After the population increase of introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) in Lake Victoria, a decrease in the relative abundance of herbivorous cladocerans and calanoids was reported for the pelagic zone. The shift from large herbivores to small-bodied predatory cyclopoids has been attributed to the increase of the zooplanktivorous cyprinid dagaa (Rastrineobola argentea), which rose concomitantly with the Nile perch. However, we observed that in the Mwanza Gulf of the lake cyclopoids dominated the zooplankton community already before the rise of dagaa. Furthermore, there are indications that dagaa takes fewer calanoids than expected from their representation in the environment, although a slight preference for cladocerans may exist. Calanoids dominated the diet of small Nile perch of about 4 cm length, but juvenile Nile perch did not occur in the study area until after the size shift in zooplankton. The lumped biomass of dagaa and small Nile perch is lower than the biomass of the original haplochromine-dominated community of zooplanktivorous fish. Thus, the decline of large zooplankters in the lake cannot be explained by intensified predation after the replacement of zooplanktivorous haplochromines by dagaa and Nile perch. Increased eutrophication, resulting in a shift in predominance from diatoms to cyanophytes, is suggested as an alternative explanation for the shift in zooplankton composition.  相似文献

Commercial catch and fisheries monitoring data were compared with hydrological and water course characteristics conditions to identify the cause of changes in fisheries production in Berlin water courses since the 1950s. The urban parts of Berlin are densely populated, and the waters are under pressure from shipping, hydraulic engineering, pollution and recreation use. Most Berlin waters are polytrophic or hypertrophic, with an annual nutrient input of 595 t of total phosphorous and 8640 t of total nitrogen. A total of 34 fish species were recorded, eight of which were introduced. According to historical records, seven native fish species are extinct or missing. At present, the fish community is dominated by a few eurytopic species, i.e. roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), common bream, Abramis brama (L.), silver bream, Blicca bjoerkna (L.), and perch, Perca fluviatilis L., which contribute 85% of all individuals caught. Two 'faunal breaks' were identified. The first was the changing of river character from a barbel to bream zone caused by damming and river regulation. This started in the thirteenth century and ended at the beginning of the twentieth century with the extinction of anadromous fishes. The second break was during the 1960s and 1970s, with the eutrophication of Berlin waters and the near total loss of submerged macrophytes. All phytophilic fish species declined greatly and a mass development of eurytopic species started. The catch of pike, Esox lucius L., common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., and tench, Tinca tinca (L.), became negligible, and at present, eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.), and pikeperch, Stizostedion lucioperca (L.), are the main commercial fish species. Concomitantly, the profitability of the fisheries declined and was linked to a decrease in the number of people employed in fisheries by more than 75% compared with 1950.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of eutrophication on fish and fisheries in Finnish lakes were determined by an extensive lake survey conducted in 1995 and 1996. The study lakes (873) were chosen by stratified random sampling from all Finnish lakes with a surface area ≥ 0.04km2 (29,515 lakes in all). The chemical parameters of the lake water were determined for water samples taken in autumn 1995. Information on the fish stocks of the study lakes was collected by means of a postal questionnaire sent to local fishing authorities and lake owners. The results show that the fish community structure is cyprinid dominated, reflecting eutrophication in 2100 lakes (7% of all the target lakes). Strong fouling of the fishing gear, as well as a great abundance of unwanted species in the catch of passive gears, were considered to be a continuous problem in more than 10% of the lakes. Roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), and bream, Abramis brama (L.), were the most common species to have increased in abundance in the study lakes, whereas burbot, Lota lota (L.), and vendace, Coregonus albula (L.), decreased, especially in highly eutrophic lakes. High total phosphorus and cyprinid dominance in lakes were found mainly in the most intensive agricultural regions in the western and southern parts of Finland.  相似文献

Abstract Two rehabilitation projects were compared to determine their feasibility for successfully improving habitat for fish in urban waters. The first re‐meandering project involved channel reconstruction in the Müggelspree upstream of Berlin to create an aesthetically pleasing, stable, meandering channel. The second project addressed a typical habitat bottleneck for fish found in urban waterways; that of nursery habitats lost due to river engineering works. Rehabilitated and control sites were sampled before and after in the Müggelspree and once in the urban Spree River. A total of 30 303 fish belonging to 27 species were collected. The fish assemblage was dominated by generalist species with 81% roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), and perch, Perca fluviatilis L. Species diversity did not improve in either the rural or urban stretch. In the Müggelspree, the loss of riverine habitats was mirrored by significant declines in the densities of chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), ide, Leuciscus idus (L.), gudgeon, Gobio gobio (L.), rheophilic and lithophilic species. By contrast, densities of rheophilic species around the artificial structures created in the urban Spree River, although the main effect was an overwhelming increase in roach and perch. The results suggest that if underlying bottlenecks can be identified, artificial structures can provide functional fish habitat that replaces the natural equivalent in urban river stretches. Consequently, even the most heavily degraded waters provide opportunities to improve fish diversity and fisheries using artificial habitat structures.  相似文献

