A trial involving 1,803 feedlot calves was conducted under commercial feedlot conditions in western Canada to compare the relative effectiveness of a new oxytetracycline formulation, administered either intramuscularly (BMI) or subcutaneously (BMS), to a currently available oxytetracycline formulation, administered intramuscularly (LAB), for the prevention of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in feedlot calves. All experimental treatments were administered upon arrival at the feedlot and again on the third day after arrival.

Over the entire feeding period, there were no significant differences (p≥0.05) in the BRD treatment rates or the BRD relapse rates between either the BMI or BMS groups compared to the LAB group. Similarly, there were no significant differences (p≥0.05) in the BRD treatment rates in the BMI or BMS groups from days 8-14, days 15-90, or days 1-90 of the feeding period compared to the LAB group. However, during the first seven days of the feeding period the BRD treatment rate in the BMI group was 1.55 times (p<0.05) higher than in the LAB group. From days 1-90 and day 1 to the end of the feeding period, the overall mortality rates, BRD mortality rates, and BRD case fatality rates were two to six times lower in the BMS and BMI groups as compared to the LAB group; however, these differences were not statistically significant (p≥0.05).

These data indicate that both the intramuscular and subcutaneous administration of a new oxytetracycline formulation are comparable to the intramuscular administration of a currently available oxytetracycline formulation when given to calves upon arrival at the feedlot.

Prophylactic tilmicosin medication of feedlot calves at arrival   总被引:6,自引:4,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
The parenteral administration of the antibiotic tilmicosin given on arrival at a feedlot was evaluated in a group of 304 steer calves. These calves were allotted to 24 pens so that there were 12 replicates of both the control and medicated groups. The treatment rate was reduced significantly during the first five days (p < 0.05) and during the first month (p < 0.01) of the feeding period in the medicated group. The average days from arrival until first treatment for respiratory disease was increased to 21 days in the medicated group compared to 9 days (p < 0.01) for the controls. The medicated group had improved average daily gain (p < 0.01) and feed efficiency (p < 0.01) over the trial period when compared to the nonmedicated animals.  相似文献

Incidence of morbidity and mortality in a feedlot were compared among 381 bull calves weaned one month apart (October 3 and November 1). The calves were 156 and 192 days old at weaning in the earlier and later weaned groups, respectively. Following an adjustment period, the calves were fed a mixed finishing diet containing 90% concentrate ad lib for 140 days in a feedlot. The rate of morbidity did not differ significantly between the two weaning groups. Sick calves in the earlier weaned group had a longer treatment period than those in the later weaned group (3.2 vs 1.4 days, p<0.05). Infections of the respiratory tract were the major cause of sickness and most of the respiratory infections occurred in the early stages of the feedlot period. The frequency of respiratory infections was higher among the earlier weaned calves compared with that in the later weaned group (p<0.01) indicating a higher susceptibility to these infections when calves were weaned at younger ages. Bloat was the second most common health problem among the bulls; however, its incidence did not differ between the two groups (p>0.05). The rate of mortality did not differ significantly between the two groups.  相似文献

A field trial of antimicrobial therapy for cases of undifferentiated bovine respiratory disease (UBRD) in beef calves was conducted at four Ontario feedlots. The primary purpose of the trial was to evaluate the efficacy of three different antimicrobials (oxytetracycline, penicillin, and trimethoprim-sulfadoxine) in the treatment of UBRD occurring within the first 28 days postarrival.

The response, relapse, and case fatality rates overall were 85.7%, 14.8%, and 1.4%, respectively, and were not significantly different among the three antimicrobials evaluated. Weight gains of calves treated with the different drugs were not statistically different over the feeding period. Calves that suffered a relapse posttreatment were first treated significantly earlier (p<0.001) in the postarrival period than those that did not relapse. Considered together, treated calves gained significantly less (p<0.05) over the first 28 days and throughout the entire feeding period than controls that were never sick. Cases of UBRD that responded to therapy and did not relapse had rates of gain that were not significantly different from the controls.

