A high number of dairy heifers freshen with udder health problems. The prevalence of teat apex colonization (TAC) with Staphylococcus chromogenes, one of the most widespread coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) in milk samples from freshly calved dairy heifers, was measured cross-sectionally in non-lactating heifers on eight commercial dairy farms in Belgium. The influence of age on this prevalence, and the association between teat apex colonization with S. chromogenes prepartum and quarter milk somatic cell count (SCC) in early lactation were studied. In total, 492 teat apices were sampled from 123 heifers. The age of the heifers varied from 8 to 34 months. Overall, 20% of the heifers had at least one teat apex colonized with S. chromogenes. Of all teats sampled, 10% were colonized with S. chromogenes. The chance of having at least one teat apex colonized with S. chromogenes increased with age of the heifer. The presence of prepartum teat apex colonization with S. chromogenes was not associated with intramammary infection (IMI) early postpartum with the same bacterium. On the contrary, teat apex colonization with S. chromogenes prepartum appeared to protect quarters in the first few days of lactation from having somatic cell count >or=200000cells/ml milk, commonly accepted as the threshold for intramammary infection.  相似文献

Teat endoscopy (theloscopy) is a useful technique for diagnosis and therapy of covered teat injuries. Minimal invasive theloscopic surgery may help to restore milk flow, milk yield, and SCC of the affected quarter.Infection with pathogens may not change significantly, however. Cows treated as described may yield as much milk as their herdmates at a slightly increased udder SCC and stay as long in the herd as their herdmates. Theloscopy also may be used for diagnosis and therapy of various other teat disorders.  相似文献

Relative blood flow to tissues of the distal part of the teat (mammary papilla) in 5 lactating dairy cows was determined, using 15-microns nonradioactive carbonized microspheres. Highest relative blood flow occurred in the epithelial region (zone A) of the teat canal (papillary duct) which comprised both teat canal epithelium and papillated portion of the stratum papillare. Blood flow to these tissues was more than 4 times greater than blood flow to equivalent tissues of the mucosal rosette. The high rate of metabolic activity indicated by this relatively high blood flow may be required to support secretion of antimicrobial substances and continual synthesis of epithelial cells to replace those lost during milking.  相似文献

To determine whether there is a reciprocal relationship between penetrability of the papillary duct of the teat (streak canal) and phagocytic capability, 3 cows with highly penetrable papillary ducts and 3 with ducts highly resistant against penetration were identified, using a penetrability assay. Leukocytes harvested from milk from these cows were tested for their capability to phagocytose Staphylococcus aureus. Phagocytic capability was found to be independent of the ability of microorganisms to gain access to the interior of the mammary gland.  相似文献

A 6-year-old multiparous Holstein cow was admitted for evaluation of progressive milk flow obstruction of one quarter of the udder. Physical examination findings suggested the presence of a mural teat abscess. Ultrasonography substantiated the physical examination findings and delineated the extent of the lesion. Surgical excision of the abscess en bloc yielded satisfactory functional and cosmetic results.  相似文献

Arachidonic acid metabolites (AAM) were measured in milk and plasma during the course of acute endotoxin-induced mastitis in 12 lactating cows. Mastitis was induced by intramammary challenge exposure with 10 micrograms of Escherichia coli (026:B6) endotoxin. Endotoxin was injected into the teat cistern via the teat canal of a single randomly selected rear quarter of each cow. Concentrations of prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha and thromboxane (Tx) B2 in fat-free unextracted milk and of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF2 alpha in plasma were measured by radioimmunoassay. Total production of AAM in milk was determined by measuring quarter milk production. The AAM were compared in 6 cows administered flunixin meglumine (1.1 mg/kg of body weight) and in 6 cows administered saline solution. Concentrations of TxB2 in milk were significantly (P less than 0.001) increased during the early course of acute mastitis in endotoxin-treated quarters of cows not administered flunixin meglumine. Peak concentrations of TxB2 in milk occurred at 8 hours after endotoxin inoculation. Flunixin meglumine treatment produced significant (P less than 0.05) reductions in milk TxB2 and plasma 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF2 alpha concentrations. Concentrations of PGF2 alpha in milk and total PGF2 alpha and TxB2 production per quarter per milking were not significantly influenced by endotoxin challenge or by flunixin meglumine treatment.  相似文献

