Histological examination was performed in 123 cats with primary nasal and paranasal sinus tumours; 117 had undergone surgical biopsy and six necropsy. Special stains and immunohistochemistry were performed on poorly differentiated cases. Ninety-two percent (113/123) of the tumours were malignant. There was an increased risk for old cats (mean age of 10.9 years), and a male predilection (59% males). Clinical signs and breeds varied with the histological type of tumour. Thirty-nine percent (48/123) of the cases presented with nasal discharge, 21% (26/123) with dyspnea, 20% (24/123) with facial swelling, and 15% (19/123) with epistaxis. Forty-three percent (53/123) of the tumours were of epithelial origin. Adenocarcinomas (18/53) and squamous cell carcinomas (17/53) were the most common epithelial tumours. Fifty percent (26/53) of the epithelial tumours originated from the pseudo-stratified respiratory epithelium of the nasal cavity, 28% (15/53) from the stratified squamous epithelium of the vestibule, 9% (5/53) from olfactory epithelium, 9% (5/53) from submucosal glands and 4% (2/53) from minor salivary glands. Malignant lymphoma (35/123) was the most common tumour. Seventy-one percent (25/35) of the malignant lymphomas were B-cell tumours and 29% (10/35) were T-cell tumours. Six cases of malignant lymphomas were proved to be epitheliotropic T-cell lymphomas. This is the first report of a primary nasal epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma in cats.  相似文献

Twenty-three cesarean derived, colostrum deprived pigs were obtained at 5 wk of age and inoculated intranasally with either 1.4 x 10(8) colony forming units of Haemophilus parasuis or sterile phosphate buffered saline. Pigs were euthanized at 4, 8, 12, 18, 26, or 36 h post-inoculation and tissues from the oropharynx and respiratory tract were obtained for qualitative bacterial culture, immunohistochemistry for H. parasuis antigens, and light and transmission electron microscopy. Haemophilus parasuis was consistently isolated from the nasal cavity (17/17, 100%) and trachea (13/17, 76%) and rarely isolated from the lung (3/17, 18%) and blood stream (1/17, 6%) of infected pigs. Antigens of H. parasuis were sporadically detected on the nasal mucosa (6/17, 35%) and trachea (8/17, 47%). Light microscopic lesions included submucosal and intraepithelial infiltrates of neutrophils and infrequent, patchy loss of cilia. Ultrastructural changes in nasal mucosal epithelial cells included cell protrusion, loss of cilia, and dilation of the cytocavitary network. Bacteria were infrequently identified and were either within an amorphous material at the apical surface of the cilia or were between individual cilia. These results suggest H. parasuis associates with the nasal mucosa and can induce a suppurative rhinitis with nasal mucosal epithelial cell degeneration. This process may represent an initial event in the pathogenesis of H. parasuis infection of swine.  相似文献

Ten apparently healthy, adult laughing doves were used to document detailed histological, histochemical and surface ultrastructural features of the nasal cavity and to investigate the structure‐function relationship of the nasal cavity in this species. We observed that the nasal cavity of the laughing dove was composed of three main regions: nasal vestibule, respiratory and olfactory. Each region presented a characteristic epithelial lining. The epithelium varied along the nasal vestibule from keratinized stratified squamous rostrally to non‐keratinized stratified squamous in the middle and stratified cuboidal in the caudal region of the nasal vestibule. The respiratory region was lined with pseudostratified columnar epithelium and was initially devoid of both goblet cells and cilia, but cilia then appeared and increased gradually in number close to the olfactory region. The caudal part of the respiratory region presented a stratified cuboidal epithelium. Strong alcianophilic, intra‐epithelial mucous glands were identified, starting at the caudal region of the nasal vestibule and extended into the respiratory region. The olfactory region was lined with a pseudostratified epithelium that consisted of three different cell types: olfactory, support cells and basal cells. In conclusion, the current investigation presents new information concerning the histological, histochemical and ultrastructural features of the laughing dove's nasal cavity. Furthermore, the findings of this study may prove to be a valuable contribution to the avian histology and pathology literature.  相似文献

Studies on the site of proliferation of Pasteurella haemolytica in the bovine nasal cavity have been carried out.