A 90-day finishing trial involving 144 feedlot heifers was conducted to compare the performance parameters and carcass characteristics of open heifers, therapeutically aborted heifers, and pregnant heifers. In the first 28 days of the trial, the aborted heifers had reduced (p < 0.05) feed intake (FI), average daily gain (ADG), and feed efficiency (FE) compared to pregnant and open heifers. Over the entire trial, on a live weight basis, the aborted group had reduced (p < 0.05) final weight, ADG, and FE compared to pregnant and open heifers. However, when the data were adjusted for total uterine weight, the aborted and open heifers had improved (p < 0.05) final weight, ADG, and FE compared to pregnant heifers. The aborted and open group had a higher (p < 0.05) carcass weight, rib eye area, dressing percentage, and cutability estimate compared to the pregnant heifers. The aborted group had lower (p < 0.05) carcass weight than the open heifers. Over the entire 90-day feeding period, there were no statistically significant differences among the groups with respect to feed intake (FI), average fat, grade fat, and carcass grades. Also, there were no significant health problems or mortality in any of the groups.

In the economic analysis, aborted heifers returned $26.41 per head more than pregnant heifers. Open heifers returned $39.94 per head more than aborted heifers, and $66.35 more than pregnant heifers. Thus, aborting feedlot heifers during the second trimester was determined to be a safe and cost effective management decision.

Two cohorts, consisting of 10,723 calves total, were identified in this prospective follow-up study to investigate whether immunization of auction market beef calves immediately upon arrival at the feedlot with a commercial Haemophilus somnus whole cell killed bacterin would reduce subsequent mortality. In addition to mortality rate, the use of incidence rate of fatal disease is introduced as an effect measure to examine vaccine efficacy in the feedlot. The Haemophilus somnus bacterin had no significant effect on the overall crude mortality rate; however, the bacterin appeared to significantly (p less than 0.05) reduce the incidence rate of fatal disease and the mortality rate during the first two months in the feedlot, when risk of fatal disease onset was highest. Once mortalities likely not associated with hemophilosis (for example, a fractured femoral neck) were removed from the analysis, steer mortality rate, but not heifer mortality rate, was reduced significantly (p less than 0.05) in the vaccinated group. The attributable percent overall for steers was 17.4%; this suggests that 17.4% of fatal respiratory disease in the unvaccinated steers could have been prevented by vaccination with the H. somnus bacterin. Heifer calves demonstrated a significantly (p less than 0.01) higher incidence rate of fatal disease during the first week than did steer calves, indicating that a different pattern of fatal disease existed for the two sexes. Use of a second vaccination two weeks after arrival did little to decrease mortality risk.  相似文献

Five field trials evaluated whether immunization of beef cattle prior to weaning, at weaning, or immediately upon arrival at the feedlot with a commercial bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) vaccine would reduce subsequent treatment for respiratory disease.

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus vaccination was associated with a significant (p<0.05) reduction in treatment rate in one of three groups of calves immunized prior to weaning (−12%) and in calves immunized upon arrival at the feedlot (−4%).

There was no significant (p>0.05) effect of the BRSV vaccine on treatment rate in calves immunized at weaning, in calves immunized upon arrival at the Saskatoon bull test station, or in yearlings immunized upon arrival at the feedlot.

Although the trend in these field trials was to a sparing effect of the BRSV vaccine, the small reduction in treatment rate may not justify the cost of the vaccination program.

The purpose of this study was to observe and quantitate changes in the claws of two groups of feedlot cattle (calves and backgrounded yearlings) fed diets that varied in energy (73.5 or 78.5% TDN) and crude protein (11, 13, 15, 16, 17, or 19%) content. At slaughter, the thickness of sole horn and the prevalence of toe and heel hemorrhages were greater in calves than in yearlings (p<0.02). Feeding the high-energy ration increased the prevalence of toe and heel hemorrhages in calves (p<0.02) and heel hemorrhages in yearlings (p<0.02). In yearlings, rotation of the distal phalanx and ridging of the dorsal wall of the claw were the most prominent pathological features. Osteopathy of the apex of the distal phalanx occurred more frequently in calves than in yearlings (p<0.01). This study suggests that intensive feeding of beef cattle before they reach 14 months of age has a deleterious effect on digital health.  相似文献

