The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of different carotenoid sources/concentrations and temperature on goldfish (Carassius auratus) skin pigmentation. In the first trial (trial A), the effect of carotenoid source (natural – microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and synthetic – Carophyll Pink) and carotenoid concentration (45, 80 and 120 mg pigment kg?1 diet) was tested. Six homogeneous duplicate groups of juvenile goldfish (7.4 g) were fed, for 5 weeks, one of the diets containing 45, 80 or 120 mg of total pigments of C. vulgaris biomass or synthetic astaxanthin per kg of diet (Cv45, Cv80, Cv120, Ax45, Ax80, Ax120), respectively. In trial B, the effect of water temperature on skin pigmentation was studied. Five homogeneous duplicate groups of 25 goldfish each (5.2 g) were fed diet Ax45 over 9 weeks, to test the following temperatures: 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30 °C. At the end of both trials, samples of skin along the dorsal fin were withdrawn for subsequent analysis of total carotenoid content, intensity of colour, red and yellow hue and visual observation. The best carotenoid concentrations were achieved with astaxanthin diets. There was a tendency to an overall improvement of colour parameters (L and b) in fish fed diets with high levels of C. vulgaris. The results indicated that the best temperature range to maximize skin pigmentation was 26–30 °C.  相似文献

To compare the effect of polyculture against conventional monoculture on ornamental carp production, investigations on food selection and growth performance of koi carp (K), Cyprinus carpio L. and goldfish (G), Carassius auratus (L.) were conducted in a 11‐week rearing experiment in two monoculture (100% K and 100% G) and five polyculture (90% K–10% G, 70% K–30% G, 50% K–50% G, 30% K–70% G and 10% K–90% G) conditions in tropical ponds. There were three replicates for each treatment. Environmental conditions and food availability were similar in all the treatments. Ivlev's electivity index showed that both fish species avoided phytoplankton and preferred cladocerans to other zooplankton groups (copepods and rotifers) in monotypic conditions. However, in the polyculture treatments, the positive electivity of goldfish towards cladocerans reduced significantly (P<0.05), while the percentage of copepods, rotifers and phytoplankton in the gut content increased. No significant differences in weight gain, specific growth rate and deformities were recorded at harvest for koi carp between the different treatments (P>0.05). Even the survival rate of koi carp recorded above 90% in all the treatments. However, the goldfish recorded significantly better weight gain, specific growth rate and survival in monoculture (100% G), compared with the polyculture treatments (P<0.05). Goldfish deformities were lowest (P<0.05) in the monoculture treatment (2.42%). The number of marketable fish above a set size limit of 4 g total weight was significantly higher in the two monoculture treatments, compared with the five polyculture treatments (P<0.05). Keeping in view of the dietary similarities of koi carp and goldfish, and the aggressive nature of koi carp in polyculture, it is suggested to refrain from polyculture of goldfish and koi carp until further documentations relating to optimum stocking density and management of polyculture of ornamental carps are available.  相似文献

Discovering natural carotenoids for colour enhancement and health benefits of fish is important to develop new feed formulations. We have purified natural bixin from achiote seeds and evaluated the effect of colour enhancing and pigmentation in goldfish. Varying levels of bixin‐based diets were prepared with 420 g kg?1 of crude protein and 120 g kg?1 of lipid content. Our results clearly showed that bixin (0.05, 0.10, 0.20 and 0.60 g kg?1) based diets significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced the skin and fin colour at 30 and 60 days compared to diet without bixin. Interestingly, diet which contains 0.20 g kg?1 bixin and commercial feed (with astaxanthin) had similar effect on carotenoid deposition in skin. Moreover, total carotenoid deposition in fin was higher than in skin of all bixin‐containing diets. However, 0.60 g kg?1 bixin‐containing diet had lower specific growth rate (1.01 ± 0.01) and higher feed conversion ratio (2.05 ± 0.19) compared to the control group. The present results demonstrate that achiote bixin can be successfully used as an alternative natural carotenoid source against synthetic astaxanthin in fish feed. Our data indicate that 0.20 g kg?1 is a suitable dietary level of bixin to ensure strong pigmentation, acceptable growth and feed utilization in goldfish.  相似文献

