The records of 1630 mare years from 6 Thoroughbred stud farms in south eastern Australia were analysed for the years 1981 to 1986. Overall pregnancy and foaling rates were 83.9% and 69.3%, respectively. When calculated per served oestrous cycle, pregnancy and foaling rates were 54.7% and 43.1%, respectively. Pregnancy and foaling rates were higher (P < 0.001) for mares 3 to 10 years of age than for older mares. There was no difference in the pregnancy rates of maiden, barren and foaling mares. The foaling rate was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in mares that became pregnant during the first served oestrous cycle (77.8%) than in mares that needed two served oestrous cycles to become pregnant (65.4%). Of all diagnosed pregnancies, 19.5% were not completed. Pregnancy loss was lower (P < 0.05) in maiden (12.4%) than in barren (19.7%) or foaling (20.9%) mares. Twins were diagnosed in 7.8% of all pregnancies. If one conceptus was lost without external interference, 84.1% of pregnancies went to term. If one conceptus was manually crushed, 55.9% of pregnancies were maintained. If prostaglandin was used to terminate twin pregnancies, 60% of mares so treated produced foals the following year.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between circulating oxytocin (OT) and PGF(2alpha) metabolite (PGFM) in mares at the third stage of labor and placental expulsion time in order to investigate a cause of retained placenta of which the incidence increase in a heavy draft mare. Blood was sampled every 5 min from foaling to expulsion of the placenta in 18 heavy draft mares to evaluate circulating OT and PGFM. The relationships between OT and PGFM concentration and recorded placental expulsion times were investigated. The results were as follows (1) The highest level of OT concentration was observed close to foaling in 15 mares. (2) The OT concentrations close to foaling were variable with a large difference from the lowest concentration, 22.1 pg/ml, to the highest concentration, 209.3 pg/ml. (3) The highest level of PGFM was observed close to foaling in 17 mares. (4) During the 60 min following foaling, the OT concentrations of the mares (n=11) that had a shorter placental expulsion time (i.e., <1 h), were significantly higher than those of the mares (n=7) that had a longer placental expulsion time (i.e., >1 h; P<0.05). Collectively, the OT concentration immediately after foaling is negatively related to the placental expulsion time. Deficiency of OT secretion at foaling have should be considered as one of the causes of retained placenta in heavy draft mares.  相似文献

AIMS: To test published models for predicting time of foaling using data derived from prepartum mammary secretions and to develop a new model based on concentrations of mammary secretion constituents that accurately predicts time of foaling in Thoroughbred mares. METHODS: Concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, citrate and lactose were measured in prepartum mammary secretions of 20 Thoroughbred mares in the 2 weeks before expected date of foaling. Models to predict time of foaling were fitted to data based on absolute concentration, change in concentration, and percentage change in concentration of mammary secretion constituents in relation to actual intervals to foaling. RESULTS: Concentrations of potassium, calcium, citrate and lactose increased, and concentration of sodium decreased as foaling approached but variation between mares was large. Models to predict time of foaling based on percentage change in electrolyte concentrations were less accurate than those based on absolute concentration and change in concentration. When data from this study were fitted to two previously published models, the statistical sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of both models were lower than those originally reported. CONCLUSIONS: The use of prepartum equine mammary secretion electrolyte concentrations for prediction of time of foaling is unreliable, due to large variation in both absolute concentrations and change in concentrations between mares. Models that use a combination of mammary secretion electrolytes and physical and behavioural factors may better predict foaling than those based on mammary secretions alone.  相似文献

Pregnancy loss in mares is thought to be a main problem associated with reproductive efficiency. To clarify the situation of pregnancy loss in Thoroughbred mares in Japan, the occurrence of pregnancy loss before and after 35 days of gestation was investigated with 1,476 Thoroughbred mares in Hidaka, Japan, from 2007 to 2009. Pregnancy loss on days 17-35 was determined by ultrasound examination between 17 and 35 days after the last mating. Follow-up surveys were conducted between 35 days and foaling to determine pregnancy loss on day 35 until foaling in 843 of these mares. Using multiple logistic regression analysis, we assessed the influence of mare age, reproductive status, twin pregnancy reduction, body condition score (BCS), estrus type in foaling mares (foal heat or not), progesterone therapy, and endometrial cysts on pregnancy loss rates on days 17-35 and on day 35 until foaling in this population of mares. The pregnancy loss rates on days 17-35 and on day 35 until foaling were 5.8% and 8.7%, respectively. The overall pregnancy loss rate (day 17 until foaling, including parturient losses) was 14.7%. Risk factors for pregnancy loss included decrease in BCS between 17 and 35 days, <5 BCS at day 35, mating during foal heat, and endometrial cysts. In all, 14.7% of pregnancies were lost between day 17 and birth, contributing significantly to reduced reproductive efficiency in Thoroughbred mares in Japan. These observations indicate that mares should be maintained at high BCS and should be prevented from mating in foal heat to decrease the pregnancy loss rates.  相似文献

Abstract

AIMS: To examine the gestation lengths and occurrence of daytime foaling of Standardbred mares foaling outdoors at stud farms in Southland, New Zealand (latitude 45?S).