In total, 308 paired-samples of teat duct material and milk, were collected before and 50-70 min after machine-milking, from 30 ewes. Samples were processed bacteriologically. For analysis of results, we compared changes in bacterial isolation following milking, for duct and milk samples; statistical significance was assessed by the Sign Test. Bacteria were isolated from 18 (6%) duct and 19 (6%) milk samples collected before the milking procedure; respective figures after it, were 81 (26%) and 33 (11%). In 77 (25%) cases, bacteriological findings in the two duct samples of each pair were different; in seven cases bacteria were isolated only before, whilst in 70 cases bacteria were isolated only after milking (P < 0.005); respective results for milk samples were 26 (8%): 6 and 20 cases (P = 0.693). The majority of bacterial isolates were staphylococci, accounting for 63% of 99 isolates. The milking procedure predisposes to entrance of bacteria into the teat duct; however, increased bacterial isolation from the teat did not result to increased mammary infections, likely as a consequence of defence mechanisms present in healthy teats.  相似文献

In cows with teat lesions, partial drying-off of the affected mammary quarter is recommended for a period of 3 to 10 days. The other three quarters are normally milked. Partial drying-off reduces the risks of complications due to the daily milking. The slight reduction of milk production, connected with the temporary drying-off a single quarter, is nearly compensated within 4 weeks.  相似文献

Colonization with Corynebacterium bovis was established in 59 of 64 (92%), 58 of 59 (98%) and 19 of 34 (56%) of uninfected bovine mammary quarters following inoculation of 83.3 X 10(4) colony-forming units (CFU) of the organism into the teat cistern, 4.7 X 10(3) CFU 5 mm into the teat duct or by exposure of the teat orifice to a milk culture containing 1.6 X 10(7) CFU/mL respectively. Mean somatic cell counts for foremilk samples from 122 quarters were significantly higher after colonization with C. bovis (145,900/mL) compared to before exposure (130,900/mL).  相似文献

The effect of postmilking teat dipping with a foaming iodophor agent on incidence of intramammary infections (IMI), incidence of clinical mastitis, somatic cell count and the characteristics of udder tissue and teat was investigated in a positively controlled field study. Two groups of animals were compared. Teats were dipped with a foaming iodophor in the treatment group (TG, 122 animals) while teats in the control group (CG, 121 animals) were dipped with a conventional iodophor teat dip with the same iodine content. A bacteriological examination of quarter milk samples divided the study period in two parts. The incidence of new IMI did not differ between the groups (1st part of trial: TG vs. CG: 6.84% vs. 9.16%, 2nd part of trial: 7.78% vs. 7.82%). There were no differences between the treatment groups regarding incidence of clinical mastitis. We detected 0.64 clinical cases per 100 days in the treatment group vs. 0.50 in the control group. The development of SCC was comparable in both groups. Teat skin and teat duct conditions showed variation during the study period. Clinical efficacy of postmilking teat disinfection with a foaming iodophor was comparable to the treatment with a conventional iodophor product.  相似文献

The following frequencies of change between 30 kPa milking vacuum and atmospheric pressure were used in a milking experiment with single-space cups: 0.05 Hz, 0.1 Hz, 0.2 Hz, 0.35 Hz, 0.5 Hz, 0.65 Hz, 0.8 Hz, and 0.95 Hz. Milking cup pressure and instantaneous milk flow rate through the teat canal were repetitively recorded ten times per second. Four clearly distinguishable and reproducible forms of flow rate oscillations were observed across several sucking phases together with four equally distinguishable and reproducible forms of profiles of a variable milk flow rate within one sucking phase. The occurrence of those differentiated forms of milk flow was found to be correlated primarily with both the sucking phase frequency applied and the average milk flow rate. These findings seem to be indicative of active control of teat canal diameter or milk flow rate by the unstriated teat musculature.  相似文献

