The basis of difference in field growth and yield in Netted Gem potato plants grown from greenhouse transplants, from seed which was greensprouted for two weeks prior to planting and from seed which was retained in storage until planting was studied by measuring changes in plant dry weight and leaf area throughout the season. Cut seed, approximately 70g in size, which were either two or four-cut from 142g or 283g mother tubers respectively, were used in the comparisons. Transplants were started in 7.6 cm peat pots in the greenhouse and were transplanted to the field when 10 cm high. The greensprouted seed was cut from mother tubers which had been sprouted under fluorescent light at 15–18°C for two weeks producing strong sprouts 5 mm long. Transplants, greensprouted seed and seed from mother tubers held in 3°C storage were all planted in the field May 30, 1974, coinciding with commercial plantings of Netted Gem in the province. Backup field experiments, comparing similarly treated greensprouted and storage seed and transplants, were conducted in 1974 and 1975 but were not subjected to growth analysis. All plantings were grown on a Riverbank sandy loam soil. The 1974 growing season in New Brunswick was excellent while that for 1975 was dry and required extensive irrigation. The use of transplants established a substantial advantage in terms of early emergence and yields were consistently and significantly greater than those of greensprouted-seed and unsprouted-seed plants. The transplant yield advantage was attributed to the fact that tuberization was advanced substantially compared with the latter two types. Higher relative growth rates were associated with later emergence so that the rate for plants growing from unsprouted seed was greater than that for plants growing from greensprouted plants which, in turn, was superior to that of transplants. This pattern was maintained through the season. Consequently, small advantages in time of emergence, such as that obtained with greensprouted-seed plants, were not accompanied by significant yield differences. Canopy size decreased as emergence was delayed and canopy size differences were determined largely by the amount of branching. As canopy size decreased and emergence was delayed, the net assimilation rate was found to increase.  相似文献

Crop losses in peppers artificially infected with Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (XCV) were determined during 3 years of field experiments in three areas of Israel. Direct losses of 23–44% in fruit yield were recorded when severe leaf infection occurred or was induced at an early stage of plant growth. Yield losses and disease index were markedly lower in plants inoculated at later stages and near maturation. Indirect losses in severely infected fields were mainly due to shedding of leaves and exposure of fruits to sun. In this case, up to 95% of the fruits lost their commercial value. In artificially infected symptomless plants with massive endogenous populations of XCV in the leaves, a loss of 24% in yield was measured, compared with plants free from an endogenous pathogen population.  相似文献

The yield and quality response of Russet Burbank potatoes to simulated hail damage was dependent upon the amount of damage and on the growth stage at which the damage occurred. Plots of Russet Burbank potato plants were subjected to 0%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% defoliation at 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, or 14 weeks after emergence. A motorized flail was used to simulate the complex damage that occurs during a natural hail storm. Early season simulated hail damage, when the plants were mainly vegetative, caused yield losses proportional to the degree of damage. Simulated hail damage during the early phases of tuber growth caused minor yield losses (< 5%) at low defoliation levels but severe losses at the higher levels with proportional loss of tuber quality. Defoliation later in the season resulted in progressively less reduction of both yield and quality. At or near maturity, late season simulated hail damage caused insignificant losses unless the stems were damaged enough to prevent nutrition and carbohydrate translocation into the tubers.  相似文献

Seed potatoes from Maine, New Brunswick (Canada), Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota were examined during 4 years for contaminating fusarial propagules on tuber surfaces. The degree of contamination was estimated by counting the number of infections that developed on cut surfaces of 100 pieces cut from 50 tubers removed from the tops of 6 cwt bags. Lesion counts were made after 2-weeks incubation at 13 to 16 C. Of seventy-seven seed stocks examined, 29 developed lesions on 91–100% of the seed pieces. Twenty-four of these heavily contaminated stocks came from Maine and New Brunswick. For the different years,Fusarium solani was obtained from 70 to 90%, andF. roseum from 5 to 28% of the lesions cultured each year. BothFusaria were on potatoes from the different production areas. The infectious propagules were in soil washed or brushed from tuber surfaces, and surface-borne inoculum from the tubers. A preliminary report on identifying contamibefore cutting. Plant emergence and productivity were correlated with tuber contamination.  相似文献

