The development of saltwater tolerance was studied in chum fry reared in the Malkinsky hatchery (central Kamchatka, 200 km from the Sea of Okhotsk). Hypo-osmoregulatory ability of fry was assessed by dynamics of plasma sodium concentration, 24 and 48 h after their transfer from fresh water to seawater (30%o), and by fry survival in seawater of 40%o salinity. Complete osmoregulation function in young chum was developed in seawater only in late June, despite their earlier development of silver body color and fairly high migration activity. No correlation was found between the weight of fish and their osmoregulatory abilities. The reasons for late smoltification of hatchery-reared chum have not yet been clearly defined. One explanation might be the combined effect of low nocturnal temperatures and considerable daily fluctuations in temperature (more than 8oC) during the period of egg incubation (in fall), as well as during smoltification of chum juveniles (spring-early summer). Data on the osmoregulatory ability of chum smolts could be useful in forecasting their survival in the early marine period of life.  相似文献

Mass production of rotifers is essential as live food during the larval rearing season, but a major problem of rotifer culture is unpredictable culture collapse. If mass‐produced rotifers could be kept alive at low temperature for an extended period of time, they could be supplied as live food to cultured marine fish larvae without interruption. Four experiments were performed to test this possibility in six strains of Brachionus plicatilis O. F. Müller and eight strains of Brachionus rotundiformis Tschugunoff. The results showed that: (1) B. rotundiformis strains were less tolerant to 4 °C than B. plicatilis strains. Among the B. rotundiformis strains, the strains known as SS type were the most susceptible and showed the lowest survival. (2) Exchange of culture media during the incubation at 4 °C in B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis resulted in higher survival than not changing the culture media, but there were no differences in the regression slope with or without changing the culture media. (3) Acclimation at 15 °C for 96 h for B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis before transfer to 4 °C resulted in higher survival rates than acclimation at 10 °C. (4) The combination of frequent exchange of culture media and acclimation significantly improved the survival of B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis compared with controls that were maintained at 4 °C without exchange of the culture media. Large‐scale trials using B. plicatilis (Kamiura strain) cultured in 30‐L tanks were conducted in a hatchery at a density of 2000–20 000 individuals mL?1. Rotifers were transferred directly from 25 °C to 4 °C. About 50% of the rotifers at 20 000 individuals mL?1 survived after 14 days at 4 °C. A critical component of many releasing projects is the identification and subsequent implementation of optimal release strategies that can decrease post-release predation mortalities. We performed laboratory experiments to investigate whether acclimation to shelters affects the post-release survival of hatchery-reared black-spot tuskfish Choerodon schoenleinii in the presence of a reef-resident predator, the white-streaked grouper Epinephelus ongus. Tuskfish were exposed to groupers under three different experimental conditions/treatments: (1) acclimation of fish to shelters prior to their exposure to groupers; (2) no acclimation of fish to shelters, but with shelters available during their exposure to groupers; (3) fish not acclimated to shelters and no shelters available during their exposure to groupers. Tuskfish that were acclimated to shelters utilized shelters more frequently than did non-acclimated fish, and the survival rate of acclimated fish was higher than those of fish in the other treatments. These results suggest that pre-release acclimation to shelters improves the post-release survival of hatchery-reared black-spot tuskfish.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Shrimp farmers in Alabama who produce the Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, have recently reported abnormally low survival at harvest. Farmers have hypothesized that this phenomenon may be due to disease, toxic algae, shrimp source, or reduced shrimp robustness in later stages of production. To compare performance of shrimp from different sources, postlarvae were obtained from three different hatcheries and stocked on the same day in on-levee tank systems (TS) on two farms (Farm 1-TS; Farm 2-TS1; Farm 2-TS2). Following 104 days of culture on Farm 2-TS1 and Farm 2-TS2, there were no differences in survival (72.8%–91.2%) or final weight (19.8–24.6 g). At Farm 1-TS following 107 days of culture, there were differences in survival from shrimp sourced from one hatchery (40.5%) compared to the other two hatcheries (61.0%–69.8%). Results demonstrated acceptable growth performance and survival from all hatchery sources.  相似文献

