The stimuli that elicit thirst were studied in four ponies. Nineteen hours of water deprivation produced an increase in plasma protein from 67 +/- 0.1 g/litre to 72 +/- 2 g/litre, a mean (+/- se) increase in plasma sodium from 139 +/- 3 to 145 +/- 2 mmol/litre and an increase in plasma osmolality from 297 +/- 1 to 306 +/- 2 mosmol/litre. Undeprived ponies drank 1.5 +/- 0.9 kg/30 mins; 19 h deprived ponies drank 10.2 +/- 2.5 kg/30 mins and corrected the deficits in plasma protein, plasma sodium and plasma osmolality as well as compensating for the water they would have drunk during the deprivation period. In order to determine if an increase in plasma osmolality would stimulate thirst, 250 ml of 15 per cent sodium chloride was infused intravenously. The ponies drank when osmolality increased 3 per cent and when plasma sodium rose from 136 +/- 3 mmol/litre to 143 +/- 3 mmol/litre. Ponies infused with 15 per cent sodium chloride drank 2.9 +/- 0.7 kg; those infused with 0.9 per cent sodium chloride drank 0.7 +/- 0.5 kg. In order to determine if a decrease in plasma volume would stimulate thirst, ponies were injected with 1 or 2 mg/kg bodyweight (bwt) frusemide. Plasma protein rose from 68 +/- 2 g/litre pre-injection to 75 +/- 2 g/litre 1 h after 1 mg/kg bwt frusemide and to 81 +/- 1 g/litre 1 h after 2 mg/kg bwt frusemide.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Serum haptoglobin was measured by immunoturbidity in Thoroughbreds stabled in three Newmarket yards for nine months. The mean serum haptoglobin value for horses housed in Stable 1 was 1.43 +/- 0.68 g/litre, similar to values in grazing adult ponies. The mean monthly haptoglobin values remained constant. For horses in Stable 2 there was an increase in serum haptoglobin values in June and July whereas, in Stable 3, the increases early in the training season were associated with an increase in serum viral titres. In equine serum, haptoglobin values estimated in g/litre by immunoturbidimetry were twice the haemoglobin binding capacity (HbBC). The correlation coefficient, between the methods, exceeded 0.96. Surgical interference caused a 2- to 3-fold increase in serum haptoglobin, with levels peaking between three and five days post surgery. The concomitant presence of haematomata following surgical interference (castration) resulted in the disappearance of haptoglobin from the circulation. There was no significant increase in serum haptoglobin levels following vaccination of Thoroughbreds against influenza and tetanus. However inhalation of influenza virus by vaccinated and non-vaccinated ponies resulted in a 2- to 3-fold increase in both groups of ponies, peaking seven to 10 days post infection. Serum haptoglobin proved to be a useful indicator of infection/inflammation and haemolytic disease in the horse and could be used to monitor the health status of stabled Thoroughbreds.  相似文献

Six ponies with recurrent obstructive lung disease were studied during two separate 60 min periods while receiving constant equal volume infusions of either aminophylline or sterile water. Dynamic lung compliance, pulmonary resistance, respiratory rate, tidal volume, blood gas tensions and heart rate were measured. Plasma samples were obtained for determination of theophylline concentrations before, and at 10 min intervals during, the infusion period. Excitability was assessed subjectively at these same time periods. The plasma theophylline concentrations in ponies were well predicted by a previously published model of theophylline pharmacokinetics in the horse. Sterile water had no effect on lung function. Aminophylline produced significant changes in lung function compared to baseline values, including a decrease in resistance at 30 min when the mean plasma theophylline concentration was 59 +/- 14 mumol/litre and an increase in compliance at 60 mins at a mean plasma theophylline concentration of 102 +/- 23 mumol/litre. Excitement was noted between 40 and 50 mins in all ponies (mean plasma theophylline concentration 74 +/- 20 and 84 +/- 24 mumol/litre, respectively). Heart rate increased at 50 mins. The therapeutic range for intravenous (iv) theophylline concentration in 'heavey' ponies therefore appears to be between 59 and 84 mumol/litre when aminophylline is administered iv. Below 59 mumol/litre there was no consistent bronchodilator activity and above 84 mumol/litre excitement and tachycardia limited the usefulness of the drug.  相似文献