The response of vegetative soybean (Glycine max) to Helicoverpa armigera feeding was studied in irrigated field cages over three years in eastern Australia to determine the relationship between larval density and yield loss, and to develop economic injury levels. Rather than using artificial defoliation techniques, plants were infested with either eggs or larvae of H. armigera, and larvae allowed to feed until death or pupation. Larvae were counted and sized regularly and infestation intensity was calculated in Helicoverpa injury equivalent (HIE) units, where 1 HIE was the consumption of one larva from the start of the infestation period to pupation. In the two experiments where yield loss occurred, the upper threshold for zero yield loss was 7.51 ± 0.21 HIEs and 6.43 ± 1.08 HIEs respectively. In the third experiment, infestation intensity was lower and no loss of seed yield was detected up to 7.0 HIEs. The rate of yield loss/HIE beyond the zero yield loss threshold varied between Experiments 1 and 2 (−9.44 ± 0.80 g and −23.17 ± 3.18 g, respectively). H. armigera infestation also affected plant height and various yield components (including pod and seed numbers and seeds/pod) but did not affect seed size in any experiment. Leaf area loss of plants averaged 841 and 1025 cm2/larva in the two experiments compared to 214 and 302 cm2/larva for cohort larvae feeding on detached leaves at the same time, making clear that artificial defoliation techniques are unsuitable for determining H. armigera economic injury levels on vegetative soybean. Analysis of canopy leaf area and pod profiles indicated that leaf and pod loss occurred from the top of the plant downwards. However, there was an increase in pod numbers closer to the ground at higher pest densities as the plant attempted to compensate for damage. Defoliation at the damage threshold was 18.6 and 28.0% in Experiments 1 and 2, indicating that yield loss from H. armigera feeding occurred at much lower levels of defoliation than previously indicated by artificial defoliation studies. Based on these results, the economic injury level for H. armigera on vegetative soybean is approximately 7.3 HIEs/row-metre in 91 cm rows or 8.0 HIEs/m2.  相似文献

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivars planted too late or too early may be subjected to short photoperiods that can cause plants to flower prematurely and produce many pods at lower nodes near the soil surface. This can result in considerable mechanical harvest loss even if yield potential is good. The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect of gibberellic acid (GA), applied on four soybean cultivars at different times relative to emergence, on internode length, yield, and agronomic characteristics. Seven timings (−1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days after emergence (dae)) of GA application at 25 g ha−1 were tested. Field experiments were conducted for 2 years at Ona (27° 25′N), and 1 year at Gainesville (29° 40′N), Florida. Cultivars were main-plot treatments, and time of GA application plus a replicated control were subplots. At Ona, ‘Amsoy 71’ (Maturity Group (MG) II), ‘Williams’ (MG III), ‘Cutler 71’ (MG IV), and ‘Essex’ (MGV), were seeded in early March in 250-mm row spacings to a final population of 8 plants m−1 of row. At Gainesville, the Williams cultivar was seeded on March 15 in 350-mm rows at 20 plants m−1.Applied GA at +4 or +5 dae resulted in a 40–50-mm increase in length of the hypocotyl, plus internodes 1 and 2 were increased 49–67% compared to the control, but did not affect total plant height. Length of upper internodes was slightly reduced by the GA treatments. The timing of GA application had no effect on seed quality, seed weight, or total seed yield. Approximately 10% of the total seed yield came from the lower three nodes (cotyledonary, unifoliate, and first trifoliate). These results indicate that GA can increase the basal stem elongation of soybean by an average of 50 mm, which could aid commercial harvesting.  相似文献

Ten ‘Russet Burbank’ potato clones collected from various geographical regions of the United States and Canada were evaluated for plant and agronomic characteristics for two years at Aberdeen, Idaho. Clonal differences were detected for emergence time, stem number per hill, expression of Verticillium symptoms, some measures of yield, and percentage of tubers with hollow heart. Eight of the ten clones were quite similar. Differences were slight or found only in a few characteristics. One clone, collected from northern Idaho, was similar to the homogenous eight clones in all respects except yield, which was probably due to chronic PVX infection throughout the trial period. Another clone, collected from New Brunswick, was distinct from all other clones and was markedly inferior with respect to many of the characteristics measured when grown in Idaho.  相似文献