P.haemolytica were isolated from 15 selected major anatomical areas of the nasal cavity in calves with high numbers of P.haemolytica following shipment from Western Canada. When the organisms were present in the nasal cavity of live animals in low numbers, they were isolated from many, but not all, areas. P.haemolytica was isolated post mortem from one or more selected areas of several nasal cavities in spite of negative antemortem cultures.

By the direct fluorescent antibody technique, P.haemolytica was demonstrated at the surface of nasal epithelial cells. Organisms were not seen in or between epithelial cells nor in the ducts nor alveoli of glands. The findings were similar when high and low numbers of P.haemolytica were present in the nasal cavity.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an enzyme upregulated in some human and animal tumors. Enzymatic products are associated with tumorigenic activities. Given the poor response of canine nasal tumors to radiation, we considered the possibility that some of this resistance may be associated with COX-2 expression. To test this, 21 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded, and archived biopsy samples from canine epithelial nasal tumors were analyzed for COX-2 expression using immunohistochemistry. The biopsies were collected from dogs prior to radiation therapy. COX-2 expression was present in 17 of 21 (81%) tumors. The expression was observed in several different tumor types, including nasal carcinomas, adenocarcinomas, and squamous cell carcinomas. Samples from five control dogs without nasal neoplasia were also analyzed for COX-2 staining. These specimens were characterized by varying degrees of lymphoplasmacytic rhinitis with scattered regions of COX-2 positive respiratory epithelial and stromal cells. Whether the intensity and distribution of COX-2 expression in nasal tumors can be used as a prognostic marker requires further investigation. A combination therapy of irradiation and a selective COX-2 inhibitor appears worthy of clinical investigation in the treatment of canine epithelial nasal tumors.  相似文献

An 11-year-old male Shetland sheepdog displayed epistaxis and nasal discharge from the left nasal foramen. Cytological examination of a smear sample obtained by rhinotomy revealed neoplastic mast cells in the nasal cavity, a definitive diagnostic sign of mast cell tumor. The case was treated by surgery combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Eighteen days after the last treatment, marked enlargement of the mandibular lymph nodes and facial edema developed, and the dog was euthanized at the owner's request. At necropsy, metastatic proliferation of mast cells was confirmed in the lymph nodes and liver, but no neoplastic mast cells were observed in the nasal cavity.  相似文献

Response to 3-methylindole (3MI) varies among species. Mice recover from 3MI-induced bronchiolar epithelial injury but sustain persistent olfactory mucosal injury with scarring and epithelial metaplasia. In contrast, 3MI induces obliterative bronchiolitis in horses and ponies, but olfactory mucosal injury has not been reported. To evaluate the effect of 3MI on equine olfactory mucosa, ponies were dosed orally with 100 mg 3MI/kg (n = 9) or corn oil vehicle (n = 6). All ponies treated with 3MI developed obliterative bronchiolitis with mild olfactory injury. By 3 days after 3MI dosing, olfactory epithelium appeared disorganized with decreased and uneven surface height and scalloping of the basement membrane zone. Epithelial cells of Bowman's glands were hypertrophic. Proliferation of olfactory epithelium and Bowman's glands was supported by an increased mitotic index and positive immunohistochemical staining for proliferating cell nuclear antigen as compared with controls. The activity of 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, an olfactory mucosal cytosolic enzyme localized to sustentacular and Bowman's glandular epithelial cells, was concurrently decreased. By 9 days postdosing, olfactory mucosal lesions had lessened. Results indicate that 3MI transiently injures equine olfactory mucosa without the extensive necrosis, scarring, or metaplasia seen in murine olfactory mucosa or in equine bronchiolar epithelium.  相似文献

Both conventional and specific pathogen free pigs were inoculated intranasally with a strain of Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV). Nasal cells were collected daily by swab, aspiration or wash. The nasal cells were examined for ADV by isolation on cell culture, direct or indirect immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase staining by monoclonal antibodies. The infected pigs were studied for nasal shedding of infected cells until 30 days after infection. The study was also extended to naturally infected farm pigs. Swabbing, washing and aspiration proved effective methods of collecting between 10(5) and 10(8) pavement or columnar epithelial cells and non-epithelial cells. Macrophages and polymorphonuclear leucocytes were also identified. Infected nasal cells were detected by immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase from one to 21 days after infection. The viral antigen was detected in both epithelial and non-epithelial cells, the fluorescence was nuclear and, or, 'cytoplasmic', in the latter case only the cell membrane was stained. ADV antigens were detected in nasal cavity cells in pigs infected with a virulent and a hypovirulent strain. Nasal swabs proved effective in confirming infection both by virus isolation and immunological assay, and the latter was shown to be a useful experimental tool for the rapid diagnosis of Aujeszky's disease virus infection in fattening pigs suffering from acute respiratory distress.  相似文献