Gravel pit lakes are increasingly common, and there is an urgent need to better understand the functioning of these artificial and disconnected ecosystems. However, our knowledge of the environmental determinants of fish community structure within these types of lakes remains poor. In this study, we quantified the taxonomic diversity, fish species and life‐stage composition in 17 gravel pit lakes sampled in 2012 and 2013 located in south‐west France to determine the potential role of environmental variables (i.e. lake morphology, productivity, water quality and human‐use intensity) as drivers of fish community structure and composition. Our results demonstrated that fish community structure significantly differed between gravel pit lakes, and we notably found that lakes managed for angling hosted higher levels of taxonomic diversity. We also found that young and large lakes supported higher native species biomass and were dominated by native European perch (Perca fluviatilis). Older, smaller and more productive lakes, located closer to the main urban area, supported a higher biomass of non‐native species such as largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Native and non‐native sport fishing species such as northern pike (Esox lucius), pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and cyprinid prey species were positively associated with fishery management effort, suggesting that management practices play also a critical role in shaping fish species composition. Overall, our study demonstrated that fish community composition followed a predictable shift along environmental gradients associated with the maturation of gravel pit lakes and the associated human practices.  相似文献

Fractional or point-abundance sample (PAS) electric fishing was compared with conventional electric fishing within stop-nets in several shallow, structurally complex, lowland lakes. The two methods tended to sample the fish community in different ways. PAS provided significantly higher total population estimates, partly as a result of the higher estimates for the dominant small fish (e.g. 0 + perch, Perca fluviatilis L.). Fish hidden by cover (macrophytes, branches, etc.) or substrate, such as eels Anguilla anguilla (L.) and ruffe Gymnocephalus cernuus (L.), were also sampled at a higher rate and for eel, this led to considerable variation in biomass estimates between the two methods. It is argued that PAS, rather than electric fishing within stop-nets, provided more accurate estimates of fish population parameters and that PAS had several distinct advantages when used for qualitative and quantitative stock assessment, particularly in shallow lakes dominated by emergent and submerged vegetation.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of perch, Perca fluviatilis L., and bronze bream, Abramis brama (L.), predation on the production of insects emerging at the water surface and the autumn biomass of benthic macro-invertebrates were assessed in a series of experimental ponds. The study attempted to discover whether fish affect food availability for diving and dabbling ducks in freshwater habitats. Ten ponds (bisected by fine netting) were used for the study: one was left totally fish-free, whilst one half of each of three groups of three ponds was stocked with either perch, bream or perch plus bream. The relative abundance of emerging insects (mainly Chironomidae) was significantly reduced in two perch ponds, two perch + bream ponds and two bream ponds. The autumn standing crops of benthic macroinvertebrates were significantly reduced in one perch pond, three bream ponds and one perch plus bream pond. These results support findings of a contemporaneous large bio-manipulation experiment carried out in two adjacent lakes. During the biomanipulation studies, aquatic invertebrate standing stocks greatly increased after the removal of fish and decreased following restocking.  相似文献

We studied the relationships between the planktonic food base and feeding patterns of juvenile mid-summer/early autumn Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis L., a common predatory freshwater fish in large parts of Europe and Asia. The feeding of 0+ perch was studied during summer and autumn in littoral habitats of seven lakes with different environmental conditions – four Latvian (Auciema, Riebinu, Vārzgūnes, Laukezers) and three Estonian (Kaiavere, Prossa and Akste) lakes. Simultaneously, the abundance, biomass and structure of zooplankton communities were examined. We focused on the littoral areas because many studies in lakes suggest that littoral habitats are particularly important for 0+ fish growth and survival. We were interested in the question: can the diet and growth of 0+ perch be explained by zooplankton community structure? We also presumed that if the amount of zooplankton is low, more benthic invertebrates will be consumed by 0+ perch. Opposite to expectations, we found that zooplankton always counted for over 90% of diet biomass in perch. There were also clear correlations between the zooplankton biomass in a given lake, the zooplankton biomass in 0+ perch stomachs, and the fish growth rate. The study also suggested that nutrient enrichment can positively impact the 0+ perch feeding conditions in lakes.  相似文献

