Calcium has important physiological functions, and disorders of calcium homeostasis are frequent in horses. We have made important progress understanding equine calcium homeostasis; however, limited information on equine calcitonin (CT) is available, in part because of the lack of validated CT assays. To determine the CT response to high ionized calcium (Ca2+) concentrations in healthy horses, we induced hypercalcemia in 10 healthy horses using a calcium gluconate 23% solution (5 mg/kg; 120 mL/500 kg horse) infused over 4 min. Four horses were infused with 120 mL of 0.9% NaCl and used as controls. We validated a human-specific CT radioimmunoassay for use in horses. Serum Ca2+ concentrations increased from 6.2 ± 0.3 mg/dL to 9.9 ± 0.5 mg/dL (4 min; P < 0.01). Serum CT increased from 16.7 ± 8.0 pg/mL to 87.1 ± 55.8 pg/mL at 2 min, and 102.5 ± 51.1 pg/mL at 4 min (P < 0.01). Serum CT returned to baseline by 20 min, whereas serum Ca2+ returned to baseline by 40 min. Of interest, CT concentrations returned to baseline despite hypercalcemia, suggesting thyroid gland C-cell CT depletion. Resting CT values higher than 40 pg/mL were considered abnormally elevated. No significant changes in serum Ca2+ or CT concentrations were found in control horses. The coefficients of variation for the CT radioimmunoassay were lower than 11.9%. We conclude that the equine thyroid gland C-cell responds quickly to changes in extracellular Ca2+ concentrations by secreting large quantities of CT into the systemic circulation, indicating that CT is important in equine calcium homeostasis. The human CT radioimmunoassay can be used to measure changes in equine CT.  相似文献

Plasma concentrations of adiponectin and leptin were measured in 23 mature Standardbred mares (age: 10 ± 3 years) and 12 weanling fillies (10 Quarter Horse/Belgian crossbreds and two Quarter Horses; aged: 4 ± 3 months) to test the hypothesis that adipocytokines are proportional to adiposity in horses. Rump fat thickness was measured using B-mode ultrasound and percent body fat (% fat) calculated using a published formula for the estimation of fatness in horses. Plasma adiponectin and leptin were determined using radioimmunoassay. In the absence of purified equine adiponectin or leptin, results were expressed as human equivalents (HE) of immunoreactive (ir) adipocytokines.Plasma ir-leptin HE concentration was positively correlated (r = 0.543; P < 0.001) with percent body fat and (r = 0.556; P < 0.001) to fat mass in all horses. The plasma ir-leptin HE concentration was lower (P = 0.03) in weanlings (1.90 ± 0.34 ng/mL HE) than in mature mares (3.47 ± 0.50 ng/mL HE). The ratio of ir-adiponectin HE to ir-leptin HE was negatively correlated (r = −0.621; P < 0.001) to percent fat and (r = −631; P < 0.001) to fat mass in all horses. The ratio of ir-adiponectin HE to ir-leptin HE was higher (P < 0.001) in weanlings (3.04 ± 0.51) than mature mares (1.03 ± 0.13). These data suggest that leptin is proportional while adiponectin is inversely proportional to adiposity in horses.  相似文献

There are few physiologic studies that substantiate thepopular belief that mules are superior to horses as working animals. The purpose of this study was to compare selected cardiac dimensions and right-sided cardiac pressures of mules and horses. Using 2-D real time and M-mode echocardiography and transjugular cardiac catheterization resting cardiac dimensions and right-sided pressures were recorded from 10 adult mules and 10 adult horses. The mules and horses were similar in size and physical condition, and both groups had served equally as pack animals. The end diastolic left ventricular lumen diameter, interventricular septal thickness, left ventricular free wall thickness, and aortic root diameter measured (mean ± SD) 9.51 ±0.92 cm, 2.63±0.34 cm, 2.28±0.31 cm, 7.9±0.57 cm, respectively, in mules, and 9.83±0.87 cm, 2.83±0.29 cm, 2.39±0.33 cm, 7.9±0.36 cm, respectively, in horses. The end systolic left ventricular lumen diameter measured 5.79 cm in mules and 5.94±0.99 cm in horses, yielding left ventricular luminal shortening fractions of 39.2±7.15% in mules and 39.7±6.91% in horses. Right atrial mean pressure was 5.3±2.3 mm of Hg in mules and 5.8±1.2 mm Hg in horses. Right ventricular peak systolic pressure was 47.9±4.9 mm Hg in mules and 47.7±3.5 mm Hg in horses. Pulmonary artery mean pressure was 27.3±3.2 mm Hg in mules and 28.1±3.6 mm Hg in horses. No significant differences were detected between mules and horses for the resting cardiac dimensions examined or right-sided pressures measured.  相似文献