Three field trials were conducted in a large commercial feedlot in Saskatchewan to determine the prevalence of Haemophilus somnus in calves and to evaluate the efficacy of prophylactic mass medication with long-acting oxytetracycline on day 17 (1990, n = 1336), day 11 (1991, n = 4372), or day 8 (1992, n = 5632) postarrival. Hemophilosis accounted for > 40% of the mortality in feedlot calves each year. Haemophilus somnus was cultured from the blood of one febrile calf on day 1 (0.1%, n = 895), but it was not cultured from nasal swabs on day 1 or day 11 (n = 881) or from blood samples on day 11 (n = 883). Similarly, it was not cultured from nasal swabs or blood samples from sick calves first treated for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) (n = 219). Serological titers to H. somnus increased (p < 0.05) in unvaccinated calves from day 1 (Geometric mean titer = 11,846) to day 96 (Geometric mean titer = 63,712), indicating natural infection following feedlot entry. Calves that relapsed twice with BRD or died from BRD +/- hemophilosis had significantly (p < 0.06) lower titers to H. somnus on days 1 and 96 than those that did not relapse twice or die. Postarrival mass medication with long-acting oxytetracycline did not reduce (p > 0.05) the risk of hemophilosis mortality. However, it reduced (p < 0.05) the risk of BRD treatment by 14% and the risk of BRD mortality by 71%. Additional epidemiological studies of H. somnus are needed so that we can develop strategic medication and vaccination programs to reduce losses from hemophilosis.  相似文献

Prophylactic medication of feedlot calves with tilmicosin   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The parenteral administration to calves of the antibiotic tilmicosin either on arrival at a feedlot or 72 hours later was evaluated in a group of 308 steer calves. The calves were allotted to 24 pens so that there were eight replicates of the two medicated groups and eight replicates of the control group. The need for veterinary treatment was reduced significantly (P less than 0.05) during the first month of the feeding period in the two medicated groups. The medicated groups had an improved average daily weight gain (P less than 0.01) over the trial period compared with the non-medicated animals. This improved average daily gain by the medicated groups was not reduced when animals with respiratory disease were excluded from the calculations. The medicated groups also had an improved feed conversion efficiency (P less than 0.01) over the first 60 days of the feeding period compared with the non-medicated animals.  相似文献

The efficacy of a Pasteurella haemolytica vaccine (PhV) administered once to calves within 24 hours of arrival at a feedlot was tested for the ability to prevent morbidity and mortality from all bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and specifically from fibrinous pneumonia mortality. The PhV consisted of two immunizing ingredients: outer membrane proteins extracted from P. haemolytica, plus genetically attenuated leukotoxin produced by recombinant DNA technology. This double blind study was conducted at a large Saskatchewan feedlot using 2,324 high-risk calves purchased at auction markets and kept under typical commercial feedlot conditions. The trial design included four vaccine test groups: 1) PhV and a bovine herpesvirus type-1 (BHV-1) subunit vaccine comprised only of the virus glycoprotein IV (gIV); 2) PhV and a commercial modified live vaccine (MLV) containing BHV-1 and parainfluenza-3 viruses; 3) gIV alone; and 4) MLV alone. Calves were assigned to vaccine groups in a random systematic manner, individually identified, and monitored for 90 days after vaccination. The vaccines were given once, on arrival, to reflect common feedlot practice, although vaccination prior to expected risk would be more appropriate.

The PhV in combination with gIV reduced BRD morbidity by 20% (p < 0.05) compared to gIV alone and 24% (p < 0.05) compared to MLV alone, and reduced BRD mortality by 88% (p < 0.05) and fibrinous pneumonia mortality by 100% (p < 0.05) when compared to either gIV or MLV alone. Vaccination with PhV in combination with MLV significantly reduced the efficacy of the PhV in preventing BRD morbidity, BRD mortality, and fibrinous pneumonia mortality and also reduced the antibody response to P. haemolytica leukotoxin. These results suggest that the MLV interfered with the protective capacity of the PhV.

