Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of exogenous gonadotropins on follicular development in gilts actively immunized against gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). Four gilts, which had become acyclic after immunization against GnRH, and four control gilts were given 1,000 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG), while four additional control gilts were given saline. Control animals were prepuberal crossbred gilts averaging 100 kg body weight. Control gilts given saline had ovaries containing antral follicles (4 to 6 mm in diameter). Control gilts given PMSG exhibited estrus and their ovaries contained corpora hemorrhagica and corpora lutea. PMSG failed to stimulate follicular growth in gilts immunized against GnRH, and ovaries contained regressed corpora albicantia and small antral follicles (less than 1 mm in diameter). Concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol-17 beta (E2) were non-detectable in gilts immunized against GnRH and given PMSG. In the second experiment, five gilts actively immunized against GnRH were given increasing doses of PMSG every third day until unilateral ovariectomy on d 50. PMSG failed to stimulate follicular growth, and concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), E2 and LH were not detectable. Six weeks later, gilts were given a booster immunization and then were given 112 micrograms LH and 15 micrograms FSH intravenously every 6 h for 9 d. The remaining ovary was removed on d 10. Although LH and FSH concentrations were elevated, administration of gonadotropins did not stimulate follicular growth or increase E2 concentrations. These results indicate that neither PMSG or exogenous LH and FSH can induce E2 synthesis or sustain follicular development in gilts actively immunized against GnRH.  相似文献

A study was done to test whether ovulatory follicles destined to form subfunctional corpora lutea differed from normal ovulatory follicles in steroidogenic function. Twenty-five ewes were treated with prostaglandin F2 alpha on d 11 of the estrous cycle, then unilaterally ovariectomized before (n = 13) or after (n = 12) the surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) at the induced estrus to collect "control" follicles, which would have produced normal corpora lutea. In 15 ewes, the second ovary was removed 63 to 84 h later to collect "treated" follicles before (n = 7) or after (n = 8) the second expected surge of LH. Five ewes (control) were allowed to ovulate from the remaining ovary at first estrus and another five (treated) at the second estrus (3 to 4 d later). Treated ewes had lower serum progesterone than control ewes during the ensuing cycle (P less than .05). Treated follicles contained less estradiol in the theca (4.4 +/- .6 vs 10.0 +/- 2.5 ng; P less than .05), less androstenedione (.1 +/- .1 vs 1.0 +/- .2 ng) and estradiol (.5 +/- .1 vs 2.9 +/- 2.2 ng) in the granulosa (P less than .05) and less progesterone in the follicular fluid (.8 +/- .4 vs 3.3 +/- .8 ng; P less than .05) than control follicles, when removed before the surge of LH. Follicles removed after the surge of LH did not differ. In conclusion, ovulatory follicles with low steroidogenic function became corpora lutea that secreted lower-than-normal quantities of progesterone.  相似文献

Mature gilts classified by low (12 to 16 corpora lutea [CL], n = 6) or high (17 to 26 CL, n = 5) ovulation rate (OR) were compared for plasma follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone, estradiol-17beta, and inhibin during an estrous cycle. Gilts were checked for estrus at 8-h intervals beginning on d 18. Blood samples were collected at 8-h intervals beginning on d 18 of the third estrous cycle and continued for one complete estrous cycle. Analysis for FSH and LH was performed on samples collected at 8-h intervals and for ovarian hormones on samples collected at 24-h intervals. The data were standardized to the peak of LH at fourth (d 0) and fifth estrus for the follicular phase and analyzed in discrete periods during the periovulatory (-1, 0, +1 d relative to LH peak), early-luteal (d 1 to 5), mid-luteal (d 6 to 10), late-luteal (11 to 15), periluteolytic (-1, 0, +1 d relative to progesterone decline), and follicular (5 d prior to fifth estrus) phases of the estrous cycle. The number of CL during the sampling estrous cycle was