Esterases are a large group of enzymes found in plasma (or serum) and tissues, which hydrolyse a number of xenobiotics. Some of these enzymes have not yet been measured in tropical domestic animals. In the present work, we have measured the activities of three esterases, viz. aspirin esterase, cholinesterase and nitrophenylacetate esterase in the plasma and livers of male and female camels, cattle, sheep and goats. The results indicate that the enzyme activities are highest in the goat, followed by sheep and cattle (which showed broadly similar activities), and lowest in camels. Gender had no statistically significant effect, although males exhibited about 5-8% more enzyme activity in each of the four species, than females.  相似文献

A questionnaire-survey data indicated that 26% of 276 farmers reported the presence of respiratory disease in their herds in 2001. The incidence was perceived as "high" in small ruminants and camels, but as "low" in cattle. Simultaneously, 2815 serum samples from camels (n=628), cattle (n=910), goats (n=442) and sheep (n=835) were tested. The peste des petits ruminants (PPR) antibody seroprevalence was 3% in camels, 9% in cattle, 9% in goats and 13% in sheep. The highest locality-specific seroprevalences were: camels 10%, cattle 16%, goats 22% and sheep 23%. The animals had not been vaccinated against rinderpest or PPR. Antibody seroprevalences detected in camels, cattle, goats and sheep confirmed natural transmission of PPR virus under field conditions.  相似文献

1. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the activity, and compare the pattern of distribution, of rhodanese (thiosulphate: cyanide sulphurtransferase, EC. 2.8.1.1) in different tissues of male and female ostriches. 2. Tissue samples from male and female Blue Neck ostriches were assayed for rhodanese activity by the determination of thiocyanate formed by the action of the enzyme on thiosulphate and KCN. 3. Rhodanese was present in all tissues, and the highest activity was observed in the kidney and liver. Other tissues which contained significant activities of rhodanese were the duodenum, pancreas, heart, caecum and rectum. 4. Unlike other birds, the proventiculus does not appear to have an important role in cyanide detoxification in ostrich and, like mammals, the kidney and liver perform this function. 5. The results suggest that the main organs harbouring high rhodanese activity in the ostrich are associated with sites likely to be required in rhodanese mediated cyanide detoxification.  相似文献

The existence of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in domestic ruminants and camels in Sudan during 2008–2012 was investigated. Lung tissues and serum samples were randomly collected from sheep, goats, cattle, and camels at different areas of Sudan. A total of 12,384 serum samples were collected from clinically healthy 7413 sheep, 1988 camels, 1501 cattle, 1459 goats, and 23 gazelles at different areas in the Sudan. They were examined for PPR antibodies using competitive ELISA (cELISA). The overall detected seroprevalence of PPR in tested sera was 49.4%; seroprevalence values within species were 67.1, 48.2, 25.8, 2.1, and 21.7% in sheep, goat, cattle, camels, and gazelles, respectively. The highest seroprevalence (68.1%) was observed in sera collected from Darfur states, then the central states (54.3%). A total of 1276 lung tissue samples (623 sheep, 324 cattle, 220 camels, and 109 goats) were collected. The majority of lung samples were collected from clinically healthy animals that showed lesions on PM in slaughterhouses (95%) and during PPR outbreaks; samples were tested for PPR antigen using immunocapture ELISA (IcELISA). PPR antigen was detected in 233 out of the 1276 tested samples (18.3%). Positive results were observed in samples collected from clinically healthy and diseased animals. The observed prevalence values in each species were 33.6, 21.1, 15.4, and 12.3% in camel, goat, sheep, and cattle, respectively. PPR antigen was detected in samples from different areas; however, the highest prevalence (63.9%) was found in samples collected from the eastern states, then Khartoum state (28%). Trials for virus isolation were done in different cell cultures. Out of 30 IcELISA-positive samples inoculated in primary bovine and ovine kidney cells, Vero cells, the PPR virus was successfully isolated from 15 (eight sheep, five camels, and two goats) samples in the three cell culture types. Using RT-PCR, PPRV nucleic acid was detected in all 25 IcELISA-positive tested samples.  相似文献

