The two islands in the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward archipelago are only 22 km apart and are similar in age, geology, physiognomy and climate, yet their insect faunas show both qualitative and quantitative differences. During three visits in 1983 and 1984, the insect fauna of Prince Edward Island was sampled to compare with that of a survey carried out over one year on Marion Island. Two species of weevil (Curculionidae), previously known only from Marion, were recorded on Prince Edward for the first time. The biomass of two major groups of invertebrate decomposers (Lepidoptera and Curculionidae larvae) was significantly higher in heavily manured plant communities on Prince Edward than on Marion. Possible reasons for these quantitative differences are discussed. Although differences in species assemblage play a role, it is concluded that the effects of human influence on Marion Island may be paramount.  相似文献

Gough Island is a remote Southern Ocean Island that, despite having no permanent human population, is under substantial conservation threat as a result of human activity. A considerable proportion of the flora and fauna has been accidentally introduced, and new data are presented showing that ca. 70% of the free-living pterygote insect species are introductions. We describe how endangered seabirds that breed on the island may suffer from human fisheries activities and present new evidence showing that local temperatures have risen significantly since 1963, threatening to alter the architecture and composition of species communities. These observations are an indication that the terrestrial ecosystems of other remote islands in the Southern Oceans may be under greater conservation threat than previously thought. In light of the threats described, we discuss conservation management priorities for Gough Island. To facilitate conservation of the indigenous biota, and that of similar islands elsewhere, we suggest that a combination of proactive measures designed to maintain the integrity of island communities, and monitoring programs designed rapidly to identify new conservation threats, should be implemented conscientiously.  相似文献

We ask whether oceanic islands and equivalent-sized continental blocks, which we call here ‘land islands’, are similar or not in their species richness, number of range-restricted species, and in number of threatened species. We used sites in southern Africa and islands in the Western Indian Ocean. We chose dragonflies as they are taxonomically tractable, well surveyed, and provide a range of characteristics from narrow-range endemics to widely-spread and vagile opportunists. We then selected as many oceanic islands as possible where there were sufficient data to make comparisons with land islands of a similar area in African savanna, grassland and mountains rich in endemic species. Generalized Linear Mixed Models were used to analyse the overall, range-restricted and threatened species richness for all islands (both oceanic and land) and then for the two types of island separately. Species richness increased with island size, with oceanic and land island size relationships being similar. Land islands overall had significantly more range-restricted species. Species on land islands were as threatened as those on oceanic islands. However, the land islands of the Western Cape were under a higher level of threat than oceanic islands of comparative size. The large islands of Madagascar and Sri Lanka were outliers with very high levels of threat. Translated into conservation, the results illustrate that over-generalizations about island faunas being more threatened than continental ones are not necessarily valid. While not wishing to draw attention away from the urgent conservation action needed on many tropical islands, we argue that comparisons of oceanic versus land islands detract from the more urgent task of local conservation action based on the special needs of any particular area, whether land or oceanic. It is more meaningful to establish how threats operate and how to mitigate them on small populations rather than focusing purely on any particular island type per se.  相似文献

House mice Mus musculus have successfully colonized many temperate and sub-Antarctic islands that are the location for breeding colonies of millions of seabirds. Unlike other introduced mammals, the impact of house mice on seabirds and endemic birds is believed to have been negligible. The breeding ecology of seabirds breeding on Gough Island, central South Atlantic Ocean, was studied for the first time during September 2000 to September 2001. Breeding success of the endangered Tristan albatross Diomedea (exulans) dabbenena and endangered Atlantic Petrel Pterodroma incerta were 27.3 and 19.9% respectively. Mortality of large Tristan albatross and Atlantic petrel chicks was observed, and the pattern of wounds and observations of feeding indicate that introduced mice were responsible for this predation. Breeding numbers of the endemic Gough bunting Rowettia goughensis are mostly found in upland areas of Gough Island where mice are scarce and are restricted to inaccessible cliffs in the lowlands where mice are abundant. This pattern, together with the high predation rates of artificial-eggs in lowland habitats in comparison to the uplands, strongly suggests that mice constrain the distribution of Gough buntings. The results of this study provide the first evidence for the role of house mice as a significant predator of endangered and endemic birds. Further research is required to determine if the observed levels of mice predation are a regular occurrence.  相似文献

