased milk yield/acre, by 13%.  相似文献

A grazing experiment using four stocking rates of sheep, equivalent to 34, 45, 57 and 68 sheep/ha on an assumed 200-day grazing season, was conducted using a portable grazing corral technique. Plots were subjected to fotir grazing periods between mid May and early September. The effect of stocking rate on herbage yield and quality and the influence of these factors and feed intake on liveweights of the sheep were recorded. The mean daily herbage organic matter available over the trial was 9.6, 5.8, 3.3 and 23% of the total liveweight of the sheep at each of the four stocking rates. The highest grazing pressure led to the production of high-quality herbage, but also led to reduced productivity, low feed intake and liveweight losses. The most lenient grazing pressure failed to provide adequate herbage utilization. Even at the most intensive stocking pressure, only 66% of the herbage available to ground level was utilized in grazings after July. Intake results suggested that sheep of 45 kg liveweight required 1000–1200 g digestible organic matter per day to maintain body weight. Despite the higher in vitro digestibility of herbage on offer at the higher stocking rates, intake was limited through lack of herbage; a high degree of correlation existed between herbage availability and herbage intake over the four stocking rates and at all grazings. It is concluded that the portable corral technique is well suited for grazing studies and the assessment of sward response to varying stocking rates and is particularly useful where facilities for more extensive studies are limited.  相似文献

Two successive grazing experiments were conducted over 12 weeks on perennial ryegrass pastures with 50 and 44 young cattle to study the effect of N fertilizer when applied at a daily rate of 1 or 3 kg N/ha. At each level of N two stocking rates differing hy 20% were imposed. At the liigher N level and stocking rate, three frequencies of grazing were imposed. At the stocking rates imposed N tended to reduce the daily liveweight gain per head, but increased the total liveweight gain per ha by from 0.79 to 1.58 kg/kg N. A 20% increase in stocking rate depressed gain per head in both years. In the first year it did not improve gain/ha, hut in the second year gain/ha was increased by 12–17%. There was a tendency for performance per animal and per ha to increase as the grazing cycle was lengthened. In 1969 the highest yield in the whole season was 1880 grazing days and 1260 kg gain/ha. The overall response to N fertilizer was similar to that recorded in other reports, but it is possible that a lack of K had limited pasture growth.  相似文献

An experiment using 40 lactating dairy cows was conducted for 3 successive years to examine the effects of fertilizer N applied at 400 and 700 kg/ha (358 and 627 lb/ac) at stocking rates of 4.94 and 7.41 cows/ba (2 and 3 cows/ac). The animals were grazed in groups of 10 per treatment, using a fixed rotational grazing system, for 22 weeks in each year. Milk ontput/cow and/ha was significantly affected by stocking rate, the mean milk outputs being 2499 and 2218 kg/cow (5498 and 4880 lb/ cow) and 12313 and 16396 kg/ha (11032 and 14691 lb/ac) at the lower and higher stocking rates, respectively. Milk yield/cow at the lower stocking rate was not affected by N level. At tbe higher stocking rate, increasing the amount of N resulted in a 7.4% increase in milk output/cow and/ha. This response to N declined from 1.7% in the first year of the trial to 2.4% in the third year. The response in milk yield to N appeared to he greatest during the first part of the grazing season. Milk composition, liveweight change, and herbage availahilities and intakes were also recorded.  相似文献

The difficulty in matching the herbage requirements of grazing dairy cows to herbage production, due mainly to the unpredictability of the latter., causes stocking rates to be too low for maximum per hectare production and, thus, cows to be underfed at certain times in the grazing season. Conserved forage may be used as a supplement for grazing dairy cows in order to reduce variation in forage intake by the cow, to allow pasture stocking rates to be increased and to increase the efficiency of land use. The effect of offering conserved forage with herbage on intakes and production is reviewed in comparison to both ad libitum and restricted herbage. Total nutrient intakes and milk fat + protein yields are reduced for cows offered herbage and supplementary forage compared with cows offered ad libitum herbage, but increased compared with cows offered a restricted herbage level. Increasing pasture stocking rates may allow increases in utilized metabolizable energy levels from grassland but further research is needed in this area. Both grass and maize silage supplements offer potential for increasing the efficiency of land use, but in the case of grass silage this is only achieved in the best management practices.  相似文献

