This study evaluated the effects of rice straw and water regimes on CH4 and N2O emissions from paddy fields for two rice growing seasons (summer 2014 and spring 2015). Water regimes included alternating wet–dry irrigation (AWD) maintained at three levels (–5 cm, – 10 cm and –15 cm) in comparison to continuous flooding irrigation (CF). Rice straw (5 t ha–1) was incorporated into the top soil (0 – 15 cm), distributed and burned in situ. Results showed that using burned in situ rice straw was found to reduce seasonal cumulative CH4 emission (24–34% in summer; 18–28% in spring), N2O emission (21–32% in summer; 22–29% in spring) and lower rice yield (8–9%) than rice straw incorporation into top soil. AWD methods reduced the amount of CH4 production (22.6–41.5%) and increased N2O emission (25–26%) without any decrease in rice yield. Rice straw incorporation into the top soil with AWD had higher water productivity (23–37%) than rice straw when burned in situ with CF. The results conclude that AWD and rice straw management can be employed as mitigation strategy for CH4 and N2O emissions from paddy fields in Central Vietnam.

Rice fields are a major source of greenhouse gases, such as nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4).Organic fertilizers may potentially replace inorganic fertilizers to meet the nitrogen requirement for rice growth;however, the simultaneous effects of organic fertilizers on N2O and CH4emissions and crop yield in paddy fields remain poorly understood and quantified. In this study, experimental plots were established in conventional double-cropping paddy field...

ABSTRACT

The influence of the long-term combination of rice straw removal and rice straw compost application on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and soil carbon accumulation in rice paddy fields was clarified. In each of the initial and continuous application fields (3 and 39?51 years, respectively), three plots with different applications of organic matter were established, namely, rice straw application (RS), rice straw compost application (SC) and no application (NA) plots, and soil carbon storage (0?15 cm), rice grain yield and CH4 and N2O fluxes were measured for three years. The soil carbon sequestration rate by the organic matter application was higher in the SC plot than in the RS plot for both the initial and continuous application fields, and it was lower in the continuous application field than in the initial application field. The rice grain yield in the SC plot was significantly higher than those in the other plots in both the initial and continuous application fields. Cumulative CH4 emissions followed the order of the NA plot < the SC plot < the RS plot for both the initial and continuous application fields. The effect of the organic matter application on the N2O emissions was not clear. In both the initial and continuous application fields, the increase in CH4 emission by the rice straw application exceeded the soil carbon sequestration rate, and the change in the net greenhouse gas (GHG) balance calculated by the difference between them was a positive, indicating a net increase in the GHG emissions. However, the change in the GHG balance by the rice straw compost application showed negative (mitigating GHG emissions) for the initial application field, whereas it showed positive for the continuous application field. Although the mitigation effect on the GHG emissions by the combination of the rice straw removal and rice straw compost application was reduced by 21% after 39 years long-term application, it is suggested that the combination treatment is a sustainable management that can mitigate GHG emissions and improve crop productivity.

Biochar application can reduce global warming via carbon (C) sequestration in soils. However, there are few studies investigating its effects on greenhouse gases in rice (Oryza sativa L.) paddy fields throughout the year. In this study, a year-round field experiment was performed in rice paddy fields to investigate the effects of biochar application on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and C budget. The study was conducted on three rice paddy fields in Ehime prefecture, Japan, for 2 years. Control (Co) and biochar (B) treatments, in which 2-cm size bamboo biochar (2 Mg ha?1) was applied, were set up in the first year. CH4 and N2O emissions and heterotrophic respiration (Rh) were measured using a closed-chamber method. In the fallow season, the mean N2O emission during the experimental period was significantly lower in B (67 g N ha?1) than Co (147 g N ha?1). However, the mean CH4 emission was slightly higher in B (2.3 kg C ha?1) than Co (1.2 kg C ha?1) in fallow season. The water-filled pore space increased more during the fallow season in B than Co. In B, soil was reduced more than in Co due to increasing soil moisture, which decreased N2O and increased CH4 emissions in the fallow season. In the rice-growing season, the mean N2O emission tended to be lower in B (?104 g N ha?1) than Co (?13 g N ha?1), while mean CH4 emission was similar between B (183 kg C ha?1) and Co (173 kg C ha?1). Due to the C release from applied biochar and soil organic C in the first year, Rh in B was higher than that in Co. The net greenhouse gas emission for 2 years considering biochar C, plant residue C, CH4 and N2O emissions, and Rh was lower in B (5.53 Mg CO2eq ha?1) than Co (11.1 Mg CO2eq ha?1). Biochar application worked for C accumulation, increasing plant residue C input, and mitigating N2O emission by improving soil environmental conditions. This suggests that bamboo biochar application in paddy fields could aid in mitigating global warming.

