Mr. President, I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for inviting me to address your Association this morning. Before commencing on my subject, I wish to pay tribute to your profession. The pathways of our professions have met on many occasions during the centuries we have practised our respective arts and sciences. Both professions have contributed in no mean way to the advancement of the other, and symbiotically we have advanced to the greater benefit of mankind as a whole.  相似文献

In order to run a small business effectively you must be in financial control and this means that you have to be aware how the business is performing. If you wait until your accountant has got out the annual accounts valuable time has been wasted in making necessary decisions and corrections to poor trends in your business so monthly/quarterly records are required. Decisions as to whether you can afford to take another assistant, set up a branch surgery, the level of your fee increases, whether to buy or lease your cars; are all dependent on having available up to date financial knowledge of your business. If you have a microcomputer in the practice you can use spreadsheets which will allow the accurate prediction of cash flow or profitability. You can also ask the question 'what happens if...?' and get the answer in seconds. But even without a computer, financial control can be easily maintained if you are prepared to spend a couple of hours each month with your practice figures.  相似文献

In summary, therefore, my experiences as a witness have been divided into three major areas. In the first, in what was essentially the political process, the game was charge and counter-charge, and the rules, such as they were, were fairly loose. In the second area, that of administrative hearings, the rulesare somewhat tighter, but still not as restrictive as those of a full court session. In court session you are always sworn, carefully qualified as an expert and almost invariably subjected to searching cross- examination. The rules of evidence are strictly adhered to. This is the situation where your freedom of action is most restricted, and is the most rigorous of the situations in which you will use your expertise. However, in the last analysis, you should remember that all that is required of you are simple statements of fact, and your best opinions. Make your statements simple, consistent, and concise, and keep your answers on cross-examination as short as possible.Expert appearances under any of these conditions are very stressful circumstances. They will absorb your attention entirely for some time before you make your appearance. You will feel totally drained after them, and images from the hearing will reverberate in your mind for days. They are, nevertheless, ultimately satisfying experiences. This is because the only measure of the quality of your research is how much it changes the way things are done. Appearances as an expert are a sure sign that you are contributing to change, and speak the significance of your expertise.  相似文献

I am very proud and pleased to be in this very room tonight to deliver the Second Annual Mark Allam Lecture. I take it to be a great honor that you invited a member of a sister profession rather than one from your own ranks to give this lecture. You will recall last year on this occasion Dean Armistead prophesized that M.D.'s and D.V.M.'s would come closer together. I hope that my presence here tonight is a good omen for that very worthwhile goal.  相似文献

Have you made the decision to sell your veterinary practice and enter a new stage of lifé If so, the next big question is how do you maximise the sale price and minimise your capital gains tax. of such points and potentially bring them up to the standard of the rest of your business. For example is your store or practice in need of a refit? Do you need to update equipment, train staff or review stock choices?  相似文献

Starting a dairy veterinary practice is a challenging and rewarding experience. A considerable amount of time spent in planning is required before attempting to actually start a new practice. Changing or expanding an existing practice also demands planning and foresight. The natural progression is similar for starting a new practice or for changing an existing one: Record your personal and business goals, inform your clients or prospective clients of the services you plan to offer, and then promote the ways in which these services can benefit clients. In starting a new practice or offering a new service, think both of how to get clients to utilize your services and how to organize your practice into a profitable business. The process of starting a practice or changing one is sometimes slow. Patience and persistence during this process will help develop the practice to meet your goals. The use of new ideas and imagination in combination with a commitment to see these ideas put into action will ensure that you are developing a dairy practice that will be viable for the livestock industry now and in the future.  相似文献

Like preparing for intricate surgery, successful staffing requires preparation, mastery of the subject matter, and skill. The employees who work in veterinary practices form the basis of the business and reflect the owners' own values. Giving attention to what you want your practice to be, whom you want working with you, and how the environment keeps the staff productive matters. Identifying the right culture, hiring people who find congruence with the practice's culture, and consistently applying these principles will help your practice soar to new heights.  相似文献

In this talk I shall be dealing with two quite distinct groups of people who find common ground in some 40,000,000 humble animals—the sheep and cattle populations of New Zealand. You, as practising veterinarians form the first group, and your prime concern is the health (or, if you prefer it, the diseases) of these two species. The second is composed of what, for want of a better term, I shall call pasture workers, and it is concerned, directly or indirectly, with the provision of feed for those same domestic animals. The name is chosen because, under New Zealand conditions, “feed” and “pasture herbage” are virtually synonymous terms.  相似文献

The honour of being President gives one the opportunity of repaying the Association and the profession for the right to practise veterinary science in an environment which they have helped to create. It also gives the President the opportunity of a close association with other groups of people who are directly associated with our profession for it has been said that no man is an island and this is exceptionally so as far as the veterinary profession is concerned. While we are individuals, some more so than others, it is only as a cohesive organization that we can survive and progress. It is sometimes forgotten that the President and Council of the Association are elected by veterinarians, to make decisions on behalf of the veterinary profession. It is sometimes forgotten that the President and Council of the New Zealand Veterinary Association are veterinarians who are affected by decisions made, just as much as any colleague. To make a decision is to invite criticism; time will prove many decisions to be wrong, but there is a great satisfaction when a decision made proves to be the right one. I believe that a correct decision made is progress and this is the subject that I choose to discuss with you. I could talk about the past but that was yesterday and it is argued that there is no guidance in the past, for the problems of the future. I could talk about the future, but the future is tomorrow, so I will confine myself to the present and the problems associated with making progress in our present environment. I have said that the Veterinary Association is not an island, that its future, present and past are intricately tied to the farming endeavour of New Zealand as are many other organizations. I have had the, pleasure over the last 18 months of sitting on a ministerial committee called “The Committee of Veterinary Development”. As many will know, this committee was established at the request of the New Zealand Veterinary Association. Of major concern to us was the representations on this committee, for it consisted of administrative officers of the Department of Agriculture, Federated Farmers, the New Zealand Veterinary Association, and an independent chairman.  相似文献

