The short-term effect of organic residue management on the growth and nutrition of Pinus pinaster Ait. seedlings, and on nutrient leaching and chemical properties of an acid soil was assessed through a lysimeter experiment. Treatments included absence, placement on the soil surface, and incorporation into the soil (with and without legume cover cropping) of organic residues (forest floor litter or forest floor litter plus harvest residues).
  • ? Residues placed on the soil surface enhanced seedling growth. Organic residues reduced nutrient losses (NO 3 ? , Ca and Mg) and resulted in nutrient accumulation in the soil. Harvest residues positively affected K seedling nutrition status and enhanced K soil accumulation.
  • ? Legume cover cropping reduced soil nutrient losses (N, Ca, Mg and K) during the early stage of seedling growth; it also improved seedling nutrition status (N and P), but without any effect on growth.

  • ? Soil acidification is a global concern. Base cation (Ca, Mg, Mn and Al) concentrations, as well as their molar ratios, were measured in tree rings of Masson pines (Pinus massoniana L.) from Dinghushan and Xiqiaoshan to reconstruct the historical changes in soil acidification in the Pearl River Delta, south China.
  • ? In Dinghushan, Ca and Mn xylem concentrations yielded significant correlations with the higher soil pHs, and Ca and Mg with the lower soil pHs. In Xiqiaoshan, only xylem Mn concentration correlated significantly with the soil pH in both layers. Significant correlations between xylem molar ratios and soil pH were revealed for Ca/Mn, Mg/Mn, Mn/Al and Ca/Al in the upper soils and for the same ratios except for Ca/Al in the deeper soils in Dinghushan. The same correlations were revealed for Ca/Mn, Mg/Mn and Mn/Al at both depths in Xiqiaoshan.

In the present study, allometric biomass equations were developed for Nothofagus pumilio natural regeneration relating foliage, stem and branches (aboveground), roots (belowground), and total biomass to basal diameter and total height, based on destructive measurements of 390 naturally regenerated seedlings and saplings.
  • ? Basal diameter was the most important independent variable in all equations and accounted for more than 88% of the variability of the different biomass components. The addition of height as a second independent variable slightly improved the predictions.
  • ? The best-fit biomass components equations that were based on combinations of basal diameter and height as independent variables had adjusted R 2 values between 0.80 and 0.95 and a mean percent standard error between 21.3% and 26.6%.

  • ? Stand harvesting and regeneration were usually considered to be a critical phase for the sustainability of forest soils. The present study concerned the effects on soil chemical fertility of the clear-cutting of a highly productive Douglas-fir stand aged 67 years that was clear-cut with no disturbance.
  • ? Results showed that soil changes were rapid in the three-year period following the cutting. The forest floor mass considerably decreased and the mineral soil showed a limited but real acidification. Soil losses represented 4% of the available nutrients over a depth of 60 cm for N, 22% for K, 25% for Ca and 32% for Mg. Only P increased by 11%. Due to the spatial variability of forest soils, and despite regular re-sampling, confidence intervals were large and difficult to reduce.
  • ? The reversibility of the effects of the clear-cutting and its consequences on soil functions depend on the element: it should not be a problem for C, N and K, which would recover when the biological cycle is re-established once again in the young stand. Phosphorus is not at issue since it changes form in the soil. The depletion of Ca, and to a lesser extent of Mg, is of some concern as a result of limited soil reserves, the limited flux of cations from the mineral changes in the soil, the relatively large part of Ca and Mg in the forest floor, and the negative input-output budgets for those elements.

  • ? The objectives of this study were to measure litterfall production of the four floodplain forest types and to analyze the relationship between litterfall (forest type, dominant species, and organic fractions) and flood pulses.
  • ? Litterfall production was measured in two mono-specific stands of Salix humboldtiana or Tessaria integrifolia, respectively, and two mixed forests dominated by A. inundata or Nectandra angustifolia, during 1998 and the 2000–2002 periods.
  • ? Mono-specific stands presented similar productivities (6.8 and 6.5 Mg dry matter ha?1 y?1, respectively), but differed significantly from the two other. The highest litterfall production was obtained during the large flood that occurred during 1998, decreasing later throughout the study period. Leaves were the dominant fraction of litterfall, followed by branches, flowers, and fruits.
  • ? Only S. humboldtiana, T. integrifolia and A. inundata forests showed distinct patterns of litterfall production, depending on the flooding pulse. N. angustifolia did not show a distinctive litterfall pattern.

