>This work describes the utilization of shallow, subtidal bays, associated with rocky shores, by the late-stage larvae and early juveniles of some common inshore fishes. Larval and early juvenile fishes were collected in seven small bays (30–50 m wide) between Port Alfred (33°36’S, 26°53’E) and Hamburg (33°17’S, 27°29’E), using a modified, beach seine net (500 µm mesh). Four bays were sampled weekly during peak fish spawning (September–November 2004) to firstly assess whether larval fishes occur in these previously-unstudiedhabitats and secondly, to assess the extent of this utilization in terms of species occurrence, abundance and potential nursery function. An additional three replicate bays, situated >50 km away near Bira were used for comparison. In total, 14 fish families represented by 26 taxa were recorded but the catch was dominated by a small suite of common species. Bays were extensively utilized by Sparidae (>Diplodus capensis >and >Sarpa salpa>), and to a lesser extent by Clinidae (>Clinus superciliosus>), Mugilidae (>Liza >spp.) and Kyphosidae (>Neoscorpis lithophilus>). Mean CPUE of larvae was high and exceeded 900 individuals per seine haul. Larval abundance peaked at 4000 larvae per haul and at these times, was dominated only by the two sparid species. Abundance of sparid larvae exceeds that recorded for these species in surf zones, estuaries or the shallow nearshore habitatssampled to date in temperate South Africa by an order of magnitude. Larval abundance was significantly higher during new moon sampling throughout the study period, but was not significantly different between repeated samples collected per site on each fieldtrip. The length-frequency of larvae utilizing the bays was dominated by postflexion stages ranging 7–14 mm SL. Length-frequency distribution of >Diplodus, Sarpa, Clinus, Sparodon, Neoscorpis >was indicativeof grow-out and use of bays as interim nurseries. The nursery function of these bays is supported by gut analysis of a sub-sample of the dominant species, >Diplodus capensis, >which showed that these larvae were actively feeding in the area, predominantly on copepods. This work prompts further research on shallow habitats associated with rocky shores particularly the shelter and feeding role that these under-studied habitats are playing in the early life history of coastal fishes.  相似文献

The fish fauna of rocky subtidal gullies between Chelsea Point and Skoenmakerskop (South Africa) was sampled between October 1985 and September 1986 using rotenone to investigate the species composition and the importance of this habitat as a nursery area for marine linefish species. A total of 59 species belonging to 28 families were collected. The majority of these were cryptic fishes such as Clinidae and Cheilodactylidae. Sparidae and Serranidae were represented by juveniles of inshore species. The findings are discussed in relation to previous studies of intertidal pools in the eastern and western Cape, and it is concluded that shallow rocky inter-and infratidal areas are important nursery areas for numerous inshore fishes, including some species caught by recreational line fishermen. The results from this study suggest that previous intertidal studies have over-emphasized the importance of rock pools as nursery areas.  相似文献

Understanding fish movement patterns and migrations is important for fisheries management as well as the identification and conservation of critical habitats. Data collected by the Oceanographic Research Institute's Cooperative Fish Tagging Project (ORI-CFTP) were used to describe the large-scale movement patterns of Lichia amia along the South African coastline. A total of 10 762 L. amia were tagged between 1984 and 2012, of which 744 (7%) were recaptured. Most tagging effort, mainly on juvenile and subadult individuals, took place along the south-eastern (i.e. Eastern Cape) and south-western (i.e. Western Cape) regions of the country during summer. Conversely, more L. amia were tagged and recaptured (mostly adults) during winter and spring (July to November) along the north-east coast (i.e. KwaZulu-Natal). Movements (dispersal distance in kilometres) by juveniles were restricted and largely confined to estuaries within the south-eastern and south-western regions of the country. There was a significant effect of fish size on distance moved (ANOVA: p<0.001), with evidence of a distinct seasonal (winter) longshore migration by adults to KwaZulu-Natal. The consequences of juvenile residency in estuarine habitats and high recapture rate of adults during a directed, seasonal spawning migration are discussed in light of improving current fisheries management.  相似文献