High doses of oestradiol (150 micrograms/kg) or an oestradiol/progesterone combination (150 micrograms/kg oestradiol plus 6.25 mg/kg progesterone) were administered subcutaneously on alternate days to immature ovariectomised and mature intact female Beagle dogs for 13 weeks. The effects of hormonal treatment on different parameters were studied. The results revealed severe anaemia (mainly at week 3) and the blood films showed morphological indication of blood loss and abnormal erythrogenesis. Neutrophil leucocytosis and non-progressive thrombocytopenia were also observed. Treatment with oestradiol alone induced changes in the endometrial stroma and myometrium, whereas treatment with the oestradiol/progesterone combination induced cystic endometrial hyperplasia. The pituitary glands of the dogs treated with oestradiol alone had a slight increase in the number of ACTH cells. These cells and STH cells showed cytological changes indicative of accelerated secretory activity; the PRL and gonadotropin-producing cells were not affected significantly. The oestradiol/progesterone combination increased the number of ACTH and PRL cells. These cells as well as STH cells exhibited several cytological criteria typical of a pituitary cell with accelerated activity; the gondadotropin-producing cells showed involutionary changes. The mammary glands of oestradiol-treated dogs showed stromal and ductal cell proliferation; whereas the oestradiol/progesterone combination induced secretory epithelial cell proliferation in addition to stromal and ductal cell proliferation.  相似文献

3-Methylindole (3MI) damages nasal olfactory epithelium in mice. Lesions were studied histologically from 30 minutes to 28 days after intraperitoneal injection of 400 mg 3MI/kg. Cellular swelling was apparent in olfactory epithelium by 6 hours after injection of 3MI, while respiratory epithelium was normal. Necrosis of olfactory epithelium and subepithelial glands was diffuse by 48 hours. Subsequent ulceration resulted in epithelial hyperplasia, squamous metaplasia, fibroplasia, and ossification. Partially occlusive intranasal fibrous and osseous tissue persisted through 28 days after 3MI injection.  相似文献

Two Bordetella bronchiseptica mutants, lacking the adenylate cyclase (Cya) or both Cya and pertactin (Prn), were compared with their parental strain NL1013 in their abilities to colonize the nose of neonate piglets and to induce local and systemic antibody responses against filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA) after intranasal (i.n.) inoculation. The number of bacteria recovered and the duration of infection in the nasal secretions were greater for the wild-type parent strain than for the Cya-deficient mutant, indicating that Cya plays an important role during B. bronchiseptica colonization of the nasal cavity. The double mutant did not colonize the nasal cavity and was less able to adhere to epithelial cells in vitro than the other two strains, supporting the hypothesis that Prn plays a major role in cell adhesion. In piglets inoculated with the wild type strain, anti-FHA IgM was found in the nasal secretions one week after inoculation, followed two weeks later by anti-FHA IgA; their presence was concomitant with decreases in bacterial counts. Anti-FHA IgG appeared at six weeks after infection in the serum. In contrast, i.n. inoculation with either mutant failed to induce a nasal secretory antibody response but did induce an earlier and higher IgM response in the serum than inoculation with the wild type strain. However, only the Cya-deficient mutant was able to prime the piglets for the development of a secondary nasal IgM and serum IgG response to FHA after intranasal inoculation with the wild type B. bronchiseptica.  相似文献