Fish gills are the vital multifunctional organ in direct contact with external environment. Therefore, activation of the cytoprotective mechanisms to maintain branchial cell viability is important for fish upon stresses. Salinity is one of the major factors strongly affecting cellular and organismal functions. Reduction of ambient salinity may occur in coral reef and leads to osmotic stress for reef-associated stenohaline fish. However, the physiological responses to salinity stress in reef-associated fish were not examined substantially. With this regard, the physiological parameters and the responses of protein quality control (PQC) and osmoregulatory mechanisms in gills of seawater (SW; 33–35 ‰)- and brackish water (BW; 20 ‰)-acclimated blue-green damselfish (Chromis viridis) were explored. The results showed that the examined physiological parameters were maintained within certain physiological ranges in C. viridis acclimated to different salinities. In PQC mechanism, expression of heat-shock protein (HSP) 90, 70, and 60 elevated in response to BW acclimation while the levels of ubiquitin-conjugated proteins were similar between the two groups. Thus, it was presumed that upregulation of HSPs was sufficient to prevent the accumulation of aggregated proteins for maintaining the protein quality and viability of gill cells when C. viridis were acclimated to BW. Moreover, gill Na+/K+-ATPase expression and protein amounts of basolaterally located Na+/K+/2Cl? cotransporter were higher in SW fish than in BW fish. Taken together, this study showed that the cytoprotective and osmoregulatory mechanisms of blue-green damselfish were functionally activated and modulated to withstand the challenge of reduction in salinity for maintaining physiological homeostasis.  相似文献

Thiodan® is an insecticide which can cause morphological changes in fish tissues, dependent on the concentration. To investigate possible morphological changes, this study evaluated the number and diameter of ovarian follicles in lambaris Astyanax bimaculatus exposed to Thiodan® for 96 h in different treatments at three sub‐lethal concentrations: 1.15, 2.3 and 5.6 μg L?1 and a control group without Thiodan®. Females exposed to Thiodan® were divided into four treatments: (i) without acclimation and without food, (ii) without acclimation and with food, (iii) with acclimation for 10 days and without food; (iv) with acclimation for 10 days and with food. In this study, it was noted that the action of Thiodan® at sub‐lethal concentrations in a static system did not affect the morphology of follicular development. However, the treatments with acclimation showed lower numbers of primary and secondary follicles when compared to fish from treatments without acclimation. For the groups exposed to Thiodan®, a greater number of atretic follicles were observed compared to the control groups. The follicular diameter of secondary follicles in fish exposed to Thiodan® in the treatment with acclimation and with food was highest in the control group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the mean gonadosomatic (GSI) and hepatosomatic (HSI) indices of treatments with acclimation were lower than those for treatments without acclimation. These data suggest that the fish may be being affected by the pesticide to which the fish were submitted, and may cause impairment to the follicular development.  相似文献

The relationship between release date and migration speed was examined for hatchery chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta fry exiting the Nishibetsu River in eastern Hokkaido, northern Japan so that future releases might be scheduled so that fry arrive at the ocean during periods favoring high survival. Separate marked groups of chum salmon released in early April, mid-April, and early May in 2008, late March and mid-April in 2009, and mid-April in 2010 were recaptured with a rotary screw trap 12 km above the river mouth. Chum salmon in later release groups tended to migrate downstream faster than fish in earlier release groups. Those released after mid-April arrived in the lower river on average 9 days after release, while those released before mid-April arrived on average 26–28 days after release. Most marked fish arrived in the lower river during late April to mid-May. These results suggest that chum salmon are adapted to adjust their migratory speed so as to arrive at the ocean during a relatively discrete period, presumably during a time of high productivity favoring good survival.  相似文献