The contents of the alimentary tracts of D. sargus capensis were analysed to establish diet composition. The importance of analysing stomach, intestine and total alimentary tract, separately, is emphasized. D. sargus capensis is an omnivore preying on lower intertidal and shallow subtidal benthic species. Cirripedia and algae were the most important groups and constitute ca. 60% of the total dietary composition. Ulva sp., Perna perna and Balanu, spp. were prefered species. A new index for ranking prey items, which combines the modified points method and the frequency of occurrence method, is suggested. It is especially useful for omnivorous fish where prey items sucl as seaweed and colonial organisms are difficult to enumerate. Ambosexual individuals differentiate into functional males or functional females. Active spermatogenesis in the ovo-testis suggests a special type of protandric development. D. sargus capensis has an extended breeding cycle with a peak spawning period from October to December.  相似文献

Two invasive mussel species are known from South Africa, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Semimytilus algosus. Most of the existing research on these invaders has focused on the intertidal zone, with little attention paid to subtidal habitats. This study addresses this knowledge gap by quantifying the relative abundance and size of native and alien mussels from the high-shore down to the subtidal zone, while accounting for the effects of wave exposure. This was achieved through extensive surveys along the west coast of South Africa and the Cape Peninsula. At all shore zones, mussel abundance varied among species and wave exposures. In intertidal habitats, invasive species were recorded in greatest abundances at wave-exposed sites. Specifically, M. galloprovincialis was dominant in the high-shore, but this pattern changed down the shore. In the mid-shore, the invaders were equally dominant over native mussels, while in the low-shore S. algosus became the most abundant. Notably, the native Choromytilus meridionalis was absent intertidally. In the subtidal zone M. galloprovincialis was rarely present, whereas S. algosus maintained a strong presence. The maximum size of native Aulacomya atra and invasive S. algosus in the subtidal zone was roughly double that recorded in the intertidal zone. Importantly, these results highlight that observations made from intertidal studies of mussel invasions cannot be used to infer subtidal patterns.  相似文献

Sharpsnout bream (Diplodus puntazzo) has been used in Adriatic aquaculture for less than a decade, but the decreasing trend of rearing this species will probably result in its complete substitution by more exploited sea bream (Sparus aurata). Only two facilities still rear both fish species in neighbouring cages in monoculture. A switch of parasites was observed between sparids during monitoring of the gill monogeneans of farmed fish. In wild fish of the Adriatic Sea, Lamellodiscus elegans (Monogenea: Monopisthocotylea) has previously been reported in annular (Diplodus annularis), and two-banded sea bream (D. vulgaris) and sharpsnout bream (D. puntazzo), and the present study confirmed its presence also in sea bream, in low prevalence and abundance. The exclusively sea bream monogenean Sparicotyle chrysophrii (Monogenea: Polyopisthocotylea) was also isolated from sharpsnout bream, showing prevalence and abundance values even higher than in its resident host. In the occurrence of L. elegans in sea bream, the opportunistic switch resulted in lower abundance and prevalence than in the original host, while in the second case of switching the monogenean S. chrysophrii showed better reproductive capacity on a new host (sharpsnout bream). Both cases point to the possible enlargement of parasite host range.  相似文献

Abstract

Largemouth bass virus (LMBV) is an iridovirus that was isolated from wild adult largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides in the southeastern United States in 1994. Although originally isolated from moribund wild fish, its virulence to juvenile largemouth bass is uncertain. To help clarify this point, two LMBV titrations were made in juvenile largemouth bass. Titers of LMBV in fathead minnow cells were 104.8 and 105.8 tissue culture infectious doses—50% cytopathic endpoint (TCID50) per milliliter, respectively. Tenfold serial dilutions of LMBV employed in each cell culture titration, injected intraperitoneally (0.1 mL/fish) into largemouth bass produced calculated lethal dose—50% mortality endpoints (LD50s) of 282 (102.45) and 288 (102.46) infectious doses in two consecutive infectivity trials. Virus yield of assayed infected fish averaged 108.5 TCID50/g and 107.7 TCID50/g in viscera of moribund and dead fish in the two trials and 106.5 TCID50/g in surviving exposed fish 14 d after infection. In a second experiment, largemouth bass had 100% mortality 5 d after injection while virus immersed fish had a significantly (P ≤ 0.005) lower mortality of 17% at 14 d. Similarly treated juvenile striped bass Morone saxatilis suffered 63% mortality after injection and significantly (P ≤ 0.005) lower mortality of 10% after immersion. In a third study of 25 d, 100% of injected largemouth bass died by 5 d after injection, and all of them were virus-positive. Injected striped bass had a significantly (P ≤ 0.005) lower mortality of 24%; all three fish were virus-positive initially, two fish were virus-positive at 18 d, and none were positive at 25 d. Juvenile largemouth bass were highly susceptible to LMBV injection and striped bass were moderately susceptible, but both species were only mildly susceptible when exposed by immersion.  相似文献