We examined the influence of habitat characteristics at the microhabitat, macrohabitat, and landscape spatial scales on small mammals occurring in 12 forest patches within four agricultural landscapes of Prince Edward Island (Canada). Landscape features were important determinants of small mammal variables at all levels, but especially at the community level, whereas microhabitat characteristics tended to influence small mammals at the population level. Macrohabitat characteristics had only minor effects on small mammals occurring in our study sites. Species richness was most strongly influenced by patch area, reaching a threshold at forest patches of roughly 8-10 ha. The proportions of both forest and hedgerow cover within 400 m from the study site were also significant determinants of small mammals species diversity, possibly reflecting their ability to perceive suitable habitats, forage in areas outside the forest patches, and/or disperse in agricultural landscapes. At least one small mammal species (Napaeozapus insignis) benefitted from the presence of agricultural fields at distances up to 1000 m. Tamias striatus benefitted from the presence of hedgerow cover within 400 m from forest patches, possibly allowing them to move between forest patches. Clearly, the maintenance of forest patches of 8-10 ha and of forest cover within 400 m from them is fundamental for the conservation of small mammals inhabiting agricultural landscapes on the Island. Conservation strategies should also consider the establishment of more effective regulations to prevent and/or reduce hedgerow removal on Prince Edward Island.  相似文献

Tropical oceanic islands contribute disproportionably for their area to global biodiversity and this is especially true for islands with strong altitudinal gradients. On these islands, species richness and composition usually change with altitude, but the way in which they do may vary from one system to the next. Better insights in how species richness and composition are related may have far-reaching conservation implications. At the one extreme, species composition of a species-poor site may be completely different from that of the most species-rich site. In this case, conservation of the species-poor site should be encouraged as it contains species that are not to be found elsewhere. At the other extreme, species composition of the species-poor sites may be a subset of the species-rich sites (i.e. nestedness or nested subsets). Focus on the most species-rich site may be sufficient to effectively conserve a maximum of species. In this study, we determined changes in species richness and composition of orchid species along an altitudinal gradient spanning more than 2500 m on Réunion Island (Mascarenes). A formal nestedness analysis was performed to investigate whether species-poor sites were a subset of species-rich sites and whether this was related to altitude. Differences in species composition along the altitudinal gradient were determined using two different measures of community similarity. The species-by-sites matrix was significantly nested when sorted by species richness, but not when sorted by altitude. Mean similarity indices were low at both low and high altitude sites, indicating significant turnover of orchid species. Our results suggest that reserve selection should be based on two basic principles: (1) maximize the number of vegetation zones in which reserves are to be placed and (2) within each zone, select the sites with the highest species richness. Given that at present only two nature reserves are present on the island, our results further suggest that they are not sufficient to effectively conserve the extremely high orchid diversity on Réunion Island.  相似文献

Aride Island is one of the smaller granitic islands in the Republic of Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. The first permanent inhabitants settled before 1861 and since then man has extensively exploited the large seabird colonies on the island. In order to encourage more terns to lay, most of the trees on the island were coppiced annually. However, commercial exploitation and coppicing ceased in 1967 and in 1975 Aride was declared a Special Reserve by the Government of Seychelles. Two Oxford University Expeditions visited the island in 1975 and 1976 to complete a survey of the flora and fauna. The main objective of the survey was to collect baseline data for a monitoring programme so that the effectiveness of management policies could be ascertained in the future. The survey concluded that the status of most of the island's wildlife was satisfactory, although action needed to be taken to eliminate poaching, control certain introduced plants and to reduce disturbance of nesting seabirds to a minimum. The longer-term problems which may arise as a result of the regrowth of the trees are discussed.  相似文献