Harvester ants from the species Messor barbarus (L.) are important seed predators in semi-arid cereal fields of NE Spain, and can contribute substantially to weed control. However, occasionally they harvest newly sown crop seeds at sowing in autumn, or ripe cereal grains close to harvest in summer, causing yield losses.A preliminary study was conducted in 34 commercial winter cereal fields to measure yield loss, and to identify factors that influence it. The area affected by ants was measured ten days prior to the anticipated harvest date. Ant colony size, nest density, crop height, weed densities and temperatures at sowing were assessed. At sowing, harvester ants did not cause yield losses (0.2% of potential yield on average). At harvest, yield losses were generally low as well (0.6%) although occasionally higher losses were recorded (max. 9.2%). Yield losses significantly increased with increasing nest density, nest size and with number of years of no-till. The results of this study show that in 2009 yield losses caused by M. barbarus were insignificant and more than offset by the benefits provided by the destruction of weed seeds.  相似文献

Applying less N on Russet Burbank potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) at planting time may reduce the potential loss of N from sandy soil by wind erosion and leaching early in the season. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of rate and time of N fertilization on potato production. Potatoes were grown in outdoor pot cultures with N rates of 75,150 and 300 ppm and in field plots with N rates from 112 to 448 kg N/ha applied in single and split applications. The results from pot cultures harvested after one month’s growth showed that yield of tops increased and tuber yield decreased as applied N at planting increased from 75 ppm to 150 or 300 ppm. Field results showed that the yield of potatoes was as high or higher when N applications were split between planting and when plants were 15 to 20 cm tall (early tuberization) as with the same amount of N applied at planting. Generally 112 kg N/ha at planting time was sufficient when additional N was applied after emergence. Split application of N resulted in more second growth on tubers than when all of the N was applied at planting.  相似文献

Missing and irregularly spaced potato plants compromise grower revenue. A recent survey of 70 commercial fields in Washington State, USA, indicated that in-row seedpiece and plant spacing was irregular due to multiple planter skips and clumped seedpieces. Seven percent (2950 missing plants ha?1) of the intended stand was missing: 6% from planter skips and 1% from nonviable seedpieces. To estimate economic loss to Washington potato growers, two potato (Solanum tuberosum) cultivars, Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah, were grown in small-plot experiments designed to mimic spacing errors commonly found in Washington fields. Yield and economic values of uniform (optimum) spacing were compared to values coming from treatments that simulated planter skips/missing plants and seed clumps (doubles) in 2001 and 2002. The planter-skip treatments produced the lowest total, market, and U.S. No. 1 yields for both cultivars. In-row plants on both sides of a skip collectively compensated for 56% to 67% of the missing plant’s economic value. Plants in adjacent rows failed to compensate for their missing neighbor. Doubles reduced average tuber size for both cultivars compared with optimum spacing. Using processing market values, 2950 missing Russet Burbank plants ha?1 reduced seed-cost-adjusted gross income 2.9% or $205 ha?1. Doubles did not affect Russet Burbank processing value. Using fresh market values, 2950 missing and 1980 doubles ha?1 reduced Russet Norkotah adjusted gross income 4.4% or $250 ha?1. Improved planter technology and management efforts would likely improve plant spacing in commercial fields and in turn, grower revenue. Planter manufacturers and growers should consider this information when making management decisions.

Lolium multiflorum Lam. (annual ryegrass) is used extensively as a forage crop and seed is produced in several areas worldwide. Seed production has been shown to be commercially possible in Atlantic Canada but improved weed control is needed. Studies were conducted in two provinces (Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick) to determine the effects of the herbicides bentazon, bromoxynil/MCPA, dicamba/MCPA, thifensulfuron/tribenuron, 2,4-D and MCPA on weed control, L. multiflorum growth, seed yields and seed germination in 1998 and 1999. The herbicides MCPA, dicamba/MCPA and bromoxynil/MCPA as evaluated in these experiments provided acceptable control of the broad-leaved weeds present and had no effect on seed yield or seed germination. Although the thifensulfuron/tribenuron caused early foliar injury, the plants recovered and it provided excellent weed control. None of the herbicides affected seed germination. MCPA, dicamba/MCPA and bromoxynil/MCPA could be used to provide control of broad-leaved weeds and thifensulfuron/tribenuron could be used if growers were willing to accept some early injury and possible yield loss to obtain the improved weed control.  相似文献