A study was carried out to investigate the effects of background colour on the growth performance, skin colour, haematology, physiological condition and non‐specific immune responses of goldfish, Carassius auratus. Goldfish were reared in tanks with four different background colours (white, black, blue and red) for 8 weeks. Fish growth performance markedly rose in white background compared with the other treatments. There was no significant difference in haematological parameters or plasma proteins concentrations between treatments. Plasma cortisol of fish reared in red background was significantly higher than that in black and white backgrounds. Plasma antiprotease and lysozyme activities were more than doubled in white and black treatments compared with the red and blue groups. The other immune parameters tested (plasma peroxidase, complement and bactericidal activities) did not significantly change between treatments. Skin carotenoid content and the intensity of fish skin colour extremely diminished in white background. This study revealed that red and blue backgrounds are chronically stressful and immunosuppressive in goldfish. White backgrounds will preferably be used for the culture of goldfish for best fish growth. However, a way to revert the colour loss of goldfish skin reared in white backgrounds remains to be investigated.  相似文献

The present study investigates the effects of dietary carotenoid sources on the coloration of the red porgy, Pagrus pagrus. Red porgies (131.9 ± 16.2 g; mean ± SD) were fed for 12 weeks on five different diets supplemented with red carotenoids (mainly astaxanthin esters) supplied from Haematococcus pluvialis algae and yellow carotenoids (mainly β‐carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin) supplied from Alfalfa, Medicago sativa L. and Spirulina, Spirulina pacifica. The carotenoid‐supplemented diets did not have any marked effect on the growth rate, the feed conversion ratio, the daily feeding rate, or the hepatosomatic index of red porgy. The biochemical indices measured in plasma including cholesterol, total proteins, glucose, lactate, phospholipids, non‐esterified fatty acids, triglycerides, and thyroid hormones did not differ significantly among groups. Diet did not affect significantly the melanophore‐area coverage, the melanin skin concentration and skin lightness. Carotenoid‐supplemented diets affected significantly the carotenoid deposition in the skin, the presence and distribution of erythorphores and xanthophores, and skin hue and chroma. Overall, data have shown the efficacy of Haematococcus algae in promoting a reddish coloration in red porgy.  相似文献

This study presents data on the effect of carotenoid sources on skin coloration of red porgy (Pagrus pagrus). Three experiments were conducted: in the first, fish were fed an astaxanthin (Naturose®)‐supplemented diet, while the second fish received diets supplemented with β‐carotene (Rovimix β‐caroten®) or lycopene (Lyc‐O‐Mato®): Carotenoids were added to the level of 100 ppm in each diet, while a non‐carotenoid‐supplemented diet served as a control. In the third experiment, the effect of dietary protein/carbohydrate ratio on melanin content in the skin was investigated. For this experimentation, four diets were formulated to contain 50/23, 40/32, 30/48 and 20/59 protein/carbohydrate ratio. Naturose® astaxanthin increased total carotenoid content in the dorsal skin area while β‐carotene and lycopene seem to have had no significant effect. Naturose® was the only carotenoid source that had a significant effect on skin hue, promoting a reddish coloration to the dorsal skin area and a ventral hue similar to wild red porgy. No apparent effect of carotenoid source on skin melanin content was observed. In contrast, dietary protein/carbohydrate ratio affected melanin content in the skin. The fish fed the 50/23 diet showed significantly higher values. Farmed red porgy had eight times higher dorsal‐skin melanin content than wild ones.  相似文献

