Fertilization of ultraviolet (UV) irradiated oocytes of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), with sperm from O, niloticus or blue tilapia, O, aureus (Steindachner), and subsequent suppression of the first cleavage of fertilized eggs successfully induced androgenesis in Nile and blue tilapia. The optimal doses of UV irradiation to denucleate a female genome of Nile tilapia prior to androgenesis ranged from 5940 to 6930 erg mm?2 for 54-63 s at a fixed intensity of 110 erg mm?2 s?1. Putative androgenetic fish were created from eggs which were irradiated at various times and several durations of heat-shock. Eggs which were treated for 5 min at 41.6 oC at 2 7.5 min after fertilization were the most successful at suppressing the first cleavage and producing viable androgenetic diploids in Nile or hybrid Nile X blue tilapia. The maximal survivals of putative androgenetic diploids in relation to the control were 1.60% and 0.90% in Nile and hybrid Nile X blue tilapia, respectively. The androgenetic offspring established exhibited active feeding and normal growth.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the seminal characteristics of Nile tilapia males exposed to water‐borne 17α,20β‐dihydroxy‐4‐pregnen‐3‐one (17,20βP). Male Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) were exposed to the steroidal pre‐ovulatory pheromone 17,20βP, added to water at a concentration of 5×10?9 M. The pheromone‐exposed males had higher sperm volume and concentration. In addition, the spermatozoa contained in the sperm had higher motility and the motility duration was longer than ethanol‐exposed males (control group). The percentage of live spermatozoa was not affected by the treatments. Our results suggest that this pheromone can improve sperm quality characteristics and could become a non‐invasive method for enhancing spawning in Nile tilapia.  相似文献

Although non‐native species can modify ecosystem function, their effects in southern China have not been investigated, despite their ecological importance. This study assessed how Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) invasions impact the functional patterns of fish communities in the large subtropical Pearl River by analysing the relationships between invasion and body size over a 9‐year period. The relative abundance of Nile tilapia increased significantly over time. In particular, the established Nile tilapia significantly undermined the relative densities and the body size of the native fishes. Importantly, this study provided empirical evidence that functional indices (such as body size) are more sensitive when evaluating the effects of non‐native species on a community than richness. Understanding processes such as those should be the basis of controlling alien fish species and fisheries management in the Pearl River.  相似文献

A simulation model for the production of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus niloticus L.) for mixed‐ or mono‐sex culture and for poly‐culture with the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822) or African snakehead (Parachanna obscura Günther 1861) is presented. The model is based on an exponential decay model used in population dynamics and follows an individual‐based approach. The model consists of a tilapia sub‐model representing population dynamics, growth and recruitment and a predator sub‐model representing the predation process and population dynamics and growth of the used predator. The model was calibrated with data on mixed‐ or mono‐sex culture of Nile tilapia and for poly‐culture with the African catfish or African snakehead obtained in Congo Brazzaville and validated with similar data from the Philippines, Thailand and the Ivory Coast. The model visualized major underlying processes in tilapia farming and aspects for further improvement of the model; growth is one of the most sensitive input parameters and should be quantitatively related to feeding level and feed quality; length at first maturity and quantification of the recruitment of Nile tilapia has a relatively large influence and recruitment should be related to the length of the females; prey–predator relations are too coarse and should be more fine‐tuned with the relation between prey size and predator size. Incorporation of these features would provide the basis of a model that can serve as a predictive and decision‐making support tool.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplemental taurine on reproductive performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) broodstock fed soybean meal‐based diets. Four isonitrogenous (350 g kg?1 protein), isocaloric (18 MJ kg?1) diets were formulated to contain 0, 5, 10 and 15 g kg?1 taurine. The diets were fed to triplicate groups of juvenile Nile tilapia (10–15 g average body weight) at a female: male ratio of 3 : 1, to apparent satiation, three times per day for 130 days. The size at first maturation decreased with increasing dietary taurine to 10 g kg?1 and levelled off with further taurine supplementation. The time to first spawning was also significantly shorter at 10 g kg?1 taurine level. Spawning performances, including spawning frequencies, total number of spawnings per tank, number of spawnings per female and absolute fecundity, were all significantly improved with increasing dietary taurine up to 10 g kg?1. However, the quadratic regression analyses indicated that the maximum spawning performance occurred at 8 g kg?1 of supplemental taurine. Eggs produced from broodstock fed 10 g kg?1 taurine exhibited significantly higher hatchability and required shorter time for hatching and yolk‐sac absorption and also resulted in higher larval weight than at other dietary taurine levels. The highest egg protein, total amino acids and taurine were also obtained at 10 g kg?1 taurine. These results suggest that 8 g kg?1 dietary taurine is required for optimum reproductive outputs of Nile tilapia broodstock.  相似文献

