The distributions, concentrations, and community structure of pelagic larval fishes collected from the central and northern California Current in the northeast Pacific Ocean during May 2004, 2005, and 2006 were analyzed to investigate inter-annual, latitudinal, cross-shelf, and depth-stratified variability. The inter-annual climate-induced variability during the sampling period provided a unique opportunity to observe how larval fish communities adjust to rapidly changing environmental conditions. The 170 depth-stratified samples collected from three cruises yielded 14 819 fish larvae from 56 taxa representing 23 families. Dominant larval taxa were Engraulis mordax , Citharichthys spp., Sebastes spp., and Stenobrachius leucopsarus . Larval concentrations decreased significantly in 2006 from 2004 and 2005 levels following the anomalous oceanic conditions observed in 2005 and decreased water temperature in 2006. Larvae were generally found in higher concentrations at northern (>43°N) versus southern (<43°N) stations, with larval E. mordax and Citharichthys spp. found almost exclusively in the north during all sampled years. Inter-annual variability related to dynamic upwelling intensity was observed in cross-shelf larval distributions, although concentrations of S. leucopsarus larvae consistently increased in the offshore direction, while larval Sebastes spp. were generally found in highest concentrations at intermediate stations along the shelf. Multivariate analyses revealed that latitude, station depth, and sea-surface temperature were the most important factors explaining variability in larval concentrations. The present study shows that the ichthyoplankton community of the central and northern California Current changed dramatically in response to the variable environmental conditions of 2004–06.  相似文献

Abstract  The short-term tolerances of northern pike, Esox lucius L., fry reared in a freshwater hatchery, to salinity were examined in the laboratory. Survival of two size groups of pike fry (mean length 21 ± 2 mm SD and 37 ± 4 mm SD) was examined over 72- to 96-h periods at 9–14 ppt salinity in combination with temperatures of 10, 14 and 18 °C. A parametric survival model found a significant correlation between survival of pike fry and temperature and salinity, respectively. L C50 values after 72 h were between 11.2 and 12.2 ppt, being lowest at 10 °C. Pike fry did not survive more than 13 ppt. Mortality at 12 ppt was significantly faster at 18 °C than 10 or 14 °C. Moreover, mortality was higher and faster for large than for small pike fry at 12 ppt and 14 °C. These results imply that pike raised in fresh water can survive stocking into brackish waters below 11 ppt at least for a short time.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   In order to simultaneously compare vertical distributions of small pelagic fishes and mesopelagic fishes during the night in the upper 100 m, one oblique and 11 horizontal tows of large-sized (opening area 480 m2) trawl operations were conducted at different depths in the Kuroshio–Oyashio Transition Zone during 20–22 May 1995. While Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus and Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus were concentrated in the upper 20 m, mackerels Scomber spp. were collected uniformly in the upper 80 m layer. Myctophid fishes Ceratoscopelus warmingii, Diaphus kuroshio, Diogenichthys atlanticus , Myctophum asperum , Notoscopelus spp. mostly N. resplendens , and Symbolophorus californiensis , a gempylid Nealotus tripes , a microstomatid Lipolagus ochotensis and a phosichthyid Vinciguerria nimbaria were dominant components of mesopelagic fishes that ascended to the upper 100 m layer at night, where these mesopelagic fishes concentrated at depths of 20–80 m. In the upper 20 m layer, Japanese anchovy comprised 60% of the total wet weight of all fishes followed by D. atlanticus (3%), C. warmingii (2%) and S. californiensis (2%). Juvenile myctophids were dominant in the upper 20 m layer compared to deeper layers.  相似文献

Abstract.— The effects of temperature on growth and protein assimilation in leader prawns Penaeus monodon were evaluated. Growth of leader prawns was significantly ( P < 0.05) affected by temperature. The highest growth rate was 0.124 g/d at 32.0 C and optimum growth occurred between 27.5–32.0 C. Growth was described by an equation of the form: W t = Woekt ( R2 = 0.99). The relationship between temperature and growth was described by a curvilinear equation of the form: Y = a + bX + cX2 ( R2 = 0.70). Apparent protein assimilation efficiency was not significantly ( P > 0.05) affected by temperature.  相似文献