A demersal longline fishery for Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) that commenced off the Prince Edward Islands during 1996 has killed significant proportions of locally breeding albatrosses and petrels. As one of a suite of mitigation measures, we tested the efficacy of a Mustad underwater setting funnel to reduce incidental mortality of seabirds. The funnel, which deploys the longline 1-2 m beneath the sea surface, was used on 52% of 1714 sets (total effort 5.12 million hooks) over a 2-year period. Used in conjunction with a bird-scaring line, overall seabird bycatch rate was low (0.022 birds per 1000 hooks), and was dominated by white-chinned petrels (Procellaria aequinoctialis) (88% of the 114 birds killed). Bycatch rate was three times lower when the funnel was used both by day and at night. Daytime catch rates with the funnel were less than those attained during night sets without the funnel. In conjunction with other mitigation measures, underwater setting offers a significant reduction in seabird mortality in this fishery and could increase fishing efficiency by allowing daytime setting. However, small numbers of albatrosses were caught during daytime sets with the funnel, and its use for daytime sets should be closely monitored.  相似文献

Humans and introduced mammalian predators have caused local extinctions and range reductions in the rallid genus Dryolimnas (endemic to western Indian Ocean islands); today two subspecies survive, one on Madagascar and one on three islands (ca. 8000 birds) of Aldabra Atoll. Domestic cats (Felis catus) still occur on Aldabra and their presence poses a significant potential threat to the rails. Reintroduction to cat-free islands would significantly improve their conservation status. In 1999, 20 rails were captured and brought to now cat-free Picard Island (the third largest island of Aldabra Atoll). Two rails died in captivity but all 18 remaining birds were released and survived beyond the first breeding season. Eight pairs had bonded and bred successfully within 2 months of release, producing a minimum of 13 chicks. Eleven monitored pairs produced 20 chicks in 2000/2001, with 1-year-old birds breeding successfully. Average chick production was significantly higher in the reintroduced population than in the source population in both breeding seasons. The reintroduced population at the end of the 2001 breeding season was at least 51, an increase of 283% in 18 months. Around 20 pairs are expected to attempt breeding on Picard in the third season after reintroduction, with excellent prospects for continued, exponential population growth in the medium-term. The soft-release reintroduction protocol allowed monitoring of individual birds' health before release into the wild. This is believed to have played a crucial role in the success of the reintroduction by allowing individuals to acclimatise and providing additional energetic reserves for the period between release and self-sufficiency. A soft-release is recommended as the conservative and precautionary method of choice for avian reintroductions and translocations.  相似文献

Gould’s petrel (Pterodroma leucoptera leucoptera) was restricted, essentially, to a single breeding locality - Cabbage Tree Island, Australia. As a safeguard against extinction, an additional breeding colony was established on nearby Boondelbah Island, where artificial nesting habitat was created by installing 100 plastic nest boxes. Over two years, a total of 200 nestling Gould’s petrels were translocated from Cabbage Tree Island to these boxes. Colonies on both islands were then monitored for a further four years. Selection of nestlings for transfer was based on prior knowledge of growth, plumage development and emergence from the burrow, and aimed to select only birds that were 11-28 days from fledging (DBF) in 1999 and 11-22 DBF in 2000. Of the first 100 nestlings translocated to Boondelbah Island (in March 1999), 95 fledged successfully 8-27 days after transfer (mean = 17.3 days). Of the second 100 nestlings translocated (in March 2000) all successfully fledged 9-22 days after transfer (mean = 15.1 days). The removal of young had no discernible effect on the subsequent breeding productivity of the donor pairs. In all, 41 Gould’s petrels have been recorded at the new colony on Boondelbah Island, where at least 27 nest boxes have been visited. Ten translocated fledglings (nine male, one female) have returned to the translocation site, taking up nest boxes that were, on average, 5.5 m from the box from which they fledged. An additional 27 non-translocated birds, of unknown origin, have also nested in nest boxes on Boondelbah, along with four birds previously known from Cabbage Tree Island. Two nestlings transferred to Boondelbah Island have returned to Cabbage Tree Island. Within five years of the first translocation, the newly established colony on Boondelbah Island has produced a total of 24 eggs and 14 fledglings. The translocation technique developed for Gould’s petrel has broad applicability, being readily adaptable for other burrow-nesting seabirds.  相似文献

