Four herds of pigs were selected which had different degrees of clinical atrophic rhinitis and used different specific counter-measures. In two of them, the clinical signs occurred spasmodically and were slight. The sows, suckling pigs and growing pigs in all the herds were sampled for toxigenic Pasteurella multocida. In one of the slightly affected herds (herd D), the weaners were moved to a second farm for finishing. No toxigenic P multocida were found at the breeding farm, but 50 per cent of the large growing pigs were positive. It seemed that the organism had entered only at the finishing farm and that the mild clinical signs were due to the infection starting in older pigs than usual. In the second mildly affected herd, 47 per cent of the sows and 42 per cent of the growers were infected. Three toxigenic isolates from this herd produced as severe turbinate damage experimentally in specific-pathogen-free pigs as a stock pathogenic strain. Except in herd D, toxigenic P multocida were found in all the age groups of pigs sampled. However, the pattern of distribution of the organism within the herds was not obviously correlated with the severity of the disease. In a fifth herd there were obvious cases of clinical atrophic rhinitis, with marked turbinate atrophy, from which toxi-genic P multocida were recovered in abundance. Subsequently, the clinical disease disappeared and, despite extensive and repeated sampling, the organism was not found again.  相似文献

Endemic infection was a common sequel to primary outbreaks of transmissible gastroenteritis in large breeding herds of pigs in East Anglia. The main clinical features of the disease were diarrhoea affecting sucking piglets aged about six days or more, diarrhoea among recently weaned pigs and brief episodes of overt clinical recrudescence in part of the herd. Post mortem and bacteriological findings were often more suggestive of colibacillosis than transmissible gastroenteritis. In some herds, endemic infection remained clinically mild or inapparent for long periods. Evidence of endemic transmissible gastroenteritis infection was found in 43 (50.6 per cent) of 85 herds of pigs studied prospectively between 1981 and 1983. There was a significant correlation with herd size; the disease recurred during the 12 months after primary outbreaks in 36 (65.5 per cent) of 55 herds with over 100 sows compared with seven (23.3 per cent) of 30 herds with less than 100 sows (P less than 0.001). In the larger herds it occurred more commonly where finishers were kept (P less than 0.05). Sow morbidity and management factors during the primary outbreak had no statistically significant effect on the incidence of recrudescence. Epidemiological aspects of the findings are discussed with emphasis on the difficulties associated with the diagnosis and control of endemic transmissible gastroenteritis infection.  相似文献

Using an indirect fluorescent antibody test, 54 per cent of 734 palatine tonsils of conventional pigs slaughtered in Australia and New Zealand were found to be infected with Streptococcus suis type 1 and 73 per cent of 959 were infected with S suis type 2. Variations in the prevalence of infection in pigs from different herds were thought to be due to differences in the sample sizes rather than to real differences in the prevalence between herds. The prevalence of infection with S suis was similar in pigs of either sex and in different age groups. Streptococcus suis type 2 was detected in the blood of 3 per cent of apparently normal pigs slaughtered at a meat processing plant. The presence of this organism in edible tissue may pose a health risk to consumers and meat-workers. Both S suis types 1 and 2 were detected in the vaginas and uteri of slaughtered pigs and the female reproductive tract could be another site for the carriage of infection. Piglets from sows with vaginas infected with S suis type 2 became infected earlier than piglets from sows with uninfected vaginas. No infected male reproductive tracts were detected and venereal transmission of S suis therefore appears unlikely. Three specific pathogen free herds were found to be free from infection with both S suis types 1 and 2. It is concluded that hysterectomy derived piglets are delivered free from infection, whereas some piglets born to sows with uterine and vaginal infections are either born infected or become infected at, or soon after, birth.  相似文献