Mycobacterium spp. isolated from food and ornamental fish in Thailand (TB1, TB40, TB267 and TB268), and the type strains Mycobacterium marinum (NCIMB 1298), M. fortuitum (NCIMB 1294) and M. chelonae (NCIMB 1474) were cultured in Long's medium, Eagle's minimum essential medium, Sauton's medium and modified Sauton's medium. The latter enabled excellent growth and production of extracellular products (ECP) from TB 40, TB267, TB268 and M. marinum NCIMB 1298 in particular, whereas growth and production of ECP for all strains was limited in Long's medium. SDS-PAGE protein profiles of ECPs from 14-day culture supernatants showed major bands at 65 and <14 kDa. After 2 days culture at the higher temperature of 37°C (heat shock), the production of ECP from all mycobacteria strains except M. marinum averaged approximately four- to 10-fold higher than from strains cultured for 14 days at 28°C. Enzyme testing for the type strains indicated only mucinase activity for M. marinum, while lipase and RNase activities were detected for M. chelonae and M. fortuitum . Protease and DNase activities could not be detected for any of the Mycobacterium spp. tested. The medium lethal dose (LD50) of ECP to rainbow trout and Nile tilapia was greater than 400 μg protein fish–1.  相似文献

The marine diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans f. pumilus has been examined for its potential source as live feed in aquaculture. The present study investigated effects of temperature (20, 25 and 30 °C), salinity (25 and 35) and carbon dioxide addition (air+CO2) on the growth and proximate composition of C. calcitrans under laboratory conditions. The growth and biomass of C. calcitrans were primarily affected by carbon dioxide addition, and to a lesser extent by temperature and salinity. In general, lipid and carbohydrate contents were higher at lower temperatures (20 and 25 °C), while the protein content was unaffected. Carbon dioxide addition increased protein, while lowering carbohydrates, but had no effect on lipid content. Carbohydrates were increased while lipids and protein decreased at the highest salinity (35±0.9). These results should be taken into consideration when evaluating the dietary value of this micro alga for aquaculture.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   To assess the roles of the ark shell Scapharca subcrenata in material cycling in the northern part of Ariake Sound (Mae-no-umi), Japan, filtration of the ark shell fed on small diatoms was examined as a function of environmental and biological variables. The clearance rate ( CR ) specific to the soft-body dry weight ( w ) of the animals (shell length, 8–26 mm) followed a power function of w with an exponent of −0.35. Over the range of 10–20°C, CR increased 2.7 times, and filtration did not occur below a salinity of 14 practical salinity unit. Neither food concentration (10–40 µg/L of chlorophyll- a ) nor weight-specific daily ration (0.5–6%/day in terms of ash-free dry weight) notably affected CR . Using this information on CR as well as data regarding abundance and size distribution, the population filtration rate was calculated to be 1.6 m3/m2 per day in the ark-shell culturing ground of Mae-no-umi (mean water depth, ∼3 m), corresponding to the potential to locally process a volume of water equivalent to the water column within 2 days. Because the culturing ground accounts for 12% of Mae-no-umi (mean water depth, ∼8 m), the ark shell seems to play an important role in its material cycling.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Age and growth of Sebastes vulpes collected from the coastal waters of western Hokkaido were studied. Observation of the otolith margin verified that annuli (outer margins of the opaque zone) were produced chiefly from July to August. This period was associated with parturition and the birth season. The maximum age estimated by the surface method was 12 years but the oldest fish was aged at 35 years by the cross-section method. The surface method was inadequate for aging of S. vulpes older than 6 years because of the underestimation of age. No significant difference was found in the parameters of the growth equations between both sexes. The von Bertalanffy growth curve combined for both sexes was as follows: SL t  = 358.6(1 − exp−0.156( t +0.820)), where SL t is standard length (mm) at age t (after parturition in years). It seems likely that S. vulpes grows slowly and lives longer than previously thought.  相似文献

The influence of dietary cation–anion difference (CAD, Na+ + K+– Cl, mEq kg–1) on energy metabolism and nitrogen losses in juvenile African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) was examined in fish exposed to different dietary CAD levels (–146, 116, 497, 713 and 828 mEq kg–1 diet). The experiment was conducted in open circuit balance respiration chambers over a 3-week period. Five 24-h monitoring periods were carried out at 3-day intervals during the experimental period with O2 consumption, ammonia and nitrate + nitrite (NOx) and CO2 production being measured at 5-min intervals for each chamber. The negative dietary CAD (–146 mEq kg–1) resulted in the highest energy expenditures (83 kJ kg–0.8· d–1). With increasing dietary CAD levels, heat loss gradually decreased to minimum values of 56 kJ kg–0.8 day–1 at a dietary CAD level of 713 mEq kg–1. Consequently, metabolizable energy utilization efficiency (MEU, percentage of retained energy over metabolizable energy) quadratically ( P  < 0.05) increased and reached a maximum at a dietary CAD of 713 mEq kg–1.  相似文献