A field trial was performed to compare trimethoprim-sulfadoxine to ceftiofur sodium in the treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in feedlot calves. Five-hundred-and-fifty-five recently weaned, crossbred beef calves, with naturally occurring cases of BRD, were randomly assigned to either trimethoprim-sulfadoxine or ceftiofur sodium treatment groups. The effectiveness of the antibiotics was assessed by comparing relapse rates, three day treatment response rates, mortality rates, chronicity rates, and wastage rates. There was no statistical difference in the first or second relapse rates between the two groups. For the initial therapy, first relapses, and overall treatment episodes, a significantly greater proportion of the calves treated with ceftiofur sodium responded to three days of therapy than those treated with trimethoprim-sulfadoxine (p < 0.05). This resulted in a 10% reduction in treatment costs for calves in the ceftiofur group. There were significantly lower mortality and wastage rates attributable to BRD in the ceftiofur sodium group than in the trimethoprim-sulfadoxine group (p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in overall mortality, overall chronicity, or overall wastage rates between the treatment groups.  相似文献

In an experiment with 12 calves, Aquacycline® in a 5 % (OTC-A5) and a 10 % (OTC-A10) solution, was compared with Terramycin®-100 (OTC-C) by injecting 20 mg OTC/kg bwt. of these preparations in the dewlap and monitoring serum concentrations as well as tissue reactions and residues at the site of injection. All 3 preparations resulted in oxytetracycline (OTC) serum concentrations above 0.5 µg/ml of approximately 60 h. During this period, OTC-A5 resulted in a 39 % and OTC-A10 in a 20 % larger area under the serum concentration-time curve, as compared to OTC-C (P < 0.05). The recorded tissue reaction in the form of swelling during the first week following injection of OTC-A5 averaged 72 % of that after OTC-C (P < 0.01), while the mean swelling after OTC-A10 was 81 % of the corresponding value after OTC-C (P < 0.05). The OTC residue levels at the sites of injection were lower after OTC-A5, but none of the preparations resulted in OTC residues exceeding 0.3 mg at 28 days and about 0.15 mg at 42 days after injection. The pathological changes at the site of injection were somewhat more pronounced in those calves which received OTC-C. Accordingly, these results give some support to the claims that Aquacycline® offers advantages with respect to absorption characteristics and tissue tolerance.  相似文献

Hemophilosis was the most significant cause of mortality in fall-placed calves in a large feedlot in Saskatchewan, despite routine single immunization of calves with a commercial Haemophilus somnus bacterin on arrival. Common manifestations of fatal H. somnus infection were myocarditis and pleuritis; occasionally, thrombotic meningoencephalomyelitis (TME), peracute septicemia, and pneumonia were observed. Circumstantial evidence suggested that H. somnus may be a pathogen in polyarthritis. Death from pneumonia mainly occurred during the first five weeks in the feedlot. Death from myocarditis, pleuritis, TME, and septicemia, and euthanasia because of polyarthritis, occurred mainly after the third week in the feedlot.

The median fatal disease onset (FDO) for pneumonia was day 12; for septicemia, day 17; for polyarthritis, day 18; for myocarditis and pleuritis, day 22; and for TME, day 29. Calves that died from myocarditis frequently were found dead in their “home” pen; however, 88% of these animals had been treated previously. Fifty-seven percent of the calves that died from pleuritis were never treated, and those that died from TME or septicemia were either never treated or died shortly after initial treatment.

A preconditioning (PC) program that involved preweaning vaccination and preshipment weaning was evaluated utilizing 600 calves produced on four South Dakota ranches. Nonpreconditioned (NPC) controls were herd mates that were maintained with their dams during the preconditioning process. All calves were shipped from the ranch to the feedlot on the same date. In Exp. I, PC caused lower (P less than .001) preshipment gains. However, management x ranch and management x year effects indicated that response to PC was variable. Preconditioning reduced (P less than .001) transit shrink in Exp. I but caused greater (P less than .05) shrink in Exp. II. Ranch and management x ranch effects accounted for more of the variation in shrink than PC did. In the feedlot, PC calves consumed more feed initially (d 1 to 28; P less than .001) and during the entire (P less than .10) feeding period when fed to slaughter condition. During the 28-d postshipment period, calves fed higher-grain diets consumed more feed (P less than .001) and were less efficient (P less than .001) than calves fed corn silage. When fed for longer periods (greater than 28 d), higher-energy diets improved feedlot gains and feed efficiency independent of preconditioning. Health and performance responses to this preconditioning procedure were variable. Our preconditioning procedure did not improve beef production efficiency.  相似文献

