AIM: To determine whether short-term progesterone supplementation post mating or shearing of ewes in early pregnancy affected either the proportion of ewes that lambed or that had multiple lambs, or the birthweight of lambs. METHODS: Romney ewes (n=457) were synchronised in oestrus using controlled internal drug-releasing (CIDR) devices containing progesterone, and mated to Romney rams over a 5-day period. The mid-point of mating (Day 0) occurred 2 days after the withdrawal of CIDR devices. Ewes mated (n=397) were randomly allocated to one of four treatment groups: shearing at Day 5, shearing at Day 30, no shearing, and no shearing plus progesterone supplementation using a CIDR device inserted on Day 3 for 6 days. During the period from Day 5 to Day 27, six harnessed Suffolk rams were placed with the ewes and matings recorded. At Day 48, all ewes that did not return to the Suffolk rams were scanned for pregnancy using ultrasound. At Day 140, single- and multiple-bearing ewes were set-stocked at 15.1 and 12.2 ewes/ha, respectively, and equivalent numbers of ewes from each treatment group were placed in each paddock. Blood samples from 10 unshorn and 10 progesterone-supplemented ewes were collected on Days 3, 6 and 9, and analysed for plasma progesterone concentrations. Lambs were identified to their dam and weighed within 12 h of birth, and again at 27 and 93 days after the mid-point of lambing. The ewes were weighed at regular intervals throughout the trial. RESULTS: Plasma progesterone concentrations of supplemented ewes were higher than those of unsupplemented ewes (3.28 vs 1.75 ng/ml) on Day 6 (p=0.02) but not on Day 9 (4.58 vs 4.63 ng/ml). Treatment of ewes had no effect on either the proportion of ewes which lambed to the synchronised mating period or that had multiple lambs. Lambs born to ewes shorn at Day 30 tended (p=0.09) to be heavier at birth (by 0.28 kg) than those born to unshorn ewes but this effect was not evident when data were corrected for length of gestation. Neither shearing at Day 5 nor progesterone supplementation had any effect on the birthweight of lambs, and the treatment of ewes had no effect on the survival rate of lambs to weaning. CONCLUSIONS: Progesterone supplementation for 6 days beginning 3 days post mating did not increase either the proportion of ewes that lambed or that had multiple lambs, or the birthweight of lambs. Shearing 5 days after mating had no significant effect on the reproductive performance of ewes and need not be avoided, but is unlikely to result in an increase in lamb birthweight. Shearing ewes at Day 30 may result in an increase in the birthweight of lambs but, ideally, ewes should be further advanced in pregnancy before shearing is undertaken.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine the effects of liveweight and condition score of ewes at mating, and shearing mid-pregnancy, on birthweights and growth rates of twin lambs from birth to the time of weaning, and; to determine whether any effect of condition score is independent of liveweight. METHODS: Romney ewes (n=435) which conceived within a 17-day mating period and successfully gave birth to and reared twin lambs to weaning were used. Ewes were managed during pregnancy so that their total liveweight increased at a level equivalent to the expected growth of the conceptuses. Approximately half of the ewes were shorn 70 days after the mid-point of mating, and the remainder were left unshorn, at which time they had 6-months' wool growth. All lambs were weighed within 12 h of birth and again at weaning. RESULTS: There was a significant linear relationship (R2=0.99) between mean group liveweight and condition score of ewes at mating (difference of 7.3 kg per 1.0 unit condition score). Liveweight of ewes at mating had small but significant (p<0.05) positive effects on both birthweights and growth rates of twin lambs to weaning. Ewes that had condition scores of 3.5-4.0 (scale 0-5) at mating gave birth to significantly (p<0.05) lighter lambs than ewes that had condition scores <3.5. The condition score of ewes at mating was positively associated with growth rates of lambs, although this effect was largely explained by variation in the liveweight of ewes at mating. Twin lambs born to ewes shorn mid-pregnancy were significantly (p<0.05) heavier at birth (by 0.4 kg) and at weaning (p<0.05) than those born to unshorn ewes. The heavier weaning weights of lambs born to ewes shorn mid-pregnancy were due to a heavier birthweights rather than increased growth rate. CONCLUSIONS: Liveweight and condition score of ewes at mating had small positive effects on growth rates to weaning of twin lambs. Shearing mid-pregnancy increased birthweights and weaning weights of twin lambs. To achieve high weaning weights of twin lambs, farmers should ensure ewes attain high liveweights and condition scores at mating and shear mid-pregnancy. One hundred Scottish Blackface ewes were mated to New Zealand Romney rams heterozygous for the Massey I (t1) centric fusion (Robertsonian) translocation. The lambing percentage of ewes lambed was 131 and the segregation of normal to balanced heterozygous lambs was 1:1. No chromosomally unbalanced lambs were born. Nine heterozygous females were mated to a heterozygous male and produced two homozygous, three heterozygous and seven normal lambs. The homozygous male had hypoplastic testes. The results indicate that there is no significant reduced fertility with 53XYt1 rams but that fertility of 52XYt1t1 rams should be further investigated.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine if the frequency distribution of time to oestrus observed after the introduction of rams, and additional ewes in oestrus, is affected by the administration of oestradiol- 17beta. To determine if the fertility following mating at the first induced oestrus in progesterone-primed ewes may be increased with administration of oestradiol-17beta. METHODS: In Experiment 1, ewes received 40 mug oestradiol- 17beta 3 (E3; n=61) or 5 (E5; n=56) days before the introduction of rams; 61 ewes were controls (C1). In Experiment 2, a controlled internal drug-releasing (CIDR) device was inserted in 95 ewes on Day -5 (Day 0 = introduction of rams). In addition, 47 ewes received oestradiol-17beta on Day 0 (CE), and the remaining 48 were controls (C2). In both experiments, additional ewes, brought into oestrus between Days 0 and 2 by hormonal treatments, were introduced with the rams. Onset of oestrus was estimated by visual observation of ewes marked by rams. Pregnancy status of ewes in Experiment 2 was determined using ultrasound, 30 days after oestrus. RESULTS: The total number of ewes detected in oestrus in Experiment 1 was similar between the three groups. The frequency distribution of ewes in oestrus in the E5 group differed from that of ewes in both C1 (p=0.05) and E3 (p<0.001). A similar number of ewes were detected in oestrus between Days 16-20, but the proportion of ewes in oestrus between Days 21-26 was greater for ewes in C1 than E5 or E3. Mean interval to the onset of oestrus was shorter in C1 than E3 which was shorter than E5 ewes (p<0.001). In Experiment 2, the total number of ewes in oestrus were similar between groups. Ewes in oestrus between Days 1-4 (65% and 64% for C2 and CE, respectively) and conception rates over the same period (81% and 80% for C2 and CE, respectively) were also similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Administration of oestradiol-17beta to anoestrous ewes altered the pattern of onset of oestrus, but it did not affect submission or conception rates, regardless of whether or not a short period of progesterone priming with a new CIDR device was included prior to the introduction of rams.  相似文献