Abstract

Cell lines from white sturgeon Acipenser transmontanus were derived from peripheral blood cells, heart, and spleen. Incubated with infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) for 8 d at l5°C, these cell lines produced 0.7–53.2 plaque-forming units (PFU)/cell. Waterborne exposure of larval white sturgeons (60 d posthatch) to 106 PFU/mL of IHNV resulted in 10% mortality 5–6 d postinfection, with virus concentrations consistently greater than 105 PFU/g. A replicate group of larval white sturgeons that were sampled at different times post-IHNV exposure had no detectable virus at 24 h, but 72% of the fish had IHNV concentrations of 102-106 PFU/g when they were examined 2–9 d postinfection. Juvenile white sturgeons (mean weight, 35 g) immersed in or injected with IHNV exhibited no mortality, and virus was only detected immediately postexposure in just 25% of the fish tested. Juvenile white sturgeons fed either virus-free rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss or dead IHNV-infected rainbow trout had no viable virus in their feces. Juvenile white sturgeons fed or exposed to IHNV failed to transmit the virus to cohabiting rainbow trout fry. These results suggest that IHNV can replicate in larval white sturgeons but presumably not in juveniles or adults. Virus neutralization activity was detected in serum from adult white sturgeons (4–6 years old) cultured with rainbow trout exposed to IHNV but not in white sturgeons kept in a pathogen-free environment and fed a manufactured diet. White sturgeon serum with IHNV-neutralizing activity was used to passively immunize rainbow trout, and it provided significant (P < 0.01) protection against IHNV challenge.  相似文献

Abstract

Prebiotics recently have been shown to increase immune responses and disease resistance in certain fish species; therefore, the current study was conducted to evaluate the commercially available dairy–yeast prebiotic, GroBiotic-A, for use with juvenile goldfish Carassius auratus. The study consisted of two 10-week feeding trials in which juvenile goldfish were fed practical diets that were either unsupplemented or supplemented with the dairy–yeast prebiotic at 2% by dry weight. Juvenile fish were sorted by size and stocked into 12 units within each of two culture systems: one indoor system supplied with recirculated well water and one system located outdoors with a continuous flow of pond water to provide a source of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Both diets were fed to fish in six units within each system at the same fixed percentage of body weight twice daily. Culture system (i.e., presence or absence of phytoplankton and zooplankton) was the primary factor influencing (P < 0.0001) percent weight gain, feed efficiency, and survival of goldfish during the feeding trials. No dietary effect was detected, although there was a significant (P < 0.05) interaction between culture system and diet, with supplementation of the dairy–yeast prebiotic tending to improve weight gain and feed efficiency of fish in the presence of phytoplankton/zooplankton. During a controlled disease challenge with an intraperitoneally administered dose of Aeromonas hydrophila that was equivalent to a predetermined LD50 (dose lethal to 50% of test fish), average survival values ranged between 67% and 83% for fish that previously had access to phytoplankton/zooplankton compared with 17–33% for fish that had no access to phytoplankton/zooplankton. The dairy–yeast prebiotic, however, did not enhance resistance of goldfish to the bacterial pathogen and did not greatly alter microbiota of the anterior or posterior gastrointestinal tract based on denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis. In conclusion, the dairy–yeast prebiotic did not improve feed efficiency in goldfish or resistance to a bacterial pathogen as previously observed in golden shiners Notemigonus crysoleucas and hybrid bass (white bass Morone chrysops × striped bass M. saxatilis).  相似文献