Artificial structures can protect fish against predation by cormorants (Phalacocorax spp.). However, their effectiveness in larger water bodies with different fish communities in the presence of natural vegetation still needs to be explored. Using a large‐scale field experiment with 24 ponds stocked with differently composed fish communities, the present study investigates the extent to which the effect of artificial refuges on fish is species‐specific and determined by the characteristics of the fish community. This study provides strong experimental evidence for artificial refuges protecting fish against predation from cormorants, even in the presence of submerged vegetation. The effect of refuges was, however, highly species‐specific and depended on the composition of the fish community. Strong positive effects of refuges on rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus (L.), and roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), populations were observed, especially in ponds where these species dominated. Overall, the total biomass of young‐of‐the‐year, 1‐year‐old and adult rudd and roach was on average 500, 7 and 15 times lower in ponds without than in ponds with refuges, respectively. No effect of artificial refuges on other fish species was found. This study indicates that artificial refuges can facilitate the coexistence of predation vulnerable fish populations with cormorants in lakes and ponds.  相似文献

The Pilica River has warmed at a rate of 0.06°C per year since 1969, threatening the ecological services provided by the Sulejów Reservoir. Gillnet sampling revealed that the reservoir is inhabited by a cyprinid‐dominated fish assemblage with roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.) (42% of the total biomass), the dominant species. However, the interest of the anglers was primarily focused on common bream, Abramis brama (L.) (almost 65% of the catch), as revealed by the catch statistics (2004–2014). No direct evidence was found that the temperature increase had an influence on the recreational fishery or fish assemblage structure. On the other hand, changes in the fish assemblage that were reflected in angler catch composition were observed. A decrease in the catch of common bream in gillnets was accompanied by a shift in angler choices towards roach and other fish species. The sustainability of recreational fisheries is more likely to be influenced by changes in the economic status of society, water quality (toxic cyanobacteria blooms) and water management practices in Poland. The question arises about which species will dominate in the impoundment in the future if the warming trend continues and common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., stocking is maintained.  相似文献

Abstract  The diet of Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., was studied in a large Norwegian reservoir over the first four decades (1954–1995) of regulation. Significant changes in diet occurred concurrent with changes in fish density and prey availability. Reduced biomass of fish due to the effect of hydropower development probably led to reduced inter- and intra-specific competition. Consumption of zoobenthos increased for both species during the first decade, fish then became an important food item concurrent with an increase in small-sized Arctic char in the littoral zone. The diet of Arctic char, but not brown trout, then changed radically as the introduced mysid, Mysis relicta Lovén, became an important food item.  相似文献

Abstract. Salmonid fish at fish farms in northern and central Finland and perch, Perca fluviatilis L., roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), and whitefish, Coregonus sp., from four lakes in central Finland were studied between 1985 and 1990 for the occurrence of Yersinia ruckeri. The bacteria were found in fish from both areas, but in most cases, only single diseased salmon, Salmo salar L., brown trout, S. trutta L., rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), whitefish and perch were encountered and were always connected with stress conditions. One clinical outbreak occured in salmon fingerlings in northern Finland, and the fish were successfully treated with trimethoprim-sulpha. Monthly monitoring of lake fish revealed two symptomless carrier perch in two lakes. Outwith the main study a moribund perch with yersiniosis was found in a polluted lake, and for the first time in Finland, a rainbow trout was also found to have contracted yersiniosis in a small private pond. Sorbitol-positive and negative isolates have been found to occur in both moribund and carrier farmed fish, indicating that the sorbitol test is not essential when evaluating the pathogenicity of Y. ruckeri.

Abstract – Two aspects of size-dependent growth were addressed using perch, Perca fluviatilis L, from 22 Swedish lakes. Firstly, maximum annual growth decreased linearly with length after the previous year. Secondly, median or realized growth showed a non-linear pattern, with minimum growth efficiency at intermediate length, probably related to the shift from invertebrate to fish diet. Between-lake variation in size-related growth efficiency was better explained by fish community characteristics than by abiotic factors. The growth of most size classes was negatively related to fish biomass, especially to biomass of 100 to 199-mm perch. Growth efficiency of perch >200 mm was positively related to the proportion of large perch in the community. These size- and density-dependent growth responses suggest that effects of competitive and predatory interactions will often mask the controlling or limiting effects of abiotic factors, such that realized growth of individuals and populations are poorly described by deterministic asymptotic growth models.  相似文献