Anomalies in the regional weather over the south-eastern Bering Sea during spring and summer of 1997 resulted in significant differences in nutrient availability, phytoplankton species composition, and zooplankton abundance over the continental shelf as compared with measurements in the 1980s. Calm winds and the reduction of cloud cover in spring and summer produced a very shallow mixed layer in which nitrate and silicate were depleted after an April diatom bloom. High submarine light levels allowed subsequent phytoplankton growth below the pycnocline and eventual depletion of nitrate from the water column to depths of 70 m or more. Thus, total new production during 1997 may have exceeded that of previous years when nitrate was not depleted below the pycnocline. A bloom of the coccolithophorid, Emiliania huxleyi , was observed in early July in the warm, nutrient-depleted waters over the middle and inner shelf. Emiliania huxleyi concentrations reached 4.5 × 106 cells L–1 by September, and the bloom persisted through the autumn. There was evidence for increased abundance of some species of copepods in 1997 as compared with data from the middle domain in June 1981. The abundance of adult and juvenile euphausiids in 1997 was statistically similar to values measured in 1980 and 1981. However, near-surface swarms were rarely observed on the inner shelf in August–September 1997. Lack of euphausiid availability in the upper water column may partially explain the August–September mass mortality of planktivorous short-tailed shearwaters ( Puffinus tenuirostris ) observed on the inner shelf.  相似文献

A survey of yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares , fishing ground was carried out on board of the Chinese longliners from September 15 to December 12, 2005 in the tropical high seas of the Indian Ocean. The depth at which each yellowfin tuna was hooked was estimated using a stepwise regression analysis of theoretical hook depth and observed average hook depth measured using a temperature depth recorder. Water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll  a , dissolved oxygen and thermocline, which are important variables influencing yellowfin tuna habitats, were measured in the survey. Catch rates of yellowfin tuna were then analyzed with respect to depth, temperature, salinity, chlorophyll  a , dissolved oxygen and thermocline. We suggest that the optimum ranges of swimming depth, water temperature, chlorophyll  a and dissolved oxygen concentration for yellowfin tuna are 100.0–179.9 m, 15.0–17.9°C, 0.090–0.099  μ g L−1, 2.50–2.99 mg L−1, respectively; that salinity has less influence on the vertical distribution of adult yellowfin tuna; and that yellowfin tuna are mainly distributed within the thermocline in the high seas of the Indian Ocean. Our results match the yellowfin tuna's vulnerability to deep longline fishing gear well.  相似文献

