Erratum

In the article "Space station price climbs higher" by Eliot Marshall (News & Comment, 17 July, p. 242), Herbert Friedman, a member of the National Research Council panel studying the space station, was incorrectly identified as a former presidential economic adviser. He is emeritus scientist, Naval Research Laboratory and Martin Marietta Fellow of the National Air and Space Museum.     

Erratum

In Deborah Barnes' Research News article "Debate over potential AIDS drug" (10 July, p. 128), Douglas Brenneman was incorrectly identified as a scientist at the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke. Brenneman works at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.     

National academy. New report triggers changes in the NRC

A panel of eminent science and engineering administrators has delivered some stern advice to the National Research Council, the operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences, in a report on how the council does its business. The review concludes that the council takes too long to produce many of its reports, is not responsive enough to its sponsors, lacks clear lines of authority, and its staff is too often frustrated and stressed. To fix these problems, the panel urges the academy "to reduce unnecessary layers of approval," delegate more authority, appoint a chief management officer, and create "a service-oriented culture."

Electromagnetic Separation of Isotopes at Oak Ridge: An informal account of history, techniques, and accomplishments

In 1960 I attended a European conference on isotope separation, after which I visited the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. A staff member there ventured the opinion that the separation of isotopes will be first on the list of important contributions to the peaceful uses of the atom when the Atomic Energy Commission's memoirs are written in the year 2000. In 1968 the AEC Division of Research contracted with the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences to conduct a review of the AEC program for the separation of stable isotopes by electromagnetic and thermal diffusion methods. This ad hoc panel comprised seven scientists from the fields of chemistry, classical physics, geochemistry, geophysics, medicine, and physics. In their final report on national uses and needs for separated stable isotopes (9), they referred to the store of separated isotopes as a "real national asset that attains increasing value as science and technology develop" and recommended "continuation of the program as a national resource of great value to the United States." Later, in a discussion of this report with A. M. Weinberg, J. Koch, himself a pioneer in electromagnetic isotope separation and member of the Danish Atomic Energy Program, said he would correct the statement that the Oak Ridge electromagnetic facility is a "national asset" to read "international asset." From my narrow viewpoint after an extended and complete engrossment with this program for so many years, it is gratifying to learn that such men as those mentioned above share my belief that the work has indeed been worthwhile.     

Corrections and clarifications

The ScienceScope item "NIH shakeup continues" (29 Oct., p. 643) incorrectly described the position of Francis Collins, director of the National Center for Human Genome Research, on the National Institutes of Health's (NIH's) decision 2 years ago to file for patents on gene fragments of unknown function. Collins does not believe it was appropriate for NIH to file for the patents in the first place, but since the applications have been filed, he now believes they should be pursued to a conclusion in order to clarify whether such gene fragments are patentable.

Errata

Could it be the thinning of the ozone layer (see p. 645) that has indirectly caused our baffling faux pas in recent issues? In reporting the formation by the National Academy of Sciences of a Committee on Environmental Research to be headed by Cornell President Emeritus Dale Corson (11 October, p. 192), we inexplicably fused the distinguished careers of physicist Corson and former Dartmouth president John Kemeny. It was the latter who headed the President's Commission that investigated the accident at Three Mile Island, whereas Corson's distinctions include heading the NAS's "Corson Panel" on scientific communications and national security and founding the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable. Three weeks earlier (in "Mycomummy," 20 September, p. 1353), we misspelled Coccidioides, a fungus whose petrified spores were found in the ancient skeleton of a Sinaguan indian.     

Corrections and clarifications

In Christopher Anderson's News & Comment article "Rocky road for Federal Research Inc." (22 Oct., p. 496), a comment from National Institutes of Health neuroscientist Michael Rogawski regarding Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) delays did not refer to his own CRADA experiences, which he says were not characterized by inordinate delays. Rogawski was referring to the effect on scientists in general of the delays inherent in what he considers appropriate scientific and administrative review.     

Erratum

In the article "Reexamination of acoustic evidence in the Kennedy assassination" by the Committee on Ballistic Acoustics, National Research Council (8 Oct., p. 127), the probability given on page 130, column 1, line 17, was incorrectly printed. It should have been "P = .044."