Melatonin (MEL) was evaluated for effects on LH, prolactin (PRL) and fertility in spring (Exp. 1, 2) and summer (Exp. 3 to 5). In Exp. 1, 17 ovariectomized ewes bearing estradiol implants were fed 3 mg MEL or vehicle for 44 d beginning May 1. Melatonin decreased (P less than .001) PRL levels but had no effect on LH secretion and response to GnRH. In Exp. 2, 12 ewes each received a 40-d MEL ear implant or a sham implant on March 31. Progesterone-releasing pessaries (CIDR) were applied for 12 d and were withdrawn concomitant with ram joining on May 7. Neither treatment stimulated follicular development or induced estrus or ovulation. Exp. 3 and 4 were contemporary 2 x 2 factorial trials with 24 ewes at each of two locations. Melatonin implants were administered on June 29 and CIDR on July 22. The CIDR were removed and rams (Exp. 3, vasectomized; Exp. 4, fertile) were joined on August 3. Days from introduction of rams to estrus were reduced (P less than .05) by CIDR but not by MEL. All ewes lambed in Exp. 4, and days to estrus and conception were reduced (P less than .001) by CIDR but not by MEL. Exp. 5 was designed like Exp. 4 except that MEL implants were inserted June 20 and rams were joined August 8. To determine the ovarian response to the ram effect after treatment with melatonin, on 8 March, 71 Rasa Aragonesa ewes were randomly assigned to either the treatment group and given an 18mg melatonin implant or the untreated group. On 19 April (day 0), rams were introduced into the flock. Melatonin treatment produced a significantly higher percentage of cyclic ewes at ram introduction (P<0.05). Melatonin-treated ewes had their first oestrus after ram introduction significantly earlier than did untreated ewes (P<0.0001), and the groups differed in the distribution of their ovarian response. Most (80%) of the treated ewes exhibited a silent ovulation followed by a cycle of normal duration, whereas about half (52%) of the untreated ewes exhibited a silent ovulation, a short cycle, and another silent ovulation followed by a cycle of normal duration (P<0.05). At ram introduction, melatonin-treated ewes, cyclic and non-cyclic, had higher mean plasma progesterone concentrations than did untreated ewes. The proportion of ewes that mated within the first 17 days of the mating period was significantly higher among the treated ewes than in the untreated ewes (P<0.0001). Furthermore, at lambing, 39% of the melatonin-treated ewes lambed within the first 17 days of the lambing period, while none of the untreated ewes lambed in that period. The untreated group exhibited peaks in mating between days 18 and 21, and particularly, between days 22 and 25, when the majority of ewes lambed; peaks did not occur in the treatment group. Treated and untreated ewes did not differ significantly in fertility, litter size and fecundity. In conclusion, melatonin treatment modifies the ovarian response to the ram effect in ewes, which leads to modifications in mating patterns, and consequently, the lambing curve.  相似文献