The concentrations of haptoglobin, immunoglobin (Ig)G(T) and IgG were measured in the serum of four previously parasite-free pony yearlings following a single dose of 700 (Group H) or 200 (Group L) stage three Strongylus vulgaris larvae (L3) and following a reinfection with the same doses 34 weeks later. The results are compared with an uninfected control pony. The haptoglobin concentration increased during Weeks 1 to 6 and 14 to 17 after infection in the serum of the ponies receiving 200 L3, but in only one pony dosed with 700 L3 (during Weeks 1 to 16). The serum haptoglobin also increased during the first seven weeks after the second infection, in three of the four ponies following the second dose of larvae. The serum IgG(T) concentration started to increase from Week 6 or 9 in the ponies given 700 L3, reaching peaks of 44 and 32 g/litre respectively, eight to nine weeks later, compared with a peak of 16 g/litre 20 to 22 weeks after infection in ponies dosed with 200 L3. The IgG(T) concentration increased to a maximum of 25 g/litre in the serum of only one of the four ponies after the reinfection. The serum IgG concentration in all ponies increased nearly twofold during the first eight weeks after both the primary and secondary dose of larvae. It is concluded that the measurement of specific proteins is more reliable and quicker than the electrophoretic separation and quantitation of protein bands, in tracing changes in serum proteins following the artificial infection of ponies with S vulgaris larvae.  相似文献

Blood lactate concentrations were determined in 16 horses (three Thoroughbreds, seven Standardbreds and six polo ponies) before and 5 mins after they galloped over distances of 200, 300 and 400 m at maximal speed. The highest net lactate concentration (delta Lamax) of 14 to 15 mmol/litre was attained by the polo ponies and the highest speed by the Thoroughbreds. The maximal rate of lactate production (delta L?max) was about 35 mmol/litre X min for the polo ponies and 20 to 25 mmol/litre X min for the Standardbreds and the Thoroughbreds. Values for delta Lamax and delta L?max were similar to those measured in human athletes after exhaustive work. delta L?max increases with the speed (v) and can be described by the equation delta L? = a (v-v1), where a is a proportionality constant representing the amount of lactate needed to cover a unit distance and v1 the theoretical speed at which delta L? = 0 X v1 was highest for the Thoroughbreds and lowest for the polo ponies; this difference could be caused by the effect of training and/or to genetic differences among the different breeds of horses X v1 could be a useful index of the fitness of a horse following a training programme.  相似文献