Potato virus Y (PVY) transmission was studied in six commercial potato fields in 2015 and 2016 in New Brunswick, Canada. Plants emerged from PVY-positive tubers, or PVY-free plants that were artificially inoculated with PVY shortly after emergence, were used as PVY inoculum plants in the study. In all trials, equal numbers of PVY inoculum plants from each of three strains common in the region, PVYO, PVYN:O and PVYNTN, were used. PVY inoculated into tractor-traffic rows showed 2 to 7 times as much PVY spread to previously virus-free plants by the end of the season (up to 48.5% in one tractor row, compared to a maximum of 16.3% in a distant control row unaffected by tractor traffic). Evidence supporting a hypothesis that tractor traffic enhances PVY transmission through aphid disturbance was observed by PVY spread in both directions along the rows, not biased in the direction of tractor travel, and that the ratio of spread of the three strains was nearly indentical in control and tractor rows. However, the lack of spread to immediately adjacent rows, and statistically significant spatial pattern matching the circumference of tractor wheels specific to each field support the hypothesis that direct mechanical transmission of wounded plant sap could also be a factor in the enhanced PVY transmission.  相似文献

Canola seedling blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium spp., can result in large yield losses to canola (Brassica napus) at high inoculum pressure. The effect of inoculum density was studied by mixing different amounts of R. solani AG-2-1 and Fusarium avenaceum into a sterilized natural soil and soil-less mix (2:1, v:v) separately, and recording seedling emergence, damping-off and seedling height within ten days after seeding; root rot severity at 12 days after seeding and seed yield at harvest on canola cultivars ‘45H29’ and ‘73-77RR’. Root rot severity increased and emergence, plant height and seed yield decreased with increased inoculum density of both R. solani and F. avenaceum. For quantification of R. solani AG-2-1, a primer and TaqMan probe set (Rs21F/Rs21R/Rs21P) was designed based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of R. solani AG-2-1. From a conventional PCR amplification, an 88-bp product was amplified from all isolates classified as AG-2-1 with the primers Rs21F and Rs21R. No product was amplified with DNA from isolates belonging to other anastomosis groups of R. solani, other pathogens or the host plant. By using quantitative PCR, DNA amounts as low as 100 fg of R. solani AG-2-1 were detected. The quantity of DNA from soil samples with different inoculum densities estimated using qPCR was highly correlated to the number of colony-forming units (cfu) obtained from the same soil samples for both R. solani AG-2-1 and F. avenaceum.  相似文献

Tobique is a chipping variety with good yield and table quality. It is resistant to Verticillium wilt,Fusarium sambucinum, Fusarium coeruleum, and virus Y. Tobique was originated at Fredericton, New Brunswick and is a product of the potato breeding program of Agriculture Canada. This variety has been under test in New Brunswick for fifteen years as seedling F61025. It has also been tested extensively in the Maritime Provinces and throughout Canada through the facilities of regional and national evaluation trials. Tobique was selected from a cross between the variety Cariboo and Fredericton seedling F45019. Cariboo was introduced in British Columbia as a maincrop variety of distinctive appearance and bruise resistance; also with resistance toVerticillium alboatrum andPhoma rot. F45019 is a late blight resistant seedling with high dry matter. Pedigree: {ie419-01}  相似文献

The nitroguanidines are a new family of plant growth regulators with cytokinin-like activity. AC 243,654, l-(m)-methoxybenzyl)-3-nitroguanidine, is a member of this family, and has caused morphological and yield changes on several crops. Greenhouse-grown potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.), cultivar Russet Burbank were exposed at 15 days after emergence (DAE) to AC 243,654 at 0.5 and 1 kg/ha. The effects of AC 243,654 on plant growth and tuber yields were determined at 7, 14, 28, 42, 56, and 70 days after treatment (DAT). At 14 to 42 DAT, AC 243,654 increased the number of branches. Stolon length was increased at 7 and 14 DAT, and root length was decreased at 7 DAT. Stem length was not affected. Plant weight was higher in treated plants than in checks at 14 DAT but not at 28 DAT. At 42 DAT, the check weight was decreasing while the weight of the treated plants was maintained. The slower weight loss in treated plants is attributed to the anti-senescence effect of AC 243,654. Treated plants had greater tuber yield and number than the checks at tuber initiation, 7 DAT. From 14 DAT to the final harvest at 70 DAT, the treated plants produced higher yields than the checks of tubers over 25.4 mm. This resulted in higher total yields at 42, 56 and 70 DAT, but not at 14 and 28 DAT due to the proportionately lower yield of tubers less than 25.4 mm  相似文献