Abstract

AIMS: To determine the effects of liveweight (LW) and condition score (CS) of ewes at mating on both mating performance and scanning percentage, and to determine if effects of CS were independent of LW.

METHODS: Two groups of ewes, comprising 1,780 mixedaged Romney (Rom MA) and 692 composite two-tooth (? East Friesian 1/16 Finn 13/16 Romney, Comp TT) ewes were grazed separately with harnessed rams for two reproductive cycles. Romney rams were used for the first 17 days of mating and then replaced on the morning of Day 18 by Suffolk rams. Ewes were weighed and CS assessed on a scale of 0–5 before the introduction of the rams. Ewes were identified as having been mated during the first cycle only, during both cycles, during the second cycle only, or not mated. All mated ewes were scanned using ultrasound, 50 days after the end of mating, and identified as being either non pregnant, single-, twin- or triplet-bearing.

RESULTS: Linear relationships (R2=0.99) between mean LW and CS at mating were evident for both Rom MA and Comp TT ewes and the mean increase in LW per unit increase in CS was greater in the Rom MA ewes (7.88 kg) than the Comp TT (4.78 kg) ewes (p<0.05). Ewes mated in the second cycle only were significantly (p<0.05) lighter than those mated in the first cycle only. In Rom MA ewes, a greater proportion were mated in the first cycle only if CS was .2.0 than if CS was <2.0, and the proportions of ewes mated in the first cycle only or in both cycles did not differ if CS was ≥2.5. In Comp TT ewes, there was no difference in the proportions mated in the first cycle or both cycles, if CS was ≥2.0. Triplet-bearing ewes were heavier than twin-bearing ewes, which were in turn heavier than both singleton-bearing and non pregnant ewes. Twin-bearing ewes had higher CS than both single-bearing and non pregnant ewes (p<0.05) but differences were not significant if LW was included as a covariate. In both Rom MA and Comp TT ewes, greater proportions were non pregnant and lower proportions had twins if CS was <2.0 than if CS was ≥2.0. In Rom MA ewes only, a greater proportion again had twins and a lower proportion had singletons if CS was ≥3.0 than if CS was <3.0. In Comp TT ewes, the proportion that were non pregnant or twin-bearing did not vary with CS if CS was ≥2.0. Reproductive performance was maximal for Rom MA and Comp TT ewes that had CS at mating ≥3.0 and ≥2.0, respectively, equating to LW of 62.6 and 48.5 kg, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS: In both groups of ewes, CS and LW at mating positively affected reproductive performance measured at the time of mating and at scanning, however, no reproductive advantage was evident above a minimum CS of 3.0 and 2.0, equating to LW of 62.6 and 48.5 kg, for Rom MA and Comp TT ewes, respectively. Sheep farmers should direct management to ensure that no ewes are below these minimum targets rather than ensuring high average LW and/or CS of a mob.  相似文献