Colostrum plays an important role in neonatal growth and development. However, little is known about the digestion of macronutrients in colostrum of any species. This study was conducted with the neonatal piglet model to determine the digestibility of proteins in porcine colostrum. Twelve, 1-d-old, male piglets were selected from 3 litters (4 pigs/litter) and housed individually in metabolism crates with heating lamps to maintain a temperature of 35 °C. Colostrum (13 L) was collected from 400 sows (30 to 40 mL/sow) within 12 h postpartum after injection of oxytocin. All piglets were fed colostrum containing 0.25% (DM basis) chromium oxide as an external marker based on the following feeding program: 6 meals/d for an entire 3-d period; with 40 mL/meal for d 1 (240 mL/d), 55 mL/meal for d 2 (330 mL/d), and 70 mL/meal for d 3 (420 mL/d). Colostrum was hand-fed using baby milk bottles. Entire fecal samples with the chromium green color were collected each day after colostrum feeding. Fecal collection was terminated before the fading of the green color. Fecal samples were weighed (10.3 ± 1.0 g/pig), stored in − 20 °C, freeze-dried, and thoroughly ground for chemical analysis. Blood samples were collected at 0900 h of d 3 to obtain plasma samples for amino acid and immunoglobulin (Ig) G analysis. Digestibilities of crude protein and DM in colostrum, defined as the percentage of ingested colostral crude proteins and DM that disappeared in the gut, averaged 96.9 ± 0.4% and 98.3 ± 0.2%, respectively. Digestibility of total amino acids (protein-bound plus free amino acids) in the colostrum was 98.3 ± 0.1%, with the values being 98.5 ± 0.3, 98.2 ± 0.4, and 98.3 ± 0.3%, respectively, for Lys, Thr, and Arg. Plasma and colostral IgG content were 3.4 ± 0.3 and 3.8 ± 0.7 g/L, respectively. In conclusion, protein-bound and free amino acids in porcine colostrum were highly digestible and available to neonatal pigs.  相似文献

Horse racing is a contest between horses, usually held for the purpose of betting. Thoroughbred horse racing is the most diffused form of horse racing throughout the world. Thoroughbred is one of the most versatile of horse breeds and has influenced the development of many other breeds. Thoroughbred horses served as a foundation stock for the development of the light horse breeds. The two types of horse racing are flat racing and jumping races/steeplechases. The measures of racing performance are broadly classified into three categories. They are time and its several variations, handicap or similar performance ratings and earnings. One common measure of the performance of racehorses evaluated genetically is racing time or final time. The heritability estimates differed according to method of estimation, age, sex, track and distance. Time measure generally had a heritability in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 with the higher values for shorter races. For handicap and earning measures the heritabilities reported were generally higher in the range of 0.3 to 0.4; hence these may be considered in genetic evaluation of racing performance of Thoroughbred horses. The average generation interval of Thoroughbred horses was 11.2 ± 4.5 and 9.7 ± 3.8 years for males and females respectively, which limits the genetic progress in racing horses. However, the major advantage is that the racing performance may be evaluated in both males and females and repeated observations can be obtained on the same animal in relatively short periods. These factors coupled with the reasonable heritability of some measures of racing performance, suggest that mass selection based on performance tests would be the selection procedure of choice to improve the racing performance of Thoroughbred horses. In general, the inbreeding at the rate that is usually practised in Thoroughbred population does not enable much gene fixing. However, practice of close inbreeding may be avoided, even though it still fascinates breeders at subconscious level.  相似文献

