Biochar application can reduce global warming via carbon (C) sequestration in soils. However, there are few studies investigating its effects on greenhouse gases in rice (Oryza sativa L.) paddy fields throughout the year. In this study, a year-round field experiment was performed in rice paddy fields to investigate the effects of biochar application on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and C budget. The study was conducted on three rice paddy fields in Ehime prefecture, Japan, for 2 years. Control (Co) and biochar (B) treatments, in which 2-cm size bamboo biochar (2 Mg ha?1) was applied, were set up in the first year. CH4 and N2O emissions and heterotrophic respiration (Rh) were measured using a closed-chamber method. In the fallow season, the mean N2O emission during the experimental period was significantly lower in B (67 g N ha?1) than Co (147 g N ha?1). However, the mean CH4 emission was slightly higher in B (2.3 kg C ha?1) than Co (1.2 kg C ha?1) in fallow season. The water-filled pore space increased more during the fallow season in B than Co. In B, soil was reduced more than in Co due to increasing soil moisture, which decreased N2O and increased CH4 emissions in the fallow season. In the rice-growing season, the mean N2O emission tended to be lower in B (?104 g N ha?1) than Co (?13 g N ha?1), while mean CH4 emission was similar between B (183 kg C ha?1) and Co (173 kg C ha?1). Due to the C release from applied biochar and soil organic C in the first year, Rh in B was higher than that in Co. The net greenhouse gas emission for 2 years considering biochar C, plant residue C, CH4 and N2O emissions, and Rh was lower in B (5.53 Mg CO2eq ha?1) than Co (11.1 Mg CO2eq ha?1). Biochar application worked for C accumulation, increasing plant residue C input, and mitigating N2O emission by improving soil environmental conditions. This suggests that bamboo biochar application in paddy fields could aid in mitigating global warming.

Abstract

To assess their impacts on net global warming, total greenhouse gas emissions (mainly CO2, N2O and CH4) from agricultural production in arable land cropping systems in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, Japan, were estimated using life cycle inventory (LCI) analysis. The LCI data included CO2 emissions from on-farm and off-farm fossil fuel consumption, soil CO2 emissions induced by the decomposition of soil organic matter, direct and indirect N2O emissions from arable lands and CH4 uptake by soils, which were then aggregated in CO2-equivalents. Under plow-based conventional tillage (CT) cropping systems for winter wheat, sugar beet, adzuki bean, potato and cabbage, on-farm CO2 emissions from fuel-consuming operations such as tractor-based field operations, truck transportation and mechanical grain drying ranged from 0.424 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1 for adzuki bean to 0.826 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1 for winter wheat. Off-farm CO2 emissions resulting from the use of agricultural materials such as chemical fertilizers, biocides (pesticides and herbicides) and agricultural machines were estimated by input–output tables to range from 0.800 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1 for winter wheat to 1.724 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1 for sugar beet. Direct N2O emissions previously measured in an Andosol field of this region showed a positive correlation with N fertilizer application rates. These emissions, expressed in CO2-equivalents, ranged from 0.041 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1 for potato to 0.382 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1 for cabbage. Indirect N2O emissions resulting from N leaching and surface runoff were estimated to range from 0.069 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1 for adzuki bean to 0.381 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1 for cabbage. The rates of CH4 removal from the atmosphere by soil uptake were equivalent to only 0.020–0.042 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1. From the difference in the total soil C pools (0–20 cm depth) between 1981 and 2001, annual CO2 emissions from the CT and reduced tillage (RT) soils were estimated to be 4.91 and 3.81 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1, respectively. In total, CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions under CT cropping systems in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido amounted to 6.97, 7.62, 6.44, 6.64 and 7.49 Mg CO2 ha?1 year?1 for winter wheat, sugar beet, adzuki bean, potato and cabbage production, respectively. Overall, soil-derived CO2 emissions accounted for a large proportion (64–76%) of the total greenhouse gas emissions. This illustrates that soil management practices that enhance C sequestration in soil may be an effective means to mitigate large greenhouse gas emissions from arable land cropping systems such as those in the Tokachi region of northern Japan. Under RT cropping systems, plowing after harvesting was omitted, and total greenhouse gas emissions from winter wheat, sugar beet and adzuki bean could be reduced by 18%, 4% and 18%, respectively, mainly as a result of a lower soil organic matter decomposition rate in the RT soil and a saving on the fuels used for plowing.

