Swards of Phalaris aquatica-Trifolium subterraneum were subjected to four defoliation treatments—zero, low (11 sheep ha−1) and high (22 sheep ha−1) stocking rates, and weekly cutting. At high stocking rate the annual grass Hordeum leporinum dominated while clover was dominant at low and zero stocking rates. Weekly cutting suppressed species other than clover and so failed to simulate grazing.
There were similarities in net herbage production between zero and lightly grazed swards and between heavily grazed and repeatedly cut swards. Net herbage production decreased in the order undisturbed sward < lightly grazed sward < heavily grazed sward < repeatedly cut sward.
When sheep grazed swards where herbage mass was low their daily consumption of herbage, and therefore liveweight change, depended on their recent grazing experience. Sheep accustomed to swards where herbage mass was low ate more because they grazed for much longer each day than unaccustomed sheep, although they selected a diet of similar digestibility.  相似文献

The effect of stocking density on the productivity of yearling female sheep was studied over the 1960 grazing season. The cumulative effect on pasture productivity of previous differences in grazing pressure was eliminated by re-randomization of the pasture after each grazing cycle. Stocking densities from 12 to 30 sheep/acre/unit of time were imposed from March to September, followed by 7 months on a common treatment to measure subsequent effects on animal fertility. Correlations were found between stocking density and (a) liveweight gains, (b) loss of weight in fasting, (c) quality and quantity of herbage residues at the end of the last grazing cycle. Subsequent animal fertility was not measurably affected.  相似文献

A comparison was made of the digestibility, voluntary intake and concentration of N in faecal organic matter in castrated male sheep and non-lactating cows offered herbage ad libitum. The sheep ate 22% more herbage DM per kg liveweight than the cows. In general, the sheep and cows digested the organic matter of the herbage to the same extent, although on two occasions significantly higher digestibilities were observed in cows than in sheep. Similar concentrations of N in faecal organic matter in sheep and cows were matched by similar digestibilities of herbage organic matter. Regression equations relating herbage organic matter digestibility to faecal N concentration were not significantly different between sheep and cattle.  相似文献

Continuous stocking with sheep at high stocking rates may reduce the content of white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixed grass-clover swards. The present experiment was carried out to investigate the effects on sward production and composition of resting a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)- white clover sward from grazing and taking a cut for conservation. Swards were set-stocked with 25 and 45 yearling wethers ha?1 either throughout a grazing season, or on swards that were rested for a 6-week period and then cut in early, mid- or late season. In an additional treatment swards were cut only and not grazed. Net herbage accumulation was higher at the lower of the two stocking rates and was marginally increased by the inclusion of a rest period at the high but not the low stocking rate. Clover content was higher at the lower stocking rate and was increased by the inclusion of a rest period by 30% at 45 sheep ha?1and by 11% at 25 sheep ha?1 The effect was most marked at the end of the rest period before cutting. When rested from grazing the tiller density of ryegrass decreased although tiller length increased, and clover stolon length, petiole length and leaflet diameter increased though leaf and node number per unit length of stolon decreased; the reverse applied when the sward was returned to grazing after cutting. At the high stocking rate, rest periods in mid-season or later maintained the greatest clover content and marginally increased total net herbage accumulation. At the low stocking rate the timing of the rest period had no significant effect on total net herbage accumulation or on clover content. These results show that the combination of grazing and cutting is of benefit where the stocking rate is high enough to threaten clover survival and limit sheep performance. However, at such a stocking rate, feed reserves are at a minimum throughout the grazing season and so opportunities for resting the sward are probably low.  相似文献

Friesian heifers grazing Cenchrus ciliaris cv. Biloela were supplemented with 0, 3 or 6 kg concentrates daily during weeks 10–34 (±1·7) of lactation during either the rainy or the dry season. The overall responses to concentrate were identical between seasons at 0·27 kg extra milk and solids corrected milk per kg. Supplementation increased total feed intake and modified the grazing behaviour of cows. For each kg concentrate organic matter eaten, herbage organic matter intake was reduced by 0·64 and 0·42 kg in the rainy and dry seasons respectively and the time spent grazing by 11 min. Higher intakes in the dry season were the result of an increased rate of biting and were reflected in liveweight change but not milk yield.  相似文献