ABSTRACT

The influence of long-term application of different types of compost on rice grain yield, CH4 and N2O emissions, and soil carbon storage (0 ? 30 cm) in rice paddy fields was clarified. Two sets of paddy fields applied with rice straw compost or livestock manure compost mainly derived from cattle were used in this study. Each set comprised long-term application (LT) and corresponding control (CT) plots. The application rates for rice straw compost (42 years) and livestock manure compost (41 years in total with different application rates) were 20 Mg fresh weight ha–1. Soil carbon storage increased by 33% and 37% with long-term application of rice straw compost and livestock manure compost, respectively. The soil carbon sequestration rate by the organic matter application was 23% higher with the livestock manure compost than with the rice straw compost. The rice grain yield in the LT plot was significantly higher than that in the corresponding CT plot with both types of compost. Although the difference was not significant in the rice straw compost, cumulative CH4 emissions increased with long-term application of both composts. Increase rate of CH4 emission with long-term application was higher in the livestock manure compost (99%) than that in the rice straw compost (26%). In both composts, the long-term application did not increase N2O emission significantly. As with the rice straw compost, the increase in CH4 emission with the long-term application of livestock manure compost exceeded the soil carbon sequestration rate, and the change in the net greenhouse gas (GHG) balance calculated by the difference between them was positive, indicating a net increase in the GHG emissions. The increase in CH4 and net GHG emissions owing to the long-term application of the livestock manure compost could be higher than that of the rice straw compost owing to the amount of applied carbon, the quality of compost and the soil carbon accumulation. The possibility that carbon sequestration in the subsoil differs depending on the type of composts suggests the importance of including subsoil in the evaluation of soil carbon sequestration by long-term application of organic matter.

Experiments were conducted in an attempt to study the impact of using different organic residues as fertilizers on grain yield, magnitude of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, and soil characteristics. Five fertilizer treatments including conventional nitrogen (N) fertilizer, cow manure, rice straw, poultry manure, and sugarcane bagasse were applied in the rice field in 2012. The maximum reduction in seasonal N2O emissions (10–27%) was observed under the influence of rice straw application over conventional N fertilizer. The experiment was repeated for a second season in 2013 with the same treatments for further confirmation of the results obtained during the first year of experimentation. The application of rice straw also showed a slight advantage by increasing grain yield (4.38 t ha?1) compared to control. Important soil properties and plant growth parameters were studied and their relationships with N2O emission were worked out. The incorporation of organic residues helped in restoring and improving the soil health and effectively enhancing grain yield with reduced N2O emission from rice fields.