A survey of the prevalence of Salmonella species infection was conducted on 59 Irish farrow-to-finish pig herds. Faecal samples were collected from the pens of first-stage weaners (growing pigs approximately three to 10 weeks of age), second-stage weaners (approximately 10 to 17 weeks of age) and fatteners, and from the dry sow and farrowing sow houses. The prevalence of infection was estimated to within 5 per cent with a 95 per cent confidence interval. Thirty of the 59 herds were infected, 12 with Salmonella Typhimurium only, eight with Salmonella Derby only and seven with both S Typhimurium and S Derby; serotypes London, Livingstone and Infantis were each isolated from a single herd. Farms in Ireland are assigned to one of three infection categories on the basis of the antibody levels in samples of meat juice taken at slaughter. When a herd was classified as either positive or negative on the basis of the isolation of Salmonella from at least one faecal sample there was no association between the herd's category as determined by meat juice serology and the probability of the isolation of Salmonella from the faecal samples. However, there were differences in prevalence between pigs at different stages of production in herds of different categories. Farrowing sow houses in moderately infected (category 2) herds had significantly lower infection rates (P < or = 0.05) than other herd categories and other stages of production. Pigs from first-stage weaner pens in slightly infected (category 1) herds were more likely to be infected with Salmonella than pigs at any other stage of production or category of herd.  相似文献

Since 1959, the Pig Health Control Association (PHCA) has run a national health-control scheme for pig herds believed to be free from enzootic pneumonia. During this time, many herds developed this disease without a simple explanation. From 1968, 55 such unexplained breakdowns have been studied in detail. The first signs in 50 breakdowns were either coughing in growing pigs (52 per cent of outbreaks), illness in adult stock (34 per cent of outbreaks) or pneumonia in routinely slaughtered pigs (14 per cent of outbreaks). In some outbreaks, enzootic pneumonia appeared to grow out of a pre-existing respiratory infection, which was not identified as enzootic pneumonia, in suckling pigs, suggesting that either Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae was already present in a latent state, or it more readily seeded damaged respiratory tracts from outside. In three outbreaks of this type, where pathological material was collected during the transition period, no laboratory evidence was obtained for the presence of M hyopneumoniae in the primary respiratory disease. Analysis of breakdowns in two national testing stations indicated that clinical/pathological signs might not develop until three to five months after the introduction of an infected group of weaners. It is possible, therefore, that a pig herd might not show obvious signs of the disease until up to six months or more after initial infection. There was little evidence to indicate that unexplained breakdowns arose from long term latent infection in other herds from which stock had been imported. There was considerable evidence, however, to suggest that breakdowns arose from extraneous sources.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A case-control study of 74 herds with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (pmws) and 74 matched control herds was carried out. In the case herds the mortality rates of weaner and finisher pigs were 11.2 and 5.2 per cent respectively, compared with 3.1 and 3.2 per cent in the control herds. In most case herds, pmws developed within the first four weeks after weaning. Wasting, diarrhoea and respiratory signs were observed in 10 per cent of the weaner pigs (7 to 30 kg) in the case herds compared with 7 per cent in the control herds. The average daily gains of the weaner pigs and finisher pigs were 36 g and 52 g less in the case herds than in the control herds. By examining three weaner pigs from each herd the pmws diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry in 78 per cent of the case herds, but at least one pmws-positive weaner pig was found in 19 of the control herds. The prevalence of pmws-positive pigs among illthriven weaner pigs was 45 per cent (101/222) in the case herds, and 12 per cent (27/222) in the control herds. Specific gross pathological findings were associated with a positive pmws diagnosis; pigs with heavy, rubber-like lungs, atonic intestines, and enlarged bronchial and inguinal lymph nodes, had a 0.7 probability of a positive pmws diagnosis by laboratory examinations. However, for illthriven pigs, this probability of having pmws was equal in the case herds and the control herds.  相似文献

Group A rotavirus excretion patterns in naturally infected pigs   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Cross-sectional and cohort studies were conducted in a piggery to investigate the excretion pattern of group A rotavirus in pigs. The cross-sectional survey revealed that 47 (9 per cent) of 521 pigs sampled were excreting rotavirus in the faeces. No rotavirus antigen was detected in the faeces of pigs either less than one week or over two months old. The prevalence of infection increased with age over the sucking period, and was greatest at five weeks old. Diarrhoea was observed in only eight (17 per cent) of the pigs excreting rotavirus. Sixteen piglets from four litters were selected and faecal samples collected daily from each animal from birth to two months old. All the piglets excreted group A rotavirus and the range of ages at which they first became infected was between 13 and 39 days. The average duration of excretion in individual piglets was 7.4 days. Ten of 13 sucking piglets which excreted rotavirus developed diarrhoea soon after it was first detected.  相似文献