METHODS: Data were collected prospectively at two commercial Standardbred stud farms (Farms A and B), during the 2008/9 and 2009/10 breeding seasons (October to February). For each foaling, the identity of the mare, date and time of foaling, gender of foal, time the mare passed the fetal membranes, time the foal stood, and foaling problems including dystocias, were recorded. The effect of farm, season, gender of foal, month of artificial insemination (AI) or foaling, age and parity of mare on gestation length, percentage of mares foaling during daylight hours, and percentage of foalings recorded as dystocia, were examined.

RESULTS: A total of 614 foaling records were obtained from 507 mares. For 594 foalings with complete records, mean gestation length was 349 (SE 0.5) days. Mean gestation length was shorter for fillies (347.8 (SE 0.6) days) than colts (350.3 (SE 0.6) days) p = 0.021) and decreased with month of AI, from October to February (p = 0.001). The time of foaling was bimodally distributed with the primary peak around 0200 hours and a secondary smaller peak around 1300 hours. The percentage of mares foaling in daylight was lower on Farm A (69/285 (24%)) than Farm B (128/313 (41%)) (p = 0.001). Colt foals were less likely to be born during the day than fillies (OR = 0.63; (95% CI = 0.44–0.88); p = 0.008), but there was no effect of age or parity of mare or month of foaling (p>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mean gestation length of mares in this study was longer than that previously reported from other countries. Longer gestation length decreases the time available for these mares to get back into foal in the same season. It is important that managers take this into account and ensure optimum conditions for conception; breeding at the first postpartum oestrus may be essential. There were more mares foaling in daylight hours on one stud than has previously been reported. Under these conditions mares should be monitored for foaling during daytime as well as at night.  相似文献

A retrospective study of 3456 deliveries was conducted from the records of four Standardbred broodmare farms where mares were bred by artificial insemination and maintained under close veterinary supervision. Retained fetal membranes (RFM) were observed in 10.6% of the deliveries. Retained fetal membranes occurred more frequently (p < 0.05) after dystocia and in mares which had RFM the previous year. Retained fetal membranes after normal foaling had no significant effect on the reproductive performance (pregnancy rate, pregnancy loss rate, or foaling rate), nor on the general health of the mares, regardless of the duration of RFM (3 to 144 hours). Postfoaling laminitis was not observed. Oxytocin therapy of mares with RFM starting at two hours postpartum significantly reduced the incidence of RFM ≥ 8 hours. Mares with RFM which had received intrauterine antimicrobials between foaling and first breeding had a foaling rate similar to mares with RFM which had not received intrauterine therapy.  相似文献

Occasionally Caslick vulvoplasty does not resolve the condition of pneumovagina. This study aimed at evaluating the validity of surgical construction of artificial vestibular valve in standing mares. For 10 sedated mares with history of chronic pneumovagina, upside down U-form incision was made on the vestibular mucosa and sutured together to form a large valve after the cover. The surgical site was opened for another cover or foaling and sutured again. The condition of air aspiration into the vagina was monitored ultrasonographically after the surgery. In 9 of the 10 mares, the signs of pneumovagina improved after the surgery and 8 mares had normal foaling the next year. In addition, all mares which had the second surgery after the surgical site was incised for the second cover or foaling were conceived and had normal foaling in the following breeding season. The results revealed that construction of the vestibular valve can be a potential surgical option for the treatment of persistent pneumovagina.  相似文献

