We studied the effect of six tree species planted at six different densities on pasture production seven years after establishment. Annual and seasonal pasture production was studied every six months, over three years. Pasture production was lower under conifer trees (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, Pinus pinaster Aiton, Pinus radiata D. Don) than under broadleaved trees (Betula alba L., Quercus rubra L. and Castanea sativa Mill.). Annual pasture production under Pseudotsuga menziesii and Pinus pinaster decreased progressively starting from 952 trees ha−1, while decline in herbage production under Pinus radiata began to occur at 427 trees ha−1. Tree density effect on pasture production was detected at 2,000 trees ha−1 for all of the deciduous species studied. This effect on pasture production was more important in the first six months of the year (June sampling), while from June to December herbage production was less affected by tree density. The tree effect became more noticeable over time, with the last sampling showing the inverse relationship between tree density and herbage production most clearly. Seven years after tree establishment, pasture production was quite consistent under tree densities between 190 trees ha−1 and 556 trees ha−1 and declined remarkably from 556 trees ha−1 to 2,500 trees ha−1. The study also indicated that by the sixth growing season, annual pasture production under different tree species is inversely correlated with tree leaf area index.  相似文献

The management of deer impacts on forested lands requires quantification of the negative factors(e.g.,bark stripping) on tree survival in relation to other ecological variables(e.g.,competition from neighboring trees). This study measured the effects of bark stripping by sika deer,Cervus nippon, and competition among trees on the survival of Abies veitchii in a subalpine coniferous forest in central Japan over 12 years. Most of the trees subjected to bark stripping by deer were small(10 cm in diameter at breast height);however, some trees were stripped repeatedly.Although light bark stripping did not strongly influence tree survival after 12 years, heavily stripped stems(i.e., 65% of the stem circumference stripped) were severely affected. The effect on longevity for each tree after bark stripping was explained by maximum bark stripping intensity during the study period, rather than initial bark stripping intensity. When 85% of the stem circumference had been stripped, survival rates decreased.Bark stripping influenced survival rates much more than competition from neighboring trees.Because bark stripping occurred repeatedly, frequent measurements are important to grasp the full effects caused by this action.Heavy bark stripping of a stem enhances tree mortality. Thus, management of bark stripping is an essential element of stand maintenance and species composition in subalpine coniferous forests in Japan.  相似文献

On a Vertisol under 850 mm rainfall, at an altitude of 1850 m, Faidherbia albida trees that occurred at 6.52 trees ha–1, with a canopy cover that range from 97 m2 ha–1 to 229 m2 ha–1 were recorded. Studies on the lateral and vertical influence of the tree canopy on some physical and chemical properties of the soil, show apparent higher organic matter on the West side of the tree than the East due to accumulated wind blown litter by prevalent wind direction, and organic matter, N, P and K levels were higher under the tree canopy than outside for all directions and depths studied. Soil pH, exchangeable Na, Ca and Mg under the canopy and outside were similar. Available water capacity was 1.5 to 2 times more under than outside the tree. Noticeable increases in the silt fraction under the tree was recorded and discussed in relation to soil condition improvement and plant growth.  相似文献

Studies on tree crop interaction under rainfed condition in Dehradun valley were conducted for 13 years during 1977 to 1990. Grewia optiva (Bhimal), Morus alba (Mulbery) and Eucalyptus hybrid were tried along with rice (CV: Akashi) — wheat (CV: RR-21) rotation. One-year-old tree seedlings of the above tree species were planted in line, 5 m apart in N-S direction, in July 1977, in the middle of the plot (size 20 m × 20 m). Eucalyptus was first harvested in 1987. Grewia optiva, Morus alba and coppice of Eucalyptus were harvested in 1990. All tree species had depressing effect on crop yields. Eucalyptus had maximum effect in depressing crop yield till the first harvest and had least effect thereafter. From 1987 onwards, Morus alba affected rice most, while wheat was mostly affected by Grewia optiva. The depressing effect on an average varied from 28 to 34% depending upon the species.Distance of tree line from the crop significantly affected the crop yield upto a distance of 5 m and there was 39% decrease in crop yield upto 1 m, 33% from 1–2 m, 25% from 2–3 m and 12% from 3–5 m distance. Annual removal of lops and tops from trees partly compensated the deficit. Grewia optiva could produce 1.08 t ha–1 yr–1 of branches and 0.26 t ha–1 yr–1 of leaves (air dry) and 1.28 t ha–1 yr–1 of branches and 0.28 t ha–1 yr–1 of leaves were obtained from Morus alba. Wood (ADT) produced by the trees was 33.6 t ha–1 from Eucalyptus, 9.5 t ha–1 from Grewia optiva and 11.6 t ha–1 from Morus alba.  相似文献