A survey for the macroscopic lesions indicative of pneumonic infection in the pig with Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae was made in an abattoir in eastern England. A total of 78 herds located in 11 counties of eastern or central England were seen between December 1982 and August 1983. Lesions were noted in the batches submitted by 44 (56 per cent) of the 78 herds. A further 16 herds (21 per cent) submitted batches containing pigs affected by pleurisy principally of the caudal lobes but without the pneumonic lesions. Lesions suggestive of enzootic pneumonia were also seen in 61 herds (78 per cent). Circumstances restricted corroborative bacteriological examinations to 53 and serological examinations to 33 herds. Strains of H pleuropneumoniae (predominantly serotype 3 but also serotype 2) were isolated from 26 herds. These comprised 22 out of 42 (51 per cent) of those where typically affected plucks, or plucks with caudal lobe pleurisy, were encountered, and four out of 11 (36 per cent) in which there was either no observable thoracic disease or enzootic pneumonia only. Complement fixing antibodies to serotype 3 or 2 antigens occurred in 26 out of 33 herds (79 per cent). These comprised 25 (83 per cent) of 30 herds with batches exhibiting either typical pulmonary lesions and, or, caudal lobe pleurisy and one of three herds without such lesions. Collectively these data indicate that herds containing pigs with pleuropneumonia are common at least in the more easterly parts of England and that H pleuropneumoniae, usually but not always associated with disease, is also widespread.  相似文献

Seroprevalence of Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae serotype-1 infection was evaluated in pigs on 7 farms in Quebec. Commercial cross-bred herds A to G, ranging from 110 to 235 sows and infected with A pleuropneumoniae serotype-1 were selected. Five pigs/litter were selected at random and were identified (group 1). Blood samples were obtained from group-1 pigs at 2 to 4, 14, 28, 42, and 56 days of age. Blood also was obtained from group-1 pigs remaining in the postweaning unit at 70 days of age, and from 20 to 40 sows 1 to 3 times. To determine prevalence of seropositive pigs in all age groups for the entire study period in herds C to G, blood samples were obtained from 20 pigs/age group (group 2) selected at random at 28, 42, and 56 days of age at each visit. Group-1 pigs were included when they reached 28, 42, and 56 days of age. Pigs were serologically monitored in herds A and B for 3 months and in herds C to G for 5 to 6 months. Serologic status of pigs at 2 to 4 days of age was not statistically associated with status at 42 days (P = 0.6293) and at 56 days (P = 0.3098) of age for the same pigs. Therefore, seronegative pigs 2 to 4 days old did not seroconvert earlier than did those with detectable maternal antibodies at 2 to 4 days old. Only about 50% of the 70-day-old pigs were seropositive at 56 days. Seemingly, pigs seroconverted late in the postweaning period.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Published information on rotaviruses as pathogens, the source of virus infection and the method of transmission of infection under normal conditions are reviewed. The antigenic differences between rotavirus isolates from children, calves, pigs, foals and mice are discussed. Bovine rotaviruses isolated in the USA and the UK were shown to be closely related antigenically and the US vaccine strain protected calves from challenge with the UK rotavirus. Nineteen normally reared calves, with 20 or more ZnSO4 units of serum delta globulin, were susceptible to rotavirus inoculation at two days of age. They developed diarrhoea, showed body weight loss but recovered. Three calves with less than 10 ZnSO4 units of serum delta globulin developed diarrhoea and died. In a serological survey of 654 adult cows and calves from three herds, between 2 per cent and 37 per cent of individuals in a group had low rotavirus antibody titres and were probably susceptible to rotavirus infection. These were found in all age groups of animals studied, whether or not the group had suffered a recent rotavirus epizootic. It was not possible to predict whether an epizootic would develop on the basis of a serological survey.  相似文献