  • ? Soil resources are heterogeneously distributed in terrestrial plant communities. This heterogeneity is important because it determines the availability of local soil resources. A forest fire may change the spatial distribution of soil nutrients, affecting nutrition and survival of colonizing plants. However, specific information on the effects of ecosystem disturbance on the spatial distribution of soil resources is scarce.
  • ? We hypothesized that, on a short-term basis, wildfire would change the spatial patterns of soil N and P availability. To test this hypothesis, we selected two Pinus canariensis forests burned in 2005 and 2000, respectively, and a third forest that was unburned since at least 1990 (unburned). We incubated ionic exchange membranes (IEMs) in replicated plots to estimate soil N and P availability and characterized the spatial pattern using SADIE (Spatial Analysis by Distance Indices).
  • ? Mineral N, NO3-N and PO4-P availability, and aggregation and cluster indices for all nutrients were higher in the 2005 wildfire plots than in the 2000 wildfire and unburned plots.

Our results suggest that surviving plants or new individuals becoming established in a burned area would find higher soil resources, but also higher small-scale heterogeneity in nutrients, which may have a major impact on the performance of individual plants and on the forest structure and dynamics.

  • ? In this study we analyzed heterogeneity in nutrient cycling induced by trees in Mediterranean annual grasslands, comparing years of higher and lower than average precipitation and analyzing the effects of two different solar radiation scenarios.

Organic matter and consequently upper soil N, K, Ca and Mg were significantly greater in those locations receiving the highest levels of solar radiation, and as expected from many other studies in the literature, there was an increase in all macronutrients (except P) as well as pH below the canopy.
  • ? Contrary to what was expected, plant nutrient concentrations did not directly reflect those found in the soil, with the exception of K. The studied grassland responded to increased nutrient availability by enhancing growth and changing botanical composition rather than by increasing plant nutrient concentrations. Hence, the total amount of accumulated nutrients in the ecosystem was larger below the tree than outside it, although this is mainly a consequence of plant growth enhancement. The levels of Ca, Mg, and Na in plants decreased during the driest year, and the N content was mostly determined by the composition of the grass.

  • ? In the tropical intertidal zones, little is known on water uptake by mangroves. Transpiration rates are generally measured at leaf level, but few studies exist on water use at tree or stand levels.
  • ? The objective of this study was to measure sap flow in trees of different sizes to appreciate the range of variation in water use that may exist in a site dominated by 80% mature Avicennia germinans.

Three-week-old maritime pine seedlings were planted in pots containing either mineral soil (MS) or mineral soil covered with a forest floor layer (MS+FF).

  • ? Fall fertilization may increase plant nutrient reserves, yet associated impacts on seedling cold hardiness are relatively unexplored.
  • ? Bareroot red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) seedlings in north-central Minnesota, USA were fall fertilized at the end of the first growing season with ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) at 0, 11, 22, 44, or 89 kg N ha?1. Seedling morphology and cold hardiness [assessed by freeze induced electrolyte leakage (FIEL)] were evaluated six weeks after fertilization and following the second growing season.
  • ? Seedling height and number of needle primordia increased with fertilizer rate for both sampling years. Seedlings fertilized with 44 and 89 kg N ha?1 attained target height (15 cm) after the second growing season. Shoot and root N concentration increased after the first growing season in fall fertilized seedlings compared to controls. Fall fertilized seedlings had lower FIEL (i.e., increased cold hardiness) compared to controls when tested at ?40 °C after the first growing season, but no significant differences in FIEL of control and fertilized seedlings were observed after the second growing season.
  • ? Results suggest that fall fertilization of red pine seedlings can help render desired target height in the nursery, while maintaining or increasing cold hardiness levels.

    The ecological importance of fallowing to swidden (slash and burn) agriculture is well known. Cyclic agroforestry systems which emphasize utilization of the fallow cycle should, where appropriate, consider the ecologic processess of site recovery, so as not to impair the productivity of the subsequent swidden cycle. this artical discusses the ecologic ‘fit’ of a cyclic swidden-fallow management scheme into swidden cultivation and fallow succession. Such a fit suggests a reciprocally reinforcing situation between this agroforestry design and processes involved in site recovery. Observed among some indigenous and colonist inhabitants of the Peruvian Amazon, this system produces fallow crops and products, while enhancing site nutrient recovery. The economic benefits of this scheme have recently been reported (Denevan and Padoch, n.d.) while the ecologic attributes involved in promoting site recovery have not; primarily these include:
    1. Less destruction of the nutrient cycling root-mat in the swidden cycle, and its quicker re-formation in the fallow cycle.
    2. Discouraging the establishment of exotic, pantropical weeds and grasses such as imperata, while encouraging the colonization of local, early successional species.
    3. Encouraging the earlier establishment of woody plants in abandoned swiddens.
    4. A natural litterfall higher in nutrients than in unmanaged fallows.
    5. Additions of ‘slash’ litterfall higher in nutrient content than natural litterfall in the proximity of valuable managed plants.
    6. The increased capacity of the managed stand to scavenge limiting nutrients such as N and P from, and leach unneeded quantities of non-limiting nutrients such as K, Ca and Mg to, thoughfall.
    7. Increasing the alkalinity of throughfall, possibly resulting in less soil cation leaching in managed fallows.
    8. Staggering seed production, germination and maturation times of the rapid nutrient sycling softwood trees.
    9. Increasing the spontaneously occuring abundance of valuable fallow plants with management of successive fallow cycles, thereby possibly reducing the labor requirement, and increasing the value of this agroforestry scheme over time.

  • ? Aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) regenerates at high densities following manual cleaning.
  • ? Ten-year-old stands located near Lac La Biche and Peace River, Alberta were manually cleaned to three densities (0, 500 or 1 500 stems ha?1) at three times (bud set, dormancy or bud flush) to test the hypothesis that maintaining residual aspen reduces regeneration.
  • ? At Lac La Biche up to 98% of the aspen regeneration died in the partially-cleaned plots compared to 67% at Peace River five years post-treatment. A spring frost in the second growing season at Lac La Biche is hypothesized to be the inciting factor predisposing the stump sprouts to infection by decay fungi such as Armillaria root rot, resulting in reduced density and height of the aspen regeneration at Lac La Biche relative to Peace River. Drought and ungulate herbivory provided additional stresses. The high mortality of aspen regeneration at Lac La Biche shifted the understory regeneration from aspen to balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera L.).
  • ? These results indicate that maintaining 1 500 stems ha?1 of residual aspen will not effectively control the re-sprouting of aspen; however, the vulnerability of aspen regeneration to spring frost and other stressors can nearly eradicate the re-growth of aspen.

  • ? We have used element budgets and Sr isotopic variations in soils and plants to investigate the mineral nutrient supply sources of the different plant communities.

  • ? The development of truffles in the soil is not well understood. It is not known if a direct transfer of carbohydrates takes place between the host tree and the developing ascocarps through ectomycorrhizal structures or whether sporophores become independent from their hosts after several weeks or months and are able to use dead host tissues or soil organic matter as carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) sources.
  • ? To study saprophytic or symbiotic capacities of truffle ascocarps the natural abundance of 15N and 13C in foliage, wood, fine roots, mycorrhizae, fungal sporophores and soil were determined in a truffle orchard.

  • ? The objective of this study was to explore the distribution of major nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) in the aboveground compartments of an intensively managed tree species (Pinus pinaster Ait.). A total of 53 trees were cut down in even-aged stands respectively 8, 16, 26, 32 and 40 years old. The nutrient concentrations of the aboveground compartments were analysed.
  • ? Nutrient concentrations of foliage did not vary with any of the variables used, except needle age. Nutrient concentrations of living branches, stem bark, stem sapwood, stem heartwood, stemwood and stem decreased with increasing branch diameter, bark thickness, sapwood thickness and heartwood thickness, respectively. Beyond a certain value of the predictive variable (stem diameter ≈ 15 cm; branch diameter ≈ 2.5 cm), the concentration of all the nutrients stabilised.
  • ? A 50 year-old pine stand was used to obtain a validation dataset for nitrogen concentration. For this nutrient, the regression relationships gave satisfactory estimates for most compartments (mean error = 12–25%) and particularly for the stem.

A site preparation study was established in 1986 to evaluate the effect of different site preparation treatments on growth and yield of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations on the Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain regions of the southern United States. Site preparation treatments included: (1) burn only, (2) chop-burn, (3) shear-pile-disk, (4) chop-herbicide-burn, (5) herbicide-burn, and (6) herbicide-burn-herbicide.
  • ? The data from the available 19 installations at age 21 were analyzed with separate analysis of variance and a multilevel nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach.
  • ? The herbicide-burn-herbicide treatment significantly increased average Dbh, height, basal area and volume per hectare compared to all other treatments. The burn only treatment consistently ranked worst and was followed by the chop-burn treatment. The shear-pile-disk and chop-herbicide-burn treatments had similar overall growth pattern, and will approach the same level of pine volume as the herbicide-burn treatment.