Variance components, heritability (direct additive and maternal) and correlations (additive genetic, phenotypic, maternal genetic and environmental) of body weight (BW) and body size including length (BL), height (BH) and chest girth (BCG) at birth in Boer goats were estimated on the basis of 5096 records obtained from a Boer Goat Breeding Station in Yidu, China, during 2001–2005. The parameters were estimated using a DFREML procedure by excluding or including maternal genetic or permanent maternal environmental effects, four different analysis models were fitted in order to determine the optimum model for each trait. The environmental factors such as year, season, sex and litter size (LS, number of kids) were investigated as the fixed effects. The results showed that the maternal effects were important determinants of estimated the genetic parameters for birth traits. Year and season had significant effect on birth traits. Single births and male kids had the heaviest live weight and the largest body size at birth. The mean values and standard deviation (SD) of BW, BL, BH and BCG were 3.87 ± 0.85 kg, 31.67 ± 2.87 cm, 32.92 ± 2.80 cm, 33.46 ± 3.21 cm. The mean values and standard error (SE) of direct additive heritability estimates for BW, BL, BH and BCG calculated with the optimum model were 0.19 ± 0.08, 0.14 ± 0.07, 0.24 ± 0.09 and 0.25 ± 0.10, respectively. For all the birth traits, estimates of the correlations between direct additive and maternal genetic (ram) were negative. The estimates of additive genetic and phenotypic correlations among the birth traits were high and positive, and implied no genetic antagonisms among these traits analyzed. The estimates of maternal genetic correlations also were high and positive. Medium and positive environmental correlations indicated the important effects of environmental factors on early growth traits.  相似文献

Serum potassium concentrations in horses euthanatized by intravenous injection of potassium chloride (KC1) were determined and compared to potassium concentrations in control horses euthanatized by injection of sodium pentobarbital. Horses euthanatized with 50 (n=7) or 100 (n=5) mg KCl/kg body weight had significantly higher (P<0.05) serum potassium concentrations compared to control horses, (11.3±0.8 meq/1 or 16.0±4.7 meq/1 versus 7.6±2.2 meq/1, respectively) at 2 hours after death. Both test groups sustained elevated serum potassium concentrations from 15 to 120 minutes postmortem. Whole blood potassium and serum chloride concentrations were of little diagnostic value.  相似文献

Introduction

In equine sports medicine, it is important to evaluate the cardiovascular condition of the athlete. More recently, echocardiography has been used for this purpose.Echocardiography is an invaluable diagnostic aid, since it is non-invasive and easy to perform,[1, 2 and 3] while offering a dynamic and functional evaluation of the heart. [2, 3, 4 and 5].Initially, studies on the M-mode were made, including measurements of normal cardiac dimensions in horses[6 and 7] and foals and for the diagnosis of several cardiac diseases. [1] With the introduction of the B-mode technique in the mid-1980s and its validation, a more detailed anatomic evaluation was possible, [2, 8 and 9] thus allowing the observation of cardiac abnormalities. [10]Though echocardiographic examination could be used to predict the athletic condition of individuals,[11] this is possible only if normal echocardiographic reference values are established. As different breeds have different biotypes and develop different aptitudes, it is necessary to provide enough information for each type of work or breed. Research includes data for the Thoroughbred racehorse [3, 12 and 13] and Standardbred trotter, [14 and 15] which perform essentially anaerobic work. The endurance race is a modality that is growing significantly in Brazil, both in number of participants and in quality and training of the animals. The endurance horse demands a physical conditioning that differs from that required for racehorses, especially owing to the development of aerobic work. In addition, the animals are mainly Arabian or Arabian crossbred, which have a particular biotype. Because of these facts, and the lack of data about the echocardiographic behavior of endurance horses, this study aimed to determine the dimensions and indexes of cardiac function for horses with endurance training using B-mode and guided M-mode echocardiography.