ABSTRACT

Antecedent soil moisture before freezing can affect greenhouse gases (GHG) fluxes from soils during thaw, but their critical threshold values for GHG fluxes and the underlying mechanisms are still not clear. By using packed soil-core incubation experiments, we have studied nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes from a mature broadleaf and Korean pine-mixed forest soil and an adjacent white birch forest soil with nine levels of soil moisture ranging from 10 to 90% water-filled pore space (WFPS) during a 2-month freezing at ?8°C and the following 10-day thaw at 10°C. The threshold values of soil moisture ranged from 50 to 70% WFPS for CH4 uptake and from 70 to 90% WFPS for N2O and CO2 emissions from the two soils during the freeze-thaw period. Under the optimum soil moisture condition, fulvic-like compounds with high bioavailability contributed more than 60% of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the soil. Cumulative N2O emissions from forest soils during the freeze-thaw period were greatest when the concentration ratio of nitrate-N to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was 0.04 g N g?1 C. Cumulative soil CO2 emissions and CH4 uptake during the freeze-thaw period were both regulated by the interaction between soil DOC and net N mineralization. The activities of β-1,4-glucosidase and β-1,4-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, microbial biomass C and N, and the microbial biomass C-to-N ratios, were all significantly correlated to the soil N2O, CO2, and CH4 fluxes. Overall, upon a freeze-thaw period with different soil moistures, GHG fluxes from forest soils were jointly regulated by inorganic N and DOC concentrations, and related to the labile components of DOM released into the soil, which could be strictly controlled by the related microbial properties.

In an incubation experiment with flooded rice soil fertilized with different N amounts and sampled at different rice stages, the methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) production in relation to soil labile carbon (C) pools under two temperature (35°C and 45°C) and moisture (aerobic and submerged) regimes were investigated. The field treatments imposed in the wet season included unfertilized control and 40, 80 and 120 kg ha?1 N fertilization. The production of CH4 was significantly higher (27%) under submerged compared to aerobic conditions, whereas CO2 production was significantly increased under aerobic by 21% compared to submerged conditions. The average labile C pools were significantly increased by 21% at the highest dose of N (120 kg ha?1) compared to control and was found highest at rice panicle initiation stage. But the grain yield had significantly responded only up to 80 kg ha?1 N, although soil labile C as well as gaseous C emission was noticed to be highest at 120 kg ha?1 N. Hence, 80 kg N ha?1 is a better option in the wet season at low land tropical flooded rice in eastern India for sustaining grain yield and minimizing potential emission of CO2 and CH4.

Abstract

A short-term study was conducted to investigate the greenhouse gas emissions in five typical soils under two crop residue management practices: raw rice straw (Oryza sativa L., cv) and its derived biochar application. Rice straw and its derived biochar (two biochars, produced at 350 and 500°C and referred to as BC350 and BC500, respectively) were incubated with the soils at a 5% (weight/weight) rate and under 70% water holding capacity for 28 d. Incorporation of BC500 into soils reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission in all five soils by 4?40% and 62?98%, respectively, compared to the untreated soils, whereas methane (CH4) emission was elevated by up to about 2 times. Contrary to the biochars, direct return of the straw to soil reduced CH4 emission by 22?69%, whereas CO2 increased by 4 to 34 times. For N2O emission, return of rice straw to soil reduced it by over 80% in two soils, while it increased by up to 14 times in other three soils. When all three greenhouse gases were normalized on the CO2 basis, the global warming potential in all treatments followed the order of straw > BC350 > control > BC500 in all five soils. The results indicated that turning rice straw into biochar followed by its incorporation into soil was an effective measure for reducing soil greenhouse gas emission, and the effectiveness increased with increasing biochar production temperature, whereas direct return of straw to soil enhanced soil greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract

To evaluate the carbon budget in soils under different cropping systems, the carbon dioxide (CO2) flux from soils was measured in a total of 11 upland crop fields within a small watershed in central Hokkaido over the no snow cover months for 3 years. The CO2 flux was measured using a closed chamber method at bare plots established in each field to estimate soil organic matter decomposition. Temporal variation in instantaneous soil CO2 fluxes within the sites was mainly controlled by soil temperature and moisture. Annual mean CO2 fluxes and cumulative CO2 emissions had no significant relationship with soil temperature and moisture (P > 0.2). However, there was a significant quadratic relationship between annual mean CO2 flux or cumulative CO2 emission and soil clay plus silt content (%) (R2 = 0.72~0.74, P < 0.0003). According to this relationship, the optimum condition for soil CO2 emission is at a clay plus silt content of 63%. The cumulative CO2 emission during the no snow cover season within each year varied from 1,159 to 7,349 kg C ha?1 at the different sites. The amount of crop residue carbon retained in the soils following a cropping season was not enough to offset the CO2 emission from soil organic matter decomposition at all sites. As a consequence, the calculation of the soil carbon budget (i.e. the difference between the carbon added as crop residues and compost and the carbon lost as CO2 from organic matter decomposition) ranged from –7,349 to –785 kg C ha?1, except for a wheat site where a positive value of 4,901 kg C ha?1 was observed because of a large input of organic carbon with compost. The negative values of the soil carbon budget indicate that these cropping systems were net sources of atmospheric CO2.

Agricultural soils are a primary source of anthropogenic trace gas emissions, and the subtropics contribute greatly, particularly since 51% of world soils are in these climate zones. A field experiment was carried out in an ephemeral wetland in central Zimbabwe in order to determine the effect of cattle manure (1.36% N) and mineral N fertilizer (ammonium nitrate, 34.5% N) application on N2O fluxes from soil. Combined applications of 0 kg N fertilizer + 0 Mg cattle manure ha?1 (control), 100 kg N fertilizer + 15 Mg manure ha?1 and 200 kg N fertilizer + 30 Mg manure ha?1 constituted the three treatments arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Tomato and rape crops were grown in rotation over a period of two seasons. Emissions of N2O were sampled using the static chamber technique. Increasing N fertilizer and manure application rates from low to high rates increased the N2O fluxes by 37–106%. When low and high rates were applied to the tomato and rape crops, 0.51%, 0.40%, and 0.93%, 0.64% of applied N was lost as N2O, respectively. This implies that rape production has a greater N2O emitting potential than the production of tomatoes in wetlands.

Purpose

Ecosystem restorations can impact carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions which are important greenhouse gasses. Alpine meadows are degraded worldwide, but restorations are increasing. Because their soils represent large carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools, they may produce significant amounts of CO2 and N2O depending on the plant species used in restorations. In addition, warming and N deposition may impact soil CO2 and N2O emissions from restored meadows.

Materials and methods

We collected soils from degraded meadows and plots restored using three different plant species at Wugong Mountain (Jiangxi, China). We measured CO2 and N2O emissions when soils were incubated at different temperatures (15, 25 or 35 °C) and levels of N addition (control vs. 4 g m?2) to understand their responses to warming and N deposition.

Results and discussion

Dissolved organic C was higher in restored plots (especially with Fimbristylis dichotoma) compared to non-restored bare soils, and their soil inorganic N was lower. CO2 emission rates were increased by vegetation restorations, decreased by N deposition, and increased by warming. CO2 emission rates were similar for the three grass species at 15 and 25 °C, but they were lower with Miscanthus floridulus at 35 °C. Soils from F. dichotoma and Carex chinensis plots had higher N2O emissions than degraded or M. floridulus plots, especially at 25 °C.

Conclusions

These results show that the effects of restorations on soil greenhouse gas emissions depended on plant species. In addition, these differences varied with temperature suggesting that future climate should be considered when choosing plant species in restorations to predict soil CO2 and N2O emissions and global warming potential.

In this paper we describe the accumulation of soil organic matter (SOM) during pedogenesis and the processes that can lead to the emission of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) to the atmosphere via SOM decomposition and denitrification. We discuss the role of management on SOM accumulation and loss, and the potential for controlling emission or comsumption of greenhouse gases by soils. We conclude that under current climate conditions there are global scale opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from soils and increase the indirect sequestration of greenhouse gases in soils through improved soil management.