The clinical effect of flunixin meglumine administration was determined in cows with acute mastitis induced by intramammary administration of endotoxin. In 12 lactating cows, 10 micrograms of Escherichia coli 026:B6 endotoxin were administered via a teat cannula into the teat cistern of single randomly selected rear quarters. Cows were challenge exposed as pairs. One cow in each pair was administered parenteral flunixin meglumine (6 cows) and 1 cow per pair was administered saline solution (6 cows). Multiple doses (7) of 1.1 mg of flunixin meglumine/kg of body weight or saline solution were administered at 8-hour intervals beginning 2 hours after endotoxin. Cow and quarter clinical signs as well as milk somatic cell concentrations, bovine serum albumin, electrical conductivity, and milk production were determined before and for 14 days after endotoxin inoculation. Intramammary endotoxin produced signs characteristic of acute coliform mastitis. Quarter and systemic abnormalities occurred and milk production was reduced by approximately 50% at 12 hours after endotoxin. Flunixin meglumine therapy significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) reduced rectal temperatures and quarter signs of inflammation and improved clinically graded depression when compared with these signs in saline solution-treated controls. Milk production and laboratory indicators of inflammation in milk were not significantly (P greater than 0.05) different for flunixin meglumine vs saline solution controls. The clinical response observed was consistent with the antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties of flunixin meglumine.  相似文献

Mastitis is a common economically relevant problem in dairy farming. As the major entry for pathogens is the papillary duct, one of the first defence mechanisms is the teat sphincter. This sphincter shows a rhythmic contractility of yet unknown origin. Searching for possible modulatory pacemaker cells, teat sphincters of eight cows were stained immunohistochemically with antibodies against CD117 and vimentin and evaluated microscopically for the presence of telocytes. CD117‐ and vimentin‐positive telocytes with telopodes were found in close contact with smooth muscle cells. Our findings present a first evidence of telocytes in the teat of bovines.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the prophylactic efficacy of a teat sealer, administered at drying off, in reducing new intramammary infections in the dry period and the following lactation. METHODS: A total of 528 cows with late lactation somatic cell counts <2 00,000 cells/ml was identified in three commercial herds. Of these, bacteriological examination showed 482 cows were uninfected in all four quarters and 46 were infected in only one quarter. At drying off, uninfected quarters were randomly allocated to the following treatments: no infusion (negative controls), infusion with a bismuth subnitrate based teat sealer, infusion with teat sealer + antibiotic, or infusion with a cephalonium-based dry cow antibiotic (positive control). New infections were identified during the dry period by periodic udder palpations and at calving by bacteriological culture. RESULTS: All three infused treatments reduced the incidence of new intramammary infections due to Streptococcus uberis, both during the dry period and at calving, by about 90% (p <0.01). The majority of the infections were due to Streptococcus uberis. For all treatments, a 50% lower incidence of clinical mastitis over the first 5 months of the ensuing lactation was reported by farmers. X-ray imaging of 19 teats showed that the teat sealer material was retained, at least in part, in the lower teat sinus over about 100 days of the dry period. CONCLUSIONS: Closure of the teat canal from day one of the dry period as achieved by the teat sealer was as effective in reducing new dry period infections as the infusion of a long-acting dry cow antibiotic formulation. The lower incidence of new infections in the ensuing lactation among the infused quarters implies that fewer subclinical infections persisted from the dry period. Use of teat sealers at drying off appears to offer the same prophylactic efficacy as the dry cow antibiotic approach.  相似文献

Two hundred and fifty-two teats from the udder quarters of 68 dairy cows were studied by bacteriological examination of quarter milk samples and microscopic examination of the teats. Of 252 quarters, 169 teats showed inflammatory changes, while 83 were of normal appearance. The inflammatory changes consisted of either neutrophil infiltrations, mononuclear cell infiltrations and fibrosis, or a combination of these changes. The reaction was restricted to the teat cisterns and/or Fürstenberg's rosettes, but very rarely also in the teat canal. In 136 of 169 cases, the inflammatory reaction was associated with bacteria in the milk, while in 33 cases no bacteria could be recovered from milk, in spite of inflammatory changes in the teat structures. Only 36 of 83 of normal teats were bacteriologically positive.  相似文献