greater (P < 0.005) for the high vs low OR gilts (18.8 vs 14.3) and again (P < 0.001) in the cycle subsequent to hormone measurement (20.9 vs 14.7). For high-OR gilts, FSH was greater during the ovulatory period (P = 0.002), the mid- (P < 0.05) and late-luteal phases (P = 0.01), and tended to be elevated during the early-luteal (P = 0.06), but not the luteolytic or follicular periods. LH was greater in high-OR gilts during the ovulatory period (P < 0.005), but not at other periods during the cycle. In high-OR gilts, progesterone was greater in the mid, late, and ovulatory phases (P < 0.005), but not in the follicular, ovulatory, and early-luteal phases. Concentrations of estradiol-17beta were not different between OR groups during the cycle. Inhibin was greater for the high OR group (P < 0.005) during the early, mid, late, luteolytic, and follicular phases (P < 0.001). The duration of the follicular phase (from last baseline estrogen value to the LH peak) was 6.5 +/- 0.5 d and was not affected by OR group. These results indicate that elevated concentrations of both FSH and LH are associated with increased ovulation rate during the ovulatory phase, but that only elevated FSH during much of the luteal phase is associated with increased ovulation rate. Of the ovarian hormones, both inhibin and progesterone are highly related to greater ovulation rates. These findings could aid in understanding how ovulation rate is controlled in pigs.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to characterize and compare ovarian follicular populations in Gene Pool Control (GPC, randomly selected) and Relax Select line (RS, nine generations of selection for high ovulation rate followed by six generations of random selection) gilts during different stages of the estrous cycle. Thirty-five RS and 23 GPC gilts were allotted randomly within litter for ovary recovery on either d 3, 15 or 19 of the estrous cycle. Surface follicles on the ovaries were classified by size (small, less than 3 mm; medium, 3 to 6.9 mm; large, 7 to 12 mm), and counts were recorded for each ovary. Ovarian weight (OW), number of corpora lutea (CL), follicular fluid volume (FFV) from small, medium and large follicles, residual ovarian weight and follicular fluid weight (FFW) also were recorded. Total numbers of small and medium follicles were greatest on d 15, whereas total number of large follicles and FFW were greatest on d 19. The OW, FFW and follicle numbers of all classes were lowest on d 3. The RS gilts expressed longer interestrous intervals (21.9 vs 20.4 d, P less than .05) and higher ovulation rates (18.5 vs 15.3 CL, P less than .01) than GPC gilts. The left ovary of RS gilts was responsible for most of the ovulation rate advantage (10.3 vs 7.4 CL, P less than .01) Overall, GPC gilts had more total small follicles than RS gilts (P less than .01). The advantage was due primarily to higher numbers of small follicles at d 15.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Our objectives were to determine whether or not ovarian follicles contribute to spontaneous luteal regression in heifers and, if so, when during diestrus do follicles exert their effect. Thirty-one Holstein heifers having displayed at least one estrous cycle (19 to 21 d) were assigned, as available, to randomized blocks for a factorial experiment. Reproductive organs were exposed through a midventral incision on d 9, 12 or 15 postestrus (estrus = d 0). Visible follicles were electrocauterized and both ovaries were x-irradiated (1,500 rads) in treated heifers, whereas ovaries of controls were exteriorized but follicles were not destroyed and ovaries were not x-irradiated. In two additional heifers, the ovary containing the corpus luteum was exteriorized and x-irradiated on d 15 postestrus, but follicles were not electrocauterized. Jugular blood was collected before and every 8 h after surgery until d 24 postestrus. All heifers were ovariectomized on d 24 postestrus to inventory follicles and to weigh corpora lutea. No follicles (greater than or equal to 1 mm diameter) were observed in ovaries from treated animals and concentrations of estradiol-17 beta did not change over time, whereas different numbers of follicles were observed in ovaries from controls and concentrations of estradiol-17 beta increased (P less than .05) during proestrus. Hence, treatment destroyed follicles and