The effects of cereal and protein supplements on feed intake and liveweight gain were studied. In 1975, steers were continuously stocked on autumn pasture and fed no supplement or 8 g dry matter (DM) per kg liveweight (LW) per d as rolled barley (crude protein (CP) concentration 120 g kg-1), lucerne cobs (CP concentration 190 g kg-1) or a mixed concentrate (CP concentration 300 g kg-1). In 1976, steers were continuously stocked or rotationally grazed in summer and fed no supplement or 7 g DM per kg LW per d as either rolled barley (CP concentration 130 g kg-1) or a mixture of rolled barley and groundnut meal (CP concentration 210 g kg-1). Herbage organic matter (OM) intakes in 1975 and 1976 were depressed on average by 22 and 15% respectively with supplementation, but total OM intakes were increased by 9 and 15% respectively. Daily liveweight gain was not significantly increased by supplementation in 1975 when herbage allowance was ample but was significantly increased in 1976 when herbage allowance was limited and herbage digestibility was lower. Protein concentration of the concentrate did not significantly affect daily gain in either year nor was there any difference in gain between rotational grazing and continuous stocking.  相似文献

For three 8-week periods of the grazing season 48 spring-calving cows were continuously stocked at either a high or a low rate (average 4.9 and 4.3 cows ha−1 respectively) which declined through the season. Within each stocking rate group half the cows were allowed access to hay for 45 min after morning milking; the other half received no hay.
Total dry matter (DM) intakes were increased by offering hay, and intakes of hay were greater at the high stocking rate and during prolonged periods of inclement weather. However, there were times when, because of low herbage height and adverse weather, offering hay once daily could not prevent a decline in total DM intake. Grazing time was reduced and ruminating time increased by offering hay, but the rate of biting at pasture was unaffected. Hay DM was eaten at twice the rate of intake of herbage DM.
Offering hay increased milk yield in early season and liveweight gain in late season. The benefits of offering hay were greatest for the higher yielding cows. There were no significant effects on milk composition.
Stocking rate had only small effects on herbage height, but stocking at the higher rate tended to reduce herbage DM intake and reduced live-weight gain in late season. Levels of utilized metabolizable energy from grazed herbage were high (average 106 GJ ha−1) but were reduced by feeding hay and stocking at the lower rate.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in 1967 and 1968 in which HerefordXFriesian (Experiment 1) and Friesian (Experiment 2) steer calves horn in April were turned out to graze at one week or 3 months of age, respectively, and maintained at three stocking densities in the ratio 1:2:3 animals per unit area. The calves grazed paddocks of S23 perennial ryegrass in rotation, and were moved when the height of grazed stubble at the medium stocking density was reduced to 8 cm. The rate of liveweight gain and herbage intake per head declined as stocking rate increased. When the results of the two experiments were compared, the weight gain of the calves was more closely related to the weight of herbage residues than to the height of the grazed sward. The rate of liveweight gain was depressed when the amount of herhage left after grazing fell helow 2000–2500 kg OM/ha (1800–2250 Ib/ac).  相似文献

Groups of eight Hereford × Friesian cows and their South Devon cross calves were set stocked over a 24-week grazing season at 3·23 (low), 3·21 (medium) or 4·24 (high) cows ha-1 together with their calves. For the first 8 weeks only two-thirds of the total area was grazed. Increasing the stocking rate from low to medium reduced daily milk yield and cow and calf liveweight gains by 1·2, 0·24 and 0·29 kg d-1 respectively, and from medium to high by 1·2, 0·24 and 0·23 kg d-1. The main sward factor influencing faecal output and herbage intake was the quantity of organic matter on the pastures but the digestibility of the herbage selected also exerted a significant effect on the intake of cows. Major depressions in the herbage intake of cows occurred once the average sward height fell below 7 cm. Output of calf live weight was 628, 658 and 743 kg ha-1 for the 3 stocking rates from low to high, and for cows 246, 179 and 30 kg ha-1. It was concluded that decisions on pasture management should be taken in relation to the cow rather than the calf on set-stocked swards.  相似文献

Groups of 8 steers weighing 300–400 kg (660–880 Ib) were rotationally grazed on a ryegrass-dominant pasture for 115 days. The systems compared were zero grazing (Z), field grazing conducted at the same stocking rate (FC), and field grazing conducted at a stocking rate varied with the intention of giving the same liveweight gain per uiimal as zero grazing (FV). Mean daily liveweight gains were: Z, 0.98; FC, 0.78; FV, 0.90 kg/animal (2.2, 1.7 and 20 Ib/animal), and liveweight gains/unit area were in the ratio 100:78:85. Organic-matter intake, measured on four occasions, was, on average, Z, 6.54; FC, 6.18; FV, 687 kg/head daily (14.4, 13.6 and 15.1Ib). From these results it appears that a comparison of zero grazing and field grazing made at the same stocking rate is likely to underestimate the potential of field grazing for beef production from grass.  相似文献