2009—2010年和2010—2011年冬小麦生长季T1(传统模式)、T2(高产高效模式)、T3(再高产模式)和T4(再高产高效和土壤生产力提高模式)处理土壤排放的温室气体碳当量分别依次为8 880 kg(CO2).hm 2、8 372 kg(CO2).hm 2、9 600 kg(CO2).hm 2、9 318kg(CO2).hm 2和13 395 kg(CO2).hm 2、12 904 kg(CO2).hm 2、13 933 kg(CO2).hm 2、13 189 kg(CO2).hm 2。

A high soil nitrogen (N) content in irrigated areas quite often results in environmental problems. Improving the management practices of intensive agriculture can mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study compared the effect of maize stover incorporation or removal together with different mineral N fertilizer rates (0, 200 and 300 kg N ha?1) on the emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) on a sprinkler-irrigated maize (Zea mays L.). The trail was conducted in the Ebro Valley (NE Spain) in a high nitrate-N soil (i.e. 200 g NO3–N kg?1). Nitrous oxide and CO2 emissions were sampled weekly using a semi-static closed chamber and quantified using the photoacoustic technique in 2011 and 2012. Applying sidedress N fertilizer tended to increase N2O emissions whereas stover incorporation did not have any clear effect. Nitrification was probably the main process leading to N2O. Denitrification was limited by the low soil moisture content (WFPS <?54%), due to an adequate irrigation management. Emissions ranged from ??0.11 to 0.36% of the N applied, below the IPCC (2007) values. Nitrogen fertilization tended to reduce CO2 emission, but only in 2011. Stover incorporation increased CO2 emission. Nitrogen use efficiency decreased with increasing mineral fertilizer supply. The application of N in high N soils of the Ebro Valley is not necessary until the soil restores a normal mineral N content, regardless of stover management. This will combine productivity with keeping N2O and CO2 emissions under control provided irrigation is adequately managed. Testing soil NO3 ?–N contents before fertilizing would improve N fertilizer recommendations.

Consequent to the interest in converting degraded lands for cultivation of biofuel crops, concerns have been expressed about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from changes in soil‐carbon (C) stock following land conversions. A literature‐based study was undertaken for estimating the magnitude of emission of GHGs, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), following an assessment of the extent and causes of land degradation and the nature of CO2 emission from soils. The study estimated the potential for CO2 emission resulting from changes in soil‐carbon stock following land conversions, using oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) as a case study. The analysis indicated that, overall, the magnitude of CO2 emission resulting from changes in soil C stock per se following opening up of degraded land would be low compared with other potential sources of CO2 emission. However, lack of data on critical aspects such as baseline soil C status was a limitation of the study. Soil respiration is the single best measure of GHG emission from soils. Fixation of C in additional biomass will compensate, over time, for C loss through soil respiration following a change in land use or land management, unless such changes involve conversion of existing large C stocks. Therefore, any net CO2 emission from soils resulting from changes in soil C stock following opening up of degraded land is likely to be a short‐term phenomenon. The estimations used in the study are based on various assumptions, which need to be validated by experimental field data. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Abstract

Wheel‐traffic induced soil compaction has been shown to limit crop productivity, and its interaction with tillage method could affect soil nutrient transformations. A study was conducted during 1993–1994 to determine interactive effects of tillage method (conventional tillage and no‐tillage) and wheel‐traffic (traffic and no traffic) on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) at a long‐term (initiated 1987) research site at Shorter, Alabama. The cropping system at this study site is a corn (Zea mays L.) ‐ soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr] rotation with crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) as a winter cover crop. Soil organic C, total N, and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) were not significantly affected by six years of traffic and tillage treatments. However, conventional tillage compared to no‐tillage almost doubled the amount of CO2‐C respired over the entire observation period and during April 1994 field operations. Soil respiration was stimulated immediately after application of wheel‐ traffic, but nontrafficked soils produced greater amounts of CO2‐C compared to trafficked soils during other periods of observation. Nitrogen mineralization was significantly lower from no‐tillage‐trafficked soils compared to conventional tillage‐trafficked and no‐tillage‐nontrafficked soils for the 1993 growing season. A laboratory incubation indicated the presence of relatively easily mineralizable N substrates from conventional tillage‐trafficked soil compared to conventional tillage‐nontrafficked and no‐till‐trafficked soils. For the coarse textured soil used in this study it appears that conventional tillage in combination with wheel‐traffic may promote the highest levels of soil microbial activity.