prevented follicular development. On d 24 postestrus, corpora lutea from treated heifers (5.5 +/- .5 g) were heavier (P less than .001) than corpora lutea from controls (1.1 +/- .1 g), independent of day when follicles were destroyed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effect of daily injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) on luteal maintenance in hysterectomized prepuberal gilts induced to ovulate and in hysterectomized mature gilts was studied. Twenty-four pre-puberal gilts, 120 to 130 d of age, were induced to ovulate with 1,000 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotropin followed 72 h later with 500 IU HCG. Nine of the 24 prepuberal gilts (bred controls) were artificially inseminated on d 0 (d 0 = d after HCG). Mature gilts that had displayed one or more estrous cycles of 17 to 22 d were used (d 0 = onset of estrus). All gilts, except the bred controls, were totally hysterectomized on d 6 to 9 and their corpora lutea (CL) marked with charcoal. From d 10 through 29, eight prepuberal and 10 mature hysterectomized gilts received daily injections of 500 IU HCG in saline while seven prepuberal and eight mature hysterectomized gilts received daily injections of saline vehicle. Jugular blood samples were quantitated by radioimmunoassay for estrogen and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM), a metabolite of prostaglandin F2 alpha. One bred control gilt was pregnant on d 30, indicating that the prepuberal gilts used in the experiment were prepuberal. All mature gilts and six of seven prepuberal gilts that received saline had maintained CL to d 30. Eight of 10 mature gilts that received HCG had maintained CL to d 30, while only two of eight (P less than .05) prepuberal gilts that received HCG maintained CL to d 30. All gilts receiving HCG had numerous follicles and accessory luteal structures.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Selection for increased number of corpora lutea in gilts is associated with increased plasma FSH concentrations during pubertal development. In the current study, 270 gilts from a control (CO) line and a line selected for increased ovulation rate (OR) were unilaterally ovariectomized at 85 d of age, and this ovarian weight was related to FSH concentrations at 65, 75, and 85 d of age. Gilts were produced during two farrowing seasons, spring and fall, and the age at first estrus was monitored from 160 to 250 d. Plasma FSH was greater in OR than in CO gilts at 65 (P < 0.01) and 75 d (difference in spring greater than in fall, P < 0.01), but FSH at these ages was not correlated with ovarian weight at 85 d. At 85 d, FSH did not differ in gilts of these lines; however, FSH was negatively correlated (r = -0.27, P < 0.01) with ovarian weight. The proportion of gilts detected in estrus was less for spring-born CO gilts than for spring-born OR or for fall-born CO and OR gilts (78 vs. 92%, season x line, P < 0.02). The age at first estrus was similar in the two lines but was earlier (P < 0.01) for spring-born than for fall-born gilts (194 vs. 204 d). Concentrations of FSH at each of the ages examined were not correlated with the age at first estrus. These observations support the conclusion that selection for a greater number of corpora lutea produces a correlated increase in plasma FSH during early pubertal development. This increase in FSH most likely reflects differences in FSH synthesis and release and not differences in the stage of pubertal development.  相似文献

Adult Suffolk ewes (n = 14) were treated on d 10 of the estrous cycle with anti-bovine luteinizing hormone (LH) antiserum. Control ewes (n = 10) were treated with normal horse serum. Estrous behavior and the number of corpora lutea and ovarian follicles were examined at the subsequent estrous cycle. Daily plasma concentrations of progesterone (P4), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol were determined before and after treatment. Ewes treated with antiserum had a higher (P less than .05) ovulation rate (2.7 +/- .2) than did controls (2.1 +/- .1). No differences were found in the numbers of large (greater than 5 mm) or small (less than 5 mm) follicles between treatment groups. Estrus was delayed (P less than .025) approximately .6 d/in ewes treated with antisera. Immunoreactive FSH increased (P less than .05) within 1 d after treatment and remained higher than the controls for 5 d. Peak estradiol concentrations occurred on d 17 for treated ewes compared with peak concentrations on d 15 or 16 for control ewes. The P4 concentrations were generally less (P less than .025) in treated ewes throughout the luteal phase of the treatment cycle. These data demonstrate that ovulation rate is increased in ewes treated with LH antiserum. The marked increase in plasma FSH suggests a possible mechanism whereby ovulation rate is enhanced.  相似文献

