At the beginning of the 20th Century Italy was one of the most important producers of lentil in the Mediterranean basin. Presently, this pulse is mainly cultivated in marginal areas of Central and Southern Italy and in some small islands. As a result of the reduced attention devoted to lentil, several autochthonous populations have disappeared together with the traditions related to their cultivation. Moreover, how long the cultivation of those still grown today will continue is unpredictable. Governmental and local associations have a time window for anticipating a possible epoch when to grow these landraces will be no longer profitable. In the last decades the Germplasm Institute of the National Research Council (Bari, Italy) and the Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung (Gatersleben, Germany) have collected 63 lentil populations in Italy, presently stored ex situ. The evaluation of this collection has shown the existence of an appreciable morphological, agronomic and genetic diversity that could foster future breeding programmes. It is concluded that there is an urgent need to promote the survival of lentil populations in situ, since this will further support the adaptation and evolution of autochthonous genotypes in their original environments.  相似文献

Diversity of boron-toxicity tolerance in lentil growth and yield   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Boron (B) toxicity is increasingly being recognized as a problem in arid areas of West Asia, where lentil is widely grown. This study investigated whether or not: (1) phenotypic variation of B-toxicity tolerance exists at the seedling stage in lentil, (2) such variation persists to affect adult performance, and (3) there is geographical diversity in seedling tolerance. Four experiments were conducted in a greenhouse. Boric acid was added and mixed uniformly into the soil-mix to prepare high-B soil. Experiment I screened 77 lentil lines randomly selected from ICARDA's international nurseries. Visual growth scores and foliar B-toxicity symptom scores were taken 4–5 weeks after sowing, and used as an indicator for B-toxicity tolerance. In Experiments II and III, four selected lines were studied beyond the seedling stage. In Experiment IV, 231 lentil accessions from seven different countries/regions of the world were screened. There were highly significant differences between the 77 lines in B-toxicity tolerance at the seedling stage as indicated by their degree of B-toxicity symptom, and plant growth. The two tolerant and two sensitive selections from Experiment I showed diverse performance up to maturity as reflected by their differences in leaflet loss, dry mass reduction, and seed yield when grown in high-B soil. There were significant differences in B-toxicity tolerance between the 231 accessions. On average, accessions from Afghanistan were the most tolerant, followed by those from India, Iraq, Syria, Europe, Ethiopia, and Nepal.  相似文献

The origin of lentil from the taxon Lens culinaris subsp. orientalis has been proved by morphological evidence and breeding experiments. This wild form exhibits variation in many characters and is distributed over a vast area from the Middle-East to central Asia. Characters that are polymorphic in the wild progenitor but monomorphic in the cultigen can be utilized for better identification of the genetic stock which gave rise to the domesticated lentil. Three characters of that kind have been identified in lentil: chromosomal architecture, crossability potential and restriction pattern of chloroplast DNA. Nearly all accessions of the cultivated lentil tested to these three characters have been found monomorphic, but considerable polymorphism exists in the wild accessions. Three subsp. orientalis accessions have been shown to share the above characters with the cultigen and hence can be regarded as members of the genetic stock from which lentil was domesticated. These three accessions originated from eastern Turkey and northern Syria.  相似文献

Olive (Olea europaea L.) is one of the most important tree crops of the Mediterranean regions. In spite of the increasing appreciation of typical extra virgin olive oils at world level, based on the use of local traditional varieties, very few studies have focused on the genetic characterisation of olive cultivars of regional interest, such as those grown in Veneto, a North-Eastern Italy region. A deep knowledge of the varieties cultivated in this territory is a key step to address the product quality, to increase market demand and to certify the origin of local olive oils. Here we have analyzed olive cultivars and cultivar groups within the olive cultivation area in Veneto, from the Garda Lake to the Euganean and Trevisan hills, by using discriminant SSR markers, in order to obtain a systematic genetic survey of the Veneto regional olive germplasm patrimony. A total of 203 previously uncharacterized olive samples were collected from ancient trees still grown by local farmers. The analyzed samples included also 36 olive reference cultivars from Veneto and neighbour Regions. We found 57 unique molecular profiles out of this set of olive accessions that were split into 15 cultivar groups corresponding to genetically distinct STRUCTURE clusters. Based on a common SSR database, our 239 Venetian accessions were compared with 280 olive reference genotypes representative of the Mediterranean cultivation area. From the genetic structure analysis, it has been observed that 80% of Venetian cultivars clustered in the central Mediterranean group, about 9% and 2% with the eastern and western varieties, respectively, and all the others resulted intermixed among two or three populations. We found that regionally the most common variety was “Casaliva”, corresponding to the widely diffused cultivar “Frantoio”, while others showed identity with known varieties grown in close regions, such as “Leccino”, “Miniol”, “Capolga” and “Bianchera”. Besides these genotypes, others were not matching any known reference and therefore they could be classified as true local varieties of indigenous origin, possibly deriving from the hybridization and selection made by farmers and from their adaptation to the local soil and climate conditions.  相似文献