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is a nonwoody fiber source with many uses. To evaluate the dry matter yield potential of kenaf at two locations in the southern High Plains of the USA and the effects of late planting/late emergence as a possible replacement for hail damaged cotton, four varieties were grown in 2004 and 2005 at New Mexico State University's Agricultural Science Centers at Clovis, under limited irrigation, and Tucumcari, under rainfed conditions. Each study was a randomized complete block design having four replicates. A year × location interaction existed (P < 0.0469) for kenaf yield largely due to precipitation amount and distribution. Either late planting or late emergence due to low soil moisture at planting significantly reduced yields (3.62 vs. 0.63 Mg ha?1 for mid-May planting and emergence and early July emergence or planting, respectively, P < 0.0001). Consequently, kenaf would not be suitable for recovering input costs when planted after failure of cotton. The very late maturing variety Gregg had consistently lower numeric yields than Dowling, Everglades 41, and Tainung 2 in all comparisons, with the strongest trend within the emergence date comparison (P < 0.0912). Kenaf varieties should be selected for any location that finish blooming approximately three to four weeks prior to the average first autumn freeze to allow for maximum growth.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to assess the importance and interrelationships of emergence date and equidistant spacing to rice (Oryza sativa L.) plant and crop yields and yield variation. Field experiments were conducted in microplots at Keiser, Arkansas, in 1988 and 1989. The treatments were equidistant spacings of 40, 50, 60, and 80 mm. Emergence dates were recorded for plants in the center of each plot. Individual plant grain yields (YG) were recorded at maturity. Relative emergence times (tR, differences in days) were computed between neighboring plants (tRN and between each plant and the first-emerging plant in the plot (tRC). Both expressions of tR revealed that later-emerging plants yielded less than earlier-emerging plants. The negative effect of later emergence was more pronounced at the closer spacings and for tRC than tRN. Thus, tRC was more meaningful than tRN as expression of emergence time. At close spacings, increased tRC decreased to a few days the length of time over which plants could emerge and still produce grain i.e., only the earlier emerging plants were productive. The results also indicated that more uniform crop maturity might result from increasing plant density.  相似文献

Net blotch incited by Pyrenophora teres f. teres is an important constraint for barley production in the semi-arid regions of Morocco, reaching epidemic proportions under favorable weather conditions. In this study, we generated 480 epidemics. These epidemics were characterized at five sites and for six different varieties with plants either inoculated by the pathogen or treated with fungicide tilt (propiconazle) 250 a.i. ha−1. The study was conducted in two growing seasons (1995–1996 and 1996–1997). Disease severity and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) were related to grain yield. Critical-point model (CPM) and multiple-point model (MPM) did not explain the yield variability encountered and were not investigated further. For the same reason, the relationship between the AUDPC and yield was discarded. Disease effect on yield loss was closely related to yield potential in each growing season, and could not be used to predict yield or yield losses. Estimated yield losses due to net blotch varied between 14 and 29% with resistant varieties out yielding susceptible varieties by 39% when there was no disease control and by 56% under fungicide treatment. Varietal resistance is essential to the control of barley net blotch. A response surface model based on grain yield, AUDPC and growth stage explained most of the yield variability (R2=0.94). This model was validated with 13 barley varieties and two mixtures. The fitting of this response surface model predicted grain yields within ±200 kg ha−1 when tested from booting to flowering stages.  相似文献

The distribution of A1 and A2 mating types, and of metalaxyl-sensitive (MS), metalaxyl-intermediate (MI), and metalaxyl-resistant (MR) strains ofPhytophthora infestans, the causal pathogen of late blight, were determined in Canada in 1997. Potato plants or tubers and tomato plants or fruits, suspected to have late blight infection, were received from seven Canadian provinces in 1997, and were assessed for the presence ofP. infestans. Among 220 samples suspected to have late blight,P. infestans was recovered from 132 samples (60%) received from British Columbia (BC), Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec. From the 132 samples, 364 isolates were obtained and tested for their mating type and response to metalaxyl. Populations ofP. infestans within Canadian provinces were homogeneous for mating types, except within BC, where populations comprised both A1 and A2 mating types both within fields and sometimes within samples. The A2 mating type was found in all provinces where late blight was present. The A1 mating type was found only in Manitoba (1 isolate) and in BC (38 isolates). Unlike the old A1 isolates, those found in BC in 1997 were highly resistant to metalaxyl. These A1 isolates are even more resistant than A2 isolates. Based on assays with 10 ug.ml?1 of metalaxyl, 14% of all tested isolates were MS, 69.8% were MI and 16.2% were MR. In addition, all provinces contained MS, MI, and MR isolates. No specific mating type or metalaxyl sensitivity level were specific to tomato or potato.  相似文献