Occurrence of rats Rattus norvegicus was recorded in Danish islands during the period 1970–1979. Rats apparently became common during the 1960s and 1970s. Their frequency fluctuated, indicating a possible 4-year cycle. Most rat colonisations lasted a single year. Geographical differences in their frequency may be caused by regional differences in distribution of larid colonies. Rat distribution did not follow the pattern suggested by the theory of island biogeography; presence of larids may be of major importance. When rat populations in hedges, ponds and streams are at maximum population density in autumn, pregnant females emigrate to, and so colonise, islands. Flooding and the severity of the winter may cause extinction. Food supply and predation may be of importance in limiting rat numbers. Breeding birds suffer, especially those placing their nests near rat runs; rat predation on adults may have serious consequences for a long-lived species, whereas that on eggs and young is insignificant. Some larid species renest in the immediate vicinity when predated by rats; others desert their dense colonies. Rat control is successful in small islands, whereas large island populations are only exterminated with difficulty. They should be controlled to prevent predation and to keep breeding grounds usable. This should be done in late winter when population density is low and food-supply insufficient.  相似文献

Island fox (Urocyon littoralis) populations on four California Channel Islands have declined severely since 1994. Canine distemper (CDV) was suspected to be responsible for the decline of the Santa Catalina Island fox, so knowledge of infectious disease exposure in the remaining island fox populations was urgently needed. This study reviewed previous pathogen exposure in island foxes and investigated the current threat by conducting a serologic survey of foxes on all islands and sympatric feral cats on three islands from 2001 to 2003 for antibodies against canid pathogens. Before the decline, foxes had evidence of exposure to CDV, canine adenovirus (CAV), canine parvovirus (CPV), and Toxoplasma, with exposure to these five pathogens differing greatly by island. Exposure to canine coronavirus (CCV), canine herpesvirus (CHV), and Leptospira was rare. In 2001-2003, wild-born foxes had evidence of exposure to CDV (5.2-32.8%) on 5 of 6 islands, CPV (28-100%) and CAV (4.7-100%) on five islands, and Toxoplasma gondii (2.3-15.4%) on four islands. Exposure to CCV, CHV and Leptospira was less common. Sharing of infectious agents between sympatric foxes and feral cats appeared minimal, but CDV exposure was detected in two cats on Santa Catalina Island. Domestic dogs have historically been present on the islands, but it is not known if canine diseases can be maintained in fox populations without the continual presence of dogs. Targeted vaccination programs against the most virulent pathogens and continued intensive disease surveillance may help protect the critically small remaining fox populations from disease outbreaks that could threaten the success of ongoing conservation efforts.  相似文献

The Red List Index (RLI), which uses information from the IUCN Red List to track trends in the projected overall extinction risk of sets of species, is among the indicators adopted by the world’s governments to assess performance under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. For greatest impact, such indicators need to be measured and used at a national scale as well as globally. We present the first application of the RLI based on assessments of extinction risk at the national scale using IUCN’s recommended methods, evaluating trends in the status of Australian birds for 1990–2010. We calculated RLIs based on the number of taxa in each Red List category and the number that changed categories between assessments in 1990, 2000 and 2010 as a result of genuine improvement or deterioration in status. A novel comparison between trends at the species and ultrataxon (subspecies or monotypic species) level showed that these were remarkably similar, suggesting that current global RLI trends at the species level may also be a useful surrogate for tracking losses in genetic diversity at this scale, for which no global measures currently exist. The RLI for Australia is declining faster than global rates when migratory shorebirds and seabirds are included, but not when changes resulting from threats in Australia alone are considered. The RLI of oceanic island taxa has declined faster than those on the continent or on continental islands. There were also differences in the performance of different jurisdictions within Australia.  相似文献