The lower lethal temperature of the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow, Hybognathus amarus, was estimated from survival rates of fish overwintered in above-ground tanks. Temperature went to 0.0°C both winters. In 2012–2013, survival of Age class 0 fish was 79.87%, and in 2013–2014, survival of Age class 1 fish was 97.1%, suggesting that if Rio Grande silvery minnow is subjected to seasonal temperature changes, lower lethal temperature is ≤0.0°C. Results show that heating hatchery water in the winter is unnecessary. Additionally, current management guidelines that preclude reintroduction of the species into river sections where winter temperatures are ≤1°C must be reevaluated.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to elucidate the osmoregulatory ability of the fish pearl spot (Etroplus suratensis) to know the scope of this species for aquaculture under various salinities. Juvenile pearl spot were divided into three groups and acclimated to freshwater (FW), brackish water (BW) or seawater (SW) for 15 days. The fish exhibited effective salinity tolerance under osmotic challenges. Although the plasma osmolality and Na+, K+ and Cl? levels increased with the increasing salinities, the parameters remained within the physiological range. The muscle water contents were constant among FW-, BW- and SW-acclimated fish. Two Na+/K+-ATPase α-isoforms (NKA α) were expressed in gills during acclimation in FW, BW and SW. Abundance of one isoform was up-regulated in response to seawater acclimation, suggesting its role in ion secretion similar to NKA α1b, while expression of another isoform was simultaneously up-regulated in response to both FW and SW acclimation, suggesting the presence of isoforms switching phenomenon during acclimation to different salinities. Nevertheless, NKA enzyme activities in the gills of the SW and FW individuals were higher (p < 0.05) than in BW counterparts. Immunohistochemistry revealed that Na+/K+-ATPase immunoreactive (NKA-IR) cells were mainly distributed in the interlamellar region of the gill filaments in FW groups and in the apical portion of the filaments in BW and SW groups. The number of NKA-IR cells in the gills of the FW-acclimated fish was almost similar to that of SW individuals, which exceeded that of the BW individuals. The NKA-IR cells of BW and SW were bigger in size than their FW counterparts. Besides, the relative abundance of branchial Na+/K+/2Cl? co-transporter showed stronger evidence in favor of involvement of this protein in hypo-osmoregulation, requiring ion secretion by the chloride cells. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study reporting the wide salinity tolerance of E. suratensis involving differential activation of ion transporters and thereby suggesting its potential as candidate for fish farming under different external salinities.  相似文献

This research, which is part of a larger study designed to assess the feasibility of winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus, stock enhancement in New Hampshire, identifies hatchery feeds that optimize feeding‐related performance of fish once released in the wild. Fish reared on post‐nauplii of brine shrimp, Artemia sp., white worms, Enchytraeus albidus, common burrower amphipods, Leptocheirus plumulosus, and formulated pellets were evaluated post‐release from in situ cages using survival, growth rate, feeding onset and incidence, stomach fullness, diet composition, and nucleic acid‐based condition as indicators of hatchery diet suitability. Amphipod‐reared fish had the highest mean stomach content index of all feed types, including wild fish. Wild and worm‐reared fish exhibited the most similar survival, overall stomach fullness, and diet composition profiles over time. Amphipod‐reared fish ranked highest in overall performance; however, if wild fish performance is viewed as the ideal for a stocked fish, worm‐reared fish performed optimally. This study describes hatchery feeding strategies that may ease the transition of flatfish released into the wild for stock enhancement.  相似文献

Abiotic factors like salinity are relevant to survival of pelagic fishes of the San Francisco Bay Estuary. We tested the effects of 4 parts per thousand (ppt) salinity increases on Delta Smelt (DS) in a laboratory experiment simulating salinity increases that might occur around the low-salinity zone (LSZ) (<6 ppt). Adult DS, fed 2 % body mass per day, starting at 0.5 ppt [freshwater (FW)], were exposed to weekly step-increases of 4 ppt to a maximum of 10 ppt saltwater (SW) over 19 days, and compared to FW controls. DS (n = 12/treatment per sampling) were sampled at 24, 72, and 96 h (1, 3, and 4 days) post-salinity increase for analyses of hematocrit, plasma osmolality, muscle water content, gill chloride cell (CC) Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) and apoptosis after being weighed and measured (n = 3 tanks per treatment). No apparent increase in length or weight occurred nor did a difference in survival. Following step-increases in SW, hematocrit increased over time. Other fish responses generally showed a pattern; specifically plasma osmolality became elevated at 1 day and diminished over 4 days in SW. Percent muscle water content (%) did not show significant changes. CCs showed increased NKA, cell size and apoptosis over time in SW, indicating that CCs turnover in DS. The cell renewal process takes days, at least over 19 days. In summary, DS are affected by salinities of the LSZ and ≤10 ppt, though they employ physiological strategies to acclimate.  相似文献