Abstract

We examined the gills of wild fish collected from central Texas for Centrocestus formosanus metacercariae to determine whether this temperature-restricted parasite had invaded the thermally dynamic Guadalupe River via an introduced population in its thermally stable tributary, the Comal River. We collected fish from three sites in the Guadalupe River near its confluence with the Comal River (upstream, at, and downstream) and one site in the Comal River. Centrocestus formosanus infected 14 of the 25 species examined (56.0%) and 171 of the individual fish (27.1%). Several of the infected fish represent new host records for the parasite, and two are listed as species of special concern by the state of Texas. Mean metacercarial intensities varied from 8 to 616 among species, and the highest recorded intensity was greater than 800 in two Guadalupe roundnose minnow Dionda nigrotaeniata. Among the 24 species examined from the Guadalupe River, 11 (45.8%) were infected with C. formosanus. Thorough surveys at the study sites yielded no living specimens of the first obligate intermediate snail host (red-rim melania Melanoides tuberculatus), which must be present to perpetuate the parasite. Thus, the infections were probably due to drifting cercariae that had been shed into the water column upstream of the study area in the Comal River. We therefore investigated spatial patterns in cercarial acquisition using caged fish to determine whether drifting cercariae were present in the water column at the study sites. Of 57 uninfected blacktail shiners Cyprinella venusta exposed to Guadalupe River water downstream from and at the confluence, 52 (91.2%) became infected with C. formosanus metacercariae at a mean rate of 4 metacercariae/d. This finding extends the known geographic range of this invasive exotic parasite and is the first report of the life cycle being advanced in the fish assemblage of a thermally variable temperate stream in the USA.

Sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria are a prized seafood species due to their high oil content and white flaky flesh. Raising these species in culture can help to provide an important source of protein for humans and relief to declining wild fish populations. Understanding the environmental factors that influence the production of Sablefish is important for successful culturing. The significance of host–pathogen interactions in Sablefish culture and the resulting environmental implications are unknown. Pathogens could potentially cause losses of cultured Sablefish stocks due to disease, while Sablefish cultured in net pens may also serve as reservoirs for pathogens and potentially transmit disease to wild fish species. In this initial study, the susceptibility of juvenile Sablefish to three bacterial pathogens from the family Vibrionaceae was examined. Listonella anguillarum, Vibrio ordalii, and V. splendidus can pose serious economic threats to cultured fish and shellfish. Groups of juvenile Sablefish were exposed to five concentrations of each of the pathogens. Sablefish were susceptible to L. anguillarum, but were resistant to V. ordalii and V. splendidus at exposure concentrations of ≤1.32 × 107 CFU/mL and ≤3.57 × 106 CFU/mL, respectively. The greatest L. anguillarum concentration examined (8.7 × 106 CFU/mL) resulted in 24% mortality in juvenile Sablefish. A 24% loss of Sablefish stock could significantly influence an aquaculture program. As determined by multiple logistic regression, the survival of Sablefish to L. anguillarum exposure was significantly affected by their body mass, and larger fish had a greater probability of survival. Aquaculture operations could employ various strategies to minimize the loss of juvenile Sablefish by accounting for their size and known susceptibilities to pathogens.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the muscle protein expression in two pikeperches (Stizostedion lucioperca and S. volgense) through intra‐ and intermyomeric composition of white muscles. Using denaturing 10% sodium dodecylsulfate‐polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, muscle protein expression was studied in relation to within‐ and between‐species morphological development, sex, maturity and age of pikeperches. Myosin, actin and troponin have a distinct role in the contraction and length tension of muscle fibers of these species. No obvious intramyomeric differences were found in the myosin heavy chain of both species. Myosin light chains (15–38 kDa) have different expression in different age groups. The muscle protein of the fingerling and adult S. lucioperca had high molecular weight (50 kDa) myosin in contrast to the other Percid species. The molecular weight of actins increased comparatively in low‐age‐group fish. ATP is stored in myosin and released to cause contraction when myosin comes in contact with actin of the experimental fish. Troponin regulates increasing concentration of light‐chain myosin in mature fish. Because troponin T has been implicated in the regulation of skeletal muscle kinetics, muscle contraction kinetics was predicted in different age groups. The muscle proteins of both sexes of these species have polymorphism in various age groups but have no difference in similar aged fish. No muscle protein dimorphism was found in these Percid species. The white muscle protein composition and contractile properties affect power production during fast, unsteady movement and swimming.  相似文献