Abstract –  We studied the use of two nature-like fishways by 15 fish species ( N  = 240) in the River Emån in southern Sweden. Use of the fishways for both passage and as a habitat was studied by electrofishing, trap catches and PIT telemetry. Of the 187 PIT-tagged fish, 52 individuals from 10 different species ascended one of the fishways for a total passage efficiency of 74%. For the five species that most frequently ascended the fishways, the passage efficiency was 100% for tench ( Tinca tinca L.) and perch ( Perca fluviatilis L.), 86% for chub ( Leuciscus cephalus L.), 60% for burbot ( Lota lota L.) and 50% for roach ( Rutilus rutilus L.). Individuals that failed to pass the fishways were typically small cyprinids or species that were assumed to have taken up residence in the fishways, such as juvenile brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.) and burbot. The nature-like fishways have re-established longitudinal connectivity for most of the studied species and also functioned as rearing and winter habitat for a number of species.  相似文献

Abstract  The densities of perch, Perca fluviatilis L., and roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), were estimated in six and three lakes, respectively, using mark–recapture and ranged from 25–1064 perch ha−1 and 865–2749 roach ha−1. Effects of fish density, net type and water temperature on catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) were analysed by generalised linear models (GLM) and generalised additive models (GAM). GAMs were fitted to estimate the simultaneous linear and nonlinear effects of temperature and density on CPUE. These models showed significant nonlinear effects of density on CPUE – mostly for perch, and also for both species at high densities. The models also revealed that both species had distinct density–temperature criteria of expected maximum CPUE and zero CPUE values. Because of the nonlinear relationship between CPUE and density, it was concluded that CPUE should be used with caution as a proxy of density.  相似文献

Abstract –  Spatial distribution of the fish community in the deep canyon-shaped Římov Reservoir, Czech Republic, was studied using overnight gillnetting fishing in 1999–2007. Effects of depth, distance from the dam to the tributary and habitat type (benthic and pelagic) on fish community structure, catch per unit of effort (CPUE), biomass per unit of effort (BPUE) and average weight were tested. Fish were recorded in all sampled depths and parts of the reservoir. Redundancy analysis revealed that effects of three environmental variables were significant and most variability was explained by depth, then by distance from the dam and habitat type. CPUE and BPUE of all species decreased with depth and responses of individual species to depth were similar for juvenile and adult fish. Number of species, CPUE and BPUE of all species except perch increased heading towards the tributary and peaked close to or at the tributary part of the reservoir. Responses of juvenile fish to distance from the dam differed from that of adult fish. Structure of fish community differed in benthic and pelagic habitats with species preferably occupying epipelagic (bleak, asp, rudd and juvenile bleak, roach and bream) or littoral waters (perch, pikeperch, ruffe, roach, bream and juvenile percids). This study showed that fish distribution in the reservoir followed distinct patterns, which were probably shaped by a combination of physiological constraints plus trade-off between food resources and competition.  相似文献

Abstract  Fish community composition was assessed among six macrophyte habitats, including hydrilla, Hydrilla verticillata (L.F.) Royle, common native species (bulrush, Scirpus spp., muskgrass, Chara spp., eelgrass, Vallisneria americana Michx. and Illinois pondweed, Potamogeton illinoensis Morong) and no-plants, to assess potential impacts of recent hydrilla colonisation on the littoral fish community at Lake Izabal, Guatemala. Fish biomass was significantly different among habitats, with hydrilla supporting the highest fish biomass. Fish density did not differ significantly among habitats. Total fish species richness was similar (12-15 species) among habitats, but community composition changed with macrophyte presence. Biomass of mojarra, Cichlasoma maculicauda Regan, which supported the most important subsistence fishery at the lake, was significantly different among habitats and had the greatest biomass in the hydrilla habitat. Although hydrilla may adversely affect native plants, lake access and other uses, it provided useful fish habitat and likely was not detrimental to the Lake Izabal fish community composition.  相似文献

Abstract– The population dynamics of perch, Perca fluviatilis L., in the absence of a top piscivore, pike Esox lucius L., were examined in simple fish communities in shallow lakes (mean depth < 1.5 m) in northeast Scotland. Perch in Sand and Lower Lochs were unexploited, whereas perch in Loirston were exploited. Population characteristics were fast growth rates, short life span (< 6 years) and no dominant year classes in Sand and Lower Lochs. The strong 1974 year class in Loirston may have been due to intensive exploitation of older age groups. Abundance of perch, expressed as biomass, was low for European waters, namely 30 kg. ha−1 in Loirston (comprising mainly 1 - to 2-year-old-fish), and biomass of adults (≥ 2 years) was 8.9 kg and 4.7 kg. ha−1 in Sand and Lower Lochs respectively. Recruitment in Sand and Lower Lochs appeared to be governed by water temperature, but the overall low abundance and population stability of perch in the 3 lochs was attributed to cannibalism.  相似文献