  • ? Liming is a forestry practice used to counteract forest decline in acidic soils. It consists of direct Ca and Mg input to forest soil, which restores tree mineral nutrition, but also modifies microbial communities in soil. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of liming on both belowground (ectomycorrhizal root tips) and aboveground (epigeous sporocarps) fungal communities.
  • ? Results showed that the modification of soil chemical properties (pH, and Ca-Mg contents versus total free Al and Fe concentrations) was a stronger factor of ECM community structuring than tree host. The species appearing in limed plots were ubiquist or known as good competitors and replaced acidophilic and stress species.
  • ? At the sporocarp level, tree host was a stronger factor of community structuring than soil chemical properties associated with liming. On the whole, there was a shift in the community composition from a typical acidophilic forest fungal community of medium altitude in the untreated plots to a less typical one, with the reduced dominance of acidophilic fungi while many late-stage forest species appeared.
  • ? We finally suggest a marker species (Russula ochroleuca) to assess both above and belowground effects of liming on ectomycorrhizal communities.

  • ? In the 1940s–1950s, large limba (Terminalia superba Engl. & Diels) plantations were established in the Democratic Republic of Congo to reduce the pressure on the natural forests.
  • ? The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of these long-rotation plantations as production forests (timber) and carbon sinks.
  • ? Five different plantations, between 50 and 58 years old, were sampled. Over a sample surface of more than 73 ha, the diameter above buttresses of 2 680 trees, bole height of 265 trees and tree height of 128 trees was measured.
  • ? To estimate the commercial volume, a nonlinear power law regression was used (R 2 = 0.95). A power law variance function was applied to counter heteroscedasticity of the residual plot. Estimates of commercial tree and stand volume at 50 to 58 y were 5.6 ± 4.1 m3 and 183.9 ± 135.0 m3 ha?1. Stand volumes appear low but are explained by a large decrease in tree density. However, the mean volume increment of 3.2–3.7 m3 ha?1 y?1 corresponds well with teak plantations of a similar age. For limba, aboveground biomass and carbon estimates of this study (resp. 108.4 and 54.2 Mg ha?1) differ significantly from those of existing aboveground biomass models (resp. 135.7–143.9 Mg ha?1 biomass and 67.9–72.0 Mg ha?1 C). All aboveground biomass and carbon estimates for T. superba stands were lower than for the estimates of young fast-growing plantations like Tectona grandis L. f., Eucalyptus spp. and Acacia spp. (≤ 30 y).

  • ? Carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems is an important though still uncertain process in the global greenhouse gas balance.
  • ? We computed biomass organic carbon (BOC) stocks of spatially explicit forested landscape units (LSU) in Belgium based on data collected in the regional forest inventories of 1984 (Wallonia region only) and 2000 (Wallonia and Flanders). C stock changes between 1984 and 2000 were estimated for Wallonia.
  • ? The total BOC pool stored in Belgian forests in 2000 amounts to 57.8 Mt C in 6222 km2, or 10.0 kg C m?2 in broadleaf, 9.5 kg C m?2 in coniferous and 8.7 kg C m?2 in mixed forest. Based on previous soil organic carbon (SOC) analysis for the same LSU, BOC and SOC stock per LSU appeared only weakly correlated. The total BOC sequestration between 1984 and 2000 equals 5.7 Mt C over an area of 5 107 km2, resulting in a flux of 0.07 kg C m?2 y?1. The BOC content of broadleaf forest in Wallonia increased with 6%, of coniferous forest with 32% and of mixed forest with 11%.
  • ? The observed regional differences in BOC stocks and in BOC sequestration rates are explained by the forest age-class distribution and site productivity. The strength of the spatially explicit approach lies in the fact that BOC and SOC data originating from diverse sampling strategies can be combined for spatial or temporal comparison of C stocks.

  • ? Old oaks (Quercus robur L.) play an important role in the southern Scandinavian landscape by providing habitat for a wide range of species, a large proportion of them being currently on the National Redlists.
  • ? To provide support for the management of these trees, we review data on oak mortality and formulate a mortality-driven stochastic model analysing interactions between mortality rate, oak recruitment rate into 100–150 age class, and amount of oaks older than 200 years.
  • ? Empirical annual mortality rates varied between 0 and 13% with average 1.68%. Trees older 200 years had an average mortality rate of 1.1%. Oaks in the high density forests showed higher mortality (3.2%) as compared to the trees growing in the low density forests (1.2%). A 400-year long modelling exercises indicated that under current mortality rates (regular mortality being centred around 1% annually; and irregular mortality 7% with average return time of 13 years) the long-term maintenance of 20 trees older than 200 years per ha would require an input rate of 1 to 5 trees × year?1 × ha?1 into the 100–150 years old class.
  • ? The modelling highlighted the importance of initial oak abundance affecting amount of old trees at the end of shorter (100 years) simulation period.