Samples of serum from 76 gilts, 1440 sows, 1473 piglets and 3093 finishing pigs from 96 farrow-to-finish herds were tested for antibodies to encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) in microtitre serum neutralisation tests employing two strains of virus, one associated with myocarditis and the other with reproductive failure. The total seroprevalence of EMCV infection was 2.48 per cent. There was no significant difference between the seroprevalence of the reproductive failure strain (1.6 per cent) and the myocardial strain (1.85 per cent). The seroprevalence was higher in the gilts (6.57 per cent) and sows (5.13 per cent) than in the piglets (1 per cent) and finishing pigs (1.84 per cent), and the highest titres were observed in the sows (1:540) and finishing pigs (1:640). In the gilts, the difference in seroprevalence between the reproductive failure strain (3.95 per cent) and the myocardial strain (5.33 per cent) was wider than in the other groups.  相似文献

During the decade to 1999, the incidence of human infections with the zoonotic pathogen verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 (VTEC O157) increased in England and Wales. This paper describes the results of a survey of 75 farms to determine the prevalence of faecal excretion of VTEC O157 by cattle, its primary reservoir host, in England and Wales. Faecal samples were collected from 4663 cattle between June and December 1999. The prevalence of excretion by individual cattle was 4.2 per cent (95 per cent confidence interval [CI] 2.0 to 6.4) and 10.3 per cent (95 per cent CI 5.8 to 14.8) among animals in infected herds. The within-herd prevalence on positive farms ranged from 1.1 to 51.4 per cent. At least one positive animal was identified on 29 (38.7 per cent; 95 per cent CI 28.1 to 50.4) of the farms, including dairy, suckler and fattening herds. The prevalence of excretion was least in the calves under two months of age, peaked in the calves aged between two and six months and declined thereafter. The phage types identified most widely were 4, 34 and 2, which were each found on six of the 29 positive farms.  相似文献

Data were collected on the housing, management and disease factors in the weaning and finishing units of 49 integrated pig herds, 24 of them with a high incidence of arthritis at slaughter (case herds) and 25 with a low incidence (control herds). A median of 5.2 per cent (range 3.7 to 12.4 per cent) of the slaughtered pigs in the case herds had arthritis at meat inspection, compared with 2.2 per cent (range 0.3 to 2.8 per cent) in the control herds. In the farrowing units, high clinical sign scores for the lactating sows and piglets less than one week old and a low age at castration were associated with the case herds. In the weaning units, the herds with open partitions between the pens were 5.6 times more likely to be a case herd than the herds with solid walls. A higher age at weaning and moving the piglets at weaning from the farrowing pen instead of the sows decreased the likelihood of being a case herd. In the finishing units, a higher score for clinical signs, using a proper hospital pen, disinfecting the pens between the groups and using a feeding plan increased the likelihood of being a case herd. In total, 145 condemned joints, a median of four (up to six per herd), were collected at the slaughterhouse. In the case herds, 71 of 76 joints (93.4 per cent) had lesions related to osteochondrosis and in the control herds 66 of 69 joints (95.6 per cent) had such lesions. Only two of 11 joints from the case herds and one of 12 joints from the control herds that were examined bacteriologically were positive for Stapylococcus aureus and/or Streptococcus species.  相似文献