Materials and methods

Thirty-five clinically normal endurance Arabian and Arabian crossbred male and female horses between 5 and 18 years old, with an average weight of 415.51 ± 36.76 kg, were included in the study. All animals had at least 1 year of training and experience in competitions and were kept under similar hygienic, sanitary, and nutritional management. Training consisted of trail rides, alternating walking, trotting, and galloping, from 20 to 40 km per day, 3 to 4 times per week. The echocardiographic examination was performed with a Sonosite model 180 Plus v. 1.9 echocardiograph, using a 2-4–MHz electronic microconvex transducer with a maximal depth of 24 cm.The animals were prepared as previously reported,[4, 16 and 17] the hair being coated with large amounts of acoustic coupling gel. During the examination, the animals were at rest, calm, and physically restrained only by the halter, in a quiet and dark room. The following echocardiographic measurements, in B-mode as well as guided M-mode, were performed: the left atrium internal diameter in systole (LAs), only in B-mode, in the long axis view, dorsal to the annulus[15]; the right ventricle internal diameter, in diastole (RVIDd) and in systole (RVIDs); the interventricular septum thickness, in diastole (IVSd) and in systole (IVSs); the left ventricle internal diameter, in diastole (LVIDd) and in systole (LVIDs); and the left ventricle free wall thickness, in diastole (LVFWd) and in systole (LVFWs), from the left ventricle short axis view at the chordal level; and the aortic root internal diameter (Aod), from the aortic valve short axis view. The B-mode measurements were taken according to Patteson et al, [12] and the M-mode measurements were based on Long et al. [18]Images were obtained from the right hemithorax. The position used for the transducer to obtain the standardized images for B-mode and guided M-mode were determined and used as described in Reef.[4 and 17]The echocardiographic examination began using the B-mode echocardiography, with the establishment of the tomographic planes, evaluating morphology of the cardiac structures and their movement in a global manner. The first image obtained was the right parasternal long axis view, with the observation of the ventricle inlets, atrioventricular valves, and both atria. With the transducer positioned to optimize visualization of the left atrium, usually with a minimal dorsal angulation, the LAs measurement was made, immediately before the opening of the mitral valve (Fig 1).  相似文献

Two populations of feral horses and one population of domestic horses located in portions of eastern California and western Nevada (Inyo National Forest) were examined for the occurrence of endoparasite infection and the protozoans, Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis. The two groups of feral horses consisted of 24 sedentary horses and 29 nomadic horses; there were a total of 11 domestic horses. The sedentary and nomadic horses were tracked and observed for one to three days, respectively. Fresh fecal samples were collected from the respective groups and examined for parasite eggs using the Cornell-Wisconsin Centrifugal Flotation Technique. A total of 58 fecal samples were collected from the three groups (sedentary, n=16; nomadic, n=31; domestic, n=11). Data (eggs·g−1) were initially analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric statistical method. Mean separation was accomplished by using the Mann-Whitney U-test following an observed significant effect of group (p<0.0001) with the Kruskal-Wallis test. The median numbers of eggs·g−1 for the sedentary, nomadic and domestic groups were 803.0, 69.0 and 321.0, respectively. The interquartile range along with the 25th and 75th percentile for the respective groups were 776.0 (332.0–1108.0), 136.5 (32.0–168.5) and 486.0 (198.0–684.0). The eggs·g−1 for the nomadic group were less than the sedentary horses (p<0.0001) and less than the domestic horses (p<0.02); however, there were no observed differences between the sedentary and domestic groups (p=0.13). The lower number of eggs·g−1 observed for the nomadic group is most likely due to the reduced time spent on the collection site relative to their movement pattern. Separate aliquots of the fecal samples were also analyzed for Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis. All fecal samples were negative for these two organisms.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of doxycycline were investigated in sheep after oral (PO) and intravenous (IV) administration. The IV data were best described using a 2- (n = 5) or 3- (n = 6) compartmental open model. Mean pharmacokinetic parameters obtained using a 2-compartmental model included a volume of distribution at steady-state (Vss) of 1.759 ± 0.3149 L/kg, a total clearance (Cl) of 3.045 ± 0.5264 mL/kg/min and an elimination half-life (t1/2β) of 7.027 ± 1.128 h. Comparative values obtained from the 3-compartmental mean values were: Vss of 1.801 ± 0.3429 L/kg, a Cl of 2.634 ± 0.6376 mL/kg/min and a t1/2β of 12.11 ± 2.060 h. Mean residence time (MRT0−∞) was 11.18 ± 3.152 h. After PO administration, the data were best described by a 2-compartment open model. The pharmacokinetic parameter mean values were: maximum plasma concentration (Cmax), 2.130 ± 0.950 μg/mL; time to reach Cmax (tmax), 3.595 ± 3.348 h, and absorption half-life (t1/2k01), 36.28 ± 14.57 h. Non-compartmental parameter values were: Cmax, 2.182 ± 0.9117 μg/mL; tmax, 3.432 ± 3.307 h; F, 35.77 ± 10.20%, and mean absorption time (MAT0–∞), 25.55 ± 15.27 h. These results suggest that PO administration of doxycycline could be useful as an antimicrobial drug in sheep.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the plasma disposition and faecal excretion of netobimin (NTB) and its respective metabolites as well as the efficacy against strongyles in horses following oral administration. Netobimin (10 mg/kg) was administered orally to 8 horses. Blood and faecal samples were collected from 1 to 120 h post-treatment and analysed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Using a chiral phase-based HPLC, plasma disposition of ABZSO enantiomers produced was also determined. Faecal strongyle egg counts (EPG) were performed by a modified McMaster’s technique before and after the treatment. Neither NTB nor ABZ were present and only albendazole sulphoxide (ABZSO) and sulphone metabolites (ABZSO2) were detected in the plasma samples. Maximum plasma concentration of ABZSO (0.53 ± 0.14 μg/ml) and ABZSO2 (0.36 ± 0.09 μg/ml) were observed at (tmax) 10.50 and 19.50 h, respectively following administration of NTB. The area under the curve (AUC) of the two metabolites was similar to each other. Netobimin was not detected, and ABZ was predominant in faecal samples. The maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) of (−)ABZSO was significantly higher than (+)ABZSO, but the area under the curves (AUCs) of the enantiomer were not significantly different each other in plasma samples. The enantiomers of ABZSO were close to racemate in the faecal samples analyzed. Netobimin reduced the EPG by 100%, 100%, 77%, 80% and 75% 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks post-treatment, respectively. The specific behaviour of the two enantiomers probably reflects different enantioselectivity of the enzymatic systems of the liver which are responsible for sulphoxidation and sulphonation of ABZ. Considering the pharmacokinetic and efficacy parameters NTB could be used as an anthelmintic in horses.  相似文献