One of the bottlenecks in Israel's cold water ornamental fish industry is the large loss of fish during the post-larval stage. As a first step towards increasing survival rates, the optimal stocking density in earthen ponds for fry of each species should be determined. The results of five consecutive experiments with fry of goldfish (Carassius auratus), common carp and koi (respectively, edible and ornamental morphotypes of Cyprinus carpio) are presented here. The experiments were run in 18 cages of 1 m3 and 0.8 mm mesh size placed in a 0.02 ha earthen pond, stocked at 50,100 and 200 fry per cage. The variables analyzed were growth rate, harvesting weight, biomass and survival. Equations to estimate growth rates under different conditions are given. The three fish types present different growth rates and survival patterns in relation to stocking density and season, which lead to different management implications. Koi can be stocked up to 2 million fry per ha without showing negative density effects. Goldfish should be stocked at low density (500,000–1 million fry per ha) in spring and at higher rate (2 million fry per ha) in summer. Common carp stocking density should be adjusted to obtain the required fish size at harvest.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of the addition of microalgae (Ankistrodesmus gracilis and Haematococcus pluvialis) to the fish diet in improving the growth and optimal pigmentation (red carotenoid) of Hyphessobrycon eques. The basal mixed diets consisted of a formulated diet, supplemented with dried microalgae biomass of A. gracilis (1.5 g kg?1) and H. pluvialis (1.5 g kg?1). The live food diets contained zooplankton was cultured in open ponds, associated with microalgae. All the microalgae were cultured in the laboratory. No mortality was observed with any experimental diets. Fish performance results showed significant differences (< 0.05) between the basal diet (BD) and the live food diet. The higher weight and total length were observed with mixed diets (BD + H. pluvialis and BD + A. gracilis). The mixed diets promoted more intense values of chroma (Cab*), lightness (L*) and redness (a*) to H. eques. Diaphanosoma birgei (Cladocera) represented more than 32% of zooplankton ingested by ornamental fish in live food (zooplankton and zooplankton + microalgae), and Argyrodiaptomus furcatus (Copepoda) was the species most ingested by H. eques in live food dietary treatment zooplankton. The feeding behaviour observed in the laboratory as well as the food preferences of H. eques was dependent on the zooplankton composition present in the used open ponds. This study showed that diets with microalgae and zooplankton were able to enhance the pigmentation of H. eques, being a good tool to benefit the culture management of this species.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of Haematococcus pluvialis (H. pluvialis) (carotenoid source) and H. pluvialis plus soy lecithin on development, carotenoid content, and pigmentation of shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). One hundred and eighty shrimps (7.8 g) were divided in six tanks (n = 30) and fed with control food, H. pluvialis, and H. pluvialis plus soy lecithin for 2 weeks. Carotenoids were extracted with acetone and quantified by UV–vis spectrophotometry, and astaxanthin was determined by high‐performance liquid chromatography. Colour was analysed by colorimetry. Lecithin/H. pluvialis group presented higher survival rate (100%) when compared to control group (93.3%). Haematococcus pluvialis and lecithin/H. pluvialis groups presented higher red‐like colour (a* 16.4 and 19.9) than control (a* 20.6). Lecithin/H. pluvialis group presented higher carotenoids content (8.2 mg kg?1 muscle, 26.8 mg kg?1 exoskeleton) and astaxanthin (8.5 mg kg?1 muscle, 23.3 mg kg?1 exoskeleton) than control (carotenoids: 4.2 mg kg?1 muscle, 12.3 mg kg?1 exoskeleton; astaxanthin: 3.2 mg kg?1 muscle, 8.1 mg kg?1 exoskeleton). Feeding with 60 ppm carotenoids (from H. pluvialis) during 2 weeks was sufficient for favouring red‐like pigmentation in shrimp, and lecithin increased astaxanthin content only in exoskeleton.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the addition of astaxanthin from red yeast, Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous, in the diets of goldfish, Carassius auratus. The first was designed to investigate the distribution of pigments in different tissues of goldfish and the effect of astaxanthin in the diet. The carotenoid concentration of tissues was not homogenous. The content of pigments in fish caudal fin was the highest followed by those of scales and head. Flesh had the least carotenoid deposition. Fish fed the diet containing 60 mg/kg astaxanthin had increased concentration of pigment in its head (22.6%), scales (45.5%), flesh (31.0%), and fin (21.2%), compared to fish fed basal diet (P < 0.05). Sixty parts per million astaxanthin had no effect on the weight gain and survival rate. High‐performance liquid chromatography analysis showed astaxanthin in its esterified form in goldfish. The second experiment was aimed at determining the dietary level of astaxanthin that improved color of goldfish. Goldfish were fed the same diet supplemented with 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, and 80 mg yeast astaxanthin/kg for 60 d. The deposition of carotenoids in goldfish fed diets supplemented with astaxanthin increased significantly (P < 0.05) after 15 d of feeding compared to that of the fish fed the diet without astaxanthin, but the effect of dosage of astaxanthin in the diets on the color of goldfish was not completely evident until Day 60 (P < 0.05). During the period of 15–45 d, the deposition of pigments in fish did not increase significantly (P > 0.05) in any treatment with the exception of the diet with 40 mg yeast astaxanthin/kg.  相似文献

The crucian carp, Carassius carassius (L.), is a small fish of restricted distribution in the UK, which is probably only native to central and eastern England. The crucian carp is endemic to northern Europe. It has been widely confused with the introduced and congeneric goldfish, Carassius auratus (L.), and forms hybrids with that species and the introduced Cyprinus carpio L. The status of this fish has become confused with the presence of the congener and its hybrids, and it is now thought to be less frequent in occurrence than formerly.  相似文献