Madam:—Last year, the Executive Board of the International Veterinary Academy on Disaster Medicine (IVADM) asked for Dr L. Stipkovits, Budapest, to convene a meeting of the veterinarians participating in the 5th International Congress of Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. About 20 veterinarians met (Dr Jack Lawrence, Freeport, New York attended from the USA), and drafted the following appeal to all veterinarians of the world, and asked that it be published in the veterinary press worldwide. The Directors of the IVADM have approved the statement. They respectfully request that you print it for consideration by your readers before the next meeting of the IVADM in Montreal during the 23rd World Veterinary Congress. Of course, your readers are cordially invited to attend and participate in the meeting. Thank you.  相似文献

There is a wealth of information available to you concerning the methods and means of making the hospital a safer place for yourself, employees and clients. In addition, a book could be devoted to the safety of the animal patients. Your insurance carrier can help you spot som potentially dangerous conditions and suggest ways in which you can make the changes necessary to bring your hospital up to safety standards. Remember, a good preventive program is one of the best defenses against litigation.  相似文献

I am extremely proud to receive the WAAVP/Pfizer Animal Health award, and particularly so in Africa, the continent where I have spent a large part of my professional life. In the nearly 40 years in research I have had the privilege and excitement of being involved with many great parasites, predators, places and people. In my early days in Kenya I saw all the great wild animal predators, but soon came to appreciate that the greatest predator of all was disease, particularly parasitic disease, with the devastating effects of tsetse and ticks and the infections they transmitted, and of the all-prevailing roundworms. I learned several key lessons while working with research teams to develop better diagnostics, to improve epidemiological understanding as a basis for rational treatment and control, and to extend the understanding of disease processes with the view to developing novel methods of treatment or prevention. The Power of Pathology in diagnosing diseases, identifying new diseases and as a major tool for pathogenic diseases. The Power of Pathogenesis in identifying key mechanisms that led to new diagnostic techniques, improved methods of treatment, and possibly to future vaccines. The Power of Application of what we already know; while recognising that molecular biology will make a massive contribution to improving animal and human health, it is important to appreciate that we already have a very powerful armamentaria to diagnose, treat, control or prevent disease, and when used properly they have been successful and cost-effective. The Power of Genetic Resistance: the recognition that certain species, certain breeds, and certain individuals within breeds possess remarkable resistance to certain parasitic diseases such as trypanosomosis and helminthosis, and that this trait is genetically correlated with production, opens up a very powerful additional approach to improving animal health. The Importance of Measurement: I completely endorse the sentiments of Lord Kelvin, Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University who stated in 1846: "When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it: but when you cannot measure it, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind." This applies very much to Parasitology. The future is bright. The combination and integration of the new technologies of Biotechnology, Mathematical Methods and Bioinformatics coupled with advances in Computer Power will produce new standards in animal and human health in the 21st century. New methods of predicting, diagnosis, treating, controlling, prognosing and preventing disease will become available. WAAVP has a major role to play by ensuring that veterinary parasitologists are provided with the proper training, infrastructure and forum to advance new technologies and that the veterinary profession plays a leading role in the future direction they take.  相似文献

Adequate radiographic evaluation of the horse relevant to purchase examination requires the successful integration of technique, interpretation, and reporting. A thorough knowledge of lameness and disease can be masked by incorrect interpretation resulting from poor-quality films or an incomplete examination. Thus, care must be taken to produce an adequate number of high-quality films on which to base a report, which allows you to describe changes that are present. This information, coupled with your physical examination, other laboratory data, and the knowledge of the expressed use of the horse will allow you to advise prospective owners on the decision that they will ultimately make.  相似文献

Suppose one of your clients from southern Florida starts talking about cattle egrets while you are vaccinating her cat. It seems she found a nearly dead egret near the cattle pen a few days ago, picked it up, and noticed a number of what looked like small ticks on the legs. Or, suppose you are called out to a small dairy in central Texas to look at some cows that are feverish and anemic. The first animal you examine has a few brown ticks attached just under the tail. Finally, perhaps you are looking at a lame tortoise for a reptile fancier, a new client, and find a large, colorful tick on a hind leg, well up under the shell. Ring any bells? Egrets are great hosts for the immature stages of Amblyomma ticks and have been captured and marked in the eastern Caribbean, then recaptured in the Florida Keys. Those cattle ticks in Texas might be acaricide-resistant Boophilus ticks that originated in Mexico. The Amblyomma tick on the tortoise could well have "hitch-hiked" all the way from South Africa. By now you remember that both Amblyomma and Boophilus ticks are efficient vectors of two tickborne diseases in this hemisphere, heartwater (in the case of Amblyomma) and babesiosis (transmitted by Boophilus ticks). Both of these diseases are exotic to the United States, and because our livestock are considered to be totally susceptible, an introduced infection could result in high initial death losses (approximately 70%); thus, both the ticks and the diseases pose immediate threats to the health and economic security of United States animal industries. Most importantly, you, whether as a small animal or large animal practitioner, are the first line of defense against such exotic diseases and their vectors.  相似文献