Summary In high altitude areas (> c. 850 m elevation) in west Asia and north Africa, lentil (Lens culinaris) is grown as a spring crop to avoid severe winter cold. But late fall-sown lentil with winter hardiness has higher yield potential in these areas. In this study a total of 245 accessions of wild lentil, 10 of cultivated lentil and three accessions of Vicia montbretii (syn. L. montbretii) were evaluated for winter hardiness in Syria and Turkey during the 1991/92 season. The absolute minimum temperatures were-16°C in Syria and-18.9°C in Turkey and the susceptible indicators were killed at both locations showing that the cold was sufficient for screening. Although winter hardiness was assessed as percentage of survived plants in Syria and as a visual damage rating on a 1–9 scale in Turkey, there was agreement between the winter hardiness ratings with a correlation of r=–0.56, P<0.001. Accessions of L. culinaris ssp. orientalis exhibited the highest level of winter hardiness, on average; whereas accessions of L. nigricans ssp. ervoides were the most susceptible. Correlations revealed that winter hardiness was concentrated among accessions originating from high elevation areas.  相似文献

Genetic relationships, agronomic, nutritional and technological traits of ten Italian landraces, two improved lines and two cultivars of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) were investigated using a multi-disciplinary approach. Seed storage proteins, used as biochemical markers, were able to detect polymorphisms with variability mainly related to the polypeptide abundance. Microsatellite (SSR) molecular markers provided very useful information on genetic variation and relationships among landraces, with polymorphic fragments able to discriminate all the accessions. Lentil landraces were grouped in different clusters and sub-clusters principally on the basis of their geographical origin. The highest levels of genetic diversity were observed for lentils from ‘Castelluccio di Norcia’, ‘Colliano’ and ‘Villalba’. Field trials, performed in two locations of Southern Italy, revealed a high influence of location on yield. Comparing performances at both tested locations, the best landraces were ‘Linosa’ and ‘Valle di Nevola’ suggesting that these have the highest adaptability. Technological and nutritional data together with the agronomic ones evidenced that ‘Linosa’ lentil is the best landrace, however also ‘San Gerardo’ deserves some attention.  相似文献

488 lentil (Lens culinaris) accessions from 25 different countries were evaluated in glasshouse tests for resistance to three Australian isolates of Ascochyta lentis. Disease symptoms on the different accessions ranged from small flecks (resistant) to extensive lesions on both leaves and stems with death of some plants (highly susceptible). No accession was found with complete resistance to ascochyta blight. The 488 accessions showed differential resistance to all three isolates of A. lentis and could be divided into five resistance groups. 26 accessions originating from Greece (1), Pakistan (23) and Turkey (2) were resistant to all three isolates, while 142 accessions showed variable reactions and 320 accessions were susceptible to all three isolates. These results demonstrate there is considerable variation in lentil germ plasm for resistance to A. lentis.  相似文献

A joint exploring mission has been carried out by staff members of the Institute of Botany of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences, Takent and the Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung, Gatersleben, in July/August 1995 to study plant genetic resources in a remote mountainous area of south-western Hissar, Uzbekistan. Subsistence farmers of the Tupalang basin are still growing a great number of landraces and local varieties, which could be investigated for the first time in that area. In total 238 accessions, mainly of cereals, vegetables, pulses, spices and medicinal plants, were collected. Of special interest has been indigenous material of wheat, barley, turnip, chickpea, pea, lentil, small-seeded linseed as well as some wild spices and medicinal plants.  相似文献