In this study, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), leptin, luteinising hormone (LH) and prolactin were analyzed in mares from late pregnancy throughout lactation (group 1, n=46) and in non-lactating mares (group 2, n=11). Plasma GH concentrations in group 1 mares during gestation and lactation were lower than in mares of group 2 (P<0.05). Highest IGF-1 levels were found in lactating mares in the week of foaling. IGF-1 concentrations decreased continuously thereafter. Plasma leptin concentrations decreased after foaling and, for 4 weeks, were lower in lactating than in non-lactating mares (P<0.05). Reduced leptin concentrations may promote feed intake and allow lactating mares to avoid an energy deficit. In group 1 mares, prolactin concentrations reached a maximum in the week of foaling and decreased rapidly thereafter. Plasma LH concentrations in group 1 mares before foaling were lower than at corresponding times in group 2 (P<0.05). LH concentrations then increased and did no longer differ from group 2 until week 2 postpartum. This increase may contribute to the resumption of cyclic ovarian activity in postpartum mares. Subsequently, LH levels in lactating mares decreased again (P<0.05). Increased IGF-1 concentrations early postpartum might contribute to ovarian stimulation while reduced IGF-1 and GH concentrations later in lactation might cause reduced stimulation. The changes in somatotrophic hormones could thus explain, at least in part, a more pronounced stimulation of ovarian function early postpartum than during the following months of lactation.  相似文献

A field study utilizing 145 mares of various age and breeding status was conducted to determine reproductive performance under native range conditions with only limited supplemental feeding. All mares had an average initial body condition score of 4.5 and a final score of 5.1 by the time breeding was completed and mares returned to pasture. Average foaling rate was 80%, and mares that had not conceived during the previous breeding season had a foaling rate of 94%, which was higher (P<.05) than 74% for lactating mares. Mares 16 years and older had a significantly lower foaling rate (P<.05) than younger mares. Old mares that were lactating at time of breeding had only a 37% foaling rate, which was less (P<.05) than for young lactating mares. The 94 mares bred by natural cover or artificial insemination that actually foaled required 1.43 cycles per conception. Lactating mares in the oldest age group required more cycles per conception (P<.05) than open mares, and these older, lactating mares also required more cycles per conception than younger mares with foals at side. Those mares diagnosed as pregnant or open at 45 days post breeding had a pregnancy rate of 97%. Average pregnancy loss for all mares was 7.7%. These data indicate that lactating mares in moderate body condition tended to skip a breeding season and that a body condition score of 5 was only marginally acceptable, especially in the case of lactating mares. Retained placenta is considered to be a common problem in postpartum mares. The incidence varies from 6% to 54% depending on the breed, with higher incidence in heavy draught mares than in light-weight mares. Retained placenta has been linked to lower postpartum oxytocin concentration, impaired uterine involution, and dystocia. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of early manual removal of placenta immediately postpartum on subsequent fertility parameters (development of free intrauterine fluid, inflammatory status of endometrium, and on pregnancy rates) and to compare them with mares with spontaneous expulsion of placenta. A total of 29 mares, mainly Irish draught, were closely monitored during foaling by closed circuit television and allocated to two groups: (1) mares that expelled the placenta spontaneously within 3 hours of foaling; and (2) mares that were cleansed manually immediately after foal delivery. All mares were examined and scanned 5 and 9 days postpartum, and free intrauterine fluid was recorded; endometrial swabs were taken 9 days postpartum for endometrial cytology and culture. None of the fertility parameters analyzed showed statistical difference between groups 1 and 2. Therefore, it can be concluded that early manual removal of placenta has no detrimental effects on subsequent fertility of mares and, therefore, can be recommended when a veterinarian attends a foaling.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine whether prepartum vaccination of mares would enhance passive transfer of West Nile virus (WNV)-specific antibodies and to characterize the pattern of decline for maternally derived WNV antibodies in foals. Seventeen light horse mares were allocated to WNV or control treatments. At 30 days before expected foaling, mares were vaccinated for encephalomyelitis, tetanus, herpesvirus, and influenza. At this time, WNV mares were vaccinated with a killed WNV vaccine. Blood samples were taken from mares 30 days before expected foaling, from mares and foals within 24 hours of foaling (0 days), and from foals at 7, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 days of age as well as 30 days after an initial (PV1) and subsequent (PV2) WNV vaccination. Serum was analyzed for titer to WNV and total immunoglobulin G (IgG). Although WNV titer did not change over time in control mares, an increase (P < .05) was observed in WNV titer for WNV mares vaccinated 30 days before expected foaling. Foals of WNV dams had greater (P < .05) WNV titers than foals of control dams. Mean WNV titers of all foals increased from 0 to 7 days and declined through 180 days of age. Total IgG of foals increased from days 0 to 7, declined from days 30 to 120, and increased from days 150 through PV2. These results suggest that vaccination of mares for WNV in late gestation has a beneficial effect on foal WNV titer.  相似文献