This long term experiment provides production data for evaluation of combined forestry and livestock systems. Five systems were established in Pinus radiata planted in 1981 (620 mm average annual rainfall). Sheep were introduced in 1984 and trees were pruned in several lifts. Adjusted tree stockings were (1) 60 widely spaced trees ha−1, (2) 200 widely spaced trees ha−1, (3) 200 trees ha−1 in five-row belts, (4) 1,090 trees ha−1 (unpruned) and 815 trees ha−1, and (5) no trees (open pasture). Tree growth, wool production, liveweight gain and pasture production were measured. At year 25, tree diameter under bark at 1.3 m (DBHUB) in Systems 1, 2, 3 and 4 (unpruned) was 46.0, 39.2, 33.5 and 24.1 cm, while volume of bark-free 6-m butt-logs was 49, 117, 86 and 233 m3 ha−1. Inner rows of System 3 belts contained smaller trees than outer rows. Pruned System 4 trees had slightly greater diameter than unpruned trees. Pasture production declined with tree stocking and time, due to shading and competition. Wool production (WP ha−1) and liveweight gain (LWG ha−1) declined linearly from year 9 to 17 with increasing disparity among systems. In 1998 (year 17) WP ha−1 in Systems 1, 2 and 3 was 64, 16 and 43% of that in open pasture. Further analysis is needed to evaluate the financial costs and returns of various systems under particular rotation lengths and market prices.  相似文献

The effects of thinning and refertilization on growth of Pinus radiata in three experiments planted at 11 960 stems ha–1 were examined. Responses to thinning and refertilization were obtained at 3 or 5 years after planting despite heavy applications of fertilizer at establishment. During the 3 years following retreatment, trees which had been thinned to 2990 stems ha–1 had twice the sectional area increments of unthinned trees, while up to a 3-fold increase in increment was obtained on trees which had been thinned and refertilized. Responses to nitrogen were obtained in all experiments. Response to phosphate was dependent upon soil type and prior treatment. Foliar analyses do not appear to be reliable for predicting responses to fertilization applied in combination with thinning.  相似文献