Objective-To determine glycohistochemical characteristics of enzootic nasal tumors (ENTs) of sheep, compare results for ENT with those of histologically normal nasal mucosa of sheep, and identify the histologic origin of ENT. Sample-ENT and nasal mucosa samples obtained from cadavers of 5 adult Lacaune sheep with ENT and 5 Lacaune sheep unaffected by ENT, respectively. Procedures-Samples of ENT and nasal mucosa were collected from cadavers of sheep and sectioned. Conventional and lectin histochemical analyses were used to identify glycoconjugates in tissue sections on the basis of their principal chemical groups and principal terminal or internal oligosaccharidic glucidic residues, respectively. Results-ENTs had papillary and tubular portions. Cells in the papillary portion of ENTs had secretion and surface glycoconjugates, which included sulfated glycosaminoglycans and neutral and sialilated glycoproteins. Cells in the tubular portion of ENTs had surface glycoconjugates, which included neutral and sialilated glycoproteins. Both portions of ENTs had C(4)-acetylated sialoderivatives that were not detected in sections of histologically normal nasal mucosa. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-The papillary portion of ENTs in sheep may originate from respiratory glands and goblet cells. The tubular portion of ENTs in sheep may originate from olfactory glands. Presence of C(4)-acetylated sialoderivatives in cells of ENTs could confer resistance against pathogens to those cells.  相似文献

High dose of progesterone (25 mg/kg/day) was administered subcutaneously to male and female rats daily for 13 weeks. The effects of hormonal treatment on various parameters were studied. The results revealed increased food consumption associated with considerable weight gain in the progesterone-treated rats. Mucification of the vaginal epithelial cell lining, uterine involution and mild atrophy in the male genital organs were observed. The hypophyseal STH cells exhibited several cytological criteria typical of a pituitary cell-stimulated to accelerated activity; the PRL-, ACTH- and gonadotropin-producing cells were not affected. The mammary glands of the progesterone treated rats showed maximal acinar and minimal ductal and stromal cell proliferation.  相似文献

Sixteen cases of primary neoplasms of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx in the dog were reviewed from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). The mean age of affected dogs was 9.5 years. The presenting clinical signs were epistaxis, nasal discharge or facial swelling. Eleven of the affected dogs were purebred. Three of these were Collies and two German Shepherds. The nasal cavity was involved most often. All neoplasms were malignant (11 carcinomas and five sarcomas), and there was invasion of the adjacent bony structures in most dogs. Tumors were classified according to prominent cell type and degree of differentiation into respiratory epithelial carcinoma (four), adenocarcinoma (one), squamous cell carcinoma (one), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (two), undifferentiated carcinoma (three), chondrosarcoma (three) and undifferentiated sarcoma (two).  相似文献

The case records of 26 dogs with nasal tumours, treated either with radiation alone or surgery and radiation, were compared. One- and two-year actuarial survival rates for 12 dogs treated with radiotherapy were 58 and 13 per cent, respectively, compared to 71 and 38 per cent, respectively, for 14 dogs which were treated with surgery before radiotherapy. Sixty-seven per cent of the dogs treated with radiotherapy had recurrent clinical signs by 52 weeks compared to 36 per cent of the dogs treated with surgery and radiotherapy. The longer disease-free interval of the dogs treated with surgery and radiotherapy was statistically significant. When dogs with sarcomas were compared to those with carcinomas, there was no significant difference in disease-free interval or survival time.  相似文献