Wild lentils are a potentially important source of genetic variation for the improvement of the cultivated lentil. A lack of evaluation data for characters of economic importance is one constraint to their use in breeding programmes. Here, variation in selected phenological and agro-morphological characters in 310 accessions of wild lentils is reported. This includes 153 accessions of Lens culinaris subsp. orientalis, 33 accessions of L. odemensis, 32 accessions of L. nigricans, 90 accessions of L. ervoides and 2 accessions of L. lamottei. Certain L. culinaris subsp. orientalis accessions had substantially more leaves per plant, peduncles per plant, pods per plant and seeds per plant, and greater leaf area than two cultivated lentil checks. The total biomass obtained from the best L. culinaris subsp. orientalis accessions was comparable with the checks. The harvest index of one check was comparable with that of the two best L. culinaris subsp. orientalis accessions. Of the wild taxa, the L. lamottei had the highest average 100-seed weight. Broad-sense heritabilities were calculated and found to be high for days to average flowering and days to average podding. Significant correlations exist between quantitative characters and latitude of origin. Phenological adaptation, through sensitivity to photoperiod, temperature or both, appear to be a major evolutionary force in wild lentils. Variation is mapped according to geographical origin of accessions in order to identify geographical patterns or clines of variation. Accessions of L. culinaris subsp. orientalis from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan had among the largest biomass, the most peduncles per plant and many pods and seeds per plant. One-hundred seed weight, however, did not decline as expected with increased seed number.  相似文献

More than 100?years ago, before the rediscovery of Mendel’s laws of inheritance, Nazareno Strampelli started a deliberate crossing programme among Italian and foreign bread wheat genotypes that led to the constitution of over 100 varieties and allowed Italy to significantly increase wheat production. Several varieties enjoyed worldwide popularity and were instrumental in the success of many other breeding programmes. To better understand the reasons of these accomplishments, 84 accessions, representing 50 Strampelli varieties, were characterized for glutenin storage proteins and AFLP patterns, in order to confirm their identification and to assess their genetic diversity. The molecular markers analysis confirmed the correct attribution of most accessions and highlighted the broad genetic variation existing among Stampelli’s varieties. Some genotypes, deemed incompatible with the available pedigree data, were removed from the final analysis. A limited within-variety diversity among genotypes was probably due to incomplete homogeneity and stability of Strampelli materials, but also to the use of heterogeneous local populations as parents.  相似文献

Jute mallow rich in proteins, vitamins and essential amino acids is an important leafy vegetable in Africa. Ethno-botanical knowledge on the crop in Ghana has been only incompletely documented and little is known about variation and diversity of local accessions. In order to document available ethnobotanical knowledge and investigate diversity of local accessions, 4000 farmers in twenty districts were surveyed using participatory rapid appraisal tools and techniques. 50 accessions of local germplasm were collected from these districts. Using randomized complete block design with three replications, the 50 accessions collected were characterized based on 12 quantitative and 6 qualitative traits. Results of the survey recorded several vernacular names of the crop and their meaning referring to the slimy nature of the leaves. Some local cultivars which were known in the past are no longer cultivated in farmers’ field suggesting genetic erosion of jute mallow in Ghana. Apart from food, respondents use jute mallow to treat fever, waist pain, stomach problems and loss of appetite indicating nutraceutical potential of the crop. Hierarchical cluster analysis grouped the accessions into four distinct clusters and individuals from the same geographical origin were separately classified. Quantitative traits such as leaf length, number of branches per plant, and number of leaves/plant defined the first principal component. Accessions Cagric 26, Cagric 28, Cagric 41, Cagric 08 and Cagric 01 recorded high yields. These accessions could serve as parents for breeding of improved cultivars.  相似文献

The Abruzzo region (Central Italy) shows peculiar characteristics: the extension of mountain territory is the highest in mainland Italy and the whole region is less developed as compared to other Central Italy areas. Moreover, the farming systems developed with specific peculiarities parallel to shepherdy. Recently, in the area of the Gole di Popoli, ideally constituting the door of the inner and less developed part of the region, four populations of common bean were collected. Seed morphological traits, phaseolin and lectin profiles were analysed. Three populations appeared heterogeneous in phaseolin and lectin fractions. C, T, and S phaseolin types, C type being predominant, and six lectin patterns were observed. A comparison with common bean populations from the Basilicata region (Southern Italy) showed interesting differences between the two regions. The present contribution, besides the limitation due to the small number of samples, suggests that the Abruzzo, and other Italian regions with similar agro-environmental conditions, might retain highly interesting local populations.  相似文献