Reference values were established for some haematological and serum biochemical constituents in Bactrian camels (Camelus bactrianus) in China. The contents of seven trace elements in the blood, hair, liver, kidney, heart, spleen, lung, cerebrum, cerebellum, rib, ovary, pancreas and gluteal muscle of Bactrian camels were also measured. Some of these values are reported for the first time for Bactrian camels in China. Most haematological and serum biochemical values were similar to those of cattle, yaks, sheep and dromedary camels, but the mean serum albumin concentration and the albumim/globulin ratio were significantly higher than those in other ruminants and the mean thyroxine concentration was half that in dromedary camels. The liver contained the highest concentrations of copper, zinc, manganese and iron, and the renal cortex contained the highest concentration of selenium. The concentrations of selenium, cobalt, zinc, manganese and molybdenum in the tissues were within the reference ranges for other ruminants, but the mean iron and copper concentrations in the liver were significantly higher than those in other ruminants.  相似文献

Rumen ciliate species and composition were surveyed on the native sheep, Friesian-cattle and dromedary (one-humped) camels kept in Libya. As a result of survey, 5 genera including 14 species with 5 formae in native sheep, 9 genera including 27 species with 6 formae in Friesian-cattle and 6 genera including 13 species and 7 formae in dromedary camels were identified. All of the ciliate species and their percentage composition detected from the Libyan sheep and cattle in this examination were similar to those found from corresponding animals in the other countries. Libyan camels lacked some peculiar ciliate species found from camels in the other countries, but had many cosmopolitan species common with those in the domestic ruminants, suggesting that ciliate faunae of camel are easily affected by the other domestic ruminants kept together. The ciliate density was estimated as 105/ml in every host species.  相似文献

Semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) activity was measured spectrophotometrically using benzylamine as a substrate, in the serum of healthy males and females of horses, camels, cattle, sheep and goats. The animals were born and raised in the same area, and the blood collection was made on the same day to avoid variations. Also the concentrations of protein and copper were measured in the same samples. There were no significant gender-related differences in SSAO activity between the tested animals regardless of species. Activities of SSAO in either male or female of horse were significantly different (p < 0.05) from the remaining tested animals. The highest activities (expressed as micromole of benzaldehyde production/mg protein/hr) were found in horses (9.592 and 9.458), followed by camels (3.226 and 2.407), cattle (1.014 and 1.648), goat (0.750 and 0.572) and sheep (0.435 and 0.244). Insignificant higher activities of SSAO were noted in all males of the tested animals compared to that in females except in cattle. The results suggest that horses are endowed with a very high activity of this enzyme amounting to 3-21 times higher than that found in large and small ruminants. There were no significant differences between the levels of protein and copper in either sex of all the tested species.  相似文献

Microsomal and cytosolic preparations of hepatic, renal, ileal and ruminal tissues of cattle and sheep were used to measure oxidative, hydrolative and conjugative biotransformations of 11 xenobiotic substrates. Within species, enzyme activities were generally higher (P less than .05) in hepatic than non-hepatic tissue but, in both species, non-hepatic tissue exhibited considerable capacities for metabolizing certain substrates. Sheep rumen wall (with papillae) was notably high in cytochrome P-450 content (34% of hepatic value), in glutathione conjugation of ethacrynic acid (223% of hepatic activity; P less than .05), and UDP-glucuronidation of estrone (290% of hepatic activity; P less than .05). Sheep differed (P less than .05) from cattle, having lower cytochrome P-450 content in liver and ileum (but not kidney); lower N-demethylase activity in liver, but two- to threefold higher activity in kidney; lower sulfotransferase activity in liver and kidney; and higher glutathione S-transferase activity toward certain substrates. UDP-glucuronidation varied too widely among substrates to afford strong generalization in comparisons among tissues or between species. Non-hepatic tissues in ruminants exhibit considerable capacities for oxidative, hydrolative and conjugative metabolism of xenobiotics. Sheep and cattle differ widely in hepatic and non-hepatic capacities for biotransforming certain xenobiotics.  相似文献