Juvenile fish occurring in Algoa Bay off the mouth of the Swartkops estuary were collected using a 3-m beam trawl. Pomadasys ollvaceum, Engraulis capensis, Caffrogoblus agulhensls, Argyrosomus hololepidotus and Galeichthys feliceps were the most abundant species in the trawl catches. Despite the proximity of the Swartkops estuary the trawls failed to capture species which are abundant as Juveniles in the estuary and it is concluded that the estuary has little influence on the juvenile fish fauna outside the mouth.  相似文献

Abstract

Bacterial kidney disease (BKD) is an important contributor to mortality of salmonids in hatcheries in the Columbia River basin. However, the impact of BKD on the survival of downstream migrants is difficult to determine because there is little information on the disease-related mortality among these fish. In this study, the impact of BKD on juvenile salmonids was examined by determining the percentage of downriver migrants infected with Renibacterium salmoninarum (the causative agent of BKD) and evaluating the effects of salt water on the progress of the disease. During the 2 years of this study, approximately 20% of the three species of migrating hatchery and wild salmonids (Oncorhynchus spp.) collected were infected with R. salmoninarum. Mortality caused by BKD increased when fish were held in salt water.  相似文献

Abstract

We present a new technique for determining RNA:DNA ratios in larval and juvenile fish that relies on the rapid homogenization of samples with salts, detergents, and proteinase K and the detection of DNA and RNA with specific fluorescent dyes. Samples are not purified before assay of nucleic acids. The technique was designed for use in 96 or 384 well plates and required only 50 μL of sample per well. The detection of RNA and DNA is linear over 500 ng and is sensitive to a nucleic acid content as little as that within 50 μg of tissue. The new technique was used to characterize the RNA:DNA ratio in the white muscle of juvenile mummichogs Fundulus heteroclitus and larval winter flounder Pleuronectes americanus. This technique was compared with other techniques that use fluorescent dyes to determine the RNA:DNA ratio in fish samples.  相似文献

Black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) are an abundant mesopredator on farmlands (croplands and rangelands) across South Africa. Given their adaptability in a changing anthropogenic landscape, knowledge of spatial movements can provide important ecological information on the species. We captured, collared and monitored five black-backed jackals in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal to determine their home range and habitat use in farmlands. The 95% fixed kernel (95% FK) home range sizes were large, showing a marked seasonal variation in movement. One adult male dispersed 150?km over two seasons (winter and spring) and thereafter settled into a home range that it maintained. Transient home ranges of males and juveniles were larger than resident home ranges. The mean resident home ranges (95% FK) across seasons for adult males, adult female and juvenile males were 11.4 ± 4.3 km2, 5.6 ± 0.36?km2 and 2.15 ± 0.45?km2, respectively. The mean transient home ranges (95% FK) of all the seasons for adult and juvenile males were 1 181.93 ± 575.81 km2 and 104.27 ± 35.64?km2, respectively. Adult jackal preferred croplands in spring, summer and autumn but avoided croplands in winter. Variable habitat use and large home ranges in our study confirmed the species’ ability to adapt to agricultural areas.  相似文献