Successful recruitment of marine fishes depends on survival during early life-history stages, which is influenced by oceanic advection due to its impact on coastal trophodynamics and transport processes. Here we evaluate the influence of ocean circulation on the dispersal of rockfish ( Sebastes spp.) larvae along the central California coast using an implementation of the Regional Ocean Modeling System, driven at the surface by output from the Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System. Thousands of floats simulating rockfish larval propagules, constrained to follow fixed depths, were released over a broad coastal area at 2-day intervals, and transported by simulated ocean currents at depths of 1, 7, 20, 40, and 70 m. Trajectory statistics are averaged across the 4-yr period from January 2000 through December 2003 to reveal mean trajectory direction, net displacement, fractional cross-shore loss, and duration of retention for different seasons. On average, near-surface propagules originating nearshore are transported offshore during the upwelling season, whereas deeper propagules move alongshore to the north. This vertical shear vanishes during winter, with most floats moving alongshore to the north, regardless of depth. After 35 days in the water column, typical transport distances were ∼50 km for floats remaining nearshore and ∼150 km for floats over the midshelf and slope. Implications for performance of marine reserves for rockfish conservation are discussed. Our results also provide evidence for a strong semiannual pattern of coastal retention rates, with high export of near-surface drifters during the upwelling season. In contrast, high rates of shelf retention occurred for releases at 20 m and deeper during summer, and at all depths during winter.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   A new protein named MSP-SC (matrix shell protein from scallop) with a molecular weight of 14 kDa was isolated from the shell of a scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis , using gel filtration column chromatography, ion exchange column chromatography, and reverse phase C4 column chromatography. A comparison of the known protein sequences with the N-terminal sequence of MSP-SC showed that the protein sequence of MSP-SC was novel. Immunohistochemistry using a polyclonal antibody against MSP-SC showed that MSP-SC is expressed in the mantle pallial cell layer but not in the muscle tissue, and showed a punctate distribution along the horizontal calcified layer in the shell. The isolated MSP-SC inhibited the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals in a dose-dependent manner. The CaCO3 crystals grown in the presence of a lower concentration of MSP-SC were much larger and aggregated when compared with those formed in the absence of MSP-SC. In addition, the crystal had a radial and not cubical morphology. These results suggest that MSP-SC regulates the formation and the morphology of CaCO3 crystals in the shell. Moreover, its ability to aggregate CaCO3 crystals and its localization along the horizontal calcified layer in the shell suggest that MSP-SC may serve to connect the CaCO3 layers in the scallop shell.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The aim of this study was to establish effective procedures for chromosome manipulation in greenling Hexagrammos otakii Jordan et Starks, which has enormous aquacultural potential. To accomplish this, temperature-dependent measurements of the mitotic intervals (τ0) were carried out. The τ0 in this fish was determined by averaging the duration of the first and third embryonic divisions at temperatures ranging 5–25°C. At higher temperatures, eggs developed faster and underwent more identical development. For greenling, τ0 were 341.1 ± 3.60 min at 5°C, 275.5 ± 4.53 min at 10°C, 189.7 ± 6.93 min at 15°C, 99.2 ± 8.27 min at 20°C and 34.2 ± 8.74 min at 25°C. There were strong, negative correlations between the τ0 and water temperatures at all temperatures studied ( Y  = −79.3 X  + 425.3, R 2 = 0.9968, where Y is the mitotic interval and X is the temperature).  相似文献

Pharmacokinetics of oxolinic acid in gilthead sea bream, Sparus aurata L.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This is the first study on the pharmacokinetic parameters of oxolinic acid (OA) in gilthead sea bream, Sparus aurata L. The kinetic profile of OA was studied after a single intravascular injection (20 mg kg−1) in 100 g fish at 20 °C. The distribution half-life ( t 1/2α) and the elimination half-life ( t 1/2β) of the drug were found to be short (0.51 and 12.60 h, respectively). The drug penetration from the plasma to the tissues was adequate as the apparent volume of distribution of the drug at steady-state ( V d(ss)) was found to be 2.11 L kg−1. The mean residence time ( MRT ) of OA was short (14.25 h) and the total clearance rate ( Cl T) of the drug was low (0.15 L kg−1 h−1). The bioavailability ( F %) of OA following oral administration (30 mg kg−1) was also low (14%). Maximum values were observed for muscle at 0.5 h after injection, with levels declining as with subsequent sampling. At the first two time points (0.5 and 1 h) plasma levels of OA were higher than muscle, however, the reverse was evident for subsequent samples. Following oral administration, highest muscle levels were found at 16 h and, with the exception of the 24-h sampling, muscle OA concentrations were higher than plasma at all time points. The fast elimination of OA suggests short withdrawal times with reference to human consumption of treated fish.  相似文献

The potential of waste date meal (WDM; low-quality date palm, Phoenix dactylifera L.) as a carbohydrate source in formulated diets for Nile tilapia was evaluated. Four isocaloric-practical diets (15.7 kJ g−1) were formulated incorporating WDM at 0, 100, 200 and 300 g kg−1 levels as partial substitutes for soybean meal (SBM). These were designated D0 [284 g crude protein (CP) and 383 g carbohydrate (CHO) kg−1 diet], D1 (279 g CP and 446 g CHO kg−1 diet), D2 (207 g CP and 495 g CHO kg−1 diet) and D3 (175 g CP and 578 g CHO kg−1 diet). Each diet was fed to three replicate groups of 30 fish [20.20 ± 0.09 g (±SE)] for 75 days. No feed-related mortality was observed during the entire experimental period. Final body weight (FBW) and specific growth rate (SGR) in the different treatments were statistically not significantly different ( P  > 0.05). Protein efficiency rate (PER) was lowest in diet D0 and increased with decrease of SBM content (D1–D3). A significant increase in whole body lipid content was recorded in fish fed diets D2 and D3. Results showed that WDM could be a substitute for SBM up to 300 g kg−1 in practical Nile tilapia diets without compromising growth.  相似文献