Silvopastoral systems in Europe offer the potential of introducing environmental benefits while at the same time increasing the diversity of farm outputs. The establishment of new silvopastoral systems by planting young trees into existing pasture was investigated at a site in North Wales, UK. Two tree species, sycamore (Acer pseudo-platanus L.) and red alder(Alnus rubra Bong.), were planted into pasture at a range of densities and planting arrangements. Growth of trees planted in farm woodland blocks (2500 stems ha–1) was compared with the growth of trees planted at 400 stems ha–1 in clumps and dispersed throughout the plot and at 100 stems ha–1 (dispersed). Over the first six years after planting, alder trees were significantly taller and larger in diameter than sycamore. Sycamore trees planted at close spacing in farm woodland or clumped arrangements were significantly larger in diameter than widely spaced sycamore at 100 and 400 stems ha–1. Livestock productivity was unaffected by the presence of trees during the six-year establishment phase of the system. The planting of trees in a clumped pattern appears to combine silvicultural benefits to tree growth with agricultural benefits of maintaining livestock production while trees are established. This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The use of municipal sewage sludge as a fertiliser could be a more adequate means of disposal of this residue than its transport to the dump. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of different doses of sludge and sowing a mixture of cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata) and clover (Trifolium repens) on pasture production, botanical composition of the pasture, forage quality, and changes in soil chemical properties. Treatments applied were: (1) no fertilisation (L0), (2) fertilisation with 26 Mg ha–1 of sewage sludge with no sowing (L40), (3) fertilisation with 26 Mg ha–1 of sewage sludge and sowing with 25 kg of Dactylis glomerata L. cv Artabro (Dg) and 3 kg Trifolium repens cv Huia per hectare and (4) 52 Mg ha–1 of sewage sludge with no herbage sowing (L80). Plots were established in a silvopastoral system with Pinus radiata D. Don at a density of 1666 trees ha–1 (3 × 2 m). The improvement of soil fertility due to organic fertiliser application and the use of Dactylis glomerata increased the production and quality of pasture as well as reduced the risk of fire and erosion, as grasses dominated shrubs. Fertilisation with sewage sludge in soils of acid origin increased the concentration of copper in the pasture and, if cocksfoot was not sown, the levels of this element exceeded the maximum tolerable dietary levels for sheep. On the other hand, fertilisation also increased the levels of zinc in pasture, but values were not above toxic limits for sheep, horses and cattle. This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In recent years, in the European Union, sewage sludge production has been increased as a result of EU policy (European directive 91/271/EEC). Organic matter and nutrient sewage sludge contents, principally nitrogen, indicate it can be used as fertilizer. The objective of the experiment was to compare the effect of no fertilization, three doses of sewage sludge, with or without liming, and the fertilization usually used in the region applied over a period of 3 years on pasture production and tree growth in a silvopastoral system. The experiment was conducted in the northwest of Spain. The soil was very acid (soil pH = 4.5) and had very low nutrient levels, especially P, that is related to site index. It was sown with a grass mixture (25 kg ha−1 of Lolium perenne L. 10 kg ha−1 of Dactylis glomerata L. and 4 kg ha−1 of Trifolium repens L.) in Autumn 1997 under a plantation of 5-year-old Pinus radiata D. Don at a density of 1,667 trees ha−1. Liming and sewage sludge fertilization increased soil pH and reduced saturated aluminium percentage in the interchange complex (Al/IC) in the soil, coming up the effect before with liming. Medium and high sewage sludge doses increased pasture production in the two first years. In a silvopastoral system, positive tree growth response to different fertilization treatments depended on tree age, initial soil fertility, soil pH, the relationship of competition with pasture production and previous liming application.  相似文献

A study of an agrisilviculture system comprising Gmelina arborea and soybean (Glycine max) was conducted in the subhumid region of Central India. Above- and below-ground biomass production and distribution of coarse and fine roots were studied in 4-year-old G. arborea, planted at a spacing of 2 × 2 m, 2 × 3 m, 2 × 4 m and 2 × 5 m. The total biomass varied from 10.89 Mg ha–1 to 3.65 Mg ha–1 depending on the tree density. Among the different tree components, stemwood contributed maximum biomass (54.3–79.4%), followed by branches and leaves. Root distribution pattern showed that most of the coarse roots were distributed in the top 40 cm of soil, whereas fine roots were concentrated in the top 20 cm. Coarse root biomass decreased with an increase in spacing. The spread of roots was asymmetrical in trees planted at 2 × 2 m and 2 × 3 m spacings, while it was symmetrical in trees planted at wide spacings. No significant difference was observed in the fine root biomass in different stands. The root:shoot ratio increased with an increase in spacing. Crop (soybean) growth and productivity varied significantly and it increased with a decrease in tree density. Soybean yield varied between 1.5 Mg ha–1 to 2.1 Mg ha–1. The role of root architecture of G. arborea trees on productivity of crops under agri-silviculture system is discussed.  相似文献