Abstract

A comprehensive procedure has been developed and is reported here for (i) sampling air above a soil surface and (ii) analyzing it for the three greenhouse gases: methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O). The automated gas‐chromatography procedure simultaneously analyzes for CH4, CO2, and N2O and has a precision of 0.87, 2.17, and 0.74%, respectively. Method-detection limits are 0.04 ppm for CH4, 25.5 ppm for CO2, and 7.4 ppb for N2O. The procedure is used to monitor greenhouse gas exchanges at soil surfaces; its precision and automated ability to analyze large sample numbers produces quality data available for upscaling and modeling for inventory purposes; and it is used for developing a process‐based understanding of the mechanisms controlling greenhouse gas fluxes at the soil surface, which can then be applied to develop mitigation strategies.

Ethanol production results in distiller grain, and biodiesel produces glycerol as by-product. However, there is limited information on effects of their addition on evolution of N2O and CO2 from soils, yet it is important to enable our understanding of impacts of biofuel production on greenhouse gas budgets. The objective of this study was to evaluate the direct effects of adding wet distillers grain (WDG), thin stillage (TS), and glycerol at three rates on greenhouse gas emissions (N2O and CO2) and nutrient supply rates in a cultivated soil from the Canadian prairies. The WDG and TS application rates were: 100, 200, or 400 kg N ha?1, whereas glycerol was applied at: 40, 400, or 4,000 kg C ha?1 applied alone (G???N) or in a combination with 300 kg N ha?1 (G?+?N). In addition, conventional amendments of urea (UR) and dehydrated alfalfa (DA) were added at the same rates of total N as the by-products for comparative purposes. The production of N2O and CO2 was measured over an incubation period of 10 days in incubation chambers and Plant Root Simulator? resin membrane probes were used to measure nutrient (NH 4 + -N, NO 3 ? -N, and PO 4 ?3 -P) supply rates in the soil during incubation. Per unit of N added, urea tended to result in the greatest N2O production, followed by wet distillers grain and thin stillage, with glycerol and dehydrated alfalfa resulting in the lowest N2O production. Cumulative N2O production increased with increasing the rate of N-containing amendments and was the highest at the high rate of UR treatment. Addition of urea with glycerol contributed to a higher rate of N2O emission, especially at the low rate of glycerol. The DA and WDG resulted in the greatest evolution of CO2 from the soil, with the thin stillage resulting in less CO2 evolved per unit of N added. Addition of N fertilizer along with glycerol enhanced microbial activity and decomposition. The amendments had significant impacts on release of available nutrient, with the UR treatments providing the highest NO 3 ? -N supply rate. The TS treatments supplied the highest rate of NH 4 + -N, followed by WDG compared to the other amendments. The WDG treatments were able to provide the greatest supply of PO 4 ?3 -P supply in comparison to the other amendments. Microbial N immobilization was associated with glycerol treatments applied alone. This study showed that the investigated biofuel by-products can be suitable soil amendments as a result of their ability to supply nutrients and N2O emissions that did not exceed that of the conventional urea fertilizer.

Soil sequestration of atmospheric CO2 through land application of organic residues may have beneficial effects as a strategy to offset the increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. The significance of different variables on GHG production and soil C sink capacity was investigated by monitoring CO2 and N2O fluxes from amended soils under laboratory conditions. In the first experiment, the effects of the chemical composition and complexity of three N-rich organic fertilisers (blood meal, hydrolysed leather, and hoof and horn meal) on the CO2 and N2O productions were studied. A second experiment was aimed at evaluating the effects of the degree of transformation of composts prepared from two-phase olive mill waste on soil C sink capacity. The three N-rich organic fertilisers caused different CO2 and N2O evolution patterns in the amended soils, despite their similar elemental composition. The total amount of added C that was mineralised in the soil ranged from 10.4% to 15.5%, while N2O-N originating from horn and hoof meal was 6 and 13 times higher than that coming from hydrolysed leather and blood meal, respectively. Mineralisation of the C added to the soil was inversely correlated to the degree of stabilisation of the composting mixtures. Soils amended with the initial composting mixture evolved from 2 to 7.3 times more CO2-C than the soil amended with the more stabilised compost. However, the C conservation efficiency of organic residues, calculated by the combined losses during composting, and after land application, was higher for the less transformed organic materials. Both studies showed the key importance of the variables studied on the GHG emissions and C sink efficiency of amended soils under controlled conditions. Laboratory experiments could be a useful tool to assist in the designing of field scale experiments for an effective quantification and monitoring of the overall changes in soil C and N pools.