After an oral dose of 10 g of L-carnitine the plasma concentrations of free and total carnitine increased in five yearling thoroughbred horses, reaching a peak two to four hours after administration, but in two horses there was no increase. In the five which responded, the mean (+/- sd) peak increase in total carnitine concentration was 15.1 +/- 6.9 mumol/litre from a predose mean of 18.8 +/- 3.4 mumol/litre, and the mean peak increase in free carnitine concentration was 13.5 +/- 3.1 mumol/litre from a pre-dose mean concentration of 12.5 +/- 2.2 mumol/litre. These changes were similar to those observed previously in a group of adult thoroughbred horses given 10 g of L-carnitine. There was no consistent pattern of change in the concentration of acetylcarnitine in the seven yearling horses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To establish maximum oxygen consumption VO2max) in ponies of different body weights, characterize the effects of training of short duration on VO2max, and compare these effects to those of similarly trained Thoroughbreds. ANIMALS: 5 small ponies, 4 mid-sized ponies, and 6 Thoroughbreds. PROCEDURE: All horses were trained for 4 weeks. Horses were trained every other day for 10 minutes on a 10% incline at a combination of speeds equated with 40, 60, 80, and 100% of VO2max. At the beginning and end of the training program, each horse performed a standard incremental exercise test in which VO2max was determined. Cardiac output (Q), stroke volume (SV), and arteriovenous oxygen content difference (C [a-v] O2) were measured in the 2 groups of ponies but not in the Thoroughbreds. RESULTS: Prior to training, mean VO2max for each group was 82.6 = 2.9, 97.4 +/- 13.2, and 130.6 +/- 10.4 ml/kg/min, respectively. Following training, mean VO2max increased to 92.3 +/- 6.0, 107.8 +/- 12.8, and 142.9 +/- 10.7 ml/kg/min. Improvement in VO2max was significant in all 3 groups. For the 2 groups of ponies, this improvement was mediated by an increase in Q; this variable was not measured in the Thoroughbreds. Body weight decreased significantly in the Thoroughbreds but not in the ponies. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ponies have a lower VO2max than Thoroughbreds, and larger ponies have a greater VO2max than smaller ponies. Although mass-specific VO2max changed similarly in all groups, response to training may have differed between Thoroughbreds and ponies, because there were different effects on body weight.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the minimum protein requirement in adult ponies. Literature data from nitrogen-balance trials in adult ponies were used. In addition, nitrogen balance was measured in three mature ponies that were fed a low- and a high-protein diet according to a cross-over design. On the low-protein ration, which provided 1.1 g digestible crude protein (DCP)/kg(0.75) day, plasma albumin and total protein concentrations were non-significantly decreased by about 6% and group-mean nitrogen balance was negative. Using data from the present experiment and from six other studies, the sum of endogenous faecal and urinary nitrogen losses was calculated to be 166 +/- 37 mg/kg(0.75) day (mean +/- SE, n = 13). Subsequently, a minimum protein requirement of 1.7 g DCP/kg(0.75) day was calculated. The value for minimum protein requirement has low precision, which should be taken into account when setting the protein allowance of adult ponies.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of prolonged administration of insulin, whilst maintaining normal glucose concentrations, on hoof lamellar integrity in vivo on healthy ponies with no known history of laminitis or insulin resistance. Nine clinically healthy, unrelated ponies were randomly allocated to either a treatment group (n =5; 5.9+/-1.7 years) or control group (n =4; 7.0+/-2.8 years). The treatment group received insulin via a euglycaemic hyperinsulinaemic clamp technique modified and prolonged for up to 72 h. Control ponies were infused with an equivalent volume of 0.9% saline. Ponies were euthanized at the Obel grade 2 stage of clinical laminitis and hoof lamellar tissues were harvested and examined for histopathological evidence of laminitis. Basal serum insulin and blood glucose concentrations were 15.7+/-1.8 microU/mL and 5.2+/-0.1 mmol/L, respectively (mean+/-SE) and were not significantly different between groups. Mean serum insulin concentration in treatment ponies was 1036+/-55 microU/mL vs. 14.6 microU/mL in controls. All ponies in the treatment group developed clinical and histological laminitis (Obel grade 2) in all four feet within 72 h (55.4+/-5.5h), whereas none of the control ponies developed laminitis. There was no clinical evidence of gastrointestinal involvement and the ponies showed no signs of systemic illness throughout the experiment. The data show that laminitis can be induced in healthy young ponies, with no prior history of laminitis, by maintaining prolonged hyperinsulinaemia with euglycaemia. This suggests a role for insulin in the pathogenesis of laminitis, independent of hyperglycaemia, or alterations in hind-gut fermentation. For the clinician, early detection and control of hyperinsulinaemia may facilitate management of endocrinopathic laminitis.  相似文献

Electrically induced osteogenesis exhibits a dose response curve and can induce bone formation in the absence of trauma and in nonunions. Electrically induced osteogenesis, using direct electric current (DC) in a third metacarpal diaphyseal osteotomy model, in conjunction with internal fixation and postoperative loading, was investigated. Twelve young adult ponies of mixed sex were divided into 2 treatment groups (A and B) of 3 stimulated and 3 controls each and evaluated, using a specifically designed procedure. Stimulated ponies in both groups were given 20 microA of DC via an implanted bone growth stimulator (BGS); group A ponies were stimulated for 60 days and group B ponies for 120 days. Biocompatibility of the BGS was excellent in all ponies. Radiographically, there was more advanced healing with better vascular development in the ponies stimulated for 60 days compared with controls, but no discernible difference was seen at 120 days. Nuclear medical bone imaging revealed a peak uptake at 4 weeks in stimulated groups and the uptake decreased after 8 weeks. Radiopharmaceutical uptake in stimulated ponies was consistently below control uptake throughout the study. Mean specific gravity (SG) of specimens prepared for testing materials properties for group A and B controls were 2.044 +/- 0.119 and 1.939 +/- 0.065, respectively. The SG for group A and group B stimulated were 1.992 +/- 0.049 and 1.876 +/- 0.031, respectively. The SG of specimens obtained from metacarpi of age-matched control ponies was 2.194 +/- 0.166. The ultimate bending strengths and the flexural moduli of elasticity in 60-day control ponies and stimulated ponies were 57 +/- 8.4, 59 +/- 23.9 MN/m2 and 89 +/- 3.5, 106 +/- 6.5 MN/m2 and in 120-day control ponies and stimulated ponies were 13 +/- 1.0, 13 +/- 3.2 GN/m2 and 13 +/- 2.89, 15 +/- 0.577 GN/m2, respectively. Sixty-day samples and 120-day samples had pending strengths (SU) of 25% and 50% that of unfractured cortex, respectively. These findings indicate that 20 microA of DC stimulation on a diaphyseal osteotomy model may not stimulate sufficient bone production to affect the mechanical properties of the bone. Therefore, based on our research, clinical use of BGS in fresh fracture management cannot be recommended.  相似文献