The dose-related antinociceptive effects of intravenous (IV) buprenorphine were evaluated in cats. Thermal (TT) and mechanical threshold (MT) devices were used for nociceptive stimulation. After baseline threshold recordings, buprenorphine was administered IV (0.01, 0.02 or 0.04 mg/kg; B1, B2 and B4, respectively) in a randomised, blinded and cross-over study. Data were analysed by ANOVA (P < 0.05) using 95% confidence intervals (CI). TT increased 15, 30, 45 min and 1 (5.2 ± 2.7 °C), 2, 3 and 4 h after B1; 15, 30, 45 min and 1 (5.1 ± 3.9 °C) and 2 h after B2, and 15, 30, 45 min and 1 (5.4 ± 3.3 °C), 2, 3, 6 and 8 h after B4. MT increased 15 and 45 min after B2 (260 ± 171 mmHg), and 30 (209 ± 116 mmHg) and 45 min and 1 and 2 h after B4. At 45 min, MT values were significantly higher after B2 compared to B1 (P < 0.05). With MT, B2 and B4 produced more antinociception and longer duration of action than B1, respectively. No dose response to thermal stimulation was detected.  相似文献

This study was performed to compare the onset and duration of analgesia produced by either a lidocaine−MgSO4 or lidocaine−distilled water combination administration in the caudal epidural space of horse. Seven healthy adult horses, aged 11.7 ± 1.4 years (mean ± SD), body weight (kg) 567 ± 32.5 (mean ± SD), were selected for this study. Caudal epidural anesthesia was produced in all horses by administering 2% lidocaine (0.22 mg/kg) diluted in 1 mL distilled water and repeated with 2% lidocaine (0.22 mg/kg) diluted in 1 mL 10% MgSO4 2 weeks later. Time to onset (minutes), duration (minutes), and cranial spread of epidural analgesia were recorded. Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and body temperature (°C) were recorded. Measurements were taken at 0 (as a baseline value before epidural administrations) and at 5, 10, 15, 30, 60, and 75 minutes after the epidural administrations of each treatment. Statistical analyses included paired Student t test and analysis of variance (computer program SPSS, Analytical Software, version 15.00). Statistical significance was set at P < .05. Onset of analgesia was significantly different (P < .001) between lidocaine-distilled water (2.38 ± 0.47 minutes) and lidocaine−MgSO4 (4.62 ± 0.54 minutes). Duration of analgesia after lidocaine−MgSO4 (186.0 ± 7.0 minutes) was longer than lidocaine-distilled water (54.5 ± 7.3 minutes). No significant differences were recorded for HR, RR, and body temperature in comparison with baseline values for each group. Using the lidocaine−MgSO4 combination for obstetric and surgical procedures could commence relatively soon after epidural injection and could be completed without readministration of anesthetic agent.  相似文献