Two groups of 24 Hampshire and 26 Suffolk purebred ewes each were used to study effects of cohabitation with cyclic white-faced (WF) ewes on estrous activity in June. Ewes lambed in January, February and March and had been isolated from mature rams since the previous fall breeding. From June 1 to July 2, treated (T) ewes were exposed to vasectomized rams and to 65 WF ewes; control (C) ewes were exposed only to vasectomized rams. Ovulation was assessed with biweekly serum progesterone assays; crayon marks were used to detect estrus. Daily observations of ram behavior were conducted to assess sexual activity of rams joined with T and C ewes. Cohabitation with WF ewes increased (P less than .01) ovulation percentages from 46% in C (42% for Hampshires and 50% for Suffolks) to 76% in T ewes (79% for Hampshires and 73% for Suffolks). Mating percentage also was increased (P less than .05) by cohabitation with WF ewes from 14% for C ewes to 30% for T ewes. Rams with T + WF ewes spent more (P less than .05) time checking ewes for estrus than did rams with C ewes. Hence, cohabitation with cycling WF ewes increased ovulation and mating percentages. Many acyclic T ewes first ovulated after 10 or more days of teasing, possibly due to increased ram contact in the presence of WF ewes.  相似文献

The effect of selenium (Se) supplementation on the reproductive performance of Merino ewes mated out of the normal breeding season was studied in a 2 (no Se supplementation vs Se supplementation) × 2 (ewes mated at natural oestrus vs synchronized oestrus) factorial design with 50 ewes per treatment combination. Synchronization of oestrus was achieved by intravaginal insertion of 40 mg cronolone sponges for 14 days and administration of 440 IU PMSG at sponge withdrawal. Se supplementation was by the addition to the concentrate with 0.5 mg/kg of Se in the form of selenomethionin, for the 3 months prior to the mating and during gestation. Ewes were kept under range conditions in south‐west Spain, and exposed to Merino rams at a female: male ratio of 4 : 1 from 2 days following sponge withdrawal, or the equivalent time, for 21 days. Se supplementation alone did not improve significantly ewe fertility or lamb birth weight, but there was a positive effect of synchronizing ewes mated out of the breeding season as more of these ewes lambed and produced more lambs than those not synchronized. However, a strong interaction was found between synchronization and Se supplementation, causing a deleterious effect on the reproductive performance of ewes. This negative effect, presumably related to high embrionary mortality caused by Se toxicity, should be taken into account for oestrus synchronizing in Se‐deficient areas. The supplementation with Se, for the prevention of nutritional myodystrophy degeneration in lambs, should be conducted in a fashion which does not generate high levels of Se in the ewes around the mating period.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that shearing pregnant ewes at mid- or late-pregnancy is associated with an increase in lamb birth weight. The present study was designed to investigate metabolic responses that may underlie this response. Single- and twin-bearing ewes were either unshorn or shorn at mid-pregnancy (Day 69 of pregnancy; P69), and insulin, glucose and epinephrine challenges were conducted on P109–111 and P132–134. Shearing increased the birth weight of twin lambs by over 1 kg (P < 0.001) without having any effect on singleton birth weight. This response was associated with a 10–20% reduction in the insulin response to a glucose challenge (P < 0.05) without a change in glucose clearance following either glucose or insulin challenges. The lipolytic response to epinephrine challenge increased as pregnancy progressed, but was not associated with the increased birth weight of twin lambs born to shorn ewes. By late pregnancy, a 25% reduction in maternal IGF-I concentration and a two- to threefold increase in maternal IGFBP-1 concentration (P < 0.05) associated with shearing were observed. The increase in lamb birth weight associated with mid-pregnancy shearing may have been associated with an increase in the non-insulin dependent uptake of glucose by the placental-fetal unit.  相似文献

From an extensive series of trials involving approximately 15 000 Romney ewes mated with 435 rams, provisional results are presented on the comparative performance of 14 sire breeds for lamb meat production. The breeds, each represented by ten or more rams, were Southdown, Suffolk, South Suffolk, Hampshire, Dorset Down, South Dorset Down, Poll or Horn Dorset, Border Leicester, English Leicester, Ryeland, Cheviot, Lincoln, Merino and Romney.Important differences exist between sire breeds in progeny survival, with the Southdown being best and the Romney poorest. Progeny of long-wool sires, and particularly the Lincoln, clip more wool at post-weaning shearing than of the Down breeds, which exhibit quite small variation.Sire breeds vary in average live-weight and carcass growth of their progeny, the Suffolk, Hampshire and Dorset breeds producing the heaviest and Merino and Romney the lightest lambs. In terms of lamb live-weight or carcass production per Romney ewe mated, Romney, Merino, Lincoln, Ryeland, Cheviot and English Leicester sires are inferior to the Southdown while Dorset, Suffolk, South Suffolk and Dorset Down are superior.Within any breed, wide differences exist between progeny growth rates of the best and poorest sires, emphasising the importance of sound selection of rams and of adequate genetic sampling in breed comparisons.  相似文献