Tall fescue is the main perennial grass of the pastures of the temperate region of Argentina. However, after flowering in spring, tall fescue loses productivity and quality. Based on this, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of different post‐grazing mechanical cutting managements on the forage mass, leaf proportion, stocking rate, liveweight gain and liveweight production of tall fescue pastures. The treatments were post‐grazing mechanical cutting at anthesis (FC), post‐grazing mechanical cutting throughout spring and summer (SSC), and no post‐grazing mechanical cutting (NC). The experiment was performed from 2011 to 2014 in Argentina. The greatest and lowest forage mass were determined in September–November and May–September respectively. The leaf proportion of the SSC treatment was greater than that of the NC treatment, except in September–November. NC had higher stocking rate and lower liveweight gain than SSC, and neither NC nor SSC differed from FC. The liveweight production of the treatments was characterized by a trade‐off between stocking rate and liveweight gain. We conclude that FC is an attractive management because, with a single post‐grazing cutting, swards remain productive and leafy.  相似文献

The effects of breed, rate of stocking and the creep feeding of concentrates to lambs have been studied when using intensive creep-grazing techniques for the production of lamb fat from the ewe. A grazing experiment is described in which the liveweight gains of small East African Zebu heifers were measured from Hyparrhenia rufa/Stylosanthes gracilis and H. rufa/Centrosema pubescens swards. The design of this trial enabled animal production to be assessed from variations in liveweight gain since stocking rate was maintained at the same level on both pastures, but the overall stocking rate was varied according to seasonal changes in herbage availability.
Production was measured both by using individual animals within a group as independent units, and by true animal replication. Gains from individual animal blocks were shown to be of value for comparing pasture species, provided that the composition of the grazing group was varied. Problems of conducting and interpreting small–scale grazing trials as means for evaluating pastures are discussed.  相似文献

Three groups of Hereford × Friesian steer calves, bom in early January 1969, were strip-grazed on eqoal areas of a sward of S321 perennial ryegrass from May to September inclusive, and received kibbled barley at the rate of nil, 3/4% or 1 1/2% of liveweight per day. Adjustments were made to the number of animals per group in order to maintain the same high grazing intensity (defined as 8 cm stubble height in grazed areas) on all treatments. The animals receiving supplementary barley gained weight at a rate 17–19% higher than the controls, but there was no significant difference in growth rate between the high and low levels of supplementation. The effficiency of conversion of barley was only 5–12 kg per animal liveweight gain/100 kg barley OM. The high level of supplementation resulted in an increase in stocking rate of 36 % over that of the control group, and an increase in liveweight gain per unit area of land grazed of 63%. The additional liveweight gain due to supplements, expressed per unit area of land grazed, was relatively constant at 21–24 kg liveweight gain/ 100 kg barley OM consumed.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted in two successire years to measure the effect of two levels of fertilizer N, 50 and 300 kg/ha (45 and 270 Ib/ac) on the productivity of pastures grazed by young beef cattle. Two stocking rates were imposed at the lower N level and 4 at the higher level. The responses per kg fertilizer N were approximately 1 kg liveweight gain, 20–24 Meal ME and 8–9 kg DM. Maximal yields of about 1000 kg gain/ha (890 Ib/ac) and 19,000 Meal ME/ha (7700 Mcal ME/acre) were recorded. Animal performance was similar on the low and the high N pastures. There was evidence that the chemical quality of pasture was lower on the low N pasture in the first year, but there was no difference in the second year. The numbers of dung pats per ha and the refusal of herbage due to fouling were reduced by Increasing the stocking rate.  相似文献