Seven healthy foals (five ponies and two horses) were maintained on grass pasture with their dams. All foals had normal faeces at the time of testing. An oral xylose absorption test was performed on each foal at one, two and three months of age. Following an 8 h fast, 0.5 g/kg D-xylose as a 10 per cent solution was given via a nasogastric tube. Control and 30 min interval plasma samples were collected for 3 h and the plasma was analysed for xylose using the phloroglucinol microassay technique. Maximum xylose concentration levels were reached between 30 and 60 mins for each of the foals. The mean (+/- sem) peak xylose concentration at one, two and three months of age was 3.14 +/- 0.29, 2.19 +/- 0.30 and 1.25 +/- 0.22 mmol/litre respectively, which were all significantly different from each other. Xylose absorption capacity decreased, therefore, with age, becoming similar to the adult horse by three months of age. The oral xylose absorption test can be used to evaluate small intestinal absorptive capacity in the foal provided that the results are compared with foals of the same age group.  相似文献

Antagonism of xylazine-pentobarbital anesthesia by yohimbine in ponies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Effects of yohimbine on xylazine-pentobarbital anesthesia were evaluated in ponies. Five minutes after the IV injection of xylazine (1.1 mg/kg of body weight), pentobarbital sodium (12.7 mg/kg, IV) and additional xylazine (2.2 mg/kg, IM) were given and produced anesthesia in 12 ponies for 64.0 +/- 16.4 minutes (mean +/- SD) as well as immobilization for 89.8 +/- 34.2 minutes. Eleven ponies were given yohimbine (0.1 mg/kg, IV) 50 minutes after pentobarbital dosing. In these 11 ponies, durations of anesthesia and immobilization were shorter, 52.0 +/- 1.4 and 65.5 +/- 14.8 minutes, respectively. The xylazine-pentobarbital combination caused bradycardia that was reversed by yohimbine injection. Xylazine-pentobarbital produced a small, but steady, decrease of mean arterial blood pressure, which was compounded by yohimbine administration and was evident for approximately 2 minutes. Within a minute after yohimbine injection, the ponies' respiratory rate decreased and the length of inspiration and expiration and thoracic breathing increased. This lasted approximately 2 to 3 minutes and was followed by an increase in respiratory rate. The anesthesia also produced a decrease in PaO2 that gradually returned to base line in 12 control ponies, but was more pronounced in 11 ponies given yohimbine. The PaCO2, although remaining moderately high in control ponies, returned to base line after yohimbine injection. An increased pHa was seen 60 minutes after induction of anesthesia and was especially noticeable after yohimbine administration. Decreases in the number of WBC, hemoglobin content, PCV, plasma protein and serum aspartate transaminase resulting from xylazine-pentobarbital were reversed by yohimbine. Conversely, serum glucose values and creatine kinase activities were increased by xylazine-pentobarbital.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether pasture, and specifically the addition of fructan carbohydrate to the diet, induces exaggerated changes in serum insulin concentration in laminitispredisposed (LP) ponies, compared with ponies with no history of the condition, and also to determine insulin responses to the dexamethasone suppression test. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 10 LP and 11 control adult nonobese mixed-breed ponies. PROCEDURES: Insulin-modified IV glucose tolerance tests were performed (5 ponies/group). In diet studies, ponies were kept on pasture and then changed to a hay diet (10 ponies/group). Second, ponies were maintained on a basal hay diet (4 weeks) before being fed a hay diet supplemented with inulin (3 g/kg/d [1.4 g/lb/d]). Serum insulin and plasma glucose concentrations were analyzed before and after dietary changes. Serum cortisol and insulin concentrations were also measured in a standard dexamethasone suppression test. RESULTS: The LP ponies were insulin resistant (median insulin sensitivity of 0.27 x 10(4) L min(-1) mU(-1) in LP ponies, compared with 0.64 x 10(4) L min(-1) mU(-1) in control ponies). Median insulin concentration in LP ponies was significantly greater than that in control ponies at pasture, decreased in response to feeding hay, and was markedly increased (5.5-fold) following the feeding of inulin with hay. The LP ponies had a greater increase in serum insulin concentration at 19 hours after dexamethasone administration (median, 222.9 mU/L), compared with control ponies (45.6 mU/L). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Nonobese ponies predisposed to develop laminitis had compensated insulin resistance, and this phenotype was revealed by feeding plant fructan carbohydrate or by dexamethasone administration.  相似文献