One hundred eighty-nine Corriedale ewes were used during the non-breeding season to study the "ram effect" stimulus after priming with progestogens. Intravaginal sponges containing either medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP group, n = 49), fluorogestone acetate (FGA group, n = 49), or progesterone devices (CIDR group, n = 46) were inserted on Day-6 (Day 0 = introduction of the rams). Forty-five ewes were untreated and kept as a control group. On Day 0 the sponges were removed and rams provided with marking harnesses for oestrous detection were placed with the ewes. Onset of estrus was monitored until Day 25, and conception was determined by transrectal ultrasonography. Ewes came into heat during 4 periods: Days 0-3, 5-7, 17-20, and 21-23. The overall number of oestrus ewes were 29%, 53%, 35%, and 50% for the control, MAP, FGA, and CIDR groups, respectively (MAP and CIDR > control, p < 0.05). Control ewes presented oestrus only on Days 17-20 and 21-23. Oestrus in the progestogen-primed ewes was concentrated during Days 0-3 and 17-20, and some ewes came into oestrus on Days 5-7. There were no differences between different primings neither in oestrous response nor in conception rate. The conception rate from matings occurring on Days 0-3 was higher than on those occurring on Days 17-20. We conclude that MAP, FGA, and CIDR is equally effective in improving the response to the ram effect, and the pattern of oestrus in primed ewes was different than previously reported.  相似文献

Suffolk x Rambouillet ewes were used in two consecutive years to test the ability of Dorset and Suffolk yearling rams to stimulate ovulation and estrus in early summer (late June and July) breeding. After spring weaning about June 1, ewes were randomly divided into three groups and for 2 wk either were isolated from rams or were preexposed to either yearling Dorset or Suffolk rams by penning of rams in proximity to ewes. Ewes then were rerandomized into two groups for joining with either yearling Dorset or Suffolk rams fitted with marking harnesses. Serum progesterone profiles and crayon marks were used as indicators of ovulation and estrus. Overall lambing rate was not different among preexposure treatments for the 2 yr. However, early lambing rate (in the first 14 d of lambing season) was significantly affected by preexposure group (24% for Dorset vs 9% for Suffolk and 10% for isolation), especially in the 2nd yr (31% for Dorset vs 8% for both Suffolk and isolation). Ewes preexposed to Dorsets also lambed 10 d earlier (P less than .05) than ewes preexposed to Suffolks in yr 2, but the groups did not differ in yr 1. Ewes exposed to Dorset rams for breeding had higher overall lambing rates than ewes bred to Suffolks (75% vs 54%), especially in the 1st yr (77% vs 48%). Lambs sired by Dorset rams were born 6 d earlier in yr 1 (P less than .05) but only 1 d earlier in yr 2. Data from both years indicate that Dorsets are superior to Suffolks in ability to sire lambs in fall lambing systems.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effect of crutching, simulated shearing and conventional shearing in mid-pregnancy on maternal plasma cortisol levels and lamb live weight and body dimensions at birth. Twin-bearing Romney ewes (n = 96) were subjected to one of four treatments (control, crutched, sham shorn and shorn) on day 80 of pregnancy. Ewes were maintained as a single flock throughout pregnancy under commercial farming conditions. Within 12 h of birth the lambs were weighed and their body dimensions recorded. Lambs born to ewes shorn in mid-pregnancy were heavier (P < 0.05) at birth than lambs born to control or sham-shorn ewes by 300 and 400 g (7 and 10%) respectively. The birth weight of lambs born to crutched and control ewes did not differ. Shearing and crutching produced a greater integrated cortisol response than sham-shearing (P < 0.05). The failure of crutching to increase lamb birth weight suggests that the acute stress caused by shearing does not result in increased lamb birth weights.  相似文献