Abstract Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), has been introduced in most tropical and subtropical regions of the world to improve inland fisheries and aquaculture. This species is generally viewed as beneficial where introduced, but the environmental impacts of its widespread introductions are uncertain and not well understood. In this study, a 30‐year time series of fisheries records from a tropical reservoir was divided into five equal periods of 6 years and compared. The introduction of Nile tilapia did not increase the total catch‐per‐unit‐of‐effort (CPUE), the number of fishers actively fishing or their per capita income. Conversely, a significant reduction in the CPUE of other commercially important species was observed after the introduction of Nile tilapia in the reservoir. Although other factors cannot be rule out as possible explanations of the observed changes in the reservoir fisheries, the results are consistent with the hypothesis that these changes may have been caused, at least partially, by the introduction of the Nile tilapia.  相似文献

Growth of several genetically improved Nile tilapia (GIFT or Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia, FaST or Freshwater Aquaculture Center Selected Tilapia, SEAFDEC-selected) and domesticated red tilapia (BFS or Binangonan Freshwater Station, NIFI-red or National Inland Fisheries Institute red, HL or Hacienda Luisita) stocks were compared in controlled (tank) and uncontrolled farm conditions (lake-based cages) with unselected NIFI or Chitralada Nile tilapia as control. Specific growth rate differed significantly (P = 0.009) in tank-reared Nile tilapia stocks where GIFT grew best at 1.358%/day followed by FaST (1.307%/day), control stock NIFI (1.257%/day) and SEAFDEC-selected (1.202%/day). Genetic effect explained 84.4% of the variance in growth of Nile tilapia in tanks. Although Nile tilapia growth in cages followed the same trend where GIFT grew best at 1.570%/day, no significant stock differences (P = 0.479) were noted. Meanwhile, red tilapia reared in either tanks or cages showed no significant stock differences in terms of growth. However, survival of the red tilapia stocks in cages differed significantly with HL having the highest percentage survival at 93.3%. The different growth responses of the Nile tilapia stocks especially under controlled (tank) farm conditions were largely due to genetic factors (stock differences).Under uncontrolled farm conditions, environmental factors were generally observed to have also affected the survival and to some extent, the growth of Asian Nile and red tilapia stocks.  相似文献

Four different‐sized (390±3, 140±2, 40±2, 16±1 g) Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), stocked at the same biomass in timed pulse feeding chambers were provided 27–29°C water dominated by Microcystis (82%) and Scenedesmus (18%) to determine the effect of fish size on filtration rates. The number of Microcystis and Scenedesmus units filtered from the water decreased significantly with increasing tilapia size. The shaping constants and maximum filtration rates for Ivlev's feeding model used to describe the relation between filtration rates and the suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations were significantly different among the four sizes. Filtration rates of 763, 671, 512 and 300 mg C kg?1 h?1, which correspond to 70%, 82%, 86% and 90% saturation levels, were achieved at POC levels of 30, 32, 32 and 33 mg C L?1 for 16, 40, 140 and 390 g Nile tilapia respectively. Smaller tilapia achieved these rates at lower POC concentrations than larger tilapia.  相似文献

Five pond management strategies for Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus L. production were evaluated in 0.1‐ha earthen ponds in Egypt during a 145‐day production cycle. Pond management strategies developed by the Pond Dynamics/Aquaculture Collaborative Research Support Programme (PD/A CRSP) were compared with a traditional and a modified Egyptian pond management strategy. Young‐of‐year Nile (mixed‐sex or sex‐reversed) tilapia were stocked into ponds at 20 000 fish ha?1. Sex‐reversed tilapia were stocked into chemical fertilization, organic fertilization plus formulated feed and feed only treatment ponds, whereas mixed‐sex tilapia were stocked into organic fertilization plus formulated feed and chemical plus organic fertilization plus formulated feed treatment ponds. Nile tilapia yields ranged from 1274 to 2929 kg ha?1. Nile tilapia yields in organic fertilization plus formulated feed treatments were significantly greater than the yield from chemical fertilization ponds. PD/A CRSP pond management strategies did not produce significantly greater Nile tilapia yields than the traditional Egyptian system, but a larger percentage of harvested tilapia in the organic fertilization plus feed treatments were classified in the first and second class size categories compared with the traditional Egyptian system. Organic fertilization plus formulated feed pond management strategies had the highest net returns, average rate of return on capital and the highest margin between average price and break‐even prices to cover total variable costs or total costs.  相似文献