Abstract

Before 1985, Ichthyophonus was unreported among Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. from the Yukon River; now it infects more than 40% of returning adult Chinook salmon O. tshawytscha. Overall infection prevalence reached about 45% in the Yukon River and about 30% in the Tanana River between 1999 and 2003. Mean infection prevalence was greater in females than males in the main-stem Yukon River during each of the 5 years of the study, but the infection prevalence in males increased each year until the difference was no longer significant. Clinical signs of ichthyophoniasis (presence of visible punctate white lesions in internal organs) were least at the mouth of the Yukon River (~10%) but increased to 29% when fish reached the middle Yukon River and was 22% at the upper Tanana River. However, clinical signs increased each year from 7% in 1999 to 27% in 2003 at the mouth of the river. As fish approached the upper reaches of the Yukon River (Canada) and the spawning areas of the Chena and Salcha rivers (Alaska), infection prevalence dropped significantly to less than 15% in females on the Yukon River and less than 10% for both sexes in the Chena and Salcha rivers, presumably because of mortality among infected prespawn fish. Age was not a factor in infection prevalence, nor was the position of fish within the run. The source of infection was not determined, but Ichthyophonus was not found in 400 Pacific herring Clupea pallasi from the Bering Sea or in 120 outmigrating juvenile Chinook salmon from two drainages in Alaska and Canada. Freshwater burbot Lota lota from the middle Yukon River were subclinically infected with Ichthyophonus, but the origin and relationship of this agent to the Chinook salmon isolate is unknown.  相似文献

The ecology of Sphyraena barracuda was studied in the Kosi estuary system of Natal. Fry enter from the sea at a length of 20 mm and live in shallow marginal weed-beds until a length of 80 mm when they move to fringing Phragmites reed-beds. After reaching 300 mm they move to open water areas. No specimens longer than 500 mm were recorded and none were mature. Growth is rapid, they attain 180 mm in the first six months and after two years measure 400-500 mm. They leave the estuary after about two years. Their significance in the estuarine fish community is due to their predation, at all sizes, on a variety of estuarine-dependent juvenile fishes (e.g. Rhabdosargus spp., Mugilidae) and adults of estuarine species (e.g. Ambassis spp.). S. barracuda was recorded at salinities between 4°/oo and 35°/oo, only in very clear water and at temperatures from 14,4 °C to 37 °C. Sphyraena bleekeri and S. qenie, which are also clear-water species, were found at Kosi in salinities from 0,5 to 35%o. They are also piscivorous on a range of small teleosts. Sphyraena iello is the most widespread barracuda in Natal estuaries, but only juveniles were recorded. This species is tolerant of a wide range of turbidities and salinities which enables it to live under most estuarine conditions. The distribution, ecology and interspecific interactions among Sphyraenidae in Natal estuaries are discussed in relation to their feeding biology, habitat preferenda and physical tolerances.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine oxidative stress parameters in the liver, gill and muscle of silver catfish juveniles infected with Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and maintained at pH 5.0 or 7.0 for three days. Juveniles were infected by adding one I. multifiliis-infected juvenile and water containing theronts to tanks. After the appearance of white spots on the skin, infected juveniles exposed to pH 5.0 and 7.0 showed significantly higher thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels in the liver and gills compared to uninfected juveniles. Liver of infected juveniles exposed to pH 7.0 showed higher catalase (CAT) and lower glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities, but those maintained at pH 5.0 showed significantly higher GST activity than uninfected juveniles. The gills of infected juveniles showed significantly higher CAT (day two) and GST activity at both pH 5.0 and 7.0 compared to uninfected juveniles. Muscle of infected juveniles showed significantly lower CAT and GST activity and TBARS levels (at day three) when maintained at both pH 5.0 and 7.0 compared to uninfected juveniles. In conclusion, I. multifiliis infection induces liver and gill damage via lipid peroxidation products in silver catfish, but higher antioxidant enzyme activity could indicate a greater degree of protection against this parasite.  相似文献

A detailed quantitative investigation of the feeding habits of seven important Natal inshore reef fish (Epinephelus andersoni Boulenger, 1903, Coracinus mulfifasciafus (Pellegrin, 1914), Pomadasys olivaceum Day, 1875, Diplodus sargus Linnaeus, 1758, Sarpa salpa (Linnaeus, 1766), Acanthurus triosfegus Linnaeus, 1758 and Neoscorpls lithophilus (Gilchrist & Thompson, 1908)) is described. Qualitative information on the feeding of 23 other species is also given, and when all species are considered the ratio of carnivores, omnivores and herbivores is 4:1:1.  相似文献