A comparison was made of the effect of a cereal supplement during early lactation on the performance and intake of ewes suckling two lambs while rotationally grazing pasture at stocking rates of 20, 17 or 14 ewes per ha. Supplement (S) at the high (H) and medium (M) stocking rates resulted in higher organic matter (OM) intakes (grass + supplement) of 2040 and 2500 g d-1 respectively, compared with the herbage OM intakes of unsupplemented (U) ewes of 1750 and 2040 g d-1 respectively. At the low (L) stocking rate the total OM intake of supplemented ewes and the herbage OM intake of unsupplemented ewes was similar at 2250 and 2210 g d-1 respectively.
Lamb growth rate (g d-1) to 12 weeks of age was significantly lower on treatment UH (229) compared with those on UM (253) and UL (262). Growth rates on S treatments were similar (SH 248; SM 261; SL 272) and there were no significant differences between S and U within stocking rates. Unsupplemented ewes lost significantly more weight during the period of intake measurement than those receiving supplement. The speed of rotation was faster where supplement was not fed at the medium and high stocking rates and herbage accumulation under UH was less than under SH. Only at the high stocking rate did feeding a supplement give a higher financial output.  相似文献

Three contrasting defoliation regimes for dairy cows—four cuts annually, severe rotational grazing and lax rotational grazing integrated with cutting—were compared in terms of herbage production, selection and intake per cow. Lax and severe grazing were compared simultaneously and grazing intensity was characterized by means of changes in herbage mass and sward height during grazing.
Herbage growth and yield were similar under cutting, severe grazing and lax grazing/cutting (120 t organic matter (OM) ha−1). Herbage quality and leaf production were highest with severe grazing, which also had a less marked seasonal pattern of growth. The herbage intake per cow was 111 kg OM d−1 with severe grazing and proportionately (0-20) higher at lax grazing/ cutting. 050 of the herbage yield was harvested by cutting at lax grazing/cutting. Selectivity was described with high certainly by the nutrient content prior to defoliation and by the degree of defoliation. Models to quantify this are presented.
Grazing intensity could be described by the size and degree of utilization of the fouled area, and herbage intake was quantified by means of herbage height before and after grazing. Within the range of 80-240 mm sward height prior to grazing, height measurements led to realistic and more accurate estimates than those obtained by measuring organic matter disappearance.
Herbage utilization was depressed significantly by increasing maturity of herbage due to lower nutritive value, but in particular due to reduced green leaf content and increased reproductive development. If sward height did not exceed 250 mm at any time, good utilization by grazing could be obtained.  相似文献

The effects of three stocking rates on fat-lamb production were examined. These stocking rates were imposed upon four grazing systems. The grazing managements had no significant1 effects upon the rate of liveweight gain or the total liveweight of lamb produced per acre, nor were the ewes' liveweights significantly affected. Reasons are suggested. The lambs' rate of liveweight gain was related negatively and the total liveweight of lamb produced per acre was related positively to stocking rate. The ewes' liveweights were similarly affected, there being the highest losses of liveweight under the high stocking rate. In all cases significant differences existed between the stocking rates and there was a significant linear relationship between them. It is concluded that high stocking rates are essential to obtain the maximum fat-lamb production on a 'per acre' basis.  相似文献

Separate groups of non-lactating cows and wether sheep grazed at similar herbage allowances for two successive 5-d periods on swards that had previously been grazed frequently or infrequently with the intention of creating differences in canopy structure. Measurements were made of sward structure and composition, ingestive behaviour and diet composition. The preliminary treatments had little effect upon either sward conditions or animal behaviour.
Herbage mass was reduced from 4020 kg dry matter (DM) ha−1 to 3290 kg DM ha−1 on average over a 5-d grazing period as a consequence of the relatively low grazing pressure imposed. This resulted in a mean decline in intake per bite of 28%, and the changes for cattle and sheep did not differ significantly. However, there was a marked difference in the other behavioural responses of the two species; in the sheep biting rate fell and grazing time increased with declining herbage mass, particularly in the sward previously grazed infrequently, whereas the changes in the cattle were small.
Differences in the botanical composition of the herbage eaten by cattle and sheep were minor, but there was a small but consistent advantage to the sheep in the digestibility of the herbage eaten.
In the first of the two periods the variation in surface height after grazing was substantially greater for sheep-grazed than for cattle-grazed swards, indicating more patchy grazing by the sheep.
Estimates of daily herbage organic matter (OM) intake calculated from ingestive behaviour variables were high (means 38 and 32 g (kg LW) −1 for cattle and sheep respectively) and usually declined substantially over a grazing period.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of an early (February; F) or delayed (April; A) primary spring grazing date and two stocking rates, high (H) and medium (M), on the grazing management, dry matter (DM) intake of grass herbage and milk production of spring‐calving dairy cows grazing a perennial ryegrass sward in the subsequent summer. Sixty‐four Holstein‐Friesian dairy cows (mean of 58 d in milk) were assigned to one of four grazing treatments (n = 16) which were imposed from 12 April to 3 July 2004. Cows on the early spring‐grazing treatment were grazed at 5·5 cows ha?1 (treatment FH) and 4·5 cows ha?1 (treatment FM) while cows on the late‐grazing treatment were grazed at 6·4 cows ha?1 (treatment AH) and 5·5 cows ha?1 (treatment AM). The organic matter digestibility and crude protein concentration of the grass herbage were higher on the early‐grazing treatment than on the late‐grazing treatment. The cows on the FM treatment had significantly (P < 0·001) higher milk (24·5 kg), solids‐corrected milk (22·5 kg), fat (P < 0·01, 918 g) and protein (831 g) yields than the other three treatments. Cows on the FM treatment had a higher (P < 0·001) DM intake of grass herbage by 2·3 kg DM per cow per day than cows on the AH treatment, which had a DM intake significantly lower than all other treatments (15·2 kg DM per cow per day). The results of the present study showed that grazing in early spring has a positive effect on herbage quality in subsequent grazing rotations. The study also concluded that early spring‐grazed swards stocked at a medium stocking rate (4·5 cows ha?1; FM) resulted in the highest DM intake of grass herbage and milk production.  相似文献