The effect of meal frequency on body fluid, glucose, triiodothyronine (T3), heart rate and behavior was measured in 10 ponies. A simple reversal design was used in which each pony received one meal/day (1X) for 2 wk and six meals/day (6X) for 2 wk. The total intake/day was held constant. Feeding was followed by a rise in plasma levels of glucose, T3, protein and osmolality. One large meal was followed by significantly greater changes in all of the variables than was a meal one-sixth the size. Plasma T3 rose from 41 +/- 5 (SE) ng/liter before feeding to 43 +/- 5 ng/liter following a small meal, but rose significantly higher, from 39 +/- 4 to 60 +/- 10 ng/liter, following a large meal. Glucose rose from 84 +/- 3 to 109 +/- 7 mg/dl following a small meal and rose significantly higher, from 83 +/- 3 to 154 +/- 11 mg/dl, after a large meal. Plasma protein rose from 6.55 +/- .14 to 6.62 +/- .16 g/dl following a small meal and from 6.45 +/- .14 to 6.99 +/- .11 g/dl following a large meal. Osmolality rose from 227 +/- 1 mosmol/liter before to 279 +/- 1 mosmol/liter following a small meal and significantly higher from 278 +/- 2 to 285 +/- 1 mosnol/liter following a large meal. Heart rate rose from 42 beats/min in the absence of feed to 50 beats/min when food was visible to the ponies and did not rise higher when eating began. There were no significant differences in the cardiac response to one large meal and that to a small meal.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Serum levels of type III procollagen peptide (P-III-P) were measured by radioimmunoassay in clinically normal adult ponies (n = 15) and horses (n = 10). The mean serum levels of P-III-P from the ponies, 10.4 +/- 2.9 (SD) ng/mL, and the horses, 12.2 +/- 2.6 (SD) ng/mL, were not significantly different. Segments of jejunum were made ischemic to induce fibrous peritoneal adhesions in two ponies, and serum P-III-P levels were measured on days 4, 5, 7, 14, and 21. An exploratory celiotomy on day 21 revealed that the ischemic injury had induced fibrosis of the mesentery and bowel, but no adhesions had formed. The fibrotic mesentery contained type III collagen. The highest mean serum level of P-III-P, 23.0 +/- 3.5 (SD) ng/mL on day 7, was more than 4 SD above the mean from the normal ponies. There was a significant difference in the serum P-III-P levels in the ponies on days 0 (7.1 +/- 1.6 ng/mL) and 7 (23.0 +/- 3.5 ng/mL). Serum levels of P-III-P may be useful to study fibrosis associated with intestinal ischemia.  相似文献

This paper attempts to evaluate the changes in the mechanical work of breathing induced by the increase of ventilation in ponies exercising on a treadmill. Airflow, tidal volume (VT) and oesophageal pressure were simultaneously recorded in eight ponies (four to six years old and weighing 258 +/- 11 kg) before, during and after standardised exercise. Respiratory frequency, VT and minute volume (Ve) for each phase of the experimental protocol were calculated from the collected data. The pressure-volume diagrams were traced and the work per cycle (Wrm) was estimated by measuring the area enclosed in the loop. The work per minute (Wrm) and the work per litre of ventilation (Wrm litre-1) were also calculated. From rest to fast trot Wrm litre-1, Wrm and Wrm had increased 8.1, 13.0 and 55.6 times, respectively. The relationships between Ve and Wrm litre-1 was linear and that between Ve and Wrm curvilinear. Results suggested that the mechanical cost of the work of breathing could be a limiting or at least a constraining factor of the increase of ventilation during strenuous exercise in ponies.  相似文献