Pituitary-ovarian function was analyzed in a strain of miniature swine previously shown to produce a low ovulation rate resulting in the formation of only 8.6 corpora lutea (CL)/animal. Five multiparous (M) and four nulliparous (N) miniature pigs with a mean inbreeding coefficient of .39 were monitored for estrous behavior through four consecutive estrous cycles. Daily blood samples were collected from 5 d before to 5 d after the onset of the second, third and fourth estrus and at 48-h intervals during the remainder of the second and third estrous cycle. Laparoscopy was used to examine the ovaries 1 and 5 d after onset of the third estrus and 2 d after the beginning of the fourth estrus. For the entire group, temporal fluctuations among serum estradiol-17 beta, luteinizing hormone (LH) and progesterone concentrations and sexual behavior were similar to previously published data in standard swine breeds. Although the mean lengths of the estrous cycle were not different (P greater than .05) between parity subgroups (M, 23 +/- 1.3 vs N, 22 +/- .7 d), multiparous pigs were in estrus longer (P less than .05) than nulliparous females (M, 3.7 +/- .2 vs N, 2.2 +/- .4 d). Parity subgroups were similar with respect to the mean number of follicles forming CL (M, 8.8 +/- .7 vs N, 9.2 +/- .2). Although an average of 6.2 +/- 2.1 CL had formed by 24-h after onset of estrus in the nulliparous subgroup, no CL were detected in the multiparous subgroup at this time.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study was designed to determine if luteal cell receptors for luteinizing hormone/human chorionic gonadotropin (LH/hCG) contribute to the previously demonstrated abnormal function of induced corpora lutea (CL) in gilts. Twenty-five prepuberal (P) gilts, induced to ovulate with 1,500 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotropin followed 72 h later with 500 IU hCG (d 0 = day of hCG), and 22 mature (M) gilts that had displayed two or more estrous cycles were ovariectomized (OVX) on d 10, 14, 18, 22 or 26 after the onset of estrus. All gilts except those OVX on d 10 were hysterectomized between d 6 and 9 to ensure luteal maintenance. The CL were stored at -196 degrees C until determination of LH/hCG receptor number and dissociation constant (KD) by saturation analysis. Receptor number was greater for M than for P gilts on d 14 (P less than .07) and d 18 (P less than .01). The KD was greater in M than in P gilts on d 14 (P less than .01) and d 18 (P less than .0001). The LH/hCG receptor number and KD of P gilts remained the same throughout the days studied. The LH/hCG receptor number (fmol/mg protein) of M gilts was elevated on d 10, 14, and 18 (50.8, 50.4 and 51.4, respectively) and decreased on d 22 (26.5) and d 26 (25.4) to values similar to those of P gilts. In M gilts, KD increased on d 14, remained high on d 18 and decreased on d 22. We suggest that abnormal function of induced CL in P gilts may be due to an elevated LH receptor number.  相似文献

Effects of an increased level of dietary energy (flushing) on plasma concentrations of FSH, LH, insulin, progesterone and estradiol-17 beta and ovulation rate were studied in 16 gilts. Gilts received 5,400 kcal ME/d for one estrous cycle and the first 7 d of a second. On d 8 of the second estrous cycle, gilts received either 5,400 kcal ME/d (control [C], n = 8) or 11,000 kcal ME/d (flushed [F], n = 8) for the remainder of the estrous cycle. Blood was collected daily at 15-min intervals for 6 h from d 8 through estrus. Gilts were examined by laparotomy 6 d after estrus. Ovulation rate was greater (P less than .05) in F than C gilts (16.0 vs 9.4). Mean daily concentrations of FSH were greater (P less than .05) in F gilts at 5 d, 4 d and 3 d prior to estrus compared with C females. In both C and F gilts, FSH decreased (P less than .05) prior to estrus. Mean daily concentrations