Infestations of Essigella californica following the installation of post-thinning fertilizer trials in Pinus radiata plantations provided an opportunity to examine the impact of repeated defoliation over a period of 8 years (1997–2005). Replicated treatments (n = 4) of nil fertilizer (control), N (300 kg ha−1) as urea, P (80 kg ha−1) and S (45 kg ha−1) as superphosphates were applied immediately after thinning at three sites and this was followed by a second application of NPS fertilizers 6 years later with N applied at 300 kg ha−1 as urea and ammonium sulphate and P at 80 or 120 kg ha−1. Defoliation of untreated P. radiata gradually increased to 50% over a period of 8 years. Basal area growth was negatively correlated with average defoliation for two consecutive post-fertilizer periods of 6 and 2 years. Growth responses to fertilizer varied considerably between sites but the largest improvement in growth was due to NPS fertilizer, this increased basal area by 30–80%. Application of N fertilizer raised total N levels in foliage and increased defoliation with a commensurate loss in growth under conditions of deficiencies of S or P. Repeated infestations gradually increased the percentage of trees with severe defoliation (>80% loss of foliage) indicating that nutrient-deficient trees have a reduced capacity for foliage recovery between episodes of peak infestation. In contrast, treatment with N fertilizer in combination with S- and P-corrected deficiencies of these nutrients, raised levels of total N in foliage and reduced defoliation to approximately 20%. Basal area growth responses to NPS fertilizers reflected improved nutrition as well as reduced insect damage. The reduction in defoliation under conditions of balanced tree nutrition was most likely due to enhanced needle retention following correction of P deficiency as well as greater availability of nutrients enabling a more vigorous recovery of P. radiata after an episode of E. californica activity. Treatment with fertilizer therefore reduced the long-term impact of aphid damage and improved growth of P. radiata.  相似文献

To meet their wood, fodder and fruit needs, resource-poor farmers with only small land holdings are forced to mix trees in their food crop plots. An experiment was conducted to study the effect of nine tree species planted at 312.5 trees ha–1 (4×8 m) on the yield of bananas planted at 625 stools ha–1 (4×4 m) and beans (80000 plants ha–1) as well as the wood production of the trees when intercropped. In addition, an economic analysis was done to compare the different tree/banana/bean associations. After three and one-half years, wood volume (in m3 ha–1) ofGrevillea robusta (18.1), was highest and that ofErythrina poeppigiana (2.7),Cedrela odorata (2.4) orMarkhamia lutea (0.8) was the lowest. Volume ofCedrela serrata (13.7) was not significantly different from that ofAlbizia chinensis (12.8) but was significantly higher than that ofLeucaena diversifolia (6.8),Acrocarpus fraxinifolius (6.7) orCalliandra calothyrsus (6.0).None of the tree species had a significant influence on the yields of the bananas and none affected the yield of the bean crops until the seventh cropping season, three years after the trees were planted. In that year, Grevillea reduced bean yield by 29%, Albizia by 34% and Leucaena by 36%. From the economic analyses, all the treatments except Leucaena and Markhamia had positive net benefits relative to the control (banana/bean) but the results were highly variable.C. serrata was found to be the best tree to be intercropped in a banana/bean system.  相似文献

Predictive models were developed for Cordia alliodora branch and Theobroma cacao branch or leaf biomass, based on branch basal areas (r2 0.79) but the model of C. alliodora leaf biomass, although significant, was of very low accuracy (r2 = 0.09) due to annual leaf fall. At age 10 years, shade tree stem biomass accounted for 80% of the total above-ground biomass of either tree. However, between the ages of 6 and 10 years, the biomass increment of T. cacao branches (3–4t.ha–1.a–1) was similar to that of the shade tree stems. During the same period, the net primary productivity was 35 and 28 t.ha–1.a–1, for the Erythrina poepigiana and and C. alliodora systems, respectively.Cocoa production under either of the shade trees C. alliodora or E. poeppigiana was 1000 kg.ha–1.a–1 (oven-dry; ages 6–10 yr). During the same period, C. alliodora timber production was 9 m3.ha–1.a–1 whilst the leguminous shade tree E. poeppigiana does not produce timber. Litterfall over the same 5 years, including crop and/or shade tree pruning residues, averages 11 and 23 t.ha–1.a–1, respectively. The main difference was due to E. poeppigiana pruning residues (10t.ha–1.a–1).Soil organic material reserves (0–45 cm) increased over 10 years from 198 to 240 t.ha–1 in the E. poeppigiana plots and from 168–184 t.ha–1 in the C. alliodora plots. These values, together with the productivity indices presented, provide evidence that the systems are sustainable. For economic reasons, the use of C. alliodora is recommended under the experimental conditions. however, on less fertile soils without fertilization, the greater biomass and hence nutrient return to the soil surface under E. poeppigiana, might make this the preferable shade tree.  相似文献