Serological evidence of Ife virus infection was observed in cattle, sheep, goats and camels in both ecological zones of Sokoto and Kaduna States of Nigeria. The antibody prevalence rates differed between species and between zones, being highest in the guinea savanna. 为了查清巴彦淖尔市辖区内畜禽寄生虫的感染、分布情况、流行与危害程度,提高防治效果,开展了本次畜禽寄生虫感染调查。调查采取生前临床检查、血液学检查、动物解剖、收集虫体、分类鉴定等方法,在全市7个旗、县、区,共66个乡镇选取羊386只(其中绵羊238只、山羊148只)、牛12头、骆驼8峰、猪11头、马驴8匹、鸡16只、兔10只,于实验室内解剖收集虫体,进行分类鉴定。调查结果显示,羊感染内外寄生虫53个种,牛、骆驼26个种,马属动物39个种,猪8个种,鸡5个种,兔7个种;畜禽寄生虫病在巴彦淖尔市较为普遍,感染率较高,危害也较为严重。本次调查不仅为我市进一步防治畜禽寄生虫病提供了依据,而且也对其他地区防治寄生虫病及寄生虫感染具有参考价值和指导作用。  相似文献

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne disease, usually present as a symptomatic disease but can cause various clinical signs ranged from mild fever to severe encephalitis and death in various animals and humans. In Egypt, the epidemiological data about WNV infection in different animal species particularly in domestic ruminants are scarce. The present study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of WNV in cattle, buffalo, camel, sheep, and goats at some Governorates northern Egypt. In total, 360 serum samples (100 cattle, 50 buffalo, 50 camels, 85 sheep, and 75 goats) were examined using ELISA. The results revealed that the seroprevalence of WNV among ruminants was highly significant (P = 0.03) at Kafr El Sheikh Governorate (17.6%) in comparison with other the Governorates. Besides, the seroprevalence of WNV antibodies significantly differed between the examined species (P = 0.0001); it was 22%, 0%, 40%, 3.5%, and 5.3% in cattle, buffalo, camel, sheep, and goats, respectively. This is the first study to confirm that domestic ruminants act as a reservoir in the epidemiology of WNV infection and represent a risk for human and equine infections in Egypt.

This study was performed to investigate the presence of bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1), bovine leukemia virus (BLV) and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infections in dromedary camels (Camelus dromaderius) kept in mixed herds with sheep and goats in Algeria, since the prevalence of BHV-1, BVDV, and BLV infections among dromedary camels in Algeria is unknown. Totally, 111 camel sera were collected from two provinces (Laghouat and Ghardaia) in Algeria. The sera were analyzed for BHV-1 specific antibodies, BVDV specific antibodies and BVDV antigen using the ELISA, and BLV nucleic acid using PCR. The seropositivity rate was 9.0% for BVDV-specific antibody, although 41.4% of camels tested were positive for BVDV antigen. Moreover, there was no evidence of BHV-1 and BLV infections. The results indicated that camels might represent an important source for BVDV infection in all ruminants, including cattle, sheep, and goats bred in mixed herds in Algeria, since they had a higher BVDV prevalence rates. Therefore, the prevention and control measures for BVDV infection should put in place in camel populations to limit the spread of BVDV infection to ruminant populations in Algeria.  相似文献

The properties of fructose-1.6-disphosphatase in supernatant of homogenate of liver, kidneys, and adductor muscles of cattle were tested. EDTA was found to activate the enzyme up to concentrations of 10 mMol. The pH optimum was 7.5 in the presence of EDTA. Even lower concentrations of magnesium ions caused activation of the enzyme, but an activating effect was obtained as well from relatively high Mg concentrations. Fructose-1.6-diphosphatase could by activated also by 0.2 mMol Mn or Co ions or 1 mMol Zn ions. Inhibitive action was obtained from Cu, Cd, Pb, and Hg ions. Microsomal fractions of cattle liver and kidney caused high activity of glucose-6-phosphatase, but only low action was obtained be using microsomal fractions of mesenteric mucous membrane or brain. Mg ions, basically, failed to trigger activation, and higher concentrations even caused inhibition. The relatively high activity of both fructose-1.6-diphosphatase and glucose-6-phosphatase in kidney of cattle appeared to suggest an involvement of those enzymes in gluconeogenesis.  相似文献

The radioisotopic method of 131J-labelled albumin was employed to determine the distribution of acidic proteinase activity in some organs and tissues of chickens. The highest enzymatic activities were found in intestine wall, in pancreas, and in liver. Considerably lower activities were ascertained in kidneys, brain, lungs, and heart. The different proportions of these enzymes in homogenates and supernatant fractions (106 000 g) testify to a lack of uniformity in the solubility of cathepsins in the organs tested. The tested organs, with the exception of pancreas, did not show any enzymatic activity of neutral proteinases.  相似文献