Thirty-one Phaseolus vulgaris L. and fivePhaseolus coccineus L. landraces reproduced on-farm werefound in central Italy. They were mostly grown by elderly farmers who usuallyselect for a certain type of seed. Different varieties are often grown in eachlocation and on each farm. They are maintained on-farm because of a local marketrequest for high quality products or because of sticking to traditional familyuse in cooking (21.2 and 75.8% of recorded cases, respectively). Three AFLPprimer combinations were used to assess genetic variation among collectedmaterials, a wild accession of P.vulgaris and commercial varieties of both species. Theyrevealed a quite high percentage of polymorphism (90.2% of polymorphic bands asan average). A wide genetic variation was observed among collected materials andeach accession showed a unique pattern of polymorphism. WithinP. vulgaris, landraces werediscriminated in two main subgroups, the former including the accessions fromthe Mediterranean area around the Lake Trasimeno and the latter includingaccessions from the humid Mediterranean area within the Appennine Mountains.These findings demonstrate the peculiar genetic identity of the landracesstudied also in relationship to human and environmental selection pressures.Possible on-farm conservation strategies are briefly discussed in relationshipto the information collected.  相似文献

Exploitation of wild gene pool for breeding is a common practice in an increasing number of cultivated plants. The cultivated lentil could not attain the substantial improvement in the yield potential due to loss of genes for higher productivity and lack of resistance against biotic and abiotic stresses. The absence of evaluation data of wild lentils for characters of economic importance, besides biotic and abiotic stresses, is one of the constraints in their use in lentil breeding programme. In the present study, 70 wild accessions from four wild Lens subsp./sp. (L. culinaris subsp. orientalis, L. odomensis, L. ervoides and L. nigricans) along with 3 checks (Precoz, PL-406 and PL-639) were evaluated for phenological and agro-morphological characters, for their reaction to three fungal diseases (wilt, powdery mildew and rust) and screened for tolerance to moisture stress. The wild accessions showed higher performance for branches/plant as compared to cultivated genotypes. Similarly, a few accessions of L. culinaris subsp. orientalis were earlier to flower and had higher seeds and seed yield/plant as compared to cultivated lentil. However, some were comparable with cultivated genotypes for flowers/peduncle, peduncle length and plant height. The mean performance for flowers per peduncle, leaflets per leaf, plant height, seeds and seed yield per plant increased, while decreased for days to flowering and maturity, and branches per plant during the evolution of cultivated lentil from the wild Lens taxa. Of Lens taxa, L. nigricans had the maximum resistant accessions for biotic and tolerance to abiotic stresses. The valuable variation existing among wild accessions can be exploited following introgression with cultivated lentils. It will help in the flow of useful genes from wild to cultivated lentil for generating wide spectrum of variability and its subsequent use in genetic restructuring of lentil.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Lentil (Lens culinaris L.), a pulse crop, is grown in nutrient-poor soils in many developing countries, often with little or no fertilization. Knowledge on root traits of lentil and the assessment of their role in nutrient capture would help to sustain its production in these nutrient-poor soils. Root traits (root length, root hairs, root-induced acidification, and phosphatase enzymes) of 10 lentil genotypes (Barimasur-3, Barimasur-4, PLX-79542, GP-8407-5, GP-8403, BLX-79542, L-5 × 8704(2), L-107 × 87012, L-5 × 87272 and 8406-122) were investigated and then related to the plant uptake of phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), and cobalt (Co) in laboratory and pot experiments. There were significant (p < 0.05) differences in root length (RL) and root-hair density (number mm?1 root) among the genotypes. The genotypes did not differ to induce rhizosphere acidification and acid phosphatase activity (aptase). Uptake of most nutrients differed significantly (p < 0.05) among the genotypes, but root length (RL) was, in general, weakly correlated to the uptake of the most nutrients in the shoot dry matter (DM). The genotypes with prolific root-hair formation (Barimasur-4 and Barimasur-3) were particularly superior in uptake of those nutrients (K, P, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Mo) whose availability in soils is usually low and whose transport to the roots is diffusion limited. The results of this investigation, though based on a small sample of lentil accessions/cultivars, suggest that genetic variation in lentil root traits and nutrient uptake can be pronounced. Screening of a large number of local and exotic cultivars or lines of lentil should be conducted by including more root traits (N2 fixation, organic acids, mycorrhizae) to find nutrient-efficient germplasm to promote lentil production.  相似文献