The effect of controlled drainage on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from a paddy field under controlled irrigation (CI) was investigated by controlling the sub-surface drainage percolation rate with a lysimeter. CI technology is one of the major water-saving irrigation methods for rice growing in China. Water percolation rates were adjusted to three values (2, 5, and 8 mm d?1) in the study. On the one hand, the CH4 emission flux and total CH4 emission from paddy fields under CI decreased with the increase of percolation rates. Total CH4 emissions during the growth stage of rice were 1.83, 1.16, and 1.05 g m?2 in the 2, 5, and 8 mm d?1 plots, respectively. On the other hand, the N2O emission flux and total N2O emissions from paddy fields under CI increased with the increase of percolation rates. Total N2O emissions during the growth stage of rice were 0.304, 0.367, and 0.480 g m?2 in the 2, 5, and 8 mm d?1 plots, respectively. The seasonal carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent of CH4 and N2O emissions from paddy fields under CI was lowest in the 2 mm d?1 plot (1364 kg CO2 ha?1). This value was 1.4% and 19.4% lower compared with that in the 5 and 8 mm d?1 plots, respectively. The joint application of CI and controlled drainage may be an effective mitigation strategy for reducing the carbon dioxide equivalents of CH4 and N2O emissions from paddy fields.

A field experiment involving rice–wheat rotation was performed to investigate the effect of mushroom residue (MR) in comparison with chemical fertilizer (CF) and crop straw return on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in 2012–2013. Five treatments in quadruplicate were included in this study: (1) CF only, (2) CFS (straw + CF), (3) MR-1 (50% amount of N in CF was replaced with MR), (4) MR-2 (100% amount of N in CF was replaced with MR) and (5) MR-3 (150% amount of N in CF was replaced with MR). Results showed that the effects of CFS and MR-1 treatments on CH4 and N2O emissions did not significantly differ. By contrast, CH4 emissions decreased as the amount of applied MR increased. Crop straw and MR stimulated CH4 emissions (from 48.8% to 119%) in rice season in 2012. In 2013, the applied crop straw and MR decreased CH4 emissions (from 21.3% to 37.3%). This contrasting effect might be explained by the difference in soil moisture content between the two seasons. N2O emission in wheat season could be efficiently decreased (from 25.2% to 29.7%) by applying MR. Our results suggesting that MR could be used as a soil organic amendment under the premise of proper water management.

Wheat straw management affects CH4 and N2O emissions from rice fields
A 3-year field experiment was conducted in Jiangsu Province, China from 2004 to 2006 to investigate CH4 and N2O emissions from paddy fields as affected by various wheat straw management practices prior to rice cultivation. Five methods of returning wheat straw, no straw, evenly incorporating, burying straw, ditch mulching and strip mulching, were adopted in the experiment. Evenly incorporating is the most common management practice in the region. Results showed that compared with no straw, evenly incorporating increased CH4 emission significantly by a factor of 3.9-10.5, while decreasing N2O emission by 1-78%. Methane emission from burying straw was comparable with that from evenly incorporating, while N2O emission from burying straw was 94-314% of that from evenly incorporating. Compared with evenly incorporating, CH4 emission was decreased by 23-32% in ditch mulching and by 32% in strip mulching, while N2O emission was increased by a factor of 1.4-3.7 in ditch mulching and by a factor of 5.1 in strip mulching. During the rice-growing season, the emitted N2O was negligible compared to that of emitted CH4. No significant difference in grain yield was observed between ditch mulching, burying straw, evenly incorporating and no straw. Compared with no straw, the grain yield was increased by 27% in strip mulching. Based on these results, the best management practice for returning wheat straw to the soil is strip mulching wheat straw partially or completely onto the field surface, as the method reduced CH4 emission from rice fields with no decrease in rice yield.