The effects of different levels of N fertilization (no N, 40 kg N and 80 kg N ha?1 year?1), P fertilization (no P, 21 kg P ha?1 year?1 and 21 kg P plus 53 kg K ha?1 year?1) and stocking rates (0·52 large stock units (LSU) ha?1, 0·78 LSU ha?1 and 1·56 LSU ha?1) on the chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility of the herbage and the liveweight gains of steers were determined in the western variant of the Bankenveld in South Africa. The average daily liveweight gains (ADLGs) of the steers increased with increasing level of N fertilization. Fertilization with P had a positive effect on ADLG only when 53 kg of K was applied with 21 kg of P ha?1. Higher stocking rates reduced ADLGs. The liveweight gains ha?1 increased as the rates of N and P fertilization increased. The medium stocking rate (0·78 LSU ha?1) gave a higher liveweight gain ha?1 than the lowest stocking rate (0·52 LSU ha?1), but the highest stocking rate (1·56 LSU ha?1) reduced liveweight gain ha?1. In general, in terms of chemical components, a higher nutritive value of the veld herbage resulted from N fertilization. The higher crude protein (CP) content of the herbage, resulting from higher stocking rates, should be seen against the background of lower liveweight gains ha?1 at the highest stocking rate. On pasture with similar contents of CP and acid detergent fibre (ADF), higher ADLG of steers was found as a result of P and K fertilization, especially for herbage with a lower CP and a higher ADF content, implying better utilization of the nutrients in such herbage with P and K fertilization, although P was also supplemented through a lick.  相似文献

A nonlinear optimization model of a pasture‐based dairy farm, located in the Waikato region of New Zealand, is used to provide an integrated analysis of profitable stocking‐rate decisions for pasture‐based dairy production, across a range of alternative milk and nitrogen fertilizer prices. Previous research has identified that operating profit increases either in a linear or concave fashion as stocking rate is lifted. This study shows that both views are relevant, depending on the magnitude of milk and nitrogen fertilizer prices. A lower milk price and/or higher per‐unit cost for nitrogen fertilizer reduces profit at higher stocking rates, as the cost of maintaining a larger herd through pronounced feed deficits is magnified. In contrast to previous research, nitrogen fertilizer and imported supplement are shown to be highly complementary strategies under profitable farm management. Model output demonstrates that decreasing stocking rates to reduce leaching, in most cases, will impose a cost in terms of both production and profit. Overall, this work indicates the key importance of stocking‐rate decisions to profitable grazing strategies, relative to those concerning milk per cow. Nevertheless, it is the inherent linkages between stocking rate and the multiple elements of a grazing system that infers this importance, highlighting the need to carefully consider all management levers.  相似文献

The variation in the dietary cation–anion difference (DCAD) and the urinary pH of dairy cows was examined over the year 1996–97 in Victoria, south-eastern Australia. Mineral concentrations in the pasture and dairy cow milk production were also examined. Three farmlets (A, B and C) under different feeding and management systems were used for the purpose of the study. Feeding management was based on grazed grass with stocking rates of 1·4, 2·5 and 4·7 cows ha–1 for farmlets A, B and C respectively. Cows on farmlets B and C received more supplementary feed than those on the A farmlet.
The urine of the cows in each herd was sampled for pH twice monthly, after morning milking. A sample of the feed on offer the previous day was collected and analysed for crude protein, in vitro dry-matter digestibility and macrominerals. Milk yields were recorded on the same day as urine sampling and weather data for the previous day were also collected.
Pasture cation–anion difference was not greatly influenced by stocking rate or associated management practices, although mineral concentrations in pasture did vary. Urine pH was unaffected by changes in climate, management strategies (e.g. stocking rate), season and stage of lactation. Moreover, urine pH was also unaffected by changes in DCAD until the DCAD declined below approximately +15 mequiv. 100 g–1 for two consecutive sampling periods.
It is concluded that when this threshold for DCAD (+15 mequiv. 100 g–1) is breached, even in late lactation, a decrease in urine pH occurs. In south-eastern Australia, the DCAD offered to non-lactating cows in the last 2 weeks of pregnancy, in spring-calving herds, on a pasture-based diet is nearly always above that regarded as optimum in other feeding systems.  相似文献

