Ventricular parasystole in a dog and a cat

In human beings, ventricular parasystole usually is a benign arrhythmia with an ectopic focus that fires independently from the rest of the heart. The specific electrocardiographic criteria used to diagnose this condition are variable coupling intervals with the preceding beat; interectopic intervals, all multiple of the same number; and fusion beats. Ventricular premature beats having those characteristics were identified in a dog and a cat, both free of detectable, structural heart disease. In these cases, the arrhythmia was refractory to treatment, but the animals were clinically normal. Recognition of this kind of arrhythmia is important because it may help in avoiding unnecessary concerns and treatment.     

Capillaria hepatica in a dog and a hedgehog

A liver infection with Capillaria hepatica is described, having been found for the first time in Switzerland in a dog and a hedgehog. After a literature review of cases known among man and animals, we present our own pathological findings. Furthermore, the parasite's life cycle is discussed.     

Tarsal fractures in a heifer and a bull

Tarsal fractures were diagnosed in a heifer and a bull. In both cases, radiography confirmed intra-articular fractures, with subluxation of the fracture fragment. Sudden, nonreducible hock flexion was a clinical sign in both cases. This sign may be highly suggestive of intra-articular fracture when diagnosis must be made without radiography.     

Hypoglycaemic bradycardia and circulatory collapse in a dog and a cat

Hypoglycaemia was accompanied by sinus bradycardia and circulatory collapse in a dog and a cat. In each case, when the hypoglycaemia was corrected by intravenous infusion of a glucose solution the bradycardia and circulatory failure were soon abolished, indicating that these abnormalities were caused by the hypoglycaemia. Similar observations have been made in human patients. To the author's knowledge, this is the first report documenting hypoglycaemic bradycardia in veterinary medicine.     

Writing and publishing a paper in a veterinary journal

The aim of this article is to give a brief guide to scientific writing to encourage more clinicians to take the plunge and write up that unusual case or present the results of their experience with a new treatment or surgical technique. Its target audience is the practitioner who wishes to publish clinical material and the young academic, clinical resident or research fellow. Both groups require guidance in the early days of their publishing career.

The outer medullary (juxtacortical) zone of a normal equine adrenal gland had columnar chromaffin-positive cells arranged with their long axes perpendicular to fine vascular channels. The deeper medullary regions were composed of smaller irregularly round to polygonal chromaffin positive cells in small packets. Both cell types contained two types of membrane-bound cytoplasmic secretory granules. Osmiophilic granules with a homogeneous core, crenated membrane and narrow submembranous halo predominated in the columnar juxtacortical cells. The rounder, central medullary cells contained predominantly electron dense granules with a wide irregular electron lucent space between an eccentric core and the granule membrane. In contrast, irrespective of cell type or zone, cells from a pheochromocytoma contained only one type of granule similar to that described for the juxtacortical region of the normal equine adrenal medulla. The tumor cells could be classified into three subtypes based on density of granule packing but the granules were morphologically similar in all tumor cells.