Abstract –  The vertical distribution pattern (VDP) of fish at shallow sites in eutrophic lake – Lake IJssel, the Netherlands – as affected by water transparency, was examined. The pattern was assessed by pair trawling at three depths and by hydroacoustics from June to August. Water transparency was estimated by light intensity and Secchi depth measurements. Hydroacoustics showed that fish were more dispersed at night than during the day. European smelt, ( Osmerus eperlanus ) and young-of-the-year Eurasian perch ( Perca fluviatilis ) comprised 97% of the fish in numbers. European smelt concentrated near the surface, at light intensities of >200 µW · cm−2 when the water was turbid, and near the bottom when the water was clear (Secchi depth > 1.2 m). We concluded that low water transparency over-ruled the light sensitivity of European smelt, and caused European smelt to stay higher in the water column.  相似文献

The relative abundance of adult Argentine anchovies ( Engraulis anchoita ) and the thermal structure of the sea between 41° and 45°30'S during four research surveys were compared. Acoustic data were collected while making parallel transects along which CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) stations were regularly distributed. Anchovy abundance was related to both the sea surface temperature and the stratification of the water column, as classified according to the φ parameter of stability ( Simpson, 1981 ). Regarding the whole water column, the sea temperatures where adult anchovies were recorded ranged from 8.5 to 16.5°C, but anchovy echo traces from waters above 14°C were obtained mainly at night. The sea surface temperature bounds for anchovy distribution were 11 and 17°C, with a preferential range between 12.5 and 16°C, but no absolute value of sea surface temperature was found to be most favourable for the species. The highest fish abundances were related to sharp thermal gradients, either horizontally recorded in frontal zones (≈ 0.02°C or more per km) or vertically associated to the occurrence of a thermocline (stability > 10 J m–3). Sea fronts seemed to be the axes for the distribution of anchovy shoals, and the annual changes in the positions of the fronts seemed to be followed by analogous changes in the locations of the main anchovy concentrations. Within thermally stratified areas and during the daytime, anchovies apparently preferred the thermocline layer or the layer immediately above that, although a few fish shoals were located below the thermocline.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   An apparatus to measure the locomotor activity of aquatic benthic organisms at variable low light levels was developed and the diurnal behavioral pattern of the abalone Haliotis discus discus was measured at various low light intensities. During the experiment, abalone were exposed to 12 h light–dark cycles of complete darkness, 0 µmol/m2/s throughout the 12 h dark cycle and, during periods I (days 1–8) and III (days 19–26), the 12 h light cycles were set at 10 µmol/m2/s. During period II (days 10–17), abalone were exposed to a light level during the 12 h light cycles of 1 × 10−5, 1 × 10−6, 1 × 10−7 or 1 × 10−8 µmol/m2/s and the changes in locomotor activity assessed. At daytime levels of 1 × 10−5 µmol/m2/s, typical behavioral patterns were observed of high locomotory activity during the night-time cycle. However, at lower light intensities, the distinction between day and night activity patterns became less clear and, at intensities lower than 1 × 10−7 µmol/m2/s, the difference between activity during the light and dark cycles became negligible. Based on this, we conclude that the threshold of light level perception in relation to locomotor activity is approximately 1 × 10−7 µmol/m2/s. The significance of these results in relation to the entrainment of behavior in abalone is discussed.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetic properties of flumequine following a single intravascular injection (10 mg kg–1 fish) were studied in sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.), 120 g held at 18 °C. The absorption half life ( t 1/2α) and the elimination half life ( t 1/2β) of the drug were calculated to be 1.05 and 10.71 h, respectively. Tissue penetration of flumequine seemed to be moderate because both the apparent volume of distribution of the drug at steady-state ( V d(ss)) and the extensive apparent volume of the central compartment ( V c) were found to be small (1.51 and 0.626 L kg–1). The mean residence time ( MRT ) was short (09.73 h) and the total clearance (CLT) of the drug was rapid (0.156 L kg–1 h–1).  相似文献