Abstract –  We compared the growth and prey consumption of juvenile hatchery and wild brown trout of similar genetic origin in 12 wire mesh cages in a natural river in North-Eastern Finland. Wild trout started feeding shortly after the start of the experiment, and clearly earlier than novel hatchery trout, but ate less in the presence of hatchery trout. When accompanied with wild trout, novel hatchery trout started to feed earlier, consumed more live prey, and lost less weight than when in allopatry. Hatchery trout grew more slowly than wild trout. To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that hatchery trout benefit from the presence of wild, experienced trout in a complex semi-natural environment. However, our results also indicate that the benefits to hatchery fish are not transferred to wild fish, and ultimately that care should be exercised in management actions when using hatchery trout to supplement wild populations. On the other hand survival potential of the novel hatchery brown trout could be better in the wild when also undomesticated trout are present.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of some immunostimulants and probiotics on the survival rate, final weight, and disease resistance of overwintered tilapia fry. There were five treatments: T1 (control) fed a balanced diet (35% protein) without additives. Treatments 2 to 5 were fed diets supplemented with 4% garlic, 4 g/kg Echinacea, 4 g/kg Organic Green or 4 g/kg Vet-Yeast, respectively. Growth and resistance to disease challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas flourescens were not different among treatments, but survival of overwintered fry increased in treatments fed probiotics or immunostimulents. The use of garlic in overwintering feeds could allow hatchery operators to increase their prices for fry and fish farmers to stock production ponds earlier, increasing hatchery revenues by 74% and improving land use efficiency and productivity for the Egyptian aquaculture industry.  相似文献

We examined differences in otolith oxygen (δ18Ootolith) and carbon (δ13Cotolith) stable isotope ratios between hatchery and wild pink salmon fry. The δ18Ootolith values of hatchery and wild fry were ?7.7 ± 0.2 ‰ and ?8.3 ± 0.3 ‰ (1σ), respectively. This difference reflected differences in temperature conditions experienced by each fry. The δ13Cotolith values of hatchery and wild fry were ?19.2 ± 0.3 ‰ and ?11.1 ± 1.8 ‰ (1σ), respectively. The lower δ13Cotolith values of hatchery fry were probably related to their intake of artificial diets. Discriminant analysis of δ18Ootolith and δ13Cotolith values demonstrated a highly significant difference between hatchery and wild fry with 95.8 % classification accuracy. Therefore, analysis of δ18Ootolith and δ13Cotolith precipitated in the fry stage may be useful for discriminating the origin of returning adult pink salmon. The discrimination method for returning adult fish would provide important information for evaluating the effect of hatchery release and their impact on the wild population.  相似文献

Predation after release is one of the major concerns of hatchery fish propagation. However, size-specific interaction between predator and prey on the survival of hatchery-released salmonid fish is largely unknown. To understand the size-selective predation risk, 24-h predation experiments were conducted on masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou in tanks. Four ranges of fork length (FL) were examined for masu salmon as a prey, in combination with three ranges of FL for white-spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis as a predator. The results show that not only predator and prey sizes, but also interaction between prey size and predator size, strongly affected the survival rate of masu salmon. Predation on masu salmon with the FL exceeding 40% of the FL of white-spotted charr was rare in the experiment. A logistic regression suggests that 37% relative FL of masu salmon to white-spotted charr results in the 50% survival of masu salmon. Our results suggest that adjusting relative size of hatchery fish to the size of local fish predators at the time of hatchery release will have a significant impact on the survival of hatchery fish in the wild. From this perspective, site-specific, adaptive management might be important to improve the effectiveness of hatchery fish propagation.  相似文献