Alfaprostal (K 11941), a novel prostaglandin F2 alpha analogue was clinically tested in 24 dioestrous mares, 40 anoestrous mares and 31 postpartum mares, all being given 2 or 3 mg intramuscularly. Blood samples were taken for the determination of plasma progesterone levels and the objective confirmation of luteolytic drug effects. Two hundred and thirty-six mares at the same location were used for comparisons of the rates of pregnancy, early embryonic loss and foaling. Alfaprostol was found to act as a potent luteolytic agent with good oestrus induction, follicular development and normal conception (72.6%) and foaling rate (65.3%). No side effects were observed. Treatments commenced early in the season (October), when only 35% of the anoestrous mares showed elevated progesterone levels, but in 80% of anoestrous mares with baseline progesterone levels, alfaprostol initiated heat and ovulation followed by normal fertility.  相似文献

Objective To evaluate the fertility of mares bred at various intervals relative to surgical management of rectovaginal fistula (RVF). Materials and Methods Surgical repair of RVF was performed in 28 mares at variable times relative to foaling (30 days to 24 months) and also relative to rebreeding (same cycle or delayed). Postoperative fertility was then evaluated. Results Two mares were already pregnant at the time of surgery and 20 of 23 mares (87%) that were bred immediately prior to or following surgery conceived from their first service. When mares were bred in the same cycle as surgery, the next cycle following surgery or in the following breeding season after surgery the pregnancy rate was 5/5, 5/6 and 10/12, respectively, and the foaling rates were 4/5, 4/6 and 7/12. The two mares already pregnant at the time of surgery foaled successfully. Conclusions Excellent fertility can be achieved following surgical repair of RVF and our results suggest that delaying breeding until the following breeding season is not necessary. In addition, breeding in the same cycle as the surgical repair is a previously unreported technique that should be considered to maintain normal fertility and a yearly foaling interval.  相似文献

The case records of 19 mares undergoing caudal ventral midline celiotomy for cesarean section were reviewed. Surgical exposure to the uterus was good, and the incisions healed by first intention in surviving mares. Seventeen mares (89%) survived to time of hospital discharge. Six foals (32%) were delivered alive, of which three were euthanatized because of severe deformity (1 died on day 6 and 2 survived to time of discharge). The most frequent postoperative complications were abdominal pain (13 mares), anemia (10 mares), and retained placenta (6 mares). Sixteen mares were bred during at least one season after the cesarean section and eight (50%) produced at least one foal. The collective foaling rate for these mares, bred a total of 25 seasons, was 36%. Only one mare bred during the same year as the surgery produced a live foal. The collective foaling rate for mares bred after the year of the surgery was 50%.  相似文献

The results of a study on endometrial biopsies obtained from 700 infertile mares are reported. Infiltrative endometritis was present in 51% consisting of a combination of an acute and chronic cellular response in 6%, mild chronic infiltrations in 35% and moderate to severe chronic infiltrations in 10%.

Demonstrable endometrial fibrosis was found in 88% of the mares with the majority having mild (51%) or moderate (35%) changes. The age of the mares and the average number of years barren gradually increased with the severity of endometrial fibrosis, as did the combined incidence of fetal loss (early embryonic death and abortion) during the three year period preceding the biopsy.

A significant decrease in foaling percentage for the year following the biopsy was observed with increasing severity of endometrial fibrosis. Chisquare analysis projected a decrease in foaling rate of 22.8% for each category increase in severity.

The number of years barren and the farm management system used also had a significant effect on foaling probability. The foaling rates for mares that were bred artificially (82%) under strict veterinary supervision using an extender incorporating gentamicin were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than for mares bred in a conventional manner under average management conditions (48%).

It was concluded that endometrial biopsy is a valuable diagnostic and prognostic technique. When the degree of fibrosis is used to predict foaling probability, the number of years barren and the breeding method to be used should also be considered to arrive at a more accurate prediction.