Neutrophils from newborn calves have been shown to be deficient in ability to generate superoxide anion (O2-) after stimulation of the respiratory burst enzyme with the phorbol ester, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). This compound activates the O(2-)-generating enzyme of bovine neutrophils through a pathway involving protein kinase C (PKC). To investigate the biochemical basis underlying this functional difference between neutrophils from newborn and adult cattle, we measured and compared the activity of the enzyme PKC in nonstimulated and PMA-stimulated bovine neutrophils. Neutrophils from newborn calves (n = 5) and adult cows (n = 5) were stimulated with various concentrations of PMA (0, 10, 100, and 500 ng/ml) for 3 minutes, and PKC activity was assayed in the cytosolic and the membrane fractions. In nonstimulated cells, most PKC activity was detected in the cytosolic fraction of neutrophils from newborn and adult cattle. Activity of PKC in the cytosol was dependent on the presence of added calcium and phospholipids, whereas membrane-associated PKC in nonstimulated cells did not have such dependence. Significant differences in PKC activity were not observed between newborn and adult cattle in either the cytosolic or the membrane fractions from nonstimulated cells. Stimulation with PMA caused redistribution of PKC activity in the cell (translocation) in newborns and adults, consisting of decrease in cytosolic PKC activity and increase in membrane-associated PKC activity. Similar to that in nonstimulated cells, PKC activity in cytosolic fractions from PMA-stimulated neutrophils was dependent on the presence of cofactors (calcium and phospholipids), whereas PKC activity in the membrane did not have such requirement.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The winter grazing of wild ruminants on mantles of slate waste in the Harz mountains and in Gera county were richest in Mn whereas those on mantles of granite waste in the Erzgebirge were poorest. The flora of the shell-limestone, keuper and loess areas contains much less Mn than that of those acid habitats. The Mn-requirement of the wild ruminants grazing in the forests is met however, since bilberry plants (2,080 mg/kg), spruce twigs (984 mg/kg), spruce bark (827 mg/kg), oak twigs (791 mg/kg) and heather (754 mg/kg dry matter) in addition to many other plant species store extremely high amounts of Mn. Solely sallow twigs were poor in Mn (28 mg/kg). Based on 601 samples examined, the Mn supply of wild ruminants is extensively described. The rumen content reflected the plentiful Mn-supply of the wild ruminants living in forests (greater than 400 mg/kg) and the far worse one of field roes, particularly in Mn-deficiency areas for domesticated ruminants (mantle of shell-limestone waste 37 mg Mn/kg dry matter of rumen content). The indicator organs of the Mn-status (liver, covering hair, kidneys) verify the statements made concerning red deer, fallow deer and mouflons, of which a total of 170 head from 14 biotopes were examined. An Mn-deficit of field roes in Mn-deficiency habitats in winter cannot completely be excluded. Mouflons have not yet been able to adapt themselves to the excessive Mn-supply of the acid forest habitats in Central Europe. They stored significantly higher amounts of Mn in liver, covering hair, kidneys, cerebrum and ribs than the other wild ruminants and sheep and cattle. The normal Mn-content of the liver and the cerebrum of red deer, fallow deer and roes corresponds to that of sheep and cattle. Roes and fallow deer have winter covering hair poor in Mn (less than 4.0 mg/kg) in comparison to sheep and cattle.  相似文献

Kidneys and urine of cattle, swine, sheep and chickens were tested for bacterial growth inhibitors using Bacillus subtilis and Sarcina lutea as test organisms. Results were as follows: 211 beef kidneys four positive, 611 swine kidneys five positive, 27 sheep and 120 chicken kidneys all negative, 2108 beef urine 76 positive, 2409 swine urine 186 positive, 176 sheep urine 17 positive. Strongest reactions were obtained with B. subtilis on phosphate buffered pH 6.0 plates. Larger zones were produced by urine from injected animals than by tissue samples.  相似文献

SUMMARY Neutralising antibody to Akabane virus was shown to develop in cattle in northern Australia throughout the year and also on the east coast of New South Wales in the summer during 1975/1976. Other species found to have antibody to Akabane virus were buffaloes, horses, camels and sheep, but no antibody was found in domestic chickens, ducks, wallabies or man. The biting midge Culicoides brevitarsis has been detected in all the major areas where antibody was demonstrated in this study.  相似文献