In the Research News article "Taking a closer look at AIDS virus relatives" by Jean L. Marx (19 June, p. 1523), Beatrice Hahn was incorrectly identified as a member of the Gallo-Wong-Staal group. Although Hahn collaborates with Gallo and Wong-Staal of the National Cancer Institute, she is in the Department of Medicine of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The article "Exact solution of large asymmetric traveling salesman problems" by Donald L. Miller and Joseph F. Pekny (15 Feb., p. 754) should have included the following note. "Supported by National Science Foundation grant 9058073-DDM and by the Engineering Design Research Center at Carnegie Mellon University."     

Erratum

In the report "Abnormal glutamate metabolism in an adult-onset degenerative neurological disorder" by Andreas Plaitakis et al. (9 Apr., p. 193), the identification number of the grant from the National Institutes of Health Division of Research Resources [(15), p. 196] is misprinted. It should read RR-71.     

Errata

In the issue of 13 April, in the News and Comment article, "Low-level radiation: A high-level concern" (p. 155), Health Physics was incorrectly referred to as the Journal of Health Physics. It was also stated that Oak Ridge Associated Universities runs Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In fact, the laboratory is run by the Union Carbide Corporation. In that same issue, in the Research News article, "Low-level radiation: Just how bad is it?" (p. 160), the name of the American Journal of Public Health was transmogrified to the American Journal of Health Physics the second time the journal was mentioned.     

World Bank, U.S. at odds on population

As the Reagan Administration issued a statement for a U.N. population conference concerning U.S. plans to halt foreign aid to nongovernmental organizations that "perform or actively promote" abortions, several reports appeared about problems which developing nations face in contending with rapid population growth. The World Bank's World Development Report 1984 analyzes population and development trends, argues for providing more aid for population programs, and recounts what has happened in countries where abortion has been outlawed. A National Research Council report documents China's rapid fertility drop since its 1969 antinatalist campaign began. A Population Reports International report advocates housing, education, and incentive-based family planning programs in developing countries.     

Erratum

In the article "Electron microscope center opens at Berkeley" (Research News, 27 Mar., p. 1407), reference is made to the 1.2-MeV (million electron volts) high voltage electron microscope at the State University of New York at Albany. That instrument is owned by the state of New York and operated and supported by the New York State Department of Health, not by the National Institutes of Health.     

Clear air turbulence: detection by infrared observations of water vapor

"Forward-looking" infrared measurements of water vapor from the C-141A Kuiper Airborne Observatory of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Ames Research Center show large, distinctly identifiable, signal anomalies from 4 to 10 minutes in advance of subsequent encounters with clear air turbulence (CAT). These anomalies are characteristically different from the signals not followed by CAT encounters. Results of airborne field trials in which the infrared radiometer was used indicate that, out of 51 situations, 80 percent were CAT alerts followed by CAT encounters, 12 percent were "false alarms" (CAT alerts not followed by CAT encounters), and 8 percent were CAT encounters not preceded by an infrared signal anomaly or CAT alert.

In the Research News article "Extreme ultraviolet satellites open new view of the sky" by Donald Goldsmith (14 Apr., p. 202), astronomer Stuart Bowyer was incorrectly identified as the director of the University of California, Berkeley's Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Astronomy. Bowyer was the founding director of the center and was succeeded by Roger Malina, who became acting director in 1994 and is now director. Malina is, with Bowyer, a principal investigator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's EUVE (Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer) mission.

采用样线法对陕西黄河湿地4种生境的鸟类资源进行了调查,共记录到鸟类61种,隶属于15目33科。其中国家Ⅰ级重点保护鸟类1种,国家Ⅱ级重点保护鸟类2种,陕西省重点保护鸟类4种。＂国家保护的有益的或者有重要经济、科学研究价值的陆生野生动物＂52种。鸟类属于10个分布型,其中东洋型鸟类占22.95%,古北型鸟类占16.39%,反映了该地区的鸟类区系从东洋界向古北界鸟类过渡的特征。