Abstract

The scenarios for conventional puddling and no-tilling rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation were compared in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from paddy fields, fuel consumption and manufacturing of invested materials using a life cycle inventory (LCI) based analysis. Only the differences between the scenarios were examined. The no-tilling scenario omitted both tilling and puddling, but included spraying of a non-selective herbicide and used a transplanter equipped with a rotor. Fertilization was a basal single application of controlled release fertilizer in nursery boxes for all scenarios. After transplanting, there were no differences in machine work, invested materials or rice yields between the scenarios. The no-tilling scenario saved on fuel consumption, totaling carbon dioxide (CO2) output of 42 kg ha?1, which was equal to the 6% reported GHG emissions from fuel consumption by operating machines during rice production in Japan. Methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from the paddy fields were also monitored and compared for the scenarios. Methane has a major effect on global warming as part of the GHG emitted from paddy fields. The cumulative CH4 emissions from the no-tilling cultivation were 43% lower than those from conventional puddling cultivation because the plow layer was more oxidative in no-tilling cultivation. The N2O emissions were not significantly different between the cultivation scenarios. There were no significant differences in soil respiration, soil carbon contents or straw yields between the cultivation scenarios. The effect of tillage on CO2 flux in the paddy fields did not seem to be significant in this study. Consequently, the GHG emissions from the no-tilling field counted as CO2 using global warming potentials were 1,741 kg CO2 ha?1 lower than those from the conventional puddling field. In conclusion, no-tilling rice cultivation has the potential to save 1,783 kg CO2 ha?1 calculated using the sum of fuel consumption and GHG emissions from paddy fields. No-tilling rice cultivation is considered to be environmentally friendly agriculture with respect to reducing GHG emissions.

Proper rice straw management in paddy fields is necessary in order to sustain soil productivity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A field experiment was carried out from 2008 to 2011 in subtropical China: (1) to monitor rice yield, soil available nutrients, CH4, and N2O emissions and (2) to evaluate the effects of timing of rice straw incorporation and joint N application rate in a double rice cropping system. The total amount of rice straw from one cropping season was incorporated in winter (WS) or in spring (SS) and mineral N was jointly applied with rice straw incorporation at rates of 0, 30, and 60 % of the basal fertilization rate (N0B, N30B, and N60B) for the first rice crop. Soil water was naturally drained during the period of winter fallow (PWF) and controlled under intermittent irrigation during the period of first rice growth (PFR). Compared with SS, WS significantly (P?<?0.05) increased the first rice yield only in the flooding year (2010), and increased the soil available K concentration after PWF and PFR in 2008–2009 and the hydrolysable N concentration after PWF in 2010–2011. Meanwhile, WS significantly decreased the total CH4 emission by about 12 % in 2009–2010 and 2010–2011, but increased the total N2O emission by 15–43 % particularly during PWF in all 3 years, resulting in a lower GWP in WS in the flooding year and no differences in the nonflooding years. Compared with N0B, joint N application (N60B and N30B) increased the soil hydrolysable N after PWF in all 3 years. Meanwhile, it decreased the total CH4 emissions by 21 % and increased the N2O emissions during PWF by 75–150 % in the nonflooding years, but the net GWP was lower in N60B than in N0B. The results suggested that the rice straw incorporation with joint N application in winter is more sustainable compared with the local practices such as rice straw incorporation in spring or open-field burning.

The net effect of no-till techniques on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions is inconsistent and poorly quantified in comparison to conventionally tilled farming. This study assesses N2O emissions and yields from paddy fields during the wheat-growing season under conventional and no-till farming, as well as mitigation of N2O evolution using dicyandiamide and chlorinated pyridine (CP) as nitrification inhibitor (NI). Both tillage practices and NIs significantly (P?<?0.01) affected cumulative N2O emissions and yields. In comparison to conventional tillage, the cumulative N2O emissions under no-till farming were increased by 8.2–19.3 % and the water-filled pore space was higher on most days. Relative to no-tillage, the conventional tillage averagely increased the wheat yield by 6.0 % and reduced yield-scaled N2O–N emission by 44.5 %. The two NIs averagely increased the wheat yield by 9.7 % and reduced yield-scaled N2O–N emission by 67.7 %. The treatment with CP produced the highest yield with the lowest N2O emissions, thus leading to the lowest yield-scaled N2O–N emission (0.15–0.17 kg N2O–N t?1 grain yield) under both tillage practices.