Forest fragmentation by the expansion of human activities is acknowledged as an important factor driving declines of forest species worldwide and quantitatively characterizing this trend is essential to understanding the response of populations of forest-dependent species. To examine the impacts of forest cover loss and changes in composition on forest-dependent bats, we examined the effects of these factors on the distribution of the northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) in a case study. We surveyed forest fragments in the forest-agricultural landscape of Prince Edward Island, Canada, to assess the occupancy of bats in fragments. Logistic regression and multimodel inference using Akaike’s information criteria were used to identify potentially important predictor variables influencing the distribution of the northern long-eared bat at the fragment and landscape level and quantified their effects. A compositional variable, area of deciduous stands, was found to be the best predictor of the presence of M. septentrionalis. We found the effects of fragmentation were greatest at the fragment level for females and at the landscape level for males. This case study emphasizes the importance of examining intra-specific resource selection in how it affects the response of a forest-dependent species to fragmentation.  相似文献

Procellariiform seabirds are amongst the most severely threatened taxa worldwide. Whilst the specific threats vary among species, problems such as introduced predators, loss of suitable nesting habitat and inter- and intra-specific competition for nest sites are common to many situations. This paper reports on an experiment to increase the availability of secure nest sites at a colony of Madeiran storm petrels breeding on an islet (free from introduced predators) in the Azores islands where there is evidence of inter-specific competition. The provision of nest boxes that were designed to exclude larger species led to around a 12% increase in the size of the breeding population in the first year and a 28% increase over the original colony size in the second year. Over three seasons, the breeding success of storm petrels nesting in boxes averaged 2.9 times greater than that of birds at natural sites, despite their likely reproductive inexperience. The techniques presented here should serve as a model for conservation management of other burrowing procellariiform species in situations where colony size or breeding performance is believed to be constrained by nest site quality.  相似文献

The Tristan albatross Diomedea [exulans] dabbenena is the third rarest albatross species, with a breeding population of around 1500 pairs almost totally restricted to Gough Island in the Tristan da Cunha group, central South Atlantic. During January 2000, the entire breeding population of Gough was surveyed for the first time since 1956, and 2400 incubating pairs were counted. An analysis of the areas that are likely to have been surveyed most accurately in the past suggests that the population has decreased by around 28% over 46 years. The number of large chicks counted over three successive seasons (1999-2001) was highly variable (range 318-1129). The average count over this period (705 chicks) is less than counts made in 1979 (792) and 1982 (798). A total of 656 chicks were counted in September 2001, giving an island breeding success of just 27.3%. However, breeding success varied considerably in different areas of the island, ranging from 17.6 to 68.0%. During the 2001 season most breeding failures were of large chicks, and over 4 years where data were available, 75% of breeding failures occurred during the chick period. Predation by introduced house mice Mus musculus is the most likely cause of chick mortality. In a small study population, birds began breeding at an average age of 9.7 years and annual adult survival from 1985 to 2001 was 92.6% (SE=1.6%). Both breeding success and adult survival estimates are low in comparison with other Diomedea species and population modelling predicts a population decreasing at an annual rate of 2.9-5.3%. Further research is needed urgently to assess whether breeding success is typical, and to confirm that mouse predation is the cause of chick mortality. The low productivity of this species will compound the negative impacts of longline fishing mortality, which are likely to be reducing adult and juvenile survival.  相似文献