In view of the paucity of information on the effect of grassland irrigation on livestock production, a grazing experiment was made in 1960 and 1961 in which the response to irrigation was measured at two dairy-cow stocking rates. The method and herbage results are described.
The increases in herbage utilized as a result of irrigation were comparable with the results of cutting experiments, averaging 342 lb of ash-free organic matter per acre-inch of water used. Irrigation also increased the uniformity of herbage production.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the influence of herbage mass under continuous stocking management with sheep on rates of herbage growth (G), senescence (S) and net production of green herbage (NP) in a mixed-species sward of Lolium perenne. Poa annua and Trifolium repens. Plots were maintained in as nearly constant herbage mass as possible at 500, 700, 1000 and 1700 kg organic matter (OM) ha−1 by continuous but variable stocking with sheep for the period May to July inclusive. Estimates of G, S and NP were obtained for each species from repeated measurements over two 2-week periods on individually identified grass tillers or clover stolons. Estimates of species population densities enabled estimates of G. S and NP per unit area to be made.
Rates of G were higher and of S were lower for Lolium tillers and Trifolium stolons than for Poa tillers. The laminae of Poa tillers occupied inferior positions in the canopy of the swards maintained at higher herbage masses and were less accessible to the grazing animals, so that Poa tissue was less well utilized.
The total population densities of tillers and stolons declined at herbage masses both above and below 700 kg OM ha−1. The rate of G for the three species combined increased with herbage  相似文献

The production and use of cocksfoot foggage for winter grazing at the Hannah Dairy Research Institute in the period 1956–61 is described. Two acres of cocksfoot (S37) were sown broadcast in 1956 and two acres were drilled in rows 28 in apart in 1957. The average annual application of fertilizer nutrients was 118 lb. N, 51 1b. P2O5 and 142 lb. K2O per acre.
The mean yield of the broadcast section was 7450 lb. dry matter/acre/annum compared with 6090 lb. from the rowcrop section. Normally two crops of grass were harvested from the field in the summer, and one grazing was made in the winter. The yield of winter herbage dry matter was 28% and 26% of the total annual yield of the broadcast and the rowcrop sections, respectively.
The field was grazed for four successive winters by 5–10 bulling heifers each weighing 650–850 lb. They received no other feed during the grazing period. Grazing started in December and finished in February, March or April in different years. The mean intake of herbage dry matter was only 6 lb./day, and on average the heifers lost 80 lb. liveweight each winter. This loss was regained after 4–6 weeks when the winter grazing finished. Twenty-nine of the 30 heifers held to the first or second service while grazing the winter herbage.
On average the broadcast section gave 340 heifer-grazing-days per acre during the winter and the rowcrop section 260 days. The cost of a heifer-grazing-day was 3id. and 4id. on the broadcast and rowcrop sections, respectively.
The dry matter of the herbage cut on 19 December 1960 had a digestible crude protein content of 59% and a starch equivalent of 34.
It is concluded that on well-drained land the technique of foggage production and of winter grazing can usefully extend the normal grazing season and hence reduce the costs of winter feeding.  相似文献

A grazing experiment is described in which the liveweight gains of small East African Zebu heifers were measured from Hyparrhenia rufa/Stylosanthes gracilis and H. rufa/Centrosema pubescens swards. The design of this trial enabled animal production to be assessed from variations in liveweight gain since stocking rate was maintained at the same level on both pastures, but the overall stocking rate was varied according to seasonal changes in herbage availability.
Production was measured both by using individual animals within a group as independent units, and by true animal replication. Gains from individual animal blocks were shown to be of value for comparing pasture species, provided that the composition of the grazing group was varied. Problems of conducting and interpreting small–scale grazing trials as means for evaluating pastures are discussed.  相似文献