Agricultural soil is a major source of nitrous oxide (N2O), and the application of nitrogen and soil drainage are important factors affecting N2O emissions. This study tested the use of polymer-coated urea (PCU) and polymer-coated urea with the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (PCUD) as potential mitigation options for N2O emissions in an imperfectly drained, upland converted paddy field. Fluxes of N2O and methane (CH4), ammonia oxidation potential, and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) abundances were monitored after the application of PCU, PCUD, and urea to upland soil. The results showed that urea application increased the ammonia oxidation potential and AOB and AOA abundances; however, the increase rate of AOB (4.6 times) was much greater than that of AOA (1.8 times). These results suggested that both AOB and AOA contributed to ammonia oxidation after fertilizer application, but the response of AOB was greater than AOA. Although PCU and PCUD had lower ammonia oxidation potential compared to urea treatment, they were not effective in reducing N2O emissions. Large episodic N2O emissions (up to 1.59 kg N ha?1 day?1) were observed following heavy rainfall 2 months after basal fertilizer application. The episodic N2O emissions accounted for 55–80 % of total N2O emissions over the entire monitoring period. The episodic N2O emissions following heavy rainfall would be a major source of N2O in poorly drained agricultural fields. Cumulative CH4 emissions ranged from ?0.017 to ?0.07 kg CH4 ha?1, and fertilizer and nitrification inhibitor application did not affect CH4 oxidation.

Abstract

Methane emission rates from plots with and without fertilizer and rice straw application, and growth of two rice varieties (an improved variety, IR74 or IR64, and a local variety, Krueng Aceh) in two Indonesian paddy fields (Inceptisol and Alfisol soils of volcanic ash origin) were measured every week throughout the growth period in the first and the second cropping seasons, 1994. The CH4 emission rates from the fields were similar between the two varieties. The effect of chemical fertilizer on the increase of the emissions was observed only in the Tabanan paddy field for the plots treated with rice straw. Application of rice straw increased the CH4 emission rates. The mean rates of CH4 emission were 1.37-2.13 mg CH4?C m?2 h?1 for the plots without rice straw and 2.14–3.62 mg CH4?C m?2 h?1 for the plots with rice straw application in the Alfisol plots, and 2.32–3.32 mg CH4 -C m-2 h-1 for the plots without rice straw and 4.18–6.35 mg CH4?C m?2 h?1 for the plots with rice straw application in the Inceptisol plots, respectively. Total amounts of CH4 emitted during the growth period were 3.9–6.8 and 2.6–3.3 g CH4?C m?2 for the Alfisol plots and 6.9–10.7 and 4.2–5.8 g CH4?C m?2 for the Inceptisol plots with and without rice straw application, respectively. These findings suggested that CH4 emission from tropical paddy fields with soils of volcanic ash origin is low.