Tree bark is commonly used for traditional medicine in southern Africa and further afield. Increasing demand and commercialisation have resulted in the overexploitation of many species, posing a major challenge to forest managers to develop mechanisms for sustainable resource use. An experimental bark harvesting research project was initiated in the southern Cape, South Africa, to inform best practices for bark harvesting based on tree response to bark stripping. The species selected for the study, Ocotea bullata, Curtisia dentata and Rapanea melanophloeos, are much sought after and well represented in southern Cape forests. The treatment entailed removing vertical strips of bark, 1 m in length and of different strip widths, covering the full range of tree size classes ≥10 cm DBH. The treatments were applied during two seasons, winter and summer. Evaluations were done every six months to assess tree response to bark stripping in terms of bark regrowth through phellogen edge and sheet development, and susceptibility to insect and fungal damage. The results show a differential response of tree species in terms of phellogen edge and sheet growth, as well as susceptibility to fungal and insect attack. Rapanea melanophloeos was the most vulnerable to fungal and insect damage and displayed little bark regrowth following wounding. Curtisia dentata showed best bark regrowth through sheet development. Only O. bullata, though, showed adequate bark regrowth (through edge development) to allow for sustainable strip harvesting. Bark regrowth is influenced by season of stripping, although this is difficult to define considering the wide range of environmental and other factors affecting tree response to bark removal. Smaller trees are more vulnerable to bark stripping, especially with a wide strip, with poorer bark regrowth than bigger trees.  相似文献

Pinus radiata trees were grown on a podzolized sandy soil at a second rotation site under the following treatments: total weed control, total weed control plus ammonium nitrate, strip weed control and no weed control. During the first two summers after planting the differences in needle water potential between trees under no, strip or total weed control were very small. Despite similar rates of net N-mineralization in strip and total weed control treatments, which averaged 64 kg ha–1 yr–1 in the 0–15 cm soil depth, weeds in the strip weed control treatment reduced soil mineral-N concentrations by 50–80%, leaching of N by the end of the first growing season by 45%, foliar-N concentrations by 4–14% and stem biomass at 20 months after planting by 46%. Although N-uptake by above-ground vegetation (trees plus weeds) was 49% higher in the strip weed control treatment, the amount of N apportioned to trees during the first 20 months after planting was reduced from 15.5 to 9.0 kg ha–1. These effects of weeds were even more pronounced in the no weed control treatment. Since weeds had little effect on the needle water potential of trees and the annual rates of N-mineralization, but adversely affected N-uptake by trees, results indicate that weeds directly competed with trees for N, and thereby aggravated N-deficiency in trees. Application of ammonium nitrate after complete weed control increased foliar-N concentrations, and N-uptake and growth of trees, but also induced severe stem deformation.  相似文献

During 7 years (1979–1985) cacao harvests (beans and husks) have been recorded for the agroforestry systems ofTheobroma cacao underCordia alliodora andErythrina poeppigiana shade trees. The mean oven dry cacao yields were 626 and 712 kg.ha–1.a–1 cocoa beans underC. alliodora andE. poeppigiana respectively. Harvests have gradually increased over the years and the plantation has now reached maturity.Annual extraction of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in fruits, which is relatively small, was calculated on the basis of chemical analyses. The following average values were found (kg.ha–1.a–1): At the age of 8 years, theC. alliodora trees have reached 26.7 cm diameter (DBH) and 14.0 m in height. Mean annual growth (from age 5 to 7) is 14.6 m3.ha–1.a–1.Natural plant residue production has been measured for 4 years (Nov. 1981–Oct. 1985). UnderE. poeppigiana it has reached a value of 8.91 t.ha–1.a–1 and underC. alliodora 7.07 t.ha–1.a–1. The shade trees have contributed 57 and 47% respectively. Transference and decomposition rates are high and important in the nutrient cycles. The nutrient content of the litter was analysed and corresponding average yearly transfers were (kg.ha–1.a–1): For part I see Vol. 4, No. 3, 1986.Agroforestry Project, CATIE/GTZ (Tropical Agricultural Research and Training Center/Gesselschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit), Turrialba, Costa Rica  相似文献