Ten Standardbred horses were fed a mixed diet (60% hay + 40% concentrate) at a maintenance and 1.2 times maintenance over 2 three-month-periods in winter and summer feeding trials. Energy expenditure was measured also by indirect calorimetry in 4 of these horses. The DE and ME requirements for maintenance were calculated for zero energy gain in both cases. Energy requirements measured by feeding trial and by indirect calorimetry were consistent: 129 ± 10 and 132 ± 10 kcal ME/W0.75.Ts respectively. Individnal variability of requirements was 8% in both methods. ME requirements were 9% higher in summer than in winter and difference between young and adult horses ranged from −3% to +11%.  相似文献

The purpose of this, trial was to determine the effect of hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP) on exercise tolerance in Quarter Horses. Five HYPP affected and five nonaffected horses were matched for age, size, gender and reproductive status. HYPP status was diagnosed by DNA analysis and potassium chloride challenge testing. Plasma lactate concentration and heart rate were used as indicators of work intensity. Serum potassium concentrations were also monitored. Two exercise experiments were conducted, the first being forty-five minutes of slow, aerobic exercise (hacking) and the other being moderate, partially anaerobic exercise (galloping). Post-exercise the horses were cooled out by randomly assigning them to either forty minutes, of standing still or forty minutes of walking. Heart rates of HYPP affected and unaffected horses were not significantly different during exercise or recovery. Plasma lactate concentrations changed slightly following slow exercise and were significantly higher for HYPP affected horses (P=0.01).At the end of exercise, values were 1.4±0.2 mmol/L and 1.0±0.1 mmol/L for HYPP affected and unaffected horses, respectively. Following moderate exercise, plasma lactate concentrations were much greater, and the difference (P<0.001) between affected and unaffected horses was more marked: immediately following exercise concentrations were 10.6±1.8 and 6.2±1.0 mmol/L in affected and unaffected horses, respectively. The higher post-exercise plasma lactate concentrations in affected horses indicates increased anaerobic muscle metabolism. Serum potassium concentrations rose following exercise and significantly higher values were seen in horses that were walked rather than stood still post-exercise.Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP) is a dominant autosomal genetic defect occurring in American Quarter Horses and related breeds. 1–5 The condition is widely geographically distributed and has been estimated to affect 0.4% of all Quarter Horses.6 Signs include sporadic attacks of muscle fasciculation, muscle spasm, sweating and weakness. Oral administration of potassium chloride produces a more severe hyperkalemia in HYPP affected horses and induces clinical attacks.1 Electromyography reveals widespread continuous, spontaneous, muscle contraction.2 Some people believe that HYPP affected horses are suitable for riding7; others have expressed doubts about the safety of this practice and the exercise tolerance of affected horses. HYPP affected horses have an unstable muscle membrane potential causing random muscle fiber contractions,2,8 which could antagonize purposeful movement. This, in combination with increases in extracellular potassium concentration occurring during exercise,9–11 may cause affected horses to stumble or collapse while being ridden, posing a danger to both horse and rider. In HYPP affected people, potassium concentration rises approximately one to two hours after exercise during which time HYPP attacks can occur.9,10 For these reasons, the exercise tolerance of HYPP affected horses and the effects of exercise on spontaneous HYPP attacks deserves investigation. We standardized the exercise test and chose heart rate and plasma lactate concentrations as indicatoors, of exercise tolerance and energy metabolism.12 Heart rate is the major determinant of oxygen delivery to muscle and the rate rises with exercise intensity until it reaches a plateau at high velocities.13,14 Several lines of investigation indicate that plasma lactate concentrations reflect muscle work. Lactate release from resting muscle is minimal but large amounts are released during strenuous exercise.15–17 Lactate release increases with increasing muscle work.16,18 During exercise, muscle oxygen consumption increases until eventually a plateau is reached after which no further increase in oxygen consumption in response to increased work loads is possible.18 At this point the mitochondrial electron chain transport system is operating at its maximal possible rate, energy production can only be supplemented by the use of inefficient anerobic glycolytic metabolism and the muscle starts to release lactate. If the concentrations of plasma lactate are high, the muscles are depending on anaerobic metabolism and are working closer to exhaustion16,18–21The objectives of this experiment were twofold. One was to determine if HYPP adversely affects exercise performance. The second was to study the effects of cooling out, by either standing still or walking, on serum potassium and plasma lactate concentrations.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of density and provision of water on aggressive behavior, stress, and weight loss in slaughter horses during transport. A 16.2-m, single deck semi-trailer was divided into three compartments to create high, medium, and low density (397 ± 6.5 kg/m2, 348 ± 5.2 kg/m2, and 221 ± 7.6 kg/m2 per compartment) groups of unrestrained horses. Six shipments containing 23 to 30 horses per shipment were transported in June and July of 2004 for 18 to 20 hours. While the truck was stopped for 1 hour after 8 hours of transport and then again just before unloading, horses in each of two compartments received water for 1 hour from six water bowls (three bowls mounted on each side of a compartment). The third, non-watered compartment served as a control. Aggressive behavior of the horses was recorded using 12 video cameras installed in the trailer. All occurrences of aggressive behavior were counted from 15-minute segments of video during 2-hour intervals for each horse that was visible in each density group. Neither density nor water significantly affected (P > 0.21) aggressive behavior, cortisol, plasma chemistry profile, dehydration, or weight loss. Aggression did not differ (P = 0.49) between the first and second halves of the shipments, indicating that fatigue had not advanced to the stage where aggression was suppressed. Individual horses, rather than density were the major cause of aggressive behavior. However, two horses went down in the high density treatment, indicating that factors in high density could lead to increased morbidity or death.  相似文献