Social facilitation of feeding and time budgets in stabled ponies   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Eight pairs of pony mares were observed. Members of a pair were housed in adjacent stalls and fed hay ad libitum. The behavior of both ponies was recorded simultaneously in the morning (1000 to 1200 h) and afternoon (1400 to 1600 h) for a total of 117 h. The time budget was: 70.1 +/- 8.6% eating; 17.8 +/- 7.4% standing (including stand rest, stand alert and stand nonalert); 5.2 +/- 7.0% pushing hay; 2.9 +/- 1.2% walking; 1.9 +/- 2.9% drinking; 1.3 +/- 1.1% self-grooming; .2 +/- .3% defecating; .06 +/- .1% chewing nonfood items; .06 +/- .03% urination; .06 +/- .1% licking salt; .07 +/- .1% pawing hay; .6 +/- .7% lying and .07 +/- .08% stretching the neck over the stall wall dividing the ponies. While eating, the ponies lifted their heads 25.4 +/- 11.0 times/h. In less than one-half of the occasions when urination or defecation was observed, the ponies walked away from the spot where they had been eating to eliminate. During one-half of the observations, visual contact between the ponies was prevented by a solid partition between the stalls. The ponies spent significantly more time standing nonalert when the partition prevented visual contact (12 +/- 7%) than when visual contact could take place (6 +/- 3%, P less than .05). When fresh hay was supplied in the mornings, the ponies spent similar amounts of time eating whether visual contact was allowed or not, but in the afternoon significantly more time was spent feeding when visual contact was allowed (73 +/- 4%) than when it was not (60 +/- 7%).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To acquire reference range values indicative of glucose metabolism by use of the hyperglycemic clamp technique in healthy horses and evaluate the usefulness of the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp technique in healthy horses and ponies. ANIMALS: Dutch Warmblood horses and 4 Shetland ponies. PROCEDURE: The hyperglycemic clamp technique was used for quantification of the sensitivity of beta cells to exogenous glucose infusion in horses. The euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp technique was used to determine the sensitivity and responsiveness of tissues to exogenous insulin in horses and ponies. RESULTS: During the hyperglycemic clamp technique, the mean amount of glucose metabolized (M) in horses was 0.011 +/- 0.0045 mmol/kg x min(-1) (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.0018 to 0.020 mmol/kg x min(-1); range, 0.000035 to 0.021 mmol/kg x min(-1)) and the mean M value-to-plasma insulin concentration (I) ratio (ie, mmol of glucose/kg x min(-1) per pmol of insulin/L x 100) was 0.017 +/- 0.016 (95% CI, -0.014 to 0.049; range, 0.000025 to 0.055). During the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp technique, the mean M value was 0.014 +/- 0.0055 mmol/kg x min(-1) (95% CI, 0.0026 to 0.025 mmol/kg x min(-1); range, 0.0042 to 0.023 mmol/kg x min(-1)) in horses and 0.0073 +/- 0.0020 mmol/kg x min(-1) (95% CI, 0.0034 to 0.011 mmol/kg x min(-1); range, 0.0049 to 0.011 mmol/kg x min(-1)) in ponies. The M value was significantly lower in ponies than in horses, whereas the M:I ratios were not significantly different between horses and ponies. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Glucose clamp techniques offer good methods to investigate glucose metabolism in horses and ponies. A higher degree of insulin resistance was found in ponies, compared with Dutch Warmblood horses.  相似文献

Xylazine (0.35 mg/kg) or lidocaine (0.35 mg/kg) was injected into the epidural space of six ponies to compare their effectiveness as epidural analgesics. Each pony received both treatments at 1 week intervals with the order of treatments randomized. Xylazine produced analgesia of significantly longer duration (247 +/- 58 minutes) than that produced by an equal dose of lidocaine (135 +/- 22 minutes). Mild transient ataxia of no clinical significance developed in all ponies with both treatments. Spinal cords were removed from two ponies and examined histologically. No discernible pathologic changes were noted.  相似文献