The freshwater African catfish Clarias gariepinus is carnivorous and cannibalistic even during the larval and juvenile stages and this behavior causes economic losses in aquaculture. This study examined for the first time the effect of salinity on cannibalism, survival, and growth of African catfish larvae in the hatchery. Larvae (4 days old, median 7.8 mm TL, 2.8 mg BW) of the African catfish were reared for 21 days at nominal salinity 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 ppt. After 21 days, they grew to 10–39 mm (median 22 mm) and 10–490 mg (median 90 mg), with no significant difference by salinity treatments. Survival ratios were similarly low (24–31%) at 0, 1, 3, and 7 ppt and significantly higher (49–55%) at 2, 4, 5, and 6 ppt. Cannibalism was significantly lower, 15–30% at 4–6 ppt, than the 40–50% at 0–3 and 7 ppt. Size variation was lower at 4–6 ppt and higher at 0–3 and 7 ppt. We recommend hatchery rearing of African catfish at the optimum low salinity of 4–6 ppt rather than in full fresh water at least up to 21 days. This rearing method fosters larval welfare and improves hatchery production.  相似文献

The effects of acclimation temperature and acute temperature change on the uptake and metabolism of the procarcinogen benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) by gill cells of the gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta, were examined. BaP was rapidly accumulated by isolated gill cells and uptake rates were directly proportional to BaP concentration in the medium (1 to 100 μg/ml). Uptake rates were higher in cells isolated from fish acclimated to 18°C when compared to cells from 28°C acclimated fish at all incubation temperatures. When cells were exposed to BaP at the respective acclimation temperatures of the fish, uptake rates were similar (0.14 ± 0.01 at 18°C and 0.12 ± 0.01 μg BaP/s/10 mg cells at 28°C). This finding is discussed in view of results which showed a partial compensation of membrane fluidity in plasma membranes isolated from fish from the two acclimation temperatures. At higher incubation temperatures, cells from fish acclimated to 18°C metabolized BaP at a greater rate than those at 28°C (49.6 ± 1.92 and 43.0 ± 2.24 μg/g/8h, respectively, at 23°C). Low but detectable activities of common biotransformation enzymes (aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase, glutathione-S-transferase) and cytochrome P-450 content were found, however, no significant differences were evident between cells from fish acclimated to different temperatures. Respiratory parameters of grass carp were studied during dissolved oxygen (DO) changes from normal DO to hypoxia, then return to normal DO at 15, 25, and 30 °C acclimation, respectively. The results showed that with increases of acclimation temperature at normoxia the respiratory frequency (fR), oxygen consumption rate (VO2), respiratory stroke volume (VS.R), gill ventilation (VG), and VG/VO2 of grass carp increased significantly, but the oxygen extraction efficiency (EO2) of fish decreased significantly (P < 0.05). With declines of DO levels, the fR, VS.R, VG, and VG/VO2 of fish increased significantly at different acclimation temperatures (P < 0.05). A slight increase was found in VO2, and the EO2 of fish remained almost constant above DO levels of 3.09, 2.91, and 2.54 mg l?1 at 15, 25, and 30 °C, while the VO2 and EO2 began to decrease significantly with further reductions in DO levels (P < 0.05). After 0.5 h of recovery to normoxia from hypoxia at three acclimation, the fR, VS.R, VG, and VG/VO2 of the fish decreased sharply; meanwhile, the VO2 and EO2 increased sharply (P < 0.05). The respiratory parameters of fish gradually approached initial values with prolonged recovery time to normoxia, and reached their initial values in 2.5 h at 25 and 30 °C acclimation. The critical oxygen concentrations (Cc) of fish for VO2 were 2.42 mg l?1 at 15 °C, 2.02 mg l?1 at 25 °C, and 1.84 mg l?1 at 30 °C, respectively.