of LH and LH pulse amplitude were not different (P greater than .05) between treatments. Mean number of LH pulses/6 h at 4 d, 3 d and 2 d prior to estrus were greater (P less than .05) in F than in C gilts. In both treatments, LH pulse amplitude decreased (P less than .05) and pulse frequency increased (P less than .07) prior to estrus. Mean plasma concentrations of insulin tended to be higher (P less than .07) in F than in C females during the 7-d period before estrus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Seventy-one 10th-generation gilts from White Line-1 (WL-1 = randomly selected control line) and White Line-2 (WL-2 = selected for an index of ovulation rate and prenatal survival rate) were used to compare the pattern of follicular development and atresia during the follicular phase of the estrous cycle. Gilts were treated with PGF(2alpha)on d 13 of the estrous cycle (d 0 of induced follicular development) to induce luteolysis and assigned randomly within line and sire for ovary recovery on d 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, and the day after estrus. Ovaries were evaluated for numbers of corpora albicantia and small (2 to 2.9 mm), medium (M1 = 3 to 4.9 mm; M2 = 5 to 6.9 mm), and large (>or=7 mm) follicles. The concentration of estradiol-17beta in follicular fluid was used to classify individual M2 and large follicles as estrogen-active (>or=100 ng of estradiol-17beta/mL) or inactive (<100 ng of estradiol-17beta/mL). The WL-2 gilts had a greater ovulation rate than WL-1 gilts at their pre-treatment estrus (20.4 vs. 13.8 corpora albicantia; P < 0.001). The small and M1 follicle populations decreased rapidly in both lines over time (P < 0.001). The M2 follicle population increased in both lines between d 0 to 4 and then decreased. Mean estradiol concentration of M2 follicles increased in both genetic lines over time (P < 0.02). All large follicles were estrogen-active in both lines; the number of large follicles increased with day (P < 0.001) and was similar in both lines. The number of estrogen-active M2 follicles was similar in both lines, increasing to d 3 and 4 and then decreasing (P < 0.01) thereafter. However, the total number of estrogen-active follicles (sum of estrogen-active M2 and large follicles) was greater in WL-2 than in WL-1 gilts (P < 0.04), increasing to the ovulatory potential by d 3 in WL-1 gilts, but continuing to increase through d 4 in WL-2 gilts. Selection of an additional six ovulatory follicles from the estrogen-active M2 follicle pool after d 5 was required in both lines to achieve the projected ovulation rate, and after estrus, the number of large follicles remained insufficient to attain the ovulatory potential of each line.  相似文献

Eighty crossbred gilts were assigned randomly to treatments: 1) removal of an ovary and ipsilateral uterine horn (UHO) at 130 d of age and removal of the remaining ovary and uterine horn 12 d post-puberty; 2) UHO at 130 d of age, mated and reproductive tracts recovered when slaughtered at 30 d of gestation; 3) UHO 12 d post-puberty, mated and slaughtered at 30 d of gestation and 4) unoperated controls that were mated and slaughtered at 30 d of gestation. Age of puberty was not affected by treatments. Gilts in treatment 1 had a mean ovulation rate at the pubertal estrus comparable to gilts in treatment 3. But, gilts in treatments 2 and 3 had 16% fewer (P less than .01) corpora lutea at 30 d of gestation than control gilts. Length and weight of the remaining uterine horn at 12 d post-puberty for gilts treated at 130 d of age were similar to the averages of gilts left intact. Gilts with one uterine horn had 2.2 fewer live embryos at 30 d of gestation than control gilts (P less than .01). But, the proportion of corpora lutea represented by live embryos did not differ significantly among treatments. Gilts with one uterine horn had 1.1 fewer live embryos (P less than .15) after adjustment for number of corpora lutea, less uterine space occupied by each embryo (P less than .01) and less total placental membrane per embryo (P less than .05) than control gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effect of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) or estradiol cyclopentylpropionate (EC) on the induction of estrus, duration of estrus, and serum progesterone concentration after estrus was evaluated in 8 