Objective To evaluate the surgical results and fertility of mares bred at various intervals relative to surgical management of urovagina. Design Sixty-one mares underwent surgery to correct vesicovaginal reflux. Surgery was performed at varying times relative to breeding and postoperative fertility was evaluated. Results Five mares were lost to follow-up and a further four were electively not bred. Of the remaining 52 mares, seasonal pregnancy and live foaling rates were 67% (35/52) and 54% (26/48), respectively. When mares were bred in the same cycle as the surgery, the first cycle following surgery, the second cycle following surgery or the following breeding season after surgery the seasonal pregnancy rates were 89% (8/9), 63% (10/16), 67% (2/3) and 63% (15/24), respectively. After censoring four mares that died of natural causes pre-foaling, the foaling rates were 88% (7/8), 50% (7/14), 0% (0/3), 52% (12/23), respectively. All mares bred in the same cycle as surgery or in the next cycle were bred once only that season, so the pregnancy rate per cycle of 72% (18/25) was identical to the seasonal pregnancy rate. Conclusions Good fertility (comparable to a normal population of mares) was achieved following surgery and the results suggest that delaying breeding until the following breeding season is not necessary. In addition, breeding in the same cycle as surgical repair is a previously unreported technique that should be considered to maintain a yearly foaling interval.  相似文献

Postpartum metritis is a common problem in many animal species. In equine medicine, sequelae of postpartum metritis vary from delay in uterine involution to development of systemic acute metritis (SAM), toxemia, and laminitis. Heavy draft mares potentially have higher risk of suffering from SAM than light breed mares. Postpartum fever (PF) mostly appears as a sign of SAM. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the incidence of PF in 158 foalings from 62 heavy draft mares by multiple logistic regressions. The objective variable was the incidence of PF, and the explanatory variables were year foaled, month foaled, age of mare, breed of mare (crossbred heavy draft horse vs. Percheron), gestation length, foaling difficulty (easy delivery vs. dystocia), retained fetal membranes, stillbirth, and sex of offspring. Twenty-four out of 158 mares were diagnosed with PF. Stepwise regression analysis showed that breed of dams and foaling difficulty were significant risk factors for PF. Percheron mares had higher risk than crossbred mares (odds ratio: 3.4). Dystocia had higher risk than easy delivery (odds ratio: 3.3). Percheron mares had higher incidence of PF than crossbred mares even in the cases of easy delivery. Risks for damage and contamination of birth canal will be increased especially if the fetal delivery needs assistance. The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to consider the foaling difficulty and the breed of dams for earlier detection of PF in peripartum heavy draft mares.  相似文献

Cortisol is involved in the initiation of parturition and we hypothesized that increased maternal cortisol release advances the onset of foaling. Transport is a stressor for horses and induces an increase in cortisol release. To determine stress effects on the time of foaling, late-pregnant mares were transported by road for 3 hours (n = 12) or remained in their stable as controls (n = 4). Starting on day 325 of gestation, saliva and blood samples were taken for cortisol and progestin analysis, respectively. Fetomaternal electrocardiograms were recorded repeatedly. Mares were checked for impending parturition and changes in precolostrum pH. When pH decreased to 6.5, mares were either transported or left untreated. After birth, saliva was collected repeatedly from mares and their foals and heart rate (HR) was recorded. Foals were checked for maturity and health. Gestation length was 337 ± 2 days in stressed and 336 ± 2 days in control mares. Cortisol concentration increased from 3.3 ± 0.9 to 8.4 ± 0.8 ng/mL in transported mares (P < .001) and remained constant in controls. Maternal HR and heart rate variability (HRV) did not differ between groups and neither fetal HR nor HRV changed in response to transport. In transported mares, time from precolostrum decrease to parturition was shorter (40 ± 10 hours) than the respective time in controls (134 ± 49 hours, P < .01). Neither duration of foaling nor times to first standing and suckling of foals or the postnatum increase in HR and decrease in HRV differed between groups. In conclusion, transport-induced maternal cortisol release may have advanced the onset of foaling.  相似文献

Blastic transformation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and serum neutralization antibody levels for equine herpesivurs type 1 were measured in 19 mares from three farms at the time of termination of their pregnancy by normal foaling or viral abortion. The stimulation indexes of lymphocytes obtained from the mares from two farms (Farm 1 and 2) which had virus abortions, ranged from 2.1 to 10.8. But there was no significant difference in stimulation index levels between the aborting and normal foaling mares on these two farms. Equine herpesvirus type 1 was isolated from the mononuclear cells of one mare (No. 5) about two months after she aborted. The stimulation index of lymphocytes from that mare was not significantly different from that of other mares on these farms. Stimulation index of lymphocytes from the mares on one farm (Farm 3) where there was no virus abortion or previous history of virus abortion but were exposed to virus antigen from vaccination, ranged from 1.6 to 2.9. The serum neutralization antibody levels were low in most mares ranging from 1/4 to 1/20 and in three mares these were higher. There was no direct correlation between the levels of serum neutralization antibody and stimulation index of lymphocytes from the mares on these farms.  相似文献