Rabies is a zoonotic disease caused by the rabies virus. While the salivary glands are important as exit and propagation sites for the rabies virus, the mechanisms of rabies excretion remain unclear. Here, we investigated the histopathology of the salivary glands of rabid dogs and analyzed the mechanism of excretion into the oral cavity. Mandibular and parotid glands of 22 rabid dogs and three control dogs were used. Mild to moderate non-suppurative sialadenitis was observed in the mandibular glands of 19 of the 22 dogs, characterized by loss of acinar epithelium and infiltration by lymphoplasmacytic cells. Viral antigens were detected in the mucous acinar epithelium, ganglion neurons and myoepithelium. Acinar epithelium and lymphocytes were positive for anti-caspase-3 antibodies and TUNEL staining. In contrast, no notable findings were observed in the ductal epithelial cells and serous demilune. In the parotid gland, the acinar cells, myoepithelium and ductal epithelium all tested negative. These findings confirmed the path through which the rabies virus descends along the facial nerve after proliferation in the brain to reach the ganglion neurons of the mandibular gland, subsequently traveling to the acinar epithelium via the salivary gland myoepithelium. Furthermore, the observation that nerve endings passing through the myoepithelium were absent from the ductal system suggested that viral proliferation and cytotoxicity could not occur there, ensuring that secretions containing the virus are efficiently excreted into the oral cavity.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Low-field magnetic resonance imaging machines are being used more often in veterinary practice for the investigation of sinonasal disease. The aim of this retrospective study was to describe and characterise the low-field magnetic resonance imaging features of nasal tumours in dogs. METHODS: The Queen's Veterinary School Hospital magnetic resonance imaging database (2001-2005) was searched for dogs with a magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis of a nasal tumour. Fifty cases with histological diagnosis of nasal tumour were found. The appearance and extent of the nasal tumour as well as the involvement of adjacent anatomic structures were examined against a checklist. RESULTS: The most common magnetic resonance imaging findings were as follows. (1) Soft tissue mass replacing the destroyed nasal conchae and/or ethmoturbinates (98 per cent of cases). (2) Nasal septum destruction (68 per cent of cases). (3) Retained secretions with or without mass caudally in frontal sinuses (62 per cent of cases). (4) Nasal/frontal bone destruction (52 per cent of cases). Low-field magnetic resonance imaging allowed differentiation of tumour tissue from retained secretions or necrotic tissue. Magnetic resonance imaging was invaluable in assessing the extension of the tumour into the maxillary recesses, caudal recesses, nasopharynx, adjacent bones and cranial cavity. The tumour often extended caudally into the frontal sinuses, nasopharynx and perhaps most importantly into the caudal recesses. Tumour extension into the cranial cavity was not common (16 per cent), and only three of these cases showed neurological signs. However, 54 per cent of cases showed focal meningeal (dural) hyperintensity, although the significance of this is unclear. A significant difference (P<0.05) in tumour signal intensity between the sarcomas and carcinomas was found. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The use of a low-field magnetic resonance imaging technique is excellent for the diagnosis and determination of extent of sinonasal tumours.  相似文献

An eosinophilic substance (ES) is usually observed in the mouse nasal septum and increases in volume with aging. It has been described as amyloid in textbooks and one report. However, it has been described as "not amyloid" in other reports because there was a negative reaction to Congo red. In this study, the ES was investigated histopathologically and electron microscopically to determine whether it was amyloid or not. The ES was only observed at the interstitium of clear HE-stained nasal glands in the septum, in which 2 kinds of glands were present (dark and clear stained by HE). The volume of the ES was small in young mice and large in older ones. Neither nasal gland degeneration nor inflammation resulted, even if a large amount of the ES was observed. The ES reacted negatively to Congo red but was strongly positive to periodic acid-Schiff reaction with prior diastase treatment. In the electron microscope observation, the ES consisted of amorphous material and collagen, but no nonbranching fibrils. Similar amorphous material was also observed in the nasal gland epithelial cells and was connected to the material in the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The above-mentioned findings indicated that the ES was not amyloid and suggested the ES might consist of not only collagen but also complex carbohydrate, which was produced by the nasal gland epithelial cells.  相似文献

The interaction between Bordetella bronchiseptica and type D toxigenic Pasteurella multocida was studied in five groups of 4 specific-pathogen-free (SPF) piglets each. At 28 days of age, piglets of groups 3 and 4 were inoculated into both nostrils with 10(8) colony-forming-units (CFU) of a non-dermonecrotic toxin (DNT)-producing, phase I strain of B. bronchiseptica. Piglets of groups 1 and 3 were treated intranasally with a sonic extract of the non-toxic strain of B. bronchiseptica and those of groups 2 and 4 with B. bronchiseptica DNT into the left nostril. Sonic extract and DNT treatment was started at 33 days of age and lasted for 5 days. Piglets of group 5 served as controls. At the age of 37 days, piglets of all groups except group 5 were inoculated into both nostrils with 5 x 10(7) CFU of toxigenic P. multocida. At slaughter at 50 days of age, P. multocida was recovered from the left nasal cavity of 3 piglets of group 2 and all piglets of group 4. In piglets inoculated with B. bronchiseptica DNT the mucosal epithelial cells of the left nasal cavity showed loss of cilia, regressive lesions such as vacuolation, karyopycnosis and necrosis, hypertrophy of the epithelium, infiltration of the epithelium and submucosa by inflammatory cells, could also be seen. The results suggest that action of the B. bronchiseptica DNT on the nasal mucosa is a precondition of the growth of P. multocida in the nasal cavity.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