In this study a total of 6499 records were obtained for fibre diameter (FD) and coefficient of variation of FD (CV), 3283 records for greasy fleece weight (GFW), staple length (SL) and shearing interval (SI) and 1802 records of textile value index (TV) obtained from an experimental herd of alpacas exploited in the Peruvian Altiplano. The estimated heritabilities were: 0.412 ± 0.015 (FD), 0.321 ± 0.013 (CV), 0.098 ± 0.016 (GFW), 0.070 ± 0.011 (SL), 0.061 ± 0.012 (SI) and 0.163 ± 0.017 (TV). No significant genetic correlation was found for the pairs FD-CV and CV-GFW whilst the pairs FD-GFW, FD-SI and FD-TV had significant genetic correlations of, respectively, 0.405 ± 0.081, − 0.395 ± 0.078 and − 0.746 ± 0.049. No significant correlations were found for SL except for the pair SL-SI (0.397 ± 0.099). The TV index also showed significant genetic correlations with CV of 0.125 ± 0.061 and with GFW of 0.490 ± 0.070. All estimates of permanent environmental effects (c2) associated with the six analysed traits were statistically significant ranging from 0.008 for SI to 0.259 for CV. Total repeatability for the analysed traits was low for SI (0.069) and SL (0.090), moderate for TV (0.299) and GFW (0.316) and high for FD (0.578) and CV (0.579). The permanent environmental effect associated with CV is significantly correlated with those of the other traits except for FD. The permanent environmental effects associated with GFW and SL seemed to be basically the same (estimated correlation of 0.916 ± 0.062). The permanent environmental effect for TV is highly correlated with those associated with GFW (0.498 ± 0.058) and SL (0.750 ± 0.137). Expected selection response for TV was higher when FD was considered as selection goal instead of TV itself. It would, therefore, be more efficient to use FD rather than empirical indices as selection criterion to increase textile value in Peruvian alpacas. The reported genetic parameters and correlation matrices can be useful to implement multitrait breeding value estimations for alpaca selection.  相似文献