gilts with delayed puberty. Four gilts were given 500 IU of PMSG IM and 4 were given 2 mg of EC, IM. The inactive status of the ovaries at the time of treatment was verified by serum progesterone values of less than 0.5 ng/ml in serial samples collected before treatment. The 4 EC-treated gilts came into estrus at a mean of 3.5 days after treatment, but 1 of the gilts did not form corpora lutea. Three PMSG-treated gilts came into estrus at a mean of 4.0 days after treatment. The remaining PMSG-treated gilt remained anestrus and did not form corpora lutea. The mean duration of estrus in EC-treated gilts was 5.25 days compared with 2.0 days for PMSG-treated gilts (P less than 0.05). Serum progesterone concentrations were higher in PMSG-treated gilts than in EC-treated gilts at 8, 11, and 17 days after treatment (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

The cellular localization of nerve growth factor (NGF) and its receptors (TrkA, p75) was investigated during the estrous cycle in gilts. Also, the levels of expression of these factors in walls of tertiary follicles and corpora lutea (CLs) were determined using Western blot. The ovaries from days 3, 7, 16 and 20 of the cycle revealed the presence of NGF and its receptors in oocytes of secondary and tertiary follicles, follicular cells of primary and secondary follicles, thecal and granulosa cells of tertiary follicles and steroidogenic cells of CLs. In wall cells of primary follicles, NGF, TrkA and p75 staining was strongest on day 16, while in secondary follicles, only p75 was more intensely stained on day 16 and 20. In walls of small (to 3 mm in diameter) and medium (4-6 mm in diameter) follicles, NGF staining was lower on day 16, and the p75 reaction was strongest on day 20. On day 20, NGF staining in large follicles (7-10 mm in diameter) was higher than in smaller follicles. The levels of NGF and p75 in small and medium follicles were highest on day 20. The contents of NGF and TrkA in large follicles on day 20 were higher than in smaller follicles. NGF and TrkA contents in CLs were highest on day 7. Our study demonstrates that NGF, TrkA and p75 are expressed in the ovary during the estrous cycle in gilts. These results suggest that NGF and its receptors may be important for ovarian function in cycling gilts.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine whether chronic hCG treatment would cause regression of induced corpora lutea (CL) in mature cyclic gilts. Thirty-two mature gilts that had displayed one or more estrous cycles of 18 to 22 d were used. Sixteen gilts were hysterectomized (HYSTX) on d 6 to 9 (d 0 = onset of estrus) and their CL were marked with charcoal (spontaneous group). Sixteen gilts (induced group) were injected with 1,500 IU of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on d 6 and 500 IU of hCG on d 9 (day of hCG = d 0 of the induced cycle). Ovulation was assumed to occur on d 2 of the induced cycle. Induced gilts were HYSTX on d 8 to 9 (d 17 to 18 of the original spontaneous cycle) and their CL were marked with charcoal. Only gilts (n = 14) in which induced CL were present and in which the original CL had regressed were then subjected to treatment with saline or hCG. From d 10 to 29, gilts with spontaneous CL were injected daily with 500 IU of hCG (n = 8) or saline (n = 8). From d 10 to 29 of the induced cycle, induced gilts were injected daily with 500 IU of hCG (n = 6) or saline (n = 8). Jugular blood samples were collected every other day from all gilts beginning on the 1st d of daily hCG treatment and quantified for estradiol and progesterone by RIA. On the day after the last hCG injection, the number of charcoal-marked CL and charcoal-marked corpora albicantia (CA) were determined.