A new simplified grazing management system has been devized for spring- or antumn-born calves scbednled for beef production at 18 months of age on a grass/cereal system. The new system which can be conveniently described as the two-field system obviates the need for paddock fencing and paddock water installations, is simple to operate and is giving results in terms of liveweight gain performance and stocking rates per acre which are comparable with those from paddock systems. The new system employs the old practice of set-stocking. Two fields are used, however, and these are alternately set-stocked and cut for silage, or vice-versa. It has been found that by using N fertilizer to the same extent as in intensive paddock systems, i.e. around 250–350 units N/ac, it has been possible to achieve similar stocking rates/ac and performance has been unimpaired. No bealth upsets have occurred as a result of applying fertilizers on fields in the presence of grazing cattle over a period of four years at two centres, Jealott's Hill and The Leaths, in trials involving hundreds of beef cattle and dairy cows. This new system of grazing management for beef cattle is now well proven and can now be recommended to farmers as an alternative to paddock grazing.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted in 1971 and 1972 to study the effects of two levels of fertilizer N (50 and 504 kg/ha) on the productivity of pastures grazed by young beef cattle. Two stocking rates were imposed at the lower N level and three at the higher. In addition to rotational grazing, set-stocking and an integrated grazing-conservation system were included. The responses/kg N were approximately 1 kg live-weight gain, 19–24 Meal ME and 8–9 kg DM. Maximum yields of 1200–1300 kg live-weight gain/ha and 25,000–27,000 Meal ME/ha were recorded. Productivity of set-stocked pasture was similar to rotational grazing at the high N level, but lower at low N. The integrated system yielded comparable results to high-N rotational grazing. Performances and herbage intakes per animal reflected the stocking rates imposed.  相似文献

Continuous stocking with sheep at high stocking rates may reduce the content of white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixed grass-clover swards. The present experiment was carried out to investigate the effects on sward production and composition of resting a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)- white clover sward from grazing and taking a cut for conservation. Swards were set-stocked with 25 and 45 yearling wethers ha?1 either throughout a grazing season, or on swards that were rested for a 6-week period and then cut in early, mid- or late season. In an additional treatment swards were cut only and not grazed. Net herbage accumulation was higher at the lower of the two stocking rates and was marginally increased by the inclusion of a rest period at the high but not the low stocking rate. Clover content was higher at the lower stocking rate and was increased by the inclusion of a rest period by 30% at 45 sheep ha?1and by 11% at 25 sheep ha?1 The effect was most marked at the end of the rest period before cutting. When rested from grazing the tiller density of ryegrass decreased although tiller length increased, and clover stolon length, petiole length and leaflet diameter increased though leaf and node number per unit length of stolon decreased; the reverse applied when the sward was returned to grazing after cutting. At the high stocking rate, rest periods in mid-season or later maintained the greatest clover content and marginally increased total net herbage accumulation. At the low stocking rate the timing of the rest period had no significant effect on total net herbage accumulation or on clover content. These results show that the combination of grazing and cutting is of benefit where the stocking rate is high enough to threaten clover survival and limit sheep performance. However, at such a stocking rate, feed reserves are at a minimum throughout the grazing season and so opportunities for resting the sward are probably low.  相似文献

In pastoral farming systems, pasture production normally exceeds demand in the spring–summer period. Consequently, conserving forage at this time for use during the following winter is a widespread practice. The objective of this study was to assess the possible advantages of incorporating flexibility into a calendar‐based haymaking policy. A range of flexible haymaking strategies were simulated and compared against a calendar‐based strategy by using a simulation model to estimate long‐term performance of cow‐calf farm systems under each strategy. The results suggest that controlling haymaking in a flexible fashion, basing the decisions of closing, releasing and cutting paddocks on a simple pasture budget, could give the system productive advantages over using a calendar‐based approach. In terms of liveweight production per hectare, compared at the same area harvested, the flexible approach had higher average annual calf liveweight production (an increase of up to 0.15) and lower system variability [a reduction of 0.10 in the coefficient of variation (CV)] depending on the stocking rate. The results indicated that allocating more than 0.50–0.60 of the farm area to conservation would only be advantageous at very high stocking rates. In contrast to the calendar‐based strategy, making more hay than required for the immediate next winter, where possible, can reduce system variability.  相似文献