Nine genic SSR loci were used to evaluate the genetic diversity and identify accessions in wild Italian Humulus lupulus L., in comparison with widely cultivated European and U.S. commercial cultivars. A collection of 80 wild hop samples from Italy and 43 hop cultivars from Europe and U.S., were characterized. Allelic frequency analysis revealed 65 distinct Italian genotypes and differentiated all the commercial cultivars; moreover, specific alleles were observed for wild and cultivated hops. The number of alleles identified in the wild population were 104 and 123 within all the accessions. The maximum polymorphic information content was evidenced for locus HlGA23 in the Italian wild population and in the whole set of accessions (0.905 and 0.902 respectively). The dendrogram constructed from Euclidean distance with the UPGMA method showed two main clusters, one including commercial American and European accessions and one mostly composed by wild Italian accessions. Model-based clustering (Bayesian method) placed the accessions into five germplasm groups, one of which was characterized by Italian genotypes only. The study showed for the first time the great biodiversity present in Italy, and the remarkable differences with European and American hops. It was also found that within the population of north-central Italy a large genetic variability is present, suited to be studied and exploited; this genetic wealth could be used in future breeding programs in order to develop new hop varieties carrying characteristics useful for brewers.  相似文献

Lentil is one of the important cool-season food legumes grown in many countries in the Mediterranean region. But a substantial yield loss is observed every year due to various biotic stresses. The Sitona weevil (Sitona crinitus Herbst) is a major insect pest limiting lentil productivity mainly in the countries of West Asia and North Africa region. The adult insects feed on the leaflets at seedling stage, and the plant suffers due to reduced photosynthesis. The larvae feed on the root systems and on the nodules, thus decreasing the ability of the plant to fix atmospheric nitrogen. Since sources of resistance to this pest in the cultivated lentil Lens culinaris Medikus subsp. culinaris are lacking, we searched for resistant sources in a collection of wild Lens species available in the ICARDA Gene Bank. We screened 315 accessions of wild lentil covering all known species/sub-species based on nodule damage at ICARDA’s main experimental station (Tel Hadya, Aleppo), a hot-spot for the pest in the region. Large variation was observed in the percent nodule damage among accessions across species. Eight accessions, ILWL 110, ILWL 136, ILWL 166, ILWL 203, ILWL 207, ILWL 245, ILWL 254 and ILWL 258 were identified as resistant, with ≤10% nodule damage, compared to >56% damage recorded on the cultivated lentil. This is the first report of resistance against Sitona weevil in lentil. One resistant accession ILWL 245 belongs to the species L. culinaris Medikus subsp. orientalis (Boiss.) Ponert, progenitor of the cultivated lentil, which is crossable with the cultivated lentil. This line is being used to introgress resistance genes to cultivated lentil and to understand the inheritance of Sitona weevil resistance.  相似文献

Today, emmer wheat, T. turgidum subsp. dicoccon, widely grown in the past is a candidate crop for sustainable agriculture in Italy. As part of a research project aimed at the enhanced use of the hulled wheat germplasm, molecular characterization was carried out to understand the genetic structure of the crop and to identify accessions of interest. A collection of 194 accessions was analyzed with 15 microsatellite loci (SSRs), while only a sample of 38 accessions was tested with 19 RFLP probes. The marker loci were selected on the basis of their independent genomic distribution. Genetic distances and allelic frequencies were calculated for each marker class. The genetic relationships were visualized with dendrograms. RFLP loci were, on average, less polymorphic than SSRs. An average Dice's genetic distance of 0.22 for RFLPs vs 0.38 for SSRs was detected, while an expected average heterozygosity per locus of 0.23 for RFLPs vs 0.26 for SSRs was also estimated. With a least number of 10 loci per marker class it was possible to identify each genotype. The most diverse accessions had different geographic origins. Germplasms from Italy and Ethiopia appear to belong to a more primitive genepool, given that a group of accessions from these countries were genetically differentiated from a Russian-Iranian group.  相似文献