Three 21-d trials were conducted at a commercial feedlot near Wellton, Arizona to determine the effects of metaphylactic injectable antibiotics on feeding and watering behavior and on animal health and growth performance of feedlot calves. Newly received male calves (n = 150, 150, and 148 for Trials 1, 2, and 3, respectively) were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: 1) no injectable antibiotic (control), 2) tilmicosin (TIL) subcutaneously (s.c.) 3) florfenicol i.m. (FIM), or 4) florfenicol s.c. (FSC). Throughout the 21-d trials, calves were observed and documented as morbid or healthy. Daily feeding and watering behaviors were collected for trials 2 and 3. A smaller (P=0.001) percentage of TIL, FIM, and FSC calves were identified as morbid (average, 27%) compared with control calves (47%), and ADG was greater (P=0.04) for TIL, FIM, and FSC calves (average, 0.42 kg/d) than for control calves (0.23 kg/d). Calves castrated before arrival had greater (P=0.001) ADG (0.53 vs 0.21 kg/d) and lower (P=0.05) mortality (0 vs 3.5%) during the first 21 d than did calves castrated upon arrival at the feedlot. Calves that remained healthy had greater (P=0.001) ADG than did calves that became morbid (0.78 vs−0.03 kg/d). Calves treated with TIL, FIM, or FSC had increased (P=0.02) feeding bouts per day in Trial 3 compared with control calves (average, 11 vs 9 bouts/d). Total feeding time was increased (P=0.005) for FIM calves compared with control, TIL, and FSC calves in Trial 3. No differences (P>0.10) were observed in watering behavior because of antibiotic treatment. Metaphylactic injectable antibiotics administered upon calves’ arrival at the feedlot did not reduce the total time newly received feedlot calves spent feeding, decreased the incidence of morbidity by 43%, and improved growth performance during the 21-d receiving period.  相似文献

Outbreaks of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) have recently been observed in vaccinated feedlot calves in Alberta a few months post-arrival. To investigate the cause of these outbreaks, lung and tracheal tissues were collected from calves that died of IBR during a post-arrival outbreak of disease. Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1), the causative agent of IBR, was isolated from 6 out of 15 tissues. Of these 6 isolates, 5 failed to react with a monoclonal antibody specific for one of the epitopes on glycoprotein D, one of the most important antigens of BHV-1. The ability of one of these mutant BHV-1 isolates to cause disease in calves vaccinated with a modified-live IBR vaccine was assessed in an experimental challenge study. After one vaccination, the majority of the calves developed humoral and cellular immune responses. Secondary vaccination resulted in a substantially enhanced level of immunity in all animals. Three months after the second vaccination, calves were either challenged with one of the mutant isolates or with a conventional challenge strain of BHV-1. Regardless of the type of virus used for challenge, vaccinated calves experienced significantly (P < 0.05) less weight loss and temperature rises, had lower nasal scores, and shed less virus than non-vaccinated animals. The only statistically significant (P < 0.05) difference between the 2 challenge viruses was the amount of virus shed, which was higher in non-vaccinated calves challenged with the mutant virus than in those challenged with the conventional virus. These data show that calves vaccinated with a modified-live IBR vaccine are protected from challenge with either the mutant or the conventional virus.  相似文献