Fine root dynamics of shaded cacao plantations in Costa Rica   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Root turnover may contribute a significant proportion of recycled nutrients in agroforestry systems and competition between trees and crops for nutrients and water may depend on temporal fine root regrowth patterns. Fine root biomass ( 2 mm) and fine root productivity were measured during one year in plantations of cacao (Theobroma cacao) shaded by Erythrina poeppigiana or Cordia alliodora planted on a deep alluvial soil in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Fine root biomass of approximately 1.0 Mg ha–1 varied little during the year with maximum values at the beginning of the rainy season of 1.85 Mg ha–1 in the cacao-C. alliodora system compared to 1.20 Mg ha–1 for cacao-E. poeppigiana. Fine root productivity of C. alliodora and E. poeppigiana (maximum of 205 and 120 kg ha–1 4 week–1, respectively) was greatest at the end of the rainy season, while for cacao it was greatest at the beginning of the rainy season (34–68 kg ha–1 4 week–1), which suggests that if nutrient competition occurs between the shade trees and the cacao, it could be minimized by early fertilization during the beginning of the rains immediately after pruning the shade trees. Annual fine root turnover was close to 1.0 in both systems. Assuming that fine root biomass in these mature plantations was constant on an annual basis, nutrient inputs from fine root turnover were estimated as 23–24 (N), 2 (P), 14–16 (K), 7–11 (Ca) and 3–10 (Mg) kg ha–1 year–1, representing 6–13% and 3–6% of total nutrient input in organic matter in the C. alliodora and E. poeppigiana systems, respectively.  相似文献

We carried out this study to clarify the relationships between the seasonal changes of bark stripping and food quality, and between bark-stripping intensity and bark nutrition with age of veitch fir (Abies veitchii) by sika deer (Cervus nippon) in the northern Mount Fuji district, from June 2000 to July 2003. We found that sika deer gnawed and ate all of the bark stripped, and a seasonal change in bark stripping occurred from December to May or June with a peak in March–April. The stripping period largely overlapped with the periods of low food availability and poor food nutrition (indicated by fecal chemical component index) of sika deer, from January to April. Both bark nutritional quality and bark-stripping intensity related to stand age and tree size of veitch fir negatively. Consequently, bark-stripping intensity related to bark nutritional quality positively. February is the worst forage period in terms of both quantity (due to deep snow) and quality (indicated by fecal chemical components). There was a time lag of 1 to 2 months in the peak of bark stripping in March–April when compared with the poor forage period in February. This time lag may suggest that sika deer need more nutritious and easily digested food from March due to increased nutrient demands that result from depleted body condition in both sexes, gestation of pregnant females, and the recovery of active metabolism.  相似文献

A hedgerow intercropping study was conducted for 7 years in West Sumatra, Indonesia on an acid and highly A1-saturated (72%) soil to determine growth and yield responses of tree hedgerows and upland rice and cowpea intercrops. Three tree species,Paraserianthes falcataria, Calliandra calothyrsus, andGliricidia sepium, and a no tree control were planted at three lime rates of zero, 375 kg ha–1, and liming to 25% Al+H saturation. Annual fertilizer inputs of 20 kg P and 50 kg K ha–1 were kept low to approximate low input farming systems. The trees were pruned 4 to 6 times per year and prunings applied to the intercrops.Paraserianthes andCalliandra grew vigorously, whileGiricidia grew poorly and was replaced after four years withFlemingia macrophylla. Hedgerow growth and yields were reported in a previous paper [Evensen et al., 1994].Rice and cowpea yields initially increased with lime andParaserianthes pruning application, but yields and soil cations (Ca, Mg, and K) declined until fertilizer inputs were increased after four years. Thereafter, crop yields increased and soil cations returned to original levels. Soil C and N were maintained over the 7 years on plots with trees. These results indicate little build-up of nutrient cations due to recycling by the trees and suggest that successful alley farming on such highly weathered soils requires maintenance of soil fertility with external inputs.  相似文献