Limb contact variables of the gaits of superior dressage horses were determined for competitors at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympic Games in the finals of the Individual Dressage competition. Two 16-mm motion picture cameras were aimed perpendicular to the plane of motion along the HXF and KXM diagonals of the standard dressage arena, and filmed at 100 fps. Nineteen of the horses selected as finalists for individual dressage medals were filmed during the Grand Prix Special test executing one-stride canter lead changes, two-stride canter lead changes and the left lead extended canter. Velocities, stride lengths and stride durations were 7.03±.07 m/s, 4.15±.05 m and .592±.004 s for the extended canter. Across all stride frequencies, score was optimized with extended canter strides of the greatest length, with no upper limit detected to optimal stride length. Canter strides with lead changes had lower velocities, shorter strides and longer durations than strides without a lead change, with velocities, stride lengths and stride durations, respectively, of 3.36±.05 m/s, 2.08±.04 m and .617±.003 s for one-stride canter lead change strides; 3.65±.07 m/s, 2.21±.04 m and .605±.003 s for pre-change canter two-stride lead change strides; and 3.95±.07 m/s, 2.44±.04 m and .621±.004 s for post-change canter two-stride lead change strides. This study provided the first objective documentation of the canter limb contact patterns of world-class dressage horses.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of topical 1% tetracaine hydrochloride on the intraocular pressure (IOP) in ophthalmologically normal horses. Thirty eyes of 15 clinically normal horses were used for this study. The animals were randomly assigned to two groups (treatment and control). Prior to the instillation of 1% tetracaine or placebo, the baseline IOPs (T0) of each animal were recorded in both groups. Then one drop of tetracaine was instilled randomly into one eye of each horse in the treatment group (8 horses). In the control group (7 horses), one drop of artificial tear was instilled in one randomly selected eye. The measurements were repeated at 2 minutes (T2), 5 minutes (T5), 15 minutes (T15), and 30 minutes (T30) post instillation via a rebound tonometer. There was no significant difference in the treatment group (P = .3). The peak IOP measured at T2 returned to the baseline value at T30. No significant difference was found in the mean IOP values between the treatment and the control groups, or between the males and females on any of the occasions (P > .05). The Results of this study revealed a nonsignificant increase of the IOP 2 minutes post instillation of 1% tetracaine in horses.  相似文献

A total of 4007 lactation records from 1520 Saanen goats kidding from 1999 to 2006 and obtained from 10 herds in Guanajuato, Mexico, were analyzed to estimate the heritabilities, repeatabilities, as well as genetic, environmental and phenotypic correlations for milk yield (MILK), fat yield (FAT), protein yield (PROT), fat content (%FAT), protein content (%PROT) and age at fist kidding (AFK). A five-trait repeatability model was used to estimate (co)variances for milk traits, and a four-trait animal model for first lactation records was used to estimate (co)variances involving AFK. For MILK, FAT, PROT, %FAT, %PROT and AFK, heritability estimates were 0.17 ± 0.04, 0.19 ± 0.05, 0.17 ± 0.04, 0.32 ± 0.06, 0.38 ± 0.07 and 0.31 ± 0.09, respectively. Repeatabilities for MILK, FAT, PROT, %FAT and %PROT were 0.43 ± 0.02, 0.42 ± 0.02, 0.42 ±0.02, 0.64 ± 0.02, and 0.63 ± 0.02, respectively. The genetic correlations between MILK and FAT, and between MILK and PROT, were high and positive (0.72 ± 0.08 and 0.87 ± 0.04, respectively). Genetic correlations between MILK and %FAT, between MILK and %PROT and between MILK and AFK, were − 0.24 ± 0.16, − 0.30 ± 0.15 and − 0.18 ± 0.23, respectively. Genetic correlations between AFK and FAT and between AFK and PROT were − 0.09 ± 0.24 and − 0.17 ± 0.25, respectively; and genetic correlations between AFK and %FAT and between AFK and %PROT were 0.29 ± 0.35 and 0.14 ± 0.27, respectively. Selection for milk traits is possible using a repeatability animal model. Selection for milk production traits would probably not increase AFK, but more precise estimates of the genetic correlations are required. Selection to lower AFK is possible. These (co)variance estimates would make it possible to predict the selection responses from different economic indices in order to maximize the economic responses for the local markets.  相似文献