A total of 58,885 spring-born calves entering a large commercial feedlot in southwestern Alberta were studied to examine the associations between shipping fever mortality and the pattern of calf sales at the auction markets, time of year, and weather. The observational study followed calves purchased from 42 auction markets in the 4 western provinces between September 1 and December 31 in each of the years from 1985 to 1988. Calf sales at the auction markets consistently peaked during the last week of October and the first week of November. Calves entering the feedlot in November had a risk of fatal shipping fever 2 to 8 times greater than calves entering in September or December. The pattern was the same for all 4 years, with maximum risk occurring 2 to 4 weeks after the peak time for calf sales at the markets. A number of factors could have contributed to this pattern, including changes in transport truck availability, changes in the density of calves at the markets, changes in population dynamics at the feedlot that affected feedlot crew efficiency, and weather. The finding that the risk of fatal shipping fever appears to increase significantly as the feedlot fills with calves in the fall deserves the attention of feedlot owners, so they can design their treatment strategies appropriately, and of researchers, who may gain useful knowledge about the natural history of the disease by investigating why this change in risk occurs.  相似文献

The acute phase response as indicated by serum haptoglobin and total haemolytic complement activity (CH50) was measured in 72 cross-bred steer calves purchased at sales in Ontario. During the 28 day (d) trial, 18 steers were randomly assigned to each of the following groups: 1) control; 2) vaccinated (Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis, Parainfluenza-3, Bovine Viral Diarrhea, Bovine Respiratory Synctial Virus vaccine plus Pasteurella haemolytica vaccine); 3) supplemental chelated Cr (0.14 mg/kg); and 4) Cr plus vaccines. Haptoglobin concentrations were low at arrival, increased (P < 0.05) on day 7, and returned to near initial levels (P > 0.05) by day 14. Supplemental Cr reduced (P < 0.05) haptoglobin on day 7 when morbidity was highest. Following antibiotic treatment for respiratory disease haptoglobin was lower (P < 0.05) than during morbidity; however, during morbidity, haptoglobin concentrations were not greater in sick calves (P > 0.05) than in healthy calves. Complement activity was lowest on day 7 (P < 0.05) and peaked on day 14 (P < 0.05). Complement activity tended to be lower on day 7 for vaccine, Cr, and Cr+ vaccine groups; however, the difference from controls was not significant (P > 0.10). Complement activity did not increase on day 14 (P > 0.05) with Cr supplementation as in other treatments. Morbid calves had lower (P < 0.05) CH50 activity than healthy calves on day 14. Following antibiotic treatment, the Cr-supplemented group had higher (P < 0.05) CH50 than during morbidity. In general, chromium supplementation reduced the acute phase response in newly arrived feeder calves.  相似文献

Effects of milk replacer composition and intake on the growth of orphan foals were evaluated. Twenty foals were assigned to four treatments: 1) mare-nursed, 2) commercial foal milk replacer at recommended intakes (standard), 3) commercial foal milk replacer at high intakes (high), and 4) acidified replacer at recommended intakes (acidified). Foals fed milk replacer diets were weaned at 12-24 hours postpartum and fed milk replacer for 50 days. Mare-nursed foals were weaned between 52 and 56 days of age. Foals fed replacer diets gained 12% to 28% less weight than mare-nursed foals up to two weeks of age. However, by four months of age, weights of replacer-fed foals were similar to those of mare-nursed foals and 32 other mare-nursed foals at the farm weaned between three and four months postparium. Foals drank 10 to 12 L/100 kg body weight (BW) in fluid replacer daily over the trial period. During the first week, high intake foals consumed 26% more replacer (p<0.05) than foals fed acidified or standard diets. This higher intake resulted in diarrhea earlier (6-11 days vs 11-22 days) and for a longer time (6.3 days vs 2.5-3.6 days) than in foals fed recommended amounts. Mare-nursed foals developed “foal heat scours” in the second week postpartum. After the first week, foals fed high replacer diet voluntarily consumed the same volume of fluid replacer as foals fed the standard intake. Foals ate less than 1 kg grain mix/100 kg BW daily to one month of age, then increased intake to 1.5-2 kg/ 100 kg BW to weaning. Water intake was 20-40% of daily fluid intake and was correlated (r = 0.85) to dry matter intake. Foals in the high intake group ate less (p<0.05) solid feed and drank less water than foals fed the standard and acidified diets. The foal's stomach capacity appears to limit meal size and thus replacer intake. If recommended feeding intervals are used, replacer intakes by foals are less than 15% BW daily. High volume intakes appeared to prolong diarrhea. Normal growth rates occur when replacer and good-quality feeds are fed concurrently.  相似文献