Six of the seven known serotypes of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus occur in Africa. This paper describes the results of a population-based cross-sectional study of the seroprevalence of FMD and the persistence of the virus in cattle herds and associated sheep flocks in the Adamawa province of Cameroon. Antibody titres measured by the virus neutralising test indicated that serotypes O, A and SAT2 viruses had been circulating in the province. The estimates of apparent seroprevalence in cattle herds, based on five juvenile animals (eight to 24 months old) per herd, were 74.8 per cent for serotype SAT2, 30.8 per cent for serotype A and 11.2 per cent for serotype O, indicating recent exposure; the estimates based on animals more than 24 months of age were 91.1 per cent for SAT2, 83.6 per cent for A and 34.2 per cent for serotype O. Epithelial and oropharyngeal samples were collected from cattle and small ruminants, cultured and typed by ELISA; serotypes A and SAT2 were isolated from both types of sample. The herd-level estimate of apparent prevalence of probang-positive herds was 19.5 per cent and the animal-level estimate of apparent prevalence was 3.4 per cent. The geographical distribution of the seropositive herds based on juveniles suggested that recent SAT2 exposure was widespread and particularly high in the more northern and western parts of the province, whereas recent exposure to serotype A was patchy and more concentrated in the south and east. This distribution corresponded very closely with the distribution of herds from which virus was recovered by probang, indicating recent exposure or infection. No serotype O viruses were recovered from cattle, and the distribution of seropositive herds suggested very localised recent exposure. The apparent prevalence of probang-positive animals declined with the age of the animal and the period since the last recorded outbreak in the herd.  相似文献

Streptococcus suis type 2 was isolated from the tonsils of 143 (76 per cent) of 188 pigs from three herds by culturing on media containing a specific antiserum. Culture of frozen sections of tonsillar tissue was more sensitive than culture of swabs or deep scrapes. The specificity of an indirect fluorescent antibody test for identifying S suis type 2 in mixed cultures was conservatively estimated to be 0.89. The level of infection in one herd without a history of meningitis was lower than in two herds which had experienced repeated outbreaks. Differences between herds in the level of infection were due to differences in the number of organisms carried by pigs, more so than differences in the detectable carrier rate.  相似文献

The seroprevalence of Neospora caninum infection was estimated from a sample of 889 cattle from 43 dairy herds in three counties in the Asturias region of Spain. The true prevalence of infection was estimated to be 30.6 per cent (95 per cent confidence interval (CI) 27.6 to 33.6). Seropositivity was associated with abortion during the previous year (odds ratio (OR)=3.31, P<0.001) and was slightly higher among purchased cattle (37.6 per cent), than among cattle raised on the farm (29.1 per cent) (P=0.078). Seropositive cows were more likely than seronegative cows to have had a seropositive dam (OR=2.3, P=0.011), suggesting that congenital transmission contributed to about 56 per cent of the infections. Herds with a true seroprevalence above 10 per cent had more dogs on the farm, than herds with a lower prevalence (P=0.032). The ORS relating abortion to seropositivity in individual herds ranged from 0.7 to 19, indicating that some herds experienced few abortions caused by N. caninum, while others experienced more abortions due to the organism. Overall, 38.7 per cent of the abortions were estimated to have been attributable to N. caninum.  相似文献

Epidemiology and control of vaginal discharges in the sow after service   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A syndrome associated with vaginal discharge, endometritis and reproductive inefficiency in the served sow is described. In some herds pregnancy failures exceeded 15 per cent with increased returns to service and sows not in pig. Predisposing factors included the age of the herd and the hygiene and management practices from weaning to service and during the 21 days after service. No one organism was implicated but venereal transmission was considered possible. One hundred and ten breeding herds were surveyed and in 26 of these control measures were necessary. These included antibacterial therapy of the prepuce of the boar and medication of the sow from weaning until 21 days after service. Such treatment together with management changes resolved the problem in 22 of the herds. The syndrome reappeared in four out of seven herds where treatment of the boar was not continued.  相似文献

The prevalence of urinary tract infections in calves aged seven days to three months in three dairy cattle herds ranged from 0.5 to 1.6 per cent, with an average of 1.1 per cent. The mortality rate reached 16.1 per cent. The morbidity rate of the female calves was 1.4 per cent and that of the male calves 0.8 per cent. The bacteria isolated from urine, and from vaginal and preputial swabs were Escherichia coli (35 per cent), Corynebacterium renale (14 per cent), plasma coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species (12 per cent), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12 per cent), Proteus species (12 per cent) and Arcanobacterium pyogenes (5 per cent). The affected calves had a significantly lower serum concentration of inorganic phosphorus (P < 0.01).  相似文献