The photosynthetic activity of cyanobacteria (predominantly Microcystis spp.) after passage through the digestive tract of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) was determined by CCD fluorescence imaging, using slow complementary area approach, during a 4‐day cultivation of fish faeces in algal ZBB medium. The cyanobacteria colonies exhibited a 92–95% reduction in of activity (P<0.001) after passage through Nile tilapia, whereas there was a significant (P<0.01) stimulation of photosynthetic activity after passage through the silver carp gut.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of AQUI‐S®20E (10% eugenol) sedation on the survival and behaviour of yellow perch Perca flavescens (Mitchill) and Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus L. held in high loading densities. Fish were held in 0–300 mg L?1 AQUI‐S®20E (0–30 mg L?1 eugenol) for up to 10 h in static tanks. At 17°C, yellow perch held in 200 and 300 mg L?1 AQUI‐S®20E were lightly sedated for up to 7 h. Yellow perch at 200 and 300 mg L?1 AQUI‐S®20E also had >95% mean survival 7‐days post exposure using loading densities up to 360 g L?1. Nile tilapia were only sedated for ≤3 h in concentrations up to 300 mg L?1 at 22°C and had >90% mean survival at loading densities ≤480 g L?1. Ammonia in tanks increased significantly as loading density increased, but treatment with AQUI–S®20E did not reduce ammonia accumulation. Results suggest that AQUI–S®20E was effective to sedate yellow perch and Nile tilapia at high loading densities, but sedation varied with loading density and species.  相似文献

A comparison was made of some productive traits of Stirling Nile tilapia (wild type) (Oreochromis niloticus, Linnaeus) and red hybrid tilapia (Florida red tilapia× Stirling red O. niloticus) males during a 98‐day grow‐out period. Twenty‐two males from each genetic group with initial weights of 139.0 g for O. niloticus and 207.3 g for the red hybrid were placed in triplicate tanks. The fish were fed with a feed containing 36.8% crude protein. Survival was 97.0% for the red hybrid and 83.3% for O. niloticus. Daily individual weight gains were 2.95 and 2.50 g and final body weights were 473.0 and 348.8 g for the red hybrid and O. niloticus respectively. Fillet yield was similar for both the species, with 33.4% for the red hybrid and 32.0% for O. niloticus. Fresh fillet lipid content was perceptibly less in the red hybrid (0.33%) than in O. niloticus (2.07%). Some benefits of a red low‐fat tilapia genotype are discussed.  相似文献

Aquatic hypoxia can affect predator‐prey interactions by altering the success rate of the predator and/or the vulnerability of prey. For example, in the Lake Victoria basin of East Africa, native prey exploit hypoxic wetlands as refugia from predation by introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus). Here, it is predicted that species exploitation of wetlands depends on their hypoxia tolerance relative to the heterogeneity of wetland hypoxia. In this study, we compared the hypoxia tolerance of four fish taxa that differ in their use of hypoxic wetlands in Lake Nabugabo, Uganda: the cichlid Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae that inhabits the dense swamp interior; and three taxa that inhabit wetland ecotones including Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), L. niloticus and juvenile endemic haplochromine cichlids. We characterised hypoxia tolerance by exposing fish to progressive hypoxia and quantifying variation in aquatic surface respiration (ASR). The effect of body size on tolerance was explored in L. niloticus by quantifying ASR behaviour across a range of size classes. ASR behaviour was also compared between O. niloticus groups from wetland versus open‐water habitats to detect habitat‐associated intraspecific variation. The most tolerant taxon was the swamp specialist P. multicolor, indicated by its low ASR thresholds and small percentage of fish using ASR during the final sample interval. The other three taxa did not differ in ASR behaviour, and no differences were detected between O. niloticus groups. Body size effects were present for L. niloticus suggesting a lower tolerance to hypoxia in larger‐bodied individuals, thus limiting their ability to penetrate wetlands.  相似文献

Abstract

β-hydroxy-b-methylbutyrate (HMB), a leucine catabolite, has been shown to cause increased disease resistance and growth in animal production. A vaccine produced from formalin killed bacteria and concentrated extracellular products of the ARS-98-60 Streptococcus iniae isolate has been used for the prevention of streptococcal disease in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. In the present study, the effects of feeding HMB were determined in tilapia vaccinated by intraperitoneal (IP) injection of the S. iniaevaccine or unvaccinated (controls). Nile tilapia were fed diets containing either 0, 12.5, 25, or 50 mg HMB/kg diet for 14 days. The mean daily growth rate and feed efficiency showed no significant (P> 0.05) differences between the treatment groups. Dietary HMB supplementation did not enhance antibody production in unvacci-nated Nile tilapia following challenge. Dietary HMB supplementation did not enhance the survival of vaccinated Nile tilapia following challenge injection with 1 X108 CFU of S. iniae.  相似文献