The teats of Brown Swiss and Austrian Simmental cows, divided into two groups, one milked by means of an automatic milking system, the other using a conventional milking parlour, were examined monthly by ultrasonography. Aim of the study was to compare the effects of two different milking machines upon the structures of the bovine teat canal and wall by ultrasonography and thereby evaluate ultrasonography as a research tool for visualisation of different influences on the bovine teat. Length and thickness of the teat canal and teat wall thickness were measured and analysed. During lactation, teat canal length and thickness increased in both groups, teat canal length decreased in conventional milked cows at the end of lactation. Shorter and narrower teat canals were observed in automatic milked cows. Differences between the groups in teat canal length and thickness were determined in early lactation. During lactation teat wall thickness showed a slight increase. Automatic milked cows displayed thinner teat walls than cows milked in the milking parlour. Teat morphology was influenced by the number and duration of lactations, milk yield, quarter of the udder and time and date of examination. It was concluded that the effect of the two different milking machines caused significant differences in bovine teat morphology and that ultrasonography proved to be an appropriate method for visualising influences of the milking technique on the bovine teat.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine milk flow, somatic cell counts (SCCs), and the incidence of clinical mastitis in cows that had undergone theloresectoscopy for treatment of teat stenosis caused by mucosal detachment in the region of the streak canal or Fürstenberg's rosette. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 52 cows with teat stenosis that were treated via theloresectoscopy. PROCEDURE: Medical records of eligible cows were reviewed. Additional data regarding milking ease, SCC, development of clinical mastitis of the affected gland, and whether the cow remained in the herd were collected via owner-completed questionnaires. RESULTS: 49 of 52 questionnaires were completed. At referral, teat sinusitis was diagnosed in 29 of 52 cows. Milk flow was normal in 38 of 41 treated teats at discharge and in 24 of 40 during the next lactation. Thirteen of 49 cows were culled during the next lactation because of abnormal udder health. High SCC and teat sinusitis at referral and development of clinical mastitis during the 10-day period after surgery resulted in high SCCs in the remainder of the current lactation. The incidence of clinical mastitis during the remainder of the current and during the next lactation was higher in cows that had teat sinusitis at the time of surgery, compared with those that did not. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Teat stenoses resulting from mucosal lesions in the region of the streak canal or Fürstenberg's rosette may be successfully treated via theloresectoscopy. Inflammation of the teat sinus and gland at the time of surgery may adversely affect udder health.  相似文献

Radiographs of the teat canal (papillary duct) of 14 Holstein-Friesian cows were made immediately after removal of the milking machine and at 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours. The distal, middle, and proximal diameters of the canal were dilated when the machine was removed. The distal and the middle parts of the teat canal were more dilated than the proximal part of the canal. Two hours later, the canal was constricted in the 3 areas. During the next 6 hours, the canal dilated-the greatest kilation being at the proximal paet of the teat canal. The average lenght of the teat canal remained unchanged. Apparently, microorganisms can easily pass through the teat canal when it is dilated at the end of machine milking and for up to 2 hours after milking.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between morphological findings of the surface of teat duct particularly the level of ceratosis and the prevalence of intramammary infections (IMI). The study was conducted on a commercial dairy herd housing about 3000 lactating dairy cows. We examined 891 quarters in the middle of lactation. Duplicate samples of quarter foremilk were collected monthly. The bacteriological status of quarters was determined according to the recommendations of IDF. At the same time teats were evaluated by clinical examinations. The appearance of teat skin lesions and the status of the teat duct especially the existence of hyperceratosis (HC) was documented. Four classes of teat duct hyperceratosis were defined: without, slight, medium and severe HC. The rate of IMI in different classes of hyperceratosis of teat duct was compared by Chi-square analysis. Prevalences of intramammary infections were determined three times (P1, P2 and P3) during the study period. Prevalence of infection was high for S. aureus (P1: 5.6% vs. P2: 4.5% vs. P3: 4.3%), Sc. agalactiae (P1: 2.7% vs. P2: 2.6% vs. P3: 2.8%) and CNS (P1: 10.7% vs. P2: 8.8% vs. P3: 9.6%). Furthermore we detected IMI caused by other streptococci, yeast, E. coli and mixed infections. A positive correlation between status of HC and prevalence of IMI for Sc. agalactiae was found. At the second and third sampling time the rate of intramammary infection with Sc. agalactiae in quarters with medium HC (P2: 9.21% and P3: 13.73%) differed significantly (p < 0.05) compared to groups without (P2: 1.56% and P3: 1.91%) and slight hyperceratosis (P2: 2.33% and P3: 2.56%). The results of our study indicate a correlation between morphology of teat duct surface, especially regarding to Sc. agalactiae. On one hand HC can cause high intramammary infection rate with Sc. agalactiae. On the other hand it is possible that HC is the consequence of a quarter infection with Sc. agalactiae. Further research is required.  相似文献