Cultivation of rice in unsaturated soils covered with mulch is receiving more attention in China because of increasingly serious water shortage; however, greenhouse gas emission from this cultivation system is still poorly understood. A field experiment was conducted in 2001 to compare nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emission from rice cultivated in unsaturated soil covered with plastic or straw mulch and the traditional waterlogged production system. Trace gas fluxes from the soil were measured weekly throughout the entire growth period using a closed chamber method. Nitrous oxide emissions from unsaturated rice fields were large and varied considerably during the rice season. They were significantly affected by N fertilizer application rate. In contrast, N2O emission from the waterlogged system was very low with a maximum of 0.28 mg N2O m–2 h–1. However, CH4 emission from the waterlogged system was significantly higher than from the unsaturated system, with a maximum emission rate of 5.01 mg CH4 m–2 h–1. Our results suggested that unsaturated rice cultivation with straw mulch reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Field operations of tillage and residue incorporation could have potentially important influences on N-trace gas fluxes, though poorly quantified. Here we studied the effects of straw incorporation in the preceding rice season and no-tillage prior to wheat sowing on nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions during the non-rice period of a typical rice-wheat rotation in the Yangtze River Delta. Compared to conventional management practice (no straw incorporation along with rotary harrowing tillage to 10 cm before wheat sowing), straw incorporation alone decreased cumulative N2O emissions over the entire non-rice period by 32% (1.53 vs. 2.24 kg N ha-1, P < 0.05) but did not affect NO emissions (0.88 vs. 0.87 kg N ha−1). In contrast, no-tillage alone increased N2O emissions by 75% (P < 0.05) while reducing NO emissions by 48% (P < 0.01). Combination of no-tillage and straw incorporation led to no change in N2O emissions but a reduction in NO emissions compared to the conventional management regime. The direct N2O emission factors (EFds) of applied nitrogen fertilizers during the non-rice season ranged from 0.29% to 1.35% with a coefficient of variation (CV) as large as 68% among the investigated management regimes. The EFds for NO ranged from 0.13% to 0.32% with a CV of 50%. Adoption of these new EFds will allow us to account for management effects on N-trace gas emissions when calculating emission inventories. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that the uncertainty remains high, since the effects of soil properties such as texture or pH on management practices are not yet well defined.

Abstract

Microbial nitrification and denitrification are responsible for the majority of soil nitrous (N2O) emissions. In this study, N2O emissions were measured and the abundance of ammonium oxidizers and denitrifiers were quantified in purple soil in a long-term fertilization experiment to explore their relationships. The average N2O fluxes and abundance of the amoAgene in ammonia-oxidizing bacteria during the observed dry season were highest when treated with mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer (NPK) and a single N treatment (N) using NH4HCO3as the sole N source; lower values were obtained using organic manure with pig slurry and added NPK at a ratio of 40%:60% (OMNPK),organic manure with pig slurry (OM) and returning crop straw residue plus synthetic NH4HCO3fertilizer at a ratio of 15%:85% (SRNPK). The lowest N2O fluxes were observed in the treatment that used crop straw residue(SR) and in the control with no fertilizer (CK). Soil NH4+provides the substrate for nitrification generating N2O as a byproduct. The N2O flux was significantly correlated with the abundance of the amoA gene in ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (r = 0.984, p < 0.001), which was the main driver of nitrification. During the wet season, soil nitrate (NO3?) and soil organic matter (SOC) were found positively correlated with N2O emissions (r = 0.774, p = 0.041 and r = 0.827, p = 0.015, respectively). The nirS gene showed a similar trend with N2O fluxes. These results show the relationship between the abundance of soil microbes and N2O emissions and suggest that N2O emissions during the dry season were due to nitrification, whereas in wet season, denitrification might dominate N2O emission.

Biochar produced from plant biomass through pyrolysis has been shown to be much more resistant to biodegradation in the soil as compared with the raw biomass, such as cereal straw that is routinely shredded and discharged on to farm fields in large amounts. Biochar application to soil has also been reported to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, although the mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, the emissions of three main GHGs (CO2, CH4, and N2O) and enzyme activities (urease, β-glycosidase, and dehydrogenase) were measured during a 100-day laboratory incubation of a Chernozemic soil amended with either straw or its biochar at rates of 0.67 and 1.68 % (based on the amount of C added) for the low and high rates, respectively. The biochar application dramatically reduced N2O emissions, but CO2 or CH4 emissions were not different, as compared with the un-amended soil. At the same C equivalent application rate, CO2 and N2O emission rates were greater while CH4 emission rates were lower in straw than in biochar application treatments. The activities of both the dehydrogenase and β-glycosidase significantly declined while that of urease significantly increased with the biochar as compared with the straw treatment. We conclude that pyrolysis of cereal straw prior to land application would significantly reduce CO2 and N2O emissions, in association with changed enzyme activities, while increasing the soil C pool through the addition of stable C in the form of biochar.