Based on studies of brown pelicans Pelecanus occidentalis californicus and Heermann's gulls Larus heermanni, disturbances by recreationists, educational groups, local fishermen and scientists alike can be seriously disruptive and damaging to breeding seabirds in the Gulf of California and off the west coast of Baja California. Similar instances have been identified throughout the world—the problem is not difficult to document, but it is difficult to eliminate. The increasing human-seabird contacts on islands in the Gulf of California and along the west coast of Baja California raise serious questions and immediate concern about the continued preservation of nesting colonies of marine birds in those areas. Conservation measures must consider the extreme sensitivity of many seabirds to the inter- and intraspecific behavioural imbalances created by human disturbances. In some cases, total exclusion of humans may be required; in others, limited access might be possible under closely managed conditions at certain times of the year. A symbiotic relationship between seabird conservation, legitimate research and tourism should be the desired goal.  相似文献

The African black oystercatcher Haematopus moquini is endemic to southern Africa and occurs as a breeding species between Seal Island, South West Africa/Namibia and Mazeppa Bay, Transkei. Vagrants outside this area are rare further north than the Hoanib Estuary, South West Africa/Namibia and further east than Transkei. The present adult population is estimated to be 4781 birds of which 53% are found in the southwestern Cape Province, South Africa. Offshore islands support 29% of the world population and are identified as important localities for African black oystercatchers with a high breeding production. These birds face threats from human disturbance, expecially from off-road vehicles on the mainland, from introduced mammalian predators at islands and from competition with man for food and bait organisms. Ten islands and seven mainland sites are isolated as supporting more than 1% of the world population, and, together with their intertidal zones, are recommended for Nature Reserve status.  相似文献

Knowledge about the importance of physical habitat characteristics to the breeding site selection of birds is a prerequisite for understanding their breeding habitat ecology and distribution, as well as managing their habitats. Geographical information systems (GIS) and existing digital data archives provide new possibilities for the quantitative and cost-effective assessment of coastal breeding habitats of birds. We tested the applicability of GIS and digital data archives for the analysis of coastal bird habitats by conducting a multivariate analysis on the relationship between physical island characteristics and the breeding site selection of 15 species of ducks, waders, larids and alcids in 2001-2005 in the fragmented archipelago coast of south-western Finland. We used GIS and environmental databases containing shoreline, bathymetry and elevation data to calculate five physical parameters for 71 small islands and their vicinity. Island area was generally the most important factor determining the presence of the species, but also water depth, shore openness, and island elevation were important for some species. The differences and similarities in habitat preferences within and between species groups seem to reflect the breeding habitat ecology of the species. GIS and spatial data archives are becoming increasingly valuable for research and development, as well as administrative tasks. Our results indicate that physical island characteristics affect the breeding site selection and the distribution of our target species, and that GIS and digital data archives provide applicable information on the breeding habitats of coastal birds and thus function as a tool for conservation and management.  相似文献

The Seychelles giant millipede, Seychelleptus seychellarum, is abundant on Cousine Island, Seychelles (ca. 4.4 ind m−2), where there are no alien invasive mammals as predators. This study of its feeding behaviour and activity pattern showed that its dietary range is wide, feeding mostly on leaf litter and fallen fruit. There were quantitative differences in the feeding behaviour and activity patterns of both sexes and immatures. Its ingestion rate for its size was relatively low, but its role in litter breakdown was substantial. It ingested 4.55% of the litter standing crop, and 17.19% of the daily litter fall every 24 h. Total faecal production was 2.90% of the total litter standing crop and 10.96% of the daily litter fall. This has a highly significant effect on Cousine Island which, being small and granitic, depends on nutrient cycling to maintain its ecological integrity, especially when seabirds are absent and not contributing to soil nutrient input. As this Seychelles endemic millipede has been extirpated from several islands, its continued conservation on the islands where it still occurs is not simply about conserving an endemic species, but also about maintaining intact a tropical ecosystem, with a keystone species.  相似文献