SUMMARY Of 87 Dorset ewes injected at 20 to 60 days of pregnancy with either 125 μg or 250 μg of the prostaglandin F analogue, cloprostenol, 72 (83%) were detected in oestrus by teaser rams within 7 days. A total of 60 ewes mated with fertile rams 14 to 28 days after treatment and 36 of these (60%) subsequently lambed. Thirty-eight ewes mated with fertile rams 29 to 56 days after treatment and 30 of these (79%) subsequently lambed. The difference in fertility between the 2 periods was not significant.
Six additional ewes which did not respond to the cloprostenol lambed normally within 6 weeks. They were more than 100 days pregnant when treated.
In ewes which first exhibited oestrus by 7 days of treatment, plasma progesterone concentrations fell from near 4 ng/ml to 0.6 ng/ml within 48 h of treatment. In ewes not detected in oestrus progesterone concentrations did not decrease to similar low levels (1.4 ng/ml; t-test p < 0.005). Concentrations in the 6 ewes treated near 100 days of pregnancy dropped from 7.4 to 4.4 ng/ml over 48 h. Overall, the progesterone concentrations indicated that 92% of ewes treated at 20 to 60 days of pregnancy experienced rapid luteolysis in response to the cloprostenol.
There were no differences between the 2 doses of cloprostenol in the responses or subsequent fertility of the ewes.  相似文献

A series of 10 farm trials was conducted in which the lambing performance of ewes immunised against polyandroalbumin was compared with that of untreated ewes in the same flock. The trials show that polyandroalbumin treatment is a reliable method of increasing lambing and tailing percentages in New Zealand flocks. An average of 39 extra lambs born per 100 ewes tupped was achieved on farms where ewes were given two treatments about four weeks apart and rams were introduced 18–26 days after the second dose. On farms where rams were introduced less than 12 days after this booster injection an average of 19 extra lambs born per 100 ewes tupped resulted.

On farms where rams were introduced at 18–26 days post booster injection an average of 35 extra lambs were tailed for every 100 ewes tupped.

The response for immunization increased in direct relation to the liveweight of the ewes at tupping.  相似文献

A total of 399 crossbred ewes born in 2 yr were maintained either on irrigated or dryland hill pastures. The ewes were sired by North Country Cheviot, Dorset, Finnsheep or Romney rams mated to Suffolk or Columbia-type ewes. The crossbred ewes were mated to Hampshire rams throughout the study and had the opportunity for either 4 or 5 yr of production. Annual feed cost was calculated based upon estimated annual metabolizable energy (ME) requirements for maintenance, ewe growth, pregnancy and lactation. Income from weaned feeder lambs and from orphan lambs sold shortly after birth, feed cost and net revenue were analyzed during each ewe's first production year, as well as for the entire period of the experiment. Crossbred group significantly affected income from lambs produced, feed cost and net revenue for the ewes' first production year. Crossbred group and crossbred group X management system interactions generally influenced lifetime income from lambs produced and from orphans sold, gross income, total cost and net revenue per ewe. Finnsheep X Suffolk ewes performed best on irrigated pastures but were below average for lifetime net revenue on hill pastures. Finnsheep X Columbia ewes performed best on hill pastures and, with Dorset X Suffolk and Dorset X Columbia ewes, were well above average for lifetime net revenue on irrigated pastures as well. Suffolk crossbreds consistently performed better on irrigated than on hill pastures. While most ewes with Columbia-type inheritance were more efficient on hill than on irrigated pastures, this result was not always consistent.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare rebreeding activities of spring- vs fall-lambing Polypay, Dorset, St. Croix and Targhee ewes that either suckled their lambs for 40 d or had lambs weaned at birth. Seasonal effects of male fertility were reduced by utilizing an excess number of fertile rams in the spring. Plasma concentrations of progesterone were monitored to assess days to the first normal ovulation, days to conception and estrous vs anestrous activity. Breed, season and lactation affected the rebreeding performance. Dorset ewes had similar conception rates between spring and fall but a shorter interval from lambing to first ovulation in the fall. Polypay and Targhee ewes were the opposite; they had higher conception rates in fall than in spring matings with no seasonal influence on postpartum interval. Postpartum ewes in the fall had higher conception rates, and fewer of these ewes became anestrous or had estrous cycles of abnormal duration than of those ewes lambing in the spring. Ewes that suckled for 40 d in the spring had delayed estrous activity, but when these ewes became estrual they had higher conception rates than ewes whose lambs were weaned at birth. Lactation had no inhibitory affect on the postpartum interval of fall lambing ewes. These data suggest that the response of different breeds to various components of postpartum fertility varies with season and management of the flock.  相似文献