We investigated in the laboratory the influence of a municipal solid waste applied to soil at two different particle sizes (<2 and <0.5 mm) and the presence or absence of the Eisenia fetida earthworm on soil carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, as well as on the changes in chemical [ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3N), soluble carbon (C), and soluble carbohydrates] and biochemical (dehydrogenase activity) properties of the soil. The presence of Eisenia fetida caused an increase in the emission of both gases (CO2 and N2O) in municipal solid waste (MSW)–amended soils due to the enhanced soil microbial activity and the degradation of the exogenous organic matter. Soil gas fluxes were influenced by the particle size of the organic waste added. The lowest particle size (<0.5 mm) increased the contact surface of the organic amendment, facilitating the accessibility to the microorganisms, enhancing soil biological activity, and the mineralization of the organic matter.

Research information from a systematic planned study on the effects of vehicular passages and axle load on soil carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes and soil carbon (C) sequestration under long‐term NT farming is scanty. Therefore, the present study was conducted on an on‐going 20‐year experiment to assess the impacts of variable vehicular passages of a low axle load on soil CO2 emission and soil C sequestration from a no‐till (NT) managed corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean (Glycine max Linneo) rotation in comparison with that a soil under woodlots (soils under natural wooded plantation). The experimental treatment consisted of an empty wagon [0 Mg load for compaction (C‐0; control)] compared with 2 (C‐2) and 4 (C‐4) passages of 2.5 Mg water wagon axle load, applied to the entire plot every year during April/May for 20 consecutive years. Soil samples were obtained in November 2016 to determine the effects of various vehicular passages on C and nitrogen (N) contents and CO2 emissions. Soil CO2 fluxes were measured from November 16, 2016, to May 30, 2017, on the bi‐weekly (November to December and April to May) and monthly (January to March) basis by using high‐density polyvinyl chloride static gas chambers. The soil CO2 fluxes ranged from –1.05 to 9.03 g CO2 m?2 d?1. The lowest soil CO2 fluxes were observed in December coinciding with the minimum soil temperature. In general, daily soil CO2 fluxes were higher under C‐0 than those under other treatments. Vehicular traffic and axle load reduced the cumulative emission of CO2 by 22.6 and 29.8% under C‐2 and C‐4, respectively, compared with that under C‐0 (6.09 Mg ha?1). Soil and air temperatures had a significant positive correlation with the diurnal fluxes of soil CO2 in all the treatments except that under C‐4. Electrical conductivity, soil C and N contents and pools did not differ significantly among the treatments. Further, 2 to 4 passages of vehicles with 2.5 Mg of axle load decreased the soil CO2 emission on Crosby silt loam under NT as compared to that under the control. Therefore, continuous cultivation of row crops with moderate trafficking under NT and residue retention is recommended, and it also reduces the potential of soil CO2 emission while improving the soil organic C pools of well‐drained soils of Central Ohio.

Abstract

A soil test for mineralizable soil N had been calibrated for winter wheat in the Willamette Valley of western Oregon. Seventy‐eight percent of the variation in spring N uptake by unfertilized wheat was explained by N mineralized from mid‐winter soil samples incubated anaerobically for 7 days at 40°C. Mineralizable N (Nmin) ranged from 10 to 30 mg N kg?1 and was used to predict N fertilizer needs. Recommended rates of N were correlated (R2=0.87) with maximum economic rates of N fertilizer. Subsequent farmer adoption of no‐till sowing and a high frequency of soil tests>30 mg N kg?1 prompted reevaluation of the soil test. Four N fertilizer rates [0, 56, G, and G+56 kg N ha?1] were compared in 12 m×150 m farmer‐managed plots. Grower's N rates (G) ranged from 90 to 180 kg N ha?1 and were based on Nmin and NH4‐N plus NO3‐N soil tests. Averaged across ten no‐till and five conventionally tilled sites, grain yield and crop N uptake were maximized at the recommended rate of N. Results demonstrate that N fertilizer needs for winter wheat can be predicted over a wide range of mineralizable soil N (10 to 75 mg N kg?1) and that the same soil test calibration can be used for conventionally sown and direct‐seeded winter wheat.