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Antiserum generated in a horse against testosterone conjugated to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was administered to six lighthorse mares (androgen-immunized mares) 1 to 3 d before a prostaglandin-induced estrus and twice again at 2-d intervals. Six control mares were administered antiserum generated against BSA on the same schedule. Relative to testosterone, cross-reactivities of other steroids with the testosterone antiserum were (%): dihydrotestosterone, 52; 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol, 8.6; androst-4-ene-3,17-dione, 1.2; and all others tested less than .1. Tritiated testosterone binding in plasma increased (P less than .01) in androgen-immunized mares within 1 h and remained elevated (P less than .01) relative to controls for greater than 21 d. There was no effect (P greater than .10) of passive immunization against androgen on interval to estrus after prostaglandin injection, duration of estrus, ovarian volume, number of palpable follicles or follicular volume during estrus. In contrast, concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) were higher (P less than .05) in androgen-immunized mares than in control mares during estrus and early diestrus. Concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and progesterone at those times were not affected (P greater than .10). From these data, we conclude that androgens in the mare during estrus may be involved with the regulation of LH secretion. In contrast, no involvement with FSH secretion was apparent under these short-term conditions.  相似文献

Our objective was to determine whether priming with the progestogen norgestomet for 9 d would enhance estrual and ovulatory responses of prepubertal gilts to PG600 (400 IU eCG + 200 IU hCG). Gilts (140 to 190 d old) were assigned by litter, age, and weight to one of three treatments: 1) 9 d of norgestomet implant with an injection of PG600 after implant removal on d 9 (N+PG; n = 43); 2) no implant and an injection of PG600 on d 9 (PG; n = 36); or 3) neither implant nor PG600 (control; n = 29). Beginning on d 0, gilts were exposed once daily to a boar and checked until estrus was observed or until d 45 after the start of the experiment. Ovaries were examined for number of corpora lutea (CL) after estrus or at 45 d. Greater proportions of N+PG (63%, P < .05) and PG (69%, P < .01) gilts expressed estrus than did controls (34%), but proportions did not differ between N+PG and PG (P > .10). Among gilts in estrus following treatment with N+PG or PG, 100% showed estrus within 6 d after PG600 injection. For gilts that expressed estrus within 45 d, the average age at estrus was reduced (P < .05) by PG to 172 +/- 2 d compared with 182 +/- 4 d for controls. Average age at estrus did not differ (P > . 10) between PG and N+PG (177 +/- 2 d). Greater proportions of N+PG (82%; P < .001) and PG (65%; P < .001) gilts ovulated than controls (13%), but proportions did not differ between N+PG and PG (P > .10). The number of CL (20 +/- 2) was not affected by treatment and ranged from 2 to 71. There was no increase in ovarian cysts in response to treatment. Results indicated that norgestomet before PG600 did not enhance estrus expression or ovulation compared with PG600 alone, but use of PG600 increased the proportions of gilts that expressed estrus and ovulated compared with controls.  相似文献

The effects of s.c. and i.m. administration of P.G. 600 on estrual and ovulatory responses of prepubertal gilts were investigated. One hundred eighty-four crossbred gilts between 159 and 174 d of age were assigned to receive P.G. 600 s.c. (s.c. P.G. 600) in the flank, P.G. 600 i.m. in the neck (i.m. P.G. 600), or no treatment (control). At the beginning of the study (d 0), animals were selected from a modified, open-front barn, regrouped, relocated to new pens, and exposed once daily to a mature boar to check for estrus. On d 17, ovaries were collected from all gilts and analyzed for the presence of corpora lutea (CL), cystic follicles, and cystic CL. A higher proportion of gilts expressed estrus with s.c. P.G. 600 (76%) than with i.m. P.G. 600 (52%, P < .01) or controls (15%, P < .01). The interval from initiation of treatment on d 0 to estrus was reduced (P < .01) by P.G. 600 (4.6 d) compared to controls (5.9 d), but there was no significant difference between P.G. 600 treatments. Both s.c. P.G. 600 (86%) and i.m. P.G. 600 (77%) induced more gilts to ovulate (P < .01) than controls (18%), but there was no significant difference between P.G. 600 treatments. No significant effect of treatment was detected on number of CL (17.9), number of cystic follicles (1.5), or number of cystic CL (2.1). Proportions of gilts that developed cystic follicles or cystic CL were not influenced by treatment. Results of this study indicated that s.c. administration of P.G. 600 significantly improved the induction of estrus in prepubertal gilts compared to i.m. administration.  相似文献