Hybrids of koi, Cyprinus carpio × crucian carp, Carassius carassius and koi × goldfish, Carassius auratus, proved to be susceptible to koi herpesvirus (KHV, syn. CyHV‐3) and developed KHV disease (KHVD). While hybrids of koi × goldfish were partly resistant to mortality following infection by immersion, most koi × crucian carp hybrids died after bath infection. KHV DNA was detected in dead fish but also in all surviving animals by different polymerase chain reactions (PCRs). According to these results, hybrid crossbreeding does not seem to prevent severe losses associated with KHV in terms of inducing KHVD. The present study showed severe losses after a waterborne KHV infection of between 35% and 100% in koi × goldfish and koi × crucian carp hybrids as well as in SPF carp.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted to evaluate growth performance and color enhancement of goldfish, Carassius auratus, fed diets containing 0, 50, 100, 200, and 250 mg kg?1 diet of annatto dye (AD) for 60 days. The survival rate was significantly higher in fish fed 100, 200, and 250 mg AD kg?1 diet over than these fed control and 50 mg AD kg?1 diet (p < 0.05). AD significantly (p <0 .05) increased the pigmentation in the skin and caudal fin of goldfish in a concentration dependent manner (R2 = 0.995, 0.997). The highest amount of total carotenoid deposition in fish skin and fins were given by diets containing 200–250 mg AD kg?1 diet. The highest redness (a*) of 43.21 and yellowness (b*) of 12.53 were obtained by 250 and 50 mg AD kg?1, respectively. The present results show that AD can be successfully used as an alternative natural carotenoid source in goldfish diets at levels of 200–250 mg AD kg?1 diet.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate reproductive ability of backcross triploid koi (Cyprinus carpio L.) × goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) hybrids. These triploids have been obtained by crossing of F1 hybrid females producing diploid eggs with males of parental species. Triploid hybrid females, when crossed with goldfish or koi males, produced mostly aneuploid fish with ploidy range from approximately 2.2n–3.2n with a mean value 2.5n; some fish in crosses of triploid females with koi males were tetraploid (4.0n). Since analysed fish had in their genomes one haploid set from parental males, the data indicate that triploid hybrid females mostly produced aneuploid eggs with ploidy range from approximately 1.2n–2.2n and a mean ploidy around 1.5n while some eggs were triploid. Triploid hybrid males were completely sterile and have not released any sperm after hormonal injection. Despite their low viability, some aneuploid fish obtained from triploid hybrid females were raised in indoor recirculating systems until the age of 2 years and their reproductive ability has been evaluated. One aneuploid female with ploidy 2.1n produced larvae with ploidy range from 2.9n to 3.4n with a mean ploidy of 3.1n when crossed with a koi male; about 60% of obtained larvae had ploidy from 3.0n to 3.2n. These data indicate that this female produced mostly eggs with unreduced ploidy level.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary lutein/canthaxanthin ratio on the growth and skin coloration of large yellow croaker. Five carotenoids supplemented diets were formulated to contain 75/0, 50/25, 37.5/37.5, 25/50 and 0/75 mg kg?1 of lutein/canthaxanthin. The diet without carotenoids supplementation was used as the control. Fish of the similar size (13.83 ± 0.04 g) were fed with these experimental diets for 8 weeks in sea cages. Results showed that there were no significant differences in survival rate, specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio among the all treatments (> 0.05). The ventral skin lightness was not affected by dietary treatments (> 0.05). However, the dorsal skin lightness in the treatment of control was significantly lower than those in the treatments with supplemented dietary carotenoids (< 0.05). The lowest values of yellowness, redness and carotenoid content both in ventral and dorsal skin were found in the control. Yellowness and carotenoid content both in ventral skin and in dorsal skin decreased with the decreasing of the proportion of dietary lutein. Meanwhile, the redness increased with the increasing of the proportion of dietary canthaxanthin. Fish fed with the control diet had higher melanin content in the dorsal skin, although no significant differences were found. Coloration parameters were linearly related to the carotenoid content in skin. Meanwhile, yellowness, redness and carotenoid content were linearly related to the proportion of dietary lutein. In conclusion, under present conditions, both lutein and canthaxanthin are needed in the diet for large yellow croaker. Compared to the lutein, higher dietary canthaxanthin contents are better for the skin redness.  相似文献

A 45-day feeding experiment was conducted to measure the effects of enhancing the diet of koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) fingerlings with lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus (LAD) and/or brewer's yeast, Saccharomyces cervisiae (SCD). Fish with an average initial weight of 0.26g were fed one of four diets prepared for this study as follows: Diet 1 = basal diet (control); Diet 2 = basal diet + 0.5% LAD; Diet 3 = basal diet + 0.5% SCD; and Diet 4 = basal diet + 0.25% LAD + 0.25% SCD. Significantly (P < 0.05) highest growth rate was achieved in diet 3 followed by diet 4, diet 2, and diet 1. The highest gut microbial load and total heterotrophic count were also higher in diet 3 followed by diet 4, diet 2, and diet 1. Incorporation of 0.5% of brewer's yeast in the basal diet significantly (P < 0.05) improves growth performances and gut microbial load in koi carp.  相似文献