The gustatory sensitivity of the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L., to different amino acids was studied using an electrophysiological approach. The electrical responses were recorded from a branch of the facial nerve innervating the external taste buds of the upper lip. The relative stimulatory effectiveness (RSE) of nine amino acids and betaine were determined at a concentration of 1 mm and all of them elicited neural responses. This species responded well to the neutral, basic and acidic amino acids. The most stimulatory amino acids were L‐histidine, L‐arginine, L‐serine, L‐methionine and L‐glutamine; L‐proline and betaine were the least stimulatory. The results of this study suggest that the Nile tilapia has high external gustatory sensitivity to some amino acids as a physiological adaptation to search effectively for their sources. The effect of the pH, ranging from 4.0 to 9.0, on the RSE of three neutral amino acids and artificial pond water (APW) was also studied. The RSE increased below pH 6.0 and was relatively unaffected from 7.0 to 9.0, indicating that acidified stimulants are highly stimulatory in this species. Nile tilapia did not discriminate the pH of APW as effectively as some of the species studied earlier.  相似文献

Fish biologists have shown little interest in near-infrared (NIR) sensitivity because water absorbs light in the red and near-infrared and because downward irradiance in clear ocean water is mostly blue light. In recent years, however, Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus was shown to be NIR sensitive by behavioral techniques. This study confirmed NIR sensitivity in the common carp Cyprinus carpio and Nile tilapia by using a more sensitive technique than a behavioral one. Cardiac conditioning experiments showed that both fishes are sensitive to 865 nm NIR. The conditioned response to 865 nm NIR was observed in Nile tilapia when the eyes were not covered and the pineal window was covered, but not when the same fish had its eyes covered and the pineal window exposed to the NIR. The eyes are thus, the NIR-sensitive organs in Nile tilapia. To identify the NIR photoreceptor, the retina was examined by histology. The retina exposed to 865 nm NIR showed incomplete dark adaptation with rods exposed from retinal epithelial pigment. Though the reaction to NIR seemed to be mediated mainly by the red cone, the involvement of the rod could not be ruled out.  相似文献

Two experiments (E1 and E2) to assess the performance of tilapia broodstock and tilapia sex‐reversed fry in overwintering were conducted at the Research Institute for Aquaculture No.1 (RIA‐1) in the cold seasons of 1995–96 and 1996–97. Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) broodstock of the Thai, GIFT, Egypt and Viet strains were overwintered in deep and shallow ponds, as well as in deep and shallow hapas suspended in a single deep pond for evaluation of the influence of overwintering systems on the survival and growth of fish. Large (> 1 g) and small (< 1 g) tilapia seed were overwintered in deep hapas‐in‐ponds for comparison of their performance. In 1995–96, the coldest pond water temperature was 10–11 °C, and survival of tilapia broodfish overwintered in deep and shallow hapas‐in‐ponds was 99.6–100%. This was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than fish stocked in deep and shallow ponds (74.4–90%). The survival rate of larger monosex tilapia fry was 54%, which was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of smaller fry (33.4%). In 1996–97, the lowest pond water temperature was 15.8 °C, and fry showed similarly high survival rates in all treatments (97–100%). There was no significant difference between fry in the two size classes. The results of this study clearly indicate that hapas‐in‐ponds are useful for reducing the risk and improving the survival of tilapia broodstock and fry in the cold season. Differences in the decline in ambient temperatures year on year mean that the need for special overwintering conditions varies. Hapas‐in‐ponds are a low‐cost overwintering method that can be one of the appropriate strategies for tilapia seed production under the variable, cool temperature regimes in northern Vietnam.  相似文献

Conjoined twins (polyembryonic fish) were observed in batches of blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus (Steindachner) and Nile tilapia O. niloticus (L.) embryos incubated at 28 °C. Heat shock (41.8 °C) treatment of fertilized eggs for 3–4 min applied between 4 min and 27 min after fertilization increased the twinning rate by three or four times over that of unshocked eggs. Two basic morphological variations – ventrally or laterally conjoined twins – were observed. Twins did not survive beyond 21 days after hatching. The proportion of twins in heat‐shocked egg batches of both species combined ranged from 0.32% to 0.40%.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary levels of distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) on growth, body composition, hematology, and resistance of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, to Streptococcus iniae challenge. Five isocaloric diets containing DDGS at levels of 0, 10, 20, and 40%, and 40% DDGS + lysine (Diets 1–5) as partial replacements of a combination of soybean meal (SBM) and corn meal (CM) on an equal protein basis were fed to juvenile Nile tilapia (9.41 ± 0.14 g) for 10 wk. Fish fed Diet 4 had the lowest weight gain (WG), feed efficiency ratio, protein efficiency ratio (PER), and whole‐body protein. Supplementation of lysine to the 40% DDGS diet (Diet 5) improved WG and PER. Hematological and immunological parameters were not affected by dietary treatment. There were no significant differences among the average number of days to first mortality after S. iniae challenge and cumulative mortality 14 d postchallenge among fish in various treatments. DDGS can be incorporated in tilapia diet at a level of 20% as a substitute for a combination of SBM and CM without affecting their growth performance, body composition, hematological parameters, immune response, and resistance to S. iniae infection.  相似文献
